Machines In John Steinbeck s Grapes Of Wrath
Men create machines. Machines destroy men. Will this be the vicious cycle that ends mankind? With
machines taking over, it is difficult to see any other possible outcome. Machines are more efficient,
more intelligent, and overall better workers than the humans who created them. They have already
dominated over the farming industry, destroying homes and families, as seen in John Steinbeck s
Grapes of Wrath . In this novel, the Joad family is forced from their home by efficient tractors that
have taken over all the farms in their area. They must travel across America from Oklahoma to
California, leaving their home and everything they have ever loved behind. On their journey, they face
death of loved ones, starving children, and the struggle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This word choice makes the machines sound like threatening and dangerous beasts attacking the land
and the humans. They destroy life without care, barreling through people s property. Moreover, in The
Robots are Coming , Dargan personifies machines by describing them as animals: with clear cased
woofers for heads, / no eyes. They see us as a bat sees / a mosquito a fleshy echo, / a morsel of sound.
(lines 1 4). They see and hear us as an animal would without eyes, they can only hear. This

Women s Rights Activist Analysis
Many women s rights activists have been at the forefront of confronting domestic violence and other
issues affecting women. Due to the government s suspicion of large scale protests and rallies, many
activists rely on creatively presenting their activism as art, which does not require as many people
participating in such demonstrations and arouses less attention by the government. China requires
many NGOs to work with official government organizations such as the All China Women s
Federation. However, realizing the need for a more grassroots approach rather than an imposed top
down approach, many activists take activism into their own hands. For example, Li Maizi and a group
of women wore white wedding gowns splattered with fake blood in Beijing

Comparing 1984 And Nectar In A Sieve, And 1984
People are neither inferior nor superior and should have the freedom to express their authentic selves
without fear of being negatively judged. These rules are violated only when powerful elite believe that
they can rule over the masses. 1984 is a work of fiction, providing a stark view of the thriving culture
of totalitarianism, symbolizing as a reflection of modern fact in the USA and the world today. The
Freedom of Speech has become so restricted that the only one source of news is operated by the
governing body; whereas Kamala Markandaya writes about changing economic and political
situations in her country, her novel which was published in 1954 seven years after India gained its
independence from the British Imperialism. Industrial revolution lured Indians away from their
traditional roles to participate in the new economy. She emphasis on issues like the importance of
Freedom of Rights alongside the importance of goodness and spirituality. The poor suffer at the hands
of the strong but some of them understand that knowledge is a powerful tool for change, and redefine
the dishonor, repudiates their caste and crosses their skin color difference. In both novels, people
struggle for their rights. Whether it s a patriarchal society in which the right to property and right to
make important decisions rests with the eldest male members of the society as in Nectar in a Sieve or
in 1984 where woman are defined in a role of nurturer, procreate and espionage. Although 1984

The Relationship Between Faith And Reason In The Catholic...
Faith and Reason have long been a topic of discussion in the Catholic Church. Some might say that
faith and reason contradict each other, but the Catholic church disagrees. In the Catechism of the
Catholic church it states, Though faith is above reason, there can never be any real discrepancy
between faith and reason. Since the same God who reveals mysteries and infuses faith has bestowed
the light of reason on the human mind, God cannot deny himself, nor can truth ever contradict truth.
37 Consequently, methodical research in all branches of knowledge provided it is carried out in a truly
scientific manner and does not override moral laws, can never conflict with the faith, because the
things of the world and the things of faith derive from the same God. The humble and persevering
investigator of the secrets of nature is being led, as it were, by the hand of God in spite of himself, for
it is God, the conserver of all things, who made them what they are (CCC 159).The Catholic church
teaches that reason is a gift from God, and therefore, all things researched are done through because he
is the one who has created the person doing the reasoning. God wants us to use our minds in ways that
honor him, and the Catholic church continues to reinforce that this idea of faith and reasoning go
together, hand in hand. Faith is having the faith in the system of reason that is used to infer answers
from the Bible. The church teaches that there can never be a big difference between the

Macklemore Song Analyse
Macklemore Essay Last year Nike made 34.3M dollars off of their brand. Shoe companies publish so
many new shoes, so their devoted consumers can snatch it for a hefty expense. The Macklemore song
Wing$, addresses the consumer mindset. In the song Macklemore stated, Strangled by these laces,
laces I can barely talk. That s my air bubble and I m lost, if it pops. In the song he is talking about how
he was stuck in the consumer loop. When he talks about being strangled by the laces, he means the
shoes consume him. He feels he must get the newest brand/shoe, which is what school is like today.
Everyone in school is all about having the latest things, for example, this year and last year it was all

thought to be obsolete, which means these major companies are getting tons of money by paying their
workers sometimes nothing. In the song Macklemore talks about how his friends couldn t afford real

Review Of The War On Malaria
THE WAR ON MALARIA
JAYME SWANSON
BALTIMORE CITY COMMUNITY COLLEGE
DR. SAMUEL ODEDOKUN
ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY II
OCTOBER 19, 2014 The War on Malaria
About 3.3 billion people, that is about half of the world s population are at risk of contracting malaria
(figure 1). Every year there are 250 million cases of malaria, and nearly 1 million deaths. That
amounts to 2,732 deaths per day. Out of those million people that die every year, 800,000 of them are
African children under the age of 5. To control malaria three actions need to be taken: insecticides
need to be used to decrease the vector population, people have to be educated as to how to prevent the
vector from reproducing, and anti malarial drugs need to be distributed. To understand the vector and
what the vector is, scientists had to first discover what the parasite was and how it worked. It was not
until the year 1880 that French Physician Charles Laveran discovered that Malaria was caused by a
protozoan in the genus Plasmodium (Malaria, 2013)
Figure 1: Malaria endemic areas around the world. Areas where malaria transmission occurs are in
red, places that are at risk and malaria transmission occurs infrequently are in yellow, and places in
grey is where there is no malaria present (Malaria, 2010).
There are four species in the Plasmodium Genus that affect humans: P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. ovale,
and P. malariae. What people did not know then, was how the protozoan got from

Examples Of Hero Cycle Of Harry Potter
The Hero Cycle of Harry Potter
What is a hero s cycle? The hero s cycle is a quest pattern that all heroes (someone who embarks on a
quest) follow. The hero s cycle is found in almost all myths, legends and novels. A great example of
the hero s cycle could be seen in the novel, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer s Stone. The main character,
Harry Potter, goes through three important stages of the cycle, the departure, initiation, and the return
stage. Theses stages have subdivisions which not only contributes to the growth of the hero, but also
lays out what a hero goes through in order to achieve his/her quest.
Joseph Campbell, the founder of the hero s journey precisely lays out each stage and subdivision on
what the hero goes through. The hero first starts in the ordinary world where he is used to everything.
Harry who lives in the cubby under the stairs, is used to being bullied by his uncle, aunt and his
cousin. Harry s journey begins when he gets a mail. This mail is important because Harry has never
received a letter before due to the fact that he has no family. As he is opening the envelope Dudley,
Harry s cousin, sanches the mail from Harry and gives it to his father, Vernon.
Vernon refuses Harry s call to adventure by ripping, burning, and shredding the mail Harry receives.
Joseph Campbell s Hero With A Thousand Faces, as summarized by Christopher Vogler, states, A Hero
often refuses [or is reluctant] to take on the Journey because of fears and insecurities that have

An Examination of Nation Building in Afghanistan and East Timor Afghanistan is a shattered society.
The participants in the Bonn Conference have set for the leaders and people of their country the
formidable challenge of consolidating the peace process in less than three years. But it will take much
more than 36 months to heal the wounds left by 23 years of war. The process of healing has started,
however, and the members of the international community must be careful not to allow that process to
reverse itself. This requires from all, a continued commitment and determination to stay the course. It
also requires that realistic and achievable objectives be set.

