esign is the silent ambassador of your
Dbrand.” – Paul Rand
If we ever go through a flashback for say a
decade down the line, the only way one
visualizes it is by adding a filter of black
monotone, but if we look at it with a different
perspective it overall represents a Design. In a
way, not much has changed when it comes to
design. All that has happened is its
transformation with the advent of technology
and the implementation of creative ideas.
Though design was never a sought-after career
profile, the yesteryears’ generations had
embraced it unknowingly under its own name.
Integrating culture and traditions with art is like
an amalgamation of a masterpiece, which
creates every time these creative elements
come together. Contemplating the one-to-many
features and traversing diversified routes of the
Design fraternity, the education clan has put their
best foot forward to setup contemporary and
primeval design institutes.
These institutes operate with an all-inclusive
approach to bestow students with best-in-class
facilities, infrastructure, career opportunities and
exposures. Also, technology is a paperless
phenomenon, which has brought salient
concepts into play. The varied software available
is like the cherry on the cake, which adds
wonders to the creation of any and every design.
The initiatives taken by the design institutes are
immense which includes organizing seminars to
interact with the top-echelon designers,
showcasing students design portfolios through
exhibitions, planning study tours to visit historic
and ancient destinations, and many more. Giving
the students a chance at gaining knowledge in
this creative field and excel to their maximum
potential.

The construction of The Shard started in the year

it was declared as the tallest building in Western
Europe. Also called as the shard of glass, this
design was thought of by the architect Renzo

constructed using 11,000 glass panels and was
developed as a concept for a virtual city where

Situated in Jerusalem, the Dome of the Rock is a masterpiece of the Islamic architecture which is a 7 century building.
The pattern implemented in its architecture is inspired from nearby Byzantine churches and palaces. The appearance
though has seen significant changes in the Ottoman period as well as the modern period especially the gold plated roof
that was added later on. The interiors of the building were built using marble, mosaic and faience, while the exteriors
were decorated with Persian tiles in 1561. It has served as an example for architecture and new artistic endeavors for
more than a millennium.
THE
SHARD
Design is everywhere and in everything we do. It can be depicted in various forms be it a straight line or a single dot. But
the question arises how often does a design strike you? Design and art have no boundaries, they are representations of
an emotion or the creative powers an artist holds, and it is in every way a true form of beauty. The design fraternity has
meticulously evolved from generation to generation and continues to progress to this date. Adding the elements of culture
and traditions has uplifted the aura and allure of the designs created around the world. Shattering all the odds by
building contemporary and modern setups, mankind has experienced the creation of the greatest architectural wonders.
This list is an ode to those breathtaking marvels.

