Cullimore Vs Johnson Case
Amie Cullimore, a medical practitioner, filed a child support claim against Michael Ranson, who more
than two decades ago donated his sperm to Amie Cullimore, who subsequently conceived two
children. Cullimore alleges that throughout the years, Ranson has assumed the role of loco parentis,
which means that Ranson has stood in the place of the parent throughout the years. Ranson filed a
response that Bill 28, also known as, All Families Are Equal Act, which extinguishes Cullimore`s
claim based on the assertion that the surrogate parents who lack an intention to be parents cannot be
considered parents in law.

Women and Sexuality in Aphra Behn s Poems Essay
Women and Sexuality in Aphra Behn s Poems
All women together ought to let flowers fall upon the tomb of AphraBehn, . .
. for it was she who earned them the right to speak their minds. (Woolf 91)
Born in 1640, AphraBehn broke gender stereotypes when she undertook a thrilling
(if unrewarded) life as a spy for the Crown, but it was her scandalous career as
an author which truly achieved many firsts for women. She was the first woman to
supporthereself financially by solely relying on the profession of writing, and
many readers argue that Oroonoko her passionate tale about the institution of
slavery was the first English novel. She was certainly one of the first female
authors ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Likewise pursued, in The Disappointment, Behn s young
virginal maiden takes her sexual destiny into her own hands (literally), leaving
her would be lover impotent, an outcast from what used to be his realm of power.
Thus in The Willing Mistress and The Disappointment, Behn confers power to
women by creating an environment of sexual freedom in which female sexuality is
natural, strong, comfortable, and driven by pure desire.
In the Middle Ages, if a woman wanted to express herself in writing, she was
limited to expressions of religious faith, as were Julian of Norwich and Margery
Kempe. Any rapture described in the literature of this period was usually
reserved for Christ, prompted by the ecstatic realization of an eternal life. In
the 16th and 17th centuries, women writers were still largely limited in how
they were permitted to express themselves. While writing about love became more
socially acceptable, most examples still presented a romanticized perspective in
which passion was inextricably linked to emotional involvement. There are
glimpses of sexuality, such as when Anne Bradstreet in A Letter to Her Husband,
Absent Upon Public Employment refers to her children as those fruits which
through [her husband s] heat I bore and yearns for him to return and warm her
chilled limbs (Lines 14; 11). However, even this

The Rhetorical Analysis Of Ursula Kroebed Commencement...
Women have been fighting for their rights since July 13, 1848. A lot has changed for women since
then but in some parts of the world they are still being held lower than men. In some companies
women are denied certain jobs due to their gender, and they receive lower pay than a man would in the
same job position. Ursula Kroeber Le Guin wanted to highlight that in A Left handed commencement
Address, where she points out that the world revolves around men and yet she proves that women are
actually equal to men. Le Guin supports this with allusions, rhetorical questions, parallel structure and
a hopeless and later hopeful tone. She urges women to stop adjusting themselves for the rule of men
and rather follow their own rules and create an environment where they live with men rather than
under men. Le Guin addresses both men and women, especially the women who struggle with failure.
She makes an optimistic, welcoming environment for them that hopefully motivates them to fight for
their freedom and equality. This commencement address has a very heavy parallel structure. In the
second paragraph Le Guin emphasizes, ...I hope for you is first, if only if you want kids, I hope you
have them...I hope they re beautiful. I hope you and they have enough to eat... This is where her
purpose starts to show and where she can connect to her audience. She could have blatantly stated
how she wants one to have a positive future but instead she paints a picture of what can happen and

The Mathematics Of Mathematics Into Mathematics Education
Mathematics is a versatile and always changing subject as people research and theorize new ideas.
Calvin Clawson proclaimed that the single most compelling reason to explore the world of
mathematics is that it is beautiful, and pondering its intriguing ideas is great fun (2). To make this
subject easier to explore, teachers should be implementing the history of mathematics into
mathematics education. They should do so because of the numerous benefits that it would yield to
students and teachers. Po Hung Liu stated that integrating history of mathematics into daily lessons
and such will help students and teachers by increasing the students motivation to learn, help them to

This issue is not contained exclusively in the United States education system; it is a worldwide
problem that has effects on people all around the world. Implementing the history of mathematics into
all mathematics education will save millions of students from loathing mathematics without really
knowing what mathematics is truly about or where it came from.
Involving the history of mathematics in schools would prove to very beneficial, but there are not many
teachers today that are very well enlightened on the history of mathematics and how the
implementation of said topic can be beneficial. We cannot expect those teachers to be able to teach our
students about an area of mathematics that they have no to little knowledge in. A study by Danielle
Goodwin made a very interesting and relevant conclusion:
There are significant relationships between what California high school public teachers know about
mathematics history and their beliefs about mathematics. Teachers with lower history scores are less
likely to believe that mathematics is a discipline for everyone and that mathematics shows cultural
differences. Teachers with low mathematics history scores are more likely to believe that mathematics
is a disjointed collection of facts, rules, and skills, and that everything important about mathematics is
already known (87).
Having this kind of mindset as a teacher can be very detrimental to a student as it will discourage them

