Online Discussion Questions

My name is Zhuorong Zhang, my American name is Leon and I am a Economics
major student. I take this class with one of my good friend because he say that it is a
fun class to take. This class has lot of things that make me excited for this new world
of construction and it is good that people are into the topic. This class open up a new
world of me and though I was never interested in this, but when I learn about Ford and
Thomas Jefferson and how they evolve the world with architecture I was amaze and
that is what I want to portray in this.
Our 2017 Design-A-Baby Survey Yielded the Following characteristics as indicated by a majority of you:
Currently, we have the technology for you to choose many of the survey characteristics in
your future child, and this ability to choose poses some ethical questions. Of course, we all
want the best for our own child. However, as we move into a more collective situation, we
need to consider how the consequences of majority choices for children might change who
we are as a species. In the film trailer FIXED, you were introduced to the dilemma of living
in a culture in which the “science-fiction of human enhancement” has become almost a way
of life, from prenatal genetic screening to bionic body parts. In the video, “A Man with
Three Ears” you are introduced to an artist who is using current technology to move
humans beyond their current abilities. Last week, Juan Enriquez asked us if it is ethical to
evolve the human body. All of these videos suggest that the concept of disability ‘as we know
it’ could cease to exist in the future.
What lessons do you think we should learn from history when thinking about emerging
enhancement technologies and reproductive technologies? What are some of the possible
consequences (both positive and negative) of being able to design our bodies and the bodies
of our children? What ethical quandaries do these technologies pose?
It is not a surprise why genetic modification on human is illegal and it should be because
there is lot of ethical issue and problem when we talk about changing gene and stuff to
make perfect people and it is not right for us to use technology like that. I do think that
we have done test on animal and mostly fail because animal die in like a day or two days.
So we should learn from history and not do that. There is good thing about this, if you kid
is going grow up with cancer and you can prevent that it is good! But it is not ethical and
not good if you just want him/her to have nice big eyes and skinny bones. There is one
thing that people should never cross and that is how we are made and how we are born
but it is okay if it is use to give our child a healthier life.

The two most frequently mentioned models of disability are the ‘social’
and the ‘medical’ models. The medical model of disability views
disability as a medical ‘problem’ that belongs to the disabled individual.
The social model of disability, in contrast, draws on the idea that it is
society that disables people, through designing everything to meet the
needs of the majority of people who are not disabled. There is a
recognition within the social model that there is a great deal that society
can do to reduce, and ultimately remove, some of these disabling
barriers, and that this task is the responsibility of society, rather than
the disabled person.
Select one of the seven universal design principles, and post photographs
that show both a positive and a negative example of the principle. Then
address the following question: How do your examples empower or
disempower various people? Describe the specific features of the positive
example and the specific features of the negative example. Discuss ways
that the positive example could be even further improved.
The seven design principle I will be choosing for this topic is something that
is use every day in all part of the world and it is invented for people to be
able to climb with easier time. Everyone know what a stair is it is a design to
help people save space by building higher and let you get to second floor.
Everyone know stair so I do not post picture but it is problem when you have
to put in effort to get up the stair and walk step so there is a low physical
effort principal that I am choosing. This is escalator it helps people use very
little effort to climb up or down. It has advantage because if thing is
heavy you can put on escalator it helps old people and young children
who have things to carry and have trouble walking stair. A negative is
that it is often time not use for that it is make people very lazy and that is
not a good thing so we have to improve this so that people won’t get too
lazy and end up gaining weight. http://1000awesomethings.com/2013/01/25/845-good-escalator-etiquette-3/
Thread 2: Response to Enriquez TED Talk: “What Will Humans Look Like in 100
Years?”
For this question, we will focus on Juan Enriquez’ Life Two civilization, which alters
fundamental aspects of the body. We are living longer than ever before in human
history. Enriquez argues that, because of advances in bio-medical technology, the
possibility of living to 120 years of age and beyond is quite possible for many of us in
this D+D class. Assuming that his assertion is accurate, how do you think extended life
spans will change our societies and built environments? What new issues might
designers face because of extended life spans?
I think with the advancement in science and medicine people will for sure live much
longer, but that is if they have the means to. Even in today, not everyone can afford to
get a body check up every month and some people don't even go to the doctors for years.
Not all people can afford the medical technologies and I am sure the cost of living is very
high. As a designer I will have to be able to put cost into the spectrum and say that to
give elderly a place to live is the main goal. Lot of old people today are left by their
Children/Grand Children to fend for themselves because with the increase cost of
everything it is impossible to take care of family while looking after the old. Therefore, I
think the largest issue is over population, it is even a problem today where old people
live longer and at same time baby being born. We will need to build apartments 20X
taller and 50% more efficient in spacing to solve that problem. Regent park is the best
example that you need an environment that is lively to thrive.

Does Not Equal Practice"

Hidden Ways
Author Steven Flusty categorized five types of disciplinary architecture that
perpetuate what he calls urban spatial injustice: 1) stealthy, 2) slippery, 3)
crusty, 4) prickly, and 5) jittery. Go out into the city of Buffalo, and
find/photograph two examples from the list of five. Identify what type of space
you’ve photographed and why it might discriminate against a specific
population. Identify the location where you took the photograph, and make
certain that you are in at least one of the two photographs.
When you think about the city of Buffalo, you think about the Niagara Falls. From
the List I think the Rail that protect people from falling is a good architecture
because it serves a purpose and it save many people lives every day and get no
recognition at all so it is something I think photographed terrifically. This place is
Stealthy for that reason I gave; it secretly protects people. Also it is also very
slippery because everyone can come here it is free, but it is funny because such a
free place still drives lot of revenue. I think this place discriminates against a
specific group of people and that is Canadians because when I ask American they
think that American side is best and Canadian is bad.
Since the falls is visible to all it is easily one of the most intrusive hidden ways.

People Like Us
After almost two decades of public assistance, Tammy Crabtree took herself
and her family off the welfare rolls. But her job cleaning bathrooms at a local
Burger King barely paid the bills. Crabtree wanted to do better and hopes to
go to college and become a teacher.
Imagine this scenario. You are a designer who works at the well-known
firm, iPD (Integrated Planning and Design). You work on a team with
planners, urban designers, policy designers, architects, and social designers.
You have been tasked to develop/design a way for Tammy Crabtree and her
family (and others with situations similar to Tammy’s) to move themselves out
of poverty. What will your team to do to help Tammy and her family achieve
their goals? What approach will your team take to address this difficult
problem?
Poverty is something majority of the world deal with lot of country in the world
live in poverty and we are lucky to not be a part of that. I think it is important for
people to help those in need like Tammy Crabtree and her family. This is a hard
discussion because there really is not a lot of information about Tammy and her
status and current situation because you know we do not know her wages and her
income and what she need to use to pay bill like electric and gas bill. Let us be
realistic, it is impossible to get them out of poverty unless you have money to give
them but they will use up all the money before they get out of poverty because they
not smart with the money. It is not possible to just give them cash and a job is
meaningless if they cannot perform and no education to do so. So my team and I
will first build small houses inside a community that has a school in center and these small house will have all things included free.
They will have one central bathroom for girl and boy very big and private shower facility. They will have time card and when you
shower you swipe and every day you get one swipe per card these swipe provide 6 minutes to shower to keep water bill down. Also
people take advantage of the system so even when they wash hand they have a 1-minute limit. There will be an electric generating
room, if they want electricity for the night they must swipe card and ride the stationary bicycle to charge energy, this way they can
exercise and get electricity. The rest of time is focus in school work giving them education to go out and get themselves out of
poverty.

