Downtown Decorah
Decorah, Iowa, is a small town nestled in the bluffs of beautiful Northeast Iowa about twelve miles
from the Minnesota border. This small town offers a tranquil place whose beauty is unmatched. You
will not lack for things to do in this wonderful place. Phelps Park at sundown provides a wonderful
palette of warm colors that splash over the landscape like a paint on a canvas. Take a walk on the trail,
sit by the waterfall or, watch the sunset from the overlook point. What a great way to end the day!

This makes decorating your bedroom on a budget much easier because you will know what types of
accessories you will need to purchase, rather than buying several items that you like, but don t match.
Once you have picked a theme, remove everything from the bedroom that doesn t match that theme.
Decorating Your Bedroom on a Budget Tip #2: Visit Flea Markets With your new theme in mind, visit
a flea market. A flea market is a wonderful place to find accessories and sometimes even furniture.
Depending on the type of flea market you go to, there may be sellers who focus on one type of item or
there may be sellers who have several different items. Be sure to look closely so that you don t miss
any treasures that would work perfectly with your budget. Decorating Your Bedroom on a Budget Tip

The Environmental Problems Of Marine Pollution
The ocean which covers more than half the surface of our planet is a vital source to life on Earth. It
carries ninety seven percent of Earth s water and surrounds three quarters of the planet. Millions of
different fish and mammals live within the ocean. Today, however, the ocean and all life there is
experiencing serious environmental problems. It has been stated, A staggering amount of waste much
of which has only existed for the past 60 years or so enters the oceans each year (WWF). The causes
of marine pollution are diverse, such as dumping of garbage waste, toxic chemicals, and fertilizers, all
which have caused major damage to our oceans.
A major cause of ocean pollution is the numerous amounts of garbage that is continuing to be dumped
into it. According to Subodh Varma, Over 5.25 trillion plastic particles, with a combined weight of
269,000 tons may be floating in the world s oceans. As the world uses and disposes more materials,
many materials are carelessly thrown into the ocean either by hand or force of nature. The materials
being plastic bottles and or plastic containers carry a heavy impact on habitats in oceans. Plastic in
itself isn t a nature created substance, meaning it won t mix well with the ocean s natural state of
being. A very common problem with plastic being dropped into the ocean is that fish and various sea
creatures will get trapped in small containers, killing them as they struggle to escape. Also, as stated
earlier, plastic is

The Tension Of Racial Separation
The tension of racial separation is a driving factor in Ralph Ellison s Battle Royal . In the early 1940 s
the Deep South decided to create Jim Crow laws in which were intended to prevent blacks from
voting. For the entirety of the narrators life he has being living acceptingly and conforming to these
laws. The narrator states On my graduation day I delivered an oration in which I showed that humility
was the secret, indeed, the very essence of progress. (Not that I believed this how could I,
remembering my grandfather? I only believed that it worked) (228). This quote defines an era in
which blacks were more afraid of disruption then of the corruption surrounding them. After his
graduation day speech he was invited to a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He believed that by beating the narrator he would relieve himself of the pain the white have pushed
upon him. We can see this when the narrator asked why are you fighting me and he responds, For me,
sonofabitch (231). Rather than dispensing his anger upon his oppressor the brute of his attack was at
his own community. This is exactly what the white men wanted. After the fight was over and Tatlock
won the boys were thrown into a group and called over to collect their earnings for the night. To
deepen the wedge separating them they throw the money on a rug. Unknowingly the boys scram in a
frenzy to collect all the pay they can obtain, only to learn that they rug is electrocuted. Once again
they were put at war with each other and struggled to obtain what they all truly wanted. The naked
woman is heavily symbolic of the lack of worth the black community holds during this time period.
She is the apple in the Garden of Eden, the forbidden fruit of America, the item blacks see every day
but will never be allowed to obtain. She is a dream, an everlasting but never obtainable goal. Just the
sight of this never obtainable goal frightens the strongest and bravest of the boys in the room, many
want to run away. All are horrified of what the whites will do if they see them staring at the woman. I
believe that this woman is a symbolism of the blacks frightening away at the sight of an

