Essay on Sensitive Periods in Developement
Sensitive Periods in Developement The child does not grow uniformly and homogeneously like a
crystal or a carrot, but by stages or phases, which succeed one another and which, differ from one
another. For proper growth and development it is necessary that the potentialities for developing
human relationships with which the infant is born be exposed to the organizing influences of another
human being. Accumulating evidence indicates that there exist critical developmental periods during
which the organism is ready for differential development, within which periods it must receive the
proper stimulations if it is to develop adequately. These critical developmental periods may be broadly
outlined as follows: 1) The period during ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
2) Maternal deprivation for a period varying for days within the first and second years, and weeks or
months during the third and fourth years. 3) Changes from one mother figure to another during the
first four or five years. With respect to the reality of the critical developmental periods, it is, of course,
well known that such critical developmental periods exist in the development of the body, with the
principle well established that the earlier the interference with their development the more widespread
will the disturbance in growth be. Tissues must reach a certain stage of differentiation before they can
respond; later such tissues achieve a certain relative fixity, so that they can yield. Prenatal
environmental influences For many years , in fact, it was believed that the baby in the uterus was
completely insulated form all outside influences, but now we know that is not entirely true.
Environmental influences ranging from radioactivity and stress in the outside world to drugs,
chemicals, hormones, and viruses in the mother s bloodstream can affect prenatal development. Even
though the placenta acts as a filter, keeping the blood of the mother and the fetus from mixing, a
number of potentially dangerous substances can pass through it. And, of course, if the

The Oil Curse, By Michael Ross
The discovery of oil in a low income country is often met with both excitement and dread. Many
theories circle around the idea of a resource curse that supposedly affects countries with large amounts
of resources. The resource curse essentially dictates that a country with large amounts of resources is
not as likely to thrive as a country with low levels of resources. The issue with this view is that it
generalizes too much; there is just as much variance in the levels of economic success between
resource rich countries as there is between them and resource scarce countries. This is why this newly
found oil in this country does not necessarily need to be met with dread, as there is a chance for
success. However, this newly found potential for wealth needs to be handled with extreme care. In the
following memo I will outline what the resource curse is, why some countries are affected by it and
others not, and finally I will outline how this country should handle its newly found oil wealth.
Michael Ross in his book The Oil Curse, analyzes in great detail the effects of oil on a country s
economic, political, and social environment. Ross argues that resource curse is not the appropriate
terminology; it is more accurately a mineral curse , as countries are generally not affected by other
types of resources. (Ross, p.1) In fact, oil and natural gas tend to be the most common villains of the
resource curse. Humphreys, Sachs, and Stiglitz hypothesize that countries with

Senator Todd Young is a republican and Joe Donnelly is a Democrat. Todd young is an American
politician who has been the U.S. Representative for Indiana since 2011.Senator Joe Donnelly was in
the House of Representative for 4 years . He was elected to be in the Senate 2012. Joe Donnelly serves
on multiple committees in the Senate. A few of them are the Armed service committee, Aging
committee, Banking committee and Agriculture committee. Senator Todd Young was in the House of
Representatives for 5 years and served on multiple committee. He was elected into the Senate in 2017.
Joe Donnelly voting record according to GovTrack was better than any current serving senator. He has
many issues he wants to solve while he is in office. He wants to reduce debt, help veterans, creating and
preserving jobs, saving energy, and national defense. Todd Young according to GovTrack had really
high votes and he was head in the polls during the entire election. He also has many things he wants to
fix while he is in office. He really wants to promote Pro Life, tax reform, education, agriculture, national
defense, and help create jobs. Both senators have the same goals about what they want to accomplish
in office. One of the Indiana Senators is a trustee and one is a delegate. Todd Young is definitely a
delegate because he takes the idea of others and records them the formulates his own opinion and acts
upon them. Joe is a trustee because he takes all

Wartime Propaganda During World War II
Wartime propaganda has always been a beneficial tool for warring nations. Its ability to effectively
persuade, influence, and convince citizens even in a time of distress has made it a vital component of
many war engaged countries. The United States, for example, reaped great benefits by using war
propaganda in World War II. American propaganda helped dramatically increase the sale of war
bonds, rate of civic engagement, and public morale. Although American propaganda during World
War II can be considered as extremely biased and racist, it would have been more difficult to for the
Americans to defeat Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany if propaganda was not used at all. The general
concept of propaganda, information or news intentionally spread ... Show more content on

Euphoric advertisements and posters were made to promote the United States and its allies strength,
courage and bravery. A well known example is the 1943 poster, United We Are Strong, United We
Will Win , displaying artillery guns decorated with the flags of the Allies, all firing in unison. Along
with boosting morale, many enthusiastic posters also encouraged women to join the workforce and to
convince their male partners that this activity was normal. As a result, the employment of women
jumped 15 percent from 1941 to 1943. Unfortunately, the United States government also engaged in
racism and discrimination to foster enthusiasm. Many posters and videos were created demonizing the
Japanese, representing them as subhuman and animalistic. Although this type of propaganda
motivated soldiers to fight by making the Japanese seem barbaric and savage, it also worsened
Japanese Americans relationships on home soil. Americans started to discriminate Japanese even
more, eventually forcing them out of their homes and placing them in internment camps, where they
were separated from American

Csi Miami vs Csi Real Life
For this assignment I chose Double Jeopardy from CSI Miami, season four episode eighteen. In this
episode a husband is found innocent of his wife s murder just as her missing body is being pulled from
the ocean by a fisherman. March 26 Mr. Rowe discovered his wife s racial status and she disappeared
on October 5th but the husband waited 3 days to report her death. During this time he practiced killing
Terisa Matherdy. Losing four twenty lb weight set in the process. The CSI team must try to find new
evidence linking the husband to the deed since he can t be tried again with the same evidence...as it is
considered Double Jeopardy. A little evidence and timely confessions shows that the husband and his
girlfriend did, indeed, kill the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Only in Hollywood would anyone not want or need to protect themselves from an obvious possible
source of disease. She did this twice in this episode, once on the scene of the found body and again in
her lab. Next we see Ryan Wolfe using soft ware that doesn t exist, have you seen the latest version of
windows? Well for those of you who didn t know the government have to buy from the lowest bidder.
So in order to use any high tech software like this you would need a whole lot of money. So their
group would have to be privately owned by some fat cat or sponsored. The US Government always
uses a soft ware that is one cycle out of production when it comes to soft ware because you don t have
to worry about those oh so annoying updates. So Ryan Wolfe decrypted a deleted file, yes this is more
than possible and they even show him using Command line Keywords used for Archive, Delete,
Report, and Restore Requests. As a cyber security major I can tell you this is spot on accurate, so to
speak. But a CSI member would not be doing this it would probably be a computer specialist and not
your local CSI member. Also why would a CSI member even be looking up credit card receipts? They
wouldn t, it would be a detective not Ryan Wolfe. Getting the credit card receipts of a set time period
in less than twenty four hours is also farfetched. From what I was told and read, CSI rarely interrogate
witnesses. Yet in this episode we see at least eight interrogations

Explain Why Didn T The Us Jump In To The Holocaust
Zaccheaus Allen
Ms. Childs
English 10
17 October 2014
Why didn t the USA step in to the holocaust faster Why didn t the USA jump in the holocaust sooner?
People might wonder and ask why. Well the USA was made to be one of the most powerful nations
political and social. And after world war, a burial war that lost USA a lot of people, the USA signed an
isolationist policy. That meant that the USA could not step in the to any other domestic conflicts. The
holocaust was a genocide that killed a lot of Jews. Over 6 million. The genocide started in January
30th, 1933 when Adolf Hitler can to be general of his army going 100000 deep. After eight years, in
December of 1941 the USA jumped in after years of watching to help. Before the USA jumped in to
help a little under 5 million Jews were killed. After four years of war and a million more Jews killed
the genocide ended in may 8 1945. There is nothing that compares to the Holocaust (Fidel Castro). ...

