Louis Comfort Tiffany Research Papers
Louis Comfort Tiffany is connected with Long Island, New York for his grand and elaborate estate,
Laurelton Hall. In 1916, after Tiffany s personal involvement in the design of ecclesiastical windows
had ended with his retirement to Laurel Hollow and the establishment of his art school. (Spinzia).
Tiffany s mansion, in Laurel Hollow, was designed in an electric style using elements of Art Nouveau.
This complex and intricate work of Tiffany s is the ultimate culmination of his great talents and
showcases the multiple mediums he mastered. Tiffany s power house smoke stack with its stained

Louis C. Tiffany established his own firm in 1885 and his focus was on new methods of glass
manufacture. Although Louis Comfort Tiffany s company is best known by the name of Tiffany
Studios, his vast creative enterprise operated under various names through the years. ( Tiffany Studios
). Among these names are Tiffany Glass Company, Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company, Allied
Arts and the most recognizable, Tiffany Studios. Tiffany wanted to transform and transcend the skills
of Medieval stained glass producers. In 1881, Tiffany registered a patent for opalescent window glass.
This new treatment was accomplished by combing and manipulating several colors to created a range
of hues and dimensional effects. Tiffany believed that this new method allowed for more nature in the
medium because it enabled the light to transform the glass rather than painting on the glass. Tiffany
believed that nature should be the primary focus of artwork, fitting within the Art Nouveau style. This
way of creating the art allowed nature to play a key part in the artwork through light. Tiffany s stained
glass windows were displayed in a number of different buildings ranging from chapels, to homes, to
even the White House. In addition to his famous stained glass, Tiffany was also known for his Favrile
, blown glass vases and bowls. These glass pieces quickly became celebrated worldwide for its
iridescence and magnificent colors. Tiffany had a number of his pieces displayed around the world,
including being sold in galleries such as Siegried Bing s L Art Nouveau. In the United States Tiffany
created a chapel interior for the World s Columbian Exposition of 1893. Visitors entered another world
of intricate, reflective glass mosaic surfaces and light filtered through the intense colors of stained
glass windows a world that enveloped them and at the same time dwarfed them through its massive
architectural forms. (Louis

Civil Resistance Movement Essay
Another successful civil resistance movement in South East Asia was during the 1980 s in South
Korea, this movement was significantly influenced by the peoples power movement during the 1980 s
in the Philippines which was also successful. South Korea was also very heavily influenced by
religion by a strong catholic ethos throughout the country. The government tried to cleanse the country
between 1980 and 1983 to try to silence all democratic activists, many of whom were purged or
arrested according to (Lakey, 2009). After 1983, the authoritarian president Chun Doo Hwan was
afraid that he may not be re elected due to the hostility he had shown towards the democratic activists,

In 1985, the New Korea Democratic Party became the main opposition in the National Assembly. The
leader of this party came back to Korea after two years in exile, facing possible arrest or death, but had
two congressional representatives accompanying him for protection. This clearly shows that much like
the civil resistance movement in the Philippines, America aided the country in becoming a democracy.
South Korea, like the Philippines, built good relations with the United States during and after World
War II, this shows that for a peaceful civil resistance to be successful, they must have both powerful
religious factors and good alliances with powerful countries. If the powerful countries see a country
which they have good alliances with being demeaned by a corrupt government, they often feel the
need to intervene and try to come to a peaceful conclusion. South Korea is a predominately influenced
by Christianity, therefore, like the Philippines, there seems to be a link between being a religious

This is a movie about a mother named Sara Goldfarb played by Ellen Burstyn, her son and only child
Harry played by Jared Leto, his best friend Tyrone C. Love played by Marlon Wayans, and Harry s
girlfriend Marion Silver played by Jennifer Connelly.
The movie opens with a scene in which Harry is in the process of taking his mother s television

whole universe. Her favorite show is one where a man who has lost a lot of weight runs a game show.

It is important to plan the date and time of every business appointment carefully before arriving so that
your customer is prepared and expecting you. If the customer is prepared for the sales meeting, it is
more likely to be successful as they will start the meeting ready to make a commitment. I have

said that 75% of the customer s decision will be based on the movements and the impression you give

then? however, don t go too far you don t want to go over the top and distract the customer from the

To avoid objections, begin the meeting by asking both Tim and John exactly what they are looking for.
Ask questions along the lines of the following:
1. We ve had a lot of contact before now shall we go through this together?
2. Excellent, how would you like the current strip to be an improvement on the team s former strip?
3. At Sports Direct, our team s aim is to make the customer s experience positive. How can we achieve
this in your eyes?
4. Have you any ideas to share with our team as to what you were imagining?
5. Have you a budget in mind for this exciting new venture?
6. What are your priorities in relation to the new strip?

Woman Warrior Essay
A Warrior s Triumph
The Woman Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston presents the story of a girl trapped between the
cultures of her surrounding environment and that which her mother and family have forced upon her.
Knowing only the Chinese way of life, this girl s mother attempts to familiarize her daughter, whom is
also the narrator, with the history of their family. The mother shares this heritage through the use of
stories in hopes the narrator will be prepared for her ultimate return to China, which is a life
completely foreign to her own. Through these stories and the strong influence of the surrounding
American culture, the narrator s life and imagination spin off in a new direction. She is confronted by

These expectations increased when she was in the presence of great power, [her] mother talking story
(20). In one particular situation, the narrator recalls her mother singing about Fa Mu Lan, the woman
warrior. Although her mother expected her daughter to become a wife or a slave, the narrator had a
different idea; she would grow up a woman warrior (20). As a young girl, she said that she couldn t
tell where the stories left off and the dreams began (19). This is the case in White Tigers. The narrator
s dream state takes readers into the mind of a girl who attempts to please her mother and entire family
by becoming a woman warrior. This is possibly an attempt to subside much of the harsh ridicule she
receives from her mother due to cultural differences. Although this is a key factor in her early
childhood, she learns to block out these criticisms as she grows older.
There is significant evidence of this growing maturity in Shaman. In the beginning of the chapter, the
reader can find an increased pressure placed on the narrator while hearing about her mother s bravery
and intelligence at medical school. This story added on to those her mother told about World War II
fighter planes, which terrified the narrator for many years. Also, as a young girl, her mother would

Diary of a Napoleonic Foot Soldier
During the years 1800 to 1815 Napoleon Bonaparte was preparing a large army. His goal was to
spread the idea of the French Revolution and ultimately expanded France s bountiful pride and glory.
The way this was going to happen, according to Napoleon, was through expanding French territory. In
order to do this he would need a large army, so that involved enlisting men by conscription. The army
was filled with French men, as well as men from Germany and other surrounding areas. The Diary of
a Napoleonic Foot Soldier looks first hand look at the life of an average soldier at the time, Jakob
Walter. He was a nineteen year old german boy enlisted by conscription and assigned to regiment

He did supply the men with clothing, but not the kind of clothing they needed for the Russian winter,
because Napoleon was not expecting for the expansion to take as much time as it did. The men were
not always lacking in food, clothes, and shelter, in some places they were treated well and given
plenty of alcohol and food to keep them occupied. Some areas the men passed through they would
exploit the common people to get ahold of the necessities they needed. From the beginning Walter was
relentless in getting the things that he knew he would need. When he had to requisition food from a
village he found a Jewish man, he had to chase after him and finally caught up to him in an attic of a
house in which there were many women and children. In Walter s own words he said, I took him,
dragged him down the two flights of stairs, and had to hold him by the coat and kick him forward for
two hours, threatening him if he should fail to lead me the right village (pg. 6). This was just one
example of how poorly the common people were treated and this continued throughout every
campaign, but was soon returned to them when they entered into Russia. The soldiers were faced with
attacks from the Cossacks in Russia and