Economic Value Of The Good Life
The difference between back then and the society we live in today, is that there are now many things
that money can actually buy. By exploring the Good Life, the topic of economic value comes to mind
and the question that permeates is if that thing should or should not have an economic value. It is
crazy to think about some of the things that people charge others that do not have any real
significance. For instance, Michael Sandel pointed how in some cities, non violent offenders can pay
ninety dollars a night for a prison cell upgrade. That is an example to me that seems very pointless
because if a person is a criminal why should his or hers economic status put them to a greater
advantage than anybody else in that prison. Drawing from the content from this week s readings I
believe that certain things should contain more economic value than other. For instance things like the
internet, adoptions, health care, education, and parking are things to me that have economic value, but
really shouldn t. On the contrary, things that should have economic value are things like the
preservation of the environment, museums, and recreational and national parks.
Things that I believe should not have such an economic value are things that to me seem essential to
an individual s life. One thing that has monetary value and really shouldn t in my opinion is wifi.
Paying for wifi is something that gets me furious because I truly believe that there should be free wifi

Political and Religious Motivations in Dante Alighieri’s...
I: Introduction For many years Dante Alighieri s epic poem the Divine Comedia has been known as a
work born from his religious perspective and internal conflict of faith. Many have suggested that he
wrote the text to share his perspective of Christianity with the world. However, beyond religious
implications, Dante sought just as equally, if not more so, to share his political philosophy and the
agony inspired by some of the political occurrences in his life with the world. It is important, then, to
consider the following question: to what extent is Dante s Inferno a politically motivated text rather
than a religious one? Alighieri s epic, particularly Inferno, is not solely a religious text, as it has been
thought of by so many for so many years, but rather is an allegorical political text. This can be seen
most clearly in the first three cantos of the Inferno, though it is also present in the rest of the poem.
The first three cantos will be the most focused upon here, supplemented with substance from the next
seven as well. As one of the most influential works of literature ever written, arguably the most
influential religious works ever written (aside from religious foundational texts such as the Bible and
the Qur an), and one of the most widely known epics ever written, it is necessary that the world strives
to gain a complete understanding of what the author s true purpose is, and thus what the true intended
contribution of the work is as well. As one of the six

Human Culture And Its Impact On The World
Introduction
Humans are one of the smartest creatures to walk on the face of the earth, and we have shaped society
in many different ways for many different cultures. From the beginning of the first civilization till
today, humans have had one common goal: how to make things better, and how to become more
efficient as well as more productive. Every revolution that took place in human history, it brought
drastic change to ways of living and of course mostly for good reasons. From the era when the wheel
was first introduced to the era when the light bulb was invented, we will agree that today s human is
by far the most advanced human in the history of mankind, and it will only get more advanced.
Business has always been a part of human culture, but overtime, doing business has become more and
more competitive. Network is crucial to business world, as doing business has become more and more
global, in order for business to stay competitive and have edge over their competitor business or any
idea has to be global. Everyday there is someone who comes out with a new idea, but most ideas don t
make it up to the level where they become part of a human life and existence. In today s world, social
media has become a part of human life and business world. Doing business anywhere in the world has
never been this easy, and staying in touch with your friends and family across the globe never felt this
close. Social networks like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest and YouTube

Strengths And Weaknesses Of The American Banking System
The American System The American Banking system has always focused on order, resiliency and the
ability to withstand the storm. When comparing banking systems, it is required analyze both the
strengths and the weaknesses of each system. While examining the American banking system, a key
strength that is presented is the pride if its resiliency, these improvements in the resiliency of the
banking system have been reinforced by a series of key capital and liquidity rules that have been
enacted in the United States, including the Basel III capital and liquidity frameworks as adopted in
more stringent form (The State of American Banking).
This focus on resiliency also included stress tests that the American banks undergo to determine their
ability to deal with things such as, a sudden jump in the unemployment rate of 4 percentage points, or,
a sudden decrease in GDP of more than 6 percentage points, and an abrupt rise in the BBB corporate
bond spread (The State of American Banking). Through these stress tests, it can be concluded whether
or not the individual banks are making the correct decisions in the challenging financial
circumstances, or whether the government needs to step in and alter legislations or practices.
To examine how the stress tests are regulated the process has remained largely unchanged since the
1930 s. As still, in the United States, depending on the charter type, four federal agencies, as well as
state agencies, oversee banking and thrift

Background The worship of white complexion and projection of the ideal beauty as fair skinned is not
a new concept if we try to track it down he history lane. In fact, this concept has engrained in our
physc by our culture from the ancient times. The Varna system of Social classification When Aryans
(natives of Arctic and hence fair skinned) invaded the Indus Valley, they drove the darker skinned
inhabitants down south. The ones who remained were called as das and made to do subjugated jobs as
labourers, cleaners and even undertakers. Hence in the social classification, they were allotted the
lowest rung. As time progressed and with continuous labour in the sun, the das came to be associated
with dark colour and simultaneously fair colour started to be associated with affluence and aristocracy.
Hence, the social classification, the caste system was very aptly called as the Varna system, Varna