But as Kofi Annan reported on March 18, 2002, it will take more than a quick fix to repair the years of
trauma and war that have wrecked this extremely poor country.
In recent years, the UN has been entrusted with providing assistance to several countries in post
conflict situation, including the newly independent East Timor, now renamed Timor Leste. The
experiences of the United Nations in East Timor have shown that the reestablishment, at a minimum,
of basic judicial functions must be among a mission s top priorities from the earliest stages of
deployment. Looking into the role of the UN intervention in East Timor, it is possible to apply the
lessons learned in the violence wrought country on the current situation at Afghanistan to create a
sustainable environment for constructive nation building.

Judaism Research Paper
Judaism
What is Judaism? Who are Jews? Judaism is considered one of the oldest and most popular
monotheistic religions today. Judaism s followers are called Jews and they have been through many
tough challenges and trials but are still able to proudly identify themselves as Jews. Jewish beliefs,
customs, history, holidays, symbols, and the holocaust are just a few of the things that make Jews who
they are.
Jews have many of their own beliefs that make them unique from our society. They have their own
image of who God is. They have faith that there is only one God. They believe he is all powerful and
is above all earthly things. They understand that God does not have his own body and that he has

The Star of David being the most popular. It is most commonly known as the Jewish symbol today.
The Chai symbol is simply the Hebrew word for living and is often found on jewelry along with the
Hamesh Hand. The Menorah is also a main symbol of Judaism. It is one of the oldest symbols and is
the symbol for Hanukkah. Probably the most difficult time for Jews was the Holocaust. The Nazis
attempted to wipe out the Jews completely. They managed to murder over 6 million Jews in the
Holocaust and of those 6 million, 1.5 million were children. The Jews were almost powerless and
there was little resistance from them. World War II started in 1939. Hitler was attempting to achieve
world domination. He targeted the Jews because he hated them and blamed them for all of his
problems. However, the Holocaust was kept very secret. The Nazis were very ingenious and were able
to keep the world from knowing anything. Judaism has great significance in our religions and history
today. It s interesting how each little thing can have such an important role in a whole religion. In
conclusion, Jewish beliefs, customs, holidays, symbols, history, and the holocaust all play a crucial
role in making Jews who they are

Blue Ridge Poem
When I came out to my mother, I did it by accident. Drowsy and slipping through striped yellow
hours, dull drum of wheels on Ohio snow, I realized: something had disappeared. Not the charm of
floral button downs locked inside the trunk. Skin tight jeans still stuffed beneath the seat. No. The
poem: my attempt to breathe life into the Syrian man thrown from a building, met by stone carrying
children who were brought by their fathers to teach them what not to be. This poem, this confession (I

wanted it there.

Gender Roles In The Sun Also Rises Robert Cohn

interesting and unique ways. The book follows a group of Americans as they travel around Europe
soon after World War One. In Ernest Hemingway s masterpiece The Sun Also Rises the narrator, Jake
Barnes, and the other main character s gender characterization is unique in that the main character s
gender traits juxtapose each other throughout the novel. Jake Barnes masculinity shifts multiple times

Cohn is a notorious American writer but he still shows his insecurity. One of the reasons for his
insecurity is that Cohn is one of the few men in the story who is revealed to not be a veteran of the
war. Cohn also experienced a lot of racial discrimination as a Jew when he went to Princeton
(Hemingway, 12). To compensate for his self consciousness, he became the middleweight boxing
champion of Princeton (Hemingway, 11). Despite his athletic achievements, Cohn is still portrayed as
feminine. His first wife left him before he could leave her and the next woman he had a relationship
with was very forceful and she treated Cohn as a careless possession (Hemingway, 13). The woman,
whose name is Frances, took advantage of Cohn s insecurities and she used them to dominate, not
letting him look at another woman (Hemingway, 13). Cohn s weakness for women causes him to
nearly kill Romero in a fistfight. Jealous of Romero after [Lady Ashley] told [Cohn] off, Cohn
attacked Romero (Hemingway, 204). Cohn After dominating Romero in the fight, he fails to sustain
the dominance when he attempts to shake Romero s hand and as a result, the bull fighter chap hit

In the beginning of Emerson s first paragraph poem, he uses strong diction. Use of such words in this
manner assists in his main purpose of expounding the idea how one must rely on only themselves and
never no one else, how it s a wrong decision. He uses such words or phrases such as imitation is
suicide, no hope and envy is ignorance. Use of such words definitely makes an impression on the
reader which is the whole purpose, but it influences the reader to how they are going to live their life,

Regardless of the shortness in length, though, it is a rather emotional book with quite a few messages
behind the fictional storyline. These messages, however, cannot be discovered right off the bat. To
genuinely absorb the messages the author teaches and genuinely understand the meaning behind them,
one must read the book in its entirety. Steinbeck educates readers about his ideas and messages

Comparing Shakespeare s Macbeth And Shakesperes Plays
Generally speaking the mind can react differently to the same prompt due to the structure which it was
formed from. Physcologists say there are ways to trick the mind into seeing or feeling a certain way.
Consequently, how people percieve an act changes depending how it was performed. Whereas
Shakesperes plays brought about an emotional appeal to the readers. Granted , in society today it has
become more complex yet easier to make an act retrieve an emotional response from watchers or
readers. Futhurmore, Willamson and Stewart both perform the same scene from Act 2 Scene 1 of
William Shakespeare s play Macbeth

Particularly, Stewarts background sound is simialr to a heart beat; one can hear the swishing sound of
the blood pumping in and out of the heart. The heartbeat is a key componet in the effectness of
Stewarts version, leaving room for many possible reasons behind it. Consequently , the heart beat
could be representation of Stewarts own heart racing before commiting the deed ahead. Also at the end
of this verison the heart beat stops pumping and the sound stops, implying a death of somesort took
place. In addtion, Stewart uses his vocal cords to howl like a wolf; this sound effect adds to the idea
that Stewarts quest brings forth an excitment/happiness . The howl could be a symbol for a step
towards freedom for Stewart. Simiarly, Williamsons background sound is mere static. The static
embleshies Williamsons verson by adding to the idea of his mind unraveling. While the static aids in
the effeect of Williamsons tone throughout; it is especially affective towards the end of the scene. As a
rule static can be heard at the end of a call with bad reception before the call is dropped. Likewise
static in this version could represent Williamsons state of mind; thus at the closing of the scene the

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Paper
Mental health is a fragile thing and terminal conditions such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
greatly impact it. ALS is a neurodegenerative disease that attacks a person s physical function. It
progressively saps a person s strength and leads to the failure of organs. Unfortunately, this disease is
not fully understood and is difficult to diagnose (Rosenfeld Strong, 2015, pp. 318 319). Knowing fully
well that this disease is a death sentence, ALS patients generally have a negative outlook and this
significantly influences their mental health. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis can be diagnosed mainly
through the medical perspective and has been extensively researched to determine the components and
controversies it contains. Determining whether or not an individual has ALS falls under the medical
perspective in psychology. Being able to determine a cause of abnormal symptoms through physical
examinations and tests describes the medical perspective. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Another research method used by professionals is the General Health Questionnaire. This provided an
effective way to subjectively evaluate a patient s mental health by obtaining first hand information
directly from the patient (Albertini, Desnuelle, Montel, Spitz, 2012, p. 600). The Kaplan Meier model
also determined mental health status by using gathered data from other tests to determine the
effectiveness of the coping strategies on the patient s overall mental health. To get an overall
understanding of how the patient is doing based on their mental health, coping strategies, and disease
progress, the Bravais Pearson correlation test is performed (Albertini et al., 2012, p. 600).