Private Pensions Essay
For most Americans, retirement has become a lifelong goal. To retire comfortably, you need income,
and this income can come from one of three sources: savings, Social Security, or a company pension
plan. The unfortunate fact is that Americans save very little money nowadays, and for anyone under
forty, Social Security is a very hollow promise. For most, private pensions are the key to a
comfortable retirement. When it comes to private pensions, however, most companies and employees
themselves don t contribute enough money, meaning that future retirees will have to work longer if
they want to maintain their pre retirement standard of liv¬ing into retirement. There are two types of
private pensions in America: the defined benefit pension ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Additionally, the costs of the pensions were also supported by the federal government in the form of
company tax deductions for whatever money was set aside for a workers pension plan. Over time,
these pension plans for industrial workers became very generous. Everything seemed promising, until
foreign competitors with no such pension obligations began to emerge. Many of these foreign
companies paid lower wages, but even worse, had products that were just as good as and sometimes
better than American manufactured products. When the once strong labor monopoly began to crumble,
pensions became a massive and unsustainable cost to most companies, many of which were trying to
stay afloat in an extremely competitive global market. Many employees thought that their retirement
was secure and agreed to lower wages with the promise of a generous pension plan. Sadly, companies
began to trim the fat away in order to survive, and many American s pensions were on the chopping
block. There just wasn t enough money in the funds to support them anymore. Millions of Americans
were faced with the harsh reality that jobs don t last forever and economic security is not guaranteed.
Many people thought that they had good unions, good pensions, and good healthcare. That isn t the
case today. Slowly, it all began to erode away at such a gradual pace that most didn t even notice until
it was too late for them to do anything about

Essay on Humorous Wedding Speech by Brother of the Groom
Humorous Wedding Speech by Brother of the Groom
Good afternoon, Ladies and Gentleman It s my job to reply to the toast to the bridesmaids and in
doing so, say a couple of nice things about George. You know, tell you about some of his good points.
The problem is he doesn t have any good points. Well, except for being naturally gifted at sports. We
do, after all, come from the same gene pull.
So, on behalf of the bridesmaid, Claire, I would like to start by thanking George for his kind words. I

stunning, as always. And, for a change, George has scrubbed up quite nicely too. He looks very

The truth is, George has and always will be the prototypical big brother. All through my life, he has
blazed trails for me. In school, I would always be greeted by new teachers with the comment, I
remember your brother he was my student and a great guy , or, I hope you are as well mannered as
your brother , or, Will you be taking over the role as the school idiot now your brother has left? . But
in all seriousness, following in someone s footsteps is never easy, but the paths that my brother paved
for me made it particularly difficult.
A story I want to share with you about my dear brother took place about eight years ago. After a night
on the tiles, George returned home and went straight to bed. After a short while, he started feeling a
little bit nauseous and, in a moment of drunken clarity, opted to vomit out of his bedroom window.
This isn t as foolish as it sounds, because the garage roof protruded under George s room. So, rather
than stain his carpet and surely be caught in the morning, he hoped the roof and gutter would bear the
brunt of the evidence of a very drunk young man until the following day, when it could easily be
washed away. A great strategy you may think, but it had a one fatal flaw. The force with which George
heaved far overshot both the garage roof and the gutter, but was just enough to land squarely on the
windscreen of dad s car. And there it remained until a very angry dad dragged

Detroit Bankruptcy

What caused of Detroit s descent from a wealthy, vital city into one where ruins are common and the
city is bankrupt.
I. Introduction
December 3, 2013, Motor City Detroit officially declared bankruptcy, it became the largest bankruptcy
issue in the history of the United States of America.
II. Background
Detroit is the largest city in Michigan and is belong to Wayne County. Founded in 1701 by French
explorer and fur trader Antoine de La Mothe Cadillac . It is an important city, the world s traditional
car center and music capital, located in the northeastern United States. It named after the Detroit River

In 2004 and 2005, Detroit was ranked second in the nation s most dangerous city . This is not bad,
2003 and 2007, Detroit is the most dangerous city ranking highest level of the list.
III. Major Point 2
Exploring the decline of Detroit, in fact, the welfare system is also inseparable. The high welfare of
car workers is the glory and tradition of the US automotive industry, opening the American car era ,
but also a heavy burden of sustainable development. The car trade union make manufacturers
struggling to pay worker s wage, not to mention the reduction of efficiency. The industry is declining,
the unemployment rate is rising; taxation is decreasing, welfare insurance has increased. In order to
maintain the operation, Detroit government can only be deficit day by day.
IV. Conclusion
A bustling metropolis of the United States eventually reduced to miserable world and had to declare
bankruptcy protection. It highlighted the failure of Detroit s urban governance transformation, which
mixed race contradictions show the division of American society. After it ruined, politicians can easily
just leave, the most suffering is the bottom of Detroit

Dealing With Performers and Non-Performers and Performance...
Dealing with performers and non performers and performance management Two contradictory
theories exist regarding how persons are likely to perform in groups or teams. According to the theory
of social loafing, it is far easier to conceal one s laziness in a group setting than in a setting where one
s individual output is being measured. A good example of this is in a game of tug o war. When two
people are engaged in the match, it is obvious who is the stronger person will be based upon the
visible winner, so both people are likely to try very hard to win to avoid social embarrassment. But
when there are a large number of people on either side of the rope, people will pull less hard,
rationalizing that others will make up for the effort. One solution to the problem of social loafing is to
measure individuals working in teams according to individual as well as team output, but this has the
disadvantage of creating friction on the team because people will focus on their own, personal efforts
to a greater degree than the ultimate team goal and output. To avoid social loafing, make sure
everyone in a group knows that they can easily be evaluated by others (Straker, 2012, Social loafing).
The opposing theory of group interactions is that of social facilitation, which suggests that in a group
setting people will perform at a higher level than they normally would alone, because of the inspiring
presence of the group. The physical arousal of the presence of the group, the

The Book Of Eli Movie Analysis
Hello all,
The movie I have chosen is The Book of Eli. This was a highly rated movie and made 157.1 million at
the box office and won an award called the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actor in a Motion
Picture. The movie is about a man named Eli played by Denzel Washington, we watch as Eli journeys
across a waste land as a lone wolf. While watching the movie we see Eli walk across a ruined
landscape. One review named Roger Ebert a well known American film critic who passed away in
2013 states It grips your attention, and then the end throws in several WTF! Moments, which are a

wandering the wasteland with only his faith to show him the way. Now while this is a major difference
between the two, since Eli is seemingly revolved around religion while the narrator in the War of the
Worlds almost seems to denounce it. We learn a lot about the surroundings and not so much about Eli
or the narrator. This to me seems to coexist with The War of the Worlds because we don t get to know
a ton about the character themselves, the narrator leaves it up to the reader to decide what type of

What Is A Probable Cause
a. I would try to get a search warrant. Besides that and making sure the suspect knows he can have a
lawyer present, I would try to get more information out of him. In this case, the probable cause (or
more than reasonable suspicion) would be the incriminating statements. Obviously this depends on the
circumstances, but if the suspects attempts to flee, hide, tries to destroy evidence, gives evasive
answers, or perhaps he has a record, or his behavior is suspicious or unusual, then that would be
acceptable as well. However, the probable cause would be stronger if there were more of these
examples present in the suspects behavior. In addition to probable cause, the warrant must have an

Is The Theme Of Power In The Film Out Of Sight By Steven...
In the film Out of Sight (Steven Soderbergh, 1998) elements of mise en scene, lighting, editing and
characters reveal the themes of identity, love and power. The theme of power directly relates to the
economic boom in the United States in the 1990s and the population s strive for success. These themes
are brought out through the repetitive use of the color red in the film and are also used to relate back to
the title.
In relation to other American action films released in 1998, Out of Sight is a very fast faced movie
much like the rest of them. The fast paced editing style that Soderbergh utilized in the film relates very
much to the race to power that was so prevalent in the 1990s. When the economy started to boom, the

