Radiographic Stereotypes
Radiolucent lesions seen on radiographs develop from both odontogenic and non odontogenic
structures. They characterize a broad spectrum of lesions (Avril et al., 2013) A sequential study of all
the radiographic characteristics of the image helps ensure recognition and collection of all the
information contained in the image and in turn improves the accuracy of interpretation. Analysis of
any image should include: Step 1: Localize the anomaly Step 2: Assess the periphery and shape Step
3: Analyse the internal structure Step 4: Analyse the effects of the lesion on peripheral structures. A
radiolucent lesion in the mandibular premolar region can have the following differential diagnosis; 1.

Acute/Chronic apical periodontitis. 3. Periapical abscess: Small or large radiolucent area, ill defined or
diffused, may have cortical expansion in chronic situations. Associated tooth will have extensive
caries or restoration involving or in close proximity to pulp space. Will have associated widening of
the Periodontal Ligament Space. Pulp vitality tests are needed to confirm diagnosis. 4. Periapical
granuloma: Well circumscribed, rounded (around apex). May have a thin radio opaque border, tooth
involved will most likely have deep carious lesion or restoration in close proximity to pulp space.
Tooth will be non vital. 5. Periapical cyst: Similar to a granuloma, the differentiation may not be
possible unless other distinctiveness of a cyst, such as displacement of contiguous structures and
expansion of the external cortical boundaries of the jaw, are seen. Lesions larger than 1 cm in diameter
usually are radicular cysts. Other periapical radiolucencies to consider are an early stage of Periapical
cemental dysplasia and an apical scar or a surgical defect because in such cases, normal bone may
never fill in the defect completely. The patient s history helps with the

Mitchell And Trenchard s Influence On The Development Of...
National security requirements exercised the most significant influence on the development of
airpower in Europe and the United States before the Second World War (WWII), because nations on
both sides of the Ocean had to cope with the multifaceted disastrous results of World War I (WWI)
and airpower seemed to be the answer for future wars. Primarily, understanding the context and
consequences of WWI is vital to apprehend airpower theorist like Douhet, Mitchell and Trenchard and
their revolutionary thoughts on airpower. The development of aircraft in the at the beginning of the
twentieth century challenged not only military leadership but national security of modern states. The
basic question was: How will aerial bombing of enemy territory fit ... Show more content on

He was mainly influenced by the ideas of airpower from the Italian General Douhet. Likewise, he
postulated the potency of airpower and considered as the most decisive element in future wars.
Further, he argued, that airpower would make Army and Naval forces almost superfluous. The United
States, other than Great Britain, had a different perspective of its geopolitical situation. Because of the
two Oceans on either side of their country, felt they could afford to be more complacent about
developments in aviation. Although General Mitchell was a strong proponent for strategic bombing
American airmen had a more distant perspective on bomber aircraft and the use in future wars. But,
both, British and American airpower theorist believed that bombers are an offensive weapon.
According to the American national security guideline bomber aircraft, especially shortly after WWI,
would be employed as a defensive weapon. Mitchell argued, that airpower, by making wars shorter,
would offer a way around the stalemate and slaughter seen in the Great war. This clearly underpins
how Mitchell visualized and enforced national security requirements. Similar to the British reaction to
the rise of Nazi Germany during the mid 1930s, Congress endorsed increasing expenditures for the US
Army Air Corps: From 30 million in 1935 to over 83 million in 1939. Additionally, key actors

Cause And Effect Of Chacxulub Impact
Chicxulub Impact
By Talullah Lennon
The Cause:
An Asteroid is formed in the inner solar system in a particular part called the Asteroid Belt, when
small particles of rock and metal collide with each other, and slowly build up over time. Planets are
formed the same way as asteroids, but what stops asteroids from growing and becoming a planet is
due to the gravitationally pull of Jupiter. The asteroid belt lies between Jupiter and mars. Because of
Jupiter s gravitationally pull the asteroid goes at a highly increased speed causing it to crash into other
asteroids in the belt, the result of this is either the asteroids bounce off one another or they break off
and don t stick together. The asteroid belt contains billions of asteroids in all different sixes. Majority
are reasonable small around the size of a large bolder but on occasion there are asteroids that are
humongous just like the Chicxulub asteroid

The asteroid instantaneously made a hole that was 100km wide and 30km deep. Experts say that it hit
at the same energy as 100 million atomic bombs and left behind a 100 mile wide scar known today as
the Chicxulub creator Many scientists believe that the impact of the Chicxulub asteroid played a big
part in the KT Extinction which was the extinction of almost all life on earth, including the dinosaurs.
When the bowl collapsed it left behind a 200km creator across and a couple of km deep. Later, on the
centre of the crater rebounder and collapsed again , this time it produced an inner ring. Now days a
larger percentage of the creator is buried offshore, under about 600m of sediments. The parts of the
crater that are still on land are cover in limestone and at the rim of the crater there is an arc of

Great Assyrians And Egyptian Pharaohs
Throughout art history many rulers have faced the same problems that come to even the most common
of people. No matter how much power a dynasty ruler gained, they could not feel and ensure for
themselves a valiant future after death. Great Assyrians and Egyptian Pharaohs alike wanted to ensure
their absolute power in this life and the next. From art they could make sure that their image would
have the best chance of surviving even after they themselves have passed away. In eras where a new
ruler could change and deplete the entire region, art was a long lasting image and message that would
translate and stay with the perceiver. Art containing pictures of idealistic animals inferred an absolute
image of power and respect no matter what the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In either case it is from the same area and Mesopotamian era. During this time art was mostly military,
and the most important parts of the palace were stored with scenes of war and chase (Delaporte). A

Plaque Carved in Relief with a Griffin in a Floral Landscape is a square plaque measuring 7.8 cm by
6.1 cm, and carved out of ivory from an elephant tusk, most likely from African elephants imported
from south of Egypt (The Met.). The picture on the face of the plaque is of a griffin, an animal having
the head and wings of an eagle attached to a body and hindquarters of a lion ( Griffin ). The griffin
shown has sharp talons and beak with pointed eyes. Lions were repeatedly seen throughout Assyrian
artwork (Ascalone). The muscular legs and abdomen paired with a strong neck and flanks gave a
symbolic image of the ideal solider or army. People in this era knew how lions would have appeared
face to face, untamed and never enclosed. To a people with needed protection from lions, their image
represented a dominance and power. Two tenons, or pieces of wood that would have joined this
artwork with another, suggest that there were more works of art surrounding it (The Met.). Other
animals were also symbolic and literal figures for the Assyrians as they could represent tributes of
power to characteristics such as being regal. For example, the

Survivorship Gap Gender
(3a) From Figure 1, we can clearly see a distinct separation in the survivorship curves between males
and females of the post 1950 population at around age 51, where females show higher rates of
survivorship than males; however, this obvious sex gap does not occur in a pre 1910 comparison of
gender mortality. Instead, the pre 1910 survivor ship curves for both genders begin to oscillates near
similar survivorship values at age 31, which could be the result of environmental variation during that
time period. Nonetheless, the maximum longevity of women surpasses that of men in both
populations. (3b) Studies have shown the effects of social relations on psychological wellbeing, where