Essay on The Visual Analysis of The Gleaners
The Gleaners (Des glaneuses) is an oil painting, 83.8 cm × 111.8 cm (33 in × 44 in), created by French
realist painter Jean Francois Millet in 1857. The piece of oil painting vividly depicts the nineteenth
century French rural life, with a rich flavor of harvest.
Jean Francois Millet arranges the farm as the main scene of background, and aims at three women
gleaners being bent to pick up ears of wheat. Through the observation of the painting, we can see three
peasant women occupy in the center of the screen, each bending with different angles, while their eyes
all raking down to the ground. To contrast with the distant crowd, they wear coarse clothes and clunky

As some parts of background are closer to the light source than the front, they are applied with
brighter hues, high in value. In addition, Millet places things like haystack, trees and farmhouse in the
back, and peasant women in the front. Hence. On the basis the positions of objects, the principle of
line perspective, and the relative distance to the viewer, three gleaners visually appear within a larger
proportion on the painting. In other words, the front figures sizes are bigger than the back objects .
Further more, in the painting, the Gleaners , the entire screen is filled with contrast elements. First of
all, the main figures in the front labor scene are full of rich vigor, contrasting to the background with

Nelson Mandela In South Africa
I am Nelson Mandela but everybody call me Madiba and I am a leader of South Africa. South Africa
is not a normal country when the nation remains s racially and economically divided after the end of
apartheid. One country but two societies such as Black and White. As a Black leader, I do not have a
support from White community. He can win the election but can he run the country? Ruin the country
when apartheid still appears as well as not let South Africa appears to be on the verge of a civil war
are the monumental oppositions I have to face with. My mission is to unify the societies. And this is
my first day of working as the president position. When I walk into the Union Buildings, I can see the
White staffs are bitter and disrespect through their body language and action such as eyes cat down,
arms folded and some of them turn away from me with the belongings in their hands. Understand their
thinking and feeling, I organize a small meeting to convince the staffs to stay with me and run the
government with their hearts. And when Jason, my bodyguard asks me for more men, I decide to use
SAS staff because this is the opportunity to show the citizens that South Africa is different now and
we have to look into the future, I know Jason does not like this but I say with him Forgiveness start
here. Few days later, I attend the rugby match between Springbok and England. This match likely to
present the entrenched problems in South African community. I can see how serious the situation is
when the Black cheering England team and the White sport fans support the old ways with their
outdated flags. Moreover, when I arrive there are many aggressive people throw beer cans to me. At
that day, our team lose. Based on the bad result, National Sport Council decides to eliminate the
emblem and colour of Springbok because they represent apartheid through the colour of the uniform.
As a leader of the whole nation, I believe rugby is the symbol of South Africa and Springbok is the
factor for reunification without using any power or taking away White South African their most
valued traditions. Therefore, I ask the National Sports Council to restore the Springbok s name,
emblem as well as the colour. Luckily, I have

lived in Tennessee. A lot of the people she works with have facebook and it will give her another way
of communicating with them. I explained to my mom what social networking is and helped her set up
her own Facebook account. Through the tech teach assignment I also taught my mom a few
technology skills that she can use later on when writing emails, using Microsoft Word, editing

Revolutionary Change By Betty Friedan
Change
The definition of revolutionary is Involving or causing a complete or dramatic change and this is what
the American society went through during the years of 1945 1970. Americans experienced rebellion
and recovery which led to revolutionary changes. For example, in 1954 the war in Vietnam began and
inspired protests across the nation, because it was an unpopular war. Americans also faced the threat
of communism and the atomic bomb which made Americans anxious. The process of recovery took a
long time for many Americans, they had been through years of war and with a new war in the horizon
the peace would have to wait once again ( Prosperity and Protest... 964). An important author living
during this era was Betty Friedan, because she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Feminine Mystique launched and led a hugely successful movement, which is what makes Betty
Friedan so revolutionary. It made enormous progress by fighting employment discrimination,
advancing educational opportunities, and protecting reproductive rights ( Women s Movement 2).
Women currently earn more bachelor s and master s degrees than men do. Nationwide, numbers for
woman police officers, firefighters, lawyers and many more occupations are on the rise. ( Women s

Materialism In Alexander Pope And Pope s Rape Of The Lock
The views of women have altered over time, but have always had objectifying tendencies. During the
18th century, cosmetic alteration to natural beauty peaked and materialism heightened throughout
societal views. Authors such as Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift vividly spew these views
throughout their writings. Pope s Rape of the Lock exposes the materialism used in objectifying
women, mainly in the upper class societal levels. The whole plot of the story centers around a
cosmetic appearance creating an objectified view, as since the lock of hair was cut from a woman s
head, the missing lock became, so called, evidence of a man s sexual conquest. Other sexual
conquests, forced or not, are spoken with anything but love and only those of ... Show more content on

This elevation highly represents the overall theme that materialism plays an almost biblical role in
society. The other way to analyze the list is that the Bibles are brought down to the very materialistic
level of the other listed cosmetics. Another aspect to note is that Bibles is plainly listed, not the first or
last mentioned item, but somewhere in the middle. Both ways conclude that the cosmetic, material
items compare at the same level as the Bible s paired along with them. Another list comes with a
comparison of paired items that contradict each other s importance; ... Or stain her honor, or her new
brocade,/ forget her prayers, or miss a masquerade,/ Or lose her heart, or necklace, at a ball;... (Pope II
106 107). The first description used in each line is something of importance, as staining honor,
forgetting prayers or losing her heart all have serious implications and consequences. But then those
more serious actions are paired with trivial material ones; staining a new brocade, missing a
masquerade or losing a necklace at a ball. The material actions paired with important ones really unify
them as being on the same level of importance. The contradiction is removed and materialism is
elevated.
Objectification of women goes hand and hand with materialism. When Pope speaks of the sexual
conquests in The Rape of the Lock, he only focuses on the material aspects that result

Disneyland Is A New World Of Yesterday, Tomorrow, And Fantasy
Over the entrance to Main Street in Disneyland is a quote by Walt Disney reading Here you leave
today and enter the world of yesterday, tomorrow, and fantasy (Disney). Even then Walt Disney knew
what this park is because here I stand with my Aunt Laura, Cousin Ricky, and Sister Monica with
among the thousands around us staring off at the dark and distant gates, waiting for entry through to
the happiest place on earth. We all stand with impatience and excitement, for we know what is to
come will surely be an adventure into a new world filled with amazing attractions and attacks on
nostalgia that if only for a moment can take someone back to their childhood.
First thing I see after crossing the threshold is a rather large Mickey Mouse flower pattern that is a

