La Vita Nuova
The promise of a new life at a wedding is an optimistic rebirth; the loss of a lover is an obligatory
uprooting. Allegra Goodman s La Vita Nuova records the changed life of a freshly dumped bride to
be. As she endures her altered life, Amanda occupies herself by babysitting her student Nathaniel.
Amanda uses irony, dark humor, and juxtaposition as a coping mechanism; instead of facing the new
life she has to live, she uses sardonic reflection to elongate her mourning period.
When Amanda digs up memories of her ex fiancé, her timing and choice of anecdote help her wallow
in rejection for longer. Reflecting on her breakup, she says We had too many differences... For
example, I loved him and he didn t love me (Goodman). She proves this with the things she
remembers her fiancé saying to her. There are two basic types of ex fiance quotes: insults with witty
retorts from Amanda and compliments contrasted with Amanda s current cynical views. As an
example of the former, while spending time with Nathaniel, Amanda thinks of her fiance s cutting
words: It s hard to be with you, her fiancé had said. I feel like I m suffocating. Open a window,
Amanda had said (Goodman). Instead of living in the moment and enjoying Nathaniel s company, she
insists on dwelling on the past.
Amanda s dark humor applied to her current life makes a mockery of her future. Her ... Show more

By bringing her dress into her 1st grade art class, Amanda allowed the loss of her fiance to incite the
loss of her job. After peeling back an outer layer of literary prose, Amanda is able to reveal to the
reader that Dante s La Vita Nuova details the perfect masochistic love. She then proceeds to revel in
its darkness, responding to a compliment with You re not supposed to say that... You re supposed to
write a sonnet (Goodman). Amanda wants to stay unhappy and unmoving; she admires a love that is

Ibo Vs. Afghan Festivals

Ibo VS Afghan Festivals/Holidays
The daily life of every human being has been refined by the lifestyle passed down from one s
guardians, their community, and the environment they are exposed to. Every culture contains some
sort of celebration and/or a holiday. Through the schedules of people s lives, there are special
occasions in which are celebrated for different reasons. Usually, these days are eagerly awaited for and
have days of preparation to lead up to the event. The Ibo and Afghan culture have great similarities in
preparation and style of celebration, but also have major differences in the reason for celebration. In
the Ibo culture, one of the most awaited holidays is the New Yams Festival, and in the Afghan culture
Eid al Fitr is the greatest celebrated holiday. While this festival, ...celebrates the transition from a time
when food is scarce to a time of plenty, (Encyclopedia of World Holidays, vol 4), Eid al Fitr is a
celebration for those who have spiritually gotten closer to God in the previous month of Ramadan.
The Ibo festival lasts two days and is named after the well known vegetable that helps the Ibo people
survive in the country of Nigeria. Eid is celebrated for one day longer than the Ibo festival and is
Arabic for the festival of the breaking of the fast . The Festival of the New Yams

Emotional Intelligence And Self Awareness Essay
Introduction
Emotional intelligence is conceptualized as a person s ability to overcome stress, communicate
effectively, understand others, cope with challenges, and solve conflicts by identifying, using,
understanding, and managing their emotions positively (Gines, 2015). Emotional intelligence allows
individuals to understand others, without necessarily talking to them. This understanding is vital since
it influences the way we relate with other people. Emotional intelligence can be defined using four
components which include self awareness, self management, social awareness, and relationship
management (Segal, Smith, Shubin, 2016). The essay focuses on these four components and the skills
that help in building emotional intelligence.
Components of Emotional Intelligence
Self awareness involves the ability to understand and evaluate your own emotions through reflection,
self comparisons and feedback from others (Steiner, 2014). Self awareness aims at enhancing self
knowledge, behavioral, and emotional improvements, and accommodating weaknesses (Steiner,
2014). It allows individuals to understand how they think, behave, and respond to situations that they
encounter. To achieve this, feedback from other people is required. People who are self aware are self
driven, resourceful, eager to learn, self motivated, and problem solvers. They also portray
independence of self concept (Steiner, 2014). Self awareness helps an individual to practice effective
self management.

Compare And Contrast The Challenges Of Becoming A Military...
Challenges: At my age it was definitely a good learning experience. Being able to adapt to a
paramilitary style of training has been my greatest challenge. At times, when adapting to the
traditional ways of the academy has taken me out of my comfort. Not having prior military

strength: Desire and determination to succeed, being resourceful, follow through any assignments or

What Are The Ideals Of The 1920s
America has been plagued with the American Dream since its citizens first started spreading out
westward in search of wealth and fame. Along with this American ideal came the concept of being un
American and not standing for what was considered true American. With the emergence of Populists,
Progressives and Radicals came a vast difference between what was thought as American. All groups
claimed to be trying to make the US a better place however each differed vastly in their ideas of going
about it. During the age of uncertainty between 1890 and the 1920 s a new movement called the
Progressives emerged in parts of the Unites States. They emerged as part of a long tradition of reform
aimed at correcting the issues of the country.
Progressives ranged across the social and political spectrum with different views on reform and ideas
on how to go about it. It crossed the lines of party, class, gender and even race (Nugent, page 4). Many
presidents and influential speakers had overlapping ideas regarding reform. By the end of the era
progressives managed to tackle everything from class conflict to making people better citizens.
Famous progressives include iconic members of US history such as Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow
Wilson, Jane Adams and muckraker journalists such as Upton Sinclair
One of the first issues tackled by progressives included laborers and their disconnection from
government. During the start of the progressive era there were few laws and regulations set

Motifs In A Tale Of Two Cities
Motif: A motif is a narrative element with symbolic meaning that repeats throughout a work of
literature. Example: No fight could have been half so terrible as this dance. It was so emphatically a
fallen sport a something once innocent, delivered over to all devilry a healthy pastime changed into a
means of angering the blood, bewildering the senses, and the heart (288). Dickens, A Tale of Two
Cities Context: As soon as Charles Darnay arrives at France, he becomes a prisoner and is taken to a
prison named La Force. After learning about Charles departure, Lucie and Dr. Manette follows Darnay
to France. Dr. Manette tells Lucie about a window in the prison where Charles can see her at a certain

