Task 5- Deciding Which Genre and Style
Indie Pop/Rock
My level of Knowledge and Expertise:
 Indie is short for independent music which is referring to the record label which is
independent from corporate funding.
 They are mainly dominated by male artists.
 It is not stereotypically known for being mainstream but over time it has become
more mainstream with bands such as arctic monkeys.
 They are mainly associated with some sort of guitar playing which is why people find
indie music hard to categorize.
Is it different/original/creative?
 It can be seen as quite unique as there are all sorts of different types of indie and it
can be categorised into other genres such as rock and pop.
 There are many diverse angles within Indie music.
 Indie music is lenient towards rock, alternative and pop.
The genuine audience:
 Predominantly males listen to it but females are also known for being interested in
Indie.
 The age group that Indie is predominantly aimed at is 16-25 year olds.
 Stereotypically known for wearing skinny jeans and checked shirts.
 Predominantly white British audience
Strengths of Choosing this Genre:
 It’s not entirely mainstream so there is a gap in the market for this genre.
 It’s a genre in which people may want to read as it is something different to the
typical Pop or Rock magazine.
Weaknesses of Choosing this Genre:
 People may not want to see something which isn’t mainstream. They may want to
read about a more mainstream genre of music such as Pop or Rock.
 There may not be as many people willing to buy a magazine on Indie Rock/Pop.
Specific IndieArtists:
 Arctic Monkeys
 The 1975
 The Killers
 The Strokes
 The Kooks