Last year, North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory signed into law a bill that repealed
local LGBT anti-discrimination laws, and required people to use the bathroom that
corresponded with the biological gender written on their birth certificates. This
prompted massive backlash. McCrory stated, “You know, we all have to make
adjustments in life.
Should people be required to use the bathroom that corresponds with the biological
gender written on their birth certificate? State why AND state why not. In other
words, to receive full credit for this question, you need to present an argument for
both sides of the issue. As a designer, how would you solve this gender dilemma
The bill that repeals the anti-discrimination law is a big flaw to the current law
system that keep thing in check. In my opinion it is big problem when people are
going out of their way to make others feel bad. I believe very strongly that everyone
should have the rights to do things that is within the law code. For example, the
North Carolina government think that it is okay to ban anti-discrimination law in
public bathrooms in order to make others that complain feel better. See the
problem? There really not a problem, some people are born into another body one
they do not like, you cannot force a girl to go to girl bathroom if she feels like a
dude. I can see why the state would want people to use bathroom stated with
gender on their birth certificate because that way it will just stop problem in
general, they think hurting a few feelings is worth the safety of the people and they
are not wrong because it is true people are using this as an opportunity to do bad
and that many people are abused too. But as a designer I think we should just make
a gender neutral bathroom where everyone gets a small room and the only space
share is the washing place. So bunch of small room for stalls and one central area to
wash and dry hand to keep cost down.

In their chapter “Communicating Gender,” Maya Ganesh and Gabi Sublime discuss two primary
visual advocacy approaches: 1) get the idea, and 2) stories in data. Find a new example of either of
the two visual advocacy approaches to gender issues, and post it in this thread
First, identify the approach. Then explain how the designer uses the approach to
communicate a gender issue. Is the approach effective in this example? Why or why not?
How could this graphic be improved?
Gender issue has always been very serious with me, my dad a great man he did a lot for me and
my mom when we were poor he would come home every day tired and sad that he could not do
more for us. Every now and then he would have argument with my mom and I can feel her sadness
yet she did not argue back or when he hit her she will not fight back. After my dad tried very hard
he finally became successful. When he came back with the check that change out life around, he
cried, he was very sad. He held my mom and cried so much that I can barely understand what he is
saying but thinking back now I know loud and clear that he is apologizing. He said I'm sorry for
stealing your future by burdening you with a child, I’m sorry for trapping you at home and not
letting you chase your dream, I'm sorry I yelled and abuse you because of my temper. At that time,
I began to realize that he has respect for my mother and from then on I have never seen him angry
at her and never once did he raise his voice at her.

Recent controversies about sports branding focus on ethnicity. The Washington
Redskins team is just one example of the larger controversy, but it receives the most
public attention due to the name itself being defined as derogatory or insulting in
modern dictionaries, and the prominence of the team representing the nation’s
capital. Recent controversies about sports branding focus on ethnicity. The
Washington Redskins team is just one example of the larger controversy, but it
receives the most public attention due to the name itself being defined as derogatory
or insulting in modern dictionaries, and the prominence of the team representing the
nation’s capital. Should sports team branding designers use ethnic references
(Fighting Irish, Boston Celtics, Atlanta Braves, etc.)? Why? Why not? What are some
of the complexities of this issue? could sports team branding designers use ethnic
references (Fighting Irish, Boston Celtics, Atlanta Braves, etc.)? Why? Why not?
What are some of the complexities of this issue?
I think that the Washington redskins as a team name is not that bad. The United State
capitol is Washington and when you think that the country is built on the native
American than the name is that not bad at all. I know what the media want and it is to cause
a problem that should not be problem. The question is, should sports team branding
designers use ethnic references? Well the answer is simple, if it generates revenue than yes
they very well should. It is not good and not right, but that is not going to put food on table
so if that is right with their hearts and they are doing that to put food on table we cannot
judge. I think that the issues are very complex because it affects different people in different
way thus we cannot argue that unless people change we will not be able to stop them from
branding.

Equity x Design
Critique either the MLK Memorial or the National Museum of African American
History and Culture using equity design’s core beliefs and/or design principles. (Use the
beliefs or principles that are most relevant to your critique rather than all of them
The National Museum of African American art to me is like work of art that show the history
and work put in by African Americans in the United States. During that period of time, equal
right movement and many other movements occur and people want to have the same equality
and so when the museum was proposing lot of people do not like idea of museum make just
for black people and there is lot of problems with the core belief and the principle design of
this museum explain in the equity design’s motives.
when we look at the structure we think that it is a historical piece it is use to memory lot of
people who work hard and fought hard for equal right in America so that is main motive but I
think many people want to forgot and not remember slave built this country and so this
structure has a sensitivity that deprives people of inequality and also give people values.

The abolitionist poster, the Brookes, is an iconic image that often is included in exhibits that
explore issues of race and power. It was commissioned by Thomas Clarkson in 1788, and
the Committee of the Abolition of Slavery used it to inform and shock the public. While
some consider the poster as an important component of the abolitionist campaign, it
recently “has been strongly criticized by some individuals and groups of African heritage as
providing a very limited view of the history of the transatlantic slave trade, resistance and
abolition (Hudson 2007).” The lesson here is that how a viewer sees an image is dependent
upon his/her social, economic, and cultural position. Keeping this in mind, find another
iconic graphic that addresses racial issues and post it for others in your group to view. (Add
it to your response by clicking on the picture in the tools section.
The Image I chose is Martin Luther king Junior, this picture is super important to me because it is
the most important part of American history. In this photo King is giving his very important I
have a dream speech it is his most important part of his life and so i think when he looks at this
image he will be more proud than us that look at it. It is because he works so hard to fight for this
moment so when he looks at the image he is going to have different meaning than us and so the
cultural background and issues when he looks the photo means his life. That is why I think that it
is possible for the difference of intergeneration. I am Chinese and so when I look at picture I do
not feel the same as let say an African American, but I am sure that when African American see
this image they will know him right away, and they will see his vision for a better America

Imagine that you are part of a urban planning and design firm working with Emily Talen
(author of “Design That Enables Diversity”) and Kent Larson (who gave the TED
Talk "Brilliant Designs to Fit More People In Every City" The thee of you have been tasked
with developing a plan to rebuild Pruitt Igoe in St. Louis. City officials told the three of you
that that they want to do it right this time. Identify three strategies for rebuilding Pruitt
Igoe in ways that promise to be more successful. What would Talen do? What would
Larson do? What would you do? How would your strategies differ from those of the
original urban planners/designers of the project? Why would your strategies be more
effective?
Do you know what we do in China when something like this happen? We ignore it and use the
saying Out of Sight out of Mind. That is harsh but it is the only way until we can think about
something better! Consider this poor people together, building a home for all of them would
be impossible yet having them all crammed into an apartment is less than ideal that is why the
Pruit Igoe failed and had to be demolished because people were doing bad things to each other
stealing, violence, and rape. This is not unthinkable when you consider who lives in those
complex, evil born new evil. I think that what would help the rebuilding of Pruitt Igoe is to
start off with a new style of building, Like Talen would agree diversity will increase
production, production as in more creativity more drive and more will to do work. I agree with
Talen and thus If we are going to spend money to construct and plan successfully, an
apartment style giant will be downright unacceptable. While I also agree that "New"
Technology and innovation is important so three strategies I would use is a complete mix of
three individual’s ideas. First I would add a central pound inside a more military style
complex, because there is a large population we need them to be surrounded by nature like
riverside because that way even if there is financial crisis, the large body of waters can provide
fun and food. I will also, have work, public work that people gather to do, this will spread
awareness whether it is littering about throwing garbage to garbage can or to like be more smart about what you do. I will also put a
public bus stop so that it can take them to locations that are design for cheap shopping providing more options other than before. This
will deter them from luxury that they do not need and will also provide necessities. I believe diversity is a big issue so make sure you
do not label in any form.