Hunger French Revolution
Hunger was pushed out of the tall houses, in the wretched clothing that hung upon poles and lines;
Hunger was patched into them with straw and rag and wood and paper; Hunger was repeated in every
fragment of the small modicum of firewood that the man sawed off; Hunger stared down from the
smokeless chimneys, and started up from the filthy street that had no offal, among its refuse, of
anything to eat. Hunger was the inscription on the baker s shelves, written in every small loaf of his
scanty stock of bad bread; at the sausage shop, in every dead dog preparation that was offered for sale

fewer than two gold watches in his pocket, emulative of the noble and chaste fashion set by

France during this time were hated immensely, they were exempt from taxes, had enough food,
clothes, money, and mansions while the third estate suffered. Many nobles were cruel and spent their
money lavishly on luxuries, treating the common people poorly, like the Monseigneur who was so
well hated and ended up being murdered. Then there were people who were related to the nobles who
had all the money, those people by blood were executed for doing nothing to help the lower class
while still technically being innocent ( French Revolution ).The relatives of nobles like Charles
Darnay were imprisoned and killed for being related to someone with money. Though many were
killed for their place in society the middle class, like Dr. Manette were left alone usually because they
had no quarrel with either side and actually gained wealth during the French Revolution (Dickens). By
the middle and end of the revolution many people were killed and revolutionaries continued to kill
people for petty crime because of the harsh laws put in place by Robespierre (Encyclopedia
Britannica). Those who had been greedy with the staves of the cast, had acquired a tigerish smear

The Prelude by William Wordsworth
Man s journey through life is poignantly influenced by the perspective he embraces. A perspective acts
as a lens to view the world, swaying one s way of thinking and decision making. This perspective is
constantly tested by the prolonged process of maturation that continues with age. The Romantic period
ceded a break from intellectual conformity towards emancipation; it marked a radical shift in popular
thinking, resulting in the growth in the value of literature, art and nature. Young Wordsworth s life
during this inquisitive time establishes a unique context in which to describe the relation between one
s experiences and one s developing views. Wordsworth s life work, The Prelude, articulates his
perspective on life as he engages in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Though the early 1800 s mark the peak of Romanticism, ironically, they also mark the time of the
Industrial Revolution. The love of humanity and nature present in Romantic thought is juxtaposed by
increasing urbanization and entrepreneurship in Great Britain. Unique to Wordsworth, he is able to
relate to not only the Romanticism spreading in France, but the rise of industrialism in Great Britain.
The contrast present between these two movements forces Wordsworth s opinions to culminate in a
more convicted worldview. Following Wordsworth s life of simplicity in London, his return to France
marks the beginning of the most influential development of his perspective. Wordsworth s connection
to the French Revolution largely shapes his views of man and tests his optimism of man s true nature.
During his visits to sites like the Bastille and the Palais Royale intricately connected to the French
revolution contrasting emotions of hope and fear emerge into Wordsworth s thinking. Wordsworth s
political views further develop as he grows in relationship with his favorite French officer, Beaupuy.
The two speak of humanity, politics, and history and their conversations allow the reader to more
easily comprehend Wordsworth s perspective of man. The conversations between Wordsworth and
Beaupuy over humanity communicate Wordsworth s respect and idealization of Beaupuy s character.

Essay On Man s Search For Meaning
A prominent quote in the bible comes from John 8:13 and states, The truth will set you free .
According to this, knowing the truth will free one from the prison of falsehood, and yet the truth is
often accompanied by some form of suffering. Knowing the truth will free someone from the lie they
are living, but it may not be a life they wish to be freed from. In difficult situations, people often rely
on illusion and live in denial as a way to survive, due to the truth being too difficult to accept. In order
to find meaning in one s life while suffering or experiencing a difficult situation, meaning is often
found in illusions and false hoods, rather than in reality. Within Man s Search for Meaning by Viktor
Frankl, The Matrix, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Illusion, it seemed, was the best remedy to survive the horrors of the camps. Frankl used this illusion
to ignore the reality of what he was suffering from in order to find meaning and be able to survive. If
one were to fixate on the horrors of the reality he was living, he would be unable to see a future
outside the camp and therefore a reason to live, ultimately resulting in his demise.
The idea of using illusion to escape the horrors of reality is depicted by Cypher in The Matrix. Cypher
had been awoken by Morpheus and reborn into the real world outside the Matrix. In the movie Cypher
is seen at dinner with Agent Smith, and describes to the agent that ... I know this steak doesn t exist. I
know when I put it in my mouth; the Matrix is telling my brain that it is juicy, and delicious. After
nine years.. you know what I realize? Ignorance is bliss (Wachowski, The Matrix). This is Cypher s
justification for betraying his friends and helping the agents protect the Matrix against Morpheus and
his allies. Cypher was disgusted by the nature of reality in comparison to the blissful illusion that the
Matrix provided, and he was desperate to return to that. Because of this, Cypher, during a mission,
separated himself from the others in the Matrix and returned to reality, shooting Tank and then
unplugging Apoc and Switch to kill them. As he attempted to kill neo, Tank regained consciousness

Gender Roles In The Han Dynasty
Within the Han Dynasty, there were three different social levels: emperor and their family, skilled
workers (farmers and merchants), and unskilled workers (servants and slaves). These three classes
were determined by social and economic standings within each family. The gender roles within the
region saw that women were not viewed as equally as men, for the women s major role was to birth
raise children, and take care of the household. The social class system in the Han Dynasty can be
closely compared to the caste system in present day India since the unskilled are at the bottom while
the more highly people are at the top.
The Han Dynasty was mainly known for its culture and several innovations that many people still use

Biomechanics Of The Tympanic Membrane

BIOE 154: Introduction to Biomechanics
Professor Norman
Biomechanics of the Tympanic Membrane
Background: Over the past years, bioengineers have applied different methods for modelling the
human ear. The human ear is an intricate biomechanical system with its primary function to sound
perception and reception. The ear is divided into 3 main components, each with its own unique
functions: the outer ear (pinna), the middle ear, and the inner ear. The outer ear, or the pinna, consists
of the auricle, the skin covered cartilage of the ear visible on the outside of the head, as well as the
opening to the auditory canal. The middle ear refers the air filled hollow space (tympanic cavity)
behind the eardrum or tympanic membrane. The tympanic membrane is a thin, cone shaped membrane
that separates the outer ear from the middle ear (Figure 1a). The tympanic membrane is made up of
two main parts: the fragile pars flaccida (upper region) and robust the pars tersa (lower region). The
pars tersa, composed of three layers: skin, fibrous tissue, and mucus, makes up the majority of the
tympanic membrane. The pars flaccida is often associated with eustachian tube malfunctions and
choleostomas, whereas the pars tersa is associated with perforations. There are 3 bones, the malleus,
incus, and stapes, in the middle ear (Figure 1b) that vibrate when exposed to the vibrations of the
sound waves. The malleus is attached to the medial surface of the tympanic

People Express Airlines: Rise and Decline
I guess the single predominant reason that I cared about starting a new company was to try and
develop a better way for people to work together . . . that s where the name People Express came
from. Most organizations believe that humans are generally bad and you have to control them and
watch them and make sure they work. At People Express, people will be trusted to do a job until they