Voltaire s View Of Candide
Voltaire s Candide is a satirical work written in 1759 as a commentary during the Enlightenment. One
of Voltaire s most famous works, it also functioned to reflect Voltaire s opinions. Candide is
considered Voltaire s signature work in which he levels his sharpest criticism against nobility,
philosophy, the church, and human cruelty. Though often considered a representative text of the
Enlightenment era, the novel criticizes a number of Enlightenment philosophies. As reading and books
were a sign of wealth in that time, the trend among nobility was reading. The criticisms and ridicule
within the satirical nature of Candide had much to do with the nobility and their standards and ideas,
especially in contrast with those of the lower classes. Through the form and technique of satire in
Candide, Voltaire suggests the absurdity of societal principles and theories.
Throughout the novel, Candide s teacher and philosopher, Pangloss, persists in his paternalistic
optimism theory. He continually expresses his belief that this world is the best of all possible worlds
and that everything happens and exists for a reason. One example is after the earthquake in Lisbon,
killing 30,000 people, Pangloss comments, For, said he, all that is for the best. If there is a volcano at
Lisbon it cannot be elsewhere. It is impossible that things should be other than they are; for everything
is right (5.14). Pangloss insists that the volcano was made for the exact purpose of the earthquake

Is Macbeth Relevant Today
Society defines a hero as a valiant figure whom many admire due to their relatable, yet seemingly just
actions. William Shakespeare s The Tragedy of Macbeth, tells the story of Macbeth, a lord who
showed his bravery in battle and whom many look up to as a role model. However, it is through his
ambition and need for power that his morals are put into question, and result in his downfall. Although
tragic, Macbeths rise and fall is similar to many influential people of modern society. One notable
example is actor and comedian Bill Cosby. A man many grew up with, and felt was not only a father
on screen, but in the hearts of many. Recently, Cosby has become the face of yet another scandal. By
his actions becoming public, Cosby is now seeing his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

he set forth to sexually assault those who had admired him. Both Cosby and Macbeth s decisions

How Did The Assassination Cause Ww1
The assassination and the ultimatum both played a significant role in the outbreak of the war. They
caused a chain reaction of events, which ended up eventually causing World War I. On July 23, 1914,
nearly one month after the assassination of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Austria Hungary
issued an ultimatum to Serbia. Serbia accepted all terms of the ultimatum except for one;
consequently, on July 28, 1914, Austria Hungary declared war on Serbia, beginning the First World
War. France and England created an alliance because they both feared Germany s naval strength and
supremacy. Despite claiming it was defensive in nature, it spread east and eventually, other countries
were involved. Since Austria Hungary and Germany were in dispute over the assassination, they
became involved too. Therefore, alliance systems played a significant role in the outbreak of the war.

The Impact Of Safety On The Oil Industry

forms of procedures that have been designed to promote safety culture in the industry as well as the

drilled in the Gulf of Mexico experienced a blowout and lasted for about 87 days and became a
memorable event in the history of the Oil industry and mankind as a whole. The 87 day nightmare did
massive damage to lives and properties, the water body in which the well was drilled and the marine
life that resides in it. This resulted in federal lawsuits and fines ranging into billions of dollars. Per the
Buffalo report delivered by the Department of interior on May 27, 2010, a failed cement job coupled
with inexperienced personnel were the central cause of this horrible Oil industry disaster. The
regulations that existed before this incident as well as how these regulations have been impacted by

that have been faced by Safety regulators faced during the implementation of these regulations.

I wanted to stop the car and talk with Mr. Norton, to beg his pardon for what he had seen; plead and

Napoleon s Control Over Europe s Territory
Napoleon s Control Over Europe s Territory
Napoleon Bonaparte will remain in the heart of many French nationals as one of the greatest military
leaders that the nation has had when it comes to warfare history. In 1799, Napoleon launched a series
of wars, which historians call, Napoleonic Wars in a bid to extend the territory of France in Europe.
Many historians argue that the Napoleonic Wars were a continuation of the French Revolution in
1789. The revolution brought with it many changes, especially in the production of modern mass
weapons. Napoleon s success came from his ideas of freeing Europe, massive army and leadership
abilities.
Napoleon, Corsican aristocrat, who was a minor, rose to the position of emperor in France because ...

These two battles indicated the strategic nature of Napoleon, as well as the supremacy of the French
military in Europe. They were the turning point of his quest to dominate Europe and increase French
territory. Napoleon s success was because of several factors from his military wit to the incompetent
nature of his enemies in Europe.
When Napoleon rose to the position of an emperor, he became the head of a huge army battalion set
up by his previous predecessor. The French army was a conglomeration of loyal citizens who were
aware of the cause for their engagement in warfare. They were doing the fighting out of free will and
did not act as mercenaries as was the case in the larger parts of Europe. Napoleon impressed on them
that they were fighting to protect the gains of their industrial revolution, which was under threat from
the outside enemies, and it was a matter of patriotism rather than advancing the ideals of Napoleon as
an individual. Napoleon used his wits to create the revolution ardor among those in the military.
According to those in the army, the only way to express the ardor was to engage in battles making
Napoleon succeed in his quest to gain more territories in Europe (Gershoy 67). It was a vital reason
for the success of Napoleon, as many of his enemies did not fight to annihilate success

Due to the small note values and the large leaps that make the vocal lines, particularly in the beginning
and in bar 9, difficult to sing, the indicated tempo feels very fast. However, the song can turn out
harmless in this fast tempo if the performers do not feel a certain resistance. For coordination
purposes, it might be easier to ignore the changing time signatures of 2/4 and 6/8 and just feel two
beats with different rhythmic subdivisions in each bar. However, the pull of the speaker s emotions
can be better conveyed if each performer feels the music in the notated time signatures. Although
many of the other songs contain phrases where voice and piano are not aligned, here the tension

They share the common property of blocking D2 and 5HT2A receptors. However no two molecules

