NME Editions

All of these different editions of NME have a
slightly different layout linking with the artist
on the cover each week that the magazine is
published. However they all have the same
font for the masthead in every edition to
show that it is the same magazine and it is a
theme that NME use. The masthead used is
not always the same colour though, a lot of
the time it is red or red with white around the
sides. However the Jack White edition of
NME, for example the masthead is yellow
signifying that it is a special edition and
involves something different to what all of the
other editions involve.
Most of the NME covers have a white
background behind the artists apart from
some, and the reason for them not having a
white background links to the artist(s) on the
front.
Sometimes on the cover there is a lot of
writing to show that there is going to be lots
inside but then at other times there is a only a
small amount (e.g. Jack White special
edition). This shows that the magazines varies
but you can always tell what magazine it is
when you go into a shop because of the
masthead and most of the time the font that
is used. Also you will know when it is a special
edition as the colours are different and stand
out.
Indie history
Indie history:
• Indie is short for Independent. Indie music is a mix of lots of different types of
music, including pop, jazz, rock, blues and even poetry.
• Indie music was first created in the 1950’s and 60’s, but at this time this music was
very underground which meant that not many people would hear of this music.
Indie bands would have to play in small venues/garages.
• Finally in the 1980’s indie music grew in popularity but the artists involved in this
genre made music how they wanted too, this meant that they would not get
signed to a big producer, resulting in not making a lot of money, which is what they
preferred. They preferred to make there own music as they didn't really want to be
popular like pop music etc. Even thought indie music still isn't very popular, some
of the most well known indie bands started in small venues and their garages, and
starts with small CD’s.
• Indie rock that is involved in the indie category as a whole, is a genre of alternative
rock that started in the UK and the US. Indie rock has many sub genres in it
also, including: indie pop and jangle pop.
• In the 2000’s the music industry had changes and there was a growing importance
of the internet, indie rock bands became to have more commercial success.