Well yes, they did but signed the isolationist police after the World War 1. They jumped in to that war
to help Britain, France, and Russia. But during that war the USA lost 116, 115 people so the USA
singed that policy so they didn t have to lose that many people again. After a couple million deaths
they knew that they need to act and after 2 years they finaly started to talk it out. World war two was
the war that stopped the genocide.it was a cold bloody war that only led to death. Over 60 million
people died. That s 2.5% of the worlds population. This war lasted 6 years and all started because of
the genocide. When Russians started to sail ships our way we were not putting up with that, we fought

Chocolate Syrup and Milk
Introduction: We were testing the solubility of the chocolate syrup brands while being stirred in whole
milk. Our purpose is to see which of the major brands of syrup is most soluble and for what reason.
This is important to our daily lives because it makes us aware of what types of materials we are
ingesting and this applies to our experiment by seeing which of the ingredients take longer to dissolve.
Information known is all brands are known to dissolve in milk but they all use different ingredients
and they will cause a difference in the time it takes to dissolve. New information that will be gained
from this experiment is which ingredients inside chocolate syrup will take the longest to dissolve,
from the type of sugars in it to the syrups. We expected the Nesquik to dissolve the fastest because it
did not contain any high fructose corn syrup while the other brand of syrup did. Also we observed
from the syrups that nesquik was very thin, while the others were very thick and slow in behaviour.
Our hypothesis is that the Nesquik will disintegrate the fastest in the milk because it lacks High
Fructose Corn Syrup.
Materials Procedures:

1. Hershey s Chocolate Syrup
2. Nesquik Chocolate Syrup
3. Great Value Chocolate Syrup
4. Any ONE of brand whole milk

Slavery Is The Key For Achieving Freedom
In today s society, we take many things for granted because they come easy to us. Education, in many
of our lives, is something that is dreaded, something that we do only because we have to. But 200
years ago, things were much different. Slavery unfortunately existed in our society, and slaves weren t
granted the gift of education. By not having an education, they were not able to completely understand
their situation, and therefore unable to get out of it. Slaves had a limited option in achieving freedom,
and in order to do so, they had to become educated, enough to be able to understand slavery, and they
had to be religious to be able to see through the hypocrisy of the religious slaveholders.
For slaves, education is the key to achieving freedom. It develops one s sense of curiosity, and allows
the mind to question things, and to develop it s own ideas and opinions. For slaves, the gift of
education was rare, but if one was lucky enough to have it, they began to see the true nature of slavery,
and it made them more likely to try and become free. When Frederick Douglass was a young boy, he
befriended a few white children who gave him a glimpse of what having an education is like. When
remembering this important time in his life, he says, With their kindly aid, at different times and
different places, I finally succeeded in learning to read (66 67). The young boys gave Douglass a
book, called the Columbian Orator, the first book he had ever laid hands on. This

Iron Age
Iron Age 1300 B.C.E.
The iron age is when iron was discovered to be stronger and better than bronze, causing a huge
increase in the production of iron instead of bronze. Iron provided more powerful weapons and better
tools that last longer. Iron was discovered independently in different parts of the world at different
times, giving the civilizations who discovered it first an advantage over ones that didn t discover or
use iron yet. This event and the picture correspond with the key concept 1.2.IIB. The picture shows
early people using iron for multiple tasks. The domination of iron over bronze was an important
technological innovation, it spread quickly, and was used for everything and bronze was soon
insignificant.

Torrance And Creativity
Dr. Torrance and Creativity
Dr. Ellis Paul Torrance was a very creative individual whose work with the aging population he has
influenced program offerings at Kansas State University. The objectives of this paper include
discussing Dr. Torrance s background, a reflection of his work in creativity, how his work has
influenced program offerings, and how Dr. Torrance s work could impact our work with aging. Lastly,
I will discuss what I have learned from studying him.
Dr. Ellis Paul Torrance was born in 1915 to a farming family in rural Georgia (Childs, 2013). He
started school late, at age seven due to a learning disability, but through encouragement from teachers
and family, Dr. Torrance became an avid reader and writer, often winning writing ... Show more

He noticed that students labeled as difficult may actually have creative potential that just hadn t been

US Army, Dr. Torrance began his life long interest and journey into creativity (Bert 2012). In 1946,
after leaving the Army, Torrance started his career at Kansas State College in the counseling bureau
where soon after he was transitioned into the role of Dean of Men and a few years later returned as
Director of the Counseling Bureau and professor of psychology (Bert 2002). In 1951, he was
appointed Director of Survival Research in the Air Force, and in1957 he developed a definition of
survival creativity, whenever one is faced with a problem for which he has no practiced or learned
solution, some degree of creativity is required (Millar, 1995). During his time at the Air Force, he
wrote 135 research papers with his colleagues on survival and creativity and began designing
creativity tests (Bert, 2002). His research studies continued and he began to publish books and more
research studies(Childs, 2013). As a professor of educational psychology at the University of Georgia,
he invented the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking setting the standard for measuring creativity
(Bert, 2002). He also developed the Future Problem Solving Program, which is known all over the
world (Bert, 2002). Throughout his long career, Dr. Torrance authored over 2000 books and research
articles, and was a much sought after speaker and lecturer (Childs,

Thermo-Chemical Storage Systems Essay
Thermochemical heat storage can be physical (sorptive) or chemical based on the material used. The
storage system which does not involve the production of new compound is called sorptive storage
while those which involve formation of new compound are called chemical storage. The successful
thermochemical storage system is sorptive storage system that works on utilizing the heat of reaction
enthalpy. Thermochemical storage has considerable benefits when compared to sensible and the latent
heat thermal energy storage systems since it is easily controllable which prevents the heat loss. The
features of sorptive heat storage technology enables the implementation on a large scale.
Firstly, charging process of the thermochemical storage method ... Show more content on

The features like increased storage capacity, decreased heat loss to the environment and flexibility of
heat storage over a wide range of temperatures makes the thermochemical storage system superior to
other storage systems.
The sorptive technology involves the absorption or adsorption of molecules through a reaction thereby
storing heat. This kind of sorption system results in the formation of physical bond between the
reaction pair, adsorbent (A) and adsorptive (B), which has a preferably high energy turnover. The
preferred reaction is mostly reversible in order to perform many charge and discharge cycles.
A + B ↔ AB + heat (see Figure 2) Figure 2: Schematic diagram of sorptive thermal energy storage
technology
When charging the compound, heat is applied to substance AB which dissociate into separate A and B
molecule/compound. The storage is facilitated by using certain inhibitors that control the reverse
reaction. To release heat, the A and B components are reacted by removal of inhibitors, ultimately
favoring the reaction, resulting in the formation of compound AB and releasing heat. During this
cyclic process, when the reaction between A and B is prevented, the heat which can be stored due to
chemical energy cannot be released. The adsorbent such as zeolite (see Figure 3) react with water
thereby act as a sorptive storage material where adsorption of water

