theme, there s even a life size replica of a cow that they dress up for holidays. When walking into

Artist Statement
My still image film Illegal Alien grew from a project or series of works I created last semester.
The charcoal animation in the intro was inspired by a short film, Puerta Abierta , I made in
collaboration with a friend in my experimental video class. The subject matter within this short film
was about feeling outcasted as a Mexican American. These themes are veiled behind a narrative; a
deer wandering aimlessly throughout an empty house thus feeling out of place. Streamside Day by
Pierre Huyghe was a frame of reference here because I was intrigued by the deer stumbling around
an empty suburban home and what that could mean in a narrative. For this piece, I wanted to create
a narrative with similar themes from Puerta Abierta

With the final note of the song I was proud of how good I had played my first unplanned solo. I
set my Tenor Saxophone to the side and listened to the 5th Grade cheer at the beautiful music that
had been played for them. That s what I would be saying if everything had gone to plan, but
instead me, myself, and I had decided to make everything go down the drain for my first unplanned
solo in band. This story has no real resolution for the teary eyed 6th grade me sitting in her section

For Toni Morrison the racism is shouted clear as day throughout the story, but it leaves you with
a weird feeling of oddness. To start with our main girl Pecola, who even though is the main
protagonist, she is quite weak and mysterious though the book. Her passive way towards her
family and bulling, led her to believe she was ugly (what her mother said about her the minute
she was born) and the only way to change her life was to change her eye color blue, like all the
happy white girls had it. Pecola s passiveness made her not able to change throughout the story,

Monster Versus Heroes Essay In the book, The Devil s Arithmetic, by Jane Yolen, the characters
Rivka and Chaya make some very interesting points. These two points contradict as they are total
opposites and they suggest two different things. We are all monsters, Chaya said, because we
are letting it happen. However, Rivka also says, We are all heroes here. These two points have
two many different perspectives on what people are like in the concentration camps. Both
statements have their points, but the mostly correct one goes to Rivka. One of the reasons for
why Rivka is mostly correct is because all of the prisoners are making the best of what they have
and they are trying to help the kids feel better, even with the situation of being locked into a

Generation X, his ideals revolve around possessions as a measure of success, something no
authentic member of Generation X would tolerate.
Somewhere in the middle is Lalaina, a strange mixture of the two. She is the
valedictorian of her graduating class and is briefly employed by a television talk show as an
intern like production assistant until she is fired. In her valedictory address, she condemns the
BMW driving older generation of her parents who have left a lack of employment and natural
resources for her and her peers. Ironically, her graduation gift from her father is a used
BMW, which she concedes to drive until she can afford an inexpensive car of her own. Lalaina s
unemployment leads her to look for jobs where she is inexperienced (working as a news
journalist) to over qualified (flipping burgers at Burgerama), none of which are fruitful. Lalaina

then becomes a slacker herself by eating chips and chain smoking in her pajamas for hours a day.
The social issues facing the characters in the film are what differentiates Reality Bites
from other so called generational flicks such as Rebel Without a Cause, The Graduate, and The

The black man then gave Olaf a roll of money with two thousand six hundred dollars in it and