Symbolism In Pat Conroy s The Water Is Wide
Pat Conroy s memoir, The Water is Wide, is about his life on Daufuskie Island, also known as
Yamacraw Island in the book. Conroy spent a year teaching on the island in a little two room
schoolhouse. The Yamacrawans were rural African American people that by leaving on the island had
basically no knowledge of anything beyond the island. Conroy tells of all the troubles he faced while
teaching on the island and all the struggles he faced with outside forces. Conroy uses the setting, the
title of his book, symbolism, and different themes to express what the year he spent teaching there was
like. The setting of the novel is the south, on an island just off the coast of South Carolina. The island
is connected to the mainland of South Carolina by a river, and the only way to get on or off the island
is by boat. Conroy uses the setting of this book to reveal just how cut off the Yamacrawans are from
the real world , and how much this has affected the students he is working with. Conroy states that
The twentieth century has basically ignored the presence of Yamacraw (Conroy 3), . The students have
no idea what kind of world they are living in, All around the room sat human beings of various sizes
and hues who were not aware that a world surrounded them, a world they would be forced to enter,
and enter soon (Conroy 37) , and this worries Conroy. The title of the book is also an important part of
the story. Pat Conroy chose this title in reflection of the river between the

A contending point of view would be that Iran and Israel would get enraged and ensue in advanced

Scopes Trial In Inherit The Wind
In their play Inherit the Wind, Lawrence and Lee s fictionalization of the Scopes Trial illustrates how
the mid twentieth century movement against intellectualism infringed upon the Constitutional rights of
Americans. By manipulating details, Lee and Laurence distanced themselves from the repercussions
they may have faced during the McCarthyism era. Furthermore, the addition of new characters and
plot differences makes for a more entertaining play. The playwrights specifically avoid referencing the
Scopes Trial by adding a vague setting to their play. The stage directions are set as Time: Summer. Not
too long ago. Place: A small town. (Lawrence). Additionally, the authors alter character names and add
characters. For example, Rachel, who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the mid twentieth century, Joseph McCarthy spearheaded a movement to find and prosecute
Communists. Countless Americans were accused of being affiliated with the Communist party. Thus,
politicians, actors, writers, directors; people from all walks of life were very afraid of Joseph
McCarthy. They dared not to question him directly or even express their criticisms in private.
Americans fear of McCarthy became deeply ingrained within their own minds (Llewellyn 1).
Similarly in the Cates trial, Rachel is afraid to criticize fundamentalists such as Brady or Reverend
Brown even in her own thoughts. Near the end of Act 3, Rachel confesses, You see, I haven t really
thought very much. I was always afraid of what I might think so it seemed safer not to think at all. But
now I know. (Lawrence 77).To criticize McCarthy during the McCarthy era was to criticize America
itself criticizing McCarthy was akin to supporting the godless Communists. By comparison, criticizing

Chuck Berry Biography
Chuck Berry is known by many as the Father of rock n roll. Berry was born in St. Louis Missouri on
October 18, 1926. Growing up Chuck wasn t the most innocent person. By the age of 17 he had
dropped out of school and was sent to jail for being involved in an armed robbery. In the early 1950 s,
after getting out of jail early for good behavior, Chuck joined a band started playing in a jazz club. By
1955 he was signed to chess records. His music style was a mix of country and blues. Chuck wrote,
preformed, and produced all his songs. In 1959 he released the album Berry is on Top. The cover of

album is called Almost Grown. When I listen to the song the first thing I noticed about it was the
course, Don t bother me, leave me alone. Anyways I m almost grown. I think this song is the way for
Chuck to tell people to leave me alone because he s been trying to get his life together. Some of the
instruments that I noticed were the guitar and the piano. The beat of the song is very energetic and it
made me want to dance. The next two songs on the album are called Carol and Maybelline . Both of
them are named after females. Carol has a very Hawaiian/beachy feel to it. It sounds upbeat and
groovy, but the lyrics kind of sound like a advice. For example, Oh, Carol, don t let him steal your
heart away. If feels like he s talking to younger girls about being careful around men. I think this is
something a high school girl in the 50 s would listen to. Maybelline on the other hand has a very
country/hillbilly feel to it. Sounds like a fun song to listen to if you were drunk at a bar. It is a little
faster than your average country song but it still works really well with the instruments that are

Suffering In Oedipus The King And Antigone
With Fate Comes Suffering
Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls; the most massive characters are seared with scars.
(Gibran, Khalil) Khalil Gibran, a famous Lebanese American artist, poet, and writer once spoke a
quote which relates to two Greek tragedies, Oedipus the King and Antigone. The quote analyzes the
tragic characters in each play because they must endure pain before, during, and after their downfalls
in order to grow. In Oedipus the King, written in 430 B.C, Oedipus has been named the king of
Thebes, which is suffering from a plague. He later finds out that he killed his own father and married
his mother named Jocasta whom he had four children with. In Antigone, which focuses on a teenage
girl of the same name, her uncle, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A major misunderstanding is, Ismene also takes the blame for the burial of their brother Polynices.
Ismene confesses, I did it yes / if only she consents I share the guilt, / the consequences too.
(Sophocles, 604 606) This is a misunderstanding because we see Ismene confessing, and Antigone
does not want her to die and take blame for a deed that she did not take part in. We see this throughout
the play that Ismene has strong family ties, but is not gutsy enough to take part in anything against
human law. This also exhibits that Ismene s loyalty only goes so far and is meant to teach the audience
to think before you act and stay true to your beliefs. This quote also relates to the role of women in
society, how they were meant to stay quiet and not defy men. Antigone goes against this idea because
she buries Polynices disregarding the fact that Creon placed a human law against it. Sophocles
intended to teach the audience that women were starting to become freer and wanted to make their
own decisions, as well as, that it was not uncommon to support your family even if it meant dying for
a cause that you believed in. Even if Ismene was not in agreement with the actions of Antigone, she
still wanted to help and stick up for the rights of women, by defying their uncle. Humanity has come a
long way since the early motives of women s freedom. From obtaining the right to vote in public

The Importance Of Women In College Education
In the us women with some college education have more opportunities for higher paying jobs and this
has affected society by making women more independent. Having an education does not mean a job is
in the near future. Having an education is a way to establish self esteem, better one s self as well as
gain knowledge. Women s colleges and universities persist around the world, even as the vast majority
of tertiary institutions are open to men and women. In nearly every nation, women can attend even the
most elite formerly all male universities, and in several nations women are many of all college
students. Questions therefore arise about the continued need for a single sex sector in the 21st century
(Renn , 2012)
Education is considered as the critical software for development as it shapes the destiny for every
society. Currently the initiative is driven by the Millennium Development Goals and the goals of
Education for All. The MDG s with direct reference to women education are Goal 2: Achieve
universal primary education and Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women. This means
that everybody in the society should be given a chance to attend school, women included (Anne
Syomwene , 2015)
Firstly, women in society are all invited to obtain a higher education. The issue is not that women not
being allowed to obtain an education the problem is that not enough women are aware that college is a
stepping stone in life. Not enough women come out of high school necessarily

The Most Common Way Computers Use Communication
Society is based on flourishing technology. The main source of technology today is computers.
Computers are everywhere and they have many modern uses. Without computers the modern
generation would not exist. Since computers have such an important role in communicating and
gaining information, it would almost be impossible to perform these activities without them. Over the
past few years, computers have become an essential asset in the way business industries run and make
decisions. Computers are transforming the way one lives; they have impacted every aspect of social
and business life. Therefore, one must have knowledge of basic computer skills and software in order
to keep up in the business world because these skills are essential in communication, management,
and research.
Communication is the key to gain and maintain clients and other important contacts (Crowder). Email
is the most common way computers use communication. An email account gives a business quick
access to instant messaging in addition to contacts. Being able to contact coworkers from a computer
has made communication extremely efficient. Every company has an email for customer service so
they can keep their customers updated and satisfied. When companies hire new employees, they
usually look through a personal email with someone s resume attached to it. This gives the employer
quick and easy feedback to see if someone fits the qualifications of the company. So, an applicant has

