SXSW Interactive TCU: Learning to Change the World through Technology, Innova...Beata Jones
This presentation describes an honors colloquium offered at a private university in the U.S. which created a socially networked class experience that bridged the classroom with life outside of it. We offered an interdisciplinary, immersive, inquiry-based learning environment around the South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive conference in Austin, culminating with student research projects and a TED-like event back on campus, after the conference. The course promoted the themes of technology, innovation and entrepreneurship at the university, while strengthening students’ communication skills within an interdisciplinary domain, leading to unique opportunities for the participating students. The course attempted to build a culture of innovation based on collaboration, interdisciplinary inquiry, and intrinsic motivation.
The course built connections between the students and the 30K+ technology, innovation and entrepreneurship community that attends annually the SXSW Interactive festival. The festival brings speakers and startups in the technology, social media, business, and communications fields for five days each spring, providing attendees with a chance to see technology innovation and entrepreneurship in action as new companies are announced, and new products are launched.
In the course, we asked the students to embrace distinct themes of SXSW Interactive so that each student had a unique, inspiring, and highly relevant experience. Students researched their select themes within the framework of technology, innovation and entrepreneurship contexts, heard from speakers, attended an opportunity recognition competition with other entrepreneurship students on campus, planned their conference attendance, attended SXSW sessions all day during the festival, networked with attendees and completed structured interviews, wrote about their experiences using new and traditional media, and organized a TED-like event back on campus, with presentations to faculty and fellow students about the things they learned. All the elements of their experiences were captured in individually themed ePortfolia, available online, which include the final learning reflection and synthesis.

In December 2014 Professor Jason Heyes, along with Dr Paul Lewis from the University of Birmingham, co-hosted a one-day workshop on ‘Regulating work and employment: recent changes/future prospects’. The event was attended by representatives of ACAS, the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), the CIPD and the Gangmasters Licensing Authority (GLA), as well as leading academics and early career researchers. The workshop was the culmination of a two-year project, funded by the British Academy and Leverhulme Trust, which has assessed the consequences of labour market policy reforms in the EU since the start of the economic crisis in 2008.
During the workshop, Jason Heyes, Paul Lewis and Mark Beatson – chief economist at the CIPD – discussed the implications of employment rights reforms for workers and employers while Dr Tim Vorley (Sheffield), Professor Ute Stephan (Aston) and Professor Simon Down (Anglia Ruskin) spoke about the impact of employment regulations on small businesses. Mark Heath from the GLA and Professor Linda Dickens from the University of Warwick assessed long-standing and emerging challenges facing government agencies responsible for ensuring compliance with employment rights while Tony Thomas and Paula Lovitt provided insights into BIS’ review of employment status.

Yet, when we simply leave students to their own devices, technology can serve to depersonalize their experiences. This is especially true of their educational experiences. Meanwhile, as teachers we struggle to effectively manage truly differentiated learning environments. However, this need not be the case. Together, we will explore the possibilities and potential afforded by today’s technology and empower you to utilize technology resources to make learning personal, meaningful, and differentiated for today’s connected students.
Serendipity, that unexpected but fortunate discovery or learning experience that happened accidentally, is often characterized by successful people as a “chance encounter” or a “lucky break”. In reality, luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity (Roman Philosopher, Seneca), and gifted students in particular have the preparation, but may not have the skills to leverage technology to create opportunities. This session highlights how gifted students are uniquely qualified to leverage technology to achieve their goals, illustrates the strategies successful individuals use to make their own luck, and provides concrete examples and activities that can be applied in classrooms or at home to enable gifted students to manifest their potential for self-fulfillment and the betterment of society.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

#1 Introduction week: What’s your passion?
It’s tough to give a good presentation on a topic that you’re not passionate about! This meeting is
all about getting to know your fellow club members and spending some time identifying and
articulating the ideas that motivate each member of your group. Later on, each club member will
present and record their own idea worth spreading in the form of a short TED-style Talk.
