Native American Culture In The 18th And 19th Century
In the United States, there are over 500 federally recognized American and Native tribes. All which
study and practice their own set of cultures and values. Religion, language, food and way of dress are
what makes every tribe different in their own unique way. The Indian Wars of both the 18th and 19th
century caused many of these tribes to relocate thus causing them to not only lose their homelands but
also their cultural identity. Native Americans were prohibited from practicing religion and cultural
ceremonies. This caused a recession in youth obtaining the knowledge to keep their cultural
renaissance alive and pass on their tribal dialects to future generations. Today, however Native
Americans are thriving at branding their youth with generation after generation of language, religion,
ceremonial tradition etc. The Native American culture ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hispanic Americans may not have been kicked off their homeland and prohibited to study and teach
religion but they too have had to fight for their freedom. The Natives fought for their land and the
mexicans fought for territory. Different yet same. Decades ago, in the hispanic culture, the females
were raised to tend to the children and the men. Young females were considered women at very young
ages and were expected to get married and bear children. The men would go out and work to put food
on the table. In the Native Culture, it was the same, however native men would go out and hunt while
the native women would stay behind and tend to the children and work. Their work not only consisted
of cooking and cleaning, it also consisted of a full day of weaving baskets, stretching leather, picking
corn and anything needed for survival. The native woman was strong with belief and spiritual healing,
while hispanic women were dominated by the man. Today, however things have changed for both
cultures. Women are expected to work as well as take care of the home and

Ph-Amylase Lab Report
The Effect of pH levels on the Rate of Activity of ⍺ Amylase
Ryan Andrew
Introduction:
Enzymes are some of the most important chemicals in the human body. Without them, humans and
many other organisms would simply be unable to live. Our dependence on enzymes comes from their
nature as biological catalysts, substances that speed up chemical reactions without being used up or
changed (Worthington biochem.com, 2017). They allow chemical reactions in our body to occur at a
rate that is acceptable for our cells metabolism (Worthington biochem.com, 2017). Enzymes are able
to do this by binding to their substrate or substrates, the molecules they react with, and either breaking
it down or combining them to form a new molecule (Wilbraham et ... Show more content on

Amylase is the name of a group of enzymes that break starch down into smaller molecules like
maltose or glucose (Encyclopedia Britannica, 1998). ⍺ amylase is the amylase that is found in many
mammals, including humans, in whom it can be found in saliva or the small intestine (Encyclopedia
Britannica, 1998). As this is such an important topic for the world, many studies have been done to
investigate the effects of pH on amylase. Two such experiments, one by Supannapong et al., and one
by Tizon, Serrano and Traifalgar, both found that amylase activity peaked somewhere between a pH of
6 and 7, which fits in with most of the information available on this enzyme (2007; 2012). The aim of
this experiment was to investigate the effect that different pH levels had on the rate of activity of the
enzyme ⍺ amylase. It was hypothesised that pH levels below and above 7 would result in a consistent
decrease in the ability of the amylase to break starch down into glucose, and therefore the rate of
activity of amylase and the amount of glucose in the solution, until the amylase became denatured to
the point at which it no longer could react with the starch, at which point the reaction would stop, and
further changes in pH level would have no effect. This is because ⍺ amylase s natural environment, in
saliva or near the pancreas, has a pH level of approximately 7 (Worthington biochem.com, 2017). As
such, any notable shift from a pH level of 7 will result in increasing levels of

Babylon Revisited Alcoholism
In 1931, Fitzgerald published Babylon Revisited in the Saturday Evening Post. The 18th amendment
was still in effect until 1933. The way that this story portrays alcohol was still based on a prohibition
era way of thinking, but looking back on the raucous living of the twenties. Fitzgerald s own
experiences with alcoholism and the consequences of it after the boom heavily influenced this story.
Regardless, it is still valuable as an example of contradiction because it shows prohibitionist thought
by warning against the dangers of alcoholism while exaggerating alcohol s prevalence. This story
takes place in France and some may argue that there is the possibility that French culture influenced
these characters more than American culture. The main reasoning behind this claim is that drinking
was legal in France and therefore might have been more popular. However, according to an article in
The New York Times, the opposite was true. The author writes, I saw no drunken people in Europe
except a couple of young Americans in London who were a bit lively...I have seen plenty in American
cities who were staggering drunk and have seen nothing of the kind in England, France, Germany or
Italy (Hahn). If anything, Americans influenced the French to drink more. ... Show more content on

He remarks, the stillness in the Ritz bar was strange (616), indicating that the bar used to be full
during the boom. Even looking back with the distance of time, the places associated with alcohol stick
out the most in Charlie s memory. He also remembers the women and girls carried screaming with
drink or drugs out of public places (633). Charlie does not recount a specific, and therefore odd, event
but instead bunches all of the separate occasions into one, meaning that it was a commonplace

Piano Reflection
Everything was progressing smoothly as my fingers traversed the terrain of my upright piano until,
inevitably, an all too familiar, jarring chord rang from its core. Although I wanted nothing more than
to disregard my repeated blunder and never look back, I knew that this strategy would fall short when
I performed the piece for my teacher the following day. So with perseverance, focus, and fear of a
disapproving glare, I managed to play it through faultlessly. Now all that remained was the small task
of playing the piece an additional four times in a row with that same impeccable accuracy. Upon
realizing the amount of work ahead of me, I mentally kicked myself for not starting sooner and
lengthened my timer from the remaining twelve minutes to another thirty. It was time to woodshed
this until I got it right every time.
Playing the piano has been a rewarding experience for me throughout my life for not only granting me
the skill of playing, but also for teaching me lessons that can be applied to my academic and personal
life. One of the most valuable lessons I have learned from piano is the ability of breaking down a
seemingly unsolvable problem into its basic components or, in the terms of my piano teacher,
woodshedding. For non musicians, woodshedding might be an unfamiliar term and may even sound
fictitious, but rest assured, it is a legitimate word denoting the practice of an instrument. However, my
piano teacher had a more distinct interpretation. The first time I

Comparison Of Andy Warhol And Pop Art
Andy Warhol and Pop Art
All paintings are inspirational, but I chose to write about 3 specific paintings by 3 very different
artists. The first of three artists is Andy Warhol and his The Gun painting, the second is Roy
Lichtenstein and his Girl with Ball painting and the third is Robert Rauschenberg with his Migration
painting. In the following report, you will read about the different styles of these artists,
communicative theories, inner state theories, form and content, and how they compare and contrast
among other subjects.
Some of the communicative theories produced by these pictures are very meaningful. The Gun shows
us what Andy Warhol may have felt in his life at the time of the painting. Warhol sees his life ... Show

I begin to appreciate my life a little more when I look at this painting. There seems to be a sense of
lost time by looking at the clock with no hands. A moving cardboard box reminds me of something a
homeless man would sleep in and the soiled shirt would be something a homeless person would wear.
From this, I begin to appreciate my clean clothes and home. Girl with Ball gives me a feeling of being
carefree. She seems to be having fun on the beach, enjoying the sun. This painting produces emotions
that I value such as being carefree and having fun.
All three paintings are very different in their own way in regards to aesthetics. Warhol s The Gun has
few colors, but shows the gun slightly pointing inward towards the viewer. His use of the silk screen
gave the picture imperfections, which make it unique. Lichtenstien s Girl with Ball is one of the most
unique forms of painting I have ever seen done. His use of Benday dots shows an image that looks to
be done by machine. The lines are very distinct and the body of the subject is completely outlined in
black giving an intense feeling. The spatial relationships in the painting bring us to focus on the face
of the girl. Migration has no distinct lines, but with strategically placed items, he brings them all
together with running paint into neighboring areas. The relationships of all the items and their spatial
arrangement only give us more to work with in