The Impact Of The Age Of Enlightenment In Western Europe
The Age of Enlightenment saw many great changes in Western Europe. It was an age of reason and
philosophes. During this age, changes the likes of which had not been seen since ancient times took
place. Such change affected evert pore of Western European society. Many might argue that the
Enlightenment really did not bring any real change, however, there exists and overwhelming amount
of facts which prove, without question, that the spirit of the Enlightenment was one of change
specifically change which went against the previous teachings of the Catholic Church. Such change is
apparent in the ideas, questions, and philosophies of the time, in the study of science, and throughout
the monarchial system. Previously, the Catholic Church had professed to the entire medieval world
that faith in God was absolute. Indeed, the medieval world was truly an age of faith. As such, ideas
that went against the teachings of God were ignored and their preachers subsequently murdered. After
the Crusades brought back old Aristotelian learning from the middle east, all this changed. Advances
in Geography were made with the introduction of Ptolemaic Geography. More importantly than the
rediscovery of ancient geography was the beginning of skepticism in Western Europe. No longer
would the Church s word be taken on faith. The idea that the physical world could be understood
through the use of empiricism analytical thought was also introduced. René Descartes even began to

Narrative Essay About A Cake House
If the lights are off, everything looks perfect. You can t see the cracked chess pieces and torn
tapestries, yellowing stained glass windows and rotting windowpanes. All you can see is the false
beauty of the room, filled to the top with broken luxuries. When I was younger, bug eyed and naive, I
only saw Marie s white birthday cake house and color TV. She had a little dog that followed after her,
and lay down at our feet as I tried to hide my worn shoes and the slowly unraveling hem of my dress.
Marie s mother sang like a dove and had perfect white skin and red lips. She called everyone darling
and dear except me, but I didn t blame her. My parents weren t like Marie s parents. There were tulips
growing in Marie s backyard, for God s sake. My family didn t even have a backyard. We had a
dangerous balcony with cracked concrete. My parents swept streets for a living. We didn t make rent

clear voice full of endless patience. Street sweeping was back breaking work. It was stroke after stroke
after stroke, slowly making your way down the street. The sun beat down on you, burning your skin
and heating the metal handle of your broom. But you couldn t give up. You had to keep going until
you reached the end of the street. Then you started all over. Sixty years had burned the anger out of

Describing Dunkirk
Describing Dunkirk From what I have learned about Dunkirk, it is possible to say that it could have
been seen as a victory and also a defeat for the British. When the Second World War first began in
September 1939 Germany had started to invade Poland and as a result of this France and Britain
joined in an alliance and declared war on Germany. By the 10th May 1940 Germany had begun their
invasion of France using the Blitzkrieg Method. On the 20th May Germany had reached the coast and

was given on the most successful day of the evacuation, when 47,081 troops were brought to safety.
This source is quite reliable as the message is written at the time of the evacuation. The source also
shows Churchill excepting an element of defeat, however it doesn t tell us about the other days of
evacuation. As well as these sources there are also other sources that confirm the theory of Dunkirk
being panicked and disorderly. They are written by a British pilot shot down near Dunkirk, a German
fighter pilots account of Dunkirk, Charles Lightoller a retired sailor and a painting by Charles Cundall
an official war artist. As we can see there are quite a few sources that support this theory. Another
aspect of defeat is the loss of troops and equipment. The BEF had lost and left behind virtually all of
its equipment. It had been forced to abandon 2,472 guns, 90,000 rifles, 63,879 vehicle, 20,548
motorcycles and over 500,000 tons of stores and ammunition. More importantly 68,000 troops did not

troops were still not safe from air attack, mines or submarines many ships and boats were sunk or

this semester was during presidential election cycle, the client was happy to have our assistance with
helping promote the club. During this semester, many challenges occurred that both the club and our
group faced; however, we were able to accomplish the goals that the client wanted to accomplish from
our project.
Goal and Organization at Initial Development of Project
At the beginning of the semester, our group spoke with the client to develop several goals that they
wanted our group to achieve throughout this semester. After speaking to the Vice Chairman John
Wood (2016), one of the main tasks that he wanted our group to assist the club with accomplishing

The Death of the Moth by Virginia Woolf Essay
The Death of the Moth by Virginia Woolf The Death of the Moth, written by Virginia Woolf, explains
the brief life of a moth corresponding with the true nature of life and death. In this essay, Woolf puts
the moth in a role that represents life. Woolf makes comparisons of the life outside to the life of the
moth. The theme is the mystery of death and the correspondence of the life of the moth with the true
nature of life. The images created by Woolf are presented that appeal to the eye. For instance, the moth
s body during the death is appealing to the eye. The image makes the reader more interested. The
essence of true life is energy. As Woolf describes, I could fancy that a thread of vital light became
visible. He was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Then, as the essay continues, Woolf begins to be more interested and starts to feel a sense of pity or
sympathy for the moth. As described here, Watching him, it seemed as if a fibre, very thin and pure, of
the enormous energy of the world had been thrust into his frail and diminutive body (426 427). This
sentence shows Woolfs attitude starting to change towards the moth. In the beginning of the essay,
Woolf does not show the interest like she does towards the end of the essay. When the moth starts to
go through death the tone changes dramatically and Woolf is a state of wonder and awe for the moth.
When the moth is dying Woolf uses lengthier sentences to bring out the importance of the situation:
One could only watch the extraordinary efforts made by those tiny legs against an oncoming doom
which could, had it chosen, have submerged an entire city, not merely a city, but masses of human
beings; nothing, I knew, had any chance against death. (428)
The lengthier sentences also help to explain the wonder and awe that Woolf expresses towards the
moth. The wonder and awe that she expressed was due to the power and inevitability of the death.
Woolf was in awe that death is inevitable and that she could not do anything about it. The next stylistic
device is personification. By definition personification is to think of or represent as having human
qualities or life. Woolf applies this device to

