To Give or Not to Give in The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein
In his early childhood, a boy spends his time playing with his favorite tree, climbing its trunk, and
swinging from its branches. As the boy approaches adolescence, he desires money and the tree yields
its apples for him to sell. At adulthood, he yearns for a home and the tree offers its branches for the
man to build his home. At middle age, he asks the tree for a boat and the tree offers its trunk, which
the man cuts to build his boat. During his final years, the old man asks the tree for a quiet place to sit
and rest, and the tree offers its stump.
The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein is a simple story but one that poignantly illustrates the complex
philosophical discussion concerning the act of giving and taking. The inimitable ... Show more content

So how do we begin the journey of giving wisely? We suggest that clients begin with self discernment.
Why do you wish to give?
What values or principles do you and your family hold dear? What are some of the ideas, persons, or
events that molded you?
To whom do you want to give, and why? What impact would you want your giving to have on others?
What do you expect to gain from your family giving?
How much time and personal involvement do you want to commit to your giving?
These questions flush out the motivations and values underlying the gift and reveal its intent.
Understanding each other s personalities, the compatibility of goals, and the interpersonal abilities
helps participants collaborate for the benefit of a shared vision. The philosophy behind your giving
can become vulnerable and unprotected without a clearly defined intent. Trust agreements, wills, and
articles of incorporation may be insufficient to ensure fidelity to your philanthropic mission. Donors
investing the necessary time to consider these questions lay a strong foundation for defining a shared
vision and framework that will help fuel the act of giving, in a manner that is both constructive and
enduring for generations.
Now that you ve discovered and clarified your values and motivations, the next step is to articulate
your philanthropic purpose through a

The Pattern And Content Of East Asian Economic Integration
4.1.1. The Pattern and Content of East Asian Economic Integration
The most representative regional economic organization in East Asia is ASEAN, which was
established in Bangkok and formed by five founding members, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines,
Singapore, and Thailand. Brunei, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and Cambodia also joined successively to
form the ten countries of ASEAN. ASEAN is abbreviated by Association of Southeast Asian Nations,
which was built to contain the Communist forces with the purpose to steady military affairs and
political neutrality initially. According to Tong (2005), the content of East Asian economic integration
can be classified as Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and Comprehensive Economic Partnership (CEP).
Previously, East Asian economic integration focuses on the operation of FTA which applies the zero
tariffs on member countries; nowadays, economic cooperation agreement is inclined to CEP which
contains wider issues of economic cooperation such as tariff reduction, deregulation of investment
policy, enlargement of factors of production and etc. to draw the relation between member nations and
achieve a higher level of integration (Jin, 2003). Moreover, the continuing goal of ASEAN is to
promote the inter regional economic development, enhance the partnership and maintain the peace in
the region (Taiwan ASEAN Studies Center, 2014). Before Asian financial crisis, ASEAN is a
representative of the regional economic organization that especially focuses on

The Hero In Paulo Coelho s The Alchemist
Santiago, the hero in Paulo Coelho s fiction novel The Alchemist, travels many vast miles through the
barren desert only following omens. Not even a war will scare Santiago away from his treasure. After
interpreting a recurring dream Santiago understands there is a treasure that awaits him and he knows
he will not be able to achieve his goal without the advice of a few good guides. The King informs
Santiago of his Personal Legend which ignites Santiago s quest for his treasure. The Englishmen help
him on his dangerous journey across the desert of battling warlords. They also taught him about his
next major guide, The Alchemist. The Alchemist, a mysterious 200 year old man, teaches Santiago the
Soul of the World and how to read the desert. The King, Englishmen and the Alchemist all play a
major role in helping Santiago find his treasure. Without the help of these men, Santiago would not

He makes a deal with Santiago, he will help find the treasure but in exchange he wants one tenth of

Leonard Pitts Jr
Take the Time to Read a Book
Leonard Pitts, Jr. says, I am not alone. He continues, There are at least two of us who have forgotten
how to read. He doesn t mean that people have forgotten how to read; rather people have forgotten
how to become one with the text. There is more than one person who feels that concentration becomes
blurred when the text in front of one requires full attention. Short ads and topics one finds interesting
are usually easier to read than intellectual books that are imposed on one. It s a little funny, isn t it?
I liked this article because I identify myself with it. I often begin reading a paragraph and my brain
begins to move away from what my eyes are reading. The problem is that I don t realize it until I get
to the end of the page. Like Pitts, I have found myself drifting away or unable to sit down to read
material that my job requires me to study and discuss.
I agree with Nicholas Carr s theory, Is Google Making Us Stupid? Carr argues that search engines,
blogs, hyperlinks, etc. dump more information that one can possibly read. I agree with that, and I think

achieve the same results Pitts did when he read a paper book titled What happened, by Scott

referring to the time when he put himself on a chair that would keep him from distractions. He
achieved, once again, submerging in the text. I shall find an uncomfortable chair, turn my phone off,

Social Security During The United States
Social Security in the United States
I. Introduction Social security in the United States is a federal system run by the Social Security
Administration to provide monetary benefits, or welfare, to citizens who are retired, unemployed, or
disabled. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt enacted the Social Security Act which limited the
dangers of old age, unemployment, disability, and families with dependent children within the United
States during the great depression. In order to obtain the funds paid out to current social security
recipients payroll taxes called Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) and the Self Employment
Contributions Act (SECA) taxes are collected from the earnings of current workers.1 FICA and SECA

Taxes and Trust Funds To pay for current social security programs, payroll taxes called the Federal
Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) and the Self Employment Contributions Act (SECA) are collected
from current employed workers. In contributing to the system, workers will in turn receive retirement
benefits from the workforce during their time of retirement. FICA taxes are regressive and only affect
a certain limit of income, for example any earnings over $118,500 in 2015 are exempt from FICA
taxes.8 These income taxes are then pooled into Social Security Trust