Essay on Investigate the Water Potential of Potato Cells
Investigate the Water Potential of Potato Cells
Introduction
In my investigation, I hope to determine the water potential of potato cells. The plant material I will
use in my investigation will be potato chips, which I will cut myself prior to the investigation.
I hope to find the concentration of a solution where the chip stays the same mass and length, which
will tell me that the water potential inside the cells is the same as the water potential outside the cells.
Background
Osmosis is defined as the movement of water through a semi permeable membrane. Semi permeable
membranes are permeable to water but impermeable to certain dissolved substances. In the case of this
experiment, the sucrose molecules cannot ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I will measure the length and cross sectional area for each chip.
o Time the chip is left in the solution I think that if I were to leave the chips in the solution for only a
small amount of time there might not be sufficient time for the osmosis to occur, so that the chips
would not differ in size enough for conclusive results. Therefore, I will need to give a good amount of
time for the osmosis to occur.
o Temperature I believe that all reactions happen quicker when there is a higher temperature, so
diffusion across the membrane may be faster at higher temperature.
o Concentration of sucrose solution I think that the lower the concentration of the external sucrose
solution, the more the chip will expand (because the cells become turgid).
o Total Volume of sucrose solution I think that changing the volume of sucrose solution may affect the
results of my investigation.
Variable I will change:
I will change the concentration of sucrose solution in my experiment, because I believe the results of
that experiment will tell me the water potential of the potato cells.
Fair Test
I will carry out all my experiments at the same temperature, 20°C, because that is room temperature,
and I will not have to heat up anything. I will cut my chips to the same dimensions every time, using a
ruler, and a sharp knife (for accuracy) to

Slave Women in Harriet Jacobs Incidents in the Life of a...
Slave Women in Harriet Jacobs Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl and Toni Morrison s Beloved
Slavery was a horrible institution that dehumanized a race of people. Female slave bondage was
different from that of men. It wasn t less severe, but it was different. The sexual abuse, child bearing,
and child care responsibilities affected the females s pattern of resistance and how they conducted
their lives. Harriet Jacobs Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, demonstrates the different role that
women slaves had and the struggles that were caused from having to cope with sexual abuse.
Growing up as a slave Jacobs was constantly exposed to sexual abuse from her master. She was forced
to learn what it meant to be a slave that was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When she wanted to escape into freedom, her bonds to her children were so great that it was hard for
her to leave them. Jacobs couldn t stand the suppression and constant abuse of her master. She couldn
t leave her children. Her grandmother told her, Stand by your children, and suffer with them till death.
Nobody respects a mother who forsakes her children: and if you leave them, you will never have a
happy moment. (Jacobs, 417)
The slave women s choices in life were not limited to her happiness, but she had to think about her
children. A mother had different responsibilities that she had to deal with. By having to deal with
sexual abuse and thinking about children women were less able to leave their chains and people
behind. According to Deborah Gray White in Aren t I a Women? , ...for those fugitive women who left
children in slavery, the physical relief which freedom brought was limited compensation for the
anguish they suffered. (White.62) Recent DNA test results that have concluded that the Nation s third
president, Thomas Jefferson fathered at least one child, Eston Hemings, with his slave, Sally Hemings.
The study has shed new light on the aged debate, forcing society and historians to recognize what had
previously been ignored. Although America is obsessed with race, our society does not recognize the
central role slavery has played in the nation s development. The continued and persistent effort to

Juliet and Lady Capulet s expression of their view on love displays fundamental opposites in ideology
compared to Romeo and Benvolio s. Romeo s character presents itself throughout the act as limited
towards a thirsty, headstrong perspective regarding love and beauty. He previously believed that
Rosaline is the only beauty he can discern, and that he is not able to recognize or love any other
beauties . As the title suggests, Rosaline does not cease to be Romeo s true love. His coz moves to

Toxic Leadership In Special Forces (SF)
Toxic leadership can develop within Special Forces (SF) because of concern for compromising
command authority and because the personality profile of a toxic leader can be mistaken as type A
personality that thrives in SF.
LTG Ulmer fully discusses the Army s concern of compromising command authority and how that can
foster toxic leaders. SF is susceptible to toxic leadership for this same reason. A sergeant major will
crush a group of teammates who try to solve their toxic leadership issue through collective mutiny.
The military is a top down driven organization and chain of command is more important to maintain
than removal of one toxic leader.
I witnessed this firsthand when a team sergeant, who was toxic, came to my ODA just prior ... Show

seemed to be receptive in the moment and was even appreciative. Unfortunately in the weeks

The Microsoft Surface Pro 3
The Surface Pro 3 has officially been launched at Microsoft s event today, in New York. The most
recent expansion to the group of Windows 8 fueled gadgets from the company has emphatically run
bigger with a 12 inch screen, gotten a considerable measure more slender at 9.1mm and moderately
lighter at 800g, for its size. This will officially succeed the Surface Pro 2, which was simply a repeat
of the first, with upgrades primarily under the hood, and obviously, the kick stand. The Surface Pro 3
then again, is practically an entire new device, with a movement in thoughts and it is in fact pushing
the message of a smart phone substitution a considerable measure harder this time. How? Here is a
promo video to get you upto speed, and do go past the break for all the new increases, point by point
detailed in text
Microsoft have actualized a huge amount of changes to drive that message forward. Lets begin with
the screen. There is presently another bigger 12 inch screen, with a 3:2 aspect ratio and a 2160×1440
resolution. This is apparently a 2k color calibrated display, which has the same focal points as a
Surface Pro 2 screen, regarding correctness. The aspect ratio is a bit non standard however Microsoft
claims one can have more substance on this screen, instead of say, a 13 inch screen with a 16:9
resolution. Abnormally enough, the tablet doesn t look excessively tall either, with the picture
introduction being given a nod with a start button on the right. In the

