her father a businessman. During her senior year in 1941, Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, and Uchida,
along with other Japanese Americans, were sent to relocation camps. She worked as a teacher while
attending the camp. Despite the embarrassment and agony of her past, Uchida created profound stories

progress because I always arrive on time to my classes or work; follow any directions from my
professors or employers, and follow ethics that influence my professional behavior towards other
individuals. These ideas and ethics will benefit me in the future because it will satisfy the
requirements of employers and will assist me in to obtaining promotions. Professionalism and success
is what humans need to survive in modern society. As you read, you will need a basic understanding
of ethics and what do they propose towards professionalism. My ethics allowed me to be a great
example of student success because every day is one step closer to my educational goals. In order to
reach my educational goals, I must follow three simple expectations; arrive on time to class and work
to be prepared for assignments and tasks provided by the professor or supervisor. When I follow my
ethics, it allows me to behave professionally and accomplish my responsibilities as they come and go.
For professional behavior, my definition for student success has now expanded beyond the

Imagery, Diction, and Tone in Roethke s Root Cellar
How can an atmosphere be so unbearable and cold, but evidently full of life and constant growth? Set
in an old, decaying basement, Theodore Roethke addresses this in the poem Root Cellar. Life is
clinging to and climbing over the dirty, damp, and dark possessions of the cellar. Why is it possible
that so much life is present in such a place of shadows? In Root Cellar , Roethke uses imagery,
diction, and tone to display that is possible for life to overcome unbearable circumstances suggesting
that nature is a truly dominant and powerful force.
First, Roethke uses a variety of natural imagery to illustrate the poor conditions of the root cellar. The
imagery is extremely concrete, which is illustrated through the use of sensory language. By being
inside the cellar, multiple senses are engaged, which ranges from smells, sights, and surfaces to touch.
Roethke writes that there were a congress of stinks (6) and then proceeds to explain them as roots ripe
as old bait (7) and leaf mold, manure, lime (9); the sensory imagery here reveals that the root cellar is
not only unpleasant to the eye, but the nose as well. Additionally, sensory imagery, such as the phrase
slippery planks (9) reveals that one might not want to get too close to the scene. However poor the

Palm oil is an essential ingredient we all use in our every day lives. This product is mostly
manufactured in Africa, Southeast Asia, or Brazil. It s used in shampoo, baked goods, cleaning
substances, or even toothpaste ( What s the issue , n.d.). As you can tell all of these are used daily,
palm oil isn t just only a crop used for certain little things, it s used in every ones life all the time.
In this paper I ll be showing the two sides of palm oil. Where animals such as orangutans are
becoming endangered because of the production of the oil. Also the making of palm oil is what keeps
our world a content place, along with providing jobs for those who need it. Overall, this paper will

centered. I grew up in a relatively poor family in Oregon that did what they could to care for my two

These times were not extremely pleasant as my father continued to abuse my eldest brother and
eventually it started to transfer to my other brother and myself; however, we made the most of what
we had at the time. There were some good memories of the ranch we lived on; what child does not

a fair trial. During the 1930s, America was in a time of very serious segregation. If a black man