John Levy’s article, “An Overview: The Need for Planning,” discussed ways in
which planning can determine the characteristics of a place. For example, some
smaller towns restrict the heights of buildings to maintain a certain scale. How
did planning define the character of the place in which you grew up?
I grow up in Guangzhou province of China, and that only define my ethnicity. The
planning of Guangzhou is every easily described as a mess, When I was young
everything really was a mess because people were poor and thus created houses with
anything and really did not have much of a building plan. As I grow up I see things
change, I see taller and taller towers being built and bigger malls, stadiums, parking
lots and apartments going into the sky. I think that the character is change, in
fact China is change. When I looked into the sky as a kid, I could see clouds and stars,
now I see towers with lights and fog in the sky. The planning soon changes to a more
river based design because a lot of the most expensive and most beautiful buildings are
near the river and it is like a dream when you watch it from the boat that this is
actually such a beautiful place. Guangzhou has a lot of flaws because the difference in
wealth is too big and because of that it sometimes causes an issue. Think about a fish
tank top half is beautiful water with fishes swimming, the under half is rocks and snails
crawling. That is the planning of Guangzhou, they make the water more and more
beautiful while neglecting and not caring for the rocks and hopes that the snails will
clean it up themselves. That is less than colorful but that really is the characters that
define the place I grew up.

COLLAPSE
Andrew Ballantyne and Peter Zumthor present ideas about architecture that seem to value
the sensorial and material elements of life. How are Ballantyne’s and Zumthor’s
viewpoints on architecture alike? More importantly, how do they differ?
Architecture is a fancy way to say building buildings that look like they were buildings built
well when compared to other buildings. Please do not misunderstand me I think that that is
beautiful and it is good that people like architecture so much so that they study it in lot of way
like Andrew Ballantyne and Peter Zumthor who are expert in the field of Architectural
buildings. Both have that in common and they think the same with the buildings meaning they
think that the best form of flattery is how each people think about the building, like the building
has to mean a lot to its people and it must make them feel good. The Paris Eiffel tower and the
falling tower of Pisa, both of these structure means more to its people and that is the coolest
thing. They also have very different idea on the ways buildings should be built, and even though
they think that both buildings have more meaning than to be use to keep people warm they think
that the field of architecture is something out of opinion. Ballantyne enjoys the old buildings,
structures and architecture style of ancient times like Rome and Greek, in his quote, “the
masterful, correct, and magnificent play of volumes brought together in light.” this quote shows
his love for quality style of building. Unlike Ballantyne who see the beauty of houses and
structures without life as a masterpiece, Zumthor wanted to focus on the current state of
building, zumthor thinks that buildings that are traditional is not styling enough and is boring.
He likes modern buildings and it is something that makes the two different. This is
exemplified when both wants to enhance imagination
https://www.pinterest.com/francesca0160/paper/
. Your readings and viewings this week present different ways of thinking about architecture.
Mies Van der Rohe describes architecture as “The will of the epoch translated into space.”
Andrew Ballantyne describes architecture as the background for life. Jeanne Gang describes it
as the act of building relationships. This is the easiest question ever given! I love to talk about
buildings and with this week’s readings and material I say that my two favorite is the Capital
building of Virginia Design by Thomas Jefferson and Ford and Khans assembly line! I think
that it is one of the best sensible building of his time because of how Thomas Jefferson kind
build the building even if he is not there! Thomas Jefferson is a great example of a self-taught
architects that only sought after perfection in his structures, that is why when he came back
from France and he saw what the slaves and elite constructors create he become super mad and
even angry. He asks for change as soon as possible, when he got back and saw no steps he was
furious but you can only ask for so much when you are an ocean away from American. The
technology of the time was very slow so translating his idea to reality was lot of times harder
than it is now especially a perfectionist like Jefferson. That was the difficulty and
communication is the second most difficult problem, compare to my second choice which is
Henry Ford’s amazing assembly line. That pose a lot of threat since it has never been done but
it is impressive because the design is so unique and it reflects the time perfectly! Think
industrial revolution. assembly line it is hand and hand! The assembly line reflects the culture
since now many people no skill can work during that period of boom and even the challenge
that happen before with slow build process is now fix and improve.

Which of the 2016 IDEA Gold Award products seems to defy the Cradle-to-
Cradle concept developed by architect William McDonough and chemist Dr.
Michael Braungart? How does this product resist or disregard the concept?
Provide an example of any product that embraces Cradle-to-Cradle design
Cradle to cradle design concept developed by architect William McDonough and
Chemist Micheal Braungart, is a concept that will save the world from its destruction.
People don't understand that being wasteful is only causing harm and is not doing
good, this idea of global warming being fake is another reason why the design concept
is not played out more. One more thing everyone know that one percent of the world's
population owns 99% of the world money, so if they do not understand, no they do not
care than our design concept will be useless. I think the IDEA gallery has one of the
worst selection of inventions simply because most of these items are not recyclable.
The Vive VR glasses for one is made with plastic, and those materials that are put into
the Vive are not re-useable nor does it call for upgrades. So that is why it does not
apply to the concept however I know of is apple iPhone. Since they push out new
device every year some people that buy it every year will now recycle their old
phones. Apple than will take the phone in and reuse parts.
products/story?id=37872881" This is actually important because it will actually help
lessen the burden of our planet and it somewhat fits with the Cradle-to-cradle concept
http://www.queensearthcentre.org/educational-library/book-of-the-month
In his chapter on industrial design (written in 1987), historian John Heskett claims that the
methods of mass production introduced by Henry Ford in the U.S. involved new concepts of
the standardization and integration of the production line that were adopted across the
world. With Ford’s method, work could be completed by relatively unskilled workers; it was
more efficient and with this method, products were made more quickly and cheaply than
previously possible. What were some of the social consequences of For
Without a Doubt Henry Ford was only of the genius minds of his century and the production
line not only put a bunch of people without jobs into work but also created a faster and
cheaper way of mass production. Henry took advantage of the industrial revolution and really
put a kick starter onto the revolution of the United States. With all of his highly interesting
success, Henry's production line seriously impacted a group of people. That group is the
skilled workers, those who seriously took time and hone their craft. By selling things at a
cheaper and faster rate, people cared less and less about quality and since the price tag is only
made possible by mass production, those skilled workers and those who have the ability to
create an item from nothing lose business and money. Mass production still exist today in the
world and I know because in China where I come from there is lot of factories, but one thing I
have to say. Mass production, the process of manufacturing in assembly lines will no longer
impact us as much as it did, reason being is that people are now starting to have money, and
with the money people seek after quality. Unlike how business was put out of work during the
time period where the money lower class and middle class cannot buy nice things, now middle
class people can afford to lavish on quality. So the changes won't affect us too much in the
future, unless they have machine do the human job.

Typically, we do not think of hats as elements of mass media or social media. However,
the two hats (red and pink) discussed in the articles certainly have taken on that role.
Why are the two hats (red and pink) mentioned in the articles vehicles of communication
design? What meanings do each of the two hats carry? In terms of communication design,
how are they similar? And how are they different from one another?
Hats has changed through the generations and it is super cool that it is something that has
follow human history for such a long time. Like the clothing that we wear hats has changed and
evolved and it really did change because we are looking the use of it as a different way. For
example, before people in china, farmers wear hats to cover their eye and protect their skin
from the sun, keep in mind that it was lot hotter in China before so these farmers are using
bamboo to make protection and shade keep them cooler from the heat. The emperor will have a
crown to show that he is a higher entity, he doesn't have to work it is a symbol of power. Now,
in society hat is just a fashion statement, I look cooler when I wear hat, but I mostly wear it
because I am too lazy to do my hair.