Tom Hardy The Man He Killed Essay
The Man He Killed by Tom Hardy kicks off immediately talking about the man he once met in the
war. An anonymous speaker starts off the poem talking about someone he met, and if they had met
differently, they could ve sat down and shared a drink together and had a good time. Hardy
immediately has the reader wondering what extreme event took place in the current situation in which
he met the man. This first stanza and the title both help foreshadow what the meeting between these
two unknown men was. Hardy s eloquent use of the setting in the opening stanza gives the reader a
feasible idea that these two men could be or could ve been great friends. As the poem progresses, we
learn more about the situation between these two mysterious men and their meeting together. ... Show

Both men took a shot, and the man (the speaker) was aiming at dropped to the floor. He immediately
starts off with the next stanza trying to explain as to why he did it I shot him dead because Because he
was my foe. This quote shows that some men know the killing they did was senseless but they try and
suppress the thoughts and even try to change the way they feel about it by repeatedly telling
themselves different reasons as to why they did it. The final stanzas talk about how the two men were
one in the same, they both enlisted in the war, and both were in the infantry, the man felt as if they
were the same person. The closing words of the poem open the reader s eyes about war by saying You
shoot a fellow down, You d treat if met where any bar is, Or help to half a crown. Hardy shows the
senselessness in the war that you shoot people who you don t know yet they are already your enemies,
but if it were a different situation, you d be fellows with that same man and share a drink

Deep Ecology Essay
Whether its watching a whale jump up in the air and seeing him crashing back into the water, or
looking at all of the trees leafs changing colors in the fall time; nature is a beautiful thing. In the past,
traditional Native Americans once cared about the land. The grass, trees, rocks, and everything else
had value. Nowadays most people are moving away from these ideas and moving towards a capitalist
mindset, only caring about their own personal gain. Deep ecology is defined as an environmental
movement and philosophy that regards human life as just one of many equal components of a global

This could potentially lead to the human population becoming extinct. I m not saying this is going to
actually happen or be an immediate result of our actions but this is what the world is coming to. The
companies are the indirect problem in this issue. It s the population s demand that keeps these
companies going which makes us the direct source to the problem. Almost everyone is caught up in
the capitalist mentality, only caring about themselves and seeing how much money they can make.
And when that happens they go out and buy more products which have negatively affected the
environment. It s a vicious cycle that doesn t seem like it is coming to a stop anytime soon.

I know we have had some fine preachers in our community, men who have lived their lives really

One example is Matthew 7:21 23. Not every one who says to me, Lord, Lord , will enter the kingdom

Cause Of The Civil War
This historical study will define the causes of the Civil War by understanding the divisive nature of the
southern agrarian and northern industrial economies. In the Antebellum era, the South relied heavily
on the production of cash crops, such as cotton and tobacco, that relied heavily on a plantation
economy. Southern plantation owners also relied heavily on slave labor, which prevented more fluid
labor markets from encouraging industrialization. Plantation owners did not want the advanced
agricultural machinery used by northern industries, since the slave trade was highly profitable system
of trade in and unto itself. In the North, the rapid advancement of industry had a greater mobility in
labor markets, since wage labor replaced the slave ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
More so, it identifies the exponential development of Northern industry, which vastly outperformed
the South of economic output and military power. Of course, the South was uninterested in developing
its own large industrial factories because it challenged the agrarian reliance on slave labor. This is part
of the passage from slavery to contract that was causing so much strife before the Civil War, which led
to open warfare between the North and the South. These irreconcilable differences were part of the
continual rift between the agrarian economy of the South and the rapidly growing industrial economy
during the antebellum era. The industrialization of the North was part of a diversification of the
economy, which slowly abandoned the tenets of slavery in the late 18th century and into the early 19th
century. However, the South continued to support an increase in slave ownership that eventually
became a large scale business in the agrarian labor markets. These are important causes of the Civil
War that relied heavily on the inability of the North and the South to integrate more cooperative
economic relationships as a result of the conflict of slave labor and voluntary wage labor in the mid

Magazines no longer give girls advice on how to grow up to be a respected person or a loving friend;
instead they give advice on how to hook up quick or make his dreams come true. Where has all the
wholesome advice gone? Women have let the idea of looking beautiful take over their self confidence
and life. Healthy Place, an online magazine teaching women about living a healthy life, says that,
today s fashion models weigh twenty three percent less than the average female, and a young woman
between the ages of 18 34 has a seven percent chance of being as slim as a catwalk model and a one
percent chance of being as thin as a supermodel. So why do women push themselves to be excessively
thin when these models are anomalies? They do it because the media tells them that this look is the
only look that can attract men. Even if a woman is beautiful according to the media s standards, she
will always find something about her body that she hates, whether it is her hair or her belly button, no

ATP CP System:
The ATP CP framework contains a collaboration between two particles, ATP and creatine phosphate
(CP) inside the mitochondria of a cell. The CP atom discharges a lot of vitality when the bonds
between its creatine and phosphate atoms are separated. This compound of creatine and phosphate
(CP) is critical in this methodology. The ATP CP pathway is the body s essential quick wellspring of
vitality of the three vitality frameworks. Exercises which oblige quick and prompt vitality are
intensely reliant on this pathway. After ATP CP is utilized up the other two vitality frameworks assume
control.
Lactic Acid System (anaerobic glycolysis):
The lactic corrosive vitality framework uses glycogen from carbs. This is a two stage vitality
framework additionally called glycolysis. Glycolysis is basically the blood transporting a glucose

Varda And Ozu Analysis
Society and Self Service: Key Thoughts of Varda and Ozu
A sound comparison one could make between Agnes Varda s and Yasujiro Ozu s masterpieces is that
each presents a question key to feminist theory through the lives of their singular female protagonists:
what is the effect of societal pressures on a woman finding her identity? As the titular character Cleo
in Agnes Varnas Cleo a 5 de 7 rejects her role as an object of the public gaze, and Noriko of Yasujiro
Ozu s Late Spring grapples with her fate to play the part of a traditional Japanese housewife, both
directors explore this common concept of finding one s identity in an unkind world through the use of
such themes as routines, charades and emptiness.
Routines are a brief, but necessary element to both films; they establish their leading characters as
seeking security in repetition of societal norms, and serve to highlight the director s signature style of
camerawork in each film. For example, in reference to the title of Agnes Varda s film, Cleo expects to
receive her lover at 5 p.m., repeating a behavioral convention encouraged by French society to meet
one s lover at this time. She dons her wig and fluffy coat, lies on her bed in wait of her attractive but
patronizing lover, and plays along with his shallow display of affection when he comes and goes as, it
is implied, she has done several times before. The practice of this routine allows the camera to
advocate the underlying issue of the scene; the height of the

Church Service Reflection
In June 2016, I was blessed with the opportunity to serve on a mission trip to Haiti. While this whole
experience was outside of my cultural norms, I found that the church service was specifically unlike
anything I had ever experienced before. The church located on the campus of Mission of Hope: Haiti,
was constructed in the form of a crucifix. I honestly had no idea what to expect from the Sunday
morning church service. Before the church service began, my friend and her family made sure that I
took my own bible and journal to church, since the message was spoken in Haitian Creole.
I knew that we were in Haiti serving those who were living in poverty, but to my surprise the Haitians
who attended the church service were dressed in very nice clothing. I believe this was the biggest
stereotype going into the church service. After spending time in nearby villages and interacting with
the Haitian people, I did not think they would have the means to have such nice clothing. I love that
throughout the week they wear casual clothing and on Sundays wear their best clothing. That
reminded me a lot about how I was raised. As a child, I always had to wear a skirt or dress to church.
This younger kids reminded me of myself.
Enriching awareness This experience allowed me to understand the universal Church better. It was
such a cool thing to experience the worship that was included in the service. The songs were sung in
Creole, but I could sing the words in English because I was able to

investigate the effectiveness of elevating the head by 30 to 45 among other prevention measures. The
method used was a computerized literature search in the databases online, over the period 2007 to
2012. It was observed that the elevation of the head at 30 and 45, is one of the most simple and
effective prevention. We conclude that good nursing practices associated with elevated bed rest at 30