Game Theory as it Relates to Abortion in Canada
Flanagan s Status Quo
In 1988 abortion legislation was abolished by the supreme court of Canada (Flanagan 120). Current
law was deemed to violate a women s security of person under the Canadian Charter of Rights and
Freedoms (Wikipedia). Drafting and passing abortion legislation became the responsibility of the
current Prime Minister and the House of Commons (Flanagan 121). Attempts by Brian Mulroney to
introduce abortion legislation into the House of Commons and senate failed repeatedly (Flanagan
121). ) Despite public opinion favoring moderate legislation, abortion in Canada remains unlegislated
(Flanagan 121).Under the circumstances stated why does Canadian abortion law remain in a state of

The Members of Parliament could now be categorized according to their opinions. Flanagan analyzed
this data by placing the MP s into seven groups:
1. 40 Resolute Pro choice who wanted to maintain the status quo
2. 12 Pro choice compromisers who voted for amendments one and five
3. 17 Pro choice leaning moderates who voted for amendments one, five and the government

4. 38 moderates who voted for the government resolution
5. 12 Pro life leaning moderates who supported the government resolution plus amendment two
6. 9 Pro life compromisers who voted for amendment three and the government resolution
7. 96 Resolute pro lifers who voted for amendment two and/or three and against the government

A strange phenomenon had occurred: the ninety six pro lifer s voted against the government resolution

mentions that the expected outcome would be for the majority to coalesce around the position of the
median voter...as is predicted by elementary rational analysis of uni dimensional conflicts (Flanagan

violate its expectations?

Cool Hand Luke s Relationship
There are many movies that make the contrast of the lives of prisoners and their guards. So often do
we see a colorful group of people who struggle under the control of a tyrannical leader, struggling to
keep both their spirits and sanity up. Cool Hand Luke is not an exception to these films. However, it
does contain a main character with a nonchalant type attitude that irks his superiors and earns respect
from his fellow prisoners, which is not often seen. This leads to him becoming a very popular
character in the prison, specifically to his new admirer Dragline. Dragline the former head honcho
among the prisoners grew quite fond of Luke due to his admiration for Luke s coolness. This new

an opportunity and jumped on the truck as it sped away. Luke and Dragline made it to a river to hide
the truck and Dragline talks about how Luke fooled the bosses. Luke replies you can t fool them about
something like that, they broke me (Rosenberg, Caroll, 1967). Revealing that he was truly made to

that Dragline suffered a distortion of action. He knew that it would be wise to stay and finish out his

department did very well as they came with articles just before launching the advert letting people
know when and where will they be able to see the advert. The personal selling was great as well as
when going to the check out they would ask the customers if they found everything they need and also
if they would be interested in buying the snowman book, etc. Direct marketing was great as well as
there was a twitter account where you could fallow the snowman s adventure, and competitions on
Facebook and in store. An improvement I would say it would be that maybe the customers where
interested in more sales promotions and more direct marketing would convince customers to buy more
products and come to John Lewis more often. Although the Advert did cost a huge amount of money
that is nothing compared to the £157.8 million revenue they made last year. Another reason why I
think that the campaign was successful was that the advert they made has been voted as the year s
most favourite TV advert. And finally the last reason why I am sure that the campaign was extremely
successful was that none of the directors of John Lewis expected a record breaker sales figure. Web

The Orign of Bones Essay
Haller (1763) injected a clear fluid into the periosteum showing that the origin of bone is the artery

Pritchard (1946) studied what triggers osteogenesis: the same stimulus causing inflammation or
mechanical stress. How was the study conducted? Pritchard (1946) suggested osteogenesis is a result
of humoral stimulus not mechanical in relation to the skull vault.

Alcohol helps people remove their barriers; lose their inhibitions, and form friendships, relationships,

In addition to the Australian drinking culture, at 18 years old you are legally an adult. Thus, society

Imagery In The Scarlet Ibis By James Hurst
A soft bird, standing in the cold wind ready to be one with the small child. The scarlet ibis is lifted
from the world, and once again flying free. James Hurst, author of The Scarlet Ibis introduces readers
to this very image through the life journey of his main character, Doodle. While Doodle is symbolized
by a bird, Hurst also uses other symbols and imagery to create a mournful tone throughout his short
story. Hurst uses the coffin and scarlet ibis to show symbolism. Hurst also uses the flower garden to
create a better tone. Direct words and thoughts from the characters, and images suggests that James
Hurst is mournful to the thought of death.
Hurst uses similes in relation to other things to give the reader a better idea of the description

Effects Of Nuclear Radiation On The Environment And The...
Overview of the Book What this book provides is a case study about the effects of nuclear radiation on
the environment and the people of Marshall Island. Furthermore, the book addresses the various socio
economic issues arising from the testing of nuclear weapons by the US in the Pacific island between
1946 and 1958 (Barker, 2012). The author has gone to great lengths to discuss how the government of
the US has evaded moral responsibility for exposing thousands of people to harmful radiations. Using
a combination of research, life history, and archival research, Barker has constructed a compelling
history of the dangers of the testing program from the perspective of the Marshallese people and their
government. Although the US has long ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In total, sixty seven tests were conducted in Marshall Island starting from 1946 until 1958. These tests
resulted in devastating effects on the lives of the people of Marshall Island. The environment was also
affected adversely because of the radiation. In 1979, the US allowed Marshall Island to become a
sovereign nation. However, agreements were signed that allowed the US to continue the island as a
missile site. It can be noted that Marshall Island consists of over ten thousand small islands spread
over a vast area of the ocean. The US forcefully displaced all the people living in some of the islands
to pave the way for the deadly nuclear tests. In one of these tests, the US exploded the most powerful
atomic device in its arsenal. So powerful were most of these tests that the ensuing fireballs could be
seen with the naked eye from hundreds of miles away. The result was a massive destruction and
contamination of the islands in a scale that had never been experienced in any part of the world. Due
to the dangers facing the people of the island as a result of the radiations, various linguistic themes
were developed. These themes primarily focused on the impact of the tests on the people, their
livestock s, ways of life and the environment (Barker, 2012). The fact that a new linguistic system
emerged is sufficient proof that the tests had profound effects on the people. For example, the
radiations caused cancers and led to

Events Between 1870-1945
Bentley first talked about cross cultural interactions as a way to categorize the World s history. He in
addition wrote about the importance of understanding events from a global perspective, not just one
country s point of view. Because of these two fundamental elements to his argument, we can assess
events differently than before hand, finding out ways to take a step back and look at actions as they
affect multiple nations simultaneously. Of these international events from 1870 1945, the Age of
Imperialism, World War I, and the Great Depression had worldwide impacts on economic and social
issues.
Imperialism in the late 19th century became a competition among European countries to take control
of as many areas in Africa before the others ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact, many of the propositions Wilson put forward were not accepted, but the most accepted one
however was the League of Nations, which was meant to secure peace.
The Great Depression not only affected America, but the rest of the world as well. This global
depression began in the United States in 1929 but would soon play an important role in why countries
turned inward to economic independence and lead to the rise of communism. The 1920 s had
Americans living in great prosperity. Consumers ruled the marketplace, buying as much as they could
afford, even spending tomorrow s wages today. Companies were about to face the grim reality that
they were producing more goods than they were able to sell. People simply did not have the money to
buy all these products and everyone instead began to invest their money in the stock market. In
October of 1929, the stock market collapsed in America which soon would lead to the domino effect
in Europe.
Since America no longer had the money they once did, they couldn t afford to continue making loans
to Germany. At the treaty of Versailles, Germany was forced to pay war reparations, but their problem
was that they clearly did not have the money to pay back all these countries for the damages caused in
the war. America then gave loans to the Germans in order to pay both France and England. These two
countries however were in debt to America for their

