This document discusses the relationship between technology and organizations. It defines technology as the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes. Technology is introduced to organizations to reduce costs, increase productivity and quality, and reduce dependence on skilled labor. However, technology can be viewed either as deskilling work or enriching work by automating routine tasks. The relationship between organizations and information technology is mediated by factors like culture, structure, and management decisions. Technology lowers the costs of information and changes the economics of information for organizations. It can flatten organizations by pushing decision-making lower and reducing the need for managers. Both large and small organizations can gain flexibility through technology to overcome limitations of their size.