Self-Driving Trucks
Self driving trucks have become a major scare for the trucking industry. Although uber s Advanced
Technology Group is promoting the positives of the new technology, truck drivers are realizing that
their jobs are not secure. Uber believes that self driving trucks will majorly increase supply, demand,
and the amount of trucking jobs. The work that humans provide during drives is not matchable. Truck
drivers move axles, check brakes, check are hoses, and communicate with outside sources. The more
computerized jobs become, the less necessity there will be for manual labor.
Demand Relationship: This relates the prices to the quantity demanded. The article states, If the self
driving trucks are used more efficiently, it would drive down the cost of freight, which would
stimulate demand. This is an exceptional example of demand relationship in the it displays how lower
prices would raise demand. Uber thinks the demand for freight will create a greater need for truck
drivers. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Uber, self driving trucks will largely increase the amount of freight that can be sold. As a
result of the supply growth, more jobs will be created. It is hard to see a correlation between self
driving trucks and a job surge for truck drivers.
Market Equilibrium: This means that supply and demand are equal. It was predicted that the demand
for more freight will rise and supply will grow in order to match the high demand. Many companies
strive for market equilibrium, so it is obvious that the trucking industry would benefit greatly in goods
and services.
Movement Along the Demand Curve: This occurs when there is a change in both price and the
quantity demanded. The article demonstrated that a decrease in the cost of freight would raise the
demand for it. The relationship between a lower price and higher demand is displayed accurately in
this article with the desire for more efficient self driving

Getting to Yes Analysis Essay
Whether or not we are aware of it, each of us is faced with an abundance of conflict each and every
day. From the division of chores within a household, to asking one s boss for a raise, we ve all learned
the basic skills of negotiation. A national bestseller, Getting to Yes, introduces the method of
principled negotiation, a form of alternative dispute resolutions as opposed to the common method of
positional bargaining. Within the book, four basic elements of principled negotiation are stressed;
separate the people from the problem, focus on interests instead of positions, invest options for mutual
gain, and insist on using objective criteria. Following this section of the book are suggestions for

Again, I found these guidelines to be oversimplified and completely void of the fact that human s are
inapt to simply putting their feelings aside. Also, following the suggestions such as using symbolic
gestures, an example being to ‘[deliver] a small present for a grandchild seem to me as a pathetic way
of sucking up, and could even result in a power shift, as the other party could see the acts as a way of
asking for pity. Either way, aside from such conflicts where feelings are the cause, the method of
separating the people from the problem is a very intelligent one. Also, it makes way for a better
relationship at the end of the negotiations, as both parties feel respected by the other. The second part
of the method focuses on interests instead of positions. Interests refer to the result needed, while
positions refer to that wanted. Again, this is a very intellectual concept to ideal conflict and
negotiation. However, in a world where people always want more than enough, and where positions
can be advantageous, this concept is seems to be unnecessary and even unfavourable. In the case of a
‘victim in conflict, one can usually bargain more than they ‘need for their damages. In the case of
positions and power, an employee not acknowledging a CEO his/her power would not make a

The Immigration Of Illegal Immigrants
The United States has been worldly known for its characteristics of prosperity, opportunity, and
freedom which ultimately form the famous American dream, in which so many individuals desire.
While this country s reputation and culture was built on the basis of immigration, the ideals and
viewpoints of this topic have strayed far from welcoming over the years. Both the Democratic and
Republican parties find faults in the overflow of illegal immigrants coming into America, but differ in
their strategies of devising a solution to this issue. In short, Democrats believe in giving immigrants
the opportunity to enhance our nation by contributing to their communities and workforces, offering
them an education, and strengthening social values by keeping families together instead of deporting
them. Their main goal is to form a road to citizenship in which illegal immigrants can make their lives
here permanent as legal American citizens. On the other hand, Republicans have a much stronger view
on the necessary enforcements and restrictions that should be placed upon the flow of illegal
immigrants. They believe that there is a defined line between legal immigration and illegal
immigration that is causing the immigration system to fall apart. Over the years, immigration reform
has been a common topic of debate, especially during presidential campaigning, with the Republican
Party holding steady views on controlling border security, illegal immigrants already in the country,

Asylum Seekers In Australia Essay
Asylum seekers are people who have left their home country to find asylum in another country as a
political refugee. Now in Australia, asylum seekers are being forced to detention centres by the
Australian government. Citizens of the Australian community are deciding whether asylum seekers
should be allowed to become residents in Australia. Asylum seekers should be given asylum in
Australia because they have not committed any crimes and Australia takes a minimum number of
asylum seekers in a year compared to other underdeveloped countries. Furthermore, asylum seekers
have greatly contributed to the Australian society.
The Australian government had signed The Refugee convention but are now not following the

The Stop Online Piracy Act was proposed in January of 2012. SOPA was a legislative act that
attempted to prevent piracy through DNS blocking and censorship. The legislation caused the protest
and blackout of multiple online internet services including Reddit, 4Chan, Google, Wikipedia,
Mozilla, and Tumblr. Now, internet users are faced with another possible challenge called the Cyber
Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, or CISPA. CISPA was quickly passed by the House of

The Wiretap Act prohibits the government from intentional interception, use, or disclosure of wire and
electronic communications without a warrant. Similarly, the Electronic Communications Privacy Act
protects wire, oral, and electronic communications while in transit (Franklin). Some may wonder how
the government is able to override such laws that come to make America what it is today, a nation
noted for its religious and intellectual freedom, and the answer is national security. Anything is
possible in order to increase national security and eliminate any threats.
Not to mention that as long as participants of CISPA exchange information with good intentions, they
will not be held to any criminal or civil liabilities and become one hundred percent anonymous in the
process (PopVox). This may incentivize private companies to release users information without a
thought regarding the authenticity of the threat due to convenience. After information is shared with
the federal government, the data is stored and is able to be used for any purpose beyond preserving the
national security. Some usages include immigration and crime. At the same time, users are also not
required to be notified by either the private company or the government when their information is
exchanged. Due to such concerns, many activist websites that opposed SOPA, including

Compare And Contrast The Utility Theory Of Value And The...

Ignė Martutaitytė
ISM University of Management and economics
Compare and contrast the utility theory of value and the labor theory of value
Many economists tried to explain the source of value of goods and services and find the best way to
measure it. Along with other theories two most popular ones were created. First of them is the labour
theory of value mainly known from the writings of Adam Smith, David Ricardo and Karl Marx.
Despite the fact that their views on value had minor differences, their main idea was that with few
exceptions the quantity of labour employed on commodities determines the rate at which they will
exchange for each other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Probably the most commonly used and basic economic method to determine prices of a commodity is
the supply and demand method. While this method states that both demand and supply are equally
important and it is their intersection that determines the price of a good, both theories of value
emphasize only one function of this model. As the advocates of labour theory cared mostly about the
inputs of production, they mainly focused on the supply side. For example, Ricardo mentioned in his
letter to Malthus it is supply which regulates value and supply is itself controlled by comparative cost
of production. (Ricardo, 1951, 279). In contrast the theory of marginal utility states that it is not the
supply but demand that is the main factor in the supply demand model. This theory emphasizes the
importance of the consumer attitude towards the good and what kind of value does it provide for him.
Its supporters pointed out that despite how much labour is used to provide certain good or service
without demand it will be worthless. The supporters of the utility theory of value such as Jevons and
Menger sometimes ignored supply and based their theories exclusively on the demand and made
assumptions supposing that the rate of supply was given rather than changing (Landreth Colander,
2001). Thus, while labor theory suggest that usually supply determines the value of a good, the theory
of utility emphasize the importance of