Teach For America Summary
The article starts out by mentioning that throughout the city of New Orleans you will find that Teach
for America alumni hold high job positions in Louisianan s educational system. Examples of a few of
these positions include the superintendent of the Recovery District and a state school board members.
It goes on to explain that the people of New Orleans are asking controversial questions about Teach
for America that the organization has been dealing with since it was founded. Some of these questions
are: do its recruits continue working as teachers after their two year commitment ends? Are their
members prepared enough to handle inner city children and the unique challenges they face? And
what makes Teach for America recruits with no educational training or experience, good enough for

need people who are going to stay and invest in this community. Mickey Landry, the principal at
Lafayette Academy Charter School, has stopped hiring Teach for America instructors because of high
turnover rates and the instructors not being able to handle the job emotionally. Landry believes that
there s value in having a teacher who s willing to stick around to invest in their community. A national

Hart s Account Of The Relationship Between Law And Morality
Outline and critically evaluate Hart s account of the relationship between law and morality.
Introduction:
Natural law theorists believe that all law must be morally justified if it can be legitimised as law at all.
Legal positivism means the simple contention that it is in no sense a necessary truth that laws
reproduce or satisfy certain demands of morality, though in fact they have otherwise done so. (Hart,
DATE)
In Hart s eyes, though there may be a congruence between law and morality, it is by no means a
necessary connection. (Hart, DATE)
Hart promotes the need for a clear distinction between law and morality on two levels. Firstly the
Social and hermeneutic level in regards to both law and morality sharing vocabulary in both structure
and function showing that in many societies legal rules will match their moral rules. Second a logic
and hypothetical level Hart believes in the possibility of a legal system existing without the influence
of morality as there are cases were legal systems do not match the moral grounds of society.( see
Austins command theory and the idea of one sovereign ruling all) (SOURCE)
Hart s idea is this: All one/society needs is a legal system based on the four rules.
This paper will demonstrate how Hart s account of the relationship between law and morality shows
an understanding of how they both work together yet can also work as separate entities. It will take a
specific look into the internal point of view to aid the understanding of why

Dominant Theory Of Public Administration Essay
In the following paragraphs, I will explain the dominant theory in public administration practice and
elaborate on the major theoretical assumptions of the Old Public Administration. As stated in the
question, the world has transformed through globalization, information technology, and devolution of
authority since the latter part of the last century. The dominant theory in public administration has
been replaced from the traditional rule based, authority driven processes of the Old Public
Administration with market based, competition driven tactics in the New Public Management,
beginning in the 1980s (Kettl, 2000, p. 3). This was an effort to privatize government and streamline
public administration to maximize efficiency and productivity. Heavily relying on market mechanisms
to guide public programs, public administrators in the New Public Management are encouraged to
steer, not row, meaning they should not bear the burden of delivering services, but instead define
programs that others will carry out, through contracting or other means (Denhardt Denhardt, 2011, p.
13). Core values of the New Public Management include using private sector and business approaches
to the public sector, squeezing as many services as possible from smaller revenues, market style
incentives, providing customers more choices, and focusing on outputs and outcomes instead of
mainly processes.
The New Public Management in the United States was introduced and popularized by David Osborne
and Ted

Plato s Euthyphro
Our thought process and our framework of how we choose to go about our day are shaped by our
beliefs and morals. What is the difference between the two? How do we choose which one is right?
Plato s Euthyphro dilemma challenges that idea, he asked a timeless question of It s morally good and
God recognizes it as morally good so it s morally good or is it morally good because God wills it to be
morally good?
We can argue and take the first side that humans have a moral compass and possess the ability to
differentiate what is right or wrong without religion governing them. It can be interpreted that we can
be morally good, so therefore being morally good can be independent of God. God recognizes the
deed as morally good and then approves

Galilen s Impact On The Scientific Revolution
The Scientific Revolution was crucial for the development of science. During the 16th and 17th
century, after the reformation, the scientific revolution had begun. The scientific methods and thoughts
had seen change, however the members of the church did not like this. From the renaissance and the
enlightenment, many individuals were interested in contributing to the world with their ideas ands
many individuals were able to formulate conclusions. There were three men that were crucial in
shaping the scientific revolution. Galileo was a crucial figure in shaping the scientific revolution in
various subjects including astronomy. Nicoloaus Copernicus was a key figure and changed the way
man viewed the universe. As well as, Isaac Newton is known as one of the most influential figures due
to his contributions in astronomy. The impact of the scientific revolution was positive as seen through
Galileo Galilei, Isaac Newton, and Nicoloaus Copernicus.
Galileo had a positive impact on the scientific revolution as he contributed to physics, astronomy,
mathematics and philosophy. He has constructed his own telescope in 1609 and the telescope helped
him see and be able to explain the rings of Saturn, the moons of Jupiter and the phases of Venus. He
was also able to witness innumerable stars that he had never seen before. As he stated, The Milky Way
is nothing else but a mass of innumerable stars planted together in clusters. As well, from the
telescope, Galileo had proved that the moon

I. Methodology in the History
This period, which deals with the world the Indians knew before the arrival of European explorers,
poses difficulties flowing mostly from the lack of the usual evidentiary foundation for doing history:
written documents (for example, letters, speeches, treaties, constitutions, laws, books, newspapers,
magazines, almanacs). This lack need not be a major obstacle to historical study, however. Indeed, one
of the most important things we can accomplish in teaching this period is devising ways to give
students a sense of the spectrum of methods that historians use to investigate and understand the past.
We can give students a sense of the breadth and depth of the historian s task and the ... Show more

