Jane Seymour, Queen of England and King Fernando
Title: Jane Seymour, Queen of England on January 29 1536, Anne Boleyn, King Henry VIII s wife
had a miscarriage at Hampton Court Palace and four months later was sentenced to death on the
charge of unfaithfulness. the day before, the king became engaged to Jane Seymour. she had come to
court in 1530 and served her two predecessors as lady inwaiting. she died in October 1537 while
giving birth to the heir of the throne. she was the only wife of the king that was buried together with
Henry at Windsor castle. Hans Holbein had made a career for himself and had lived in London since
1532 and was appointed court painter to the English Monarch in 1536, the year of the royal wedding.
the one tone background of the painting is a concession to the interests of the court portrait. holbein
convinced the court that such portraits with a flatness to it gives them a formal character. in the piece,
Jane Seymour s jewelry, her garment, and her slightly pale features are focussed in a even light and
presented in every detail a very old fashioned technique that had superseded by full tone chiaroscuro

Purpose Statement For Diabetes
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
According to International Diabetes Federation, approximately 592 million people worldwide would
be suffering from diabetes by 2035 and this would be a major economic burden to the society globally.
Detail knowledge of normal physiological processes at cellular and molecular level will give me a
better understanding in dealing with pathological conditions in human body. Insight of the structure
and function of organelles, chemical composition of enzymes, hormones, their interaction and
expression in structural and functional unit of life can significantly help in bringing down morbidity
and mortality associated with metabolic disorders like diabetes and various other diseases. Grown up
in a family of medical professionals, the curiosity to explore various life processes was not only
acquired but also inherent. I want to take a leap forward of what my parents and grandparents practice
and Cell and Molecular Physiology or Immunology as major will surely make me accomplish in
achieving my aim of life.
As a small child, I had seen the agony of patients and limitations of medical profession in dealing with
various illnesses. I had innumerable queries which were beyond my capability to understand ... Show

Therefore, this study attempt to provide some viewpoints, and empirical results to understand this

core competencies within the researched companies. 4. Investigating the role of core competencies in
achieving competitive advantage fore the researched companies. 3. Literature Review 3.1. Core
Competence Much of the research on competitive advantage focused on core competencies as a major
source of that advantage, core competencies include the particular set of skills and resources affirm
possesses as well as the way those resources are used to produce outcomes (Fiol, 2001). The concept
of core competence, as fundamental to organizational renewal and as a driving force behind strategic
change, interests both managers and scholars. It is a complex and challenging concept: it is difficult to
specify theoretically, to identify empirically as a phenomenon, and to apply in practice. Scholars have
recently recognized these problems in general conceptual discussions (Hafsi and Thomas, 2005) and
in core competence specific empirical research (Wang et al., 2004). Competencies are commonly
agreed to reside in individuals and teams of individuals, implying that the competence concept
involves a cumulative hierarchy. This cumulative hierarchy notion is evident in many streams of
research concerning the

How Reiki Is Considered As A Form Of Healing Essay
This assignment evaluates the topic of reiki, which is considered as a form of healing. To begin, it
provides a definition and highlights reiki s application in mainstream medicine. This forms scientific
assumptions of the use of the scientific method. This highlights credibility, methodology and
reliability as a precursor of application to public health. As a result, it firstly demonstrates credibility
through the process of gathering scientific facts from reliable sources. Journals are found using the
British Psychological Society (BPS) and PsycINFO. This subsequently provides empirical research
for critical review. Secondly, it explores methodology from a selection of these journals. It includes
the necessity of operational definitions, value and measurement, and construct validity. Finally, it
therefore demonstrates the reliability of results as scientific data, to infer robust conclusions. This will
provide the basis of the argument to evaluate if reiki is science or pseudoscience. Reiki Application
Firstly, reiki is described as an ancient Japanese form of therapeutic healing (Baldwin, Rand Schwartz,
2013; Baldwin, Wagers Schwartz, 2008; Cuneo et al., 2011; Diaz Rodriguez et al., 2011; Richeson,
Spross, Lutz Peng, 2010; Shore, 2004). Its efficacy claims to improve human welfare a shared
perspective of many science applications (Anderson, 1998). Its mechanism is theorised as a natural

Descriptive Essay About Ice Cream
On Monday, May 22, 2017, my mother and I visited the Museum of Ice Cream. The museum isn t
your typical museum, there wasn t much about the history of ice cream or why it was made, it was
more of an interactive art museum. There are ten different galleries in the museum with gigantic ice
cream themed art. These rooms include, a gummy bear themed room, a banana split room, a chocolate
mint room, a melting popsicle room, and more. Almost every room came with samples of ice cream
and candies, it was absolutely magic! In contrast, the drive there was not quite as magical. The
museum is in downtown Los Angles where there was a lot of traffic, especially because we were
scheduled to go at 5:30 p.m. As my mom and I were driving up, I was questioning what we were
getting into because it was an industrial area, then, we pulled up to this bright pink building and that
was when I began to get excited. Once we got there, we were a little early, we went just outside the
museum where there was a little waiting area complete with ice cream themed connect four and a
huge Jenga. Once it was time for us to enter the museum, we waited in line for a worker from the
museum to scan our ticket and I was elated. Then, another worker from the museum came out from
inside and showed us through the giant glass doors into the museum. When we first entered, we were
told to reach inside an ice cream cart and grab a handful of chocolate. We were then led to a room

Secretary of Education Recommendation Paper
DaWayne D. Nettles
Columbia College
2015
The Secretary of Education report charts the future of United States higher education and outlines
various recommendations to improve it. As higher education evolves in unexpected ways, this new
landscape demands innovation and flexibility from the institutions that serve the nation s learners. The
recommendations mentioned include assess, cost and affordability, financial aid, learning,
transparency and accountability, and finally innovation. One of the most significant recommendations
that needs to definitely be address is the issue of cost and affordability of higher education.
The way higher education is being financed is becoming increasingly dysfunctional. State
appropriations are declining; educational cost is rising; and cost per student is increasing faster than
inflation or family income. Affordability is directly affected by a financing system that provides
limited incentives for colleges and universities to take aggressive steps to improve institutional
efficiency and productivity. Public worry about increasing expenses might eventually add to the
disintegration of open trust in higher education. Only through reform can confidence in higher
education in America be renewed. The Secretary of Education s report states that America must ensure
that our citizens have access to high quality and affordable educational, learning, and training
opportunities throughout

Essay on Clinical Uses of Electroencephalogram
CLINICAL USES OF ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAM
An electroencephalogram (EEG) is actually a test to measure the electrical activity of the brain as
recorded from electrodes placed on the scalp. A routine clinical EEG recording typically lasts 20 30
minutes (plus preparation time). An EEG can tell us if there is abnormal electrical activity in the brain
and, in some cases, the types of seizures that someone might be going through. One of the most
common EEG applications is to show the type and location of the activity in the brain during a
seizure. This information can then be used for making the right diagnosis. EEG also useful in the
investigation and management of patients with epilepsy. The presence of epileptiform activity in the