Gunboat Diplomacy
Theodore Roosevelt s was a President who believed that the United States should be a strong country
by military strength. He believed that that we had to a power in the world and a force in the world.
Roosevelt wanted a two ocean navy. He wanted a navy that could come and go to the Pacific or the
Atlantic Ocean. With the idea of wanting power in the both oceans he began plans for the construction
of the Panama Canal. This is where the essence of the Gunboat Diplomacy comes in. Gunboat
Diplomacy involves intimidation by threat or use of military force. He ended up taking Panama and

Through a disinformation campaign the democratically elected panicked, and the CIA installed a

Gunboat diplomacy had its origins in the Opium War, when the Chinese rebelled against the British
importation of opium into China, and the British response was to send a gunboat up the Yangtze River.
The resort to force in diplomatic initiatives has roots in antiquity, from the original disputes in the
Fertile Crescent; but every generation has refined the use of coercion, to the point that today
government s use of coercion is a well oiled machine. There is almost an unwritten gentlemen s

to result in confrontation, on account of the fact that the soviet Union was collapsing, and the United

Causes Of Migrant Labor In The Philippines
Introduction Approximately 10 12 million Filipinos work as migrants abroad; the number of people
leaving the country to find work is so high that migration is a regular part of life in the Philippines
(Pardis, 121). Due to deeply embedded structural flows of capital and labor present in
postcolonial/neocolonial economic arrangements, the Philippines depend on migrant labor as a
significant export (Pardis, 123). The combination of neoliberal policies and globalization result in
push and pull forces across portions of societies and national borders that motivate migration in search
of employment or safety, such as increasing poverty and anemic development, causing the Philippines
to rely significantly on migrant labor to strengthen the domestic economy. (Pardis, 143). The heavy
reliance on migrant labor has created, in some instances, a situation of forced migration that renders
potential migrants at risk of being a trafficked person prone to exploitation as cheap labor, bonded
workers, or prostitutes (Saat, 137). Aspirant migrants depend on others to facilitate their movement,
making them susceptible to criminal intentions of those offering work opportunities abroad and
organizing travel requirements (Kempadoo, 74). The logistics of migration (recruitment,
transportation, transfer, harboring, or receipt of persons) do not constitute trafficking when carried out
formally and the person is fully informed of the conditions of work and understandings of payments
and obligations

Sterilization Laws Of The United States
Sterilization legislature was enacted on the state level with the goal of physically preventing the
procreation of individuals deemed to be unfit, mainly handicapped persons or criminals. Though the
nature of these laws did not outright target certain races or social classes, a disproportionate amount of
the individuals sterilized were non white or of immigrant background. Prominent eugenicists and
eugenic organizations in the U.S. played a key role in lobbying for state sterilization laws. Harry H.
Laughlin, superintendent of the Eugenics Record Office, drafted the American Model Eugenical
Sterilization Law in 1922, which served as a model for many sterilizations laws in the states
(Berenbaum, 1998). By 1926, 23 states had passed sterilization laws that were voluntary and/or
involuntary in nature (Sofair, 2000). Laughlin and other eugenicists called for the sterilization of
institutionalized individuals under the assertion that their genetically inferior traits would be passed to
their progeny and be an economic drain on the state. Many states complied, and by 1935 over 30
states had some form of sterilization law with over 21,000 compulsory sterilizations performed (Allen
1997). Though the eugenic nature of these laws was stressed by eugenicists, it was acknowledged that
the political support of such laws were greatly financially motivated. Another important legislation
passed by the U.S. was the Immigration Restriction Act of 1924, which was the first immigration

Aviation And Air Pollution
Air pollution has been a severe challenge to fuel consuming industries (Wang Hao 2012). Stringent
measures are to be implemented to reduce the effects of carbon emission to the environment. The
WHO (2011) has acknowledged the noise environmental impact as a serious burden of disease, and
recent contemporary studies have recognized a link between aviation noise and cardiovascular disease
(Hnasel 2013). Limited Airspace and Airports Capacities Busy airports have sometimes had to keep
aircrafts in the air in wait to land due to the lack of space and inefficient planning on arrivals and
departures. This causes an increase in costs of fuel and other harmful effects. The capacity of runways,
reception by taxis and the whole port should be increased to allow a smooth flow of activities. The

Rotavirus Vaccination
This journal article reports about rotavirus vaccination in terms of kinds of it and its performances.
There are many types of childhood disease. One of them is rotavirus. The reason why children suffer
from this disease rather than adults is that they have weaker immune systems. Rotavirus is transmitted
through various ways such as unclean hands or impure water. Before rotavirus vaccination, many
infants used to die from this. However, this is one of the most common causes of preventable
childhood disease these days so it is important to know this vaccine.
Rotavirus vaccination did not prevent its virus perfectly at first though it is easy to protect from it now.
The vaccine can be classified in two groups according to basis of its development,

The Forest Service Trail Stewardship Act Of 2015 Essay
For the purpose of this assignment, I am going to discuss the Forest Service Trail Stewardship Act of
2015, H.R. 845 (the Horse, 2016). The bill was introduced on April 29, 2015 by Cynthia Lummis
member of the Republican Party, representing the state of Wyoming and Tim Walz member of the
Democratic Party, representing the state of Minnesota. The bill was introduced by the House of
Representatives (the Horse, 2015, votesmart, 2016). The Senate Bill 1110 (S.1110), was introduced in
bipartisan fashion in the U.S. Senate Bill 1110 (S.1110), (Back Country Horsemen of America, 2016).
The bill was then sponsored by BCHA and members of The Wilderness Society and American Horse
Council (Back Country Horsemen of America, 2016). The purpose of the bill was to direct the Forest
Service to take serval actions regarding trial maintenance backlog that was adversely affecting all trail
users on many National Forests at that time, including equestrians (the Horse, 2016, American Horse
Council, 2016). The bill would promote volunteerism in the service of National Forest trails (Back
Country Horsemen of America, 2016). A study was conducted by the Government Accountability
Office in June 2013. The study showed that the Forest Service delayed trail maintenance needs which
was over half a billion dollars and only a quarter of the agency s 158,000 miles of trails met the
agency standards for maintenance. The delay of the maintenance was resulting in accessibility and
other safety issues for

The Renaissance And The Renaissance Era
When looking back at the array of time periods discussed in modern history, some stick out more than
others. One historical period that stands out in regards to the richness of the culture, as well as the
progressions in civilization, is the Renaissance era. Culture was a huge part of the Renaissance era.
The vast artistic styles in all aspects of life during this time made for such a cultural focus. The
Renaissance era was called a rebirth of cultural awareness; theatre was a large part of this, including
Shakespeare s Globe Theatre. To understand the role theatre played in shaping the Renaissance era
one must understand what exactly the Renaissance was. The Renaissance is normally thought to have
begun in Italy during the fourteenth century and to have ended in the late sixteenth century (Atlas).
The Renaissance was described as a movement that affected all aspects of culture, literature, and
scholarship as well as painting, sculpture and architecture and that consciously sought to recover and
revive the achievements of classical antiquity (Atlas). The diffusion of Renaissance culture from Italy
to Europe was made possible partly by the way Renaissance culture had diffused and changed within
Italy (Atlas). When the Renaissance movement reached Europe the English Renaissance began. This
is thought to have occurred in the early sixteenth century continuing until the early seventeenth
century. This era in England was called the Renaissance, meaning rebirth, because of the

