This document summarizes trends in U.S. study abroad programs and innovative models. It finds that the number of U.S. students studying abroad is growing but most go to Europe. Top priorities are expanding participation, diversity, destinations and connecting learning to careers. Effective programs facilitate experiential learning, collaboration and growth. Models highlighted include international internships, research programs, teaching abroad and social entrepreneurship projects that build job skills like problem solving and cultural fluency. Central Asian universities are encouraged to create strategies for short-term, English-taught programs with scholarships and technical/soft skill development.

One can foresee that many universities will need to focus more time and energy on their approach to technology for student learning, and as a result their digital leadership. Yet technology on its own is not the solution; it is an enabler.
In this session Peter will reflect briefly on his own institution's journey towards technology-enhanced learning and support, one that encompasses a broad array of technological developments, and involved many colleagues and students, the aim of which is the delivery of a high-quality and inclusive student experience for all.

Connecting Students with People who Care(er): Post-Secondary Professionals as...BCcampus

Increasingly students begin their post-secondary experience with a career in mind, and two recent studies (Environics Research Group, 2011; Ho, 2017) suggest that those paths are largely influenced by educators (e.g. Faculty) before a student even considers visiting a career centre. Consequently, these professionals have the inherent capacity to extend their care for students beyond their teaching roles: as Career Influencers, defined by the EdD study as individuals working in a higher education institution who informally provide career-related advice, guidance, and/or counselling to prospective and current students and/or alumni.
This session has two goals. It aims to help attendees recognize their influence in student career development, and consider how they can incorporate career development components into their teaching practice. Findings and implications from Ho’s (2017) EdD study will serve as a backdrop of the session (research questions are included at the end*), while attendees are guided through reflective and discussion activities that enhance the awareness of their influence in student career development.
Current planned activities include having the attendees:
-Reflect on their “constellation of life roles” (Magnusson, 2014) and how roles, events, and experiences contribute to their approach as educators
-Consider how their current activities and interactions with students (e.g., curriculum, office hours conversations) help students develop employability skills
-Discuss their impressions on the notion of the ‘Everyday Career Influencer’, pondering on questions such as:
How do they currently serve as Career Influencers and demonstrate a sense of care for student career development?
How might they further their practice as Career Influencers?
What opportunities and/or challenges do they face as Career Influencers within their institutions? What can they do to take advantage and/or overcome them?
-EdD study research questions and sub-questions:
How do post-secondary education professionals conceive their influence in student career development?
How do they conceptualize the term “career”?
How do they see their role as having an impact on student career development?
How do they see themselves as individuals as having an impact on student career development?
What resources and/or competencies do they believe are important in furthering their impact on student career development?

Today’s students live in an interconnected, diverse and rapidly changing world. In this complex environment, a student’s ability to understand the world and appreciate the multiple different perspectives they are likely to encounter is key to their success.
In 2018, the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) conducted its first evaluation of students’ capacity to live in an interconnected world. The assessment focused on students’ knowledge of issues of local and global significance, including public health, economic and environmental issues, as well as their intercultural knowledge, skills and attitudes.

The key components that shape a positive international student experienceUniversity of Limerick
This presentation outlines the main factors that have been found by previous research studies, including those by UKCISA and the British Council, which determine the quality of the international student experience. It then shows how universities can interrogate the extensive data sets that already exist, for example from the National Student Satisfaction (NSS) survey and internal institutional records of students’ progression and achievement, to assess their performance on a number of dimensions. Finally, it highlights the importance of continually communicating with international students to understand and respond to their changing needs, drawing on the experience of Nottingham Trent University.

Work integrated learning is increasingly playing a key role throughout higher education in Australia. Industry groups, education networks and tertiary institutions are collaborating to provide students with learning pathways throughout their undergraduate degrees. This assists in ensuring the theory-practice divide is bridged and that students are better prepared to enter the workforce.
The Bachelor of Communication program at the University of Newcastle Australia offers majors in journalism, public relations, media production and media studies. The program embeds authentic learning experiences throughout the degree while satisfying key learning outcomes and this is done using several innovative approaches. While there is a formal placement course that students can elect to undertake their final year, academic staff in the discipline have embedded assessable learning experiences where students at all levels of their education, from first to final year, work on ‘real world’ projects and engage with industry, community groups and government organisations. In-class activities are structured to simulate professional environments and assessment design drives students to make the connections between theory and practice.
This approach ensures that the students receive authentic learning experiences where they construct contextual meaning rather than receiving information passively, what is known as a constructivist approach to learning, and it encourages students to engage with the processes, concepts and procedures of their chosen professions rather than isolated curriculum material. This paper is reporting on how UON’s BComn. program has integrated experiential learning to provide students with a learning experience that contains numerous innovative approaches.