Main Street. Shaken out of my nostalgia, I hear the sound before I see a marching band playing, the
trolley in the distance, and kids and adults alike lining up to take a picture with Disney characters. My

Bruno Mars Grenade
In this generation, many popular musicians express the hardships brought forth by unrequited love in
their songs. It is probably one of the most commonly conveyed subjects. Music artists such as Bruno
Mars and his songs like Grenade is no exception to this popular trend. In the song Grenade, he reveals
his persistent devotion for a girl. Lamentably, as a victim of unilateral love, he is inferior in the
relationship. In the song, the girl seizes the dominant ability to manipulate Bruno Mars physical well
being and emotional negatively by being uninterested towards his love, and positively refusing to
return his affection. From such a position of inferiority, Mars uses numerous rhetorical strategies such
as literary devices, logical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, Bruno Mars exhibits the extreme elongate to which he genuinely loves the girl in the song,
determined to persuade his audience that the girl should love him back. Mars uses words which allude
to violence, such as grenade , blade, and bullet to illustrate his deposition to experience physical pain
for the girl s affection. He constantly uses these words to indicate that these destructive weapons will
not hinder his obsessive love for her. In the chorus, his obsession with the girl is made even more
obvious because he proclaims that he would catch a grenade for her, throw his hands on a blade for
her, jump in front of a train for her, and take a bullet straight through his brain. His eagerness to make
such sacrifices is intentionally detailed in the chorus which, through repetition, places emphasis on
these phrases. These phrases or hyperboles integrate to Mars ethos because they enhanced his
character by disclosing his authentic commitment to sacrificing his entire life for the girl. In turn, the
ethos of credibility convinces the audience to take his side.
Mar s most vigorous appeal in this particular song is his emotional appeal, or pathos. While building
the legitimacy of his own character, he utilizes pathos in order to persuade his audience into
cerebrating that the girl should love him back. He does this by portraying

Foreign Language Learners Behavior On Captioned Videos
Gass, Sydorenko, Winke (2013) investigated foreign language learners behavior on captioned videos.
Their investigation aroused from various previous studies that showed positive evidence of the
effectiveness of captioned video in improving learners skill. However, many of prior studies did not
provide exact measurement on which part(s) learners paid attention to when they watched captioned
and non captioned video. The absence of precise measurement limited the finding of the previous
studies (Gass, Sydorenko, Winke 2013). Therefore, using eye tracking device, they wanted to observe
how often foreign language learners read captions on captioned videos. They also intended to
investigate whether specific foreign language and the familiarity of the video content play role in
learners attention to the captions.
Thirty three college level foreign language learners who are in their fourth semester were included in
this study. They are English speaker learners of Arabic (n = 7), Chinese (n = 7), Russian (n = 8), and
Spanish (n = 10) with no experience of studying abroad. Twenty two participants are female and the
rest are male. The writers were aware that their participants might had different level of second
language proficiency despite the similarity in the length of learning. The, however, did not mention
how these participants are assigned to the study. Neither did the writer explain whether the
participants of similar language were taking similar classes or not. I think

The Destiny Of The Republic By Candice Millard
President James Garfield s tragic death is brought to new life in the book The Destiny of the Republic.
Author Candice Millard shows readers just how that very incident brought one nation together. This
being in the middle of the Gilded Age, at times it looked like the nation had everything under its belt
but in reality, people didn t see the corrupt happenings at that time. Through poverty, war, a surprising
turn in events, to downright failure in medicine, President Garfield s life was a downward spiral and
he wasn t even aware. As much as Garfield was unaware of that, Americans at the time were unaware
that they were slowly beginning to unite over the ignorance of both Doctor Bliss and Charles Guiteau.
Millard didn t just write a book of a detailed and historic biography, she wrote somewhat effortlessly
of the personal yet challenging circumstances Garfield and his family were in and simply told a story.
The author really goes in depth and is interested in Garfield s poverty stricken family as a young boy
because this is one of the many reasons America adored him so much. As he lost his father, worked
endlessly to be able to attend college, became a teacher after just one year, and then going onto
congress, he rose up to become the best president the nation has ever had in that short amount of time.
These details portrayed about his upbringing, show people how remarkably significant and
hardworking this man was. Millard shows that Garfield knew he was brought up to make

Summary Of The Film High Art By Lisa Cholodenko
High Art is a Canadian American independent film, and has its genre that is drama and romance. The
film was directed and written by Lisa Cholodenko. It was released on June 12, 1998 in the United

of the film. Syd, acted by Radha Mitchell, is a career woman at the photography magazine called

In this respect, her storytelling skills with a slow tempo enhance the film to have a strong sense of
realism. Also, the other one is the set design, especially Lucy s place. The director perfectly describes
Lucy s apartment as a New Yorker s place. So, it makes the audience feel like people actually live
there. We can see the arrangement of furniture and pictures on the wall. With the concrete image of
space, the director separates the apartment into two places that are living room and bedroom. The
living room is opened to everyone who visits her house, but the bedroom is more private place. When
Lucy and her few friends go into the private place, they do drugs and show their reliance on drug use,
which might indicates the dark truths of their lives. To show the mood of the place and private, drug
addicted life, the director uses not only a minimized use of lights, but also dreamlike soundtracks. In
addition, the director chooses medium shots and different use of lights for the relationship between
Syd and Lucy, and thus the intended settings help show character s emotions such as tenderness of
love. For example, when they make love in Lucy s bedroom. The use of light is quite different from
the heroin scene. The director uses medium shots with a full amount of natural light from windows to
describe their love. Thus, I

Factors That Influenced The Partition Of Africa
In 1828 Shaka, leader of the Zulu tribe prophesied that the swallows , white men building mud houses,
would come to conquer his people. By the end of the century his prophecy was reality. The
extraordinary expansion drift of all major industrialised countries in Europe led to an unparalleled
division of the African in the last two decades of the nineteenth century.
Key reason to expand pivoted around the European economy. The industrial revolution in Europe had
changed the landscape from rural agricultural to urban industrialised. The economic system that
prevailed was capitalism. Trademark of capitalism is a constant search for markets to establish
economic growth. During the great depression of 1873 1896 many continental countries opted for a
protective system. For instance the average French tariff rose from 5.2% in 1875 to 10.4% in 1895, in

Implications Of Consumer Location Based Services Apps
Implications of consumer location based services apps
Introduction
Location based services (LBS) have been on the rise since public access to positioning technologies.
These services are increasingly being used on mobile devices. Between 2010 and 2013 mobile internet
usage increased 359%, whereas desktop internet usage only increased by 4% (Ju Young, Johnson, Mee
Mun, 2015). LBS create an augmented reality by adding and integrating information to real world
experiences (Pedrana, 2014). LBS apps, such as Grindr, Yelp and Foursquare, use the geographic
location of their users to provide or augment an activity. Although these consumer and social

The app is not only a way for gay men to have a dating experience, but it also puts members of this
community in contact with each other as a place to find help or support. If someone cannot find their
place in a gay community in their area, they can turn to Grindr as a way to locate individuals. This app
brings together overlapping communities, putting people with similar sexualities and locations in
contact (Shotwell, 2011). In this regard, it is beneficial to provide specific demographics with LBS
apps as a way to create a new space for the community to connect. Although there are benefits to the
location based nature of Grindr, we must remain critical of the privacy issues and social implications
of the app. Grindr s privacy policy states that third parties, such as advertisers and partners, may
access user information and that Grindr expressly disclaim[s] responsibility for information collected
through them (Grindr, 2015). User information that can be accessed by Grindr and third parties
includes names, photos, height, weight, email address and so on. Some may not be bothered by this,
but there are serious implications to consider. Legal and social rights need to be considered regarding
the collection of personal information, as it can be used and exploited in many ways (Wilken, 2014).
Commercial exploitation can occur by selling personal data, and using to reduce transparency and
influence consumers.