Nevertheless, the EEG reflects the function of the brain and is therefore a complement, rather than an
inconsequential alternative, to these newer procedures. The third major use of electroencephalography
is in the investigation of patients with certain neurologic disorders that produce characteristic EEG
abnormalities which, although nonspecific, help to suggest, establish, or support the diagnosis. These
abnormalities are exemplified well by the repetitive slow wave complexes sometimes seen in herpes
simplex encephalitis, which should suggest this diagnosis if the complexes are found in patients with
an acute cerebral illness. The electrical findings are best regarded as one more physical sign, however,
and as such should be evaluated in conjunction with the other clinical and laboratory data. A further
use of electroencephalography one that may increase in importance with the development of
quantitative techniques for assessing the data that are obtained is in the screening or monitoring of
patients with metabolic disorders, because it provides an objective measure of the improvement or
deterioration that may precede any change in the clinical state of the patient. Electroencephalography
is also an important means of evaluating patients with a change in

Adolfo Kaminsky saved almost 10,000 children by creating counterfeits of legal documents through a
Jewish resistance network he was recruited to in France. While all the Jews were in danger of being
captured, those who assisted them were too. Coming from a background of Russian Jews and being
born in Argentina, he was also part of the misery. He along with millions of Jews were sent to
concentration camps, however Adolfo and his family were rescued, due to the papers that they had
from Argentina. Each of their passports came from Argentina, resulting in the government fighting for
their protection. They were held hostage in a concentration camp for months, but due to these papers
they were allowed to leave, while others walked towards their death. Being grateful for the blessings
that god has given to his family, he became a god for the other Jewish children. His selfless acts
rescued thousands of Jews from their despair, however he was dissatisfied with the fact that he did not
have the ability to help any more Jewish children. Kaminsky once said The smallest error and you

Wastewater treatment systems are very important to providing clean, drinkable water to its
surrounding societies. These systems also help in the removal of contaminants in wastewater from
household sewage, runoff, domestic, commercial and institutional units. Processes include physical,
chemical and biological manipulation of contaminants to neutralize their effects on the human body
for consumption. There are three main types of treatment, primary, secondary and tertiary, all of which
have separate units and processes that flow in an organized manner to ultimately end up with recycled
potable water.
First in primary treatment the sewage is temporarily held in a quiescent basin where heavy solids
settle to the bottom while other contaminants such as oil, grease and lighter solids float to the top.
Commonly used procedures involve bar screens with washer compactors that remove a majority of
non fine solid material waste. Other airs is added to settle solids for grit removal. Fine screens as also
used to capture the finer waste material that flows through the primary larger hole bar screens. They
can often have two different sizes of bar screens that help in removing as much sold material waste
before moving onto secondary treatment. The finer screens are used to capture plastics that come into
the system.
Secondary treatment removes dissolved material and biological matter that is suspended between the
top and bottom of the tank. Secondary treatment involves the use of

The Mill On The Floss
In George Eliot s The Mill on the Floss, one of the long, resounding themes of the novel is the nature
of love and how it changes people over time. While a loving nature is generally regarded as a noble if
not redeemable trait in literary characters, especially in Victorian literature where the idea of marrying
for love was gaining popularity, protagonist Maggie Tulliver subverted that idea. It was because of
Maggie s all consuming familial love for her brother Tom, platonic love for Philip, and romantic love
for Stephen that directly caused her ultimate downfall and death.
At the heart of the novel, Maggie s relationship with her older brother Tom was without a doubt the
most important in her life. The two were incredibly close as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

To be fair, Tom was a child who had just found out his pets were killed, so it s understandable that he
would be angry and lash out. However, this was the first of many times throughout the novel that
Maggie displease Tom in some way, be swiftly and harshly punished for it, and return to Tom
wholeheartedly whenever it suited him to apologize.
The next time that the two siblings fought was the infamous pastry debacle, in which Tom had stolen
two pastries for them to share and let Maggie decide who would get the bigger one. Maggie insisted
that he take the bigger pastry, but Tom countered by telling her it was alright for her to take it. He then
seethed in anger as they ate together when she did indeed take the prefered pastry and he called her
greedy. Tom s motivations for doing this are never made entirely clear. Was it a trick question? Was he
testing Maggie to see if she would still put him first even when he said not to? But that was the trick,
that she thought she was being respectful and putting Tom first by taking his permission to accept the
larger pastry for herself. Maggie could never seem to win with Tom because of his strange logic and
sense of justice, and their strained relationship finally boiled over in childhood when she ran away to
live with gypsies anything to not have to deal with Tom s disappointingly on again, off again

What Constitutes An Artifact Of Empire
What constitutes an artifact of empire
Structures that memorialize the nation s imperial gains and losses
Introduction
Public monuments and literature share a lot in common. At first sight, it might be difficult to relate
one to the other. However, deeply embedded in them they share a motif: an imagined community.
They embrace a sense of belonging; they represent a nation or an empire.
It is physically impossible for a person to meet every one of his fellow nationals; time and space
prevents it. So how can that person know that there are actually millions like him inside a given
country s borders? By representation. That representation can come in different ways. Two of them are
memorials and literature.
More so, the imagined community ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dracula depicts London as the brain of the British Empire, a centre that could be invaded by
contamination and disease. In this way, Dracula was used to ignite fears among the British people. If
compared to the over use of terrorism threats by George W. Bush and other political figures, leading
powers and empires feed off fears. Fearful population usually accept drastic measures to continue their
domination, and Dracula is a figure of that: how fear was used to continue the domination of the
British Empire. As with terrorism, Dracula is an external threat, an imagined enemy whose promise is
to destroy an empire. Dracula is feared economically in a period where capitalism was emerging and
where dominance over colonies was of utmost importance. Dracula´s voyage to the west, to London
not only the capital of the British Empire but the capital of the financial world , threatens to alter
economic power balances. This can be seen today in London, for example, with the threat of the Greek
economic crisis. Economic fear still haunt the streets of

My Favorite Memory Research Paper
Music has always been a big part of my life. It has gotten me through the funnest of times and the
hardest. My mom would incourage us to listen and express ourselves through the music we heard
playing around us. My older sister used to sing to my little sister and I all the time and even got us
involved. We would perform little shows where we would sing and dance for my mom after work.
Pots and pans were the drums, we used a cardboard box and rubberbands to make a guitar, and we had
a little toy microphone for the lead singer. I remember Respect by Aretha Franklin was always our
favorite. We had a lot of sass and that song is all about the sass. To this day, that is one of my favorite

Elements Of The CIA Triad
Confidentiality, integrity and availability also commonly known as the CIA triad, is a security guide to
keep information safe in organisations. The three elements of the triad are considered the most crucial
component of information security. Confidentiality is very similar to privacy of data; it is put in place
in order to prevent important and sensitive data from falling into the wrong hands, whilst at the same
time making sure it is available to the people that actually need it and are authorised to it. Data can
sometimes be categorised in accordance to the type and amount of damage that could be done if the
information was to fall in the wrong hands. Certain employees will be responsible for different data
this way only selected people are allowed to view and modify this information. This means that if
anything was to go wrong they would know who it is as it is only a select few people. If organisations
did not comply with this rule then this would enable anyone one to view and modify information they
should not have access to. This could cause a negative reputation for the organisation if anything was

affect the organisations reputation because if they are giving wrong information it will look bad on

equipment, and repaired broken equipment from sun up until sun down. To make this even worse, all
day the wind blew fiercely towards our trenches forcing us to endure the horrific stench of the soldiers
who have lost their lives in no man s land. I feel so horrible for the families of those lost brothers of
mine. They will never have the opportunity to give their sons, husbands, fathers, and brothers a proper
burial. It can get depressing here in these trenches as I do nothing but stare at the sky for hours on end