Kenya Safari Questions And Answers
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)
If you are about to travel to Kenya for the first time, you will probably have all sorts of questions. We
have compiled a list of questions (and answers!) we get asked every day by our guests. If your
question is not listed below please contact (Link) us and we ll get back to you as soon as we can.
Why Should you choose a Kenya Safari? Why travel to Masai Mara?
Kenya has some of Africa s finest national parks, offering one of the best and most accessible game
viewing in the world, including the hard to resist attraction of the Big Five (Link). The country also
offers a breathtaking natural beauty. From the snow capped mountains, white sandy beaches to the
deep Rift Valley with its extinct volcanoes, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For your own safety, do not hang your hand outside the window during the game drive.
What type of language should I take?
When travelling on safari, baggage should be kept to a minimum since you will be using a chartered
aircraft from Nairobi to Masai Mara. This should be in soft duffle bags as opposed to hard suitcases in
order to fit in the baggage compartment on small aircraft. Most internal flights allow a limit up to
15Kg (33 lbs) of luggage. On road safaris, the weight and size allowance is not as important but you
should still try to travel light. Please read your itinerary carefully and pack accordingly. See more
details on our recommended Packing List (Link).
Do mobile/cell phones work on safari?
Yes, there is an extensive mobile (cell) phone service coverage throughout the country. Before
traveling, we suggest you contact your local provider regarding International use of your mobile
device. Since most people come on safari to get away from the outside world, we feel that we must set
some limitations to the use of these phones in our camps and on safari. If you use your phone during
your safari please respect other guests and do not use the phone during game drives or while within
the camp s common areas such as the

Impact Of The Great San Francisco Earthquake
Great San Francisco Earthquake
On April 18, 1906, at 5:12 am over 400 thousand lives were forever changed, due to the San Francisco
Earthquake. The 7.7 7.9 magnitude earthquake only lasted for a minute, however, the impact was
incredible. The earthquake ignited several fires that spread throughout San Francisco and lasted for
three days.
Tectonic plates make up the outermost shell of the Earth and have been moving in relation to each
other for hundreds of millions of years. Two tectonic plates, North American Plate and Pacific Plate,
meet in Western California. The boundary between these plates is a zone of faults. One of these faults
is called the San Andreas fault, which is a transform plate boundary. This means the motion between
the two relative plates is mainly horizontal. At 5:12 am, the Pacific Plate slid horizontally north west
in relation to the North American Plate, causing the earthquake along the San Andreas fault and
associated faults.1 Contemporary geologists were amazed and bewildered with the size of the
horizontal tectonic movements and the large rupture length (477km).2
The San Francisco Earthquake had a highly significant impact on the surrounding environment. The
overwhelming total death count for the earthquake and fires is estimated to be 3 thousand people. In
addition, the earthquake left 250 thousand residents homeless and destroyed 28 thousand building.3
The tremors of the earthquake destroyed San Francisco s water mains, resulting in the

Investigate how PH Affects the Ability of Raw Meat to Absorb Water
I am planning an experiment to investigate how PH affects the ability of raw meat to absorb water.
· Independent Variable
The independent variable for this experiment is the PH of the solution the steak is marinated in. I will
achieve a range of different PH values by using buffers set at PH 1, 3, 5, 7, 9. I predict that there will
be an optimum PH where the steak will absorb the most water.
The amount of water absorbed by the raw meat will increase as you increase the PH up to the
optimum and then decrease the PH as the PH increases past the optimum.
· Dependent Variable
The dependent variable for this experiment is the amount of water absorbed by the diced steak by ...

Instead of calculating the difference in mass, I will calculate percentage change in mass to account for
any small differences in mass.
Also a constant surface area of the diced steak is important, otherwise there would be a larger area for
the solution to act on causing more tenderisation therefore altering the overall results.
The temperature at which the meat is marinated at would need to remain constant. At a higher
temperature, molecules are moving faster therefore osmosis is more likely to occur. The experiment
will be conducted at room temperature, although a more scientific method would be the use of an
incubator. I will conduct the experiment in the same place so that each test is experiencing the same
temperature changes.
The time allowed for marination, each steak should be in the buffer solution for 12 hours all getting
the same length of time otherwise a longer time could provide an opportunity for more water to be
absorbed. Drying of the steak pieces, dab twice on each side. If some are dabbed more than the other it
would alter the end percentage change in mass.
· Method
® Divide the diced steak into five equally sized piles.
® Using electronic scales weigh each pile to make the masses as similar as possible. Record the
masses.
® Add 50ml of buffer solution PH1 to a beaker and repeat the process for the other buffer solutions.
® Put one set of diced steak into each beaker.
® Leave the 5 beakers for 12hours allowing the raw meat to

What Is Mercutio To Blame
Dominic Hanecak Mr. Anderson Period 5 English 1 Honours 9 December 2014 Mercutio: To Blame or
Not to Blame There are many tragedies that happen in our lives today, anyone can look in the media,
on the web, or just look around a neighborhood to find them. In William Shakespeare s, Romeo and
Juliet tragedies happen as well. There are many deaths because of two family s feud. Many people are
responsible for the buildup to the tragedies in the play, however one person seems to be the most
responsible for these deaths, and this person is Mercutio because of his constant pressure and sense of
pride. One of the reasons Mercutio is most responsible for the tragedies in this play is that he is the
one who convinces Romeo to go to the party at the Capulets. This is what started the chain of events
that led up to the deaths of himself, Romeo, Juliet, Tybalt and Mrs. Montague. Mercutio tells Romeo
that he is a lover. Borrow Cupids wings and soar with them above a common bound ... Show more

When Tybalt comes to the square, Mercutio tells Tybalt to pluck your sword out of your pilcher
(3.1.77). Mercutio, out of pity for Romeo, challenges Tybalt to a duel because when Romeo doesn t
fight it taints his pride and his brand as a man. Mercutio is fighting Tybalt, but Romeo doesn t want his
future cousin in law to get hurt so he and benvolio step in to stop the fight. While Mercutio is fighting
Tybalt, Mercutio falls saying I was hurt under your arm (3.1.100 101). This makes Romeo furious, so
mad that he says he is acting on his emotions not on common sense. Out of grief and out of revenge
Romeo slays Tybalt, and when the Prince comes Romeo gets banished. As you can see Mercutio
sacrificing his own life for Romeos pride adds to the tension in between these two families and leads
to the deaths of Romeo, Juliet and

Migration On A Global Scale
Within the last few decades, there has been a great influx of Asians who have migrated to the United
States. In 1985, Asian immigrants made up less than half of the total immigrant population, many of
which have settled in New York City and California. The selective phenomenon known as migration
has been impelled by the demographic, economic, social and psychological attributes of the location
(Desbarats 305). Migration on a global scale is influenced by factors such as available alternatives to
those considering the move, how much distance is covered, ways of transportation and the state
policies, both complex and restrictive, that oversee who enters and leaves.
There are three stages of migration that Thais experienced. The first ... Show more content on

