Enter Green Engage… IHG's online sustainability management system that helps hotels to… Raise guest and staff awareness of sustainable development Reduce energy and water consumption Reduce carbon footprint
How does Green Engage work? 2 Hotels input their site data – water, gas, electricity etc. System automatically generates reports and benchmarks to compare performance 1 4 Hotels research ‘green solutions’ and add specific actions to their action plan Finally, system produces reports which allow IHG to review an individual hotel's progress 3

GREEN ENGAGE 1.0 THE FIRST IHG SYSTEM
Green Engage 1.0 was piloted in 2009 Good initial uptake, around 650 hotels Great concept, poor user experience IHG received a lot of negative feedback They carried out usability testing on the system and there were a number of key findings… The beginning: Green Engage 1.0
Once signed up, users didn’t know where to start Navigation wasn’t very intuitive User Interface wasn’t very appealing
Reporting functionality didn't meet user requirements No logical flow/user journey The list goes on…
Back to the drawing board Our core approach focussed heavily on User Experience throughout the project lifecycle. Research and User Engagement 1 Creative Design 2 Rapid Prototyping 3 Usability Testing 4 Development and Rollout 5
Green Engage users are spread all over the globe in a range of different cultural contexts To gain qualitative feedback we carried out face-to-face workshops and telephone interviews We supplemented this qualitative input with quantitative feedback gained from an online survey Research and User Engagement
Sketches > low-fidelity wireframes > final designs Refined these over a course of iterative design meetings Creative Design
We ran a JAD (Joint Application Development) workshop to allow stakeholders and users to influence the detailed requirements of the Green Engage site This was a highly visual process using Axure to prototype suggested functionality as it emerged from the discussions Rapid Prototyping
We used the Axure prototype for usability testing  Two rounds of testing with refinements in between The System Usability Scale (SUS) score improved dramatically with a 35% increase Before Sigma’s involvement 42% of Product Reaction Cards (PRCs) chosen in usability testing were positive; we succeeded in increasing positive PRCs to 82% Usability Testing
We worked as part of the client’s in-house team to develop the application using Java and GWT technologies Our friends at Sigma Ukraine were closely involved Green Engage 2.0 was rolled out to hotels in April 2011 Development and Rollout

IHG has become the first hotel company to receive LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certification for both new and existing hotels So far 1,100 hotels have signed up to the system If all the hotels in the 4,400-strong portfolio adopted the system the estimated total savings for hotel owners could be over $300m (1,872,183,784 SEK) Consider this…

How does Green Engage work? 2 Hotels input their site data – water, gas, electricity etc. System automatically generates reports and benchmarks to compare performance 1 4 Hotels research ‘green solutions’ and add specific actions to their action plan Finally, system produces reports which allow IHG to review an individual hotel's progress 3

  • 9. GREEN ENGAGE 1.0 THE FIRST IHG SYSTEM
  • 10. Green Engage 1.0 was piloted in 2009 Good initial uptake, around 650 hotels Great concept, poor user experience IHG received a lot of negative feedback They carried out usability testing on the system and there were a number of key findings… The beginning: Green Engage 1.0
  • 11. Once signed up, users didn’t know where to start Navigation wasn’t very intuitive User Interface wasn’t very appealing
  • 12. Reporting functionality didn't meet user requirements No logical flow/user journey The list goes on…
  • 13. Back to the drawing board Our core approach focussed heavily on User Experience throughout the project lifecycle. Research and User Engagement 1 Creative Design 2 Rapid Prototyping 3 Usability Testing 4 Development and Rollout 5

Green Engage users are spread all over the globe in a range of different cultural contexts To gain qualitative feedback we carried out face-to-face workshops and telephone interviews We supplemented this qualitative input with quantitative feedback gained from an online survey Research and User Engagement
  • 15. Sketches > low-fidelity wireframes > final designs Refined these over a course of iterative design meetings Creative Design
  • 16. We ran a JAD (Joint Application Development) workshop to allow stakeholders and users to influence the detailed requirements of the Green Engage site This was a highly visual process using Axure to prototype suggested functionality as it emerged from the discussions Rapid Prototyping
  • 17. We used the Axure prototype for usability testing Two rounds of testing with refinements in between The System Usability Scale (SUS) score improved dramatically with a 35% increase Before Sigma’s involvement 42% of Product Reaction Cards (PRCs) chosen in usability testing were positive; we succeeded in increasing positive PRCs to 82% Usability Testing
  • 18. We worked as part of the client’s in-house team to develop the application using Java and GWT technologies Our friends at Sigma Ukraine were closely involved Green Engage 2.0 was rolled out to hotels in April 2011 Development and Rollout