Porter Airline Case Study
Executive Summary
Porter Airlines is a continued success in the short haul air travel business. Its low cost structure has
enabled them to be proactive in the industry and gain a fairly large market share. Porter s strategic
successes include its quick turnaround time upon departure and arrival, its competitive ticket
pricing, web ticket sales and its exceptional customer service. In addition, Porter s low cost and low
maintenance on their Q400 turboprops give them a competitive advantage as they are put in par with
regional jets; they only need 35% capacity to break even. Furthermore, Porter increasingly becomes
more successful with its established methodical growth. In addition, Porter s success as an entrant ...

shares as they have a cost advantage compared to its competitors.
Preferred Alternative:
Due to the competitive nature of this market, Porter Airlines should base its operation strategy on their
cost advantage and provide high quality services to enhance buyers experience. Porter Airlines should
establish itself as the short haul carrier of choice by providing superior customer service, convenient
and high frequency flights to customers in order to gain market shares to be sustainable in long term.
Issue 2:
While continuing on its expansion plan, Porter Airline faces many issues raised by limited resources.
Although Porter Airline has many competitive advantages such as excellent brand name, exclusive
control of the airport, low operating costs, innovated quiet aircrafts and methodical growth; expanding
beyond its current operating level would be risky. Since Porter Airline charges low cost to customers,
the high volume of customers will offset company s profit margin. There will be a need for more
funding if Porter Airline decides to expand its business; which they would be a requirement to hire
more people, purchase more aircrafts and pay more landing fees to destination airports. In order

Eating Christmas in the Kalahari
Eating Christmas in the Kalahari Eating Christmas in the Kalahari is an intriguing article written by
Richard Borshay Lee. In the article, Lee tells of his time working as an anthropologist in the Kalahari
and studying the hunting and gathering subsistence economy of the !Kung Bushmen. Lee (1969)
writes: The Bushmen s idea of the Christmas story, stripped to its essentials, is praise the birth of white
man s god chief ; what keeps their interest in the holiday high is the Tswana Herero custom of
slaughtering an ox for his Bushmen neighbors as an annual goodwill gesture. Since the 1930 s, part of
the Bushmen s annual round of activities has included a December congregation at the cattle posts for
trading, marriage brokering, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All the !Kung Bushmen s eyes were fixed on the ox as that cut through the skin revealed two inches of
thick white fat. The !Kung Bushmen had played Lee. They all knew that he chose a great ox, but they
would never let Lee think he did. Lee began asking some people why they had insulted his Christmas
ox choice. Arrogance was their reply. Lee (1969) writes: Yes, when a young man kills much meat he
comes to think of himself as a chief or a big man, and he thinks of the rest of us as his servants or
inferiors. We can t accept this. We refuse one who boasts, for someday his pride will make him kill
somebody. So we always speak of his meat as worthless. This way we cool his heart and make him
gentle. (p. 4) A couple people confirmed that what he was told by Tomazo was in fact true. Lee (1969)
writes: The pieces now fell into place. I had known for a long time that in situations of social conflict
with Bushmen I held all the cards. I was the only source of tobacco in a thousand square miles, and I
was not incapable of cutting an individual off for non cooperation. Though my boycott never lasted
longer than a few days, it was an indication of my strength. People resented my presence at the water
hole, yet simultaneously dreaded my leaving. In short, I was a perfect target for the charge of
arrogance and for the Bushmen tactic of enforcing humility. (p. 4) The

Hope for Melal Essay examples
Hope for Melal
The book Melal by Robert Barclay takes place in 1981 in The Marshall Islands of the South Pacific.
The people known as the Marshallese are the natives to these islands. Overtime other cultures began to
settle on these islands also, such as the Spanish, Japanese, and Americans. Out of these three cultures
the Americans were the most domineering and devastating to the Marshallese people. The Americans
took over the Marshallese native land and forced all of them to live on one island in deplorable
conditions. The Marshallese had their freedom revoked from them; they then had to live under the
Americans rules. Two of the Marshallese characters in this story who believes strongly in withholding

Marshallese and should stop pretending to be something he is not. Yokwe, he said, he drove the knife
down. That was when blood came up from the mouth of the mermaid on Good Friday, 1981 (Barclay
262). I think this is Rujen s first sign that he has belief that there is still hope for the Marshallese.
Rujen performed this act of killing the dolphin, because the Marshallese people believe that it is bad
luck to not kill any dolphin that came into the lagoon. This is Rujen s way of standing up for the
traditions and culture he was brought up in. If Rujen did not perform this task, the Americans were
going to make it a law that it was illegal to kill dolphins. The fact that Rujen got away with this task,
gives all Marshallese people hope that their traditions can still be performed. The second sign of Rujen
s hope in this story is shown in the following passage, How could a Marshallese be trespassing on a
Marshallese island? The ticket filled Rujen with an unbearable loathing of the ignorant man who had
written it. He waved the ticket in front of Oly s face, nearly slapping him with it. Maybe you better

Amazing Grace Play Analysis
On July 22nd, 2015, I was given the opportunity to witness a remarkable Broadway Play, called
Amazing Grace. I attended this play along with my fellow peers from the Rutgers College of Nursing
EOF program. This was the first time for most of my peers along with myself to attend a Broadway
show. Amazing Grace depicts the issue of slavery during the 1780s and the early 1800s. The main
character John Newton faced many challenges throughout the play and in the end he overcomes those
hindrances by realizing slavery degraded human beings.
One of the features that made the play exciting was the sound effect. Throughout the play, there were
many sound effects of gunshots, the ocean, and storms. These sounds captured my attention and made
me feel as if I was involved in the show. Typically, I am a person who gets uninterested easily at
things I do not enjoy. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The setting changed very often of the play and every new setting was excellent. It was amazing how
the people from the production of the play were able to master every setting with such a small
environment. There was this one scene toward the intermission where John Newton was travelling in a
ship and there was a storm, which destroyed the ship, and John Newton was drowning. However, John
Newton s friend, an African American slave, saved him and swam up to the shore. During this scene
there was a screen, which came down in front of the stage, and the effects made it look similar to a
view from under the ocean. Behind the screen one could see Thomas grabbing onto John Newton and
swimming up toward the surface of the water. This was truly amusing for the reason that it convinced
me to think it was actually water. Thus, the setting played a major role in capturing the attention of the
audience, which made everything look as if it was all happening in the 1780 s to

The Evolution Of Hip Hop Culture
According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, language is the system of words or signs that people use
to express thoughts and feelings to each other . Therefore, language can be considered as a form of
human communication. As cultures and societies grow and evolve, language evolves with them too.
Annually, four thousand words are added to the Oxford English Dictionary . Many factors contribute
to the evolution of the English Language such as: technological advances, interaction and exposure to
other languages, and the always evolving contemporary American culture. The hip hop culture greatly
contributes to the semantic change of the English language. You could name practically any problem

Large corporations such as Sprite, Nike, Coca Cola, Reebok, and Burger King featured the hip hop
culture in their advertisements, which is a great way to promote for their products since this was
popular among the people. Also, these advertisements promoted the words that rappers use, so when
people watch the advertisements a lot they would start using such words too. Meanwhile, movies that
present the hip hop culture such as Wild Style, Style Wars, and Beat Street and Breakin exposed the
international audience to hip hop. Not only is the English language changing within the United States,
but it is also changing within foreign English speakers. For instance, in Egypt, many people use words
such as dude and man which originally came from the hip hop culture. Furthermore, there are many
rappers in Egypt that rap in English such as Arabian Knightz. In conclusion, the everyday evolving
American culture changes the English language and how words are used. The hip hop culture greatly
contributed to such evolution. Not only hip hop affect the American culture but also other
international cultures. After all, Hip hop gave a generation a common ground that didn t require either