Occupation became the driving force for some; the numbers of professional immigration, however,
were lower than compared to other Asians. Unlike the low rate of workers, there is an increasing
number of Thai youngsters, in keeping with the national tradition of openness to Western influences
(Desbarats 306). It was believed that education through the United States would lead to professional
success. Student visas were only obtained if the student had financial support as well as the incentive
to go back to Thailand usually in the form of financial ties with their home country (Desbarats 307).
Many immigrants found themselves burdened by the conditions of living in the states. The financial
and psychological struggles were not worth it when immigrants were risking to construct networks,
maintain homeland ties and, ensure that remittances reach families left behind (Barkan 19).
Immigrants who stay in the states try to balance assimilation to the dominant American culture while
still want to feel a sense of their homeland. They try to make a connection whether it be through food,
familiar neighbors or the knowledge of language and dance which gets lost in the later generations.
The primary contact with American culture happens through interaction with their American peers
(Tangsujjapoj 3). Social participation is what breaks the way for acculturation of immigrants because
it aids them in establishing their own identity

Failure In The Outliers, Gladwell s The Outliers
Mistake; to make a wrong judgment, an action or decision that is wrong or produces a result that is not
correct or not intended. When we were young our parents always told us, it takes a big person to admit
their mistakes . Contrary to this popular statement, what if you never actually made a mistake in the
first place and fate was at fault for your failure? In his novel The Outliers , Gladwell claims that if you
work hard enough and assert yourself, and use your mind and imagination, you can shape the world to
your desires (Gladwell 151). However, I disagree with this statement because success is rare and no
matter how hard you work, you may never change the world around you. No matter how hard you
work, there will be people that drag you down, circumstances you face, obstacles that stand in your
way, and a world that will refuse to change for you.
Chapter four delves more deeply into the rather tragic life of Chris Langan. He grew up very poor; his
father was an alcoholic and for the most part absent. He was a highly gifted student and ended up
receiving a full scholarship to Reed University. He found the adjustment very difficult, due to the fact
that the teachers had little to no involvement or interest in their students. The odds were stacked
against him despite his hard work and commitment to his education. Through numerous setbacks, he
maintained his rigorous academic passion and excelled at calculus. Nonetheless, the teachers and
school system refused to notice

Pseudoscience Paper
Mega 1
The Impact of Pseudoscience on Consumers Pseudoscience is known by many as false science. Many
consumers are convinced by companies that sells these products provide instant cures that lead to a
healthier lifestyle. These products are scientific theories that have little evidence to back up their
scientific claims. The Internet, health food stores, magazines, and commercials are just a few ways
that companies can target potential consumers to sell their products. Medical information searched by
consumers via the Internet has become the largest source of information worldwide. Consumers search
the Internet for weight loss strategies, treatments for autism, anti aging creams, male enhancement,
and prevention of cancer and heart ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While health foods stores attract consumers to purchase health supplements, many manufacturers use
health food stores to promote their bogus products. In March 1999, the FTC filed a complaint in
federal court against the makers of Vitamin O. The company ran false ads claiming the Vitamin O
supplement prevents cancer, heart, and lung disease by adding an extra oxygen supplement to the
bloodstream. With no scientific evidence to prove the benefits of Vitamin O, the two companies from
Washington agreed to a settlement of $375,000 for consumer compensation. The settlement prohibited
the Vitamin O manufacturers from making claims that were unsupported about the Vitamin O health
benefits. Testimonials and endorsements of product represented through previous experience from
members of the public who used the product were also prohibited in the settlement. In conclusion,
marketing agents with false science beliefs have one common goal: To sell! We as consumers must be
aware and informed of unknown supplements that claims to have a great deal of impact to your life.
These products are known for its testimonials by doctors and actors that make claims of using the
product. Pseudoscience supplements have caused serious illnesses and even death due to consumers
lack of knowledge when purchasing these products. It is strongly recommended that consumers
research the companies and the product that advertise false products very carefully before purchasing
a supplement that claims to