The airline industry was viewed as a commodity business, but Burr saw a chance to offer a better
product to customers. (PE believed that customers, rather than passengers, created a more appropriate
mindset.) But taking advantage of deregulation was not the only reason Burr wanted to start the
company: greater, perhaps, was his desire to build a better organization one that was both more
productive and more fun than what he considered to be typical in American business. He was tired of
the politics and the beat them and they ll do more management styles he had seen all his professional
life. He was tired of what he called the deadening grind and lack of vision of T.I. s business style. He
wanted to design a new kind of airline, one that would provide both better and cheaper service, and be
an exciting and rewarding place to work. The focus of the company would be on people: hence its
name, People Express. From its inception, therefore, PE was seen as a chance by Burr and his
management team to experiment with and demonstrate a better way of managing not just an airline,
but any business. While Burr recognized his stance was contrary to the majority of organizations in
the United States, he rejected any insinuation that he was optimistic or soft. I m not a goody two shoes

Catullus Before Death Do Us Analysis
Until Death Do Us Part After a long and perilous journey from Verona, Catullus had finally arrived at
Rome. As he stood by the entrance to that magnificent and intimidating city, his emotions overtook
him like a tempestuous storm. He had left his family and his filial duties in order to pursue a glorious
career in his vocation and avocation: poetry. For Catullus, the small town of Verona was a cultural
wasteland; it suffered from a paucity of playwrights, poets, and prose writers. Only in Rome, with its
diverse and cultured populace, could he truly fulfill his dreams of becoming one of Latin s greatest
poets. Thus, as he stood by the gates of Rome, he felt a mixture of feelings; excitement and
apprehension at the future lying beyond the entranceway s ivory veneer, and a sense of sadness and
melancholia at the past he was forever abandoning. Catullus had not yet taken two full strides in Rome
before being suddenly accosted by a pulchritudinous young lady. Introducing herself as Lesbia, the
voluptuous woman graciously invited Catullus into her house for a meal. Catullus did not hesitate for
a moment to accept Lesbia s invitation, indeed he had little choice; Lesbia s roseate cheeks and
comely features had already put Catullus under her amorous spell. Once inside Lesbia s capacious

One is by the industry and how this subject could affects the local businesses. I personally would feel

International Financial Accounting Standards Board
Introduction
With the number of countries that have switched to the International Financial Reporting Standards
(IFRS) for their financial reporting, as well as the continued efforts made between the IFRS and US
Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP), it is evident that international convergence is
an overall appealing idea for global reporting. With that said, for decades now US GAAP has worked
with IFRS to create a universal standard; and while progress has been made to diminish variances
between the standards, there are still large, if not unattainable efforts ahead of us. The hype over a
proposed uniform set of global accounting standards appears to be stunted by the lost efforts in the
convergence project between the US GAAP and IFRS. As the Financial Accounting Standards Board
(FASB) moves forward with its standards setting, there must be a reevaluation of the goal for
reporting standards and efforts with the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB).
Opinions regarding the optimal direction for the standards boards vary amongst regulators,
practitioners, and academics. Many will argue in support to continue efforts for a uniform set of global
accounting standards and believe this will drive more efficient international business. Those in favor
of a global standard consider it to be in global best interest, and that the standard is worth pursuing for
the long term benefit considering the increasing prevalence of cross border transactions. I agree

What Is The Theme Of Fantasy And Reality In A Streetcar
Tennessee Williams uses various motifs, background music and light to explore the theme of reality vs
fantasy, eventually showing how Blanche loses hold of reality and slips into insanity. Throughout the
play, Blanche struggles to tell between fantasy and reality, because of her strong desire to remain
youthful, protect her status as a Southern Belle and the traumatic memory of Allan s death.
The motif of light represents both the reality of Blanche s past and present self, thus avoiding light
through using the paper lantern and hiding in shadows when interacting with others show how she
cannot face reality, eventually losing hold of reality altogether. When Blanche starts to love Allan, it
feels like you suddenly turned a blinding light on something that had always been half a shadow (p.
56). Thus light reminds her of the times she had with Allan. Blanche says you disgust me (p. 57) after
discovering his homosexuality and he shoots himself after that. This ... Show more content on

believe in it and how she conceals the truth about her past and present self. The song shows her belief
that fantasy can become reality with love. This emphases her belief that by putting up a pure virtuous
facade before Mitch she can make him want her and thus she can finally be dependent on him.
Therefore, this reveals how she chooses to live in a fantasy and deceive both herself and others about
the truth. Her desire to hold on to fantasy leads to her slowly becoming detached from reality and

The Importance Of The CSI Effect On Crime Scene Investigation
Introduction Television has been around for years making money off of the public s interests. Starring
shows such as CSI Miami, Forensic Files, Cold Case, Bones, and many more demonstrate the
procedures of forensic science at active crime scenes. However, these shows have given the wrong
perception of forensic science and the procedures to investigating an active crime scene. These
television shows have made a lasting impact on the public s perception of Crime Scene Investigation
still today. Often times these shows have made it difficult for judges, attorneys, lawyers, and juries to
understand forensic science. CSI Effect Crime Scene Investigations are fascinating to the public and
have been portrayed on television for many years. These television shows have influenced how the
public perceives the procedures of investigating crime scenes. Forensic science and investigating a
crime scene is a very complex and unique career. Television has exaggerated and wrongly influenced

Madonna Of Stairs
Known as one of the greatest artists of the Italian Renaissance, Michelangelo was born on March 6th,
1475 to a noble family in Florentine, Italy. At the age of only 13, Michelangelo was apprenticed to
Domenico Ghirlandaio, and placed him in a studio to learn the fundamentals of art. He only worked
there for about a year after Lorenzo de Medici invited him to his home to work as an artist for them.
One of the most renowned work from his teen years was the marble sculpture called The Madonna of
Stairs , which was famous for the muscle that he applied to the art. After the death of Lorenzo the
Magnificent, Michelangelo traveled to many places, one of them being Rome during the time of Pope
Alexander VI. In 1498, he was commissioned to

Lynch Syndrome
Lynch syndrome, previously known as hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) is a
parental inherited condition that exposes a person to the risks of cancers, but most commonly colon
cancer1 9. It is a heterozygous autosomal dominant genetic condition, which means that if only one
parent carries the gene for Lynch syndrome (LS), then a 50 percent chance of passing on the mutation
will be passed to each child1 9. LS is limited to families with a known pathogenic germline mutation2.
A germline mutation is when mutations occur in the germ line, which is a group of cells that
contribute to the improvement of gametes2,3,10. To find out how individuals are to contract this
disease, the family medical history must be taken into account. Early ... Show more content on

The first role is that there is a predisposition to cancer development, meaning that a mutation in Mlh1
or Msh2 provide alternate causes for LS2,5. These mutations are distinguished because of the presence
of CpG islands and following transcriptional loss of single genetic alleles of the affected gene, which
results in the comparison of a heterozygous mutation2,10. CpG islands are clusters of the sequence
CG which may be gathered near promoter regions in a gene10. Another role is when the Lynch
associated tumors developed as a result a somatic loss of function of the last normal allele of the
mutated gene2. Somatic loss of function is a genetic change that takes place in a somatic cell, but the
change is not aquired2,10. Finally, the last role is the role of more derived epigenetic changes that may
be gained to assist the growth and advancement of associated Lynch tumors2. The studies of these
roles have shown that tumor suppressor genes occur within Lynch syndrome