Similarities Between Scope And Scope
A. P. J. Abdul Kalam the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007 once said: In a democracy, the
well being, individuality, and happiness of every citizen are important for the overall prosperity, peace,
and happiness of the nation. This quote perfectly explains the two of the most different pieces of
literature. Anthem by Ayn Rand and the movie Rope by Alfred Hitchcock. Anthem is in a dystopia
where the word I was not used nor was Ego . They live in almost the dark ages with no electricity or a
democracy. Everyone works for each other and if you were slightly different from the rest you were
punished. But one man came out of the trance and realized what was happening, that equality and
individuality were nowhere to be found. On the other hand Rope was taken place in the late 40 s. But
Rope was about men who thought because they were superior and rules do not apply to them like
murder. Ayn Rand Anthem and Alfred Hitchcock Rope have very different views of how an individual
should view himself.
Rand believes that individuality is key for a society to work. In her book, she said For the coming of
that day shall I fight, I and my sons and my chosen friends. For the freedom of Man. For his rights.
For his life. For his honor. Rand protagonist just got out of a community where you could not think for
yourself and now he is able to say I without fearing death. Rand was able to show how inequality can
change a person whole understanding of life. Now her protagonist wants more citizens to know this
thing called individuality.
But in the beginning, you had brothers who all thought of each other as equals and if you even liked
someone in the sightless you would be punished. This is an evil thing to say, for it is a transgression,
the great transgression of Preference, to love any among men better than the others, since we must
love all men and all men are our friends this is what a community was for Rand s protagonist. Not
thinking about yourself, but thinking about the good of the group. You grew up with only your
brothers, no dad nor mom. No grandkids or freedom. You did the same thing every day for 7 days a

Deborah Westman And Her Work At The Bank Of Montreal
This case study involves Deborah Westman and her work at the Bank of Montreal (BMO) as a junior
employee. Deborah has aspirations of progressing within the bank to higher levels of leadership, but is
concerned about possible barriers due to her gender that have prevented other women from advancing.
The bank is actively seeking to provide better opportunities for women to attain key leadership
positions through the use of a task force and new policies. Deborah is uncertain if she can take
advantage of the increased awareness of women in the bank, and if the barriers to higher leadership
will actually be removed. Possible strategies will be recommended for Deborah in order to assist in
her career.
Taking Advantage of Awareness Part of Deborah s fear is that she may be wrong in attempting to take
advantage of the increased attention of barriers that are preventing women from advancing to higher
levels within the BMO. However, this seems like the perfect time to try and advance her career at the
bank, especially considering the numerous barriers that have been identified within the bank. There
are five reasons given for why employees of the BMO believe women are not promoted more
regularly. The reasons are representative of the culture at the bank and include women s age, a lack of
education, the idea that women are not as committed and lack the necessary skills, and that over time
women will naturally enter into higher leadership positions (Rowe Guerrero, 2016). In addition

The American Journey Of The Middle 19th Century
In the middle 19th century, a event that Americans extended their lands to the west (also called
westward expansion) makes the relationship between the North and the South became serious and
tensed. The Manifest Destiny was the common ideas in American at that time which white Americans
had the right to extend their territory toward the west. After the Panic of 1873, Americans believed
that they can recover the exportation with the idea of Manifest Destiny, and then farmers thought they
would lose the slavery force under the Manifest Destiny (David Goldfield, The American Journey,
page 361). During the Mexican war, James Polk, the president of America, want to get oregon but
afraid of againsting both Mexican and British (David, page 361). In 1845, Polk admitted that Texas
has its own border Rio Grande River, and want Texas to join America, which makes Mexican angry
and attempted to attack America in 1846 (David, page 362). Mexico lost the battle after two years, the
united states forced the Mexico to admit that the Texas was no longer a part of Mexico (David, page
362). Because the recognition of American that Texas was independent, the U.S. finally gained the
state of Texas. Even though Polk acquired the territory of Texas, the Southern people did not support
Polk (David, page 362). Although American owned many territories of the west, the conflicts between

Summary Of The Paranoid Style In American Politics
The Prevalence of Political Paranoia
In the controversial essay, which was first published in the November 1964 issue of Harper s
Magazine, The Paranoid Style in American Politics, Richard Hofstadter argues how the prevalence of
paranoia in American politics has dominated the country. Hofstadter asserts American politics have
been governed by paranoia since the creation of the United States, and it has manifested itself into the
minds of both average and intellectuals Americans. He contends that paranoia has played a pivotal
role in American politics by fostering fear in citizens regarding issues such as gender, ethnicity, race,
and religion and proclaims the reason fear is heightened in citizens has more to do with the style in
which panic is spread than any other factor. Furthermore, the author claims the sole issue dictating
American politics is not simply paranoia, but rather a problem internationally caused, primarily,
through misconceptions and false imaginations. Hofstadter also explores the affiliation paranoia has to
power, to corruption, and to the government. Additionally, he examines the reasoning behind many
skeptics and paranoids in the country today and describes the techniques with which they spread panic
and hysteria, through methods such as books, speeches, and media. The Paranoid Style in American
Politics, by Richard Hofstadter, demonstrates the critical role paranoia plays in dictating American
politics through the utilization of academic diction, anecdotal evidence, logical appeals, an
explanatory tone, and chronological organization.
Hofstadter employs a scholastic tone by incorporating academic diction into his essay, to establish
credibility when discussing paranoia and its roots in American politics. When examining paranoia,
Hofstadter argues that it establishes a greater affinity for bad causes than good (Hofstadter 77).
Through this phrase, and the language Hofstadter applies, it can be concluded that the intended
audience for this piece is intellectuals. The author s diction and tone identify Hofstadter s belief of
paranoia doing little to spark progressive change in America, but rather hindering the development of
policies and activities which would combat real problems.

A Report On The Battle Of Wanat
Forethought or the counter ability to think as far down the road as we need is not always a blessing

the rifleman is shooting at you, yet the 1000 yard target is a tank that has your position zeroed in. Near

Key Performance Indicators ( Kpis )
As you know, in our current business environment, most companies have finite resources and budget
but they share a common objective which is to do more with less and stay nimble . Extracting key
insight from business data is crucial for management to formulate strategy to drive improvement in
our organization to counter competition as the industry evolves. In addition, having the information at
the right time to departments and individuals will motivate the employees to act on this information in
relation to corporate or departmental goals. Due to the recent trend in visualization and advanced
technology in dashboard, corporations are increasingly captivated with dashboards due to their vast
ability to allow the users visualize data in an interactive and engaging manner. The ability to use key
analytics and technology to manage performance through the use of key performance indicators
(KPIs) provides great benefits to companies and corporations. Companies may use KPIs to set targets,
identify trends, determine potential issues and opportunities, and plan future activities to help increase
performance. With that in mind, I recommend to start an initiative to develop a set of relevant KPIs to
better measure our contract performance. As contract performance is a clear indicator of the success of
our business, we need a mean to measure the effectiveness of this component in order for us to take
action at the right time if we fall short on our target. I want to propose

