Human Milk fortifier for preterm babies by Endocura
1. An Ideal HMF
(Mortality, severe morbidity, neurodevelopment and anthropometric status)
To ensure long-term impact on health and neurodevelopment of the preterm baby and low birth
weight baby, an early nutritional support is utmost essential. It is also useful for immediate survival
and for subsequent growth.
Breast milk is undoubtedly an ideal food for a preterm infant. An addition of HIJAM (human milk
fortifiers) to the expressed breast milk (EBM) makes it complete food containing sufficient
nutrients in the form of protein, carbohydrate, vitamins and minerals for all infants with a birth
weight below 1800g. There being high rate of LBW infants (60-80%) out of total neonatal deaths,
which can be prevented by optimal feeding with FHM to prevent from infections and other
complications.
The Fortification of expressed breast milk with HIJAM (HMF) increases the nutrient content of the
milk without compromising its other beneficial effects (such as reduction of NEC, infections, etc.).
HIJAM, thus, aims to increase the concentration of all the required nutrients at an optimum level
in the expressed breast milk for use by all preterm and LBW babies including those who are even
at the customary feeding volumes. Experimental studies have shown that the use of fortified
human milk results in net nutrient retention that approaches or is greater than expected
intrauterine rates of accretion in preterm infants. Clinical studies in India and abroad have not yet
shown any significant adverse effects following fortification of human milk.
As per ESPGHAN recommendations 2009, there is a general consensus amongst Neonatologists
and health experts that all infants with a birth weight below 1800g need additional fortification.
No data, however, exist to determine dose classification of infants for fortified human milk (FHM).
The results of a systematic review of ten randomized controlled trials1
(more than 600 infants with
birth weight less than 1850 g), generally support the use of HM fortification as a common practice
in neonatal intensive care units. Other trials2, 3
have not come out with any significant differences.
HIJAM is an ideal HMF in its new and unique formulation having all the recommended nutrients
including vitamins and minerals in its correct proportion as per requirement of preterm, LBW and
ELBW infants.
Dosage: As directed by Health Expert.
HIJAM is one of THE PIONEERS in India and South East Asia.