Although Louis Comfort Tiffany s company is best known by the name of Tiffany Studios, his vast creative enterprise operated under various names through the years. ( Tiffany Studios ). Among these names are Tiffany Glass Company, Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company, Allied Arts and the most recognizable, Tiffany Studios. Tiffany wanted to transform and transcend the skills of Medieval stained glass producers. In 1881, Tiffany registered a patent for opalescent window glass. This new treatment was accomplished by combing and manipulating several colors to created a range of hues and dimensional effects. Tiffany believed that this new method allowed for more nature in the medium because it enabled the light to transform the glass rather than painting on the glass. Tiffany believed that nature should be the primary focus of artwork, fitting within the Art Nouveau style. This way of creating the art allowed nature to play a key part in the artwork through light. Tiffany s stained glass windows were displayed in a number of different buildings ranging from chapels, to homes, to even the White House. In addition to his famous stained glass, Tiffany was also known for his Favrile , blown glass vases and bowls. These glass pieces quickly became celebrated worldwide for its iridescence and magnificent colors. Tiffany had a number of his pieces displayed around the world, including being sold in galleries such as Siegried Bing s L Art Nouveau. In the United States Tiffany created a chapel interior for the World s Columbian Exposition of 1893. Visitors entered another world of intricate, reflective glass mosaic surfaces and light filtered through the intense colors of stained glass windows a world that enveloped them and at the same time dwarfed them through its massive architectural forms. • 3. Civil Resistance Movement Essay Another successful civil resistance movement in South East Asia was during the 1980 s in South Korea, this movement was significantly influenced by the peoples power movement during the 1980 s in the Philippines which was also successful. South Korea was also very heavily influenced by religion by a strong catholic ethos throughout the country. The government tried to cleanse the country between 1980 and 1983 to try to silence all democratic activists, many of whom were purged or arrested according to (Lakey, 2009). After 1983, the authoritarian president Chun Doo Hwan was afraid that he may not be re elected due to the hostility he had shown towards the democratic activists, thereafter he released many of these from prison in hope that his wrong doing would be forgotten and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1985, the New Korea Democratic Party became the main opposition in the National Assembly. The leader of this party came back to Korea after two years in exile, facing possible arrest or death, but had two congressional representatives accompanying him for protection. This clearly shows that much like the civil resistance movement in the Philippines, America aided the country in becoming a democracy. South Korea, like the Philippines, built good relations with the United States during and after World War II, this shows that for a peaceful civil resistance to be successful, they must have both powerful religious factors and good alliances with powerful countries. If the powerful countries see a country which they have good alliances with being demeaned by a corrupt government, they often feel the need to intervene and try to come to a peaceful conclusion. South Korea is a predominately influenced by Christianity, therefore, like the Philippines, there seems to be a link between being a religious country and opposing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Woman Warrior Essay A Warrior s Triumph The Woman Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston presents the story of a girl trapped between the cultures of her surrounding environment and that which her mother and family have forced upon her. Knowing only the Chinese way of life, this girl s mother attempts to familiarize her daughter, whom is also the narrator, with the history of their family. The mother shares this heritage through the use of stories in hopes the narrator will be prepared for her ultimate return to China, which is a life completely foreign to her own. In one particular situation, the narrator recalls her mother singing about Fa Mu Lan, the woman warrior. Although her mother expected her daughter to become a wife or a slave, the narrator had a different idea; she would grow up a woman warrior (20). As a young girl, she said that she couldn t tell where the stories left off and the dreams began (19). This is the case in White Tigers. The narrator s dream state takes readers into the mind of a girl who attempts to please her mother and entire family by becoming a woman warrior. This is possibly an attempt to subside much of the harsh ridicule she receives from her mother due to cultural differences. Although this is a key factor in her early childhood, she learns to block out these criticisms as she grows older. There is significant evidence of this growing maturity in Shaman. In the beginning of the chapter, the reader can find an increased pressure placed on the narrator while hearing about her mother s bravery and intelligence at medical school. His goal was to spread the idea of the French Revolution and ultimately expanded France s bountiful pride and glory. The way this was going to happen, according to Napoleon, was through expanding French territory. In order to do this he would need a large army, so that involved enlisting men by conscription. The army was filled with French men, as well as men from Germany and other surrounding areas. Some areas the men passed through they would exploit the common people to get ahold of the necessities they needed. From the beginning Walter was relentless in getting the things that he knew he would need. When he had to requisition food from a village he found a Jewish man, he had to chase after him and finally caught up to him in an attic of a house in which there were many women and children. In Walter s own words he said, I took him, dragged him down the two flights of stairs, and had to hold him by the coat and kick him forward for two hours, threatening him if he should fail to lead me the right village (pg. 6). To retire comfortably, you need income, and this income can come from one of three sources: savings, Social Security, or a company pension plan. The unfortunate fact is that Americans save very little money nowadays, and for anyone under forty, Social Security is a very hollow promise. For most, private pensions are the key to a comfortable retirement. When it comes to private pensions, however, most companies and employees themselves don t contribute enough money, meaning that future retirees will have to work longer if they want to maintain their pre retirement standard of liv¬ing into retirement. There are two types of private pensions in America: the defined benefit pension ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Additionally, the costs of the pensions were also supported by the federal government in the form of company tax deductions for whatever money was set aside for a workers pension plan. Over time, these pension plans for industrial workers became very generous. Everything seemed promising, until foreign competitors with no such pension obligations began to emerge. Many of these foreign companies paid lower wages, but even worse, had products that were just as good as and sometimes better than American manufactured products. When the once strong labor monopoly began to crumble, pensions became a massive and unsustainable cost to most companies, many of which were trying to stay afloat in an extremely competitive global market. Many employees thought that their retirement was secure and agreed to lower wages with the promise of a generous pension plan. Sadly, companies began to trim the fat away in order to survive, and many American s pensions were on the chopping block. There just wasn t enough money in the funds to support them anymore. Millions of Americans were faced with the harsh reality that jobs don t last forever and economic security is not guaranteed. But in all seriousness, following in someone s footsteps is never easy, but the paths that my brother paved for me made it particularly difficult. A story I want to share with you about my dear brother took place about eight years ago. After a night on the tiles, George returned home and went straight to bed. After a short while, he started feeling a little bit nauseous and, in a moment of drunken clarity, opted to vomit out of his bedroom window. This isn t as foolish as it sounds, because the garage roof protruded under George s room. So, rather than stain his carpet and surely be caught in the morning, he hoped the roof and gutter would bear the brunt of the evidence of a very drunk young man until the following day, when it could easily be washed away. A great strategy you may think, but it had a one fatal flaw. • 12. Dealing With Performers and Non-Performers and Performance... Dealing with performers and non performers and performance management Two contradictory theories exist regarding how persons are likely to perform in groups or teams. According to the theory of social loafing, it is far easier to conceal one s laziness in a group setting than in a setting where one s individual output is being measured. A good example of this is in a game of tug o war. When two people are engaged in the match, it is obvious who is the stronger person will be based upon the visible winner, so both people are likely to try very hard to win to avoid social embarrassment. But when there are a large number of people on either side of the rope, people will pull less hard, rationalizing that others will make up for the effort. One solution to the problem of social loafing is to measure individuals working in teams according to individual as well as team output, but this has the disadvantage of creating friction on the team because people will focus on their own, personal efforts to a greater degree than the ultimate team goal and output. To avoid social loafing, make sure everyone in a group knows that they can easily be evaluated by others (Straker, 2012, Social loafing). The opposing theory of group interactions is that of social facilitation, which suggests that in a group setting people will perform at a higher level than they normally would alone, because of the inspiring presence of the group. The physical arousal of the presence of the group, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Obviously this depends on the circumstances, but if the suspects attempts to flee, hide, tries to destroy evidence, gives evasive answers, or perhaps he has a record, or his behavior is suspicious or unusual, then that would be acceptable as well. • 17. Is The Theme Of Power In The Film Out Of Sight By Steven... In the film Out of Sight (Steven Soderbergh, 1998) elements of mise en scene, lighting, editing and characters reveal the themes of identity, love and power. The theme of power directly relates to the economic boom in the United States in the 1990s and the population s strive for success. These themes are brought out through the repetitive use of the color red in the film and are also used to relate back to the title. In relation to other American action films released in 1998, Out of Sight is a very fast faced movie much like the rest of them. The fast paced editing style that Soderbergh utilized in the film relates very much to the race to power that was so prevalent in the 1990s. When the economy started to boom, the people of the country ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After the man who was at the desk in front of Foley leaves the room, Foley s eyes gaze upon the contents of the desk. The camera pans over the red objects on the desk and then stops to rest upon the wrapper of the power bar. Half eaten and half unwrapped, only the red words power are exposed. This is an exceptional shot because it reveals the color red and reveals the word power , which illustrates the fact that the men in Ripley Enterprise have power and Foley does not. In the next shot, the man at the desk enters the room once again holding a suit and Foley turns away from looking at the power bar to blankly staring at the dull colored suit. This suit represents what Foley could become; a regular guy with a regular job of being a security guard but for him this isn t going to cut it. • 19. Symbolism In Pat Conroy s The Water Is Wide Pat Conroy s memoir, The Water is Wide, is about his life on Daufuskie Island, also known as Yamacraw Island in the book. Conroy spent a year teaching on the island in a little two room schoolhouse. The Yamacrawans were rural African American people that by leaving on the island had basically no knowledge of anything beyond the island. Conroy tells of all the troubles he faced while teaching on the island and all the struggles he faced with outside forces. Conroy uses the setting, the title of his book, symbolism, and different themes to express what the year he spent teaching there was like. The setting of the novel is the south, on an island just off the coast of South Carolina. The island is connected to the mainland of South Carolina by a river, and the only way to get on or off the island is by boat. Conroy uses the setting of this book to reveal just how cut off the Yamacrawans are from the real world , and how much this has affected the students he is working with. Conroy states that The twentieth century has basically ignored the presence of Yamacraw (Conroy 3), . The students have no idea what kind of world they are living in, All around the room sat human beings of various sizes and hues who were not aware that a world surrounded them, a world they would be forced to enter, and enter soon (Conroy 37) , and this worries Conroy. The quote analyzes the tragic characters in each play because they must endure pain before, during, and after their downfalls in order to grow. In Oedipus the King, written in 430 B.C, Oedipus has been named the king of Thebes, which is suffering from a plague. Ismene confesses, I did it yes / if only she consents I share the guilt, / the consequences too. (Sophocles, 604 606) This is a misunderstanding because we see Ismene confessing, and Antigone does not want her to die and take blame for a deed that she did not take part in. We see this throughout the play that Ismene has strong family ties, but is not gutsy enough to take part in anything against human law. This also exhibits that Ismene s loyalty only goes so far and is meant to teach the audience to think before you act and stay true to your beliefs. This quote also relates to the role of women in society, how they were meant to stay quiet and not defy men. Antigone goes against this idea because she buries Polynices disregarding the fact that Creon placed a human law against it. Sophocles intended to teach the audience that women were starting to become freer and wanted to make their own decisions, as well as, that it was not uncommon to support your family even if it meant dying for a cause that you believed in. ( Drinking Etiquette, n.d.) Alcohol helps people remove their barriers; lose their inhibitions, and form friendships, relationships, and acts as a social lubricant. In Australia many business deals have been conducted over a drink or two. In addition to the Australian drinking culture, at 18 years old you are legally an adult. Thus, society has many expectations of young adults such as employment and study. Australian policies allow 18 year olds to vote, marry, drive a vehicle, and obtain a gun license; furthermore, it is 18 year olds right as an adult to drink. Eighteen year olds could vote to change government, get married, have children, enter into legally binding contracts and were treated as adults by the justice system, Queensland Premier Anna Bligh said on a matter. He is also widely viewed as the frontrunner for the postseason freshman of the year award, as he ranks No. 1 among Mountain West freshman in points, rebounds, assists and minutes per game. McEwen s high school coach, Curtis Condie, isn t surprised by the attention and success the star freshman has been able to garner so early on in his career, saying it is exactly what he expected from him. Condie, a Utah State graduate, coached McEwen during his senior year where the team achieved a 29 4 record. Overview of the Book What this book provides is a case study about the effects of nuclear radiation on the environment and the people of Marshall Island. Furthermore, the book addresses the various socio economic issues arising from the testing of nuclear weapons by the US in the Pacific island between 1946 and 1958 (Barker, 2012). The author has gone to great lengths to discuss how the government of the US has evaded moral responsibility for exposing thousands of people to harmful radiations. Using a combination of research, life history, and archival research, Barker has constructed a compelling history of the dangers of the testing program from the perspective of the Marshallese people and their government. Although the US has long ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In total, sixty seven tests were conducted in Marshall Island starting from 1946 until 1958. These tests resulted in devastating effects on the lives of the people of Marshall Island. The environment was also affected adversely because of the radiation. In 1979, the US allowed Marshall Island to become a sovereign nation. However, agreements were signed that allowed the US to continue the island as a missile site. It can be noted that Marshall Island consists of over ten thousand small islands spread over a vast area of the ocean. The US forcefully displaced all the people living in some of the islands to pave the way for the deadly nuclear tests. In one of these tests, the US exploded the most powerful atomic device in its arsenal. So powerful were most of these tests that the ensuing fireballs could be seen with the naked eye from hundreds of miles away. The result was a massive destruction and contamination of the islands in a scale that had never been experienced in any part of the world. Due to the dangers facing the people of the island as a result of the radiations, various linguistic themes were developed. These themes primarily focused on the impact of the tests on the people, their livestock s, ways of life and the environment (Barker, 2012). The fact that a new linguistic system emerged is sufficient proof that the tests had profound effects on the people. For example, the radiations caused cancers and led to ... He in addition wrote about the importance of understanding events from a global perspective, not just one country s point of view. Because of these two fundamental elements to his argument, we can assess events differently than before hand, finding out ways to take a step back and look at actions as they affect multiple nations simultaneously. Of these international events from 1870 1945, the Age of Imperialism, World War I, and the Great Depression had worldwide impacts on economic and social issues. In fact, many of the propositions Wilson put forward were not accepted, but the most accepted one however was the League of Nations, which was meant to secure peace. The Great Depression not only affected America, but the rest of the world as well. This global depression began in the United States in 1929 but would soon play an important role in why countries turned inward to economic independence and lead to the rise of communism. The 1920 s had Americans living in great prosperity. Consumers ruled the marketplace, buying as much as they could afford, even spending tomorrow s wages today. Companies were about to face the grim reality that they were producing more goods than they were able to sell. People simply did not have the money to buy all these products and everyone instead began to invest their money in the stock market. In October of 1929, the stock market collapsed in America which soon would lead to the domino effect in Europe. Since America no longer had the money they once did, they couldn t afford to continue making loans to Germany. At the treaty of Versailles, Germany was forced to pay war reparations, but their problem was that they clearly did not have the money to pay back all these countries for the damages caused in the war. America then gave loans to the Germans in order to pay both France and England. These two countries however were in debt to America for their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 43. Impact Of The Great San Francisco Earthquake Great San Francisco Earthquake On April 18, 1906, at 5:12 am over 400 thousand lives were forever changed, due to the San Francisco Earthquake. The 7.7 7.9 magnitude earthquake only lasted for a minute, however, the impact was incredible. The earthquake ignited several fires that spread throughout San Francisco and lasted for three days. Tectonic plates make up the outermost shell of the Earth and have been moving in relation to each other for hundreds of millions of years. Two tectonic plates, North American Plate and Pacific Plate, meet in Western California. The boundary between these plates is a zone of faults. One of these faults is called the San Andreas fault, which is a transform plate boundary. This means the motion between the two relative plates is mainly horizontal. At 5:12 am, the Pacific Plate slid horizontally north west in relation to the North American Plate, causing the earthquake along the San Andreas fault and associated faults.1 Contemporary geologists were amazed and bewildered with the size of the horizontal tectonic movements and the large rupture length (477km).2 The San Francisco Earthquake had a highly significant impact on the surrounding environment. The overwhelming total death count for the earthquake and fires is estimated to be 3 thousand people. In addition, the earthquake left 250 thousand residents homeless and destroyed 28 thousand building.3 The tremors of the earthquake destroyed San Francisco s water mains, resulting in the ... Investigate how PH Affects the Ability of Raw Meat to Absorb Water I am planning an experiment to investigate how PH affects the ability of raw meat to absorb water. · Independent Variable The independent variable for this experiment is the PH of the solution the steak is marinated in. I will achieve a range of different PH values by using buffers set at PH 1, 3, 5, 7, 9. I predict that there will be an optimum PH where the steak will absorb the most water. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Instead of calculating the difference in mass, I will calculate percentage change in mass to account for any small differences in mass. Also a constant surface area of the diced steak is important, otherwise there would be a larger area for the solution to act on causing more tenderisation therefore altering the overall results. The temperature at which the meat is marinated at would need to remain constant. At a higher temperature, molecules are moving faster therefore osmosis is more likely to occur. The experiment will be conducted at room temperature, although a more scientific method would be the use of an incubator. I will conduct the experiment in the same place so that each test is experiencing the same temperature changes. The time allowed for marination, each steak should be in the buffer solution for 12 hours all getting the same length of time otherwise a longer time could provide an opportunity for more water to be absorbed. Drying of the steak pieces, dab twice on each side. If some are dabbed more than the other it would alter the end percentage change in mass. · Method ® Divide the diced steak into five equally sized piles.

