On July 7, 2015 the EPA and MARN inspected the REPSA I facility, including the oxidation lagoon
treatment system. This wastewater treatment system treats the wastewater generated from REPSA I
palm tree oil processing. The system consists of five oxidation lagoons, which included cooling
stabilization lagoons, anaerobic (an anaerobic lagoon is a deep impoundment, essentially free of
dissolved oxygen that promotes anaerobic conditions (USEPA 2002)), and facultative lagoons, with
each lagoon having a volume of approximately 3,500 m3 (925,000 gallons). A facultative lagoon is
earthen impoundment that the layer of water near the surface contains dissolved oxygen due to
atmospheric reaeration and algal respiration, a condition that supports aerobic and facultative
organisms, and the bottom layer of the lagoon includes sludge deposits and supports anaerobic
organisms (USEPA, 2002). EPA observed that all lagoons were not sealed (no concrete, liner, clay,
etc.), which may create suitable conditions for groundwater contamination.
During the EPA visit, it was observed that the REPSA I lagoons were almost full to capacity, with a
free board of approximately one foot (0.3 meters) (See photo 1, page 17). Typically, lagoons should
have a minimum freeboard of 0.9 meters (3 feet) (USEPA, 2002). The minimum freeboard design

As everyone has a story of their journey, my story begins as a child growing up in a traditional
Hispanic/Latino home in a south suburb of Chicago. At a young age, I recognized that I viewed life
differently in comparison to my peers, siblings and parents. My thought process was very logical,
which helped me make rational decisions. It was not often that I made choices according to my
emotions and feelings, but rather choices of what I thought would benefit me in the long run.
However, many of my choices and protests that I did make were against the norm within my
traditional Hispanic/Latino home, gender roles, and religious beliefs. As I reviewed my Life Story
Board, I was able to identify different stages of my childhood/adolescence/teens were I had either a
negative, or a negative/positive experience due to the challenges and consequences of my logical

In The Epic of Gilgamesh, there are female characters who influence the timeline of events in the
story. Ishtar, the goddess of love and Shamhat, a sacred prostitute, both played important roles
throughout the epic. In this ancient story, women not only represent astuteness and dominion, but also
deceit and destruction. These women could both use their sexuality and deceitfulness to influence the
decisions and the lives of the men they encountered. Without these women interfering with the lives of
the major characters in this epic, this story would have a different outcome.
In the beginning of the epic, Enkidu is described as a wild and untamed man. Enkidu never learned
how to be civilized, for he lived in the wild for most of his life. Shamhat, a sacred temple prostitute,
was sent to encounter Enkidu and try to tame him through a sexual relationship. She succeeded and

Gilgamesh quickly denied this proposition and told Ishtar that she is devious and self absorbed. He
also stated that Ishtar has inflicted dangerous and repulsive acts on her once lovers. With this, Ishtar
became furious and she ran to her father, complained about Gilgamesh, and begged him to let her have
the Bull of Heaven to destroy Gilgamesh and Enkidu. Gilgamesh, being a mighty warrior, spared no
time in killing the bull. Ishtar then ran to the wall of Uruk and cried, that bully Gilgamesh who
