The War of 1812 was caused by tensions between the United States and Britain over maritime rights and the impressment of American sailors. Britain and France were engaged in the Napoleonic Wars and interfered with American merchant shipping. While President Madison attempted diplomacy, harassment of American shipping and the kidnapping of sailors led pro-war factions to push for a declaration of war in 1812. The war ended in stalemate by the Treaty of Ghent in 1814, but the Battle of New Orleans solidified American national pride after the war.

He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

3. Circumstances that led to the War of 1812
• Britain and France had been at war since 1803.
o Americans had tried hard to remain neutral
• In 1806, France passed a law that prohibited trade
between neutral countries and Britain. French
warships soon began seizing (taking) American
merchant ships that headed to Britain.
• In 1807, the British began seizing American ships that
traded with France and demanded that all American
vessels had to check in at British ports before they
could trade with any other nation.

• Embargo Act of 1807 stopped all trade with
Europe
o An Embargo is a government ban on trade
with other countries
• The Embargo was unpopular in port cities,
especially in the North

1809
• He repeals the Embargo Act
• The US began trade with Europe
again…
7. • US shipping continued to be harassed,
and cargo was seized.
• Impressment of American sailors
• Many British sailors became naturalized US
citizens and deserted British vessels and
joined American crews.
• British Navy kidnapped these sailors off
American ships and had them rejoin the
British Navy
8. • War Hawks were Southern congressmen
who wanted to go to war.
• They favored war to…
• Protect American ships and trade
• Increase National Pride
• To stop the impressment of sailors
• To take over CANADA!!!
9. • Not everyone in the US wanted to go to war
• Military was small
• Standing Army was small
• Navy was quite small only 22 ships
• Britain was a great Superpower and could
crush us like a bug and we could lose territory
that was gained in the Treaty of Paris or the
Louisiana Purchase
11. • In August 1814, British Forces captured
Washington D.C. and burned the White House
and the Capitol
12. The Star Spangled Banner
Unlike Washington D.C., Baltimore
was Ready for the British invasion.
After heavy bombardment of Fort
McHenry the British abandon the
attack and leave.
Poet Francis Scott Key witnessed
the bombardment and wrote a
poem “The Star Spangled
banner” which became the US
National Anthem.
13. Treaty of Ghent
Treaty was Negotiated and signed on Dec. 24, 1814
ending the war of 1812.
The War ended in a stalemate, where no party gained
or lost any territory.
News of the treaty didn’t reach the US and the Battle
of New Orleans took place after the treaty was signed.
The US won the battle of New Orleans and General
Andrew Jackson was made into a national hero.