What Is Mercutio To Blame Dominic Hanecak Mr. Anderson Period 5 English 1 Honours 9 December 2014 Mercutio: To Blame or Not to Blame There are many tragedies that happen in our lives today, anyone can look in the media, on the web, or just look around a neighborhood to find them. In William Shakespeare s, Romeo and Juliet tragedies happen as well. There are many deaths because of two family s feud. Many people are responsible for the buildup to the tragedies in the play, however one person seems to be the most responsible for these deaths, and this person is Mercutio because of his constant pressure and sense of pride. One of the reasons Mercutio is most responsible for the tragedies in this play is that he is the one who convinces Romeo to go to the party at the Capulets. In 1985, Asian immigrants made up less than half of the total immigrant population, many of which have settled in New York City and California. The selective phenomenon known as migration has been impelled by the demographic, economic, social and psychological attributes of the location (Desbarats 305). Unlike the low rate of workers, there is an increasing number of Thai youngsters, in keeping with the national tradition of openness to Western influences (Desbarats 306). It was believed that education through the United States would lead to professional success. Student visas were only obtained if the student had financial support as well as the incentive to go back to Thailand usually in the form of financial ties with their home country (Desbarats 307). Many immigrants found themselves burdened by the conditions of living in the states. The financial and psychological struggles were not worth it when immigrants were risking to construct networks, maintain homeland ties and, ensure that remittances reach families left behind (Barkan 19). Immigrants who stay in the states try to balance assimilation to the dominant American culture while still want to feel a sense of their homeland. They try to make a connection whether it be through food, familiar neighbors or the knowledge of language and dance which gets lost in the later generations. When we were young our parents always told us, it takes a big person to admit their mistakes . Contrary to this popular statement, what if you never actually made a mistake in the first place and fate was at fault for your failure? In his novel The Outliers , Gladwell claims that if you work hard enough and assert yourself, and use your mind and imagination, you can shape the world to your desires (Gladwell 151). However, I disagree with this statement because success is rare and no matter how hard you work, you may never change the world around you. No matter how hard you work, there will be people that drag you down, circumstances you face, obstacles that stand in your way, and a world that will refuse to change for you.