Much nineteenth century verse is portrayed as neoclassical. This was the significant style utilized

Biblical Genealogy Is Important For Establishing Identity
Prior to this passage, Jacob moved his family to this region in Canaan and bought land from Hamor,
instead of remaining with Esau and kinfolk (Gen 33:18). Now in a land known to worship false gods,
Jacob and his family are vulnerable and separated from a community of likeminded practitioners.
When Genesis 34 begins, we learn the lineage of Dinah as Leah s daughter with Jacob (Gen 34:1).
Biblical genealogy is important to establishing identity as it expresses idealized understandings of
families. Leah is the daughter of Laban to which Jacob was tricked into marriage (Gen 29:21 25).
Leah, after birthing several sons, delivered a daughter for which she named Dinah (Gen 30:21). As a
sister with several older brothers, the assumption is that Dinah was sheltered and naïve since she is
alone in the city without an escort. Moshe Reiss in The Family Relationship of Simeon and Dina
states, She is under her father s protection and it seems unlikely that she went out without permission.
The term ‫ֵ֤צא‬ ‫ַוֵּת‬ ‫ות‬ ‫ֹ֖א‬ ‫ְר‬‫ִל‬ (went out to visit) causes much debate among critics as it is seen as an
inappropriate behavior for a young lady. The phrase went out to visit implies interaction with
outsiders. Dinah would not have gone out without knowing where she might be headed, as it would
have left her vulnerable and invited trouble. Without any further details, it is implied that travel was
accepted and a coexistence among the groups was present and generally peaceful.

The Counter Terrorism Law
Counter terrorism Law
No one can deny that the word terrorism is hated to be heard. Terrorism is commonly known as any
action referring to violence against innocent citizens or causing damages to a public or private
property for political purposes. According to Maria Keet, (Senior Lecturer with the Department of
Computer Science, University of Cape Town) Terrorism is resulted due to plenty of causes that made
such a phenomenon be a public concern. Separatism is probably the main reason of arising of
terrorism. The conflict between people is due to nationalism and racism issues. This conflict arises
with the existence of inequality, racism and political opportunities. Other reason of arising of terrorism
is poverty and social inequality. Some statistics proved that 15% of the population consumes 85% of
the resources all over the world which made the other 85% of population fight for these resources by
any means. Last but not the least; Religion is one of the causes of terrorism especially in Egypt.
Terrorism became widely spread in the Egyptian streets after the 30th June revolution in 2013. After
the sacking of the former president, who belonged to a religious organization, his supporters decided

Nearly everything you see in stores and even in your home was, at some point, transported overland
by a truck. Tractor trailer rigs in particular, haul cargo over longer distances than those covered by
local delivery trucks. Because of this, they carry much heavier loads and can weigh up to 80,000
pounds. This makes them 20 to 30 times heavier than the average car.
Truck drivers must obey the same traffic rules as other vehicles on the road and like many motorists,
their negligence can cause an accident. However, in a tractor trailer accident, the result can be
devastating to the occupants of the other vehicle. Their overwhelming size and weight can completely
demolish smaller vehicles. This is why so many federal regulations specifically ... Show more content

Truck drivers with multiple traffic violations and tractor trailer accidents on their driving record are
somehow able to get rehired several times. These types of drivers rarely improve their records because
of their dangerous driving habits. Habits are notoriously difficult to change.
Trucking carriers are increasingly hiring inexperienced drivers because of the current driver shortage.
Most of the experienced drivers are retiring, which means a dangerously large percentage of truck
drivers on the road today have minimal experience.
Distracted Driving
Truck drivers are distracted by many of the same things as the ordinary motorist. These include cell
phone conversations, texting, GPS programming, mobile app use, eating, daydreaming, reaching for
objects, and other distractions both inside and outside of the truck.
Fatigue
Federally mandated hours of service rules directed at ensuring that truck drivers get their rest, such as
placing maximum time limits on continuous driving, do not necessarily keep fatigued drivers off the
road. Drivers may fail to get a good night s rest or knowingly violate regulations in order to meet their
schedules. Fatigue can impair driving as severely as intoxication, and in extreme cases, cause the
driver to fall asleep at the

The Rule Of The Republic
With the constitution of 1532 proclaiming Alessandro de Medici hereditary duke the Republic died,
and the Medici family once again rose from the ashes, ending the historical struggle between the
Medicean and Republican governments of the Florentine Renaissance. Duke Alessandro de Medici s
assassination in 1537 and widespread uncertainty surrounding his inexperienced and young successor,
Cosimo de Medici, momentarily rekindled hope for a return of the Republic. However, not only did
Cosimo thwart any hope for the return of the Republic, he went on to rule Florence for almost forty
years and erect a Grand Dukedom that lasted until the mid 18th century. Propaganda in the form of art
played a huge role in the consolidation of the Medici dukedom under Cosimo. The political nuances
evident in the visual representations commissioned at this time were vital in the manipulation of the
public, the establishment of the Medici as a ducal power and the subversion of Republican ideals. In
January 1537, Cosimo was declared the head of Florentine government, however, he was still far from
the powerful monarch that he is to become. Those who put Cosimo in power were members of
Florentine aristocratic families who planned to establish an oligarchical government, with the
adolescent Cosimo as mere a figurehead. Groups, exiled in 1532 following the reinstatement of the
Medici, assumed the position to seize Florence aided by the King of France. Simultaneously, troops
belonging to the Holy

What Is My Culture Essay
I am familiar with my culture because my grandparents were able to impose their customs onto my
parents and their children. Without them I would not be eating traditional foods, celebrating the
Hispanic culture, or be aware of my family history. I am 100% Mexican, and I admire the Latin
culture to the fullest. The Mexican culture consists of a tight family, plentiful cuisine, Spanish
language, Latin music, and the Catholic religion. Growing up in a Mexican household has definitely
influenced my morals, values, and character. Although I remain living in a Hispanic household I
sometimes forget how important the culture influences the person I am today.
In the Mexican culture, we cook with many different spices, vegetables, and meats.