Hills Like White Elephants Analysis
A Life or Death Decision How difficult is it to make a decision that could potentially ruin one s life?
Ernest Hemingway s explores this question in his short story, Hills Like White Elephants. The story is
a concise conversation between an American man and a girl. The names of the characters as well as
their relationship status remain unknown. For the entirety of the short story, the characters sit in a train
station perturbed about making a decision on a potential operation of the girl. The man and the girl go
back and forth contesting what they should do about the operation. The story ends on a cliffhanger,
leaving the reader unaware of the girl s final resolution. In Hemingway s short story, Hills Like White
Elephants, his use of symbols, innuendos, and dialogue create a high level of tension for the man and
the girl which ultimately conveys the difficulty of the decision that the couple must make together.
Throughout the story, the man and the girl drink alcohol to deivert them from dealing with their
problems. Every time the couple gets closer to deciding what to do about the operation, one of them
suggests that they get another beer. In the story, the man says, I don t want you to do anything that you
don t want to do. The girl answers with Nor that isn t good for me and the man replies Could we have
another beer? (Hemingway 125). The alcohol is their escape from reality. It calms them and helps
them avoid the situation at hand. The alcohol may have

group as well as individual therapy, lectures, discussions and attendance at 12 step meetings that are
run by counselors, nurses, physicians and psychologists. Treatment is individualized, and Cognitive
Behavioral as well as Motivational Enhancement therapy is included in the process (Hazelden, 2012).
Another prevention program is the school based Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program

Alexander The Great s Influence On The Persian Empire
Alexander the Great, he is one the most glorified and historically significant leaders within history.
Unique, the one word that could be used to describe the details and importance of his life. Unlike his
predecessors that came before him, what sets him apart has to be how he rose to power and how he
used that power. And even though he only lived until the age of 33, he accomplished what those that
came before him failed to do so. The topics to be discussed are how he rose to power and what he
managed to accomplish through military strategies and his cultural influence on the Persian Empire.
In order to actually understand how Alexander the Great came to power, we must first explore into his
background. He was born around 356 B.C.E in July within the capital city of Macedonia. When he
was just a small child, he spent his time observing his father, Phillip the II, who during that time was
the current leader of Macedonia. His father was a force to be reckoned with, and scholars like to link
this to Alexander s future success within the empire. Along with watching his father, little Alexander
at the age of 13, eventually gained a very smart and intelligent tutor by the name of Aristotle. Of
which, was a very successful philosopher that taught him literature and rhetoric. It would later serve a
purpose in increasing Alexander s interest in many subjects such as science, medicine and philosophy.
This process of his training would continue on until he reached the age of 16. Later

Lolita Essay
De victimizing Lolita: Removing Emotion from the Classroom
Abstract: This paper focuses on Vladimir Nabokov s novel Lolita. Specifically the argument discusses
the need for reform within the classroom setting regarding student reaction and interpretation to the
text. Class discussion involving Lolita tends to fall under a blanket of socially constructed
presumptions that lend the discussion toward a shallow and judgmental reading of the text, and this
tendency limits the discussion. This paper argues that, for a teacher attempting to teach this novel, it is
important to limit the amount of emotionally reactionary responses and guide the class towards a more
allegorical or symbolic representation of the text. This paper is intended for ... Show more content on

However, when I found myself again discussing Lolita with this same narrow approach in my
graduate class, I began to wonder if the majority of readers only focused on Humbert Humbert s
transgressions. Had the rest of the world missed the point? Could no one recognize the genius behind
the monster? Is it possible for the average reader to grasp the ironic intentions of the author, or is
Lolita forever overshadowed by the reader s need to judge and dismiss?
Too often Lolita is read from only one perspective, the perspective of monstrosity. Nabokov the
pornographer threatened to expose and corrupt others, particularly children, through the publication of
a novel about unnatural desire (Whiting 835). The tendency is for the average reader to become
entangled in a moral debate, to take opposition to the seemingly criminal and amoral acts of the
narrator, to condemn him for his blatant and grotesque sin. This surface analysis of the text was
prevalent at the time of publication, delaying the release of the novel in the United States by three
years. Most reviews of the novel [Lolita] dealt with the narrow issue of its alleged obscenity. The
novel was published three years earlier in France because Nabokov could not find an American
publisher ready to risk publishing it (Tamir Ghez 65). Critical theory since this time has uncovered
multiple layers of interpretation that offer much more meaningful analysis of the novel

Cyber Security And Social Engineering
Introduction
Background Information
Of all the things that we ve learned in this course, one of the weakest aspects of cyber security is
social engineering. Social engineering is a way for people to manipulate others into breaking normal
security procedures, by relying heavily on human interaction. An organization could have the most
state of the art cyber protection software and the strictest policies, but all of that can be broken down
from human error, negligence, or malice. Cyber criminals can exploit personal information from
someone easier than hacking a system for the same information. We tend to give out personal

Forrest, the main character, is a young man who has a low IQ. Despite this obstacle, he manages to

O Connor s Short Stories, Good Country People, And A Good...
Sometimes the only thing that is constant in life is change. As time passes on, people, places, and
ideas are bound to change. Not only can people change, but whole societies and generations can as
well. As these changes happen, the differences between generations can become very large, and this
can eventually lead to conflict. In Flannery O Connor s three short stories, Everything that Rises Must
Converge, Good County People, and A Good Man is Hard to Find, the gaps between generations
causes problems. A skewed perspective about both the past and present causes generational conflict in
these stories, and O Connor shows how this narrow mindedness can eventually lead to a catastrophic
ending. Nostalgia for good country values skews the judgment of characters in O Connor s stories. In
Everything That Rises Must Converge Julian s mother is an example of someone who makes a bad
decision caused by her dated views on society. Even with multiple warnings from her son, she still

The Life of the Catholic Church in the US
The Catholic Church During Colonial Period between 1565 1783. The life of the Catholic Church in
US. Began with the Spanish conquerors, who founded the parish of St. Augustine, Florida, in 1565. In
1598 the Spanish Franciscans they were evangelizing the peoples of New Mexico, but in 1680 the
Hopi Indians rose up in arms, killed the priests, and prevented the restoration of the missions. Other
missionaries who have come from Mexico christianized Arizona in the XVII century and Texas and
California in the eighteenth century. Two of these priests deserve to be quoted in particular: the jesuit
Eusebio Kino (v.) and the Franciscan junipero Serra. Kino in 1687 established the first mission in
Arizona and in 1700 built San Xavier del Bac, missionary center for the next century. On the basis of
their own explorations and with maps by the facts, projected form two chains of missions: the first
from the Baja California to Monterrey in the Alta California, the second covering from Arizona. When
the Jesuits were on the verge of completing the draft of Kino, were expelled from the Spanish territory
(1767), giving his missions to the Franciscans. Fray junipero is who, since 1768, directs the
Franciscan missions, year in which the Spaniards have already settled in the Alta California. In 1769
establishes its first mission in San Diego and in 1770 its central missionary in San Carlos Bor Romeo,
in Monterrey. (Shea, 9) The North of US. States and Louisiana were

The Employment Of Contemporary Virtualization Technologies
Cloud Computing
Anthony D Payne
CSIA 412
Professor Miller
March 1, 2015
Through the employment of contemporary virtualization technologies, with the incorporation of
advanced tools that expands the coverage of the systems administrator, the cost and labor of
operations will be significantly lowered. Efficiency improvement will have a direct impact on
operation costs of many institutions. Resources that could have been used in the buying and
maintaining data center infrastructure will be used in citizen centered services and other new
innovations that can go a long way to assist the citizen and ensure smooth running of the government.
Therefore, cloud computing will be a driving force to ensuring efficiency in the way public resources
are managed to the advantage of the people.
Every public office has a data center infrastructure where its data is stored and retrieved when needed.
In most cases, this infrastructure is underutilized. With cloud computing, the data storage sections are
eliminated because of pooling of IT Infrastructure resources and sharing across a large number of
organizations and offices that are possible with cloud computing. The wastage that is realized when
data centered are not utilized is thus eliminated because different offices have peak seasons in
different times hence making the system to be put in use all year round. This ensures that public assets
are better utilized and loses reduces or even eliminated.