Shiloh, By Bobbie Ann Mason
Shiloh , by Bobbie Ann Mason, explores an interesting theme, the distinct parallel between the surface
level of what the events of the story are, and the meaning underneath. This parallel is seen throughout
the story, from the start when Leroy Moffitt is building craft kits for at first just to pass time, while
Norma Jean is lifting weights and working at a Rexall drugstore for the same reason; To later on when
Norma says she doesn t know what she s talking about and Leroy thinks that the way to saving his
marriage is to come up with a last minute idea. The story engages the theme of the parallel levels
through the unstable marriage of Leroy and Norma Jean. The theme of this parallel is shown overtly
through the images, descriptions, and characterizations of the log cabins in the story, and of Shiloh.
Interestingly, the characters and the world they live in are stuck on the surface, shown through how
both Leroy and Norma Jean drift on subjects, and through the names in the story.
Norma Jean and Leroy s marriage shows an insight on the theme in action because of how their lack
of understanding the inner workings of marriage, which causes them to drift apart and eventually
separate. One of the most important things in marriage is the ability to communicate, but neither of
them are able to do so on a meaningful level. An example of this is when Norma Jean starts to explain
why she wants to leave him, then as she walks away she takes back what she said, adding No, it

Weaknesses And Strengths Of The President George W Bush
To be a leader is no easy task. You are faced with complex decisions that affect others wellbeing, and
sometimes lives. The leader with the single most responsibility for others would be the President.
Therefore, analyzing his decision regarding 9/11 are a very daunting task. However, from a
managerial standpoint I plan to examine his strengths and weaknesses, the alternative resources he
utilized, and decision making strategies. Former President George W Bush has a ton of strengths. He
is a well educated man, and the first president to obtain an MBA degree from Harvard Business
School in 1975. On multiple occasions, he was calm and collected. The very first one being when he
first found out about the attacks on the world trade centers, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

It is because of being surrounded by such people that he can then trust them enough to handle difficult
tasks; therefore, enabling him to delegate necessary work. When a colleague was asked about his
leadership style he confirmed Bush is a delegator who leans heavily on trusted advisors (Roberto,
Cariogia 2002). When he can delegate he creates a support system to help him with decisions. He also
gave staff a lot of room to grow; by not getting bogged down with details. By giving the staff some
freedom to brainstorm on their own, he can trust them to add to a goal he has in mind. This also
requires him to be an avid listener, and not always just talk. This allows for more time for thought, and
fair consideration of everyone s ideas. As far as things Bush could improve upon, from a managerial
standpoint, there is not many. There are only two things that come to mind. One, was his ability to be
influenced by what I believe was deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz s opinion to invade
Iraq. While Bush chose to wait a brief amount of time before doing that, I do believe he allowed
someone else s agenda to be push to the forefront. Second, along those same lines, I believe because
he trusted others so much he did not do his own amount of due diligence. It is the leader s
responsibility to make sure information obtained is accurate, and trustworthy, before using it to make a
decision. These are the

Introduction
In this paper, I am going to talk about Acute Stress Disorder and how it affects the daily lives of
people who have it. What exactly is Acute Stress Disorder? According to Steve Bressert, a doctor in
philosophy, ASD is:
Acute Stress Disorder is characterized by the development of severe anxiety, dissociative, and other
symptoms that occurs within one month after exposure to an extreme traumatic stressor (e.g.,
witnessing a death or serious accident). As a response to the traumatic event, the individual develops
dissociative symptoms. Individuals with Acute Stress Disorder have a decrease in emotional
responsiveness. (Bressert, 2016)