One last preliminary question: What is a culture? What do we mean when we talk about a given
people s culture? James Axtell has provided a definition of culture that, in many ways, illustrates the
problems of grappling with this slippery concept:
A culture is an idealized pattern of meanings, values, and norms differentially shared by the members
of a society, which can be inferred from the non instinctive behavior of the group and from the
symbolic products of their actions, including material a artifacts, language, and social institutions.
The following reworking of Axtell s definition may make it more accessible and useful:
A culture is the body of ideas, ways of looking at the world, values, and standards for conduct and
behavior that a given people or nation hold in common. It includes the range of meanings that people
assign to their own perceptions and behavior, as well as to the natural world around them. We can
define the elements of that culture, and understand how they fit together as a culture, by examining
that people s customs, language, religion, material artifacts, and social and political institutions.
That Indian peoples lacked some of the elements of European

Malcolm X, A Civil Right Activist And Powerful Black Leader
In the influential and provoking essay Learning to Read (1965), Malcolm X, a civil right activist and
powerful black leader, narrates his story on how books transformed his life forever into the realm of
human rights. Incorporating sequential narrative and social analysis, he explains his methodology in
attaining literacy and how this process influences him to espouse black separatism and resent white
people, while providing historical fact and jarring criticism in his arguments. Using first person
narrative, Malcom advances through the story by pointing each progression in detail, while using
provocative diction in order to evoke emotional response without forsaking essential argumentation in
his writing. Malcolm conveys his writing to an ostensibly general audience, although he purposely
focuses more on white people in order to unleash his anger and criticism.
Malcolm begins his auto biography in his frustration of not being able to express his thought and even
calls himself [dysfunctional] (Malcolm 2) to demonstrate his initial helpless condition. To make it
worse, as if to appeal to the reader s pathos, he was situated inside a prison. In his helplessness, he
reveals his innocent motivation of how he starts to attain literacy; by mere jealousy to another people.
He describes his own effort in an exciting tone, exhausting every inch of the dictionary by copying it.
He describes his dictionary as a miniature encyclopedia which allows him to understand the book s

Analysis Of Between Shades Of Gray
The writings and drawings you hold in your hands were buried in the year 1954, after returning from
Siberia with my brother, where we were imprisoned for twelve years. (page 336) Between Shades of
Gray is a story about a fifteen year old girl who has to fight for her survival and find her way back
home to Lithuania after her deportation to Siberia. Although there are many conflicts throughout this
story, it mostly focuses on the conflict between the main character, Lina, and the NKVD, or the
Russian secret officers that capture Lina and her family.
The conflict between Lina and the NKVD is introduced at the beginning of the book, and continues
right through to the end. For instance, on page 5, it says: Twenty minutes, the officer barked. He threw
his burning cigarette onto our clean living room floor and ground it into the wood with his boot. We
were about to become cigarettes. This quote foreshadows the bad things Lina and her family are about
to go through. At this point, Lina is not completely aware of what is going on, but it is clear to her that
she and her family are being arrested. According to her, it is for no reason, which sparks her distaste
for the NKVD men. Her hatred only grows stronger as the book progresses. Throughout the story, the
Soviet officers beat Lithuanians, sexually harass women, and more. On page 55 when Andrius, Lina s
love interest, comes back to the train car all bloody and bruised, Lina is outraged. I hated them, the

Microfridge: The Concept
Introduction:
Robert Bennett, a 31 year old Master in Engineering, decided to quit his job and start a business with
his new concept of the Microfridge . This was a design that incorporated a refrigerator, freezer and
microwave into a single compact unit. He created a new electronic circuit in which the refrigerator
shut down while the microwave operated and vice versa.
Analysing the Microfridge:
This 3 in 1 device consumed only 10 amps as opposed to the usual 20 amps while using a refrigerator
and microwave simultaneously. This generated less heat and reduced the risk of fire. It was a compact

Assuming an average of 200 students per college and a conversion rate of 50%, Bennett would need to
target 120 colleges in a year.
Recommendation and Plan of Action:
To increase the customer perceived value of the product, the idea of partnering with Sanyo and using
their brand name to promote the Microfridge could be explored. This would also help to tap in the
market already available to Sanyo. As Sanyo is an older and more recognized brand, it would create
trust and generate a greater brand following and value.
Considering the potential competition the Microfridge may face, a comprehensive promotion strategy
needs to be developed keeping the individual targets in mind. While the eagerness of the students to
adopt the Microfridge can be leveraged to convince the administration to provide Microfridge as an
amenity, various other promotion strategies can be considered. Bennett should send out sales persons
to colleges and arrange meetings with the administration to create awareness of the Microfridge and
its demand amongst the students. As the primary concern of the administration was fire safety in
student dormitories, the fact that 90% of the students violate these norms by using hot plates needs to
be highlighted. Then the fact that the Microfridge would reduce these risks can be brought home.
A public relations program can be initiated where the Microfridge can be reviewed by the press.

Circe s Influence On Greek Culture
Come join me on my magical island to experience the wonders of the redoubtable and awe inspiring
Circe. Circe, an immortal sorceress and goddess, Circe uses her power, in the Odyssey, to transform
Odysseus s men into swine. She lives on the island of Aeaea, a mythical land off the coast of Italy (
Circe ). In many myths, Circe has a variety of qualities and purposes affecting Greek culture.
To begin with, Circe displays a variety of qualities both human like and non human like. Notably,
Circe resembles a human, unlike many other gods, creatures, and goddesses. At the same time, she is
extremely powerful and is able to cause trees to move, the ground to become white, and men to
become swine (Parada 68). She just waved her wand and changed ... Show more content on