I would visit every day afterschool and it was the best adventure running through multiple gardens
with different crops. My grandparents grew cactus, lemons, onions, tomatoes, cilantro, and aloe vera
plants. It is a small reminder of their ranch in Zacatecas, Mexico and it is also their getaway from the
city. My grandparents grow their own crops because to them it is a hobby, and they are able to sell
them when there is an exceeding amount of harvest. Agriculture is common in most Hispanic families,
whether it is owning a simple lemon tree or growing a small aloe vera plant, there is always something
sprouting. I found it unusual that no matter what oppression we were put through we were still able to
preserve our most important customs and values. Many other cultures were stripped of their identities,
and till today we are able to pass down our traditions. Learning about how my family traveled from
deep into Mexico to Southern California brining their culture with them is amazing. Being able to
speak a different language with people that share the same ethnicity reminds me of how special my
cultural identity is. The Mexican culture is rich of culture has not been affected by newer

Analysis Of The American Dream In Death Of A Salesman
Death of Salesman is a story about an extremely hard working man, named Willy, and his family who
are struggling in fulfilling their dreams. In Death of a Salesman, Willy has many conflicting feelings
with his jobless son Biff. Throughout the story, Willy believes that success will come to him if he
works the hardest he can and by being famous in the spectrum of business and jobs. Biff on the other
hand realizes that this is not the way success is achieved and is more angered by his father s delusions
towards this idea. In the end of the book, Willy starts to realize that Biff might be correct after all after
Willy was fired from his job and decides to commit suicide as a result to get insurance money for Biff
to start a business. Willy s unshakeable pride in this belief, also called The American Dream ,
ultimately led to his demise and most importantly his death. In Death of a Salesman, Arthur Miller
uses an illusional tone, repetition, and idiomatic phrases to exemplify the idea that having excessive
pride in a certain belief is going to ultimately lead to a person s demise. Arthur Miller uses an illusive
tone throughout the story when Willy is discussing the success he had in his past. Although this tone
makes it seem like Willy is being treated unjustly because of his previous successes that is not
necessarily true. The quote, ... in 1928 I had a big year. I averaged a hundred and seventy dollars a
week in commissions (Miller 82) , shows how Willy s belief that he has worked and accomplished too
much to be fired by Howard. The statement Willy makes is actually false. In reality he was never this
successful and in return shows that he is not that much worth to the firm. This creates an illusive tone
because it shows a deceptive memory that was untrue and makes it seem like Willy is being unfairly
treated, but in reality is just showing that Willy has too much pride in himself to the point that he
remembers things that are untrue, thus alluding back to the purpose that having too much pride in a
belief is going to ultimately lead to their demise. Another way Miller shows Willy s excessive pride is
when Willy tries to emphasize the wonder of America by saying, ...and that s the wonder, the wonder
of

W.B. Yeats and History Essay
Yeats in Time: The Poet s Place in History
All things can tempt me from this craft of verse:
One time it was a woman s face, or worse
The seeming needs of my fool driven land;
Now nothing but comes readier to the hand
Than this accustomed toil.
In these lines from All Things can Tempt Me (40, 1 5), Yeats defines the limitations of the poet
concerning his role in present time. These temptations (his love for the woman, Maude Gonne, and his
desire to advance the Irish Cultural Nationalist movement) provide Yeats with the foundation upon
which he identifies his own limitations. In his love poetry, he not only expresses his love for Gonne,
he uses his verse to influence her feelings, attempting to gain her love and ... Show more content on

The sword signifies his words, which he holds in the upstairs of his mind. This metaphor gives the
words great power. Either on a page or spoken, they can be called upon for battle to violently disrupt
the world. However, Yeats is not concrete in presenting this perception as accurate. The last two lines
highlight the questioning ?Did not? which begins the previous acclamation of poetic influence. Here
the speaker gives a different perspective, saying, Yet would be now, could I but have my wish, /
Colder and dumber and deafer than a fish. (9 10). Now, Yeats s vision of the poet is cold, completely
lacking passion. He is dumb and therefore unable to influence others with his words. He is deaf and
therefore unable to be influenced by the words of others. Many levels of interaction in the present
world are taken away from the poet by this image; but, the sense of sight remains. Just as the fish can
only survive in water, the poet can only function as an observer.
In The Lake Isle of Innisfree (15), Yeats takes this purely perceptive role and places it in the context of
time. In the last three lines, the poet says (in the present tense), I hear lake water lapping with low
sounds by the shore; / While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements gray/ I hear it in my deep
heart s core. (11 12). Throughout these lines, the poet stands completely stationary upon the lifeless
pavement, never interacting with his environment. Unlike the deaf fish described in the

Why Summer is my Favorite Season of the Year Essay
My favorite season of the year is summer because of the warm weather, the school vacation, and the
endless fun. I really enjoy the warm weather because it s the perfect atmosphere to do outdoor
activities. My favorite part about summer has to be the fact that school is closed for two months.
During summer, you re free to do whatever you want, not worrying about curfew or waking up early
for school. Summer time is a great time to relax with friends and family by soaking up the sun at a
beach or simply having dinner together. I love the hot and humid days that makes you want to dive
into a fresh and cold pool. When summer time starts, you can wear lighter clothes, which are much
more comfortable. The weather allows people to go outdoors to ... Show more content on

The break calls for staying up late and waking up whenever you want to. Everyone works so hard
during the school year, so they deserve that free time. Summer times are stress free, relaxing, and
basically fun. You don t have to worry about homework, projects, and studying for a test. One of my
favorite summer pastimes is staying up late watching movies and eating junk food, and then waking
up late and having brunch. Summer season is the best time for festivals and activities. You can never
get bored on a summer day or night. During the day, there are fun activities such as: swimming,
sports, picnics, and barbeques. Friends and family spend a lot of time together during the summer
time. There is a lot of good food, drinks, and fun music. Everyone is laughing and having a good time.
Summer evenings are the best time for concerts, movies, parties, and relaxing with friends. The
summer evenings are beautiful because of the sparkly and glittery city lights. One of the best events of
the year, July Fourth, happens during summer. The celebration of July fourth is very extravagant and
glamorous. People gather around to celebrate and watch the display of fireworks. The vibrant colors
and the loud sound of the fireworks are amazing. Overall, summer is just a wonderful season with so
much to offer. The best thing about this time of the year is that everyone is so happy, whereas,
compared to the winter, everyone is

Diverticulitis
Diverticular disease has two separate manifestations. The subtle signs and symptoms of diverticulosis
are important to understand because many people who have this problem are asymptomatic, but often
this diverticular disease can lead to a more serious condition known as diverticulitis. In diverticulosis,
there are diverticula present, but they do not cause any symptoms. In diverticulitis, which will be
discussed in detail, the diverticula are inflamed which can lead to other serious consequences for the
patient (Gramse, 1983). Diverticulitis is a bugling protrusion of a mucous membrane through the wall
of the colon (Marrs, 2006). These saclike or pouch protrusions have the potential to cause
inflammation, obstruction, infection, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Fifteen percent of the remaining patients develop symptoms of their diverticulosis, while the
remaining five percent develop diverticulitis. The symptoms of diverticulosis are often hard to
differentiate and determine because they are often nonspecific symptoms, such as simple abdominal
pain that is relieved by moving their bowels (Marrs, 2006). Once inflammation occurs, the
diverticulosis is progressed to diverticulitis. This inflammation occurs from the large number of
bacteria that target the areas of weakened gastrointestinal wall and combine with undigested foods. It
is still unknown today why some diverticula became inflamed while others do not. There are some
theories surrounding this issue that states the inflammation occurs only when the erosion of the colon
wall is so bad that the body s immune system is unable to protect such a large, disrupted area. In some
cases, the inflammation gets so bad and infection co exists. This combination can result in the
enlargement of the infection, allowing it to extend into the abdomen and become peritonitis when it
infects the lining of the abdomen (Unknown, 2010). Diverticulitis is often classified as either
uncomplicated and mild or complicated and chronic. Regardless of the classification of the disease,
pain is the main symptom. Since diverticulitis occurs most often in the Sigmoid colon, the pain
associated with diverticulitis occurs most often in the lower, left quadrant of