Chapter in Media/Society and TED Talk Photos that Changed the World
Where would you place the images shown in Photos That Changed the World into
Croteau and Hoynes' diagram entitled “Model of Media and the Social World”?
Identify a mass media photograph taken in your own lifetime that has served as an icon
of an event. (Feel free to add an attachment.) What roles does this photo play in the
communication of the event?
I would post those image in the media message section, the reason being is I can relate, the
picture of Mao Zhe Dong is the icon that served me throughout my life. He is the first
"President" of China and so my family loves him. They will put his picture next to the picture
of my dead grandparents and tell me to become great man like he was. I did not really like
him that much but that photo played a huge roll in communicating different invents in my
life. When my friend come my house they will ask, "You related to Mao? That is so cool!"
And I jokingly say yes but now I look back the idea that they do not realize the Mass media
provided photograph shows me that the generation of Chinese kid do not very care for Mao
Zhe dong. Under this definitions, there is no media that is not communicating an event. Mao
Has changed the lives of every single Chinese, in good and bad ways so it is a memory that
stay with me since child hood because it feels like he is in my household.

The editors state that “diverse participation in the design process, from both professionals and
public citizens alike, yields more equitable results.” This makes sense, but typically has not
been the case. Nonetheless, many marginalized groups have impacted design in ways that have
changed our visual and physical worlds as well as our systems, policies, and institutions. For
example, in the 1960s, disability rights advocates designed media events to raise awareness
about barriers in the physical environment. They persisted with their efforts for decades, and,
finally, in 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act became law. It mandated accessibility in
public accommodations such as restaurants and stores, public transportation, communication,
and other areas of public life. This dramatically changed our physical environment (from curb
cuts to ramps to automatic doors) and the results made public life more equitable.
I think the development of unaltered propertied schooling system and educational benefits is
the real diversity in design. Think about it, what is Ivy league why is it so much harder to get
into? The design of the school? No, the Students they have inside that school? No. society
wants us to think if we work really hard and pay a lot of money to go to these top school they
will be good later in life. In fact, that is not true People from public schools can work just as
hard and thrive just as much but it is the society that puts us away from diversity and force us
into the design of their school system. The funds that the school receive per student, this is all
a business and the economics behind schools are very secretive. I think that the design of the
school in my country is one of the worse, you can go in the back door no matter how bad your grade is as long as your parent will pay
the money for ithttp://www.bokus.com/bok/9781138023161/diversity-and-design/
The author opened her chapter with the example of Ying Zheng, the ruler of the Qin empire,
one of the most powerful and enduring empires I the history of China. She explained how
design innovation contributed to Ying Zheng’s success. For example, in the development of
weaponry, he resolved many problems by standardizing parts, and this single innovation gave
his armies great advantage over other armies.
I think design is something that people put twist on. For example, long time ago people cook
using fire that they learned how to make by accident, this fire later becomes a design and is
used in our daily lives to allow us to cook more easy and for us to access fire easier. Can you
imagine if you want to make a steak and you have to ignite fire with two rocks? That would
be very hard!
Design evolves with people because when people evolve their needs and thoughts also evolve
and they change with the passing time as well. Food use to be something people put in their
stomach to satisfy their hunger and give energy to work daily. Now it is similar but more
design its more unique. You can buy a burger for 1 $ at McDonald, that 1 $ burger is already a
product of countless design trails the wrapper the ingredients everything is carefully design
for the company to be able to sell it at that price. Now you can buy a burger for 100 dollars
how much money does it cost to actually build that burger? Design is something that is fraud
and it explains that in hello world.
One of my friend also said something about the World wide web, and I think that although it is good, it’s really a trap because with it,
we no longer have privacy... I don't know let me know what you think about that.

Should Wiseman have been allowed to film the residents of Bridgewater Massachusetts
Correctional Facility? Why or why not? How might this film be of value to designers
(communication designers, product, designers, architects, interior designers, planners,
landscape designers, systems designers, and/or social designers)? In other words, what might
they gain from this film that they could use in their work?
Inspiration can be found in many things, sometimes I look at my cereal box and think what if this
box was another shape? What if all box were circle instead? Design and product design is a big
part of world we live in today so I think it is safe to say that as a social designer or designer of any
type it is worth value to see this film and the value given by this film. First, I do not think it is
okay to film the Massachusetts correctional facility but it is also not good to film correctional
facility in general because I think the world is not ready to see what actually happen. Now that is
revealed we can see the benefits of that and we will be able to play around what we know. I think
that we are not see the good part of the facility but only the bad and that is a big problem
considering we do not design things to make people happy. But we do to make things either
cheaper or cooler.

How would this change your opinion about the construction of the group home in your
neighborhood?
The residents in your neighborhood voted (14-3) to reject the town of Amherst’s proposal to
build a group home in the neighborhood. Town officials agreed that the home would not be built
in your neighborhood if you and your neighbors could develop a workable alternative.
What are some possible solutions that would allow the residents of the home to be provided with
“the same basic human rights as the rest of the population”?
First off I reject this with everything in my blood, but it depends on time and compensation.
Why? is that even a question? The real question is why not. The basic rights of purchasing a
home is to live happy and comfortably, but what comfort do you get when people are being loud
and not being right? Who do I complain too? They are mentally challenged and are exhibiting
behaviors not suitable for me and my family. Some alternatives are for them to build a walled
institute. If they are close but are secured from doing harm, then I am not opposed to that.
However, if they are being loud and causing trouble than there is no solution for that. I would
like to ask, if you were to get 2000$ every month from government to compensate for that will
you let them? I personally won't unless we are saying money like 10,000$ because I think good
sleep is worth that much.

Identify a place of worship with which you are somewhat familiar. (If you are not
familiar with any places of worship, do a bit of research on one in your own city or
town.) Show a photograph of this religious structure. (You may use photographs from
the web.) What roles has this place served in the development of your city/town? How
has it influenced the design of the area around it? How has its role changed over time?
What roles could this place of worship play in the future development of your
city/town?
Although this place is not my home town, it is a city that I visit very often and I come
here so much because we have a very good train system from my city to Beijing. This
building is known by every single Chinese, every single Chinese people know this
building. You are in your mom's stomach and you still know this building. The Tian
An Men, serve as icon for most Chinese people and it is the structure that generates
lots of revenue for its design and history. It affects the people around it because it
makes them feel very proud to be Chinese and everything I see about this structure
make me very happy to be born in my country. Without a doubt this structure has
already served a religious purpose because it is a structure that gathers all culture,
there is no barrier here and I love that. There is so much freedom here that you can
even get scammed right at this Tian An men by people!

At the beginning of this course, we discussed the idea that we are all designers
regardless of our profession or field of study. We’ve asked some big questions along the
way, and the conclusion section of our textbook raises additional issues that require
input from people who might not consider themselves to be part of the formalized
design professions.
Think about your own major and/or future profession. What is the biggest challenge,
problem, or question that your field needs to tackle right now? What do you plan to do
to address this challenge, problem, or question either as part of your studies or
professional life?
This is no fair professor! Why did you put me in a group full of people that will do big
things, while I am just an Economic major trying to make money later by working in office
or bank and living comfortably off my monthly pay? I do not think there is a problem in this
field that is why I chose it and I think that it is a field where as long as there is people, then
the field will not go away. So in 20 years when population multiply 10X my job will get
10X better. Think about Television and how it got taken by Internet, if one problem I find is
how to prevent economic majors to be taken over by another major. I plan on being a fair
person, my major is filled with people who are not going to treat people honestly so I want
to be someone old people can depend on and rely on. IF that count as a good thing from me?