In Jason and the Golden Fleece , Pelias sends Jason to get the Golden Fleece, an almost unattainable
task (Daly Jason ). Nevertheless, Jason agrees to the task and with the help of two goddesses, Hera
and Athena, he builds a ship: the Argo (Daly Jason ). Jason and his fifty man crew consisting of
Atalanta, Heracles, Orpheus and many others then leave daling into the treacherous waters of the
Black Sea (Daly Jason ). Jason has many impossible tasks ahead of him but with the help of Medea,
he is able to master fire breathing Bulls with brazen feet and subdue many warriors (Daly Jason ). In
order to defeat the assailants, he threw a stone into the midst of the warriors (Daly Jason ). Afterwards,
Medea directs him to the Golden Fleece where Jason uses his wit and expertise to vanquish the
immense and powerful dragon guarding the fleece. After going back out to sea, Jason and Medea,
Circe s niece, arrive on Circe s island for protection (Daly Jason ). Later, she is informed they
murdered her brother, Apsyrtus, in order to escape from king Aeetes. Consequently, she runs them off
the island. Gillespie writes, Circe grants their request: however, the couple does not tell Circe the
whole truth about their deeds (290). Even though Circe does not play a major role in Jason and the
Golden Fleece, she is still an important piece to

A Raisin In The Sun Generation Gap Essay
From the beginning, Hansberry displays how the Younger family struggles with the generation gap the
problems that the older generation has in dealing with the younger generation and vice versa. In
Lorraine Hansberry s A Raisin in the Sun, family members Mama, Beneatha, Ruth, and Walter voice
their generational differences over religion, life goals, gender identity. These differences then lead to
disagreement and conflict among the family members. The first example is the difference in religious
beliefs of Mama and Beneatha. Mama, in her sixties, is conservative, family oriented, and devoutly
religious. She values religious piety and holds strong to a traditional Protestant belief system. While
Mama is faithful, Beneatha doesn t believe in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To start, Mama does not understand how Ruth and Walter can be so unappreciative and fail to
recognize what they do have versus what they do not have. Regarding Ruth and Walter s generation,
there seems to be an abundance of self perceived shame. They hold little pride in the jobs they hold.
Walter abhors his job as a chauffeur and takes little appreciation in the fact that he has a job at all, as
pointed out by Mama. Because of this miniscule amount of pride, they seem to have difficulty being
proud of anyone else. For example, they chastise Beneatha for going after her dream of being a doctor
instead of applauding her efforts. Mama understands the amount of hard work it took to get the family
where it is today, even if they are experiencing a rough patch. Her husband and her parents wanted to
create a better life for future generations. Mama recognizes that this is a process that will take time.
Unfortunately, they will not be immediately gratified with the perfect life. Though wise, Mama is
incapable of seeing the large toll the times have taken on Ruth and Walter s generation that creates the
high level of frustration. They are working day in a day out and getting nowhere fast. Overall, this
shows that her family is not wealthy, and does not really have extraordinary ambitions to do
something with their lives. On the other

Functionalism And Its Impact On Society
In this paper I will explain and argue for Functionalism. Functionalism allows for a scientific
approach to the mind body problem, while maintaining the integrity of mental and physical states and
attributing them to the functional roles they play within the bodily system. The main argument for
Functionalism is founded on the basis that it fulfills all of the requirements for an effective form of
Physicalism. 1. In order for a physicalist argument to be effective: it must account for mental states
being defined by their role; allow for mental and functional types to be defined circularly/holistically;
and allow mental states to be realized in a multitude of outcomes. Functionalism sufficiently ensures
all of these predicates. Functionalism is an adequate form of physicalism. Like other arguments for
physicalism, functionalism is based on the notion that everything that exists in reality is physical in
form. One of the main distinctions that makes the functionalist approach unique is its method of
defining objects. For example, many simple things are defined by what they re made of, such as gold
is simply Au. However more complex things are defined in terms of what their functions are. A heart
is defined as an object that pumps blood around an organism s body, regardless of what it is made of.
We cannot define a heart as something that is made of organic cardiac muscle, has valves, contracts,
etc. because theoretically, those components could be slapped together

The Perestroika Reform And Glasnost Policy Programs
Under Mikhail Gorbachev the Soviet Union underwent massive social, political and economic reform
that drifted away from communist ideology and this ultimately lead to the collapse of the Soviet
Union and failure of communism in Eastern Europe. This essay will focus on how the Perestroika
reform and Glasnost policy programs as well as other external and internal pressures contributed to the
failure of communism under Gorbachev. The aim of the Perestroika and Glasnost reforms was to
restructure and strengthen the Soviet political and economic system and provide more freedom and
democracy within the Soviet Union while strengthening Communism. However, these changes had
achieved exactly what they aimed to prevent when they were first elaborated and led to the failure of
communism and collapse of the Soviet Union. While focusing on the policies this essay will also
focus on the major increase in nationalism that occurred in the Soviet Republics as a result of the
Glasnost. External pressure from the western world was also a factor and the role that the United
States and the Ronald Reagan administration played in the downfall of communism under Gorbachev
will be examined. The essay will also discuss how the disintegration of Yugoslavia and the 1991 Coup
d état led to the failure of the policies and failure of communism.
Perestroika translates to restructuring and was a policy introduced by Gorbachev which intended to
reform the baseline of the Soviet economy in an attempt to

Characteristics Of A Freshwater Lake
Figure 1. The zones of a freshwater lake (Smith and Smith 2001).
Within the lentic ecosystems, temperature plays a crucial role. Lake temperatures does not variate
drastically, but does change gradually with every season of the year. Summer, the thermic stratification
of lakes, can be studied in different layers (Figure 2). The superior level of a lake that is terminally
stratified, is known to be epilimnion, which is the warmer part of the fresh water body. This water
remains in the superior part because as the water gets warmer, the light of the sun becomes clearer
than the dense water downward. The metalimnion is the known layer that would be ubicated beneath.
This layer is defined by the thermocline where the temperature slightly decreases. In this phase, the
temperature decreases 1 °C for every single meter that descends. Hypolimnion would be the last
stratified layer in a lake. This deep and cutoff from sources of air. (Korstad 2017)
Another crucial component is the description of the characteristics of a lake is to monitor the quantity
of oxygen and carbon dioxide to various depths. There is a reciprocal relation that exists between
these two elements when they are compared to the depth of a lake (Figure 2) (Korstad 2017). A lake
has the capacity top adhere oxygen by absorption or photosynthesis. The levels high oxygen is
necessary to maintain the necessary nutrients inside the water, and at the same time providing a source
food to all fishes. It is common to see

put into the limelight by the quality of their work. Authors of books and poems play a vital role in
educating the community through communicating certain issues through writing. This paper focuses
on discussing and analyzing Theodore Roethke, one of the poets who have been recognized all over
the world and whose work has been read by many people from all over the world. The paper tries to

techniques that he uses to ensure that he can pass his message in the most successful way. Theodore