Introduction
There is a time bomb that is ready to go off, possibly within our lifetime; this device is constructed not
by terrorist but by an ever increasing world population. In an effort to combat its own population
problem, China has promoted policies with the intent of slowing down the growth rate of that nation s
approximately 1.3 billion people. The population policies that are be ing adopted raise fundamental
issues concerning human rights. Does a government have the right to place limits on the size of the

Essay On The Controversy Of Voices In The Media
Inclusion is a major issue, and will continue to be an issue in today s media. Yes, there is an array of
voices in the media, but the positive voices and stories often get overshadowed by negativity. There s
a misconception that certain stories are not worthy of being told, or are a too risky. For example, I saw
this first hand while taking one of my television development courses. While some students pushed
for diversity in their made up television shows, others remained close minded about even the smallest
of details, such as casting for their television shows. This was a problem, because they did not see a
problem.
I think the more we push to produce stories that are different from our own, the more it will become
the norm. I don t believe the industry should strive for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, one of Netflix s newest shows, Marvel s Luke Cage, was met with a large amount of
controversy. Many applauded the focus on delicate topics, and the show s timeliness, but a few weary
fans of the series went as far as to comment on the lack of white voices in the television program, and
to display their annoyance with the show s references to political topics. Disney Channel actress,
Zendaya was met with similar backlash after it was announced that she would be playing Mary Jane in
the new Spiderman Homecoming film.
So how do we move past preconceived ideas and prejudices in the media? The answer will change for
each person that you ask. Personally, I believe that as long as realistic stories continue to get produced
and told, we will be one step closer to achieving the goal of inclusivity. It won t happen overnight, or
even all at once, but it will happen. In the future, I hope to keep the discussion of inclusion in the
media going, as well as contribute, by developing content to assure that the media successfully reflects
the various voices, people and ideas of the world that we live

The Renaissance Era
The Renaissance Era took place for a time period that lasted for approximately 150 years and during
that time significant changes took place. These changes were with the Arts, Literature, Fashion, and
ideals. The entire age can be subdivided into three phases: from 1350 to 1400 during which discovery
of ancient texts and experimentation with new art forms took place; 1400 to 1500 typified by political
stability in the Italian city states and the creation of recognizable cultural; and 1500 to 1550 dominated
by foreign invasion and the diffusion of the Italian Renaissance to the rest of western Europe (
Renaissance Society ). The birth of the Renaissance took place in Italy after the most destructive
plagues that caused enormous loss of life and this was the Black Plague (Life in Italy). The plague was
a tragic time which killed so many people and was difficult to survive. Despite the plague, the quality
of life for surviving citizens of the Renaissance may have improved ( Renaissance Society ). Life was
still considered hard in those times. Children were vulnerable to death and diseases and not many
survived into adulthood ( Daily Life ). Those that were born into wealthy families had a better chance
of survival. At that time, children were to act like their parents and they had no rights ( Daily Life ).
Within the Renaissance period the general attitude towards children began to change. These attitude
adjustments can be seen with the changes in the art work

Iron Fertilisation and Algal Blooms
Phytoplankton are the basis of nearly all the Ocean s ecosystems, and require a wide range of
inorganic nutrients in order to grow; notably Carbon, Nitrogen and Phosphorous. They take up these
nutrient elements according to the Redfield Ratio of C : N : P = 106 : 16 : 1. But phytoplankton also
require less obvious nutrients such as calcium, magnesium and potassium. These are often in plentiful
supply in the worlds Oceans, and other factors such as the micronutrient Iron can be the limiting
Phytoplankton growth factor. Iron is not required by Phytoplankton in large amounts, but the Oceans
are deficient of this micronutrient, and without it Phytoplankton cannot grow and reproduce as readily.
This is because Iron is required in the biosynthesis of the pigment chlorophyll, required by
Phytoplankton in order to photosynthesise. With a deficiency in Iron, Phytoplankton can suffer from a
lack of chlorophyll known as chlorosis. The protein ferredoxin contains Iron and is substituted for
flavodoxin as an iron stress response (when Iron levels are low). It can be shown that Phytoplankton
are Iron deficient by measuring how much of this electron transfer protein flavodoxin is present.
Iron s role in phytoplankton growth was first identified in the 1930 s by an English biologist named
Joseph Hart. However it was not until 1988 when the Iron Fertilisation Hypothesis was suggested, in
an article in the January edition of the scientific journal Nature. It was submitted by John Martin who

The Themes Of Courage In The Book Thief By Markus Zusak
Themes are inserted within literature by the author in an attempt to provoke readers to think about the
topic provided. In the novel, The Book Thief, written by Markus Zusak, many topics are presents,
such as, courage, suffering, and human behavior. The most prevalent, however, is the courage
possessed by certain individuals. This theme, bravery, is evident throughout the entire course of the
novel in Liesel Meminger, the Hubermanns, and Max Vandenburg. Liesel Meminger, coined The
Book Thief , exhibits extraordinary acts of courage within the literary work. Since birth, Meminger
has faced hardships; she deals with the absence of her father, the death of her younger brother, and the
abandonment by her mother all within several years. These adversities lead to the development of
Meminger s courageous nature, which she displays throughout the novel. Acts of her courage include
stealing books and trusting the Hubermanns After attending her brother s funeral, Liesel notices that
one of the gravediggers has dropped a novel. Looking around to make sure no one is watching her, she
collects the book and hides it; stealing this book ignites the fire and desire inside of her to learn how to
read and expand her knowledge. After Liesel Meminger arrives to the Hubermanns house in
Molching, Germany, she has to be coaxed out of the car. Finally, Hans Hubermann, later known as
Papa, is the successor in luring the child out of the car, he immediately gains her trust, unlike his cold
counterpart, Rosa Hubermann. Despite Rosa s foul mouth and direct orders, Saumensch. You call me
Mama when you talk to me (Zusak 35), Liesel eventually learns to trust and love her. Learning to love
and to trust the Hubermanns shows how courageous Liesel truly is since she had previously faced the
abandonment/death of two parents. Hans and Rosa Hubermann are driven by bravery throughout the
entire course of The Book Thief and are perhaps the most courageous characters within the novel.

History Of The Bubonic Plague
When a matter such as the Bubonic Plague strikes in a world unexposed to the current technology and
information citizens tend to create false cures and treatments. These treatments are highly dangerous
and unhygienic. A common treatment used was bloodletting, which was the act of extracting blood
from a patient to remove the disease. Similar to bloodletting was boil lancing which is when you take
a knife to slice the buboes until they bursted. Buboes were a symptom of the Bubonic Plague
described as a swollen inflamed lymph node. Others however believed in superstitious practices, for
example burning aromatic herbs and bathing in rose water or vinegar. Some more eccentric treatments
included witchcraft and potion making which many were persecuted for practicing. Now it is known

have the anti seminists who believed that Jews were the ones to blame for the spreading of the disease.