ARC-211:American Diversity and Design:Zhuorong Zhang

  • 1. University At Buffalo- State University of New York ARC-211 AMERICAN DIVERSITY AND DESIGN- SPRING 2017 Online Discussion Questions Zhuorong Zhang http://www.china.org.cn/top10/2013- 11/18/content_30606499_7.htm
  • 2. My name is Zhuorong Zhang, my American name is Leon and I am a Economics major student. I take this class with one of my good friend because he say that it is a fun class to take. This class has lot of things that make me excited for this new world of construction and it is good that people are into the topic. This class open up a new world of me and though I was never interested in this, but when I learn about Ford and Thomas Jefferson and how they evolve the world with architecture I was amaze and that is what I want to portray in this.
  • 3. Our 2017 Design-A-Baby Survey Yielded the Following characteristics as indicated by a majority of you: Currently, we have the technology for you to choose many of the survey characteristics in your future child, and this ability to choose poses some ethical questions. Of course, we all want the best for our own child. However, as we move into a more collective situation, we need to consider how the consequences of majority choices for children might change who we are as a species. In the film trailer FIXED, you were introduced to the dilemma of living in a culture in which the “science-fiction of human enhancement” has become almost a way of life, from prenatal genetic screening to bionic body parts. In the video, “A Man with Three Ears” you are introduced to an artist who is using current technology to move humans beyond their current abilities. Last week, Juan Enriquez asked us if it is ethical to evolve the human body. All of these videos suggest that the concept of disability ‘as we know it’ could cease to exist in the future. What lessons do you think we should learn from history when thinking about emerging enhancement technologies and reproductive technologies? What are some of the possible consequences (both positive and negative) of being able to design our bodies and the bodies of our children? What ethical quandaries do these technologies pose? It is not a surprise why genetic modification on human is illegal and it should be because there is lot of ethical issue and problem when we talk about changing gene and stuff to make perfect people and it is not right for us to use technology like that. I do think that we have done test on animal and mostly fail because animal die in like a day or two days. So we should learn from history and not do that. There is good thing about this, if you kid is going grow up with cancer and you can prevent that it is good! But it is not ethical and not good if you just want him/her to have nice big eyes and skinny bones. There is one thing that people should never cross and that is how we are made and how we are born but it is okay if it is use to give our child a healthier life. http://www.inhabitots.com/the-designer-baby-debate-should-we-be-allowed-to-genetically- engineer-babies-in-the-usa/
  • 4. The two most frequently mentioned models of disability are the ‘social’ and the ‘medical’ models. The medical model of disability views disability as a medical ‘problem’ that belongs to the disabled individual. The social model of disability, in contrast, draws on the idea that it is society that disables people, through designing everything to meet the needs of the majority of people who are not disabled. There is a recognition within the social model that there is a great deal that society can do to reduce, and ultimately remove, some of these disabling barriers, and that this task is the responsibility of society, rather than the disabled person. Select one of the seven universal design principles, and post photographs that show both a positive and a negative example of the principle. Then address the following question: How do your examples empower or disempower various people? Describe the specific features of the positive example and the specific features of the negative example. Discuss ways that the positive example could be even further improved. The seven design principle I will be choosing for this topic is something that is use every day in all part of the world and it is invented for people to be able to climb with easier time. Everyone know what a stair is it is a design to help people save space by building higher and let you get to second floor. Everyone know stair so I do not post picture but it is problem when you have to put in effort to get up the stair and walk step so there is a low physical effort principal that I am choosing. This is escalator it helps people use very little effort to climb up or down. It has advantage because if thing is heavy you can put on escalator it helps old people and young children who have things to carry and have trouble walking stair. A negative is that it is often time not use for that it is make people very lazy and that is not a good thing so we have to improve this so that people won’t get too lazy and end up gaining weight. http://1000awesomethings.com/2013/01/25/845-good-escalator-etiquette-3/
  • 5. Thread 2: Response to Enriquez TED Talk: “What Will Humans Look Like in 100 Years?” For this question, we will focus on Juan Enriquez’ Life Two civilization, which alters fundamental aspects of the body. We are living longer than ever before in human history. Enriquez argues that, because of advances in bio-medical technology, the possibility of living to 120 years of age and beyond is quite possible for many of us in this D+D class. Assuming that his assertion is accurate, how do you think extended life spans will change our societies and built environments? What new issues might designers face because of extended life spans? I think with the advancement in science and medicine people will for sure live much longer, but that is if they have the means to. Even in today, not everyone can afford to get a body check up every month and some people don't even go to the doctors for years. Not all people can afford the medical technologies and I am sure the cost of living is very high. As a designer I will have to be able to put cost into the spectrum and say that to give elderly a place to live is the main goal. Lot of old people today are left by their Children/Grand Children to fend for themselves because with the increase cost of everything it is impossible to take care of family while looking after the old. Therefore, I think the largest issue is over population, it is even a problem today where old people live longer and at same time baby being born. We will need to build apartments 20X taller and 50% more efficient in spacing to solve that problem. Regent park is the best example that you need an environment that is lively to thrive. • 6. Hidden Ways Author Steven Flusty categorized five types of disciplinary architecture that perpetuate what he calls urban spatial injustice: 1) stealthy, 2) slippery, 3) crusty, 4) prickly, and 5) jittery. Go out into the city of Buffalo, and find/photograph two examples from the list of five. Identify what type of space you’ve photographed and why it might discriminate against a specific population. Identify the location where you took the photograph, and make certain that you are in at least one of the two photographs. When you think about the city of Buffalo, you think about the Niagara Falls. From the List I think the Rail that protect people from falling is a good architecture because it serves a purpose and it save many people lives every day and get no recognition at all so it is something I think photographed terrifically. This place is Stealthy for that reason I gave; it secretly protects people. Also it is also very slippery because everyone can come here it is free, but it is funny because such a free place still drives lot of revenue. I think this place discriminates against a specific group of people and that is Canadians because when I ask American they think that American side is best and Canadian is bad. Since the falls is visible to all it is easily one of the most intrusive hidden ways. http://smallhousedecor.com/furniture/ssst-amazing-secret-passage-home/
  • 7. People Like Us After almost two decades of public assistance, Tammy Crabtree took herself and her family off the welfare rolls. But her job cleaning bathrooms at a local Burger King barely paid the bills. Crabtree wanted to do better and hopes to go to college and become a teacher. Imagine this scenario. You are a designer who works at the well-known firm, iPD (Integrated Planning and Design). You work on a team with planners, urban designers, policy designers, architects, and social designers. You have been tasked to develop/design a way for Tammy Crabtree and her family (and others with situations similar to Tammy’s) to move themselves out of poverty. What will your team to do to help Tammy and her family achieve their goals? What approach will your team take to address this difficult problem? Poverty is something majority of the world deal with lot of country in the world live in poverty and we are lucky to not be a part of that. I think it is important for people to help those in need like Tammy Crabtree and her family. This is a hard discussion because there really is not a lot of information about Tammy and her status and current situation because you know we do not know her wages and her income and what she need to use to pay bill like electric and gas bill. Let us be realistic, it is impossible to get them out of poverty unless you have money to give them but they will use up all the money before they get out of poverty because they not smart with the money. It is not possible to just give them cash and a job is meaningless if they cannot perform and no education to do so. So my team and I will first build small houses inside a community that has a school in center and these small house will have all things included free. They will have one central bathroom for girl and boy very big and private shower facility. They will have time card and when you shower you swipe and every day you get one swipe per card these swipe provide 6 minutes to shower to keep water bill down. Also people take advantage of the system so even when they wash hand they have a 1-minute limit. There will be an electric generating room, if they want electricity for the night they must swipe card and ride the stationary bicycle to charge energy, this way they can exercise and get electricity. The rest of time is focus in school work giving them education to go out and get themselves out of poverty. https://thepauseblog.wordpress.com/
  • 8. Last year, North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory signed into law a bill that repealed local LGBT anti-discrimination laws, and required people to use the bathroom that corresponded with the biological gender written on their birth certificates. This prompted massive backlash. McCrory stated, “You know, we all have to make adjustments in life. Should people be required to use the bathroom that corresponds with the biological gender written on their birth certificate? State why AND state why not. In other words, to receive full credit for this question, you need to present an argument for both sides of the issue. As a designer, how would you solve this gender dilemma The bill that repeals the anti-discrimination law is a big flaw to the current law system that keep thing in check. In my opinion it is big problem when people are going out of their way to make others feel bad. I believe very strongly that everyone should have the rights to do things that is within the law code. For example, the North Carolina government think that it is okay to ban anti-discrimination law in public bathrooms in order to make others that complain feel better. See the problem? There really not a problem, some people are born into another body one they do not like, you cannot force a girl to go to girl bathroom if she feels like a dude. I can see why the state would want people to use bathroom stated with gender on their birth certificate because that way it will just stop problem in general, they think hurting a few feelings is worth the safety of the people and they are not wrong because it is true people are using this as an opportunity to do bad and that many people are abused too. But as a designer I think we should just make a gender neutral bathroom where everyone gets a small room and the only space share is the washing place. So bunch of small room for stalls and one central area to wash and dry hand to keep cost down. https://www.cartoonstock.com/cartoonview.asp?catref=dren1809
  • 9. In their chapter “Communicating Gender,” Maya Ganesh and Gabi Sublime discuss two primary visual advocacy approaches: 1) get the idea, and 2) stories in data. Find a new example of either of the two visual advocacy approaches to gender issues, and post it in this thread First, identify the approach. Then explain how the designer uses the approach to communicate a gender issue. Is the approach effective in this example? Why or why not? How could this graphic be improved? Gender issue has always been very serious with me, my dad a great man he did a lot for me and my mom when we were poor he would come home every day tired and sad that he could not do more for us. Every now and then he would have argument with my mom and I can feel her sadness yet she did not argue back or when he hit her she will not fight back. After my dad tried very hard he finally became successful. When he came back with the check that change out life around, he cried, he was very sad. He held my mom and cried so much that I can barely understand what he is saying but thinking back now I know loud and clear that he is apologizing. He said I'm sorry for stealing your future by burdening you with a child, I’m sorry for trapping you at home and not letting you chase your dream, I'm sorry I yelled and abuse you because of my temper. At that time, I began to realize that he has respect for my mother and from then on I have never seen him angry at her and never once did he raise his voice at her. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/330522060124844596/