Trifles: Yes Minnie did it but can you blame her?
The play Trifles by Susan Glaspell is an interesting story about a woman named Mrs.Minnie Wright.
Mrs. Minnie wright does not actually take part in the scene but is actually the main character
throughout the play. The focus of the play is about whether or not Minnie Wright did in fact murder
her husband, John Wright or did he commit suicide. Throughout the scene, they bring in people to
look over or find evidence that can be used to give testimony at her trial. Mrs. Minnie wright should
be found innocent of her husband s death, It does not matter if she had a part in his death or not. The
fact that she was not happy because of her husband s attitude towards her tells the audience that she
was not happy and was a captive in what was supposed to be her home.
Mrs.Minnie Wright does not deserve to be condemned for the crime of murdering of her husband.
Mrs.Wright should not be condemned to prison or death because she has already suffered enough
although her marriage and needs to have enough room and space to be able to take a breath. There is
no concrete evidence that she had a hand in his death. The only evidence that seems to be against her
is the fact that she is not acting the way the men want her to. The fact that she is not crying or wailing
about the death of her husband seems to upset the men in the play. So much in fact that they seem to

Problems with the Presidential Elections in United States
The method of choosing the president proved to be But one of many vexing problems for the fifty five
men who assembled in Philadelphia in May 1887 (Euchner, and Maltese 2). Our forefathers were
faced with many hard decisions that would have repercussions for the next two centuries. One of the
most perplexing problems facing them was the question of how to elect a president. They had to
choose from three main systems: elect the president by congress, the people, or electors. There was
much debate over this topic in the constitutional convention until eventually the Electoral College
system was chosen to elect our president. The Electoral College system has been in place for over 200

Some people think that the system would work better if all the states were required to use the same
method of choosing electors, but the constitution protects the states rights in this case.
The legislative system never gained very much support because of too much bargaining, promises,
and payoffs. The district system eventually lost popularity because it encourages third parties, which
went against the wishes of the forefathers. This left the general ticket system in the drivers seat. This
system turned the electors into 538 of the most powerful people in the country. There are two states
that still use the district system, but the remaining 48 states use the general ticket system ( Electoral
College I 256). The voter votes for either the president or the party that they wish to hold office, but
this can cause a problem if there is an unfaithful elector. Electors are expected to follow the people s

what they are expected to vote for are considered faithless or unfaithful electors. 26 states do not

Although there was more than one individual that aided in the reconstruction of the province, Clement

Working Class in England describes the inhumane and atrocious living and working conditions for the

Impressions of the Meaning and Significance of African...
In his book African Religions and Philosophy professor John Mbiti continually explains that all
African cultures and societies, regardless of differences in national origin, language, or ethnicity are
deeply religious. African traditional religion is so much a part of the African traditional heritage that it
is found in every aspect of life. Traditional religion for the Africans is the normal way of looking at
the world and experiencing life itself. Therefore, as Mbiti interprets, A study of these religious systems
is, therefore, ultimately a study of the peoples themselves in all the complexities of both traditional
and modern life. (p.1). This statement, along with many others similar to it in the first few pages of

Furthermore, it is not unusual for an African Christian to participate in Christian religious practice by
going to church on Sunday and then to participate in African religious practice later on in the same
week.
At first this was something I did not truly understand because in my religion (Judaism) I believe we
are taught to only participate in the practice/rituals of one single faith, the Jewish faith. However, my
confusion was cleared up by professor Mbiti s following explanation:
It is not enough to learn and embrace a faith which is active once a week, either on Sunday or Friday,
while the rest of the week is virtually empty. It is not enough to embrace a faith which is confined to a
church building or mosque, which is locked up six days and opened only once or twice a week. Unless
Christianity and Islam fully occupy the whole person as much as, if not more than, traditional
religions do, most converts to these faiths will continue to revert to their old beliefs and practices for
perhaps six days a week, and certainly in times or emergency and crisis. (p.3)
When evaluating these statements in the context of what I had learned earlier regarding how African
traditional religions permeate every aspect of a person s life, everything in existence has actual or
potential religious significance, and that there is no dichotomy between

Jim Davis Research Paper
Garfield, is an American comic character created by Jim Davis in 1978. It tells the story of a cat
named Garfield, his owner Jon and their dog named Odie. I all started in 1970 when the comic artist
Jim Davis decided to take a troll of the comic books in order to introduce a new, interesting and
relatable character and he realized that dogs were doing great but there were no cats at that time. Davis
figured that as he grew up on a farm with 25 cats, he could come up with a strip based on cats. He then
continued to create a strip with a cat as its main character and thus created Garfield. At first, Garfield
consisted of four main characters. Davis was inspired from his grandfather for Garfield s name and

experiences, it was very surprising to me how different someone s upbringing can be from my own.
Julia gave me an amazing interview, she and I have very similar upbringings, but we are very different
in some of our cultural beliefs. Julia Kemp differs from my cultural beliefs in our look on politics, our
family traditions, our involvement based on gender, and our religious beliefs. One of the differences I
discovered early on was our political belief.
Growing up, I was from North Topeka and was exposed to a very conservative community, so
naturally that is where my beliefs fell. My parents also had a huge influence on my beliefs politically,
considering they were both raised republican. My dad made it a point to teach me about politics and to
explain to me why he believed what he did. Some things that I believe very strongly in are limited
government and the lowering of taxes to promote companies to make more jobs for individuals. I have
also always aligned with Pro Life beliefs from not only my political beliefs but also my religious
beliefs. Julia however has a very different outlook. Julia

Outline Of The Reconstruction Of Reconstruction
Reconstruction was a rather simple process for the group. The design used was not very complicated,
so it took much less time than more complex versions. The reconstruction consisted of using the taken
apart printer for the base of the machine. The printer worked as a sturdy base because of its size and
shape. It was laid on its side so that the paper tray was sticking into the air. A motor was then gathered
from one of the printers that was deconstructed. The group chose the largest of the motors to ensure
that it would be able to lift a golf ball to meet the criteria for success. The motor was secured to the
top of the printer tray using a compartment from the printer that had previously held printer cartridges.