The side effects were very similar to the common everyday flu consisting of fever, chills, vomiting,
diarrhea, and dire aches and pains. The differentiating factor between the two was the Buboes that we
mentioned earlier, also known as plague boils, that appear on the skin under the armpits or on the
groin. The Buboes could reach up to the size of an egg, or even an apple. The most surprising act of
the Bubonic Plague was how quickly this disease took the life of the affected individual. Even the the
most healthy, could contract the massive epidemic at any give

A Brief Note On Federal Information Processing Standards
that the right source be notified to ensure that the issue is addressed quickly. Successful enforcement
of all instruction is intended to produce the information security needed to produce a healthy
infrastructure.
Compliance is very important, but not easily accomplished. It entails consistent updates to keep up
with the daily issues such as security breaches and managers not doing their jobs. Though not on the
federal level, both Home Depot and Target are current examples of large corporations that were not
ensuring that their systems were updated consistently to maintain compliance. Their lack of such

The OPM breach, one of the largest reported on federal government systems, was detected in April
2015, partly through the use of the Department of Homeland Security s (DHS s) Einstein system an
intrusion detection system that screens federal Internet traffic to identify potential cyber threats. This
and other breaches have not brought about successful litigation, though lawyers for those affected by
the breaches are citing a violation of The Privacy Act, section 552a of title 5, which governs the means
by which federal agencies and, in some instances, their contractors collect, maintain, use, and
disseminate individually identifiable information in a system of records. Unlike FISMA, The Privacy
Act authorizes an individual to bring a civil action in federal district court whenever an agency fails to
comply with the Privacy Act or a related rule in such a way as to have an adverse effect on an
individual , according to Is There a Judicial Remedy for Victims of Federal Data Breaches? (2015),
plaintiffs must prove that there has been both an intentional or willful act leading to the breach and be
able to demonstrate that he or she has suffered actual damages, a term of art recently interpreted by the
Supreme Court to exclude damages for mental or emotional distress. According to this same

Characteristics Of The High Renaissance
This research paper looks at the High Renaissance and the artists that it had produced during this
period. During this time period there were three individuals that had dominated the art world. These
three artists are Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael. Even though this paper discusses
about the High Renaissance and the three who dominated it, the main focus of the paper is on
Leonardo Da Vinci. Even though he mad such famous paintings, he was not a prolific painter; he was
prolific draftsman as well as a great engineer, architect, inventor, and scientist. Besides having many
famous paintings, Da Vinci also had thousands of drawings, sketches, and doodles that he is famous
for. The drawings contained many notes of what he was interested. There are drawings of the study of
the human body, of his inventions and just things he see is interesting. In art history, the High
Renaissance period refers to a short period in which there was an exceptional artistic production in the
Italian states. The reason why this part of the Reniasance period is called the High Renaissance is
because it has been seen as the time in which the artistic aim and goals of the Renaissance has reached
their greatest application (n.d.). The High Renaissance style was the dominant art style during 16th
century Italy. Many historians believe that three individuals dominated this time period of art. These
individuals are Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael. The oldest of the three was Leonardo
Da Vinci
Leonardo Da Vinci was a universal genius. He was not only just the best painter of the world at the
time, but he was also known as a great inventor, architect, engineer and scientist. Even though he was
great in many fields, he is mostly known from his achievements as the painter of many famous
Renaissance art masterpieces.
Da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452 near the village of Vinci, which is 25 miles away from Florence.
Da Vinci was the illegitimate son of a local of Florence and a prominent notary Florence, Ser Piero Da
Vinci. Not much of his childhood is known, but as a teen he became an apprentice of Andrea del
Verrochio, the leading artist of Florence and the early Reniassance (2017). Later on Leonardo

Socrates, Man of Many Colors
Socrates, the Man of Many Colors The Last Days of Socrates contains a series of dialogues with
Socrates in the run up to his trial, where he is sentenced to death. Plato, the author, was inspired by
Socrates. Plato was a student of his and went on to teach many famous people such as Aristotle, who
wrote treatises on everything from poetry to biology, and even Alexander the Great. Plato was born
into a wealthy family around the last days of the Athenian Empire (427 347 B.C.). Plato was also an
advisor to the king of Syracuse. Plato had great influence throughout the history of philosophy, often
being called the father of Western philosophy. He wrote over twenty philosophical dialogues and
thirteen letters ( ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He believes he would be going against his beliefs and character if he chose to escape. The last
dialogue is Phaedo, a beloved disciple of the great teacher. Socrates shows his belief of the
immortality of the soul. This dialogue was the fourth and last detailing the final days of Socrates.
Socrates presents four arguments for the immortality of the soul. First, there is the claim that the soul
is made up of basic forms. Second, the fact that we are born with certain innate knowledge proves that
the knowledge is eternal. Third, people generally agree the soul is different from the body. Fourth, the
soul is by definition living and thus can t die in any meaningful way. At the end of the dialogue,
Socrates is executed by poison hemlock. Phaedo was right by his side until his death. Phaedo said that
, although I was witnessing the death of someone who was my friend, I had no feeling of pity, for the
man appeared happy both in manner and words, as he died nobly and without fear (p. 212). I was
personally intrigued by the entire book. While the read was somewhat difficult to follow, I knew that it
being such a true story and a part of so much of our history, I couldn t put it down. I gained such an
overwhelming sense of understanding for Socrates after reading The Last Days of Socrates. I believe
if I had to recommend a starter book for Ancient Philosophy I would definitely recommend

Public Education System
Introduction Hook Background I think that there are many things that we in America can do to fix our
education system but to go over two generalized topics we must reevaluate our teachers and how we
work our system in general. These two are the most important factors besides the students , and
teachers directly affect those so I m going to start there.
Of all the important things for teachers to do is to teach and to make students get into the things that
they re learning. That usually doesn t happen as most of the good and enthusiastic teachers are in rich
schools and the teachers that are under qualified and do not care about students get put at the schools
that are underfunded. To remedy this you must make sure that equally qualified ... Show more content

By hiring Betsy DeVos and other idiots who want to devalue education as the people who run the
system will obviously make the system turn into one of the worst school systems in the world. These
people who have no interest and what would be good for the students , are only focused on the bank
check at the end of the day. They want what will make them big bucks. Going along with that , we also
put way too much money into the military , thus taking away crucial funds that should go to the
education system. Instead of letting incompetent presidents chose incompetent cabinet members we
should allow the people to vote ,as we do with any other elected position. It would allow us to choose
the right Leader for the job and not one who wants to make it harder for underprivileged children and
young adults to get the education that they deserve. Another thing we should do to make the Education
system better you to start focusing more on making the education system one that values learning over
test scores. Some school districts are already doing that as they are switching over to project based
learning from text based. It removes the proverbial shackles of the dreaded end of the year test from
students who already hate it enough as it is. It is the cause of why students hate going to school as
most of our education is derivative of the learning targets which are the different points of the
Standards of learning, our states standardised