Columbus Day Pros And Cons
In modern day society, we often overlook key points in history. For example, Columbus Day, why do
we celebrate it? Well, from one s point of view, we celebrate this holiday for several reasons, one of
these reasons are because it recalls Christopher Columbus entry to the Americas on October 12, 1492.
This occasion is questionable on the grounds that the European settlement in the Americas prompted
the downfall of the history and culture, of the indigenous people groups. What are some of the pros
and cons from naming Columbus Day to Indigenous Day? That is what you will learn in this essay. To
start off, Indigenous People s Day, or Columbus Day, Which do you prefer? First off, why is it called
Columbus Day ? Well, as stated earlier, it was named after Christopher Columbus, who as we believe
today, discovered America. Many believe that it was him who founded the Americas, but really there
could ve been earlier settlers or even Native Americans who lived on those territories before
Columbus made his way there. What is a pro of having this day named after Columbus? A source I
found called www.scholastic.com stated, The holiday honoring Christopher Columbus s sighting of
America on October 12, 1492, is observed in the states of the United States and also in parts of
Canada, in Puerto Rico, and in some cities in Italy and Spain. Although Columbus was not the first
explorer to set foot in the Western Hemisphere, his landing at San Salvador Island in what is now the
Bahamas was very important. It opened the way for the settlement of America by Europeans. So,
basically we named this holiday after Columbus because it was assumed that he was one of the first to
see and discover the Americas. Another source titled www.osia.org stated Columbus Day celebrates
the beginning of cultural exchange between America and Europe. After Columbus, came millions of
European immigrants who brought their art, music, science, medicine, philosophy and religious
principles to America. From one s point of view, it may look like Columbus did many great things that
led to the development of America. But no one really knows what was at stake because of Columbus
decisions. A con relating to the naming of Columbus Day is in a

Adherence To Asthma
As I jogged in early February, my chest tightened and I felt like each breath I took was more and more
painful. It was happening, an asthma attack. The cold had made my breathing almost impossible and
each step I took felt worse and worse. My asthma had always affected me since I was a child but now
as an adult I felt like everywhere I went I had to carry around my Ventolin, which didn t make me feel
socially accepted. When others were running in the cold, I felt left behind, needing to rely on a device
in order to breathe. This feeling of incompetence and rejection is felt by those affected by this chronic
illness. Asthma is defined by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute as a chronic disease that

Statistically, 30 70 percent of asthmatic patients do not adhere to the medication they are prescribed
(Bailey and Apter, 2015). Symptoms become worse and a patient s overall quality of life is also
hindered. Bailey and Apter (2015) explain that many patients do not adhere to their medication
because they are not educated on how to utilize the medication, costs of the medication are too high,
the presence of negative side effects, and even sociocultural factors, among various others.
Nonadherence also causes problems in healthcare economics as with more emergency visits due to
sudden asthma attacks, healthcare costs rocket making it harder for patients to pay and causing overall
economic problems. With the existence of these factors, adherence becomes extremely difficult for
adults and consequently their health is put at risk. Negative symptomology such as increased asthma

Stages Of Attachment Of The Infant s Attachment
Stages of attachment. Another of Bowlby s contributions is his proposal that the infant s attachment to
caregiver develops in stages attuned to the infant s cognitive and emotional development. As described
by Broderick Blewitt (2015), a bond emerges from the affect between mother and child in the first two
months as the infant signals their needs by clinging, smiling, and crying. During this stage infants are
not yet attached to anyone and do not discriminate between caregivers. Between their second and
eighth month, infants become increasingly preferential of one caregiver, most often the mother. The
primary indicator of the emerging attachment is whether or not the 7 8 month old infant protests when
separated from their caregiver, and whether they greet the caregivers return with happiness. Soon
thereafter, the infant should begin to develop additional attachments with their fathers, grandparents,
babysitters etc. By 18 months most infants are attached to multiple caregivers (Broderick Blewitt,
2015, p. 135).
Attachment is a system. As mentioned previously, Bowlby also argued that attachment is a system.
Expanding on this, Bowlby proposed that the system serves three purposes; 1) It maintains proximity
between infant and caregiver, nurturing the emotional bond In attachment theory this is known as
proximity maintenance, 2) It provides the potential for on going protection known as a secure base, 3)
It creates a haven for the infant when distressed

Jackson, Mississippi during the early 1960 s. The book addresses the inequalities African Americans
continued to face even after the abolition of slavery. The story is about having a voice, and is written
in the perspective of three women: Aibileen and Minny, household maids, and Skeeter Phelan, a

events between characters that revealed just how deep the roots of racism were in Mississippi. A major

Gerhard Richer (1932~) is a German artist who is unique for not conforming to a particular movement

paint a traditional realist art style in early years under the oppressive East German communist regime,
banned from exposure to American Pop art and other contemporary art (1). Thus he often explored
figurative expression or representation of subjects, until his exposure to abstract art in West Germany

