Feeling Small: Scale and Proportion in Art As I walk on the grounds of the Nelson Atkins Museum of
Art in Kansas City, I encounter one of the Oldenburg and van Bruggen s giant shuttlecocks.
Additionally, as I view and walk around this giant shuttlecock, I cannot help but think of how this
object is disproportional, especially in comparison to it s surroundings. The shuttlecock is huge and
unbelievably larger than the average size of a shuttlecock, which would fit within the palm of my
hand. An altered view is created by the use of the visual principles of scale and proportion in order to
create this sculpture. Distinguishing between scale and proportion is significant in depicting a specific
image in which the size is questionable and cannot be visualized accurately. According to the

The image is also funny because of the proportion of the objects within the piece of art. According to
the text, it is appeared that the badminton game was being played on the grass and it appears that the
shuttlecock fell during a game between two giants who used the museum as the net for the game. I
find this to be hilarious when I picture it in my head because the falsehood of the museum is amazing.
Normally a museum would be much larger than the individuals playing badminton and the objects
used to play the game. However, in this piece of art, it is the complete opposite and it makes me laugh
when thinking about the game of badminton. Although I am unsure if the artists intended to make the
artwork funny, I believe that it provides a sense of relief for the individuals viewing the pieces. The
artists deserve to be respected for the intelligent idea to create something that can be misinterpreted

When we use stereotypes, we are criticizing someone, for example, when we say all police officers are
corrupt, all men who aren t into sports are gay or all blonde women are dumb. Stereotyping is a result
of incompetence on distorted information accepted as a fact without question. A stereotype is simply a
widely held belief that an individual is a member of a certain group based upon characteristics.
Stereotyping can be positive, for example, all Blacks are good at sports, all Asians are good at math or
French people are romantic. Stereotypes can also help identify how to interact with each other, for
example Canadians are exceptionally polite. Either way stereotyping is morally wrong and
judgmental. If your group is positively stereotyped in an area, then you can endure a lot more
frustration and difficultly before you assume or infer that you don t belong in that domain (Steele,
2010). This paper will focus on the origin of stereotyping, how stereotypes affect judgement and
behavior and will explore profiling versus stereotyping.
Stereotyping is defined as an oversimplified, usually pejorative, attitude people hold toward those
outside one s own experience who are different. They are a result of incomplete or distorted
information accepted as fact without question. A stereotype is simply a widely held belief that an
individual is a member of a certain group based on characteristics. Due to the process of
overgeneralization within social perception, stereotyping leads to a great deal of inaccuracy in social

they are both solid, white, clear, soluble in water, and dissolves in acid. However the sodium nitrate
has crystal shape which is granular, and that is different from salt s crystal form, which is cubic. That
is how I confirmed that sample C was sodium nitrate. Sample D was identified as sodium thiosulphate

Berry is an active five year old that enjoys playing outside with her friends and exploring the outside
world. Berry is in Kindergarten and enjoys learning new information and making new friends. She

campus and one of few African American male teachers in the school district. Although most schools