ASD in Adults
It is known that 80% of adults in the United States have experienced trauma at least once in their lives.
I simply cannot imagine an adult going through this, but it must be more difficult for children to
overcome it. It is not common for older adults to develop ASD, as they have most likely learned how
to cope with stressful events. Experiencing a traumatic event at a young age can most likely lead to
developing ASD in adulthood. ASD in adulthood can easily develop into a more complex
psychological disorder known as PTSD. A treatment that can help adults is Cognitive Behavioral
Therapy, which can reduce the trauma. This treatment is usually used and is more effective in children
rather than adults. Another type of treatment is Eye Movement Desensitisation and reprocessing,
(EMDR). EMDR is a type of therapy treatment that can help people recover from their emotional
distress in life. This type of therapy has been proven to be very effective in most cases, and is still
used.
ASD in Children
According to the website Minddisorders.com, children do in fact suffer from ASD, but not as much as
adults do. For example:
Very little is known about the prevalence of ASD or PTSD in children, and even less is known how
effectively medications and psychotherapy treat these disorders in this age group. There are as yet no
standardized screens or diagnostic interviews in widespread use for assessing either ASD or PTSD in
children, although a Child Post Traumatic

The Hobbit By J. R. Tolkien
People like stories that contain much action and adventure. Such stories are real exciting and fun to
read. The Hobbit By J. R. Tolkien is able to convey a great story through its characters, thematic
elements, and literary features. There is something however, that is able to have a major effect on a
story. That is supernatural events. These events are something within a story that the common
audience would not firstly expect to occur. It is of these happenings that make a story that little more
interesting and fun to read, as these events are able to change a story majorly. Supernatural events are
able to be associated with numerous things in stories. Such events that are out of the ordinary are to
leave readers in wonder why it happened. Also, how such event occurred can be of question too. In
The Hobbit, there is a character who is a prime cause of some of the supernatural events that occur in
the story. That character is Gandalf, a friendly wizard who s magic powers is able to help the dwarves.
In Chapter 6 of the Hobbit, there was a disturbance in the Misty Mountains forest area. This area is
usually peaceful. What is this uproar in the forest tonight? Said the lord of eagles (Tolkien, 96).
Surely, something awry was likely to occur. And of course, the suspicions of something going on in
the area were correct. The goblins then encircled all the dwarves and the forest caught fire. All except
Gandalf were trapped. It was up to Gandalf to save the dwarves. Gandalf,

The Dangers Of Genetic Engineering
Genetic engineering is known for it controversial issues such as playing God yet the media has been
keen on sugar coating the benefits on new genetic innovations. People have glossed over the dangers
that it is providing toward inequalities in society. Although Genetic engineering can benefit to those in
the lower class to an extent, the Government needs to limit the potential inequalities genetic
modification is doing toward society.
For those of you who don t know what genetic engineering is and how it works here is some
background information. There are several forms of genetic testing and we will focus on two,
molecular and chromosomal genetic tests, which test for genetic mutations likewise. Molecular
genetic tests allow doctors to see if the patient s DNA has a mutation that can lead to a genetic disease
such as Tay Sachs caused by the body s inability by DNA mutation. Chromosomal tests allow doctors
to look at the chromosomes to determine if there is a mutation such as an extra chromosome that will
lead to genetic diseases like Down Syndrome caused by containing an extra chromosome. Through In

The Security And Exchange Commission
The Security and Exchange Commission Introduction The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission
s essential obligation is to ensure protection for investors and keep up the quality of the securities
markets. The laws and standards that administer the securities business in the United States get a basic
idea: all investors, whether vast organizations or private people, have to have admitted to certain
essential facts around a venture before getting it. The Security and Exchange Commission requires
open organizations to unveil significant money related and other data to people in general. The
Security and Exchange Commission likewise regulates stock trades, brokers, financial advisors,
shared assets, and open utility holding organizations. Their essential worry here is promoting exposure
of sensitive data, authorizing the securities laws, and ensuring financial specialists. The viability of the
Security and Exchange Commission pivots upon its implementation power. Every year the SEC brings
between 400 500 common authorization activities against people and organizations that infringe upon
the securities laws. A portion of the common infractions incorporates insider exchanging, bookkeeping
misrepresentation, and giving false or misdirecting data about securities and the organizations that
issue them. Creation They set up the Security and Exchange Commission in 1934. Its motivation was
to apply the recently passed securities laws, to advance dependability in the business sectors

The Benefits of Sin Revealed in The Scarlet Letter
According to Nathaniel Hawthorne in The Scarlet Letter, each of us is born with original sin we have
inherited from the misdeeds of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. As Eve bit hungrily into the
apple from the Tree of Knowledge, starving for wisdom, little did she know that the entire human race
would thereafter be tainted by her sin. Hawthorne and many others believe that ever since, human
beings have been inclined to evil, more likely to disobey than to act in a godly manner. This is a
faithless, cynical view of humanity, but one perhaps justified by the actions of Hester Prynne and the
Reverend Dimmesdale. Sin seems to be an inevitable factor in their lives; though ... Show more

