This document summarizes a study on college student feedback regarding massive open online courses (MOOCs) and flipped classrooms. The study was conducted from 2012-2017 at the University of Virginia. Key findings from student surveys (n=118) were that students value being able to watch course videos and retake online quizzes to gain mastery, but it requires a significant time commitment outside of class. Students preferred the flipped format and found the online component convenient, though clickstream data showed not all students watched every video. The recommendation is for instructors to use online content while recognizing students won't watch it all, and to use in-person class time for activities that can't be done online.
