In 2018, the intersection of technology and human rights is a hot topic. But while we debate net neutrality and the web as a utility, 92% of US government sites still fail to meet basic accessibility standards (as the law requires). A lot of lip service is given to the need to build inclusive, accessible sites, but when it comes down to it, we treat accessibility like something nice to have rather than a core principle and necessity.
Sarah Federman explains why inclusive design is so vital to the future of the web and shares techniques for making accessibility a priority in your org through efforts both top-down and grassroots. You’ll leave knowing why it’s so easy to cut corners in the most basic and core task of making everyone feel welcome when they visit your site, and what you can do to make the internet a better place. It’s time for technology to truly be for everyone.

- Accessibility options particularly valuable to this population
- Decisions that need to be made about different program-related issues

- Our recommendations for effective programs

How can an industry that places empathy at the core of its practice ignore the big problems facing South Africa and the continent? In a rapidly changing design landscape will UX designers even be relevant in the future? UX designers exist at a unique interdisciplinary juncture and it gives us the opportunity to create inspiring responses to these questions. With the maturity of design thinking, social innovation, and lean startup, we are uniquely placed to re-apply our skills to find new relevance and greater impact in doing work that matters. But taking action is not easy, even if it can be known what is to be done. In this talk David will explore the new mindsets, skills and attitudes UX designers need to adopt to shift from merely doing design to becoming design activists.
“As Product Professionals we are told our job is to create products that either solve user problems or take advantage of opportunities. The challenge during these times this seems hard to find as new product innovations are being released every day. Are we running out of problems or opportunities? No, we are simply been only looking at the problem/opportunity from our usual viewpoint of the average user. What if we looked at it from a different lens? What if we look at people who always struggle with problems based on their environments not accommodating their unique needs? I argue, this is the gold mine of opportunity of creating innovative products. Solving for the mismatches of people with disabilities will lead to innovations for your users and customers of all abilities! We will discuss the real-world examples of this, how to do it, and future market demand. We will all be disabled one day, some of us just beat you to it”
Designing for difference: Are you failing at the most important design challengeWhitney Quesenbery
There is no such thing as a “typical user.” People may have similar goals or jobs to get done, but they bring differences in preferences, knowledge, language, interaction style, and perspectives. Broadening our vision to design for differences is a conscious act of innovation. It starts with embracing the tools of accessibility, plain language, and language access for modern, responsive design. And broadening our research and testing to include the full diversity of our audiences. If you aren’t designing for difference, ask yourself who are you leaving out.
At the Center for Civic Design, we’ve learned that designing democracy requires changing our practice and how we approach our work. As one project partner put it, “If all we do is make it a little easier for people who already vote, we have failed.” From voter guides to ballots, the goal of our work is to expand civic engagement and participation - including everyone, with all their differences