There are a couple of elements that set his painting apart from Friedrich s; that it has a surrealist
element, and that Richter values the characteristics of modern art, meaning that the artwork does not
focus on how to most imitate a subject most faithfully ( realistically ) but to capture the essence of it.
The surrealist element in particular is significant when placed side by side with the traditional style of
landscape painting, because his choice not to completely disassociate it with the orthodox is what
allows it to emphasize the surreality of the piece (4). It is also set apart from romantic paintings by
nature s indifference . The artwork has a lack of sympathy for the viewer s search for something to

discomfiting element and the inhuman detachment of Sea Sea

Frankenstein s Dark Elements
Starting in the late eighteenth century, gothic literature rapidly expanded to become a major genre of
study. There are many key elements that make a piece of literature gothic, many of these elements are
found in Frankenstein. Three of the main elements that categorize gothic literature are extreme
landscapes, supernatural manifestations, and intense emotions; these three elements can also be found
in Frankenstein.
One common element of gothic literature includes extreme landscapes. Gothic literature uses this key
element to explore and emphasize the isolation these characters desire or face. Through the emphasis
on isolation, books take on an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So, while the location is an element of gothic literature, so is the reason for traveling to that location.
The landscape of the summit of Montanvert is the place where Victor Frankenstein runs into the
Creature, and the Creature begins to tell his tale. This is the first time in the novel the reader starts to
connect with the Creature, a supernatural being.
Supernatural manifestations are a must for gothic literature. These inventions of the mind tend to
attract readers, setting this genre apart from all others. Supernatural manifestations make the ordinary
seem not so ordinary, which helps add to the overall mystery and suspense of a novel. Gothic literature
aims to create the feelings of suspense, gloom, isolation, and thrill; or simply emotions in general. The
prime example in Frankenstein comes from Victor Frankenstein s invention of the Creature. The
Creature can be described as essentially a functioning monster, pieced together by various parts to
make it work like a human body would. In the time the novel was written, nothing like this had ever
been accomplished, whereas in current times, the Creature might not classify as a supernatural
manifestation. The idea for the Creature comes from Victor Frankenstein s love for the field of
alchemy. Alchemist study the transformation of matter in the days prior to chemistry. This field
intrigued Victor Frankenstein at an early age; therefore, early on in his life he learned and

A Brief Note On Creators And Victims Of Children
There is a distinction between Creators and Victims. Creators are ambitious and let nothing stop them.
Victims, on the other hand, let small barriers make big impacts on their lives and from there they give
up. Although my family and I all grew up with similar resources, we all turned out different. My
cousins, sister, and I all had parents that were not involved in our lives because our parents were, and
still are, substance abusers. My sister and some of my cousins let their parents absence impact their
future. In contrast, I decided I was going to make my own fate; I was not going to let their absence
affect me. As a result, I am a Creator. In contrast, my sister and cousins are Victims, and it is clear to
see how the roles play out. Victims and Creators handle individual responsibility different, in areas
such as negative emotions, financial matters, and career/future plans.
Victims do not like to take individual responsibility. Likewise, they do not process negative emotions
well either. Instead they find someone or something to blame for their life problems. For example, my
cousin Jacob, the issue with him is he does not take responsibility for anything. Also, he lets his
negative emotions out on other people. When Jacob lost his first job, he immediately blamed my
grandmother. Claiming it was my grandmother s fault for not letting him use her car enough. In that
situation, Jacob is making excuses, he is denying his responsibilities. Jacob could have used the bus