  • 6. The Relationship Between Faith And Reason In The Catholic... Faith and Reason have long been a topic of discussion in the Catholic Church. Some might say that faith and reason contradict each other, but the Catholic church disagrees. In the Catechism of the Catholic church it states, Though faith is above reason, there can never be any real discrepancy between faith and reason. Since the same God who reveals mysteries and infuses faith has bestowed the light of reason on the human mind, God cannot deny himself, nor can truth ever contradict truth. 37 Consequently, methodical research in all branches of knowledge provided it is carried out in a truly scientific manner and does not override moral laws, can never conflict with the faith, because the things of the world and the things of faith derive from the same God. The humble and persevering investigator of the secrets of nature is being led, as it were, by the hand of God in spite of himself, for it is God, the conserver of all things, who made them what they are (CCC 159).The Catholic church teaches that reason is a gift from God, and therefore, all things researched are done through because he is the one who has created the person doing the reasoning. God wants us to use our minds in ways that honor him, and the Catholic church continues to reinforce that this idea of faith and reasoning go together, hand in hand. Faith is having the faith in the system of reason that is used to infer answers from the Bible. The church teaches that there can never be a big difference between the ... • 8. Review Of The War On Malaria THE WAR ON MALARIA JAYME SWANSON BALTIMORE CITY COMMUNITY COLLEGE DR. SAMUEL ODEDOKUN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY II OCTOBER 19, 2014 The War on Malaria About 3.3 billion people, that is about half of the world s population are at risk of contracting malaria (figure 1). Every year there are 250 million cases of malaria, and nearly 1 million deaths. That amounts to 2,732 deaths per day. Out of those million people that die every year, 800,000 of them are African children under the age of 5. To control malaria three actions need to be taken: insecticides need to be used to decrease the vector population, people have to be educated as to how to prevent the vector from reproducing, and anti malarial drugs need to be distributed. To understand the vector and what the vector is, scientists had to first discover what the parasite was and how it worked. It was not until the year 1880 that French Physician Charles Laveran discovered that Malaria was caused by a protozoan in the genus Plasmodium (Malaria, 2013) Figure 1: Malaria endemic areas around the world. Areas where malaria transmission occurs are in red, places that are at risk and malaria transmission occurs infrequently are in yellow, and places in grey is where there is no malaria present (Malaria, 2010). • 9. Examples Of Hero Cycle Of Harry Potter The Hero Cycle of Harry Potter What is a hero s cycle? The hero s cycle is a quest pattern that all heroes (someone who embarks on a quest) follow. The hero s cycle is found in almost all myths, legends and novels. A great example of the hero s cycle could be seen in the novel, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer s Stone. The main character, Harry Potter, goes through three important stages of the cycle, the departure, initiation, and the return stage. Theses stages have subdivisions which not only contributes to the growth of the hero, but also lays out what a hero goes through in order to achieve his/her quest. Joseph Campbell, the founder of the hero s journey precisely lays out each stage and subdivision on what the hero goes through. The hero first starts in the ordinary world where he is used to everything. Harry who lives in the cubby under the stairs, is used to being bullied by his uncle, aunt and his cousin. Harry s journey begins when he gets a mail. This mail is important because Harry has never received a letter before due to the fact that he has no family. As he is opening the envelope Dudley, Harry s cousin, sanches the mail from Harry and gives it to his father, Vernon. Vernon refuses Harry s call to adventure by ripping, burning, and shredding the mail Harry receives. Pope s Rape of the Lock exposes the materialism used in objectifying women, mainly in the upper class societal levels. The whole plot of the story centers around a cosmetic appearance creating an objectified view, as since the lock of hair was cut from a woman s head, the missing lock became, so called, evidence of a man s sexual conquest. Other sexual conquests, forced or not, are spoken with anything but love and only those of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This elevation highly represents the overall theme that materialism plays an almost biblical role in society. The other way to analyze the list is that the Bibles are brought down to the very materialistic level of the other listed cosmetics. Another aspect to note is that Bibles is plainly listed, not the first or last mentioned item, but somewhere in the middle. Both ways conclude that the cosmetic, material items compare at the same level as the Bible s paired along with them. Another list comes with a comparison of paired items that contradict each other s importance; ... Or stain her honor, or her new brocade,/ forget her prayers, or miss a masquerade,/ Or lose her heart, or necklace, at a ball;... (Pope II 106 107). The first description used in each line is something of importance, as staining honor, forgetting prayers or losing her heart all have serious implications and consequences. But then those more serious actions are paired with trivial material ones; staining a new brocade, missing a masquerade or losing a necklace at a ball. The material actions paired with important ones really unify them as being on the same level of importance. The contradiction is removed and materialism is elevated. Objectification of women goes hand and hand with materialism. When Pope speaks of the sexual conquests in The Rape of the Lock, he only focuses on the material aspects that result ... Mars uses words which allude to violence, such as grenade , blade, and bullet to illustrate his deposition to experience physical pain for the girl s affection. He constantly uses these words to indicate that these destructive weapons will not hinder his obsessive love for her. In the chorus, his obsession with the girl is made even more obvious because he proclaims that he would catch a grenade for her, throw his hands on a blade for her, jump in front of a train for her, and take a bullet straight through his brain. His eagerness to make such sacrifices is intentionally detailed in the chorus which, through repetition, places emphasis on these phrases. Author Candice Millard shows readers just how that very incident brought one nation together. This being in the middle of the Gilded Age, at times it looked like the nation had everything under its belt but in reality, people didn t see the corrupt happenings at that time. Through poverty, war, a surprising turn in events, to downright failure in medicine, President Garfield s life was a downward spiral and he wasn t even aware. As much as Garfield was unaware of that, Americans at the time were unaware that they were slowly beginning to unite over the ignorance of both Doctor Bliss and Charles Guiteau. Millard didn t just write a book of a detailed and historic biography, she wrote somewhat effortlessly of the personal yet challenging circumstances Garfield and his family were in and simply told a story. The author really goes in depth and is interested in Garfield s poverty stricken family as a young boy because this is one of the many reasons America adored him so much. As he lost his father, worked endlessly to be able to attend college, became a teacher after just one year, and then going onto congress, he rose up to become the best president the nation has ever had in that short amount of time. These details portrayed about his upbringing, show people how remarkably significant and hardworking this man was. Millard shows that Garfield knew he was brought up to make ... Biblical Genealogy Is Important For Establishing Identity Prior to this passage, Jacob moved his family to this region in Canaan and bought land from Hamor, instead of remaining with Esau and kinfolk (Gen 33:18). The Rule Of The Republic With the constitution of 1532 proclaiming Alessandro de Medici hereditary duke the Republic died, and the Medici family once again rose from the ashes, ending the historical struggle between the Medicean and Republican governments of the Florentine Renaissance. Duke Alessandro de Medici s assassination in 1537 and widespread uncertainty surrounding his inexperienced and young successor, Cosimo de Medici, momentarily rekindled hope for a return of the Republic. However, not only did Cosimo thwart any hope for the return of the Republic, he went on to rule Florence for almost forty years and erect a Grand Dukedom that lasted until the mid 18th century. Propaganda in the form of art played a huge role in the consolidation