A Brief Note On The Medical Insurance Specialists
ANALYSIS Jim has reorganized the call center by integrating the senior insurance specialists with the
medical insurance specialists instead of having them divided separately into two groups. The reason
for this change is for the senior insurance specialists to offer guidance to the medical insurance
specialists. Jim requests Dave s OD intervention to address the main problem of missing time
commitments. There are many cases to be worked and complex cases are time consuming. If a case
does not have to be escalated, it can be processed faster. The medical insurance specialists cannot keep
up with the volume of cases and calls to physicians which slow down the process. Also, the majority
of cases are detained with the medical insurance specialists. Hiring additional staff is not in the
budget. Jim thinks that the senior insurance consultants could help the medical insurance specialists
because they are more knowledgeable. Dave requests to observe employees at work prior to the
employee meeting. Dave observes Rosie, a medical insurance specialist, who has cases backed up and
calls on hold which puts her in limbo. Rosie does not want to escalate her cases because she fears
losing her job based on the fact that previous employees were outsourced. She resents the involvement
of senior insurance consultants interfering in her work. Next, Dave observes Carlos, a senior insurance
consultant, who processes complex cases that are very time consuming. Carlos perceives the transition

Environmental problems.
Soil erosion.
In Forests and the end of second millennium in forests in a full world (2001) George M. Woodwell
points out that the most successful civilizations have decayed as forests where destroyed and replaced
with scrublands. The scrublands were further impoverished by intensive grazing and erosion until the
underlying rocks emerged and became the land scape. He goes further giving an example of the
ancient Syria, Persia, throughout the Levant, and the Mediterranean basin, also the decline of the state
known as Greece today was as a result of loss of forests and the impoverishment of the landscape. The
same process happened with respect to Carthage in North Africa.
We also have contemporary examples of land degradation from Haiti and Madagascar, now over
populated and deforested and degraded to the point where their land scape are dysfunctional,
incapable of supporting organized society. The rivers no longer flow in established channels, water
from storms in mountains appears as floods in low lands and carries silt to fill harbors and destroy the
coastal fisheries, so to restore all these problems, there is need to reforest and stabilize the uplands to
regain control of water flows and water quality and to re establish a potentially

Film Analysis Of Casablanca
With the threat of Nazis in Europe, many people flee to a nightclub in Casablanca to acquire illegal
letters that ll allow them to escape to America. The film, Casablanca, takes place during World War II

to travel to neutral Portugal. Ugarte had planned to sell the letters at the club but he couldn t because
he was arrested for killing the messengers and dies being the only one who knows Rick has the letters.

letters from Ugarte, but now has to find an alternative. This all leads to a tough challenge for Rick that

There are two kinds of skepticism, local skepticism, which states that some areas of inquiry don t
allow for knowledge, and global skepticism, which states that we cannot know anything about the
world, (Bogosian). One of the most common arguments for skepticism is the Brain in a Vat argument,
which is very similar to the argument of the Evil Demon who controls us. In opposition to this is a
philosopher by the name of Hilary Putnam, who uses language as proof for us not being brains in vats.
I am going to explain to you why I think that Putnam is correct.
If you cannot be sure that you are not a brain in a vat, then you cannot rule out the possibility of all of
your beliefs about the external world being false. (Bruekner, 2004) I ... Show more content on

In his idea, someone who has never seen a tree, would not automatically call a tree by that name when
they saw it, however while we go through life we call things by their names. (Brueckner, 2004)He
states that if he were a brain in a vat, and he called something a tree it would be no more accurate than
someone who had never seen a table using the word to describe a duck. He uses the simple argument
of:
a. If I am a BIV, then my word tree does not refer to trees.
b. My word tree refers to trees. So,
c. I am not a BIV (Brueckner, 2004)
However, it is also stated that you cannot know that the image and knowledge of trees were not
programmed into the brains in vats, so they could know that the word tree means the image of a tree.
So unfortunately this, like most other Cartesian skepticism arguments, for me at least, is a hard sell. If
I had to decide on one of the two arguments to be the strongest, I would choose the argument against
the idea of brains in vats. This is mostly because I believe that there are too many emotions and
individual decisions that play out in each person s life for us to all actually be brains that are
controlled by a computer or by one person. Every single day we are making hundreds of decisions and
the responses to the same question, when presented to a variety of people vary significantly, and some
of those decisions can change spur of

In pursuit of upward mobility, many educated women have put their personal lives on hold and
focused on their professional lives. This has not always been a completely personal choice; with the
one child policy and the weakening of the danwei system, many urban parents of only child daughters
know that they will have to rely on her for their care later in life. With the best of intentions, but
perhaps shaped by this pragmatic worry, many parents initially encouraged their daughters to focus on
their careers, hoping their daughter is able to achieve a solid, middle class status. However, while
privacy has allowed women to have premarital sex and date more freely, marriage is still the

Cannibalism Essay examples
There are so many bad things in the world but according to many, cannibalism is considered just about
the worst. Depending on your point of view, it rises above even such criminal abominations as, rape
and genocide. Then again, we live in a culture, in which people would run vomiting to the bathroom if
they saw what went into making their McDonald s hamburgers.
Cannibalism, also known as anthropophagi, is defined as the act or practice of eating members of the
same species. The word anthropophagi comes from the Arawakan language name for the Carib
Indians of the West Indies. The Caribs are well known for their practice of cannibalism. Among

Among humans, cannibalism has been widespread in prehistoric societies on all continents. It is still
believed to be practiced in remote areas of the island of New Guinea. It existed until recently in parts
of West and Central Africa, Sumatra, Melanesia, and Polynesia. It also existed among various Indian
tribes of North and South America and among aborigines of Australia and the Maoris of New Zealand.
The reasons for cannibalism have varied. Sometimes there was simply limited food. Some groups
liked the taste of human flesh. However, mostly the reasons had to do with revenge or punishment for
crimes, ceremony and ritual, or magic. Some victorious tribes ate their dead enemies to absorb their
strength. In come rituals, the deceased were eaten by relatives, as a manner of reverence or honor for
their ancestors, or as a desire for the soul of the dead to be reborn in the body of the consumer. This is
called endocannablism.
Civilized people have to resort to cannibalism from time to time, as a mean of survival, under
desperate circumstances. The story of the Donner Party is one of the more tragic incidents in
American frontier history. A group of about 90 immigrants led by George Donner was caught in a
blinding snowstorm in the Sierra Nevada range of California in October 1846. Survivors, who made

Tobacco And Its Effect On America
With such an expansive history in Connecticut, the subject of tobacco is just as encompassing. With
roots in Windsor colonial history through its height in the 1950s, sources try to capture it all at a
surface level. Scholars have studied tobacco over time evaluating its role in the community at that
moment in time. Over a variety of sources, overall the response to tobacco in Windsor has been
positive as it serves as both an economic influence and a cultural one as well. Starting at one of the
most recent sources, Brianna Dunlap looks at the entire Connecticut River valley as the backdrop as
Connecticut s tobacco industry in Connecticut Valley Tobacco. Published in 2016, Dunlap captures
tobacco s history starting at its roots in the 1600s through Cuba s reopening trade ports in 2015. This
book serves to establish Windsor s connection with tobacco and how it changed over time to match the
changing landscape around the tobacco sheds.
Dunlap explains how location was the initial reason that tobacco came and conquered the fields with
access to both the Connecticut and Farmington rivers. She states, for the settlers, this meant access to
trade routes and economic staying power, making the region a modern hub for development. With
immediate access, settlers began quickly to establish Windsor using tobacco as a main export back to
England and throughout the colonies. This platform provides Windsor a booming industry that allows