Women s Health Care Reform
Woman s health issues must be considered in the health care reform because of preventative health
care, mental health, and women need specific health care and benefits. 1) Preventative health care in
women provides the diagnostic and preemptive disease treatments. Preventative measures include
contraceptives, breast examinations, pap smears, counseling and education, and mental health
screenings. Preventative care is so important in women because women need specific health care
rather than men. The specific health care that is needed for women prevents the extra costs of future
treatments and medications of diseases and genetic disorders that are prevalent in women only. The
health care reform must include women s health for that fact that

According to nithyanda.org A beginner s mind is defined as having an attitude of openness, eagerness,
and freedom from preconceptions when approaching anything ( What is a beginner s mind, nd, 2015).
Where we as individuals feel as though we must always know the correct path or answer the beginner
s mind exists within a space that it knows not what to do. The article elaborates that this is a delicious
state when you are sure of nothing, yet completely fearless, totally available to the moment ( What is a
beginner s mind, nd, 2015). A beginner s mind could be compared to that of children. The mind is
submersed into an alien environment; although, through this lack of direction can one truly grasp the
concept that is presented to them. It is fundamentally important for a novice to practice a beginner s
mind when delving into the study of sociology. If a student maintains a beginner s mind, he/she shall
be able to devote oneself to the new and complex theories developed by sociology. To make oneself
available to complete the subject one is studying then the individual will be able to fully grasp

A Research Study On Mutual Fund Essay
1.0 CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Introduction
A mutual fund and also known as unit trust can be defined as a form of collective investments that
allows the investors which have similar investment objectives to pool their funds to be invested in a
portfolio of securities or other assets. The fund managers will invest the pooled funds in the portfolio
fund, particularly include some assets like cash, bonds, deposits, stocks, commodities and also
properties parallel to the fund s objectives. Each investor owns shares, which represent a portion of the
holdings of the fund.
The mutual fund industry in Malaysia started as far back as 1959 with the advent of the Malayan Unit
Trust Limited, which was launched by a group of Australian investors. The development of the
industry did not take off until the 1980s after the launch of Amanah Saham Nasional (Barom, 2004).
The Amanah Saham Nasional was initiated by the Malaysian Government to promote equity
ownership by the indigenous population. Aided by high and consistent economic growth since the
1990s, the mutual fund industry had grown exponentially until 1997, in which the East Asian financial
crisis (EAF) of 1997 brought a sudden halt to such a rapid development. After the EAF, the Malaysian
mutual fund trust industry has experienced a solid recovery. This can be reflected in the number of
management companies that steadily increased from 13 in the mid 1990s to 37 in the early 2000s
(Saad et al., 2010).
In line with the rapid growth of the

Psychedelic Musicians in Rock and Roll Essay
Psychedelic Musicians in Rock and Roll
In 1967 the Beatles were in Abbey Road Studios putting the finishing touches on their album Sgt.
Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band. At one point Paul McCartney wandered down the corridor and
heard what was then a new young band called Pink Floyd working on their hypnotic debut, The Piper
at the Gates of Dawn. He listened for a moment, then came rushing back. Hey guys, he reputedly said,
There s a new band in there and they re gonna steal our thunder. With their mix of blues, music hall
influences, Lewis Carroll references, and dissonant experimentation, Pink Floyd was one of the key
bands of the 1960s psychedelic revolution, a pop culture movement that emerged with American and
British rock, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The zeitgeist of the time was the final collapse of a certain kind of thinking. The seeds were sown for
feminism, for the whole notion of cyberspace, ecology, and the whole philosophy of Gaia. Suzy
Hopkins, formerly Suzy Creamcheese, a dancer and inspirational figure on the underground scene in
Los Angeles and London, remembers the visceral way psychedelic culture affected the senses. There s
a difference between a drug and a psychedelic. Drugs make you drugged and psychedelics enhance
your ability to see the truth or reality, she says. For her, LSD and music created a kind of alchemy.
When I start to dance, at a certain point, the dance takes over and the music is dancing me. Dancing is
this electric enhancement of your spine by sound. Many psychedelic bands explored this sense of
abandonment in their music, moving away from standard rock rhythms and instrumentation. The
Grateful Dead of San Francisco, for instance, created an improvisatory mix of country rock, blues, and
acid R B on albums like The Grateful Dead (1967) and Anthem of the Sun (1968), while another
Frisco band, Jefferson Airplane (fronted by the striking vocalist Grace Slick), sang of the childlike
hallucinatory delights of an acid trip in the 1967 Top Ten hit White Rabbit. In Los Angeles the
multiracial band Love played whimsical,

The Evolution Of Jerusalem As A Sacred Space
The Evolution of Jerusalem as a Sacred Space The present day Jerusalem is not only a religious center
for the three major religions Judaism, Christianity, and Islam but also one of the most disputed spaces
due to the Israeli Palestinian conflict. While the city s religious significance alone attracts enough
pilgrims to support its economy, modern Jerusalem prospers with the additional tourists intrigued by
the historical landmarks, such as the Western Wall and the Dome of the Rock. However, rather than a
miracle happened overnight, the social and economic status of Jerusalem was obtained through a
process of evolution, parts of which were recorded by the Hebrew Bible. Even though the Bible may
be a collection of narratives constructed by the ancient cultures to explain the origins of life, and thus
are more mythical than realistic, many biblical accounts are actually based on genuine historic events
and can be used for references. In the case of Jerusalem, which was merely a minor Canaanite city
state before the intrusion of the Israelites, the Bible presents evidence that the city, with its suitable
geographic characteristics, gradually developed into a sacred place of great political and religious
significance over history. In particular, two factors differentiate Jerusalem from the profane space
around it: David s choice to designate the city as the capital of the United Kingdom of Israel and
Judah, and Solomon s construction of the Temple, which housed the Ark of the

Pros And Cons Of Conscription Canada
Conscription Canada 1917
The government decided to conscript young men to the military and go overseas. The government had
no problem enlisting people in the armed forces during the beginning of World War II. iN 1916
citizens discovered the information on the conditions of the newspaper accounts. These accounts were
for wounded veterans who have not returned home yet. This caused lots of money for the newspaper
accounts because lots of families have not seen their loved ones and were willing to buy the
newspaper to find out about their significant other. Lots of canadians were given high paying war
industry jobs. As a result from this enlistment campaigns were decreasing their targets. Britain wanted