  • 3. Women and Sexuality in Aphra Behn s Poems Essay Women and Sexuality in Aphra Behn s Poems All women together ought to let flowers fall upon the tomb of AphraBehn, . . . for it was she who earned them the right to speak their minds. (Woolf 91) Born in 1640, AphraBehn broke gender stereotypes when she undertook a thrilling (if unrewarded) life as a spy for the Crown, but it was her scandalous career as an author which truly achieved many firsts for women. She was the first woman to supporthereself financially by solely relying on the profession of writing, and many readers argue that Oroonoko her passionate tale about the institution of slavery was the first English novel. She was certainly one of the first female authors ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Likewise pursued, in The Disappointment, Behn s young virginal maiden takes her sexual destiny into her own hands (literally), leaving her would be lover impotent, an outcast from what used to be his realm of power. Thus in The Willing Mistress and The Disappointment, Behn confers power to women by creating an environment of sexual freedom in which female sexuality is natural, strong, comfortable, and driven by pure desire. In the Middle Ages, if a woman wanted to express herself in writing, she was limited to expressions of religious faith, as were Julian of Norwich and Margery Kempe. Any rapture described in the literature of this period was usually reserved for Christ, prompted by the ecstatic realization of an eternal life. In
  • 4. the 16th and 17th centuries, women writers were still largely limited in how they were permitted to express themselves. While writing about love became more socially acceptable, most examples still presented a romanticized perspective in which passion was inextricably linked to emotional involvement. There are glimpses of sexuality, such as when Anne Bradstreet in A Letter to Her Husband, Absent Upon Public Employment refers to her children as those fruits which through [her husband s] heat I bore and yearns for him to return and warm her chilled limbs (Lines 14; 11). However, even this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Rhetorical Analysis Of Ursula Kroebed Commencement... Women have been fighting for their rights since July 13, 1848. A lot has changed for women since then but in some parts of the world they are still being held lower than men. In some companies women are denied certain jobs due to their gender, and they receive lower pay than a man would in the same job position. Ursula Kroeber Le Guin wanted to highlight that in A Left handed commencement Address, where she points out that the world revolves around men and yet she proves that women are actually equal to men. Le Guin supports this with allusions, rhetorical questions, parallel structure and a hopeless and later hopeful tone. She urges women to stop adjusting themselves for the rule of men and rather follow their own rules and create an environment where they live with men rather than under men. Le Guin addresses both men and women, especially the women who struggle with failure. She makes an optimistic, welcoming environment for them that hopefully motivates them to fight for their freedom and equality. This commencement address has a very heavy parallel structure. In the second paragraph Le Guin emphasizes, ...I hope for you is first, if only if you want kids, I hope you have them...I hope they re beautiful. I hope you and they have enough to eat... This is where her purpose starts to show and where she can connect to her audience. She could have blatantly stated how she wants one to have a positive future but instead she paints a picture of what can happen and how ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Calvin Clawson proclaimed that the single most compelling reason to explore the world of mathematics is that it is beautiful, and pondering its intriguing ideas is great fun (2). Implementing the history of mathematics into all mathematics education will save millions of students from loathing mathematics without really knowing what mathematics is truly about or where it came from. Involving the history of mathematics in schools would prove to very beneficial, but there are not many teachers today that are very well enlightened on the history of mathematics and how the implementation of said topic can be beneficial. We cannot expect those teachers to be able to teach our students about an area of mathematics that they have no to little knowledge in. A study by Danielle Goodwin made a very interesting and relevant conclusion: There are significant relationships between what California high school public teachers know about mathematics history and their beliefs about mathematics. Teachers with lower history scores are less likely to believe that mathematics is a discipline for everyone and that mathematics shows cultural differences. Teachers with low mathematics history scores are more likely to believe that mathematics is a disjointed collection of facts, rules, and skills, and that everything important about mathematics is already known (87). • 10. Economic Value Of The Good Life The difference between back then and the society we live in today, is that there are now many things that money can actually buy. By exploring the Good Life, the topic of economic value comes to mind and the question that permeates is if that thing should or should not have an economic value. It is crazy to think about some of the things that people charge others that do not have any real significance. For instance, Michael Sandel pointed how in some cities, non violent offenders can pay ninety dollars a night for a prison cell upgrade. That is an example to me that seems very pointless because if a person is a criminal why should his or hers economic status put them to a greater advantage than anybody else in that prison. Drawing from the content from this week s readings I believe that certain things should contain more economic value than other. For instance things like the internet, adoptions, health care, education, and parking are things to me that have economic value, but really shouldn t. On the contrary, things that should have economic value are things like the preservation of the environment, museums, and recreational and national parks. Things that I believe should not have such an economic value are things that to me seem essential to an individual s life. One thing that has monetary value and really shouldn t in my opinion is wifi. Paying for wifi is something that gets me furious because I truly believe that there should be free wifi anywhere you go. • 12. Political and Religious Motivations in Dante Alighieri’s... I: Introduction For many years Dante Alighieri s epic poem the Divine Comedia has been known as a work born from his religious perspective and internal conflict of faith. Many have suggested that he wrote the text to share his perspective of Christianity with the world. However, beyond religious implications, Dante sought just as equally, if not more so, to share his political philosophy and the agony inspired by some of the political occurrences in his life with the world. It is important, then, to consider the following question: to what extent is Dante s Inferno a politically motivated text rather than a religious one? Alighieri s epic, particularly Inferno, is not solely a religious text, as it has been thought of by so many for so many years, but rather is an allegorical political text. This can be seen most clearly in the first three cantos of the Inferno, though it is also present in the rest of the poem. The first three cantos will be the most focused upon here, supplemented with substance from the next seven as well. As one of the most influential