Similarities Between Jekyll And Dr Moreau
Mad scientists are a popular trope in Western culture. These mad men of science are usually portrayed
as crazed and cruel men who would stop at nothing to get what they want, to the point where they will
hurt other living beings in order to get what they want. The mad scientist archetype existed back when
the first scientists began, when ancient peoples first started to employ the use of the scientific method.
The trope roared into popularity in the Victorian era, where many books such as Frankenstein, Doctor
Jekyll and Mister Hyde, and The Island of Doctor Moreau were published. These books had shaped
the public s perception of both scientific progress and scientists in general. In the books I have studied,
both Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While The Island of Doctor Moreau was a book that harshly criticized vivisections, Jekyll and Hyde
was more of a criticism to scientist at the time where Darwinism was first discovered and popularized.
Jekyll and Hyde focused on the personal ruin of one prideful and ambitious scientist while The Island
of Doctor Moreau had a scientist who had ruined the lives of many animals and a few men.
Furthermore, both books had the similar themes of man s inner monster and people s connection to
evolution. In Jekyll and Hyde, this inner monster was Hyde and in The Island of Doctor Moreau, this
monster was the beast men. This mean that both books held the common belief that men always
carried some sort of primal being inside of them, and that all men, even civilized scientists, can revert
back to that animal state. The books also held the common portrayal of the arrogant mad scientist,
where the archetypal mad man s hubris led to his own downfall and death. In Jekyll and Hyde, Jekyll s

Anointing of the Sick Sacrament Paper
Sacramental graces
The Catholic Church sees the effects of the sacrament as follows: As the sacrament of Marriage gives
grace for the married state, the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick gives grace for the state into which
people enter through sickness. Through the sacrament a gift of the Holy Spirit is given, that renews
confidence and faith in God and strengthens against temptations to discouragement, despair and
anguish at the thought of death and the struggle of death; it prevents the believer from losing Christian
hope in God s justice, truth and salvation. Because one of the effects of the sacrament is to absolve the
recipient of any sins not previously absolved through the sacrament of penance, only an ordained
priest or bishop ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Several sick persons may be anointed within the rite, especially if the celebration takes place in a
church or hospital. The celebration may also take place during a Catholic Mass.
[edit]Relationship with the Last Rites
Anointing of the Sick is closely associated with, and often administered during the rituals known as
the Last Rites. However, the term Last Rites is not equivalent to Anointing of the Sick , since it refers
also to two other distinct rites: Sacrament of Penance and Eucharist, the last of which is known as
Viaticum (Latin: provision for the journey ) when administered to the dying. The normal order of
administration of the rites is: first Penance (if the dying person is physically unable to confess,
absolution is given conditionally on the existence of contrition), then Anointing, then Viaticum.
Of the Last Rites, only a priest or bishop can administer the Sacraments of Penance and Anointing of
the Sick. In the absence of a priest these sacraments cannot be administered, but a lay person may give
a dying person Holy Communion, which in this case is Viaticum, the Last Sacrament of the Christian .

The oil used in the sacrament is usually olive oil, though other vegetable oil may also be used
(Catechism of the Roman Catholic Church, 1513). It is

Protestant Ethic And The Spirit Of Capitalism
In chapter three Weber presents the final drawback between the Protestant ethic and the spirit of
capitalism. As previously mentioned, Weber also introduced the idea of a calling to worldly pursuits.
As he describes in this chapter, Lutheranism has a divinely sanctioned place in the world, but for the
first time the question of how well one performed and their role became significant. Conversely,
Weber does not consider that belief in a calling is adequate to explain the spirit of capitalism. With this
in mind, a calling can adhere to traditionalism since it implies that an individual should assume their
position in society without further motiviation to become more. Catholicism after all was the basis for
the traditional worldview. As an

What Are The Strengths And Weaknesses Of Home Depot
Strengths Strong brand reputation: Home Depot operates in nearly 2,250 locations in the United States
and is recognized as the leading home improvement retailer. The exceptional recognition of the firm
has contributed to rising sales and growth (Bhasin, 2018). The brand is recognized for quality
products, affordable prices, and technology assisted service delivery. Productivity; Home Depot
employs modern supply chain systems that integrate processes and enhances production. With proper
technology and nearly 320,000 skilled employees, the firm maximizes its resources and floor space to

The foreign markets have significant opportunities for the growing civilizational and economy, which
favor the demand for modern home improvement products. Therefore, Home Depot should also
consider global expansion to spread their quality products and generate more sales and revenue. E
commerce; Home Depot can overcome the rising competition from the online firms through
expanding in e commerce. When the firm goes online, more customers will access its products and
services, and the websites will enable brand promotion. By 2014, Home Depot reported 1.2 billion
visits to its websites but most of the visitors were not turned into customers (Dalavagas, 2015). The
rise of immigrants; the rise of Hispanics in the United States is a national issue but an opportunity for
businesses. By 2017, the total purchasing power of immigrant populations was nearly $1.7 trillion
(Hawkins, 2015). However, with the steady rise in immigrant population, Home Depot can implement

Music Censorship Essay
Music Censorship
Since the being of time people have been making and listening to music. Music has been considered
the best way to express ourselves. The Bible even talks about how music was used to praise God.
Music has been used for all type of things ranging from to getting a girl to notice guy, trying to get
over a broken heart, or maybe losing a love one. Now society says that music has become too violent
and sexually oriented. Many people have different point of view on this topic some people feel that
there should be some type of censorship, while other feel censorship is against the first amendment,
and others feel that parents should be responsible for what their children listen to. The question that
comes to mind is should ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Others believe that music should not be censored because it would infringe on the artist s right to
freedom of speech, but music containing explicit lyrics should be criticized for their negative content.
Senator Sam Brownback of Kansas delivered a speech to the City Club of Cleveland. In his speech he
discusses how music has a major affect on youth, and how crimes among teenagers have increased
greatly, since music with explicit lyrics have been out on the market. He also expresses that music
should not be censored, because the artist have the right to say what they want in their lyrics, but
society also had the right to criticize the explicit lyrics in their music. (1 9) The right to freedom of
speech is given to all people under the bill of rights. If people weren t allowed to speak what they felt
this country would not be where it is today. However, other Americas feel that there should be no such
thing as censorship on music, but it is completely up to the parents to decide what their children
should listen to. In an article written by Olivia Clarke, she interviews parents to see what they have to
say about the music their children listen too. Lory Reinisch listens to the music her children listen to
and then tells them what songs they can listen to on the CD. (3) Artists that produce hardcore music is
only for entertainment. In the same article Dr. Dre stated, I let my kids listen. Matter of fact, I have a
14 year old daughter that critiques my music

Analysis Of A Quiet Passion By Terence Davies
I think if you re at the least an English major or minor in college, as I was, you re bound to come
across the poetry of Emily Dickinson in a class or two. Her work is profound and terribly moving, as
words flow out in such a way that you can feel the depths of feeling stretching through a nervous
system that may have only just been wracked by fits and that the questioning of what GOD is or what
LIFE and DEATH are have no choice but to be sussed out. There are also love poems too, or at least
poems sorting out what those feelings might amount to, or what it means to be at the foot of the stairs
looking at someone and not being able to, or feeling like, or whatever, going down. There s a lot of the
pain, but also the joy and reverie, in connection or those possibilities in her work.
The question then for Terence Davies is: what about the woman? There is some joy here, or even
small chirpings of humor in that reserved 19th century comedy of manners way at times in the first
two thirds... and then the last third is among the saddest things I ve seen unfold in a very long time.
What makes A Quiet Passion convincing is that Davies and his crew and cast commit to it all, and his
style is one of patience with his compositions and movements of the frame let s take a little time
moving across faces, for example, listening to a piece of music, or let s make sure we don t too much
when we can see the sum total of emotions an actor is expressing in listening (or, as a character may