We are positioned at the point where the River Aisne and River Oise meet. We know that holding our
ground is important because if some how they were to break through our trenches here they would
have clear access to Chantilly and then they would move to our most beloved city, Paris. Although we
know that holding our ground is very important, we had hoped for a chance to drive those nasty
Germans back to where they came from. The day started slow, the sleep I longed for had eluded me as
normal. Being tired in battle was no good thing, and almost no one on our side got much sleep.
Thankfully, we re sure no one on the other side got much sleep either. In the wee hours of the morning
before daybreak we prepared for battle. I had all those feelings rushing back to me; scared, anxious,
excited, and nervous. Once we felt we were ready we all quickly headed for our posts. There was no
good way to fight a battle in these trenches. Whoever got chosen to attempt an attack was almost
surely dead as soon as the orders were sent. Running across no man s land was one of the most
treacherous tasks we ever had. I have only been sent out twice, luckily both times I have been able to
retreat back to our trenches safely after our job was done. Both sides ran at each other like this all day
during battles. As you can tell this hardly lead to any good as hundreds died and only feet were gained
if you were lucky. Today was no different, we engaged in this same type of warfare for hours. I saw
fellow soldiers die attempting to cross to the German s side, and I even personally pulled the trigger

Gullah Culture
South Carolina is known for many of its historical customs and treasures, one of them being the
Gullah language and culture which has become a consistent characteristic of the Carolina coast and

residents who still identify and participate in it, and the presence of Gullah is a center of interest for
those who travel to the sea islands of Charleston and Hilton Head to observe and learn more about it.
While Gullah is spoken by at least 300,000 African Americans in coastal regions across South

people who have remained in the low country region to the present day and continue with their
traditional Gullah language and culture to one extent or another. (Campbell). These peoples vary in
their degree of immersion in the Gullah culture, but still remain in the area in which the Gullah
language and lifestyle have been preserved since the days of slavery. The second circle, Modern
Gullahs , are separated into two groups. One group includes Gullahs who have remained in the low
country of South Carolina, but have lost their use of the language and culture. The second group is
made up of those who have retained their use of the Gullah language and culture, but live away from
their homeland. So, for example, there are many Gullah speaking families who live in Northeastern
cities such as New York, but send their children back to the southern coast so that the connection with
their traditions remains intact. The third circle of Gullah descendants is called Gullah Family . This
group is also separated into two different groups. The primary group including those who have lost

The Importance Of Western Culture And Punjabi Culture
A constant struggle of incorporating western mentality and remaining true to my Punjabi culture has
been at the root of many dilemmas throughout my life and has caused me to engender my own set of
values, which reflect a unique blend of western culture and Punjabi culture. As a future marriage and
family therapist who will be assessing a diverse population, I foresee this amalgamation becoming an
issue when I receive clients who come from a similar background and have a certain expectation of
what I should say, or when I receive clients who come from a different background and have different
values than I do. If one is not consciously aware of these values and biases, then it is very likely that
these concerns will impede the therapeutic relationship and the work of the therapist. For instance,
Punjabi culture emphasizes parents sacrificing their own happiness for their children s happiness,
which can be seen via parents not getting a divorce for a child s happiness. I have seen the latter occur
many times, even in instances where the parents cannot stand one another. Growing up I understood
this mentality, because I had witnessed my American friends going through turmoil when finding out
their parents were getting a divorce. At the time, I believed that the parents were selfish, that they were
not considering what this would do to their child. Additionally, my family had also pushed forth this
value in our home, even in instances where my aunts were living with alcoholic

hopeless attempt to defend themselves from a vast enemy.
In this country s great history, there have been many important expeditions, discoveries, and wonders.
One of the most famous and important expeditions in this country s history is that of Lewis and Clark.
Within their great journey, the two men met countless obstacles, met many new and intriguing
cultures, and saw some of the most incredible land that God had ever made. After the purchase of the
Louisiana Territory from France, President Thomas Jefferson commissioned Meriwether Lewis and
William Clark to lead an expedition on a journey to explore the headwaters of the Missouri River and
find an overland route to the Pacific Ocean by way of the Columbia River. By August 31, 1803, Lewis
and his party were under way down the Ohio River to meet up with Clark and his group. Together,
their group, known as the Corps of Discovery, departed from Camp DuBois near Wood River, Illinois,
on May 14, 1804, and proceeded up the Missouri River using a keelboat and two pirogues. By late
fall, the party reached the Knife River Indian Villages near present day Washburn, North Dakota.
There they built Fort Mandan and spent a

The Hay Wain Analysis
A1: Initial thoughts Viewing John Constable s painting The Hay Wain makes me appreciate that there
were established artists in early 19th century. The painting is one of the most studied and sought after
in the world and viewing it allows me to understand why majority of people are interested with it
(Wikimedia Commons, 2017). The painting evokes a feeling of naturalness and allowed me to connect
with the painter s point of view. Constable was trying to showcase his country side as a natural green
place and viewing the painting it is evident he achieved this. The aim of visual arts is to help the artist
to communicate a particular aspect that the audience can relate with. The Hay Wain uses magnificent
colors and texture that not only attracts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the recent past, people abandoned the countryside to live in the urban areas (Western Governors
University, 2017). In fact, most of the people in the developed countries are unaware of how the
countryside looks like. Due to development and pollution, the natural sceneries are dying slowly. In
this regard, the Hay Wain is important in today s world as it helps the generations that does not
understand the countryside. The art allows the current generation to know how nature looked like in
the early 19th century. Apart from learning, the art is important in urging the current generation to
protect the environment and be mindful of the natural habitats. This is because a look at the art makes

Building A Room Decorating Ideas
Modern Room Decorating Ideas : How to Choose Wall Artwork
Great art can elevate a space, bring together an interior house design and add interest to a room. Art
work in your home can also communicate your style to your guests and speak to your personal
experience. However, choosing art pieces for your home can be daunting when you have no
experience in room design. Luckily, we have compiled a list of room decorating ideas that will help
you choose the right artwork for your home and its many spaces.
Don t Settle
When looking for the right pieces to fill your living room, bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen and foyer, do
not settle. Above all else, it is advisable to get out and see what s out there. Art exists in galleries, at
auctions, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Think About Your Space
Are you decorating your living room, home office, or bedroom? Spend time in the space and select the
most important and visible walls in those rooms. These walls should be considered the focal points of
your design. When choosing art for these spaces, consider the size that art will need to be in order to
take up enough visual space.
Match the size and shape of the pieces to the walls. For instance, if you have a long horizontal wall,
hang a long horizontal piece of art. In the same space, you could also hand a collection of pieces in
order to take up more horizontal space. By accentuating the height or length of the wall, you will be
making the room feel larger.
Choosing Art For Your Bedroom
When choosing art for your bedroom, it is important that you consider what it is you would like to get
out of the space. Is your bedroom a place of rest, a place to unwind, or a place for romance? The style
and mood of the art you choose should be in line with your overall plans for your bedroom space.
Because art is such an emotive tool, it is particularly important in your bedroom that the colors of the
art displayed help accomplish your bedroom s overarching theme. For example, red is the color of
passion, and although a painting that uses a large swathe of red is great for a room designated for
romance, it may not be well suited in a room designated for relaxation.