Questioning would have thrown their world into turmoil. They liked simple, written laws. Laws of the
heart were unimportant; after all, how could one live by laws that were not even verbalized or written
in any way? Puritan society was so rigid, so strict, that other rules were not even considered. Hester s
sin comes from her refusal to ignore that other set of rules: the rules of her soul. I read about Hester s
predicament and think, She was following her heart. How is being true to herself a sin? But in the 17th
century in Puritan America, the individual did not create rules. Society did. Granted, the structure and
laws of society are needed to some extent in order to prevent chaos. But some matters are not the
business of government. Hester s sin should have been private, if it had been a sin at all in her eyes.
She could not escape societal laws, though, and her sin darkened in her eyes and made her ashamed.
It is no wonder that Hester is so confused by her sin and its implications, because her guilt is
contradictory in and of itself. The scarlet letter she wears, the symbol of her sin, and her little daughter
Pearl, the product of her sin, remind her every day of how she has done wrong. And yet, in some
mysterious way, these marks of sin save her from other sins. Pearl, though looked upon by others as a
devilish child, is perhaps a gift to Hester. Without Pearl,

Abstract
Abortion is the Answer: The Debate of Legalizing Abortion
When did abortion become legal? In the mid nineteenth century in the United States, abortion was not
allowed to any women only if they had a permission from a doctor stating that giving birth has a risk
on their life. In nineteen sixty, a movement was made to legalize abortion which consisted of feminist
groups; which they viewed abortion ban laws as opposing women s rights that consisted of their career
and social life (Siegel, 2014). According to Levine et al. (1996, as citied in Davido, 2009), five states

Module 1 Assignment
Please answer below two questions, using an essay format.
Question 1 Using HIV/AIDS as an example to discuss why public health authorities need to conduct
public health surveillance and to describe how surveillance system is managed in Australia (9 marks)
(Up to 800 words)
Public health surveillance is defined as the ongoing systematic collection, collation, analysis and
interpretation of outcome specific data for public health purposes, closely integrated with the timely
dissemination of public health information for assessment and public health response for preventing
and controlling disease as necessary (Thacker Stroup; Thacker et al.1994; World Health Assembly,
2005). The surveillance method used for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and human
Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infections in Australia is similar to these methods used for other
diseases, aiming at reducing high risk behaviors, lowering the incidence of transmission and infection.
Firstly, the surveillance system for HIV/AIDS draws a unique epidemiological picture of magnitude
and trends in the prevalence of infection, resource allocation, targeted groups and risk behavior over
time. It describes the pattern of transmission of HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis, and other specific sexually
transmissible infections. Secondly, It monitors an information cycle for collection and exchange
between different public health institutions between clinical and laboratory facilities, infection

Methodology, Metrics and Measures for Testing and Evaluation of an Integrated Sensor Architecture
1. Introduction {NEED ISA BACKGROUND/MISSION CONTENT} ISA is one element within an
active area of research in the design and development of tools to improve the situational awareness of
military commanders involved in battlefield operations. Evaluating the effectiveness of tools proposed
for introduction into the battlespace requires the use of realistic command tasks and an appropriate
research methodology that controls for task difficulty. Typical evaluations, if they occur at all,
frequently do not employ proper experimental (or quasi experimental) methodology and address only
qualitative elements of evaluation (e.g. user ratings). In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
2. Objective The objectives of this report are to: Present possible research methodologies and designs
that may be applied to support ongoing analysis and evaluation of ISA tools and products. Present
concepts and describe factors to be considered in developing a useful set of task difficulty
considerations to support evaluation and testing of ISA tools. Propose an initial set of behavioral, task
based performance measures that are focused on specific areas of performance that ISA is designed to
impact. 3. Research Methodology 3.1 Overview Concerns about research methodology relate to the
constraints of testing ISA tools and products in real world settings. It is challenging to design and
carry out a controlled experiment with rigorous experimental and control groups. Therefore,
evaluation validity is put at risk by factors such as: Are selected tasks representative of battlefield
command activities in general? Can task difficulty be effectively taken into account or controlled

Conflict Between Palestine And Israel
Demolitions, since 1967, Israel has demolished more than 26,000 Palestinian owned structures in the
occupied Palestinian territory. Additionally, between 1967 and 2011 over 14,000 Palestinians had their
residency rights in Jerusalem revoked and have thus permanently lost their right to live in or even visit
the city of their birth. The disruption of life as normal has a drastic influence the cultural
underpinnings of the nation. Very different from their former life, Israel now has legal control over
their holdings and they live constantly wary of further negative influence ...in addition to the official
300 meter restricted access area, Israeli forces conduct regular raids one and two kilometers into Gaza
and constantly monitor all areas up to two kilometers into Gaza. The land included in the restricted
access area accounts for 17 percent of the total Gaza land area and includes 35 percent of Gaza s
agricultural land. These problems do not simply breed bad feelings between the nations now but the
constant state of tension between Palestine and Israel creates a long lasting state of aggression in the
future generations which facilitate more violence and chaos than before. Research conducted by Save
the Children UK in 2009 found that up to 70 percent of all households living near the restricted access
area had been displaced at least once since 2000 . Now, children are being shifted from their homes
and stability to an unstable climate. As these social issues became