Elizabeth Freeman Essay
From the early 1740s to 1829, an African American woman lived and unexpectedly became an
important woman in history. Even though most people never heard of her, what she did change how
people look at other African Americans. She was born in the early 1740s to African parents, and she
grew up as a slave with her sister Lizzie in Claverack, New York, which is about twenty miles south of
Albany. Their owner was Pieter Hogeboom, who was the head of a wealthy Dutch American family.
In 1735, Hogeboom s daughter Hannah married John Ashley, who was the son of one of the original
proprietors permitted by the General Court of Massachusetts to organize settlements along the
Housatonic River. When Hogeboom died in 1758, Lizzie and her were taken ... Show more content on

In one of the three town meetings in Berkshire County which John Ashley represented, Ashley was
denounced for being against the highly approved circular letter (Swan). Even though he was
denounced, in the next election, he was chosen again to represent the area. In early 1773, Bett was
serving refreshments to a dozen white men that had gathered at the Ashley s house to draw up a
petition to take into consideration the grievances which Americans in general and Inhabitants of this
Province in particular labor under (Swan). Ashley, who was chairman at this meeting, set up a set of
resolutions, which the first read Resolved, That mankind in a state of nature are equal, free, and
independent of each other, and have a right to the undisturbed enjoyment of their lives, their liberty,
and property (Rawls, pg. 188). This meeting was well noted by Bett. In 1780, George Mason, who
was the author of the Virgina bill of rights and a plantation owner of 118 slaves, wrote: All men are by
nature equally free and independent (Rawls, pg. 187). He was not thinking about the slaves though.
He was thinking about white Americans, that they are equal to the British and should have the same
rights as them. When other Virgina legislators saw this, they added Slaves, not being constituent
members of our society, could never pretend to any benefit from such maxim (Rawls, pg. 187). A
month later, the Declaration of Independence

Marae
They ask what are the values of a Marae? And we think the values or significance of a Maori is based
around people, rituals, spirituality and respect, but before we go any further then that we are to ask
ourselves another question. What is a Marae? The Marae is a meeting place which consists of a carved
meeting house (wharenui), a dining hall (whare kai), there is also the marae atea (the scared space
which is located at the front of the meeting house). The Marae is a symbol of tribal identity, and
security (being/feeling safe). The Marae is a meeting place where you can discuss problems or debate
what you have on your mind, and is considered by Maori as a turangawaewae (which is a standing
place, a place of belonging). In the Marae it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People have privileges and obligations to a certain place because of their links through their parents
and their ancestors. Your tƫrangawaewae gives you a home base on a marae. It gives you the right to
speak as tangata whenua on that marae. Doing this would create an obligation to listen on the part of
those who are seated. Whanaungatanga means kinship ties. People who belong to a particular marae
trace their whakapapa to that marae and to the ancestors it represents. They have the right to stand and
speak, and the obligation to look after and maintain the marae and uphold its mana. Whanaungatanga
is extended to include manuhiri when they stay on a marae. This is demonstrated when a person
addresses everyone who is staying on a marae as family when they say Kia ora e te whānau
(Greetings, family). Manaakitanga means to care for a person s mana (well being, in a holistic sense).
On a marae, it is often claimed that it is not what is said that matters but how people are looked after.
This is the essence of manaakitanga. Manaakitanga also includes the respect we give to elders. Our
elders are responsible for the manaakitanga (care) of the entire group connected to a marae. The
manaakitanga they give is based on their knowledge, life experience, and wisdom. Outside, in front of
the whare and at it s top is a tekoteko , or carved figure, which is placed on the roof and at the entrance
to the whare. It represents the ancestor s head. The maihi , or carved

Film Making Process Essay
There are many modes of production such as large scale, exploitation, independent, DIY and small
scale productions. The classical Hollywood studio system uses the mode of mass production.1 A
studio is a company in business for making films for example Paramount and Warner Bros are
studios.1 These studios have a system called studio systems in which they operate the filmmaking
process.1 In mass production systems, writers, directors, actors and all workers in between are under
contracts.1 These studios have ultimate control on what is being made, how the producers are making
it, what cast and crew were to take part and how the film was to be distributed.1 Large scale
production studio systems have a large supply of equipment and vast physical space.1 They work on
higher budgets and have large audiences.1 On the other hand, independent films fall into the category
of low budget productions.1 Although they operate in similar ways to the mass production system,
they don t have major distributers financing them.1 This allows directors to have more control over
the production process.1 However, independent filmmaking has its advantages and disadvantages. The
major advantages of independent filmmaking are that they could be personal and it allows for
upcoming filmmakers to flourish and create. The major disadvantages are working with small budgets
and the distribution/exhibition of the film. The films Modern Times (1936) by Charlie Chaplin,
Daughters of the Dust (1991) by

How Did Farmers Live In The Great Plains
In 1862 the Homestead Act was passed. The government was offering 160 acres in the plains, for very
little money. Many farmers in the east could not afford land to farm in their area so they took the deal.
This deal meant that if the farmers could successfully farm their land in the plains for 5 years, that
farmer would own it. Many couldn t pass it up and moved their families to the Great Plains area. They
built homes and began their new lives. Some lives in wooden shack like houses while others lived in
what were called dugouts. These were literally homes dug into the land. Within 50 years
approximately 300,000 people populated the Great Plains.
The Great Plains consisted of, but not all of Colorado , Kansas, Montana, Oklahoma, Nebraska, New

That s equal to twelve Empire State buildings stacked on one another. The cloud of gritty dust traveled
east to major cities like Chicago, New York, Atlanta, Boston and Washington DC. Ships more than

instrument called a pyrheliometer, measured the sunlight coming through the dust cloud at 50 percent.
That s half the UV rays of a normal spring day in the east. Finally people that seemed a world away
were seeing for themselves what they had only read about. They were living a day in the Dust Bowl.
People began to take notice.
To conclude, President Roosevelt appointed an agronomist, Hugh Hammond Bennett, to head what
became known as Operation Dust Bowl. In April1935, a dust storm came into Washington from the
plains. This happen just as Bennett was arriving in Washington to talk about the need for soil
conservation legislation. On that day Bennett said gentleman this is what I have been talking about.