  • 10. Recent controversies about sports branding focus on ethnicity. The Washington Redskins team is just one example of the larger controversy, but it receives the most public attention due to the name itself being defined as derogatory or insulting in modern dictionaries, and the prominence of the team representing the nation’s capital. Recent controversies about sports branding focus on ethnicity. The Washington Redskins team is just one example of the larger controversy, but it receives the most public attention due to the name itself being defined as derogatory or insulting in modern dictionaries, and the prominence of the team representing the nation’s capital. Should sports team branding designers use ethnic references (Fighting Irish, Boston Celtics, Atlanta Braves, etc.)? Why? Why not? What are some of the complexities of this issue? could sports team branding designers use ethnic references (Fighting Irish, Boston Celtics, Atlanta Braves, etc.)? Why? Why not? What are some of the complexities of this issue? I think that the Washington redskins as a team name is not that bad. The United State capitol is Washington and when you think that the country is built on the native American than the name is that not bad at all. I know what the media want and it is to cause a problem that should not be problem. The question is, should sports team branding designers use ethnic references? Well the answer is simple, if it generates revenue than yes they very well should. It is not good and not right, but that is not going to put food on table so if that is right with their hearts and they are doing that to put food on table we cannot judge. I think that the issues are very complex because it affects different people in different way thus we cannot argue that unless people change we will not be able to stop them from branding. http://cstv.collegesports.com/mt5.2/mt-search.cgi?IncludeBlogs=96&tag=GW%20Men%27s%20Basketball&limit=20
  • 11. Equity x Design Critique either the MLK Memorial or the National Museum of African American History and Culture using equity design’s core beliefs and/or design principles. (Use the beliefs or principles that are most relevant to your critique rather than all of them The National Museum of African American art to me is like work of art that show the history and work put in by African Americans in the United States. During that period of time, equal right movement and many other movements occur and people want to have the same equality and so when the museum was proposing lot of people do not like idea of museum make just for black people and there is lot of problems with the core belief and the principle design of this museum explain in the equity design’s motives. when we look at the structure we think that it is a historical piece it is use to memory lot of people who work hard and fought hard for equal right in America so that is main motive but I think many people want to forgot and not remember slave built this country and so this structure has a sensitivity that deprives people of inequality and also give people values. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/530650768566296936/
  • 12. The abolitionist poster, the Brookes, is an iconic image that often is included in exhibits that explore issues of race and power. It was commissioned by Thomas Clarkson in 1788, and the Committee of the Abolition of Slavery used it to inform and shock the public. While some consider the poster as an important component of the abolitionist campaign, it recently “has been strongly criticized by some individuals and groups of African heritage as providing a very limited view of the history of the transatlantic slave trade, resistance and abolition (Hudson 2007).” The lesson here is that how a viewer sees an image is dependent upon his/her social, economic, and cultural position. Keeping this in mind, find another iconic graphic that addresses racial issues and post it for others in your group to view. (Add it to your response by clicking on the picture in the tools section. The Image I chose is Martin Luther king Junior, this picture is super important to me because it is the most important part of American history. In this photo King is giving his very important I have a dream speech it is his most important part of his life and so i think when he looks at this image he will be more proud than us that look at it. It is because he works so hard to fight for this moment so when he looks at the image he is going to have different meaning than us and so the cultural background and issues when he looks the photo means his life. That is why I think that it is possible for the difference of intergeneration. I am Chinese and so when I look at picture I do not feel the same as let say an African American, but I am sure that when African American see this image they will know him right away, and they will see his vision for a better America http://www.smithsonianmag.com/smithsonian-institution/photos-of-mlk-at-work-the-civil-rights- leader-before-and-after-his-i-have-a-dream-speech-2895303/
  • 13. Imagine that you are part of a urban planning and design firm working with Emily Talen (author of “Design That Enables Diversity”) and Kent Larson (who gave the TED Talk "Brilliant Designs to Fit More People In Every City" The thee of you have been tasked with developing a plan to rebuild Pruitt Igoe in St. Louis. City officials told the three of you that that they want to do it right this time. Identify three strategies for rebuilding Pruitt Igoe in ways that promise to be more successful. What would Talen do? What would Larson do? What would you do? How would your strategies differ from those of the original urban planners/designers of the project? Why would your strategies be more effective? Do you know what we do in China when something like this happen? We ignore it and use the saying Out of Sight out of Mind. That is harsh but it is the only way until we can think about something better! Consider this poor people together, building a home for all of them would be impossible yet having them all crammed into an apartment is less than ideal that is why the Pruit Igoe failed and had to be demolished because people were doing bad things to each other stealing, violence, and rape. This is not unthinkable when you consider who lives in those complex, evil born new evil. I think that what would help the rebuilding of Pruitt Igoe is to start off with a new style of building, Like Talen would agree diversity will increase production, production as in more creativity more drive and more will to do work. I agree with Talen and thus If we are going to spend money to construct and plan successfully, an apartment style giant will be downright unacceptable. While I also agree that "New" Technology and innovation is important so three strategies I would use is a complete mix of three individual’s ideas. First I would add a central pound inside a more military style complex, because there is a large population we need them to be surrounded by nature like riverside because that way even if there is financial crisis, the large body of waters can provide fun and food. I will also, have work, public work that people gather to do, this will spread awareness whether it is littering about throwing garbage to garbage can or to like be more smart about what you do. I will also put a public bus stop so that it can take them to locations that are design for cheap shopping providing more options other than before. This will deter them from luxury that they do not need and will also provide necessities. I believe diversity is a big issue so make sure you do not label in any form. http://www.tastespotting.com/detail/220/Newton-Milk-and-Sugar-for-Coffee-in-One
  • 14. John Levy’s article, “An Overview: The Need for Planning,” discussed ways in which planning can determine the characteristics of a place. For example, some smaller towns restrict the heights of buildings to maintain a certain scale. How did planning define the character of the place in which you grew up? I grow up in Guangzhou province of China, and that only define my ethnicity. The planning of Guangzhou is every easily described as a mess, When I was young everything really was a mess because people were poor and thus created houses with anything and really did not have much of a building plan. As I grow up I see things change, I see taller and taller towers being built and bigger malls, stadiums, parking lots and apartments going into the sky. I think that the character is change, in fact China is change. When I looked into the sky as a kid, I could see clouds and stars, now I see towers with lights and fog in the sky. The planning soon changes to a more river based design because a lot of the most expensive and most beautiful buildings are near the river and it is like a dream when you watch it from the boat that this is actually such a beautiful place. Guangzhou has a lot of flaws because the difference in wealth is too big and because of that it sometimes causes an issue. Think about a fish tank top half is beautiful water with fishes swimming, the under half is rocks and snails crawling. That is the planning of Guangzhou, they make the water more and more beautiful while neglecting and not caring for the rocks and hopes that the snails will clean it up themselves. That is less than colorful but that really is the characters that define the place I grew up. https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&ved=0ahUKEwiGtr3Rrc3TAhWGshQKHf_TDncQjxwI Aw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cityoforlando.net%2Fcity-planning%2Fhistoric- preservation%2F&psig=AFQjCNE9bRxTXQvxkneuhpRzQDtFEkdItg&ust=1493682098008002
  • 15. COLLAPSE Andrew Ballantyne and Peter Zumthor present ideas about architecture that seem to value the sensorial and material elements of life. How are Ballantyne’s and Zumthor’s viewpoints on architecture alike? More importantly, how do they differ? Architecture is a fancy way to say building buildings that look like they were buildings built well when compared to other buildings. Please do not misunderstand me I think that that is beautiful and it is good that people like architecture so much so that they study it in lot of way like Andrew Ballantyne and Peter Zumthor who are expert in the field of Architectural buildings. Both have that in common and they think the same with the buildings meaning they think that the best form of flattery is how each people think about the building, like the building has to mean a lot to its people and it must make them feel good. The Paris Eiffel tower and the falling tower of Pisa, both of these structure means more to its people and that is the coolest thing. They also have very different idea on the ways buildings should be built, and even though they think that both buildings have more meaning than to be use to keep people warm they think that the field of architecture is something out of opinion. Ballantyne enjoys the old buildings, structures and architecture style of ancient times like Rome and Greek, in his quote, “the masterful, correct, and magnificent play of volumes brought together in light.” this quote shows his love for quality style of building. Unlike Ballantyne who see the beauty of houses and structures without life as a masterpiece, Zumthor wanted to focus on the current state of building, zumthor thinks that buildings that are traditional is not styling enough and is boring. He likes modern buildings and it is something that makes the two different. This is exemplified when both wants to enhance imagination https://www.pinterest.com/francesca0160/paper/
  • 16. . Your readings and viewings this week present different ways of thinking about architecture. Mies Van der Rohe describes architecture as “The will of the epoch translated into space.” Andrew Ballantyne describes architecture as the background for life. Jeanne Gang describes it as the act of building relationships. This is the easiest question ever given! I love to talk about buildings and with this week’s readings and material I say that my two favorite is the Capital building of Virginia Design by Thomas Jefferson and Ford and Khans assembly line! I think that it is one of the best sensible building of his time because of how Thomas Jefferson kind build the building even if he is not there! Thomas Jefferson is a great example of a self-taught architects that only sought after perfection in his structures, that is why when he came back from France and he saw what the slaves and elite constructors create he become super mad and even angry. He asks for change as soon as possible, when he got back and saw no steps he was furious but you can only ask for so much when you are an ocean away from American. The technology of the time was very slow so translating his idea to reality was lot of times harder than it is now especially a perfectionist like Jefferson. That was the difficulty and communication is the second most difficult problem, compare to my second choice which is Henry Ford’s amazing assembly line. That pose a lot of threat since it has never been done but it is impressive because the design is so unique and it reflects the time perfectly! Think industrial revolution. assembly line it is hand and hand! The assembly line reflects the culture since now many people no skill can work during that period of boom and even the challenge that happen before with slow build process is now fix and improve. https://www.loc.gov/visit/maps-and-floor-plans/jefferson-building-first-floor/