The Pre-Confederation Period and the Confederation Period
Canada is a constitutional monarchy and a liberal democracy. As a member of G 8 it is one of the most
industrialized nations in the world and holds a very important position in reference to the world
economy.
Territorially Canada was not always the same. It went through changes to evolve in the form it is
today. The Canada of today was earlier in the form of various British colonies. The region was not
united and they joined hand with the passage of time. The history of Canada can be divided roughly
into two factions: the pre confederation period and the confederation period.
The pre confederation period is the period prior to the unification of Canada. Before the advent of
Europeans, Canada had no single unified government or administration. The only kind of politics was
the treaties signed among the regions or tribes. At the same time, the local leaders or head of the tribes
were the only form of government known to the people. Canada turned into a series of colonies with
the arrival of the Europeans. Various regions were colonized by different nations of Europe like
Britain, France and even Spain. All the colonies which form Canada were once a part of New France.
The British acquired those colonies by the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 and by the Treaty of Paris in
1763.
The Canada, as we know today, took its shape in 1867 with the signing of the British North America
Act. This Act created a single unified administration for the whole region. The regional interests were

History essay Using these four passages and your own...
History essay Using these four passages and your own knowledge, asses the view that Japan was
driven into war with the western powers in 1941 by American policies. Both interpretations B and D
prove that America was the only driving force that caused a war in the Pacific. The oil embargo that
America enforced in 1940 was an incentive for Japan, a country very reliant on imports of which most
primarily came from America feeding its daily usage of 12,000 tons of oil,to declare war on the
country that was slowing its progress to conquer China. Interpretation B states that moderates and
militants alike saw American pressure as provocative thus creating a tension in the Pacific, with the

However American concern for the safety of Asia would ultimately lead to a war in the Pacific and
Japanese hostility was solely to blame. Interpretation D also shows Japan s aggression being sparked
by American decisions. For example America, most of all, stood in the way stood in the way of this
through their control of resources in South East Asia. America s grip on all vital resources in the
Pacific would have driven Japan to war as it was the only alternative to stop America whilst still
keeping control over China. The leading philosophies of the time, assumed that acquiring an empire
provided the basis of prosperity and future national security. This on the other hand contradicts the
interpretation as it presents Japan as an empire with clear instructions on how to achieve wealth
through imperialism. This is shown throughout the passage where by the time the war in China began
in 1937 politicians favouring expansionism were in high offices of state. America is no longer the only
reason that war began as the views of the leaders in 1937 were evidently expansionist. Japan does not
want any relations with America as in the eyes of Japan s leaders that would have entailed a colossal
loss of prestige with incalculable internal consequences. Japan and the US both operated with an
imperialist mindset, but Japan government had mishandled the position they found themselves in

Australia is a highly urbanized country, with most of the population living in the city. Out of the 23

Population growth continuous to be prominent in inner cities and outer suburbs. Australian major
cities play a key function for the national economy. However the increase in urbanization and

The Burden And Blessing Of Mortality
Mortality has always been a difficult subject to discuss within the public sphere. People, more often
than anything else, fear death so greatly that they avoid this topic all together. Perhaps it is the
unknown factor about the afterlife (or lack thereof) that so petrifies people, causing them to distract
themselves from a serious debate on the effects of mortality to our earth. Hans Jonas writes in The
Burden and Blessing of Mortality about the universal advantage of human mortality and the perceived
burdens of it as well. Like Jonas, I will argue that mortality is a beneficial concept in the realm of
external issues like preserving our earth s resources, and internal issues like existential meaning and
motivation. Diametrical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is one interesting consequence to the potential execution of this idea, and it deals mainly with
psychosis. When it s phrased as immortality people see it as a remarkable idea that would reverse
depression and emotional pain. On the contrary, this is likely to bolster elements like this. If we are
constantly, figuratively standing still it is going to lead to far greater mental disabilities and issues than
the ones we see today. Jonas believes that the concept of defeating death is wrong from the beginning,
and it comes from a palpable confusion of what life is. Living and dying are interwoven together, he
thinks. Each is a different side to the same procedure. Life reiterates itself as important, but can only
do this since it is contested. The whole nature of value enters into the world through living and dying
(Jonas, p. 36). Another point outlines how evolution would be impossible without death. Neither
component would progress in any way. The process of death plays an inventive role. It celebrates
uniqueness and variety, and the greater type of life s subjectivity. Jonas asserts that with dying we
allow room for future life. Birth exists because dying exists, and the arrival of fresh life has significant
value in itself. It permits us to see the world for the first time, see things with new eyes, wonder where
others are dulled by habit, and start out from where they had

mains?
Developing a single programming language for all programming domains would be extremely
difficult and would require a method of logic unlike anything currently available because number of
domains have different requirements, different characteristics and criteria. It would also be quite a feat
to combine a functional language with an imperative language since by definition they are nearly
opposites. Scientific applications require features found in other languages, but FORTRAN is suited to

center of trade . Most trade routes were all passing through and dependent on India. Indian emphasis
on trade and merchant activity was far more than in China, and also greater in the classical
Mediterranean world. During the Maurya rule, India expanded their trade between the main centers of
civilization Eurasia and Africa. Some products produced at one end of the system, such as Chinese
silks and porcelains, were carried the whole length of the trading networks to be sold at the other end
of the routes, in Rome. As a result, China and India both had to work together and figure out a way to

Social classifications and expectations between classical china and classical India were very similar to

political rights, to their religious beliefs, and who they would marry.

Archetypal Patterns In Little Miss Sunshine And As I Lay...
Characters in stories follow archetypal patterns, whether it is something as simple as hero vs. villain,
or something more elaborate like a scapegoat or a rake. In the movie Little Miss Sunshine we follow
the Hoover family on their quest to fulfill self motivated goals, similar to that of the novel As I Lay
Dying by William Faulkner. In the novel, Faulkner sets up the premise for one of the most widely
accepted journey plots in literature, and the archetypal themes are carried over into the movie Little

With a primary goal in mind, they must reach California in order for Olive to compete in the pageant
similar to the goal set in mind of the Bundrens (Arndt). Using the model that As I Lay Dying puts for
the journey archetype, Little Miss Sunshine follows a similar flow of journey, obstacle, and repeat.
The first real obstacle that the Hoovers encounter is their car breaking down. Similar to the loss of the
wagon that the Bundrens suffered at the river, their means of transportation is sabotaged. While the
Hoover s solution was much simpler, just having to push [the car] up to ten, fifteen miles an hour to
get the transmission into gear, the obstacle that was placed in front of them was still big enough to
cause them a delay on their time sensitive quest (Arndt). The modern idea of poverty is also another
big obstacle that the Hoovers must overcome. Coming from a lower class family, their car breaks

Having to resort to drastic measures, most of their decisions aren t thought through very carefully and
are instead sporadic and on the spot. Being virtually broke, Richard has to juggle his personal and

why Rhoda Brooks is thin and fading when she is not very old. We as readers, want to find out the

Point Of Literature Essay
The point of literature
Personally, I think the point of literature is entirely subjective. Even the definition of literature can be
interpreted differently. In class just now, it was defined as written works with artistic value, which I
agree with to some extent, but then again, what does and doesn t constitute as artistically valuable is
also subjective. I feel like I m on a fast track to my history and philosophy class here, being all like
everything is subjective, nothing is real . The point, the purpose, the goal of literature can be so many
things. In earlier human evolution, the Homo Sapiens ability of more advanced communication than
that of other animals, the way we evolved to understand and communicate not only the tangible reality
of our surroundings (after all, the Neanderthal could do this too), but also perceive and deal in