Why The Concern Over Mobile Technology
Statement of the Problem
Why the concern over mobile technology in our schools for K 12 education? Mobile technology has
expanded tremendously over the past few years. The use of having mobile devices in the classroom
allows students instant access to the latest news, information, statistics, etc. Mobile technology opens
a multitude of learning that was only accessible through encyclopedias before, but has expanded and
has endless possibilities. Many schools have a school wide wireless implementation of mobile devices
and others have limited access to wireless devices. The opportunity of instructional designers is
endless in developing more integration of technology in lesson plans to make the connections between
the old ways and with the integration of technology into the classrooms. The following literature
reviews will explore the growing trend of mobile technology in the K 12 education.
Review of the Literature
How are teachers and students using mobile technology and are they using their own devices or is the
schools providing mobile devices for teachers and students to use. Grant, Tamim, Brown, Sweeney,
Ferguson, and Jones, (2015) reviewed the early uses of mobile computing devices (MCD) in K 12
classrooms. The research questions for their study were looking at the ways K 12 teachers were using
MCDs, the supports that teachers received when using MCDs, and the barriers that existed for
teachers when using MCDs. Nine teachers were interviewed about the use of MCDs in

  • 2. Essay on Sensitive Periods in Developement Sensitive Periods in Developement The child does not grow uniformly and homogeneously like a crystal or a carrot, but by stages or phases, which succeed one another and which, differ from one another. For proper growth and development it is necessary that the potentialities for developing human relationships with which the infant is born be exposed to the organizing influences of another human being. Accumulating evidence indicates that there exist critical developmental periods during which the organism is ready for differential development, within which periods it must receive the proper stimulations if it is to develop adequately. These critical developmental periods may be broadly outlined as follows: 1) The period during ... With respect to the reality of the critical developmental periods, it is, of course, well known that such critical developmental periods exist in the development of the body, with the principle well established that the earlier the interference with their development the more widespread will the disturbance in growth be. Tissues must reach a certain stage of differentiation before they can respond; later such tissues achieve a certain relative fixity, so that they can yield. Prenatal environmental influences For many years , in fact, it was believed that the baby in the uterus was completely insulated form all outside influences, but now we know that is not entirely true. Environmental influences ranging from radioactivity and stress in the outside world to drugs, chemicals, hormones, and viruses in the mother s bloodstream can affect prenatal development. Even though the placenta acts as a filter, keeping the blood of the mother and the fetus from mixing, a number of potentially dangerous substances can pass through it. And, of course, if the ... • 3. The Oil Curse, By Michael Ross The discovery of oil in a low income country is often met with both excitement and dread. Many theories circle around the idea of a resource curse that supposedly affects countries with large amounts of resources. The resource curse essentially dictates that a country with large amounts of resources is not as likely to thrive as a country with low levels of resources. The issue with this view is that it generalizes too much; there is just as much variance in the levels of economic success between resource rich countries as there is between them and resource scarce countries. This is why this newly found oil in this country does not necessarily need to be met with dread, as there is a chance for success. However, this newly found potential for wealth needs to be handled with extreme care. In the following memo I will outline what the resource curse is, why some countries are affected by it and others not, and finally I will outline how this country should handle its newly found oil wealth. Michael Ross in his book The Oil Curse, analyzes in great detail the effects of oil on a country s economic, political, and social environment. Ross argues that resource curse is not the appropriate terminology; it is more accurately a mineral curse , as countries are generally not affected by other types of resources. (Ross, p.1) In fact, oil and natural gas tend to be the most common villains of the resource curse. Humphreys, Sachs, and Stiglitz hypothesize that countries with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Wartime Propaganda During World War II Wartime propaganda has always been a beneficial tool for warring nations. Its ability to effectively persuade, influence, and convince citizens even in a time of distress has made it a vital component of many war engaged countries. The United States, for example, reaped great benefits by using war propaganda in World War II. American propaganda helped dramatically increase the sale of war bonds, rate of civic engagement, and public morale. Although American propaganda during World War II can be considered as extremely biased and racist, it would have been more difficult to for the Americans to defeat Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany if propaganda was not used at all. Euphoric advertisements and posters were made to promote the United States and its allies strength, courage and bravery. A well known example is the 1943 poster, United We Are Strong, United We Will Win , displaying artillery guns decorated with the flags of the Allies, all firing in unison. Along with boosting morale, many enthusiastic posters also encouraged women to join the workforce and to convince their male partners that this activity was normal. As a result, the employment of women jumped 15 percent from 1941 to 1943. Unfortunately, the United States government also engaged in racism and discrimination to foster enthusiasm. Many posters and videos were created demonizing the Japanese, representing them as subhuman and animalistic. Although this type of propaganda motivated soldiers to fight by making the Japanese seem barbaric and savage, it also worsened Japanese Americans relationships on home soil. Americans started to discriminate Japanese even more, eventually forcing them out of their homes and placing them in internment camps, where they were separated from American ... She did this twice in this episode, once on the scene of the found body and again in her lab. Next we see Ryan Wolfe using soft ware that doesn t exist, have you seen the latest version of windows? Well for those of you who didn t know the government have to buy from the lowest bidder. So in order to use any high tech software like this you would need a whole lot of money. So their group would have to be privately owned by some fat cat or sponsored. The US Government always uses a soft ware that is one cycle out of production when it comes to soft ware because you don t have to worry about those oh so annoying updates. So Ryan Wolfe decrypted a deleted file, yes this is more than possible and they even show him using Command line Keywords used for Archive, Delete, Report, and Restore Requests. As a cyber security major I can tell you this is spot on accurate, so to speak. But a CSI member would not be doing this it would probably be a computer specialist and not your local CSI member. Also why would a CSI member even be looking up credit card receipts? They wouldn t, it would be a detective not Ryan Wolfe. Getting the credit card receipts of a set time period in less than twenty four hours is also farfetched. From what I was told and