28. Back to BasicsBack to Basics
The term ‘Design’ has been defined intensely, the
word in itself is not naïve, and even then if we have
to define design in simple words, we believe,
‘Design is finding the gap and following logical steps to fill
up that gap’. Certainly, it can be elaborated and discussed
further specifically for different sub field in design, but if
we have to focus on gaps, the most important recent issue is
our environment. Air pollution, Water pollution, Global
warming, Plastic waste, etc. are the major problems, where
Indian designers are concentrating and developing creative
and innovative products to overcome the above
environmental issues. Though many more such efforts are
still to be required in this domain. The paradigm is now
shifting from human centric design to life centric design.
Now design is more inclusive, which does consider life as a
whole and not just fulfilling human needs.
‘Fashion’ is ‘lifestyle’ and yet ever changing, the term
‘sustainable’ appears in contrast with fashion. The fashion
industry has become the second largest polluting industry in
the world. From adding to landfills both post and pre-
consumer waste, polluting rivers with waste and sometimes
toxic dyes, adding harmful pesticides to groundwater that
feeds our crop to produce fibers which are manipulated in to
woven fabric. Keeping these facts in mind, various Indian
design schools and designers are constantly working to
develop the concept of ‘Sustainable Fashion’.
Many Indian designers are using traditional materials,
techniques, and folk art to design sustainable products. For
example ‘Mitti Cool’ ecofriendly earthenware products of
Mr. Mansukhbhai Prajapati brings out the best of clay
before the design fraternity, highlighting benefits of using
clay products and creating buzz in the design industry. Mitti
Cool abides by and supports various government schemes
and campaigns like Clean India, Make in India, Rural
Employment Scheme etc. while some designers are taking
inspiration from Indian folk art and creating products which
develop sustainable, economic, social system for the local
rural communities. For instance, Nina Sabnani, Professor
at IDC, IIT Mumbai has received national award for the
film ‘Hum Chitra Banate Hai’. The movie is based on the
tradition of painting among the Bheel Tribes of Madhya
Pradesh. The art form is known by the name of ‘Pithora’
and is a form of wall painting. This film not only makes the
audience aware about such art form but also able to
Sustainable Trend in Design Industry
communicate about the communities’ beliefs and social
practices. Promotion of this art form is helping these
communities in strengthening their social identities.
Kriti Jain, young fashion designer, introduced the brand
‘Doodlage’, which up cycle the industrial or pre/post
customer fabric waste by creating new wearable products
and tries to promote slow fashion against fast fashion.
Doodlage is also using biodegradable fabric made from
corn and banana fibers for their upcoming collections.
Though ‘The First Things First manifesto’ was written by
Ken Garland, British designers well known for his graphic
work, was initially published in 1964, which have created
the notion of social responsibility among designers. This is
regarded as one of the most imperative pieces of writing in
design, signs and supported by many western designers
including Brian Grimbly, Ken Briggs and Gerry Cinamon
and the manifesto was also published in its entirety in the
Guardian. Again In 2000 the manifesto was updated by
Adbusters magazine, and signed by 33 designers including
Jonathan Barnbrook, Irma Boom and Milton Glaser. This
rd
led to movements like ‘Buy Nothing Day’ observed on 23
of November concurrent by ‘Black Friday’ promoted by Ad
busters magazine based in Canada against consumerism.
Now after all this Cole Peters, a Canadian-born designer
based in the UK, has again updated the manifesto for 2014,
aiming to reflect the influence of the Internet on
communications and design. This might have also impacted
the Indian design industry in at some level. Though for
Indian designers going back to basic was rather convenient.
The crafts such as ‘Kantha’, (famous crafts of Bengal) were
initially used to recycle the used, worn fabric. Now many
Indian designer brands are using the same technique but in
altered forms.
Design Institutes such as Industrial Design Centre, NIFT,
NID, Ambedakar Design, faculty of Design at Manipal
University Jaipur etc. are focusing their curriculum on
sensitizing the design community to several relevant issues.
Designer Anita Dongre also believes that, “Today, fashion
is no longer limited to just trends and innovative designs. It
is also a means to encourage conversations on sustainable
choices.” It is time to accept and respond that we “Humans
are builders and creators—but how can we build
thoughtfully, without disturbing our environment”. T R

32. DesignA Multi-Faceted Industry
Design is a vast topic as it
revolves around every other
industry, be it any field or
sector, design is everywhere. It has
become the center of attraction like the
first thing that catches one’s attention.
The visually appealing things become
a first option easily due to its alluring
art, the color combination and overall
how the product is being crafted.
As design is seen everywhere, the
creativity and innovation which comes
with it has no boundaries. Living in the
modern world, technology adds the/an
extra touch of finish to a design which
definitely makes it stand out. Paper and
pencil are almost like designer’s bread
and butter and any designer is
incomplete without them, but with the
help of technology the process has
become very efficient. The availability
of various apps and tools have eased
out the designing process, a basic
structure can be enhanced with a
number of brushes, colors, filters and
much more. The options present are
immense, be it an editing app, layout
app, video-maker apps and many
others, all combined together gives an
excellent final product.
A designer has the power to shape the
world and bring a different perspective

Since its inception, AMA’s motto has been ‘Making Sense Out of Space’ which we believe & carry religiously