  • 2. Radiographic Stereotypes Radiolucent lesions seen on radiographs develop from both odontogenic and non odontogenic structures. They characterize a broad spectrum of lesions (Avril et al., 2013) A sequential study of all the radiographic characteristics of the image helps ensure recognition and collection of all the information contained in the image and in turn improves the accuracy of interpretation. Analysis of any image should include: Step 1: Localize the anomaly Step 2: Assess the periphery and shape Step 3: Analyse the internal structure Step 4: Analyse the effects of the lesion on peripheral structures. Pulp vitality tests are needed to confirm diagnosis. 4. Periapical granuloma: Well circumscribed, rounded (around apex). National security requirements exercised the most significant influence on the development of airpower in Europe and the United States before the Second World War (WWII), because nations on both sides of the Ocean had to cope with the multifaceted disastrous results of World War I (WWI) and airpower seemed to be the answer for future wars. Primarily, understanding the context and consequences of WWI is vital to apprehend airpower theorist like Douhet, Mitchell and Trenchard and their revolutionary thoughts on airpower. Likewise, he postulated the potency of airpower and considered as the most decisive element in future wars. Further, he argued, that airpower would make Army and Naval forces almost superfluous. The United States, other than Great Britain, had a different perspective of its geopolitical situation. Because of the two Oceans on either side of their country, felt they could afford to be more complacent about developments in aviation. Although General Mitchell was a strong proponent for strategic bombing American airmen had a more distant perspective on bomber aircraft and the use in future wars. But, both, British and American airpower theorist believed that bombers are an offensive weapon. According to the American national security guideline bomber aircraft, especially shortly after WWI, would be employed as a defensive weapon. Mitchell argued, that airpower, by making wars shorter, would offer a way around the stalemate and slaughter seen in the Great war. This clearly underpins how Mitchell visualized and enforced national security requirements. Cause And Effect Of Chacxulub Impact Chicxulub Impact By Talullah Lennon The Cause: An Asteroid is formed in the inner solar system in a particular part called the Asteroid Belt, when small particles of rock and metal collide with each other, and slowly build up over time. Planets are formed the same way as asteroids, but what stops asteroids from growing and becoming a planet is due to the gravitationally pull of Jupiter. The asteroid belt lies between Jupiter and mars. Because of Jupiter s gravitationally pull the asteroid goes at a highly increased speed causing it to crash into other asteroids in the belt, the result of this is either the asteroids bounce off one another or they break off and don t stick together. The griffin shown has sharp talons and beak with pointed eyes. Lions were repeatedly seen throughout Assyrian artwork (Ascalone). The muscular legs and abdomen paired with a strong neck and flanks gave a symbolic image of the ideal solider or army. Biomechanics Of The Tympanic Membrane Darisha Jhutty April 27, 2015 BIOE 154: Introduction to Biomechanics Professor Norman Biomechanics of the Tympanic Membrane Background: Over the past years, bioengineers have applied different methods for modelling the human ear. The human ear is an intricate biomechanical system with its primary function to sound perception and reception. The ear is divided into 3 main components, each with its own unique functions: the outer ear (pinna), the middle ear, and the inner ear. The outer ear, or the pinna, consists of the auricle, the skin covered cartilage of the ear visible on the outside of the head, as well as the opening to the auditory canal. The middle ear refers the air filled hollow space (tympanic cavity) behind the eardrum or tympanic membrane. The tympanic membrane is a thin, cone shaped membrane that separates the outer ear from the middle ear (Figure 1a). The tympanic membrane is made up of two main parts: the fragile pars flaccida (upper region) and robust the pars tersa (lower region). The pars tersa, composed of three layers: skin, fibrous tissue, and mucus, makes up the majority of the tympanic membrane. The pars flaccida is often associated with eustachian tube malfunctions and choleostomas, whereas the pars tersa is associated with perforations. There are 3 bones, the malleus, incus, and stapes, in the middle ear (Figure 1b) that vibrate when exposed to the vibrations of the sound waves. International Financial Accounting Standards Board Introduction With the number of countries that have switched to the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) for their financial reporting, as well as the continued efforts made between the IFRS and US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP), it is evident that international convergence is an overall appealing idea for global reporting. With that said, for decades now US GAAP has worked with IFRS to create a universal standard; and while progress has been made to diminish variances between the standards, there are still large, if not unattainable efforts ahead of us. The hype over a proposed uniform set of global accounting standards appears to be stunted by the lost efforts in the convergence project between the US GAAP and IFRS. As the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) moves forward with its standards setting, there must be a reevaluation of the goal for reporting standards and efforts with the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB). Opinions regarding the optimal direction for the standards boards vary amongst regulators, practitioners, and academics. Many will argue in support to continue efforts for a uniform set of global accounting standards and believe this will drive more efficient international business. A Brief Note On The Medical Insurance Specialists ANALYSIS Jim has reorganized the call center by integrating the senior insurance specialists with the medical insurance specialists instead of having them divided separately into two groups. The reason for this change is for the senior insurance specialists to offer guidance to the medical insurance specialists. Jim requests Dave s OD intervention to address the main problem of missing time commitments. There are many cases to be worked and complex cases are time consuming. If a case does not have to be escalated, it can be processed faster. The medical insurance specialists cannot keep up with the volume of cases and calls to physicians which slow down the process. Also, the majority of cases are detained with the medical insurance specialists. Hiring additional staff is not in the budget. Woodwell points out that the most successful civilizations have decayed as forests where destroyed and replaced with scrublands. The scrublands were further impoverished by intensive grazing and erosion until the underlying rocks emerged and became the land scape. He goes further giving an example of the ancient Syria, Persia, throughout the Levant, and the Mediterranean basin, also the decline of the state known as Greece today was as a result of loss of forests and the impoverishment of the landscape. The same process happened with respect to Carthage in North Africa. We also have contemporary examples of land degradation from Haiti and Madagascar, now over populated and deforested and degraded to the point where their land scape are dysfunctional, incapable of supporting organized society. The rivers no longer flow in established channels, water from storms in mountains appears as floods in low lands and carries silt to fill harbors and destroy the coastal fisheries, so to restore all these problems, there is need to reforest and stabilize the uplands to regain control of water flows and water quality and to re establish a potentially ... There are two kinds of skepticism, local skepticism, which states that some areas of inquiry don t allow for knowledge, and global skepticism, which states that we cannot know anything about the world, (Bogosian). One of the most common arguments for skepticism is the Brain in a Vat argument, which is very similar to the argument of the Evil Demon who controls us. In opposition to this is a philosopher by the name of Hilary Putnam, who uses language as proof for us not being brains in vats. I am going to explain to you why I think that Putnam is correct. If you cannot be sure that you are not a brain in a vat, then you cannot rule out the possibility of all of your beliefs about the external world being false. (Bruekner, 2004) I ... In his idea, someone who has never seen a tree, would not automatically call a tree by that name when they saw it, however while we go through life we call things by their names. (Brueckner, 2004)He states that if he were a brain in a vat, and he called something a tree it would be no more accurate than someone who had never seen a table using the word to describe a duck. He uses the simple argument of: a. If I am a BIV, then my word tree does not refer to trees. b. My word tree refers to trees. So, c. I am not a BIV (Brueckner, 2004) However, it is also stated that you cannot know that the image and knowledge of trees were not programmed into the brains in vats, so they could know that the word tree means the image of a tree. So unfortunately this, like most other Cartesian skepticism arguments, for me at least, is a hard sell. If I had to decide on one of the two arguments to be the strongest, I would choose the argument against the idea of brains in vats. This is mostly because I believe that there are too many emotions and individual decisions that play out in each person s life for us to all actually be brains that are controlled by a computer or by one person. Every single day we are making hundreds of decisions