works of literature ever written, arguably the most influential religious works ever written (aside from religious foundational texts such as the Bible and the Qur an), and one of the most widely known epics ever written, it is necessary that the world strives to gain a complete understanding of what the author s true purpose is, and thus what the true intended contribution of the work is as well. When comparing banking systems, it is required analyze both the strengths and the weaknesses of each system. While examining the American banking system, a key strength that is presented is the pride if its resiliency, these improvements in the resiliency of the banking system have been reinforced by a series of key capital and liquidity rules that have been enacted in the United States, including the Basel III capital and liquidity frameworks as adopted in more stringent form (The State of American Banking). This focus on resiliency also included stress tests that the American banks undergo to determine their ability to deal with things such as, a sudden jump in the unemployment rate of 4 percentage points, or, a sudden decrease in GDP of more than 6 percentage points, and an abrupt rise in the BBB corporate bond spread (The State of American Banking). Through these stress tests, it can be concluded whether or not the individual banks are making the correct decisions in the challenging financial circumstances, or whether the government needs to step in and alter legislations or practices. To examine how the stress tests are regulated the process has remained largely unchanged since the 1930 s. The Varna system of Social classification When Aryans (natives of Arctic and hence fair skinned) invaded the Indus Valley, they drove the darker skinned inhabitants down south. During this age, changes the likes of which had not been seen since ancient times took place. Such change affected evert pore of Western European society. Many might argue that the Enlightenment really did not bring any real change, however, there exists and overwhelming amount of facts which prove, without question, that the spirit of the Enlightenment was one of change specifically change which went against the previous teachings of the Catholic Church. Such change is apparent in the ideas, questions, and philosophies of the time, in the study of science, and throughout the monarchial system. Previously, the Catholic Church had professed to the entire medieval world that faith in God was absolute. Indeed, the medieval world was truly an age of faith. As such, ideas that went against the teachings of God were ignored and their preachers subsequently murdered. After the Crusades brought back old Aristotelian learning from the middle east, all this changed. Advances in Geography were made with the introduction of Ptolemaic Geography. More importantly than the rediscovery of ancient geography was the beginning of skepticism in Western Europe. No longer would the Church s word be taken on faith. This sentence shows Woolfs attitude starting to change towards the moth. In the beginning of the essay, Woolf does not show the interest like she does towards the end of the essay. When the moth starts to go through death the tone changes dramatically and Woolf is a state of wonder and awe for the moth. When the moth is dying Woolf uses lengthier sentences to bring out the importance of the situation: One could only watch the extraordinary efforts made by those tiny legs against an oncoming doom which could, had it chosen, have submerged an entire city, not merely a city, but masses of human beings; nothing, I knew, had any chance against death. • 27. Columbus Day Pros And Cons In modern day society, we often overlook key points in history. For example, Columbus Day, why do we celebrate it? Well, from one s point of view, we celebrate this holiday for several reasons, one of these reasons are because it recalls Christopher Columbus entry to the Americas on October 12, 1492. This occasion is questionable on the grounds that the European settlement in the Americas prompted the downfall of the history and culture, of the indigenous people groups. What are some of the pros and cons from naming Columbus Day to Indigenous Day? That is what you will learn in this essay. To start off, Indigenous People s Day, or Columbus Day, Which do you prefer? First off, why is it called Columbus Day ? Well, as stated earlier, it was named after Christopher Columbus, who as we believe today, discovered America. Many believe that it was him who founded the Americas, but really there could ve been earlier settlers or even Native Americans who lived on those territories before Columbus made his way there. What is a pro of having this day named after Columbus? A source I found called www.scholastic.com stated, The holiday honoring Christopher Columbus s sighting of America on October 12, 1492, is observed in the states of the United States and also in parts of Canada, in Puerto Rico, and in some cities in Italy and Spain. Although Columbus was not the first explorer to set foot in the Western Hemisphere, his landing at San Salvador Island in what is now the Bahamas was very important. It opened the way for the settlement of America by Europeans. So, basically we named this holiday after Columbus because it was assumed that he was one of the first to see and discover the Americas. Another source titled www.osia.org stated Columbus Day celebrates the beginning of cultural exchange between America and Europe. After Columbus, came millions of European immigrants who brought their art, music, science, medicine, philosophy and religious principles to America. • 30. Stages Of Attachment Of The Infant s Attachment Stages of attachment. Another of Bowlby s contributions is his proposal that the infant s attachment to caregiver develops in stages attuned to the infant s cognitive and emotional development. As described by Broderick Blewitt (2015), a bond emerges from the affect between mother and child in the first two months as the infant signals their needs by clinging, smiling, and crying. During this stage infants are not yet attached to anyone and do not discriminate between caregivers. Between their second and eighth month, infants become increasingly preferential of one caregiver, most often the mother. The primary indicator of the emerging attachment is whether or not the 7 8 month old infant protests when separated from their caregiver, and whether they greet the caregivers return with happiness. Soon thereafter, the infant should begin to develop additional attachments with their fathers, grandparents, babysitters etc. By 18 months most infants are attached to multiple caregivers (Broderick Blewitt, 2015, p. 135). Attachment is a system. As mentioned previously, Bowlby also argued that attachment is a system. Expanding on this, Bowlby proposed that the system serves three purposes; 1) It maintains proximity between infant and caregiver, nurturing the emotional bond In attachment theory this is known as proximity maintenance, 2) It provides the potential for on going protection known as a secure base, 3) It creates a haven for the infant when distressed ... • 33. Edward Richer Essay Gerhard Richer (1932~) is a German artist who is unique for not conforming to a particular movement or having his own artistic style. However, his works have been influenced by many art movements and styles, including Abstract Expressionism, Pop art, Minimalism, and Conceptualism. He was trained to paint a traditional realist art style in early years under the oppressive East German communist regime, banned from exposure to American Pop art and other contemporary art (1). Thus he often explored figurative expression or representation of subjects, until his exposure to