Since the tennis ball is curved, when it went over the lip of the box, it dumped the golf ball onto the

Discussion (Maile Harris) connect the results to broad topics
The purpose of this project was to use parts salvaged from the deconstruction project to build a new
machine that could complete a task. Two choices were presented as the task: option one was to lift an
object of undetermined weight up to a height of twenty to sixty centimeters, and then deliver that
object to a platform twenty centimeters in height; option two was to launch a tennis ball sized object
through a goal post one to two feet in height. After analyzing our available materials, we opted for
option one. We measured success in this task by our device s ability to lift and deposit that object, as
per the requirements of the task.
The motor was mounted at the top of the device in such a way that it would reel in the string attached
to it, pulling up whatever was attached to the string (in our case, a half tennis ball basket that the task s
object could be placed in). The string with the basket on the end extended out from the base of the
device, draping over the far side of the box/platform. Once the basket was reeled in, it would hit the
top edge of the box, causing it to tip and dump its contents onto the platform, and then the

Comparison Of Alexander Pushkin And Robert Frost
Therese Youso
ENG 312: Lyric Poetry
Sr. Mary Dominic, O.P.
April 28, 2015
Alexander Pushkin and Robert Frost both have written poems about autumn. There is a correlation
between these two poems since they share many romantic features. Autumn and After Apple Picking
are both alike and different in many ways. Alexander Pushkin was born in Moscow, Russia and lived
from 1799 until 1837. He wrote from a very young age, not only writing poetry, but also dramas and
novels. He died in a duel when he was 39 years old. Autumn is a poem that contains many of the
elements of romanticism. The first quality is feelings. This whole poem oozes the feelings of Pushkin.
The first line is October comes at last. The feeling of relief is obvious, and there is a sense of an event
finally coming. It is as if his patience was being tested and wearing thin. He could hardly wait for
autumn. In the second stanza he writes, This is my time! What is the spring to me? Spring makes me
ill: my mind is never free from dizzy dreams, my blood s in constant ferment. He clearly does not like
the spring season at all. It is boring and there is a tone of disgust. He compares the fun and excitement
of winter. There is definitely a large range between the way he feels about what spring brings and
what winter brings. Winter is almost bearable to Pushkin. Winter is fun. He enjoys the activities and
cold weather of the winter. In stanza four, he writes, O, summer fair! I would have loved you too,

History And Advances Of The Christian Church Essay
During the course of Foundations of Reflection: God, my mission is to appreciate and learn the history
and advances of the Christian Church. As students, we analyze cultural texts and describe meaningful
events to develop an answer to who, what, and why there is a transcendent God. This composition will
focus the historical social context, ecclesial context, and modifications to the Church that occurred
from three critical events; Fall of the Roman Empire, World War II, and the Celebration of the Holy
Year by Pope John Paul II. The selected episodes are key in the history of the development of the
church and provide insights of the church politically, socially, and more importantly, religiously. The
founding of Rome, today known as the Eternal City, was in 753 BC. The governmental hierarchy of
early Rome was simple; governed by seven kings. Soon came transition because of heavy disputes in
turn, the people of Rome gained power and ruled the city themselves. This government was short
lived and a threat to society because of its poor structure and poor authority. Therefore, the people of
Rome agreed to develop a new structure, labeled the Roman Republic. The Roman Republic was in
other words, the Senate, which advised the kings in official affairs and important decisions. The
Roman Empire is known for having a great government, which lasted from a great number of years.

`` Brave New World `` By Aldous Huxley
John the Savage is the only person in this new world society born naturally from a mother and not
from a factory, John is a unique human being with an identity and a family relationship unlike any
other character in Aldous Huxley s novel, Brave New World . Even though he is the son of two upper
class utopians, he grows up in the depths of Malpais: The Savage Reservation. Torn between two
cultures, John is not truly a part of the savage society or of the new world society. His only society is
an imaginative world built around Shakespeare s books. John is the ultimate outsider and his life is
filled with confusion and struggle.
Although he does not appear until chapter seven of Brave New World , John is the protagonist of the
story and the symbol of the old world society. The outer appearance of John can reveal the struggle
within him. He may be dressed like a savage, but his light colored skin, blonde hair, and blue eyes
betray his origin. He was born on the Savage Reservation to Linda, a Beta minus who had lived in the
new world society before being abandoned on the reservation by the Director of Hatcheries and

in London as an adult. His life on the reservation is miserable, because he is not accepted by the other

South Park as Parody of Society
South Park began airing in 1997. The commercials that preceded it gave the impression of it being
another stupid cartoon; however, when I began watching, I realized important issues were being
covered through the repeated behaviors and actions of its characters, through the influences these
actions could have on the viewers, through the reinforcement and rejections of certain stereotypes,
through the long term effects that could result from watching the program, and through its reflection
of social reality.

There are both negative and positive influences these repeated behaviors and actions could have on an
audience. One negative effect could be the numbing of the viewer to children s deaths: it is such a
common occurrence on the show until it is expected. Another effect could be the instilling of negative
feelings toward the overweight; the audience could be learning that it is acceptable to verbally attack a
person with a weight problem. Also, in a time of AIDS, promotion of sexual promiscuity is a
dangerous thing: never have the writers mentioned the use of condoms by Chef during his encounters.
Finally, because of the recent advances in genetic research and its awakening of new fears in the
public, South Park s parody of the geneticist could further play on people s fears.
Despite the potentially negative influences of these behaviors and actions, there could be a positive
influence existing in the form of catharsis. American society has suffered from the rules of political
correctness, the fear of AIDS, and the fear of knowledge (the fear of going too far into God s domain
thanks to our Puritanical background). Maybe South Park gives us release from repression by allowing
us to laugh at the things we fear the most: death, ridicule of our differences by our peers, the
contracting of deadly diseases, and advancements in science. (I am sure that most of us need release

throughout my entire life. I have never really looked out for medical help, other than searching online.
Though I never found the Bach Flower Therapy by my mild researching online, I am glad I get to
research it now after tragic things have happened to my life. If I applied these techniques into my life,
it would for sure help me pass through the tough times. This paper will go through the way Dr. Bach
searched and created these remedies, what some 12 healers are, and their benefits with ... Show more