The Caricature Of Mrs. Bennet In Pride And Prejudice
In Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen uses various characters to make observations about British society
in the eighteenth century through satire, irony, and character development. Mrs. Bennet is one of the
more boisterous and transparent characters in the novel, who plays a key role in Austen s critiques of
British society. Austen creates a caricature of Mrs. Bennet. Mrs. Bennet is portrayed as irrational,
nervous, and hysterical to highlight how the pressure of motherhood and British societal expectations
in the eighteenth century can affect one s priorities and mental state.

their circumstance in life. Wives were expected to manage all of the ... Show more content on

Bennet cares for her children deeply and worries about their futures constantly. She is also
consistently laughed at and criticized by members of her family and community. Mrs. Bennet s daily
trials and stresses have caused her to become a frail, nervous and laughable character. Frequently
throughout the novel , Mrs. Bennet expresses her stresses to her family: You delight in vexing me. You
have no compassion on my poor nerves (Austen 7). Her stresses are often caused by her husband s
trying sarcasm and wit, or by the fate of her daughters. Because the majority of her happiness is based
on the welfare of her daughters, when her youngest elopes with an unsuitable man she becomes
extremely distraught and emotional. She is in a dreadful state and has such tremblings, such
flutterings, all over [her] (Austen 278 279). Mrs. Bennet s nerves and emotions accentuate the
weakness that was attributed to women and mothers in the eighteenth century. Additionally, the
suppressive role as mother and wife which Mrs. Bennet is placed into is the source of her anxiety and
neuroses. This is ironic because Mr. Darcy, Mr. Bennet, and other residents of Merryton judge Mrs.
Bennet because of her neurotic and superficial attributes, yet they are members of the society that has
forced her into her role as a

Buck And White Fang Comparison
A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself. (Josh Billings) This is
certainly true of two famous dogs in American literature: Buck and White Fang, who have a lot of
similarities, but many differences.
In the beginning of their stories, both Buck and White Fang are similar but also different. First, both
get kidnapped and made into sled dogs. For example, Buck gets kidnapped by Manuel and sold to be a
sled dog and White Fang gets trapped by Gray Beaver and becomes a sled dog. Since, both dogs
become sled dogs, this is a similarity they share. Second, White Fang and Buck are both mixed breeds.
For instance, Buck is half Saint Bernard and half Scotch Shepherd, White Fang is half Husky and half
Wolf. Since ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Thornton when he is almost beaten to death by his owner; White Fang is saved by Jack Conroy when

Second, they are also different because they fall in love with their new owners at different times after
being saved. For instance Buck is saved by John Thornton and instantly falls in love with him, But
White Fang is hesitant of Jack Conroy when he saves him, and it takes him a little longer to fall in
love with Jack. Since, Buck and White Fang fell in love with the person that saved them at different
times, Last, White Fang and Buck are also the same because both dogs saved their good owners. For
example, when Jack s gold mine caved in and he was buried with rocks, White Fang saves him by
moving the rocks off of him; and when John Thornton is drowning Buck saves him by pulling him out
of the water. Since they both did a heroic thing and saved their masters they are the same in this ways.

Personal Narrative about Skiing Essay
The coat of armor I adorned, made of down feathers and a nylon shell, yielded no protection against
the daggers of that cold winter air. As I peered out toward the horizon, I saw nothing but tree tops, and
some snow capped mountain tops in the distance. With my feet bound to freshly waxed skis, the only
thing stronger than my ski poles was my determination to get down the mountain.
I turned to my right, only to see the immediate drop off of the ski slope. As I crept up a little closer to
the edge, I noticed an incline that before now was only known to me through pictures of cliff diving,
or an exaggerated road runner and coyote cartoon.
With a deep breath of that icy cold air that seemed endless at the time, I pushed myself off the ... Show

in hopes to avoid the oncoming danger, that devil dressed in the needles of a blue spruce.
As my upper body shifted to the right, everything from my waist and below stayed true to the course,
including the ski poles. I ran over the handle of my ski pole, with my stomach. The pole was pushed
up into my lower abdomen, propelling me off of the slope entirely, I was airborne. I landed on my
back, completely out breath, and dazed to the point I had no recollection of where I was. The next
moment was particularly scary for me, all I can recall was the ringing of a whistle in my ear, and the
red lights flashing from the ski patrols snowmobiles. Unsure of any injuries, the ski patrol had braced
my back and neck, strapped me to a board, and began to tow me down the mountain.
I spent the next three hours in the lodge under the watchful eye of a very pleasant paramedic, who
prescribed me the perfect blend of warm blankets and hot chocolate. The throbbing pains finally

