Logic-Black Spiderman
Lyrics
The lyrics in Logics song “Black Spiderman” is Logics way of trying to establish how he feels
everyone should have equality and his own personal struggles through experiencing racism as he
is bi-racial.
I just wanna be free, Not a slave to the stereotype, All alone in my room in the middle of the
night, I don’t have the words but my stereo might. This is clearly showing how he knows what
people go through as he has been in the same situation and can release his feelings through his
words in song.
I don't wanna be black, I don’t wanna be white, I just wanna be a man today, I don't wanna be a
Christian, Muslim, gay, straight, or bi, see you later, bye. In this line Logic is saying that he doesn’t
want to be classed as a race but just as a man, as a human like everybody else and that people
that are religious or homosexual or bisexual should be treated in the same sense.
Music
Black Spiderman is an example of a fast R&B/Rap song
which Logic is famous for creating these types of
song, which contrasts wit the video as it moves at a
steady pace.
Mise en scene/Genre
In this genre of music which is R&B/Rap, usually the emphasis is focused on gangs, drugs or
violence. However Logic uses none of these stereotypes and focuses solely on equality rather
than being above anyone or more powerful like most rap songs do. The scene in which Black
Spiderman is lit is with no lighting but just filtered through editing and uses normal sunlight as
the artist is constantly moving so cannot have lights on him as he needs to be on the move all the
time. Logic uses minimal props other than a moving stage with an all black cast of choir singers
which contributes the what the song is about being equality for all races and genders with him
being bi-racial and saying that he believes he is equal to these black people as is everyone else in
the world. Logic wears an everyday costume with blue jeans, a black t-shirt, and trainers whereas
his wife wears a running outfit as she is playing a woman going for a jog and his choir singers are
in typical choir costume. Logic usually wears this typical rapping style costume. Logic also uses a
street to walk through as he encounters different types of people, ranging from a jogger and a
civilian walking out of his house to get a paper.
Camerawork
Logic uses a variety of camera shots and angles to create a good
atmosphere and make the watcher feel more involved in the
performance. This is a medium close up of logic .
This is a eye-level shot, which tracks
following them through street as they skip
together.
Editing
Usually in rap videos editing can either be slow paced
suggesting love or sadness, or fast paced suggesting anger
and aggression. In this video the editing is inbetween as it has
slow cuts and fast cuts.
Intertextuality
In this music video Logic is drawing attention towards the
black and white cultures saying that Spiderman should be
black, and how there shouldn’t be racism and that everyone
should be able to do what they want and say what they want
without discriminated by the colour of their skin or gender or
sex
Performance
Some artists use narratives to display their feelings about the
song they have created, Logic however uses performance
throughout the video up until the end where he uses a small
bit of narrative. He dances throughout the video whilst
rapping as well, having interactions with everyday people as
the video goes on. At the end of the video the camera rises
and focuses on two cats that have had their mouths edited to
match the voices of actors that voice them, they talk like
normal black kids discussing that Spiderman should be black
reiterating the whole meaning of Logics song.
Star image/Branding
In the video there is minimal star image or branding. Logic is
performing with normal actors in the video until later on when
they switch out for actual dancers for a sequenced move to
appeal to the people watching the video as many people like
watching dancers in music videos.
Voyeurism
In the video there is only a few moments of voyeurism
throughout the performance. At the beginning when you see
Logics wife going for a jog during the day as a normal person is
an example as people wouldn’t usually be able to see his wife
going for a run so the take pleasure in seeing this as they
wouldn’t usually, also another example is that you see normal
people picking up newspapers from their porch or watering
their plants, which is looking into some people lives and could
potentially take pleasure in seeing this.
Context
Throughout the whole of the music video Logic has been
aiming towards the context of equality. For races, religions,
gender or sexual preference and his lyrics constantly keep up
with the fact that the world isn’t right and that no one is
defined by those things which is why he suggests that
Spiderman should be black, which did actually happen as he
said he votes for glover instead which is a direct link towards
Donald Glover who is a black actor/Music artist who voice acts
a Spiderman cartoon show.