He was able to conclude that vaccine therapy had more in common with homeopathy than with
allopathic medicine. Dr. Bach searched and found that flowers had the same vibrations the bacteria
had. He saw the psychic components in physical illness. This helped him understand that each
different flower went with a certain type of mental state. And from his practice he had noticed that
with each personality, a specific illness would appear to the person. Thus, setting out in England to
find the flowers that would help the different people and their problems. He found that flowers had
their highest healing ability in full bloom around midday. With his knowledge of applying hypothesis
to patients, he was able to create the first 12 tinctures. Bach matched the properties of the plants to the
emotional, mental, and spiritual dimensions of healing. After living with a disease and searching for
therapeutic flowers, Dr. Bach died in his sleep on November 27, 1936. He had left his assistant Nora
Weeks and Victor Bullen as his successors and they continued this work until 1987, when they passed
it on to a later generation.
Dr. Bach would pick the flowers fresh each morning, when they were still wet, and placed them in a
bowl filled with fresh spring water and let them sit in the direct sunlight for a few hours. There is no
need to harm the plant, for the flower has the soul s information, thus it is harvested just before the

Motorcycle Helmet Laws 2
Over the past 30 years, many states have enacted mandatory helmet laws for motorcycle drivers.
There have been many states that have rescinded these laws for reasons that may not be known by
those most interested the motorcycle rider him/herself. Currently, less than half of all U.S. states
require helmets for motorcycle operators. One who is interested in this topic may wonder how those
that are in positions to give the thumbs up or thumbs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The author is interested in discovering the reasoning that the powers that be chose to allow her to have
the freedom
Motorcycle Helmet Laws 4 to decide whether or not she will don a helmet prior to embarking on a
journey. Her hypotheses as to the reasons are probably so far off base that she would be hesitant to
admit them to another. Ultimately, her quest is to evaluate the writings and attempt to discover if
mandatory helmet laws do, indeed, decrease injuries and deaths as a result of a motorcycle crash.
There are a variety of reasons a motorcycle driver makes the decision as to whether to wear a helmet
while riding vs. not wearing one. Some of the factors that influence this decision appear to be age,
demographics (urban vs. rural living), and style and size of motorcycle. Other factors involved are
where the person is riding (highway, city, side streets, rural areas, etc.) Weather conditions and time of
day (early morning, rush hour, nighttime) also should be taken into consideration. Maneuvering
through hundreds of vehicles on the road and the rising or setting sun in one s eyes have a bearing on
how well a driver can see. The incidence of accidents that result in injury and fatality has fluctuated
with the enactment and rescinding of mandatory helmet use. The United States federal government
has had a vacillating approach to the use of motorcycle helmets since 1967, when the National
Highway Safety Act (NHSA) was first

Information in Business
Information in Business

In business word wide the use of information technology systems is what keeps a business functioning
properly. Every business holds a substantial amount of information that they must learn to sort, utilize
and store efficiently. Everything a business does in their day to day operations requires the use of both
information and technology. Payments, employee information, records, client information, all of this
must be processed, stored, organized and analyzed for later use in the business. For example, at the
end of a year businesses will need to pull old records and reports so that they can make predictions for
future profit and pay their taxes to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This form of communication lets us communicate quickly and efficiently amongst each other, making
things much smoother for the customer because we do not transfer them around departments for
different issues. We also use this at management level for issues where another department told a
customer one thing and would conflict with the truth, we can then look at this and see the issue and
where it began and correct it internally.
In any business security is key to protecting the valuable information of a company. At Nextiva
security is managed using firewalls and antivirus systems. Each support section and corporate sales
office also takes precautionary measures to insure that sensitive information does not fall into the
wrong hands. Each computer has a password, so the computer cannot be accessed except by
authorized personnel. Each system is controlled by each individual employee having their own log in
information. All of the employee actions internally in the system can be pulled by management at any
time to insure the integrity of the employees. There is also a time out function, after a minute or two,
the system will automatically log out and access will be denied until you log in using your personal
credentials. These security measures protect the privacy of our customers and

Dentist Radiology
Radiology should be used in dentistry because it is needed to find hidden structures. According to the
article Dental X Rays, the ADA, American Dental Association makes clear, ... x ray pictures can show
cavities, hidden dental structures(such as wisdom teeth), and bone loss that cannot be seen during a
visual examination (ADA par. 1). This demonstrates that during a visual examination a dentist or
dental assistant might not be able to see hidden structures in the mouth. With a wisdom tooth it might
still be impacted, meaning it isn t out yet but it is there and might even be ready to come out. It is best
to find the wisdom tooth as soon as possible because it can affect the other teeth and cause infections.

Artemisia as a Feminist
Nanette Salomon, a very well known feminist writer, wrote the article, Judging Artemisia: A Baroque
Woman in Modern Art History. The article opens up with a discussion about the 2001 2 exhibition of
Orazio and Artemisia Gentileschi: Father and Daughter Painters in Baroque Italy. The author explains
that three things are unusual here: the fact that two famous artists were presented at the same time, that
they were related as father and daughter, and the fact that the woman was better known than the man.
Her intent in this article is to look at the effects of this trope (figure of speech) in the past and in the
present.
Salomon argues that this comparison technique has been the main feature or art historical analysis. It
puts a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The author also talks about the story of Susanna and the Elders. Apparently Artemisia Gentileschi
painted three versions of this biblical story at three different stages in her life, 1610, 1622, and 1649.
The author did a comparison on the three Susanna paintings and she argues that it is noticeable that
the abstracting qualities of the 1610 painting change its concept or meaning from one form of story
telling to another. She argues that the abstract form of story telling serves the purpose of finding a
visual equivalent to the deafening silence . She explains that the 1622 Susanna and the Elders speaks a
different language, and so does the 1649 version.
Nanette Salomon emphasizes that there are different ways to make sense of the changes in Artemisia s
three Susannas . One explanation may be that Artemisia s work show progressive naturalism or
realism which can be attributed to her development as an artist.
Judging Artemisia Gentileschi is a practice that is believed to have begun at the same time as aesthetic
judgment, back in the time of Vasari in the late sixteenth century.
To me, those are the main points of the article by Nanette Salomon. I think that she made a very good
historical and psychological approach on the subject. The strength of this article is that she provides a
lot of historical facts, and blends it together with her words and opinion.