and the responses to the same question, when presented to a variety of people vary significantly, and some of those decisions can change spur of ... The mad scientist archetype existed back when the first scientists began, when ancient peoples first started to employ the use of the scientific method. The trope roared into popularity in the Victorian era, where many books such as Frankenstein, Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde, and The Island of Doctor Moreau were published. Furthermore, both books had the similar themes of man s inner monster and people s connection to evolution. Now society says that music has become too violent and sexually oriented. Others believe that music should not be censored because it would infringe on the artist s right to freedom of speech, but music containing explicit lyrics should be criticized for their negative content. Senator Sam Brownback of Kansas delivered a speech to the City Club of Cleveland. In his speech he discusses how music has a major affect on youth, and how crimes among teenagers have increased greatly, since music with explicit lyrics have been out on the market. He also expresses that music should not be censored, because the artist have the right to say what they want in their lyrics, but society also had the right to criticize the explicit lyrics in their music. (1 9) The right to freedom of speech is given to all people under the bill of rights. If people weren t allowed to speak what they felt this country would not be where it is today. However, other Americas feel that there should be no such thing as censorship on music, but it is completely up to the parents to decide what their children should listen to. In an article written by Olivia Clarke, she interviews parents to see what they have to say about the music their children listen too. Lory Reinisch listens to the music her children listen to and then tells them what songs they can listen to on the CD. (3) Artists that produce hardcore music is only for entertainment. • 43. Analysis Of A Quiet Passion By Terence Davies I think if you re at the least an English major or minor in college, as I was, you re bound to come across the poetry of Emily Dickinson in a class or two. Her work is profound and terribly moving, as words flow out in such a way that you can feel the depths of feeling stretching through a nervous system that may have only just been wracked by fits and that the questioning of what GOD is or what LIFE and DEATH are have no choice but to be sussed out. There are also love poems too, or at least poems sorting out what those feelings might amount to, or what it means to be at the foot of the stairs looking at someone and not being able to, or feeling like, or whatever, going down. There s a lot of the pain, but also the joy and reverie, in connection or those possibilities in her work. The question then for Terence Davies is: what about the woman? There is some joy here, or even small chirpings of humor in that reserved 19th century comedy of manners way at times in the first two thirds... and then the last third is among the saddest things I ve seen unfold in a very long time. What makes A Quiet Passion convincing is that Davies and his crew and cast commit to it all, and his style is one of patience with his compositions and movements of the frame let s take a little time moving across faces, for example, listening to a piece of music, or let s make sure we don t too much when we can see the sum total of emotions an actor is expressing in listening (or, as a character may ... • 45. Elizabeth Freeman Essay From the early 1740s to 1829, an African American woman lived and unexpectedly became an important woman in history. Even though most people never heard of her, what she did change how people look at other African Americans. She was born in the early 1740s to African parents, and she grew up as a slave with her sister Lizzie in Claverack, New York, which is about twenty miles south of Albany. Their owner was Pieter Hogeboom, who was the head of a wealthy Dutch American family. In 1735, Hogeboom s daughter Hannah married John Ashley, who was the son of one of the original proprietors permitted by the General Court of Massachusetts to organize settlements along the Housatonic River. In one of the three town meetings in Berkshire County which John Ashley represented, Ashley was denounced for being against the highly approved circular letter (Swan). Even though he was denounced, in the next election, he was chosen again to represent the area. In early 1773, Bett was serving refreshments to a dozen white men that had gathered at the Ashley s house to draw up a petition to take into consideration the grievances which Americans in general and Inhabitants of this Province in particular labor under (Swan). Ashley, who was chairman at this meeting, set up a set of resolutions, which the first read Resolved, That mankind in a state of nature are equal, free, and independent of each other, and have a right to the undisturbed enjoyment of their lives, their liberty, and property (Rawls, pg. 188). This meeting was well noted by Bett. In 1780, George Mason, who was the author of the Virgina bill of rights and a plantation owner of 118 slaves, wrote: All men are by nature equally free and independent (Rawls, pg. 187). He was not thinking about the slaves though. He was thinking about white Americans, that they are equal to the British and should have the same rights as them. When other Virgina legislators saw this, they added Slaves, not being constituent members of our society, could never pretend to any benefit from such maxim (Rawls, pg. 187). • 46. Marae They ask what are the values of a Marae? And we think the values or significance of a Maori is based around people, rituals, spirituality and respect, but before we go any further then that we are to ask ourselves another question. What is a Marae? The Marae is a meeting place which consists of a carved meeting house (wharenui), a dining hall (whare kai), there is also the marae atea (the scared space which is located at the front of the meeting house). The Marae is a symbol of tribal identity, and security (being/feeling safe). The Marae is a meeting place where you can discuss problems or debate what you have on your mind, and is considered by Maori as a turangawaewae (which is a standing place, a place of belonging). Your tĆ«rangawaewae gives you a home base on a marae. It gives you the right to speak as tangata whenua on that marae. Doing this would create an obligation to listen on the part of those who are seated. Whanaungatanga means kinship ties. People who belong to a particular marae trace their whakapapa to that marae and to the ancestors it represents. They have the right to stand and speak, and the obligation to look after and maintain the marae and uphold its mana. Whanaungatanga is extended to include manuhiri when they stay on a marae. This is demonstrated when a person addresses everyone who is staying on a marae as family when they say Kia ora e te whānau (Greetings, family). Manaakitanga means to care for a person s mana (well being, in a holistic sense). On a marae, it is often claimed that it is not what is said that matters but how people are looked after. This is the essence of manaakitanga. Manaakitanga also includes the respect we give to elders. Our elders are responsible for the manaakitanga (care) of the entire group connected to a marae. The manaakitanga they give is based on their knowledge, life experience, and wisdom. Outside, in front of the whare and at it s top is a tekoteko , or carved figure, which is placed on the roof and at the entrance to the whare. It represents the ancestor s head. • 47. Film Making Process Essay There are many modes of production such as large scale, exploitation, independent, DIY and small scale productions. The classical Hollywood studio system uses the mode of mass production.1 A studio is a company in business for making films for example Paramount and Warner Bros are studios.1 These studios have a system called studio systems in which they operate the filmmaking process.1 In mass production systems, writers, directors, actors and all workers in between are under contracts.1 These studios have ultimate control on what is being made, how the producers are making it, what cast and crew were to take part and how the film was to be distributed.1 Large scale production studio systems have a large supply of equipment and vast physical space.1 They work on higher budgets and have large audiences.1 On the other hand, independent films fall into the category of low budget productions.1 Although they operate in similar ways to the mass production system, they don t have major distributers financing them.1 This allows directors to have more control over the production process.1 However, independent filmmaking has its advantages and disadvantages. The major advantages of independent filmmaking are that they could be personal and it allows for upcoming filmmakers to flourish and create. The major disadvantages are working with small budgets and the distribution/exhibition of the film. The films Modern Times (1936) by Charlie Chaplin, Daughters of the Dust (1991) by ... • 48. How Did Farmers Live In The Great Plains In 1862 the Homestead Act was passed. The government was offering 160 acres in the plains, for very little money. Many farmers in the east could not afford land to farm in their area so they took the deal. This deal meant that if the farmers could successfully farm their land in the plains for 5 years, that farmer would own it. Many couldn t pass it up and moved their families to the Great Plains area. They built homes and began their new lives. Some lives in wooden shack like houses while others lived in what were called dugouts. These were literally homes dug into the land. Within 50 years approximately 300,000 people populated the Great Plains. The Great Plains consisted of, but not all of Colorado , Kansas, Montana, Oklahoma, Nebraska, New Mexico, South and North ...