How does this product resist or disregard the concept? Provide an example of any product that embraces Cradle-to-Cradle design Cradle to cradle design concept developed by architect William McDonough and Chemist Micheal Braungart, is a concept that will save the world from its destruction. People don't understand that being wasteful is only causing harm and is not doing good, this idea of global warming being fake is another reason why the design concept is not played out more. One more thing everyone know that one percent of the world's population owns 99% of the world money, so if they do not understand, no they do not care than our design concept will be useless. I think the IDEA gallery has one of the worst selection of inventions simply because most of these items are not recyclable. The Vive VR glasses for one is made with plastic, and those materials that are put into the Vive are not re-useable nor does it call for upgrades. So that is why it does not apply to the concept however I know of is apple iPhone. Since they push out new device every year some people that buy it every year will now recycle their old phones. Apple than will take the phone in and reuse parts. "http://abcnews.go.com/Business/recycled-iphones-apple- products/story?id=37872881" This is actually important because it will actually help lessen the burden of our planet and it somewhat fits with the Cradle-to-cradle concept

In his chapter on industrial design (written in 1987), historian John Heskett claims that the methods of mass production introduced by Henry Ford in the U.S. involved new concepts of the standardization and integration of the production line that were adopted across the world. With Ford’s method, work could be completed by relatively unskilled workers; it was more efficient and with this method, products were made more quickly and cheaply than previously possible. What were some of the social consequences of For Without a Doubt Henry Ford was only of the genius minds of his century and the production line not only put a bunch of people without jobs into work but also created a faster and cheaper way of mass production. Henry took advantage of the industrial revolution and really put a kick starter onto the revolution of the United States. With all of his highly interesting success, Henry's production line seriously impacted a group of people. That group is the skilled workers, those who seriously took time and hone their craft. By selling things at a cheaper and faster rate, people cared less and less about quality and since the price tag is only made possible by mass production, those skilled workers and those who have the ability to create an item from nothing lose business and money. Mass production still exist today in the world and I know because in China where I come from there is lot of factories, but one thing I have to say. Mass production, the process of manufacturing in assembly lines will no longer impact us as much as it did, reason being is that people are now starting to have money, and with the money people seek after quality. Unlike how business was put out of work during the time period where the money lower class and middle class cannot buy nice things, now middle class people can afford to lavish on quality. So the changes won't affect us too much in the future, unless they have machine do the human job.