The title The Waking is articulate as it effectively expresses the content compose in the poem as it
symbolizes the clarification and self discovery. It is a villanelle; consisting nineteen lines, consists of
five targets with a quatrain and has two rhymes from the beginning to the end. The first and the third
line of the targets recur alternately at the end of other targets, and they are repeated at the close of the
ending quatrain. In this poem, Roethke uses a leaf as the speaker. There can raise various questions on
why the author came up with a conclusion of using a leaf to speak in the poem. It can be because the
leaf is a universal thing, simple and observes many things that happen in life. The poem is about
intelligence at the self level, and the author has used various mediums to bring out a message in each
stanza differently (Gale page 12). To start with, the first stanza, the author keeps it clear that in life one
has to acquire knowledge and be shaped by the experience. In reality, every person falls asleep at
some time of the day and wakes up. Furthermore, it is a fact that everyone was born and the end of
existing in the world will be dead. In this case, the act of birth and life can be referred as the waking,
and death shows the sleep. Theodore Roethke puts it clearly that it is a must for one to change in a
lifetime and this is illustrated by the words waking slow from the first line of stanza one. He takes

Nuclear Power Has Been Highly Controversial
Nuclear power has been highly controversial in the world, specifically uranium mining. Uranium
mining is an option that was presented to the world for a source of nuclear weapons, nuclear medicine,
as well as nuclear power. Uranium is a natural element, it has an average concentration of 2.8 per
million in the Earth s crust. Uranium is very abundant and is more plentiful than gold, silver, and
mercury. The half life of uranium 238 is 4.46 billion years, the half life of uranium 234 is 245,000
years, and uranium 235 has a half life of 704 million years (Uranium: Its Uses and Hazards, n.d.).
There are four common kinds of extracting uranium from the ground; open pit and underground
mining, in situ leach mining (ISL), heap leaching, and milling. While there are several forms of
mining that have proven to be affective at extracting uranium from the ground, none of the mining
types have been guaranteed to stop nuclear radiation in the area that the mining took place. Nuclear
power has gotten a bad name ever since the atomic bomb, so many people have become skeptical on
how safe the rising expansion of uranium mining is. The environmental implications that uranium
mining has caused in the past has brought up the question on if the expansion of nuclear technology is
worth the risk. Uranium is a highly radioactive element that must be handled with care when mining.
In almost all forms of mining, the ore is leached with sulfuric acid whether it is underground still or
crushed and

The restaurant industry is highly competitive, and that competition could lower their revenues,
margins and market share. The business is subject to macroeconomic and other factors that may
negatively impact the results of operations. Restaurant development plans under development
agreements may not be implemented effectively. IHOP Corp. may have difficulty expanding in new
markets outside the United States. Risks factors can also be related to franchises and the acquisition of
Applebee s. Concentration of Applebee s franchised restaurants in a limited number of franchisees
subjects IHOP to greater credit risk. Franchisees generally are not limited purpose entities , making
them subject to business, credit, financial and other risks. IHOP Corp. business strategy may not
achieve the anticipated results for Applebee s. The significant costs that they incur in connection with
the acquisition may not be offset by cost savings in the future. IHOP may fail to realize the anticipated
benefits of the acquisition as a result of risks associated with integrating the business of Applebee s
with their existing business. IHOP may be unable to generate sufficient cash flow to satisfy their
significant debt service obligations, which would adversely affect their financial condition and results

I Believe In Signs
Do you believe in signs? Do you believe that the universe tries to talk to us all the time but we can
only hear the messages when we are ready? I do.
So my theme this year seems to be revolving around the multitude of times God has said Don t be
afraid . Ever since realizing that theme I have been so aware of my life moments when I know for sure
I would have been too afraid to do something or say something but I purposefully now choose the path
of bravery. This year it feels like the words Don t be afraid have been like a shield of armor around me
keeping fear at bay.
My attempts at living a life of don t be afraid first played out in my wanting to volunteer. It was as if I
had a calling from deep inside my soul to just do it; just put myself in the thick of where someone else
had a need.
A year ago I was made aware that people only volunteer where they feel most comfortable; that it is
rare that people will volunteer in places and activities they no nothing about or feel is too much away
from people and a life they are accustomed to. So I thought about that and realized that I didn t want
to be that kind of person so I signed up to be a volunteer in the cancer center of a hospital. Too many
scary, uncomfortable scenes played out in my head and that is how I knew it was the right thing to do.
Choosing this particular quest met all ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