read, CSI rarely interrogate witnesses. • 7. Explain Why Didn T The Us Jump In To The Holocaust Zaccheaus Allen Ms. Childs English 10 17 October 2014 Why didn t the USA step in to the holocaust faster Why didn t the USA jump in the holocaust sooner? People might wonder and ask why. Well the USA was made to be one of the most powerful nations political and social. And after world war, a burial war that lost USA a lot of people, the USA signed an isolationist policy. That meant that the USA could not step in the to any other domestic conflicts. The holocaust was a genocide that killed a lot of Jews. Over 6 million. The genocide started in January 30th, 1933 when Adolf Hitler can to be general of his army going 100000 deep. After eight years, in December of 1941 the USA jumped in after years of watching to help. Before the USA jumped in to help a little under 5 million Jews were killed. After a couple million deaths they knew that they need to act and after 2 years they finaly started to talk it out. World war two was the war that stopped the genocide.it was a cold bloody war that only led to death. Over 60 million people died. That s 2.5% of the worlds population. • 8. Chocolate Syrup and Milk Introduction: We were testing the solubility of the chocolate syrup brands while being stirred in whole milk. Our purpose is to see which of the major brands of syrup is most soluble and for what reason. This is important to our daily lives because it makes us aware of what types of materials we are ingesting and this applies to our experiment by seeing which of the ingredients take longer to dissolve. Information known is all brands are known to dissolve in milk but they all use different ingredients and they will cause a difference in the time it takes to dissolve. New information that will be gained from this experiment is which ingredients inside chocolate syrup will take the longest to dissolve, from the type of sugars in it to the syrups. We expected the Nesquik to dissolve the fastest because it did not contain any high fructose corn syrup while the other brand of syrup did. Also we observed from the syrups that nesquik was very thin, while the others were very thick and slow in behaviour. Our hypothesis is that the Nesquik will disintegrate the fastest in the milk because it lacks High Fructose Corn Syrup. Materials Procedures: Materials: 1. Hershey s Chocolate Syrup 2. Nesquik Chocolate Syrup 3. Great Value Chocolate Syrup 4. Any ONE of brand whole milk 5. Little Measuring cup 6. 3 cups 7. strainer 8. spoon 9. Large bowl 10. Teaspoon measurer Procedures: 1. • 9. Slavery Is The Key For Achieving Freedom In today s society, we take many things for granted because they come easy to us. Education, in many of our lives, is something that is dreaded, something that we do only because we have to. But 200 years ago, things were much different. Slavery unfortunately existed in our society, and slaves weren t granted the gift of education. By not having an education, they were not able to completely understand their situation, and therefore unable to get out of it. Slaves had a limited option in achieving freedom, and in order to do so, they had to become educated, enough to be able to understand slavery, and they had to be religious to be able to see through the hypocrisy of the religious slaveholders. For slaves, education is the key to achieving freedom. It develops one s sense of curiosity, and allows the mind to question things, and to develop it s own ideas and opinions. For slaves, the gift of education was rare, but if one was lucky enough to have it, they began to see the true nature of slavery, and it made them more likely to try and become free. When Frederick Douglass was a young boy, he befriended a few white children who gave him a glimpse of what having an education is like. When remembering this important time in his life, he says, With their kindly aid, at different times and different places, I finally succeeded in learning to read (66 67). • 11. Torrance And Creativity Dr. Torrance and Creativity Dr. Ellis Paul Torrance was a very creative individual whose work with the aging population he has influenced program offerings at Kansas State University. The objectives of this paper include discussing Dr. Torrance s background, a reflection of his work in creativity, how his work has influenced program offerings, and how Dr. Torrance s work could impact our work with aging. Lastly, I will discuss what I have learned from studying him. Dr. Ellis Paul Torrance was born in 1915 to a farming family in rural Georgia (Childs, 2013). With further research, education, and as a counselor and psychologist in the US Army, Dr. Torrance began his life long interest and journey into creativity (Bert 2012). In 1946, after leaving the Army, Torrance started his career at Kansas State College in the counseling bureau where soon after he was transitioned into the role of Dean of Men and a few years later returned as Director of the Counseling Bureau and professor of psychology (Bert 2002). In 1951, he was appointed Director of Survival Research in the Air Force, and in1957 he developed a definition of survival creativity, whenever one is faced with a problem for which he has no practiced or learned solution, some degree of creativity is required (Millar, 1995). During his time at the Air Force, he wrote 135 research papers with his colleagues on survival and creativity and began designing creativity tests (Bert, 2002). His research studies continued and he began to publish books and more research studies(Childs, 2013). As a professor of educational psychology at the University of Georgia, he invented the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking setting the standard for measuring creativity (Bert, 2002). He also developed the Future Problem Solving Program, which is known all over the world (Bert, 2002). The storage system which does not involve the production of new compound is called sorptive storage while those which involve formation of new compound are called chemical storage. The successful thermochemical storage system is sorptive storage system that works on utilizing the heat of reaction enthalpy. Thermochemical storage has considerable benefits when compared to sensible and the latent heat thermal energy storage systems since it is easily controllable which prevents the heat loss. The features of sorptive heat storage technology enables the implementation on a large scale. Firstly, charging process of the thermochemical storage method ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The features like increased storage capacity, decreased heat loss to the environment and flexibility of heat storage over a wide range of temperatures makes the thermochemical storage system superior to other storage systems. The sorptive technology involves the absorption or adsorption of molecules through a reaction thereby storing heat. This kind of sorption system results in the formation of physical bond between the reaction pair, adsorbent (A) and adsorptive (B), which has a preferably high energy turnover. The preferred reaction is mostly reversible in order to perform many charge and discharge cycles. A + B ↔ AB + heat (see Figure 2) Figure 2: Schematic diagram of sorptive thermal energy storage technology When charging the compound, heat is applied to substance AB which dissociate into separate A and B molecule/compound. The storage is facilitated by using certain inhibitors that control the reverse reaction. To release heat, the A and B components are reacted by removal of inhibitors, ultimately favoring the reaction, resulting in the formation of compound AB and releasing heat. During this cyclic process, when the reaction between A and B is prevented, the heat which can be stored due to chemical energy cannot be released. The adsorbent such as zeolite (see Figure 3) react with water thereby act as a sorptive storage material where adsorption of water ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