  • 2. La Vita Nuova The promise of a new life at a wedding is an optimistic rebirth; the loss of a lover is an obligatory uprooting. Allegra Goodman s La Vita Nuova records the changed life of a freshly dumped bride to be. As she endures her altered life, Amanda occupies herself by babysitting her student Nathaniel. Amanda uses irony, dark humor, and juxtaposition as a coping mechanism; instead of facing the new life she has to live, she uses sardonic reflection to elongate her mourning period. When Amanda digs up memories of her ex fiancé, her timing and choice of anecdote help her wallow in rejection for longer. Reflecting on her breakup, she says We had too many differences... For example, I loved him and he didn t love me (Goodman). She proves this with the things she remembers her fiancé saying to her. There are two basic types of ex fiance quotes: insults with witty retorts from Amanda and compliments contrasted with Amanda s current cynical views. As an example of the former, while spending time with Nathaniel, Amanda thinks of her fiance s cutting words: It s hard to be with you, her fiancé had said. I feel like I m suffocating. • 4. Emotional Intelligence And Self Awareness Essay Introduction Emotional intelligence is conceptualized as a person s ability to overcome stress, communicate effectively, understand others, cope with challenges, and solve conflicts by identifying, using, understanding, and managing their emotions positively (Gines, 2015). Emotional intelligence allows individuals to understand others, without necessarily talking to them. This understanding is vital since it influences the way we relate with other people. Emotional intelligence can be defined using four components which include self awareness, self management, social awareness, and relationship management (Segal, Smith, Shubin, 2016). The essay focuses on these four components and the skills that help in building emotional intelligence. Components of Emotional Intelligence Self awareness involves the ability to understand and evaluate your own emotions through reflection, self comparisons and feedback from others (Steiner, 2014). Self awareness aims at enhancing self knowledge, behavioral, and emotional improvements, and accommodating weaknesses (Steiner, 2014). It allows individuals to understand how they think, behave, and respond to situations that they encounter. To achieve this, feedback from other people is required. People who are self aware are self driven, resourceful, eager to learn, self motivated, and problem solvers. They also portray independence of self concept (Steiner, 2014). • 11. Voltaire s View Of Candide Voltaire s Candide is a satirical work written in 1759 as a commentary during the Enlightenment. One of Voltaire s most famous works, it also functioned to reflect Voltaire s opinions. Candide is considered Voltaire s signature work in which he levels his sharpest criticism against nobility, philosophy, the church, and human cruelty. Though often considered a representative text of the Enlightenment era, the novel criticizes a number of Enlightenment philosophies. As reading and books were a sign of wealth in that time, the trend among nobility was reading. The criticisms and ridicule within the satirical nature of Candide had much to do with the nobility and their standards and ideas, especially in contrast with those of the lower classes. Through the form and technique of satire in Candide, Voltaire suggests the absurdity of societal principles and theories. Throughout the novel, Candide s teacher and philosopher, Pangloss, persists in his paternalistic optimism theory. He continually expresses his belief that this world is the best of all possible worlds and that everything happens and exists for a reason. One example is after the earthquake in Lisbon, killing 30,000 people, Pangloss comments, For, said he, all that is for the best. If there is a volcano at Lisbon it cannot be elsewhere. When Napoleon rose to the position of an emperor, he became the head of a huge army battalion set up by his previous predecessor. The French army was a conglomeration of loyal citizens who were aware of the cause for their engagement in warfare. They were doing the fighting out of free will and did not act as mercenaries as was the case in the larger parts of Europe. Abdul Kalam the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007 once said: In a democracy, the well being, individuality, and happiness of every citizen are important for the overall prosperity, peace, and happiness of the nation. This quote perfectly explains the two of the most different pieces of literature. Anthem by Ayn Rand and the movie Rope by Alfred Hitchcock. Anthem is in a dystopia where the word I was not used nor was Ego . They live in almost the dark ages with no electricity or a democracy. Everyone works for each other and if you were slightly different from the rest you were punished. But one man came out of the trance and realized what was happening, that equality and individuality were nowhere to be found. On the other hand Rope was taken place in the late 40 s. But Rope was about men who thought because they were superior and rules do not apply to them like murder. Ayn Rand Anthem and Alfred Hitchcock Rope have very different views of how an individual should view himself. Rand believes that individuality is key for a society to work. In her book, she said For the coming of that day shall I fight, I and my sons and my chosen friends. For the freedom of Man. For his rights. For his life. For his honor. Rand protagonist just got out of a community where you could not think for yourself and now he is able to say I without fearing death. Rand was able to show how inequality can change a person whole understanding of life. Now her protagonist wants more citizens to know this thing called individuality. This is an evil thing to say, for it is a transgression, the great transgression of Preference, to love any among men better than the others, since we must love all men and all men are our friends this is what a community was for Rand s protagonist. • 24. Summary Of The Paranoid Style In American Politics The Prevalence of Political Paranoia In the controversial essay, which was first published in the November 1964 issue of Harper s Magazine, The Paranoid Style in American Politics, Richard Hofstadter argues how the prevalence of paranoia in American politics has dominated the country. Hofstadter asserts American politics have been governed by paranoia since the creation of the United States, and it has manifested itself into the minds of both average and intellectuals Americans. He contends that paranoia has played a pivotal role in American politics by fostering fear in citizens regarding issues such as gender, ethnicity, race, and religion and proclaims the reason fear is heightened in citizens has more to do with the style in which panic is spread than any other factor. Furthermore, the author claims the sole issue dictating American politics is not simply paranoia, but rather a problem internationally caused, primarily, through misconceptions and false imaginations. Hofstadter also explores the affiliation paranoia has to power, to corruption, and to the government. Additionally, he examines the reasoning behind many skeptics and paranoids in the country today and describes the techniques with which they spread panic and hysteria, through methods such as books, speeches, and media. The Paranoid Style in American Politics, by Richard Hofstadter, demonstrates the critical role paranoia plays in dictating American politics through the utilization of academic diction, anecdotal evidence, logical appeals, an explanatory tone, and chronological organization. Hofstadter employs a scholastic tone by incorporating academic diction into his essay, to establish credibility when discussing paranoia and its roots in American politics. When examining paranoia, Hofstadter argues that it establishes a greater affinity for bad causes than good (Hofstadter 77). Through this phrase, and the language Hofstadter applies, it can be concluded that the intended audience for this piece is intellectuals. The author s diction and tone identify Hofstadter s belief of paranoia doing little to spark