  • 3. To Give or Not to Give in The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein In his early childhood, a boy spends his time playing with his favorite tree, climbing its trunk, and swinging from its branches. As the boy approaches adolescence, he desires money and the tree yields its apples for him to sell. At adulthood, he yearns for a home and the tree offers its branches for the man to build his home. At middle age, he asks the tree for a boat and the tree offers its trunk, which the man cuts to build his boat. During his final years, the old man asks the tree for a quiet place to sit and rest, and the tree offers its stump. The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein is a simple story but one that poignantly illustrates the complex philosophical discussion concerning the act of giving and taking. The inimitable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So how do we begin the journey of giving wisely? We suggest that clients begin with self discernment. Why do you wish to give? What values or principles do you and your family hold dear? What are some of the ideas, persons, or events that molded you? To whom do you want to give, and why? What impact would you want your giving to have on others? What do you expect to gain from your family giving? How much time and personal involvement do you want to commit to your giving? These questions flush out the motivations and values underlying the gift and reveal its intent. Understanding each other s personalities, the compatibility of goals, and the interpersonal abilities helps participants collaborate for the benefit of a shared vision. The philosophy behind your giving can become vulnerable and unprotected without a clearly defined intent. Trust agreements, wills, and articles of incorporation may be insufficient to ensure fidelity to your philanthropic mission. Donors investing the necessary time to consider these questions lay a strong foundation for defining a shared vision and framework that will help fuel the act of giving, in a manner that is both constructive and enduring for generations. Now that you ve discovered and clarified your values and motivations, the next step is to articulate your philanthropic purpose through a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Pattern And Content Of East Asian Economic Integration 4.1.1. The Pattern and Content of East Asian Economic Integration The most representative regional economic organization in East Asia is ASEAN, which was established in Bangkok and formed by five founding members, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Brunei, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and Cambodia also joined successively to form the ten countries of ASEAN. ASEAN is abbreviated by Association of Southeast Asian Nations, which was built to contain the Communist forces with the purpose to steady military affairs and political neutrality initially. According to Tong (2005), the content of East Asian economic integration can be classified as Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and Comprehensive Economic Partnership (CEP). Previously, East Asian economic integration focuses on the operation of FTA which applies the zero tariffs on member countries; nowadays, economic cooperation agreement is inclined to CEP which contains wider issues of economic cooperation such as tariff reduction, deregulation of investment policy, enlargement of factors of production and etc. to draw the relation between member nations and achieve a higher level of integration (Jin, 2003). Moreover, the continuing goal of ASEAN is to promote the inter regional economic development, enhance the partnership and maintain the peace in the region (Taiwan ASEAN Studies Center, 2014). He doesn t mean that people have forgotten how to read; rather people have forgotten how to become one with the text. There is more than one person who feels that concentration becomes blurred when the text in front of one requires full attention. Short ads and topics one finds interesting are usually easier to read than intellectual books that are imposed on one. It s a little funny, isn t it? I liked this article because I identify myself with it. I often begin reading a paragraph and my brain begins to move away from what my eyes are reading. Introduction Social security in the United States is a federal system run by the Social Security Administration to provide monetary benefits, or welfare, to citizens who are retired, unemployed, or disabled. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt enacted the Social Security Act which limited the dangers of old age, unemployment, disability, and families with dependent children within the United States during the great depression. • 9. Hart s Account Of The Relationship Between Law And Morality Outline and critically evaluate Hart s account of the relationship between law and morality. Introduction: Natural law theorists believe that all law must be morally justified if it can be legitimised as law at all. Legal positivism means the simple contention that it is in no sense a necessary truth that laws reproduce or satisfy certain demands of morality, though in fact they have otherwise done so. (Hart, DATE) In Hart s eyes, though there may be a congruence between law and morality, it is by no means a necessary connection. (Hart, DATE) Hart promotes the need for a clear distinction between law and morality on two levels. Firstly the Social and hermeneutic level in regards to both law and morality sharing vocabulary in both structure and function showing that in many societies legal rules will match their moral rules. Second a logic and hypothetical level Hart believes in the possibility of a legal system existing without the influence of morality as there are cases were legal systems do not match the moral grounds of society.( see Austins command theory and the idea of one sovereign ruling all) (SOURCE) Hart s idea is this: All one/society needs is a legal system based on the four rules. This paper will demonstrate how Hart s account of the relationship between law and morality shows an understanding of how they both work together yet can also work as separate entities. • 10. Dominant Theory Of Public Administration Essay In the following paragraphs, I will explain the dominant theory in public administration practice and elaborate on the major theoretical assumptions of the Old Public Administration. As stated in the question, the world has transformed through globalization, information technology, and devolution of authority since the latter part of the last century. The dominant theory in public administration has been replaced from the traditional rule based, authority driven processes of the Old Public Administration with market based, competition driven tactics in the New Public Management, beginning in the 1980s (Kettl, 2000, p. 3). This was an effort to privatize government and streamline public administration to maximize efficiency and productivity. Heavily relying on market mechanisms to guide public programs, public administrators in the New Public Management are encouraged to steer, not row, meaning they should not bear the burden of delivering services, but instead define programs that others will carry out, through contracting or other means (Denhardt Denhardt, 2011, p. 13). Core values of the New Public Management include using private sector and business approaches to the public sector, squeezing as many services as possible from smaller revenues, market style incentives, providing customers more choices, and focusing on outputs and outcomes instead of mainly processes. The New Public Management in the United States was introduced and popularized by David Osborne and Ted ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