40. Designing a home is always very
challenging and motivating.
Challenging because each individual
needs/requirements are so different &
peculiar as every person has his/her
own taste & lifestyle to add to the
design. It often happens that two
members of the same family don't
reach a consensus during the
planning stage and we have to find a
mutually agreeable way out. But this
is motivating also as it pushes us
harder to create something new in
each of our projects.
Our design influences are grounded
in a mix of contemporary culture and
futuristic trends. “There is too much
noise in design currently” hence
tapping the current focus on
functionality without clutter, we
target our interior design spaces to be
spacious, serene, and quiet.
We are changing and changing for
good – AMA Team
Going Green
Going Green is what we hear
everywhere and people speak about it
without knowing nothing about it.
The idea of green technology is to
conserve what we are loosing and to
save the environment. My idea of
going green is saving the mother
earth from exploitation by using
materials which are eco friendly.
Let’s take the example of Bamboo
trees & LED lights to discuss green
technology
Bamboo trees grow quickly. It takes
3-4 years for a bamboo tree to
mature. It's a fast process. They are
light weight and strong, durable and
easy to maintain. Its got more
moisture resistant and hence is a very
good option for wooden flooring.
LED Lights are something that we
use and are suggesting to more and
more of our clients for direct as well
as indirect lighting. They are a power
saver in comparison to CFl or tube
lights or traditional bulbs. They don’t
produce heat & are available at very
cheap rates in the market.
Acceptance of Ideas through
Technology
There is nothing as a different design,
it's the same thing done in different
manner. It's just that we need to think
differently.
The best creative thinking occurs
outside of the usual systems at work.
The problem is, most of us live and
work inside the system. So you have
to purposely jam the controls. Create
blips in the patterns. Get out of your
comfort zone. Put yourself in harm's
way.
I believe that we in India are growing
only with the exposure received via
technology (with the access to world
information via platforms such as
Facebook and Twitter) and are slowly
overcoming our short comings. We
have many companies today in the
market dealing in modular kitchens,
automated homes, etc. Sooner alarm
systems and smoke detectors will
become a compulsion in our houses.
The use of cameras, remote lighting
and scanners for doors has become a
very common practice today.
We are changing and changing for
good.
The Market in India
For me, wood is the most important
element in any space especially in a
house. Wood creates style and living.
The business of wood is an ever
expanding Market in India.
As we are experiencing a change in
today’s market, people expectations
have increased as they want
everything expedited and perfect.
Today the mentality is not to use
furniture or designs in a house for 15-
20 years but for a short span of 5
years. Everyone wants sleek and
straight line look for their houses.
Gone are the days when clients use to
demand furniture and storage every
where. Today all they want is more of
open spaces.
We normally get 2-3 months to finish
a 2-3 BHK house. Instead of making
furniture on site we are moving to
modular/ machine made furniture,
modular kitchens, ready- made sofas,
dinning etc. It helps us in meeting our
project deadlines and at times turns
out to be cheaper as well.
The market is now ready to explore
and many new international as well
as Indian brands have entered the
market and doing really well.
Furniture, Tiles, Kitchen, accessories
etc are available ready-made and the
designs are altered and chosen to
one's choice as well. T R

42. o the question is – what do you
Swant to become once you grow

answered options be Doctor, Engineer,
or Lawyer, the patent career options
individual choose and plan an
educational and professional journey
accordingly. This almost seems like
answering a MCQ in a test, option A,
option B, option C or none of the
above. This last option is the answer to
maybe a very few questions, but yes it
can be the correct answer.
Gone are the days, when students had
limited career options and were forced
to do something which was completely
opposite to their goals. As the saying
goes ‘change is the only constant’, it
has come true in this scenario and new,
fresh, out-of-the-box career options
have come into play. Living in such
modern times, the numerous doors of
opportunities have opened and a wide-
range of career choices has flourished.
Over the last few years, a boon is
experienced in the growth of diversity
and creative ideas that students have
come up with. The society and
communities have also broadened their
“None of the Above”
mindsets and are going forward with a
practical approach.
Discovering the ‘one-to-many’
Career Options
Taking all this into consideration,
choosing a career is often the most
difficult part in a student’s life as the
succeeding years depend on it. The
students should be well aware of their
areas of interest and set short or long
term goals to achieve them
accordingly. This is will help the
students to explore different fields and
decide which one of them is most
suitable and favorable for the longer
run. These kinds of experiments should
be conducted at a tender age, in fact
school authorities should take effective
initiatives for students to appear
aptitude tests and take consulting. In
this way, the students are able to
understand their positives and
negatives and know more about a
particular field so as to plan ahead for
the educational and professional
journey.
Talking about the various fields, one of
the most hyped and talked about field
is Design. This particular field has
shown tremendous alternations and has
stepped up a notch day-by-day and
become a brand value in itself. Design
is a form of art just like any other, be it
fashion designing, graphic designing or
even interior designing, it was a
medium to express oneself through
creative and innovative ideas. The
graph of designing has evolved and is
continuously on a rise keeping in
account with the on-going momentum.
Hence, it has become a potential career
for the youth.
A balance is observed now in terms of
number of engineers, doctors and
designers, one of the major reason of
this also due to the changing lifestyles
and the ever so fascinating social
media. Be it wearing the outfits that
scream style and elegance or the
beautiful crafted contemporary setups
of houses, design is everywhere. The
world of design is clearly on cloud
nine and is exploring untouched
directions to reach new destinations
every now and then. This in turn has
given students that extra push, which is
often needed in the start of their
designing career.