Mass Migration to America During the 19th Century
This essay will address the reasons as to why there was mass migration to the United States of
America during the nineteenth century. As for this topic, the reasons for the mass migration was due to
industrialisation and employment and living standards, and thus many migrants traveled to America
with the hope of a better life. By saying that the reasons for the mass migration are primarily due to
industrialisation and employment and living standards, it is important to emphasize that the migrants
destination of America was better than remaining in their origin country. With all of this considered,
this essay will examine the roles of industrialisation and employment and living standard in the
decision to migrate to the United Sates of America during the nineteenth century. The potential reach
of this essay needs to be specified at the outset by identifying the migrants, whom traveled to America.
In the nineteenth century, the type of migrants can be broken into two periods, the early part of the
century, and the later half of the century. In the first half of the century, the migrants were primarily
farmers and artisans from rural areas, who traveled with family, and intended to acquire land and settle
permanently, whereas, in contrast, the migrants from the later half of the century were drawn from
urban areas with nonagricultural occupations, yet, in comparison, all the migrants were typically
unskilled and young, whom had limited schooling and training (Hatton,

Manual Labour Movement Essay
The independent educational action of 1826 through 1876 emphasized the rise of the manual labor
movement and mechanics institutes. The contributions of several educational leaders and their
importance to the teaching field and vocational education are discussed. Other represented
achievements from the Morrill Act, the Hampton Institute, and the Kalamazoo Case are discussed and
their significance in the history of vocational education.
The Manual Labor Movement
During the early 1800 s, different schools served different functions. Mechanic s Institutes combined
practice with the study of science. Lyceums attended to cultural as well as educational needs and
aroused interest in agricultural and industrial education. The manual labor movement attempted to
meet the needs of the farmer, mechanic, vocational education, and a way of satisfying a practical need
of a population. In addition, Manual Labor Academies included academic studies as well as time
working in a shop. The Education committee felt this combination of studies and labor contributed to
the development of a better citizen. The combination of labor and education created a strong base for
vocational education. Although the manual labor movement lost momentum by the time of the Civil
War, it had set in motion significant developments concerning education of women, agricultural ...

Discuss the extent to which recent reforms to murder in...
Discuss the extent to which recent reforms to murder in the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 are a
change for the better but have not necessarily satisfied those who campaigned for change. [50]
Loss of control is a partial defence to a charge of murder. If it is successful, D will be found guilty of
manslaughter. This allows the judge discretion in sentencing. Loss of control replaced the former
defence of provocation. This law is set out in s54 of the Coroners and Justice Act 2009. The old
defence of provocation was abolished by s56 CJA 2009. Under the new law, if D wants the defence to
be successful, they need to have lost self control, there must be a qualifying trigger and a person of the
same sex and age should react in the same way ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The second situation arises where D s long term alcohol/drug abuse has led to a recognised medical
condition (such as alcohol or drug dependence syndrome) which causes an abnormality of mental
functioning. (R v Wood). Giving the judgement of the court, Sir Igor Judge explained that the jury
must first consider whether the defendant s syndrome was of such an extent and nature that it
constituted an abnormality of mind induced by illness or disease. If they decided it was, they must
then consider whether the defendant s mental responsibility at the time was substantially impaired by
the syndrome.
The Law Commission had proposed removing the loss of control criteria completely. This was
because it was recognised that women in abusive relationships may kill from a combination of anger
fear, frustration and a sense of desperation. The government decided not to follow this proposal. D
must prove loss of self control. The only concession is that loss of control need not be sudden. It is
probable that some abused women will not be able to use the defence.
Sexual infidelity is no longer allowed as a qualifying trigger for the defence. Yet the defence of
provocation was largely created for such situations and also widely biased towards men. If someone
finds their partner cheating, they are very likely to lose self control, but if this leads to D killing V,
they will no longer have a partial defence to a charge of murder. Surely that contradicts the aim

The Four Temperaments Of The Keirsey Sorter
Describe the four temperaments of the Keirsey Sorter
The Keirsey Temperament Sorter (KTS) is a self assessed questionnaire that is intended to help people
understand the personality of others and themselves. Embracing the ideas of ancient Greeks, Keirsey
developed the Temperament Sorter. He was intrigued by the work Kretschmer and Sheldon in the late
1940s, which comprised of the study of the human physique and criminality (Kretschmer, 1970).
Finally, Keirsey was introduced to the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) in the late 50 s and
developed the modern temperament sorter, known at the Keirsey Temperament Sorter (Keirsey, 1994).