Apart from the evolutionary advantage of the societal bonds that it creates and enforces, literature is
just yet another channel for humans to channel its unusual knack for creativity. Love of writing could
also be the point of literature. Or, on the other hand, love of reading. Or a conduit for expression, or
knowledge, or reverence. Or a million other things. There s no single, lone point to the art form of
written works. Just like most of literature itself, the point probably lies in each person s own
interpretation of it. Or maybe that s just my

Lab Report 9 Bleach Oxidation Essays
Bleach Oxidation of 9 Hydroxyfluorene
The purpose of this experiment was to oxidize an alcohol (9 hydroxyfluorene) to a ketone (9
fluorenone) using aqueous sodium hypochlorite (bleach) as the oxidizing agent, while introducing
techniques used in microscale experiments.
Reaction:
Results
1. Recrystallized Product Yield
Product yield = (actual yield/theoretical yield) x 100%
3mL 9 hydroxyfluorene x (1mL/1000mL) x (0.09 mol/L) = 2.7 x 10 4 moles
0.05g 9 fluorenone / (180.20g/mol) = 2.77 x 10 4 moles
Product yield: (0.000277 mol/0.00027 mol) x 100 = 102.5% yield
*Note: A recording mistake was made in the lab notebook, where the final product was supposed to be
0.05g (calculations above) and not 0.55g (calculations below).
0.55g ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The range determined in the experiment is approximately 2 degrees above the actual melting point
range, indicating some impurities in the final compound. According to the IR spectrum, the product
obtained is quite pure. The peaks in the table above indicate the presence of a carbonyl, specifically
the C=O bond of a cyclic ketone and also the sp2 hybridized =C H bond of an alkene. There is no
broad peak ranging from 3200 cm 1 3600 cm 1, which would indicate the presence of the OH group of
an alcohol. Thus, there is likely no presence of starting material in the final product. The percent yield
above 100% indicates that some liquid (hexanes) used to recrystallize the product was likely still in
the flask when the product was weighed.
2. Price of Reagents
Jones Oxidation: 0.00027 moles of 9 hydroxyfluorene requires:
(.00027 mol)(1.1) / (2M) = .1485 L of 2M CrO3 in H2SO4. That would be 14.85mL. Therefore,
($88.70)(14.85/25) = $52.69
PCC Oxidation: .00027 moles of PCC would weigh: (.00027mol)(1.1)(215.56g/mol) = 0.064g. This
costs ($25.20)(.064/25)= $0.06
Swern Oxidation: (0.00027 mol)(1.1)(78.13 g/mol) / (1.1 g/mL) = 0.02 mL of DMSO. ($28.70)
(.02/100) = $0.01
(.00027 mol)(3)(101.2 g/mol)/(.725 g/mL) = 0.11 mL of Et3N
($24.50)(.11/100) = $0.27
(.00027 mol)(1.1)(126.93 g/mol) = 0.038g of Oxalyl chloride
($51.90)(.038/25) = $0.08
Total cost: 0.01+0.27+0.08 = $0.36
Bleach Oxidation: (.00027

Max Weber And His Contributions
Phala Monte
Ms. Berner
SYG 2000 01Z
7 June 2015
Max Weber and His Contributions Throughout the early 1900s, Max Weber was considered as one of
the three founders of sociology, because he had acquired many ideas that profoundly influenced social
theory and social research. For sociology as a whole, Weber s study of sociology is theoretical
historical, because he had the idea of rationalization based on his observations from the Protestant
Work Ethic and other societies to analyze modern societies. This led to the development of one of the
main theoretical perspectives, known as interactionism; Weber had supported the view of symbolic
interactionism, because his earlier ideas mainly focused on the individual s viewpoint and experience
and how that person would relate to society. Weber had changed the way sociologists view individuals
within this theoretical perspective, based on his contributing ideas. To start with early life, Karl Emil
Maximilian Weber was born in 1864, in Erfurt, Province of Saxony, Prussia. (Winch 735). His mother,
Helene Fallenstein, was part of humanitarian and religious convictions, and his father, Max Weber Sr.,
was a National Liberal parliamentary deputy. His wife Marianne Schnitger was a feminist activist.
While Weber never paid attention in school, he read Goethe, which might have had influenced his
theorist ideas and methodology (Winch 735). Later, he engaged in the University of Heidelberg to
study law, then he transferred to the University

Social Features Of Ants
Ants are usually thin and skinny insects. They all have 3 pairs of legs and their bodies are
divided into three main part: head, abdomen and thorax. They are narrowly connected to their
abdomen and thorax. Their antennae are bent in the middle and have chewing mouthparts. The
mouth is an essential working tool for almost every ant. It consists of two sets of jaws: the outer
two, used for carrying food and building the nest and the inner one is used for chewing. Adult
ants are able to swallow only liquids. In the back of the jaw there is a storage packet which
converts solid food into liquid by breaking it down with its strong saliva. They swallow the liquid
part whereas spits out the liquid one. Ants do not have lungs but breathe instead through small
holes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ants are known as social insects, living in large colonies altogether. The colony is specifically
divided into certain castes or classes: queens (reproductive females), males and workers. There
are way differences between social structures among ant colonies, nonetheless they share few
common basic features. They reside in a community being dependant on one another. They
work as a whole starting from feeding and protecting one another to raising and caring their
young ones. Each member of the community is assigned with specific jobs, from laying eggs to
gathering food to fighting. For these ants, colony life centers around the nest which can be
underground, a mound or even at the treetops. An ant colony is the busiest and crowded place.
Like many other social insects, ants do have three classes: queen ants, worker ants and male
ants. A queen is a vital member of the colony but does not rule the colony. Her only job is to lay
eggs in absence of which the colony would die out. The reason behind this is that only queens
can reproduce. A colony may have one or several queens. For example; a European wood

My Lai Massacre Analysis
METONYMY I used to date a girl whose biggest fear was human fragility. The details of it, I mean,
terrified her. The idea that bones can break, and fingers can be cut off, and noses can bleed. Tendons,
especially. She found tendons disgusting. Hated the idea of them, because she couldn t imagine a
tendon without imagining it snapping like a sinewy rubber band. I don t know why she never
expressed the same aversion to ligaments, but she probably had it, if I d brought it up. I never could
bring it up, though, because if I made any mention of violence of any kind, she looked like she was
going to throw up, and sometimes she did. So, in addition to not being able to discuss certain aspects
of the news (she never knew and never wanted to know the details of the night Trayvon Martin died,
for example,) we also couldn t watch certain movies. After a year or so of living with her, I d taken to
checking movie review sites made for Christian parents to decide which movies their teenagers can
and cannot watch before suggesting anything. One night, we watched a documentary about the My Lai
Massacre, and she cried for two hours. She was upset about the ... Show more content on

