TASK 6

Research into the rock genre
HISTORY
Rock music originated from ‘rock and roll’ in the 1950’s and is largely associated with the
electric guitar usually as part of a group with a bass guitar and drums accompanying it.
Throughout the years, rock has seen a large transformation and can now be split into many
different categories which include: Garage, Pop, Blues, Folk, Progressive/Art;
Jazz, Glam, Metal (soft and hard);Christian, Punk, Post-Punk and Heartland. This was up to
the early 1980’s, at this point rock shifted into the alternative rock category and then into
grunge in the 1990’s when it was considered main stream. In recent years, rock has been
divided into four main sections: Pop Punk; Indie Rock; Heavy Metal and Alternative Metal.
Rock music in the past has been seen as quite controversial with lyrics often mentioning
drugs, alcohol, suicide etc.
People often associate rock just as heavy metal and ‘screamo’ and often fail to see the
softer side of the rock genre. There are also many stereotypes associated with rock such
as ‘Goth and Emo’ which tend to involve black clothing and can be interpreted as
intimidating. Punk rock also carries it’s own stereotypes with large, bright hair with many
piercings.