of the Medici dukedom under Cosimo. The political nuances evident in the visual representations commissioned at this time were vital in the manipulation of the public, the establishment of the Medici as a ducal power and the subversion of Republican ideals. In January 1537, Cosimo was declared the head of Florentine government, however, he was still far from the powerful monarch that he is to become. • 45. What Is My Culture Essay I am familiar with my culture because my grandparents were able to impose their customs onto my parents and their children. Without them I would not be eating traditional foods, celebrating the Hispanic culture, or be aware of my family history. I am 100% Mexican, and I admire the Latin culture to the fullest. The Mexican culture consists of a tight family, plentiful cuisine, Spanish language, Latin music, and the Catholic religion. Growing up in a Mexican household has definitely influenced my morals, values, and character. Although I remain living in a Hispanic household I sometimes forget how important the culture influences the person I am today. In the Mexican culture, we cook with many different spices, vegetables, and meats. Some of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I would visit every day afterschool and it was the best adventure running through multiple gardens with different crops. My grandparents grew cactus, lemons, onions, tomatoes, cilantro, and aloe vera plants. It is a small reminder of their ranch in Zacatecas, Mexico and it is also their getaway from the city. My grandparents grow their own crops because to them it is a hobby, and they are able to sell them when there is an exceeding amount of harvest. Agriculture is common in most Hispanic families, whether it is owning a simple lemon tree or growing a small aloe vera plant, there is always something sprouting. I found it unusual that no matter what oppression we were put through we were still able to preserve our most important customs and values. Many other cultures were stripped of their identities, and till today we are able to pass down our traditions. Learning about how my family traveled from deep into Mexico to Southern California brining their culture with them is amazing. Being able to speak a different language with people that share the same ethnicity reminds me of how special my cultural identity is. • 46. Analysis Of The American Dream In Death Of A Salesman Death of Salesman is a story about an extremely hard working man, named Willy, and his family who are struggling in fulfilling their dreams. In Death of a Salesman, Willy has many conflicting feelings with his jobless son Biff. Throughout the story, Willy believes that success will come to him if he works the hardest he can and by being famous in the spectrum of business and jobs. Biff on the other hand realizes that this is not the way success is achieved and is more angered by his father s delusions towards this idea. In the end of the book, Willy starts to realize that Biff might be correct after all after Willy was fired from his job and decides to commit suicide as a result to get insurance money for Biff to start a business. Willy s unshakeable pride in this belief, also called The American Dream , ultimately led to his demise and most importantly his death. In Death of a Salesman, Arthur Miller uses an illusional tone, repetition, and idiomatic phrases to exemplify the idea that having excessive pride in a certain belief is going to ultimately lead to a person s demise. Arthur Miller uses an illusive tone throughout the story when Willy is discussing the success he had in his past. Although this tone makes it seem like Willy is being treated unjustly because of his previous successes that is not necessarily true. The quote, ... in 1928 I had a big year. I averaged a hundred and seventy dollars a week in commissions (Miller 82) , shows how Willy s belief that he has worked and accomplished too much to be fired by Howard. The statement Willy makes is actually false. In reality he was never this successful and in return shows that he is not that much worth to the firm. This creates an illusive tone because it shows a deceptive memory that was untrue and makes it seem like Willy is being unfairly treated, but in reality is just showing that Willy has too much pride in himself to the point that he remembers things that are untrue, thus alluding back to the purpose that having too much pride in a belief is going to ultimately lead to their demise. Another way Miller shows Willy s excessive pride is when Willy tries to emphasize the wonder of America by saying, ...and that s the wonder, the wonder of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. W.B. Yeats and History Essay Yeats in Time: The Poet s Place in History All things can tempt me from this craft of verse: One time it was a woman s face, or worse The seeming needs of my fool driven land; Now nothing but comes readier to the hand Than this accustomed toil. In these lines from All Things can Tempt Me (40, 1 5), Yeats defines the limitations of the poet concerning his role in present time. These temptations (his love for the woman, Maude Gonne, and his desire to advance the Irish Cultural Nationalist movement) provide Yeats with the foundation upon which he identifies his own limitations. In his love poetry, he not only expresses his love for Gonne, he uses his verse to influence her feelings, attempting to gain her love and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The sword signifies his words, which he holds in the upstairs of his mind. This metaphor gives the words great power. Either on a page or spoken, they can be called upon for battle to violently disrupt the world. However, Yeats is not concrete in presenting this perception as accurate. The last two lines highlight the questioning ?Did not? which begins the previous acclamation of poetic influence. Here the speaker gives a different perspective, saying, Yet would be now, could I but have my wish, / Colder and dumber and deafer than a fish. (9 10). Now, Yeats s vision of the poet is cold, completely lacking passion. He is dumb and therefore unable to influence others with his words. He is deaf and therefore unable to be influenced by the words of others. Many levels of interaction in the present world are taken away from the poet by this image; but, the sense of sight remains. Just as the fish can only survive in water, the poet can only function as an observer. In The Lake Isle of Innisfree (15), Yeats takes this purely perceptive role and places it in the context of time. In the last three lines, the poet says (in the present tense), I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore; / While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements gray/ I hear it in my deep heart s core. (11 12). Throughout these lines, the poet stands completely stationary upon the lifeless pavement, never interacting with his environment. Unlike the deaf fish described in the ... • 49. Diverticulitis Diverticular disease has two separate manifestations. The subtle signs and symptoms of diverticulosis are important to understand because many people who have this problem are asymptomatic, but often this diverticular disease can lead to a more serious condition known as diverticulitis. In diverticulosis, there are diverticula present, but they do not cause any symptoms. In diverticulitis, which will be discussed in detail, the diverticula are inflamed which can lead to other serious consequences for the patient (Gramse, 1983). Diverticulitis is a bugling protrusion of a mucous membrane through the wall of the colon (Marrs, 2006). Fifteen percent of the remaining patients develop symptoms of their diverticulosis, while the remaining five percent develop diverticulitis. The symptoms of diverticulosis are often hard to differentiate and determine because they are often nonspecific symptoms, such as simple abdominal pain that is relieved by moving their bowels (Marrs, 2006). Once inflammation occurs, the diverticulosis is progressed to diverticulitis. This inflammation occurs from the large number of bacteria that target the areas of weakened gastrointestinal wall and combine with undigested foods. It is still unknown today why some diverticula became inflamed while others do not. There are some theories surrounding this issue that states the inflammation occurs only when the erosion of the colon wall is so bad that the body s immune system is unable to protect such a large, disrupted area. In some cases, the inflammation gets so bad and infection co exists. This combination can result in the enlargement of the infection, allowing it to extend into the abdomen and become peritonitis when it infects the lining of the abdomen (Unknown, 2010). Diverticulitis is often classified as either uncomplicated and mild or complicated and chronic. Regardless of the classification of the disease, pain is the main symptom. Since diverticulitis occurs most often in the Sigmoid colon, the pain associated with diverticulitis occurs most often in the lower, left quadrant of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