She had a superb talent for beautiful imagery, but her work was incomprehensible, content wise. I
thought at the time I told her at the time, is actually what I can report with accuracy, because I don t
know exactly what I thought that she just needed to spend time reading and collecting experiences, so
that she could have something more to say. In retrospect, and as with many opinions this is one that
has become less generous in retrospect, for all I know precisely because it s in retrospect anyway, in
retrospect, I think nobody who refuses to confront even the barest fact of the breakability of bones and
ignores big issues (like the nature of truth) to avoid small ones (like stepped on fingers) could possibly
have anything to say, certainly as an

he Lottery by Shirley Jackson
Hitting the Lottery In the beginning of Shirley Jackson s The Lottery, June 27th is as normal as any
other summer day in the small village. The morning was described as clear and sunny with flowers
blossoming profusely and the grass richly green (Jackson, 1). The attitudes of the children are rather
happy and normal as they begin to gather playing boisterous[ly] (Jackson, 1). By the end of the story,
the beautiful, normal summer day as described in the beginning is a day that every member, including
the children, of the town partakes in a public stoning of a member of their village. In this dark and
unpredictable short story, Shirley Jackson uses tone and objects to convey a message of tradition and
murder. The tone in Shirley Jackson s The Lottery changes from happy to cautious to horrific. The
tone not only creates a feel for the reader but it also reflects how the characters in the story feel as
well. When the people are described as happy in the beginning, the reader is at ease, expecting
nothing; however, a feeling of nervousness falls on the reader as the men in the crowd of villagers
[held] the small folded papers in their large hands [while] turning them over and over nervously
(Jackson, 4). The reader doesn t know why the men with the slips of paper are nervous which causes
him or her to become anxious and nervous as well. When a stone hit [Mrs. Hutchinson s] on the side
of her head, the tone quickly shifts from anxiety to disbelief and horror

Essay On The Equal Rights Amendment
Alice Paul and Crystal Eastman wrote the Equal Rights Amendment. The ERA is an amendment to the
United States Constitution created to guarantee equal rights amongst all citizens disregarding the sex.
It specifically states Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United
States or by any state on account of sex . The ERAs purpose was to end the legal distinctions between
men and women in terms of divorce, property, employment, and other matters. In 1923, the
amendment was introduced for the first time in Congress by the National Women s Party and since
then has brought up many conversations about men and women s equality.
During the process of trying to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment there were certain people who
were huge supporters of the amendment and others who were eager to prevent it from happening.
During the 1970 s and 1980 s, there were many different feminist groups in New Orleans, such as the
National Organization for Women or NOW, the Independent Women s Organization or IWO, and the
Women s Liberation Coalition or WLC. NOW and IWO were categorized to be more of the liberal
groups, whereas the WLC was the more radical collective group. In 1966, feminist Betty Friedan co
founded NOW. This organization was an aspire for women, to bring them into the mainstream of
American society now [in] fully equal partnership with men. Friedan was also homophobic. She
referred to lesbians as the lavender menace , and warned NOW chapters not

Essay Cholera Disease Research Report

Disease Research Report
December 9, 2010
CHOLERA
Disease Defined Cholera is an infection of the small intestine that causes a large amount of watery
diarrhea. Cholera is a bacterial disease (caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae) usually spread
through contaminated water. The bacteria, which are found in fecal contaminated food and water and
in raw or undercooked seafood, produce a toxin that affects the intestines causing diarrhea, vomiting,
and severe fluid and electrolyte loss. This overwhelming dehydration is the outstanding characteristic
of the disease and is the main cause of death. Cholera has a short incubation period (two or three days)
and runs a quick course. In untreated cases the death rate is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net
...
In this setting, the disease occurs primarily in young children, who are exposed to the organism for the
first time, and in the elderly, who have lower gastric acid production and waning immunity. The poor
are at greatest risk because they often lack safe water supplies, are unable to maintain proper hygiene
within the home, and may depend on street vendors or other unregulated sources for food and drink.
Recent epidemiologic research suggests that an individual s susceptibility to cholera (and other
diarrheal infections) is affected by their blood type: those with type O blood are the most susceptible,
while those with type AB are the most resistant. Between these two extremes are the A and B blood
types, with type A being more resistant than type B.
Signs and Symptoms * Dry mucus membranes or mouth * Dry skin * Excessive thirst * Glassy or
sunken eyes * Lack of tears * Lethargy * Low urine output * Nausea * Rapid dehydration *
Abdominal cramps * Watery diarrhea * Rapid pulse * Vomiting
The usual incubation period is 2 to 5 days, although it can be as short as several hours. Severe cholera
is characterized by a sudden onset of profuse, watery diarrhea accompanied by nausea and vomiting.
If left untreated, this can rapidly lead to serious dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and circulatory
collapse. Over 50% of the most severe cases die within a few hours; with prompt, effective treatment,

Partnership working
When things aren t going well or when I am unsure about something in my job role I would speak to