progressive change in America, but rather hindering the development of policies and activities which would combat real problems. ... Key Performance Indicators ( Kpis ) As you know, in our current business environment, most companies have finite resources and budget but they share a common objective which is to do more with less and stay nimble . Extracting key insight from business data is crucial for management to formulate strategy to drive improvement in our organization to counter competition as the industry evolves. In addition, having the information at the right time to departments and individuals will motivate the employees to act on this information in relation to corporate or departmental goals. Due to the recent trend in visualization and advanced technology in dashboard, corporations are increasingly captivated with dashboards due to their vast ability to allow the users visualize data in an interactive and engaging manner. The ability to use key analytics and technology to manage performance through the use of key performance indicators (KPIs) provides great benefits to companies and corporations. Companies may use KPIs to set targets, identify trends, determine potential issues and opportunities, and plan future activities to help increase performance. With that in mind, I recommend to start an initiative to develop a set of relevant KPIs to better measure our contract performance. The play Trifles by Susan Glaspell is an interesting story about a woman named Mrs.Minnie Wright. Mrs. Minnie wright does not actually take part in the scene but is actually the main character throughout the play. The focus of the play is about whether or not Minnie Wright did in fact murder her husband, John Wright or did he commit suicide. Throughout the scene, they bring in people to look over or find evidence that can be used to give testimony at her trial. Mrs. Minnie wright should be found innocent of her husband s death, It does not matter if she had a part in his death or not. The fact that she was not happy because of her husband s attitude towards her tells the audience that she was not happy and was a captive in what was supposed to be her home. Mrs.Minnie Wright does not deserve to be condemned for the crime of murdering of her husband. Mrs.Wright should not be condemned to prison or death because she has already suffered enough although her marriage and needs to have enough room and space to be able to take a breath. There is no concrete evidence that she had a hand in his death. The only evidence that seems to be against her is the fact that she is not acting the way the men want her to. One of the most perplexing problems facing them was the question of how to elect a president. They had to choose from three main systems: elect the president by congress, the people, or electors. However, my confusion was cleared up by professor Mbiti s following explanation: It is not enough to learn and embrace a faith which is active once a week, either on Sunday or Friday, while the rest of the week is virtually empty. It is not enough to embrace a faith which is confined to a church building or mosque, which is locked up six days and opened only once or twice a week. April 28, 2015 Alexander Pushkin and Robert Frost both have written poems about autumn. There is a correlation between these two poems since they share many romantic features. Autumn and After Apple Picking are both alike and different in many ways. Alexander Pushkin was born in Moscow, Russia and lived from 1799 until 1837. He wrote from a very young age, not only writing poetry, but also dramas and novels. He died in a duel when he was 39 years old. Autumn is a poem that contains many of the elements of romanticism. The first quality is feelings. This whole poem oozes the feelings of Pushkin. The first line is October comes at last. The feeling of relief is obvious, and there is a sense of an event finally coming. It is as if his patience was being tested and wearing thin. He could hardly wait for autumn. In the second stanza he writes, This is my time! What is the spring to me? Spring makes me ill: my mind is never free from dizzy dreams, my blood s in constant ferment. He clearly does not like the spring season at all. It is boring and there is a tone of disgust. He compares the fun and excitement of winter. There is definitely a large range between the way he feels about what spring brings and what winter brings. Winter is almost bearable to Pushkin. Winter is fun. The author is interested in discovering the reasoning that the powers that be chose to allow her to have the freedom Motorcycle Helmet Laws 4 to decide whether or not she will don a helmet prior to embarking on a journey. Her hypotheses as to the reasons are probably so far off base that she would be hesitant to admit them to another. Ultimately, her quest is to evaluate the writings and attempt to discover if mandatory helmet laws do, indeed, decrease injuries and deaths as a result of a motorcycle crash. There are a variety of reasons a motorcycle driver makes the decision as to whether to wear a helmet while riding vs. not wearing one. Some of the factors that influence this decision appear to be age, demographics (urban vs. rural living), and style and size of motorcycle. Other factors involved are where the person is riding (highway, city, side streets, rural areas, etc.) Weather conditions and time of day (early morning, rush hour, nighttime) also should be taken into consideration. Maneuvering through hundreds of vehicles on the road and the rising or setting sun in one s eyes have a bearing on how well a driver can see. The incidence of accidents that result in injury and fatality has fluctuated with the enactment and rescinding of mandatory helmet use. The United States federal government has had a vacillating approach to the use of motorcycle helmets since 1967, when the National Highway Safety Act (NHSA) was first ... According to the article Dental X Rays, the ADA, American Dental Association makes clear, ... x ray pictures can show cavities, hidden dental structures(such as wisdom teeth), and bone loss that cannot be seen during a visual examination (ADA par. 1). The article opens up with a discussion about the 2001 2 exhibition of Orazio and Artemisia Gentileschi: Father and Daughter Painters in Baroque Italy. The author explains that three things are unusual here: the fact that two famous artists were presented at the same time, that they were related as father and daughter, and the fact that the woman was better known than the man. Her intent in this article is to look at the effects of this trope (figure of speech) in the past and in the present. Salomon argues that this comparison technique has been the main feature or art historical analysis. It puts a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The author also talks about the story of Susanna and the Elders. Apparently Artemisia Gentileschi painted three versions of this biblical story at three different stages in her life, 1610, 1622, and 1649. The author did a comparison on the three Susanna paintings and she argues that it is noticeable that the abstracting qualities of the 1610 painting change its concept or meaning from one form of story telling to another. She argues that the abstract form of story telling serves the purpose of finding a visual equivalent to the deafening silence . She explains that the 1622 Susanna and the Elders speaks a different language, and so does the 1649 version. Nanette Salomon emphasizes that there are different ways to make sense of the changes in Artemisia s three Susannas . One explanation may be that Artemisia s work show progressive naturalism or realism which can be attributed to her development as an artist. Judging Artemisia Gentileschi is a practice that is believed to have begun at the same time as aesthetic judgment, back in the time of Vasari in the late sixteenth century. To me, those are the main points of the article by Nanette Salomon. I think that she made a very good historical and psychological approach on the subject. The strength of this article is that she provides a lot of historical facts, and blends it together with her words and opinion. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