abstract art in West Germany introduced him to an approach to art that was much more expressive of life and its realities (1). There are a couple of elements that set his painting apart from Friedrich s; that it has a surrealist element, and that Richter values the characteristics of modern art, meaning that the artwork does not focus on how to most imitate a subject most faithfully ( realistically ) but to capture the essence of it. The surrealist element in particular is significant when placed side by side with the traditional style of landscape painting, because his choice not to completely disassociate it with the orthodox is what allows it to emphasize the surreality of the piece (4). It is also set apart from romantic paintings by nature s indifference . The artwork has a lack of sympathy for the viewer s search for something to relate or connect to in the painting which links to its function and purpose. Sea Sea is are particularly significant work for being a sort of stepping stone for Richter. On one hand, we see how his background of being trained to paint in a traditionalist realistic painting style has influenced his photorealistic style, but on the other, his desire to move into a more expressive form of art as the discomfiting element and the inhuman detachment of Sea Sea ... On these records were information consisting of sounds, images, and words which were deemed worthy by a NASA committee to be presented to extraterrestrial life if they were to ever come across this record (NASA). The purpose of these records is to give information and later with Voyager 1 and 2, tell stories of life on Earth to other life that may one day come across these records. In the record there are songs from cultural past times, both east and west, which was a nice addition to the record for extraterrestrial life. These songs hone in not necessarily on the aspect of language, like that of the 55 different language greetings, but more on the sounds, history, and culture of our world. These songs tell a story of our changing history and of our pass times and one does not have to know the specific language of the song in order to enjoy the music. Adding natural images to correlate the sounds would help paint a picture of key beings on Earth and it would be interesting if an extraterrestrial resonated with one of the images as if they recognize or have something similar on their place of residence. Analysis Of Frankenstein Dark Elements Reagan Page Mrs. Schroder English IV Honors 8 December 2016 Frankenstein s Dark Elements Starting in the late eighteenth century, gothic literature rapidly expanded to become a major genre of study. There are many key elements that make a piece of literature gothic, many of these elements are found in Frankenstein. Three of the main elements that categorize gothic literature are extreme landscapes, supernatural manifestations, and intense emotions; these three elements can also be found in Frankenstein. One common element of gothic literature includes extreme landscapes. Gothic literature uses this key element to explore and emphasize the isolation these characters desire or face. So, while the location is an element of gothic literature, so is the reason for traveling to that location. The landscape of the summit of Montanvert is the place where Victor Frankenstein runs into the Creature, and the Creature begins to tell his tale. This is the first time in the novel the reader starts to connect with the Creature, a supernatural being. Supernatural manifestations are a must for gothic literature. These inventions of the mind tend to attract readers, setting this genre apart from all others. Supernatural manifestations make the ordinary seem not so ordinary, which helps add to the overall mystery and suspense of a novel. Gothic literature aims to create the feelings of suspense, gloom, isolation, and thrill; or simply emotions in general. The prime example in Frankenstein comes from Victor Frankenstein s invention of the Creature. The Creature can be described as essentially a functioning monster, pieced together by various parts to make it work like a human body would. In the time the novel was written, nothing like this had ever been accomplished, whereas in current times, the Creature might not classify as a supernatural manifestation. The idea for the Creature comes from Victor Frankenstein s love for the field of alchemy. Alchemist study the transformation of matter in the days prior to chemistry. • 36. A Brief Note On Creators And Victims Of Children There is a distinction between Creators and Victims. Creators are ambitious and let nothing stop them. Victims, on the other hand, let small barriers make big impacts on their lives and from there they give up. Although my family and I all grew up with similar resources, we all turned out different. My cousins, sister, and I all had parents that were not involved in our lives because our parents were, and still are, substance abusers. My sister and some of my cousins let their parents absence impact their future. In contrast, I decided I was going to make my own fate; I was not going to let their absence affect me. As a result, I am a Creator. In contrast, my sister and cousins are Victims, and it is clear to see how the roles play out. Victims and Creators handle individual responsibility different, in areas such as negative emotions, financial matters, and career/future plans. Victims do not like to take individual responsibility. Likewise, they do not process negative emotions well either. Instead they find someone or something to blame for their life problems. For example, my cousin Jacob, the issue with him is he does not take responsibility for anything. Also, he lets his negative emotions out on other people. When Jacob lost his first job, he immediately blamed my grandmother. Claiming it was my grandmother s fault for not letting him use her car enough. In that situation, Jacob is making excuses, he is denying his responsibilities. Jacob could have used the bus ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The pace of how technology has had an impact on medicine differs worldwide. In the third world countries the introduction of technology has been slow compared to first world countries. We cannot deny the prowess of medical technology and how the crucial it is for the people s health and the society. There are disadvantages and advantages that technology has brought however the advantages seem to override the disadvantages because its positives are magnified. Since the 18th century technology in medicine has been on the increase. There are a number of medical treatments and equipment that where discovered a long time ago and since them they have been enhanced by modern technology. The stethoscope first discovered by Rene Laennes (1816), Sir Alexander Fleming also discovered the first antibiotic which opened doors to so many other treatments for infections. Furthermore the first effective cancer chemotherapy drug (Nitrogen Mustered) was first discovered by Alfred G .Gilman in 1908. Nowadays there are a number of options offered for cancer. From the above discoveries new and modern medical equipment and treatments have been born, which are being appreciated because they have increased life expectancy. By Conspiracy Theorist , it is meant to reference a person who has spent at least ten years of their life to the ideas which counter those of larger accepted organizations (ex: Government). These persons must have published at least two books about their topics and must have some sort of mass following and audience. According to PBS, a Conspiracy Theorist is: someone who postulates on the existence of secret agreements between two or more people or government to perform unlawful acts.