Core Competence Much of the research on competitive advantage focused on core competencies as a major source of that advantage, core competencies include the particular set of skills and resources affirm possesses as well as the way those resources are used to produce outcomes (Fiol, 2001). The concept of core competence, as fundamental to organizational renewal and as a driving force behind strategic change, interests both managers and scholars. It is a complex and challenging concept: it is difficult to specify theoretically, to identify empirically as a phenomenon, and to apply in practice. Scholars have recently recognized these problems in general conceptual discussions (Hafsi and Thomas, 2005) and in core competence specific empirical research (Wang et al., 2004). Competencies are commonly agreed to reside in individuals and teams of individuals, implying that the competence concept involves a cumulative hierarchy. • 5. How Reiki Is Considered As A Form Of Healing Essay This assignment evaluates the topic of reiki, which is considered as a form of healing. To begin, it provides a definition and highlights reiki s application in mainstream medicine. This forms scientific assumptions of the use of the scientific method. This highlights credibility, methodology and reliability as a precursor of application to public health. As a result, it firstly demonstrates credibility through the process of gathering scientific facts from reliable sources. Journals are found using the British Psychological Society (BPS) and PsycINFO. This subsequently provides empirical research for critical review. Secondly, it explores methodology from a selection of these journals. It includes the necessity of operational definitions, value and measurement, and construct validity. Finally, it therefore demonstrates the reliability of results as scientific data, to infer robust conclusions. This will provide the basis of the argument to evaluate if reiki is science or pseudoscience. Reiki Application Firstly, reiki is described as an ancient Japanese form of therapeutic healing (Baldwin, Rand Schwartz, 2013; Baldwin, Wagers Schwartz, 2008; Cuneo et al., 2011; Diaz Rodriguez et al., 2011; Richeson, Spross, Lutz Peng, 2010; Shore, 2004). • 6. Descriptive Essay About Ice Cream On Monday, May 22, 2017, my mother and I visited the Museum of Ice Cream. The museum isn t your typical museum, there wasn t much about the history of ice cream or why it was made, it was more of an interactive art museum. There are ten different galleries in the museum with gigantic ice cream themed art. These rooms include, a gummy bear themed room, a banana split room, a chocolate mint room, a melting popsicle room, and more. Almost every room came with samples of ice cream and candies, it was absolutely magic! In contrast, the drive there was not quite as magical. The museum is in downtown Los Angles where there was a lot of traffic, especially because we were scheduled to go at 5:30 p.m. As my mom and I were driving up, I was questioning what we were getting into because it was an industrial area, then, we pulled up to this bright pink building and that was when I began to get excited. Once we got there, we were a little early, we went just outside the museum where there was a little waiting area complete with ice cream themed connect four and a huge Jenga. Once it was time for us to enter the museum, we waited in line for a worker from the museum to scan our ticket and I was elated. Then, another worker from the museum came out from inside and showed us through the giant glass doors into the museum. Nettles Columbia College 2015 The Secretary of Education report charts the future of United States higher education and outlines various recommendations to improve it. As higher education evolves in unexpected ways, this new landscape demands innovation and flexibility from the institutions that serve the nation s learners. The recommendations mentioned include assess, cost and affordability, financial aid, learning, transparency and accountability, and finally innovation. One of the most significant recommendations that needs to definitely be address is the issue of cost and affordability of higher education. The way higher education is being financed is becoming increasingly dysfunctional. State appropriations are declining; educational cost is rising; and cost per student is increasing faster than inflation or family income. Affordability is directly affected by a financing system that provides limited incentives for colleges and universities to take aggressive steps to improve institutional efficiency and productivity. Public worry about increasing expenses might eventually add to the disintegration of open trust in higher education. Only through reform can confidence in higher education in America be renewed. The Secretary of Education s report states that America must ensure that our citizens have access to high quality and affordable educational, learning, and training opportunities throughout ... Essay on Clinical Uses of Electroencephalogram CLINICAL USES OF ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAM An electroencephalogram (EEG) is actually a test to measure the electrical activity of the brain as recorded from electrodes placed on the scalp. A routine clinical EEG recording typically lasts 20 30 minutes (plus preparation time). An EEG can tell us if there is abnormal electrical activity in the brain and, in some cases, the types of seizures that someone might be going through. One of the most common EEG applications is to show the type and location of the activity in the brain during a seizure. This information can then be used for making the right diagnosis. Nevertheless, the EEG reflects the function of the brain and is therefore a complement, rather than an inconsequential alternative, to these newer procedures. The third major use of electroencephalography is in the investigation of patients with certain neurologic disorders that produce characteristic EEG abnormalities which, although nonspecific, help to suggest, establish, or support the diagnosis. These abnormalities are exemplified well by the repetitive slow wave complexes sometimes seen in herpes simplex encephalitis, which should suggest this diagnosis if the complexes are found in patients with an acute cerebral illness. The electrical findings are best regarded as one more physical sign, however, and as such should be evaluated in conjunction with the other clinical and laboratory data. A further use of electroencephalography one that may increase in importance with the development of quantitative techniques for assessing the data that are obtained is in the screening or monitoring of patients with metabolic disorders, because it provides an objective measure of the improvement or deterioration that may precede any change in the clinical state of the patient. These systems also help in the removal of contaminants in wastewater from household sewage, runoff, domestic, commercial and institutional units. Processes include physical, chemical and biological manipulation of contaminants to neutralize their effects on the human body for consumption. While a loving nature is generally regarded as a noble if not redeemable trait in literary characters, especially in Victorian literature where the idea of marrying for love was gaining popularity, protagonist Maggie Tulliver subverted that idea. It was because of Maggie s all consuming familial love for her brother Tom, platonic love for Philip, and romantic love for Stephen that directly caused her ultimate downfall and death. The next time that the two siblings fought was the infamous pastry debacle, in which Tom had stolen two pastries for them to share and let Maggie decide who would get the bigger one. Maggie insisted that he take the bigger pastry, but Tom countered by telling her it was alright for her to take it. He then seethed in anger as they ate together when she did indeed take the prefered pastry and he called her greedy. Tom s motivations for doing this are never made entirely clear. Was it a trick question? Was he testing Maggie to see if she would still put him first even when he said not to? But that was the trick, that she thought she was being respectful and putting Tom first by taking his permission to accept the larger pastry for herself. Spend time in the space and select the most important and visible walls in those rooms. These walls should be considered the focal points of your design. When choosing art for these spaces, consider the size that art will need to be in order to take up enough visual space. Match the size and shape of the pieces to the walls. For instance, if you have a long horizontal wall, hang a long horizontal piece of art. In the same space, you could also hand a collection of pieces in order to take up more horizontal space. By accentuating the height or length of the wall, you will be making the room feel larger. Choosing Art For Your Bedroom When choosing art for your bedroom, it is important that you consider what it is you would like to get out of the space. Is your bedroom a place of rest, a place to unwind, or a place for romance? The style and mood of the art you choose should be in line with your overall plans for your bedroom space. • 23. The Pre-Confederation Period and the Confederation Period Canada is a constitutional monarchy and a liberal democracy. As a member of G 8 it is one of the most industrialized nations in the world and holds a very important position in reference to the world economy. Territorially Canada was not always the same. It went through changes to evolve in the form it is today. The Canada of today was earlier in the form of various British colonies. The region was not united and they joined hand with the passage of time. The history of Canada can be divided roughly into two factions: the pre confederation period and the confederation period. The pre confederation period is the period prior to the unification of Canada. Before the advent of Europeans, Canada had no single unified government or administration. The only kind of politics was the treaties signed among the regions or tribes. At the same time, the local leaders or head of the tribes were the only form of government known to the people. Canada turned into a series of colonies with the arrival of the Europeans. Various regions were colonized by different nations of Europe like Britain, France and even Spain. All the colonies which form Canada were once a part of New France. The British acquired those colonies by the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 and by the Treaty of Paris in 1763. The Canada, as we know today, took its shape in 1867 with the signing of the British North America Act. This Act created a single unified administration for the whole region. History essay Using these four passages and your own knowledge, asses the view that Japan was driven into war with the western powers in 1941 by American policies. Both interpretations B and D prove that America was the only driving force that caused a war in the Pacific. The oil embargo that America enforced in 1940 was an incentive for Japan, a country very reliant on imports of which most primarily came from America feeding its daily usage of 12,000 tons of oil,to declare war on the country that was slowing its progress to conquer China. Interpretation D also shows Japan s aggression being sparked by American decisions. America s grip on all vital resources in the Pacific would have driven Japan to war as it was the only alternative to stop America whilst still keeping control over China. The leading philosophies of the time, assumed that acquiring an empire provided the basis of prosperity and future national security. This on the other hand contradicts the interpretation as it presents Japan as an empire with clear instructions on how to achieve wealth through imperialism. This is shown throughout the passage where by the time the war in China began in 1937 politicians favouring expansionism were in high offices of state. America is no longer the only reason that war began as the views of the leaders in 1937 were evidently expansionist. Japan does not want any relations with America as in the eyes of Japan s leaders that would have entailed a colossal loss of prestige with incalculable internal consequences. • 29. The Burden And Blessing Of Mortality Mortality has always been a difficult subject to discuss within the public sphere. People, more often than anything else, fear death so greatly that they avoid this topic all together. Perhaps it is the unknown factor about the afterlife (or lack thereof) that so petrifies people, causing them to distract themselves from a serious debate on the effects of mortality to our earth. Hans Jonas writes in The Burden and Blessing of Mortality about the universal advantage of human mortality and the perceived burdens of it as well. When it s phrased as immortality people see it as a remarkable idea that would reverse depression and emotional pain. On the contrary, this is likely to bolster elements like this. If we are constantly, figuratively standing still it is going to lead to far greater mental disabilities and issues than the ones we see today. Jonas believes that the concept of defeating death is wrong from the beginning, and it comes from a palpable confusion of what life is. Living and dying are interwoven together, he thinks. Each is a different side to the same procedure. Life reiterates itself as important, but can only do this since it is contested. The whole nature of value enters into the world through living and dying (Jonas, p. 36). Another point outlines how evolution would be impossible without death. Neither component would progress in any way. The process of death plays an inventive role. It celebrates uniqueness and variety, and the greater type of life s subjectivity. Jonas asserts that with dying we allow room for future life. Birth exists because dying exists, and the arrival of fresh life has significant value in itself. It permits us to see the world for the first time, see things with new eyes, wonder where others are dulled by habit, and start out from where they had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There is no broad peak ranging from 3200 cm 1 3600 cm 1, which would indicate the presence of the OH group of an alcohol. Thus, there is likely no presence of starting material in the final product. The percent yield above 100% indicates that some liquid (hexanes) used to recrystallize the product was likely still in the flask when the product was weighed. 2. Price of Reagents Jones Oxidation: 0.00027 moles of 9 hydroxyfluorene requires: (.00027 mol)(1.1) / (2M) = .1485 L of 2M CrO3 in H2SO4. That would be 14.85mL. Therefore, ($88.70)(14.85/25) = $52.69 PCC Oxidation: .00027 moles of PCC would weigh: (.00027mol)(1.1)(215.56g/mol) = 0.064g. This costs ($25.20)(.064/25)= $0.06