  • 2. Native American Culture In The 18th And 19th Century In the United States, there are over 500 federally recognized American and Native tribes. All which study and practice their own set of cultures and values. Religion, language, food and way of dress are what makes every tribe different in their own unique way. The Indian Wars of both the 18th and 19th century caused many of these tribes to relocate thus causing them to not only lose their homelands but also their cultural identity. Native Americans were prohibited from practicing religion and cultural ceremonies. This caused a recession in youth obtaining the knowledge to keep their cultural renaissance alive and pass on their tribal dialects to future generations. Today, however Native Americans are thriving at branding their youth with generation after generation of language, religion, ceremonial tradition etc. The Native American culture ... Young females were considered women at very young ages and were expected to get married and bear children. The men would go out and work to put food on the table. In the Native Culture, it was the same, however native men would go out and hunt while the native women would stay behind and tend to the children and work. • 3. Ph-Amylase Lab Report The Effect of pH levels on the Rate of Activity of ⍺ Amylase Ryan Andrew Introduction: Enzymes are some of the most important chemicals in the human body. Without them, humans and many other organisms would simply be unable to live. Our dependence on enzymes comes from their nature as biological catalysts, substances that speed up chemical reactions without being used up or changed (Worthington biochem.com, 2017). They allow chemical reactions in our body to occur at a rate that is acceptable for our cells metabolism (Worthington biochem.com, 2017). Enzymes are able to do this by binding to their substrate or substrates, the molecules they react with, and either breaking it down or combining them to form a new molecule (Wilbraham et ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Amylase is the name of a group of enzymes that break starch down into smaller molecules like maltose or glucose (Encyclopedia Britannica, 1998). ⍺ amylase is the amylase that is found in many mammals, including humans, in whom it can be found in saliva or the small intestine (Encyclopedia Britannica, 1998). As this is such an important topic for the world, many studies have been done to investigate the effects of pH on amylase. Two such experiments, one by Supannapong et al., and one by Tizon, Serrano and Traifalgar, both found that amylase activity peaked somewhere between a pH of 6 and 7, which fits in with most of the information available on this enzyme (2007; 2012). The aim of this experiment was to investigate the effect that different pH levels had on the rate of activity of the enzyme ⍺ amylase. It was hypothesised that pH levels below and above 7 would result in a consistent decrease in the ability of the amylase to break starch down into glucose, and therefore the rate of activity of amylase and the amount of glucose in the solution, until the amylase became denatured to the point at which it no longer could react with the starch, at which point the reaction would stop, and further changes in pH level would have no effect. This is because ⍺ amylase s natural environment, in saliva or near the pancreas, has a pH level of approximately 7 (Worthington biochem.com, 2017). As such, any notable shift from a pH level of 7 will result in increasing levels of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Babylon Revisited Alcoholism In 1931, Fitzgerald published Babylon Revisited in the Saturday Evening Post. The 18th amendment was still in effect until 1933. The way that this story portrays alcohol was still based on a prohibition era way of thinking, but looking back on the raucous living of the twenties. Fitzgerald s own experiences with alcoholism and the consequences of it after the boom heavily influenced this story. Regardless, it is still valuable as an example of contradiction because it shows prohibitionist thought by warning against the dangers of alcoholism while exaggerating alcohol s prevalence. This story takes place in France and some may argue that there is the possibility that French culture influenced these characters more than American culture. The main reasoning behind this claim is that drinking was legal in France and therefore might have been more popular. However, according to an article in The New York Times, the opposite was true. The author writes, I saw no drunken people in Europe except a couple of young Americans in London who were a bit lively...I have seen plenty in American cities who were staggering drunk and have seen nothing of the kind in England, France, Germany or Italy (Hahn). • 5. Piano Reflection Everything was progressing smoothly as my fingers traversed the terrain of my upright piano until, inevitably, an all too familiar, jarring chord rang from its core. Although I wanted nothing more than to disregard my repeated blunder and never look back, I knew that this strategy would fall short when I performed the piece for my teacher the following day. So with perseverance, focus, and fear of a disapproving glare, I managed to play it through faultlessly. Now all that remained was the small task of playing the piece an additional four times in a row with that same impeccable accuracy. Upon realizing the amount of work ahead of me, I mentally kicked myself for not starting sooner and lengthened my timer from the remaining twelve minutes to another thirty. It was time to woodshed this until I got it right every time. Playing the piano has been a rewarding experience for me throughout my life for not only granting me the skill of playing, but also for teaching me lessons that can be applied to my academic and personal life. One of the most valuable lessons I have learned from piano is the ability of breaking down a seemingly unsolvable problem into its basic components or, in the terms of my piano teacher, woodshedding. For non musicians, woodshedding might be an unfamiliar term and may even sound fictitious, but rest assured, it is a legitimate word denoting the practice of an instrument. However, my piano teacher had a more distinct interpretation. The first time I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In short, Democrats believe in giving immigrants the opportunity to enhance our nation by contributing to their communities and workforces, offering them an education, and strengthening social values by keeping families together instead of deporting them. Their main goal is to form a road to citizenship in which illegal immigrants can make their lives here permanent as legal American citizens. On the other hand, Republicans have a much stronger view on the necessary enforcements and restrictions that should be placed upon the flow of illegal immigrants. They believe that there is a defined line between legal immigration and illegal immigration that is causing the immigration system to fall apart. Along with other theories two most popular ones were created. First of them is the labour theory of value mainly known from the writings of Adam Smith, David Ricardo and Karl Marx. Despite the fact that their views on value had minor differences, their main idea was that with few exceptions the quantity of labour employed on commodities determines the rate at which they will exchange for each other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Probably the most commonly used and basic economic method to determine prices of a commodity is the supply and demand method. While this method states that both demand and supply are equally important and it is their intersection that determines the price of a good, both theories of value emphasize only one function of this model. As the advocates of labour theory cared mostly about the inputs of production, they mainly focused on the supply side. For example, Ricardo mentioned in his letter to Malthus it is supply which regulates value and supply is itself controlled by comparative cost of production. (Ricardo, 1951, 279). In contrast the theory of marginal utility states that it is not the supply but demand that is the main factor in the supply demand model. This theory emphasizes the importance of the consumer attitude towards the good and what kind of value does it provide for him. Its supporters pointed out that despite how much labour is used to provide certain good or service without demand it will be worthless. The supporters of the utility theory of value such as Jevons and Menger sometimes ignored supply and based their theories exclusively on the demand and made assumptions supposing that the rate of supply was given rather than changing (Landreth Colander, 2001). • 19. Causes Of Migrant Labor In The Philippines Introduction Approximately 10 12 million Filipinos work as migrants abroad; the number of people leaving the country to find work is so high that migration is a regular part of life in the Philippines (Pardis, 121). Due to deeply embedded structural flows of capital and labor present in postcolonial/neocolonial economic arrangements, the Philippines depend on migrant labor as a significant export (Pardis, 123). The combination of neoliberal policies and globalization result in push and pull forces across portions of societies and national borders that motivate migration in search of employment or safety, such as increasing poverty and anemic development, causing the Philippines to rely significantly on migrant labor to strengthen the domestic economy. (Pardis, 143). The heavy reliance on migrant labor has created, in some instances, a situation of forced migration that renders potential migrants at risk of being a trafficked person prone to exploitation as cheap labor, bonded workers, or prostitutes (Saat, 137). Aspirant migrants depend on others to facilitate their movement, making them susceptible to criminal intentions of those offering work opportunities abroad and organizing travel requirements (Kempadoo, 74). Though the nature of these laws did not outright target certain races or social classes, a disproportionate amount of the individuals sterilized were non white or of immigrant background. Prominent eugenicists and eugenic organizations in the U.S. played a key role in lobbying for state sterilization laws. Harry H. Laughlin, superintendent of the Eugenics Record Office, drafted the American Model Eugenical Sterilization Law in 1922, which served as a model for many sterilizations laws in the states (Berenbaum, 1998). By 1926, 23 states had passed sterilization laws that were voluntary and/or involuntary in nature (Sofair, 2000). Laughlin and other eugenicists called for the sterilization of institutionalized individuals under the assertion that their genetically inferior traits would be passed to