However, the two hats (red and pink) discussed in the articles certainly have taken on that role. Why are the two hats (red and pink) mentioned in the articles vehicles of communication design? What meanings do each of the two hats carry? In terms of communication design, how are they similar? And how are they different from one another? Hats has changed through the generations and it is super cool that it is something that has follow human history for such a long time. Like the clothing that we wear hats has changed and evolved and it really did change because we are looking the use of it as a different way. For example, before people in china, farmers wear hats to cover their eye and protect their skin from the sun, keep in mind that it was lot hotter in China before so these farmers are using bamboo to make protection and shade keep them cooler from the heat. The emperor will have a crown to show that he is a higher entity, he doesn't have to work it is a symbol of power. Now, in society hat is just a fashion statement, I look cooler when I wear hat, but I mostly wear it because I am too lazy to do my hair. http://vesselnews.io/sjw-freaks-student-wearing-hateful-pro-trump-hat-stolen/

Chapter in Media/Society and TED Talk Photos that Changed the World Where would you place the images shown in Photos That Changed the World into Croteau and Hoynes' diagram entitled “Model of Media and the Social World”? Identify a mass media photograph taken in your own lifetime that has served as an icon of an event. (Feel free to add an attachment.) What roles does this photo play in the communication of the event? I would post those image in the media message section, the reason being is I can relate, the picture of Mao Zhe Dong is the icon that served me throughout my life. He is the first "President" of China and so my family loves him. They will put his picture next to the picture of my dead grandparents and tell me to become great man like he was. I did not really like him that much but that photo played a huge roll in communicating different invents in my life. When my friend come my house they will ask, "You related to Mao? That is so cool!" And I jokingly say yes but now I look back the idea that they do not realize the Mass media provided photograph shows me that the generation of Chinese kid do not very care for Mao Zhe dong. Under this definitions, there is no media that is not communicating an event. Mao Has changed the lives of every single Chinese, in good and bad ways so it is a memory that stay with me since child hood because it feels like he is in my household. https://www.lingholic.com/how-to-learn-languages-through-ted-talks/
  • 22. The editors state that “diverse participation in the design process, from both professionals and public citizens alike, yields more equitable results.” This makes sense, but typically has not been the case. Nonetheless, many marginalized groups have impacted design in ways that have changed our visual and physical worlds as well as our systems, policies, and institutions. For example, in the 1960s, disability rights advocates designed media events to raise awareness about barriers in the physical environment. They persisted with their efforts for decades, and, finally, in 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act became law. It mandated accessibility in public accommodations such as restaurants and stores, public transportation, communication, and other areas of public life. This dramatically changed our physical environment (from curb cuts to ramps to automatic doors) and the results made public life more equitable. I think the development of unaltered propertied schooling system and educational benefits is the real diversity in design. Think about it, what is Ivy league why is it so much harder to get into? The design of the school? No, the Students they have inside that school? No. society wants us to think if we work really hard and pay a lot of money to go to these top school they will be good later in life. In fact, that is not true People from public schools can work just as hard and thrive just as much but it is the society that puts us away from diversity and force us into the design of their school system. The funds that the school receive per student, this is all a business and the economics behind schools are very secretive. I think that the design of the school in my country is one of the worse, you can go in the back door no matter how bad your grade is as long as your parent will pay the money for ithttp://www.bokus.com/bok/9781138023161/diversity-and-design/

She explained how design innovation contributed to Ying Zheng’s success. For example, in the development of weaponry, he resolved many problems by standardizing parts, and this single innovation gave his armies great advantage over other armies. I think design is something that people put twist on. For example, long time ago people cook using fire that they learned how to make by accident, this fire later becomes a design and is used in our daily lives to allow us to cook more easy and for us to access fire easier. Can you imagine if you want to make a steak and you have to ignite fire with two rocks? That would be very hard! Design evolves with people because when people evolve their needs and thoughts also evolve and they change with the passing time as well. Food use to be something people put in their stomach to satisfy their hunger and give energy to work daily. Now it is similar but more design its more unique. You can buy a burger for 1 $ at McDonald, that 1 $ burger is already a product of countless design trails the wrapper the ingredients everything is carefully design for the company to be able to sell it at that price. Now you can buy a burger for 100 dollars how much money does it cost to actually build that burger? Design is something that is fraud and it explains that in hello world. One of my friend also said something about the World wide web, and I think that although it is good, it’s really a trap because with it, we no longer have privacy... I don't know let me know what you think about that. https://hackdesign.org/lessons/1

How might this film be of value to designers (communication designers, product, designers, architects, interior designers, planners, landscape designers, systems designers, and/or social designers)? In other words, what might they gain from this film that they could use in their work? Inspiration can be found in many things, sometimes I look at my cereal box and think what if this box was another shape? What if all box were circle instead? Design and product design is a big part of world we live in today so I think it is safe to say that as a social designer or designer of any type it is worth value to see this film and the value given by this film. First, I do not think it is okay to film the Massachusetts correctional facility but it is also not good to film correctional facility in general because I think the world is not ready to see what actually happen. Now that is revealed we can see the benefits of that and we will be able to play around what we know. I think that we are not see the good part of the facility but only the bad and that is a big problem considering we do not design things to make people happy. But we do to make things either cheaper or cooler. http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/titicut-follies-1968
  • 25. How would this change your opinion about the construction of the group home in your neighborhood? The residents in your neighborhood voted (14-3) to reject the town of Amherst’s proposal to build a group home in the neighborhood. Town officials agreed that the home would not be built in your neighborhood if you and your neighbors could develop a workable alternative. What are some possible solutions that would allow the residents of the home to be provided with “the same basic human rights as the rest of the population”? First off I reject this with everything in my blood, but it depends on time and compensation. Why? is that even a question? The real question is why not. The basic rights of purchasing a home is to live happy and comfortably, but what comfort do you get when people are being loud and not being right? Who do I complain too? They are mentally challenged and are exhibiting behaviors not suitable for me and my family. Some alternatives are for them to build a walled institute. If they are close but are secured from doing harm, then I am not opposed to that. However, if they are being loud and causing trouble than there is no solution for that. I would like to ask, if you were to get 2000$ every month from government to compensate for that will you let them? I personally won't unless we are saying money like 10,000$ because I think good sleep is worth that much. http://www.mascontext.com/issues/8-public-winter-10/what-is-your-favorite-public-space/
  • 26. Identify a place of worship with which you are somewhat familiar. (If you are not familiar with any places of worship, do a bit of research on one in your own city or town.) Show a photograph of this religious structure. (You may use photographs from the web.) What roles has this place served in the development of your city/town? How has it influenced the design of the area around it? How has its role changed over time? What roles could this place of worship play in the future development of your city/town? Although this place is not my home town, it is a city that I visit very often and I come here so much because we have a very good train system from my city to Beijing. This building is known by every single Chinese, every single Chinese people know this building. You are in your mom's stomach and you still know this building. The Tian An Men, serve as icon for most Chinese people and it is the structure that generates lots of revenue for its design and history. It affects the people around it because it makes them feel very proud to be Chinese and everything I see about this structure make me very happy to be born in my country. Without a doubt this structure has already served a religious purpose because it is a structure that gathers all culture, there is no barrier here and I love that. There is so much freedom here that you can even get scammed right at this Tian An men by people! http://www.diffchina.com/blog/?p=20
  • 27. At the beginning of this course, we discussed the idea that we are all designers regardless of our profession or field of study. We’ve asked some big questions along the way, and the conclusion section of our textbook raises additional issues that require input from people who might not consider themselves to be part of the formalized design professions. Think about your own major and/or future profession. What is the biggest challenge, problem, or question that your field needs to tackle right now? What do you plan to do to address this challenge, problem, or question either as part of your studies or professional life? This is no fair professor! Why did you put me in a group full of people that will do big things, while I am just an Economic major trying to make money later by working in office or bank and living comfortably off my monthly pay? I do not think there is a problem in this field that is why I chose it and I think that it is a field where as long as there is people, then the field will not go away. So in 20 years when population multiply 10X my job will get 10X better. Think about Television and how it got taken by Internet, if one problem I find is how to prevent economic majors to be taken over by another major. I plan on being a fair person, my major is filled with people who are not going to treat people honestly so I want to be someone old people can depend on and rely on. IF that count as a good thing from me? http://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20161018000904