  • 41. Max Weber And His Contributions Phala Monte Ms. Berner SYG 2000 01Z 7 June 2015 Max Weber and His Contributions Throughout the early 1900s, Max Weber was considered as one of the three founders of sociology, because he had acquired many ideas that profoundly influenced social theory and social research. For sociology as a whole, Weber s study of sociology is theoretical historical, because he had the idea of rationalization based on his observations from the Protestant Work Ethic and other societies to analyze modern societies. This led to the development of one of the main theoretical perspectives, known as interactionism; Weber had supported the view of symbolic interactionism, because his earlier ideas mainly focused on the individual s viewpoint and experience and how that person would relate to society. Weber had changed the way sociologists view individuals within this theoretical perspective, based on his contributing ideas. To start with early life, Karl Emil Maximilian Weber was born in 1864, in Erfurt, Province of Saxony, Prussia. (Winch 735). His mother, Helene Fallenstein, was part of humanitarian and religious convictions, and his father, Max Weber Sr., was a National Liberal parliamentary deputy. His wife Marianne Schnitger was a feminist activist. While Weber never paid attention in school, he read Goethe, which might have had influenced his theorist ideas and methodology (Winch 735). Later, he engaged in the University of Heidelberg to study law, then he transferred to the University ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They are narrowly connected to their abdomen and thorax. Their antennae are bent in the middle and have chewing mouthparts. The mouth is an essential working tool for almost every ant. It consists of two sets of jaws: the outer two, used for carrying food and building the nest and the inner one is used for chewing. Adult ants are able to swallow only liquids. The colony is specifically divided into certain castes or classes: queens (reproductive females), males and workers. There are way differences between social structures among ant colonies, nonetheless they share few common basic features. They reside in a community being dependant on one another. They work as a whole starting from feeding and protecting one another to raising and caring their young ones. Each member of the community is assigned with specific jobs, from laying eggs to gathering food to fighting. For these ants, colony life centers around the nest which can be underground, a mound or even at the treetops. An ant colony is the busiest and crowded place. Like many other social insects, ants do have three classes: queen ants, worker ants and male ants. A queen is a vital member of the colony but does not rule the colony. Her only job is to lay eggs in absence of which the colony would die out. The reason behind this is that only queens can reproduce. A colony may have one or several queens. The idea that bones can break, and fingers can be cut off, and noses can bleed. Tendons, especially. She found tendons disgusting. Hated the idea of them, because she couldn t imagine a tendon without imagining it snapping like a sinewy rubber band. I don t know why she never expressed the same aversion to ligaments, but she probably had it, if I d brought it up. I never could bring it up, though, because if I made any mention of violence of any kind, she looked like she was going to throw up, and sometimes she did. So, in addition to not being able to discuss certain aspects of the news (she never knew and never wanted to know the details of the night Trayvon Martin died, for example,) we also couldn t watch certain movies. After a year or so of living with her, I d taken to checking movie review sites made for Christian parents to decide which movies their teenagers can and cannot watch before suggesting anything. • 46. he Lottery by Shirley Jackson Hitting the Lottery In the beginning of Shirley Jackson s The Lottery, June 27th is as normal as any other summer day in the small village. The morning was described as clear and sunny with flowers blossoming profusely and the grass richly green (Jackson, 1). The attitudes of the children are rather happy and normal as they begin to gather playing boisterous[ly] (Jackson, 1). By the end of the story, the beautiful, normal summer day as described in the beginning is a day that every member, including the children, of the town partakes in a public stoning of a member of their village. In this dark and unpredictable short story, Shirley Jackson uses tone and objects to convey a message of tradition and murder. The tone in Shirley Jackson s The Lottery changes from happy to cautious to horrific. The tone not only creates a feel for the reader but it also reflects how the characters in the story feel as well. When the people are described as happy in the beginning, the reader is at ease, expecting nothing; however, a feeling of nervousness falls on the reader as the men in the crowd of villagers [held] the small folded papers in their large hands [while] turning them over and over nervously (Jackson, 4). The reader doesn t know why the men with the slips of paper are nervous which causes him or her to become anxious and nervous as well. When a stone hit [Mrs. Hutchinson s] on the side of her head, the tone quickly shifts from anxiety to disbelief and horror ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. Essay On The Equal Rights Amendment Alice Paul and Crystal Eastman wrote the Equal Rights Amendment. The ERA is an amendment to the United States Constitution created to guarantee equal rights amongst all citizens disregarding the sex. It specifically states Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex . The ERAs purpose was to end the legal distinctions between men and women in terms of divorce, property, employment, and other matters. In 1923, the amendment was introduced for the first time in Congress by the National Women s Party and since then has brought up many conversations about men and women s equality. During the process of trying to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment there were certain people who were huge supporters of the amendment and others who were eager to prevent it from happening. During the 1970 s and 1980 s, there were many different feminist groups in New Orleans, such as the National Organization for Women or NOW, the Independent Women s Organization or IWO, and the Women s Liberation Coalition or WLC. NOW and IWO were categorized to be more of the liberal groups, whereas the WLC was the more radical collective group. In 1966, feminist Betty Friedan co founded NOW. This organization was an aspire for women, to bring them into the mainstream of American society now [in] fully equal partnership with men. Friedan was also homophobic. • 48. Essay Cholera Disease Research Report Karla Obasi HEA 341 Disease Research Report December 9, 2010 CHOLERA Disease Defined Cholera is an infection of the small intestine that causes a large amount of watery diarrhea. Cholera is a bacterial disease (caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae) usually spread through contaminated water. The bacteria, which are found in fecal contaminated food and water and in raw or undercooked seafood, produce a toxin that affects the intestines causing diarrhea, vomiting, and severe fluid and electrolyte loss. This overwhelming dehydration is the outstanding characteristic of the disease and is the main cause of death. Cholera has a short incubation period (two or three days) and runs a quick course. In untreated cases the death rate is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this setting, the disease occurs primarily in young children, who are exposed to the organism for the first time, and in the elderly, who have lower gastric acid production and waning immunity. The poor are at greatest risk because they often lack safe water supplies, are unable to maintain proper hygiene within the home, and may depend on street vendors or other unregulated sources for food and drink. Recent epidemiologic research suggests that an individual s susceptibility to cholera (and other diarrheal infections) is affected by their blood type: those with type O blood are the most susceptible, while those with type AB are the most resistant. Between these two extremes are the A and B blood types, with type A being more resistant than type B. Signs and Symptoms * Dry mucus membranes or mouth * Dry skin * Excessive thirst * Glassy or sunken eyes * Lack of tears * Lethargy * Low urine output * Nausea * Rapid dehydration * Abdominal cramps * Watery diarrhea * Rapid pulse * Vomiting The usual incubation period is 2 to 5 days, although it can be as short as several hours. Severe cholera is characterized by a sudden onset of profuse, watery diarrhea accompanied by nausea and vomiting. If left untreated, this can rapidly lead to serious dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and circulatory collapse. Over 50% of the most severe cases die within a few hours; with prompt, effective treatment, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