their progeny and be an economic drain on the state. Many states complied, and by 1935 over 30 states had some form of sterilization law with over 21,000 compulsory sterilizations performed (Allen 1997). One historical period that stands out in regards to the richness of the culture, as well as the progressions in civilization, is the Renaissance era. Culture was a huge part of the Renaissance era. The vast artistic styles in all aspects of life during this time made for such a cultural focus. The Renaissance era was called a rebirth of cultural awareness; theatre was a large part of this, including Shakespeare s Globe Theatre. To understand the role theatre played in shaping the Renaissance era one must understand what exactly the Renaissance was. The Renaissance is normally thought to have begun in Italy during the fourteenth century and to have ended in the late sixteenth century (Atlas). The Renaissance was described as a movement that affected all aspects of culture, literature, and scholarship as well as painting, sculpture and architecture and that consciously sought to recover and revive the achievements of classical antiquity (Atlas). The diffusion of Renaissance culture from Italy to Europe was made possible partly by the way Renaissance culture had diffused and changed within Italy (Atlas). When the Renaissance movement reached Europe the English Renaissance began. This is thought to have occurred in the early sixteenth century continuing until the early seventeenth century. In the article, Lee tells of his time working as an anthropologist in the Kalahari and studying the hunting and gathering subsistence economy of the !Kung Bushmen. Lee (1969) writes: The Bushmen s idea of the Christmas story, stripped to its essentials, is praise the birth of white man s god chief ; what keeps their interest in the holiday high is the Tswana Herero custom of slaughtering an ox for his Bushmen neighbors as an annual goodwill gesture. Lee (1969) writes: Yes, when a young man kills much meat he comes to think of himself as a chief or a big man, and he thinks of the rest of us as his servants or inferiors. We can t accept this. We refuse one who boasts, for someday his pride will make him kill somebody. So we always speak of his meat as worthless. This way we cool his heart and make him gentle. Though my boycott never lasted longer than a few days, it was an indication of my strength. People resented my presence at the water hole, yet simultaneously dreaded my leaving. The people known as the Marshallese are the natives to these islands. Overtime other cultures began to settle on these islands also, such as the Spanish, Japanese, and Americans. Out of these three cultures the Americans were the most domineering and devastating to the Marshallese people. The Americans took over the Marshallese native land and forced all of them to live on one island in deplorable conditions. The Marshallese had their freedom revoked from them; they then had to live under the Americans rules. That was when blood came up from the mouth of the mermaid on Good Friday, 1981 (Barclay 262). I think this is Rujen s first sign that he has belief that there is still hope for the Marshallese. Rujen performed this act of killing the dolphin, because the Marshallese people believe that it is bad luck to not kill any dolphin that came into the lagoon. This is Rujen s way of standing up for the traditions and culture he was brought up in. If Rujen did not perform this task, the Americans were going to make it a law that it was illegal to kill dolphins. The fact that Rujen got away with this task, gives all Marshallese people hope that their traditions can still be performed. The second sign of Rujen s hope in this story is shown in the following passage, How could a Marshallese be trespassing on a Marshallese island? The ticket filled Rujen with an unbearable loathing of the ignorant man who had written it. He waved the ticket in front of Oly s face, nearly slapping him with it. • 29. Amazing Grace Play Analysis On July 22nd, 2015, I was given the opportunity to witness a remarkable Broadway Play, called Amazing Grace. I attended this play along with my fellow peers from the Rutgers College of Nursing EOF program. This was the first time for most of my peers along with myself to attend a Broadway show. Amazing Grace depicts the issue of slavery during the 1780s and the early 1800s. The main character John Newton faced many challenges throughout the play and in the end he overcomes those hindrances by realizing slavery degraded human beings. One of the features that made the play exciting was the sound effect. Throughout the play, there were many sound effects of gunshots, the ocean, and storms. However, John Newton s friend, an African American slave, saved him and swam up to the shore. During this scene there was a screen, which came down in front of the stage, and the effects made it look similar to a view from under the ocean. Behind the screen one could see Thomas grabbing onto John Newton and swimming up toward the surface of the water. While some students pushed for diversity in their made up television shows, others remained close minded about even the smallest of details, such as casting for their television shows. Iron Fertilisation and Algal Blooms Phytoplankton are the basis of nearly all the Ocean s ecosystems, and require a wide range of inorganic nutrients in order to grow; notably Carbon, Nitrogen and Phosphorous. They take up these nutrient elements according to the Redfield Ratio of C : N : P = 106 : 16 : 1. But phytoplankton also require less obvious nutrients such as calcium, magnesium and potassium. These are often in plentiful supply in the worlds Oceans, and other factors such as the micronutrient Iron can be the limiting Phytoplankton growth factor. Iron is not required by Phytoplankton in large amounts, but the Oceans are deficient of this micronutrient, and without it Phytoplankton cannot grow and reproduce as readily. This is because Iron is required in the biosynthesis of the pigment chlorophyll, required by Phytoplankton in order to photosynthesise. With a deficiency in Iron, Phytoplankton can suffer from a lack of chlorophyll known as chlorosis. The protein ferredoxin contains Iron and is substituted for flavodoxin as an iron stress response (when Iron levels are low). It can be shown that Phytoplankton are Iron deficient by measuring how much of this electron transfer protein flavodoxin is present. Iron s role in phytoplankton growth was first identified in the 1930 s by an English biologist named Joseph Hart. • 45. Socrates, Man of Many Colors Socrates, the Man of Many Colors The Last Days of Socrates contains a series of dialogues with Socrates in the run up to his trial, where he is sentenced to death. Plato, the author, was inspired by Socrates. Plato was a student of his and went on to teach many famous people such as Aristotle, who wrote treatises on everything from poetry to biology, and even Alexander the Great. Plato was born into a wealthy family around the last days of the Athenian Empire (427 347 B.C.). Plato was also an advisor to the king of Syracuse. Plato had great influence throughout the history of philosophy, often being called the father of Western philosophy. He wrote over twenty philosophical dialogues and thirteen letters ( ... Socrates shows his belief of the immortality of the soul. This dialogue was the fourth and last detailing the final days of Socrates. Socrates presents four arguments for the immortality of the soul. First, there is the claim that the soul is made up of basic forms. Second, the fact that we are born with certain innate knowledge proves that the knowledge is eternal. Third, people generally agree the soul is different from the body. Fourth, the soul is by definition living and thus can t die in any meaningful way. At the end of the dialogue, Socrates is executed by poison hemlock. Phaedo was right by his side until his death. Phaedo said that , although I was witnessing the death of someone who was my friend, I had no feeling of pity, for the man appeared happy both in manner and words, as he died nobly and without fear (p. 212). I was personally intrigued by the entire book. While the read was somewhat difficult to follow, I knew that it being such a true story and a part of so much of our history, I couldn t put it down. I gained such an overwhelming sense of understanding for Socrates after reading The Last Days of Socrates. I believe if I had to recommend a starter book for Ancient Philosophy I would definitely recommend ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Public Education System Introduction Hook Background I think that there are many things that we in America can do to fix our education system but to go over two generalized topics we must reevaluate our teachers and how we work our system in general. These two are the most important factors besides the students , and teachers directly affect those so I m going to start there. Of all the important things for teachers to do is to teach and to make students get into the things that they re learning. That usually doesn t happen as most of the good and enthusiastic teachers are in rich schools and the teachers that are under qualified and do not care about students get put at the schools that are underfunded. To remedy this you must make sure that equally qualified ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By hiring Betsy DeVos and other idiots who want to devalue education as the people who run the system will obviously make the system turn into one of the worst school systems in the world. These people who have no interest and what would be good for the students , are only focused on the bank check at the end of the day. They want what will make them big bucks. Going along with that , we also put way too much money into the military , thus taking away crucial funds that should go to the education system. Instead of letting incompetent presidents chose incompetent cabinet members we should allow the people to vote ,as we do with any other elected position. It would allow us to choose the right Leader for the job and not one who wants to make it harder for underprivileged children and young adults to get the education that they deserve. Another thing we should do to make the Education system better you to start focusing more on making the education system one that values learning over test scores. Some school districts are already doing that as they are switching over to project based learning from text based. It removes the proverbial shackles of the dreaded end of the year test from students who already hate it enough as it is. It is the cause of why students hate going to school as most of our education is derivative of the learning targets which are the different points of the Standards of learning, our states standardised ...