45. Srishti Institute of Art, Design & Technology
(Srishti) is one of the most prestigious design schools
in Asia. It was established in 1996 by the Ujwal Trust
in Bangalore, India. This visionary, experimental, and
curatorial institute of media arts and sciences offers art and
design education at the undergraduate, post-graduate, and
PhD levels. Srishti, as an institute, seeks to pull together the
latest art, craft, and design ideas and practices from around
the world and contextualize them in the emerging Indian
context.
Pursuing Excellence in Education and Infrastructure
Srishti constitutes seven schools, and jointly there are 42
different programs on offer across various levels of
undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Their academic
programs reflect the breadth of their vision. They are
committed to cater to the whole spectrum and ecosystem of
capabilities. The institute’s programs offer opportunities to
make creative impact at different levels of practice through
capabilities developed in the areas of law, environment and
policy, media art and sciences, education and development,
business, and humanities.
The process of creative impact making is interdisciplinary
and draws upon the disciplines of art, design, and
technology synthetically. Conventional perspectives to
sense making, problem-framing, and envisioning are
complemented by new methods and approaches that are
informed through the intersections of art, design, and
technology.
Srishti’s formative matrix of highly skilled art & design
professionals, educators, scholars, researchers, and a vibrant
and engaged student body is deeply networked with local,
regional, and global communities. Dynamic exchanges with
various networks ensure that the pedagogies offered
through their programs are constantly renewed by their
connections with these networks. The institute actively
supports and encourages the development of networks
across a range of disciplines that forge relationships,
augmenting the impact made through their academic
programs.
Nurturing Creativity
The institute is of the opinion that the world is becoming
increasingly connected, networked, and interdependent, and
there is a greater need to change our methods, which need
to be inclusive, collaborative, and transformational.
Together, these capabilities will make a creative impact on a
broader range of societal transformation opportunities in a
systemic, multi-disciplinary fashion, driven by sustainable
human-centric values. This will leverage the inter-
disciplinary potential of art, design, and technology in
innovative ways, ultimately empowering society to realize
better future.
Collectively and individually, from entry-level practitioners
to working professionals and advanced practitioners, Srishti
is engaged in creative impact making. They believe in
creating an image of a world where creative impact making
is widely practiced and envisions a creative individual
practitioner who thrives in such an environment as a
proactive change and impact maker. The institute
emphasizes on having a transferable portfolio of
capabilities that can enable effective performance in the
wide range of circumstances that are inevitable – in
essence, an individual ahead of the curve.
Collaborative Endeavors
UNESCO Chair in Culture, Habitat, and Sustainable
Development in India was established at Srishti in 2014.
This recognition is nominated by the Government of India
at the national level and evaluated and granted by the
UNESCO General Assembly at the international level. The
chair recognizes the work of the UNESCO Chair holder and
the institution in contributing to UNESCO’s mission and
goals as well as provides a platform for furthering work in
its focus area. It provides an opportunity to engage in
policies and strategies at the state, national, and
international levels, to build global networks and
partnerships with other UNESCO chairs and educational
institutions in related fields across the world.
Srishti is a member of two International organizations,
Cumulus and ICSID. The Cumulus Conference 2017
“Letters to the Future” was hosted by Srishti in Bengaluru.
Srishti has MoUs with over 40 different colleges and
universities in different parts of the world facilitating
student and faculty exchange programs.
Building Bright Careers
The institute provides a platform where students get the
opportunity to meet industry professionals during the
exhibition of their final thesis/capstone work and are
recruited directly. Moreover, Srishti’s students also have to
undertake a mandatory internship for a period of six weeks
in their third year. Accomplishments of Srishti students and
faculty are continually featured in the press. In 2018, Srishti
was featured in 60 different newspapers/magazines both in
print and online formats. They also have a growing
database of companies and NGO’s which is shared with
their students and alumni offering internship and job
opportunities.T R