How do we choose which one is right? Plato s Euthyphro dilemma challenges that idea, he asked a timeless question of It s morally good and God recognizes it as morally good so it s morally good or is it morally good because God wills it to be morally good? We can argue and take the first side that humans have a moral compass and possess the ability to differentiate what is right or wrong without religion governing them. It can be interpreted that we can be morally good, so therefore being morally good can be independent of God. God recognizes the deed as morally good and then approves ... • 15. The Americas to 1500 Essay THE AMERICAS TO 1500 I. Methodology in the History This period, which deals with the world the Indians knew before the arrival of European explorers, poses difficulties flowing mostly from the lack of the usual evidentiary foundation for doing history: written documents (for example, letters, speeches, treaties, constitutions, laws, books, newspapers, magazines, almanacs). This lack need not be a major obstacle to historical study, however. Indeed, one of the most important things we can accomplish in teaching this period is devising ways to give students a sense of the spectrum of methods that historians use to investigate and understand the past. We can give students a sense of the breadth and depth of the historian s task and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One last preliminary question: What is a culture? What do we mean when we talk about a given people s culture? James Axtell has provided a definition of culture that, in many ways, illustrates the problems of grappling with this slippery concept: A culture is an idealized pattern of meanings, values, and norms differentially shared by the members of a society, which can be inferred from the non instinctive behavior of the group and from the symbolic products of their actions, including material a artifacts, language, and social institutions. The following reworking of Axtell s definition may make it more accessible and useful: A culture is the body of ideas, ways of looking at the world, values, and standards for conduct and behavior that a given people or nation hold in common. It includes the range of meanings that people assign to their own perceptions and behavior, as well as to the natural world around them. We can define the elements of that culture, and understand how they fit together as a culture, by examining that people s customs, language, religion, material artifacts, and social and political institutions. • 16. Malcolm X, A Civil Right Activist And Powerful Black Leader In the influential and provoking essay Learning to Read (1965), Malcolm X, a civil right activist and powerful black leader, narrates his story on how books transformed his life forever into the realm of human rights. Incorporating sequential narrative and social analysis, he explains his methodology in attaining literacy and how this process influences him to espouse black separatism and resent white people, while providing historical fact and jarring criticism in his arguments. Using first person narrative, Malcom advances through the story by pointing each progression in detail, while using provocative diction in order to evoke emotional response without forsaking essential argumentation in his writing. Malcolm conveys his writing to an ostensibly general audience, although he purposely focuses more on white people in order to unleash his anger and criticism. Malcolm begins his auto biography in his frustration of not being able to express his thought and even calls himself [dysfunctional] (Malcolm 2) to demonstrate his initial helpless condition. To make it worse, as if to appeal to the reader s pathos, he was situated inside a prison. In his helplessness, he reveals his innocent motivation of how he starts to attain literacy; by mere jealousy to another people. He describes his own effort in an exciting tone, exhausting every inch of the dictionary by copying it. He describes his dictionary as a miniature encyclopedia which allows him to understand the book s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although there are many conflicts throughout this story, it mostly focuses on the conflict between the main character, Lina, and the NKVD, or the Russian secret officers that capture Lina and her family. The conflict between Lina and the NKVD is introduced at the beginning of the book, and continues right through to the end. For instance, on page 5, it says: Twenty minutes, the officer barked. He threw his burning cigarette onto our clean living room floor and ground it into the wood with his boot. We were about to become cigarettes. This quote foreshadows the bad things Lina and her family are about to go through. At this point, Lina is not completely aware of what is going on, but it is clear to her that she and her family are being arrested. According to her, it is for no reason, which sparks her distaste for the NKVD men. Her hatred only grows stronger as the book progresses. Throughout the story, the Soviet officers beat Lithuanians, sexually harass women, and more. Microfridge A Report on Microfridge: The Concept Introduction: Robert Bennett, a 31 year old Master in Engineering, decided to quit his job and start a business with his new concept of the Microfridge . This was a design that incorporated a refrigerator, freezer and microwave into a single compact unit. He created a new electronic circuit in which the refrigerator shut down while the microwave operated and vice versa. Analysing the Microfridge: This 3 in 1 device consumed only 10 amps as opposed to the usual 20 amps while using a refrigerator and microwave simultaneously. This generated less heat and reduced the risk of fire. It was a compact device that occupied less space which was ideal for smaller rooms such as student dorms and motel ... Recommendation and Plan of Action: To increase the customer perceived value of the product, the idea of partnering with Sanyo and using their brand name to promote the Microfridge could be explored. This would also help to tap in the market already available to Sanyo. As Sanyo is an older and more recognized brand, it would create trust and generate a greater brand following and value. Considering the potential competition the Microfridge may face, a comprehensive promotion strategy needs to be developed keeping the individual targets in mind. While the eagerness of the students to adopt the Microfridge can be leveraged to convince the administration to provide Microfridge as an amenity, various other promotion strategies can be considered. Bennett should send out sales persons to colleges and arrange meetings with the administration to create awareness of the Microfridge and its demand amongst the students. As the primary concern of the administration was fire safety in student dormitories, the fact that 90% of the students violate these norms by using hot plates needs to be highlighted. Afterwards, Medea directs him to the Golden Fleece where Jason uses his wit and expertise to vanquish the immense and powerful dragon guarding the fleece. After going back out to sea, Jason and Medea, Circe s niece, arrive on Circe s island for protection (Daly Jason ). Later, she is informed they murdered her brother, Apsyrtus, in order to escape from king Aeetes. Consequently, she runs them off the island. Gillespie writes, Circe grants their request: however, the couple does not tell Circe the whole truth about their deeds (290). • 25. A Raisin In The Sun Generation Gap Essay From the beginning, Hansberry displays how the Younger family struggles with the generation gap the problems that the older generation has in dealing with the younger generation and vice versa. In Lorraine Hansberry s A Raisin in the Sun, family members Mama, Beneatha, Ruth, and Walter voice their generational differences over religion, life goals, gender identity. These differences then lead to disagreement and conflict among the family members. The first example is the difference in religious beliefs of Mama and Beneatha. Mama, in her sixties, is conservative, family oriented, and devoutly religious. She values religious piety and holds strong to a traditional Protestant belief system. While Mama is faithful, Beneatha doesn t believe in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To start, Mama does not understand how Ruth and Walter can be so unappreciative and fail to recognize what they do have versus what