An anonymous speaker starts off the poem talking about someone he met, and if they had met differently, they could ve sat down and shared a drink together and had a good time. Hardy immediately has the reader wondering what extreme event took place in the current situation in which he met the man. This first stanza and the title both help foreshadow what the meeting between these two unknown men was. Both men took a shot, and the man (the speaker) was aiming at dropped to the floor. The final stanzas talk about how the two men were one in the same, they both enlisted in the war, and both were in the infantry, the man felt as if they were the same person. The closing words of the poem open the reader s eyes about war by saying You shoot a fellow down, You d treat if met where any bar is, Or help to half a crown. Deep Ecology Essay Whether its watching a whale jump up in the air and seeing him crashing back into the water, or looking at all of the trees leafs changing colors in the fall time; nature is a beautiful thing. In the past, traditional Native Americans once cared about the land. The grass, trees, rocks, and everything else had value. Nowadays most people are moving away from these ideas and moving towards a capitalist mindset, only caring about their own personal gain. Deep ecology is defined as an environmental movement and philosophy that regards human life as just one of many equal components of a global ecosystem (Google). Almost everyone is caught up in the capitalist mentality, only caring about themselves and seeing how much money they can make. And when that happens they go out and buy more products which have negatively affected the environment. It s a vicious cycle that doesn t seem like it is coming to a stop anytime soon. • 17. Cause Of The Civil War This historical study will define the causes of the Civil War by understanding the divisive nature of the southern agrarian and northern industrial economies. In the Antebellum era, the South relied heavily on the production of cash crops, such as cotton and tobacco, that relied heavily on a plantation economy. Southern plantation owners also relied heavily on slave labor, which prevented more fluid labor markets from encouraging industrialization. Plantation owners did not want the advanced agricultural machinery used by northern industries, since the slave trade was highly profitable system of trade in and unto itself. More so, it identifies the exponential development of Northern industry, which vastly outperformed the South of economic output and military power. Of course, the South was uninterested in developing its own large industrial factories because it challenged the agrarian reliance on slave labor. This is part of the passage from slavery to contract that was causing so much strife before the Civil War, which led to open warfare between the North and the South. These irreconcilable differences were part of the continual rift between the agrarian economy of the South and the rapidly growing industrial economy during the antebellum era. The industrialization of the North was part of a diversification of the economy, which slowly abandoned the tenets of slavery in the late 18th century and into the early 19th century. However, the South continued to support an increase in slave ownership that eventually became a large scale business in the agrarian labor markets. These are important causes of the Civil War that relied heavily on the inability of the North and the South to integrate more cooperative economic relationships as a result of the conflict of slave labor and voluntary wage labor in the mid 19th ... Varda And Ozu Analysis Society and Self Service: Key Thoughts of Varda and Ozu A sound comparison one could make between Agnes Varda s and Yasujiro Ozu s masterpieces is that each presents a question key to feminist theory through the lives of their singular female protagonists: what is the effect of societal pressures on a woman finding her identity? As the titular character Cleo in Agnes Varnas Cleo a 5 de 7 rejects her role as an object of the public gaze, and Noriko of Yasujiro Ozu s Late Spring grapples with her fate to play the part of a traditional Japanese housewife, both directors explore this common concept of finding one s identity in an unkind world through the use of such themes as routines, charades and emptiness. Routines are a brief, but necessary element to both films; they establish their leading characters as seeking security in repetition of societal norms, and serve to highlight the director s signature style of camerawork in each film. For example, in reference to the title of Agnes Varda s film, Cleo expects to receive her lover at 5 p.m., repeating a behavioral convention encouraged by French society to meet one s lover at this time. She dons her wig and fluffy coat, lies on her bed in wait of her attractive but patronizing lover, and plays along with his shallow display of affection when he comes and goes as, it is implied, she has done several times before. While this whole experience was outside of my cultural norms, I found that the church service was specifically unlike anything I had ever experienced before. The church located on the campus of Mission of Hope: Haiti, was constructed in the form of a crucifix. I honestly had no idea what to expect from the Sunday morning church service. Before the church service began, my friend and her family made sure that I took my own bible and journal to church, since the message was spoken in Haitian Creole. I knew that we were in Haiti serving those who were living in poverty, but to my surprise the Haitians who attended the church service were dressed in very nice clothing. I believe this was the biggest stereotype going into the church service. After spending time in nearby villages and interacting with the Haitian people, I did not think they would have the means to have such nice clothing. I love that throughout the week they wear casual clothing and on Sundays wear their best clothing. That reminded me a lot about how I was raised. Ernest Hemingway s explores this question in his short story, Hills Like White Elephants. The story is a concise conversation between an American man and a girl. And even though he only lived until the age of 33, he accomplished what those that came before him failed to do so. The topics to be discussed are how he rose to power and what he managed to accomplish through military strategies and his cultural influence on the Persian Empire. In order to actually understand how Alexander the Great came to power, we must first explore into his background. He was born around 356 B.C.E in July within the capital city of Macedonia. When he was just a small child, he spent his time observing his father, Phillip the II, who during that time was the current leader of Macedonia. Class discussion involving Lolita tends to fall under a blanket of socially constructed presumptions that lend the discussion toward a shallow and judgmental reading of the text, and this tendency limits the discussion. Had the rest of the world missed the point? Could no one recognize the genius behind the monster? Is it possible for the average reader to grasp the ironic intentions of the author, or is Lolita forever overshadowed by the reader s need to judge and dismiss? Too often Lolita is read from only one perspective, the perspective of monstrosity. Nabokov the pornographer threatened to expose and corrupt others, particularly children, through the publication of a novel about unnatural desire (Whiting 835). The tendency is for the average reader to become entangled in a moral debate, to take opposition to the seemingly criminal and amoral acts of the narrator, to condemn him for his blatant and grotesque sin. This surface analysis of the text was prevalent at the time of publication, delaying the release of the novel in the United States by three years. Most reviews of the novel [Lolita] dealt with the narrow issue of its alleged obscenity. The novel was published three years earlier in France because Nabokov could not find an American publisher ready to risk publishing it (Tamir Ghez 65). • 38. O Connor s Short Stories, Good Country People, And A Good... Sometimes the only thing that is constant in life is change. As time passes on, people, places, and ideas are bound to change. Not only can people change, but whole societies and generations can as well. As these changes happen, the differences between generations can become very large, and this can eventually lead to conflict. In Flannery O Connor s three short stories, Everything that Rises Must Converge, Good County People, and A Good Man is Hard to Find, the gaps between generations causes problems. A skewed perspective about both the past and present causes generational conflict in these stories, and O Connor shows how this narrow mindedness can eventually lead to a catastrophic ending. Nostalgia for good country values skews the judgment of characters in O Connor s stories. In Everything That Rises Must Converge Julian s mother is an example of someone who makes a bad decision caused by her dated views on society. Even with multiple warnings from her son, she still hands a black child a condescending penny (O Connor, Everything 1090). Based on her perspective, what she is doing isn t wrong, but ... • 44. A Research Study On Mutual Fund Essay 1.0 CHAPTER ONE 1.1 Introduction A mutual fund and also known as unit trust can be defined as a form of collective investments that allows the investors which have similar investment objectives to pool their funds to be invested in a portfolio of securities or other assets. The fund managers will invest the pooled funds in the portfolio fund, particularly include some assets like cash, bonds, deposits, stocks, commodities and also properties parallel to the fund s objectives. Each investor owns shares, which represent a portion of the holdings of the fund. The mutual fund industry in Malaysia started as far back as 1959 with the advent of the Malayan Unit Trust Limited, which was launched by a group of Australian investors. The development of the industry did not take off until the 1980s after the launch of Amanah Saham Nasional (Barom, 2004). The Amanah Saham Nasional was initiated by the Malaysian Government to promote equity ownership by the indigenous population. Aided by high and consistent economic growth since the 1990s, the mutual fund industry had grown exponentially until 1997, in which the East Asian financial crisis (EAF) of 1997 brought a sudden halt to such a rapid development. After the EAF, the Malaysian mutual fund trust industry has experienced a solid recovery. This can be reflected in the number of management companies that steadily increased from 13 in the mid 1990s to 37 in the early 2000s (Saad et al., 2010). In line with the rapid growth of the ... The seeds were sown for feminism, for the whole notion of cyberspace, ecology, and the whole philosophy of Gaia. Suzy Hopkins, formerly Suzy Creamcheese, a dancer and inspirational figure on the underground scene in Los Angeles and London, remembers the visceral way psychedelic culture affected the senses. There s a difference between a drug and a psychedelic. Drugs make you drugged and psychedelics enhance your ability to see the truth or reality, she says. For her, LSD and music created a kind of alchemy. When I start to dance, at a certain point, the dance takes over and the music is dancing me. Dancing is this electric enhancement of your spine by sound. Many psychedelic bands explored this sense of abandonment in their music, moving away from standard rock rhythms and instrumentation. The Grateful Dead of San Francisco, for instance, created an improvisatory mix of country rock, blues, and acid R B on albums like The Grateful Dead (1967) and Anthem of the Sun (1968), while another Frisco band, Jefferson Airplane (fronted by the striking vocalist Grace Slick), sang of the childlike hallucinatory delights of an acid trip in the 1967 Top Ten hit White Rabbit. • 46. The Evolution Of Jerusalem As A Sacred Space The Evolution of Jerusalem as a Sacred Space The present day Jerusalem is not only a religious center for the three major religions Judaism, Christianity, and Islam but also one of the most disputed spaces due to the Israeli Palestinian conflict. While the city s religious significance alone attracts enough pilgrims to support its economy, modern Jerusalem prospers with the additional tourists intrigued by the historical landmarks, such as the Western Wall and the Dome of the Rock. However, rather than a miracle happened overnight, the social and economic status of Jerusalem was obtained through a process of evolution, parts of which were recorded by the Hebrew Bible. Even though the Bible may be a collection of narratives constructed by the ancient cultures to explain the origins of life, and thus are more mythical than realistic, many biblical accounts are actually based on genuine historic events and can be used for references. In the case of Jerusalem, which was merely a minor Canaanite city state before the intrusion of the Israelites, the Bible presents evidence that the city, with its suitable geographic characteristics, gradually developed into a sacred place of great political and religious significance over history. In particular, two factors differentiate Jerusalem from the profane space around it: David s choice to designate the city as the capital of the United Kingdom of Israel and Judah, and Solomon s construction of the Temple, which housed the Ark of the ...