they do not have. Regarding Ruth and Walter s generation, there seems to be an abundance of self perceived shame. They hold little pride in the jobs they hold. Walter abhors his job as a chauffeur and takes little appreciation in the fact that he has a job at all, as pointed out by Mama. Because of this miniscule amount of pride, they seem to have difficulty being proud of anyone else. For example, they chastise Beneatha for going after her dream of being a doctor instead of applauding her efforts. Mama understands the amount of hard work it took to get the family where it is today, even if they are experiencing a rough patch. Her husband and her parents wanted to create a better life for future generations. Mama recognizes that this is a process that will take time. Unfortunately, they will not be immediately gratified with the perfect life. Though wise, Mama is incapable of seeing the large toll the times have taken on Ruth and Walter s generation that creates the high level of frustration. They are working day in a day out and getting nowhere fast. Overall, this shows that her family is not wealthy, and does not really have extraordinary ambitions to do something with their lives. • 26. Functionalism And Its Impact On Society In this paper I will explain and argue for Functionalism. Functionalism allows for a scientific approach to the mind body problem, while maintaining the integrity of mental and physical states and attributing them to the functional roles they play within the bodily system. The main argument for Functionalism is founded on the basis that it fulfills all of the requirements for an effective form of Physicalism. 1. In order for a physicalist argument to be effective: it must account for mental states being defined by their role; allow for mental and functional types to be defined circularly/holistically; and allow mental states to be realized in a multitude of outcomes. Functionalism sufficiently ensures all of these predicates. Functionalism is an adequate form of physicalism. Like other arguments for physicalism, functionalism is based on the notion that everything that exists in reality is physical in form. One of the main distinctions that makes the functionalist approach unique is its method of defining objects. For example, many simple things are defined by what they re made of, such as gold is simply Au. However more complex things are defined in terms of what their functions are. A heart is defined as an object that pumps blood around an organism s body, regardless of what it is made of. We cannot define a heart as something that is made of organic cardiac muscle, has valves, contracts, etc. because theoretically, those components could be slapped together ... • 27. The Perestroika Reform And Glasnost Policy Programs Under Mikhail Gorbachev the Soviet Union underwent massive social, political and economic reform that drifted away from communist ideology and this ultimately lead to the collapse of the Soviet Union and failure of communism in Eastern Europe. This essay will focus on how the Perestroika reform and Glasnost policy programs as well as other external and internal pressures contributed to the failure of communism under Gorbachev. The aim of the Perestroika and Glasnost reforms was to restructure and strengthen the Soviet political and economic system and provide more freedom and democracy within the Soviet Union while strengthening Communism. However, these changes had achieved exactly what they aimed to prevent when they were first elaborated and led to the failure of communism and collapse of the Soviet Union. While focusing on the policies this essay will also focus on the major increase in nationalism that occurred in the Soviet Republics as a result of the Glasnost. External pressure from the western world was also a factor and the role that the United States and the Ronald Reagan administration played in the downfall of communism under Gorbachev will be examined. The essay will also discuss how the disintegration of Yugoslavia and the 1991 Coup d état led to the failure of the policies and failure of communism. Perestroika translates to restructuring and was a policy introduced by Gorbachev which intended to reform the baseline of the Soviet economy in an attempt to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. Characteristics Of A Freshwater Lake Figure 1. The zones of a freshwater lake (Smith and Smith 2001). Within the lentic ecosystems, temperature plays a crucial role. Lake temperatures does not variate drastically, but does change gradually with every season of the year. Summer, the thermic stratification of lakes, can be studied in different layers (Figure 2). The superior level of a lake that is terminally stratified, is known to be epilimnion, which is the warmer part of the fresh water body. This water remains in the superior part because as the water gets warmer, the light of the sun becomes clearer than the dense water downward. The metalimnion is the known layer that would be ubicated beneath. This layer is defined by the thermocline where the temperature slightly decreases. In this phase, the temperature decreases 1 °C for every single meter that descends. Hypolimnion would be the last stratified layer in a lake. This deep and cutoff from sources of air. (Korstad 2017) Another crucial component is the description of the characteristics of a lake is to monitor the quantity of oxygen and carbon dioxide to various depths. There is a reciprocal relation that exists between these two elements when they are compared to the depth of a lake (Figure 2) (Korstad 2017). A lake has the capacity top adhere oxygen by absorption or photosynthesis. The levels high oxygen is necessary to maintain the necessary nutrients inside the water, and at the same time providing a source food to all fishes. It is common to see ... • 30. Nuclear Power Has Been Highly Controversial Nuclear power has been highly controversial in the world, specifically uranium mining. Uranium mining is an option that was presented to the world for a source of nuclear weapons, nuclear medicine, as well as nuclear power. Uranium is a natural element, it has an average concentration of 2.8 per million in the Earth s crust. Uranium is very abundant and is more plentiful than gold, silver, and mercury. The half life of uranium 238 is 4.46 billion years, the half life of uranium 234 is 245,000 years, and uranium 235 has a half life of 704 million years (Uranium: Its Uses and Hazards, n.d.). There are four common kinds of extracting uranium from the ground; open pit and underground mining, in situ leach mining (ISL), heap leaching, and milling. While there are several forms of mining that have proven to be affective at extracting uranium from the ground, none of the mining types have been guaranteed to stop nuclear radiation in the area that the mining took place. Nuclear power has gotten a bad name ever since the atomic bomb, so many people have become skeptical on how safe the rising expansion of uranium mining is. The environmental implications that uranium mining has caused in the past has brought up the question on if the expansion of nuclear technology is worth the risk. Uranium is a highly radioactive element that must be handled with care when mining. In almost all forms of mining, the ore is leached with sulfuric acid whether it is underground still or crushed and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

So my theme this year seems to be revolving around the multitude of times God has said Don t be afraid . Ever since realizing that theme I have been so aware of my life moments when I know for sure I would have been too afraid to do something or say something but I purposefully now choose the path of bravery. This year it feels like the words Don t be afraid have been like a shield of armor around me keeping fear at bay. My attempts at living a life of don t be afraid first played out in my wanting to volunteer. It was as if I had a calling from deep inside my soul to just do it; just put myself in the thick of where someone else had a need. A year ago I was made aware that people only volunteer where they feel most comfortable; that it is rare that people will volunteer in places and activities they no nothing about or feel is too much away from people and a life they are accustomed to. So I thought about that and realized that I didn t want to be that kind of person so I signed up to be a volunteer in the cancer center of a hospital.