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)

however, mental illnesses show few physical symptoms and cause problems that outsiders can rarely

person has five of the following symptoms: a depressed mood, diminished pleasure, weight loss or
gain, insomnia, lethargy, problems with concentrating, fatigue, feeling worthless, or having thoughts

Genetic predisposition is an important part of the formation of mental illnesses. Mental illnesses and
depression often onset early in life due to the amount of stress and genetic predisposition. Specifically,
the SERT gene regulates serotonin in the body (Parks 30). Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that affects
mood, behavior, and memory. A neurotransmitter helps to relay messages to other areas of the body
through neurons, nerve cells, that are placed throughout the body. A neurotransmitter either inhibits or
excites messages through the body, such as pain or other feelings. The brain produces serotonin, which
is then spread throughout the body via the blood vessels. According to David Myers, the formula for
depression is a traumatic or important life stressor plus a variation on a serotonin controlling gene
(Myers 10). When serotonin production is imbalanced, sleep problems and irritability have a high
chance of occurring, which are linked to the onset of depression. Low serotonin levels trigger
depression after a traumatic event occurs (Parks 30). When the SERT gene is mutated, the risk for
depression increases. Variations in neurotransmitters and the genes that produce them, especially
serotonin and the SERT gene, lead to the development of depression when serotonin production is
imbalanced or

* Leapfrog strategy This strategy involves bypassing the enemy s forces altogether. In the business
arena, this involves either developing new technologies, or creating new business models. This is a
revolutionary strategy that re writes the rules of the game. The introduction of compact disc
technology bypassed the established magnetic tape based defenders. The attackers won the war
without a single costly battle. This strategy is very effective when it can be realized.
Defensive marketing warfare strategies They are a type of marketing warfare strategy designed to
protect a company s market share, profitability, product positioning, or mind share. Fundamental
principles: 1. Always counter an attack with equal or greater force. 2. Defend every important market.
3. Be forever vigilant in scanning for potential attackers. Assess the strength of the competitor. 4. The
best defense is to attack yourself. Attack your weak spots and rebuild yourself anew. 5. Defensive
strategies should be the exclusive domain of the market leader
The main types of defensive marketing warfare strategies are: * Position defense This involves the
defense of a fortified position. This tends to be a weak defense because you become a sitting duck . It
can lead to a siege situation in which time is on the side of the attacker, that is, as time goes by the
defender gets weaker, while the attacker gets stronger. In a business context, this involves

The Need For Intravascular Catheters Are Evidently Clear
The need for intravascular catheters are evidently clear in modern day medical practices especially in
the intensive care setting (ICU). Despite the necessity of such catheters, their use places patients at
risk of developing complications such as infections, thrombophlebitis, endocarditis and a variety of
other metastatic infections. In the hospital setting an estimated 250,000 bloodstream infections (BSI)
associated to CVC occur annually, thus the need for proper aseptic skin care. The widely used
antiseptic for cleansing CVC sites in the United States was iodine. However several studies have
shown that cleansing CVC sites with 2% aqueous chlorhexidine gluconate lowered BSI when

Define the Scope of the EBP
According to the CDC an approximate 80,000 BSI cases occur in ICUs annually in the United States,
with an estimated 250,000 cases in hospitals as a whole. The mortality rate associated in this case is
around 12 25% per infection, causing a cost of $25,000 per episode for the health care system. In this
writers facility aseptic techniques are emphasized, including the use of chlorhexidine instead of
iodine. The impact of BSI via CVC are not only patient centered but cost the healthcare system an
approximate $34,508 $56,000 per case to treat each infection.
Stakeholders
Members that would be included on the team to prevent CVC associated BSI are the physician whose
responsibility is to ensure proper procedures and practices are carried out during insertion, such as

placement of the tube using X Ray imaging. After insertion and confirmation of placement then the

People cannot live in a place if it is not safe. Therefore, declining population in the cities is a natural

of their types, causes, and effects to reduce them.
First of all, I would like to clarify the types of crimes in our society. There are three kinds of crimes:
Personal Crimes, Property Crimes, and Cybercrimes. Personal crimes are violent crimes that result in
physical, emotional, or psychological harm to the victim depending on state laws (Shoener). Also,
there are many kinds of personal crimes. The first one is assault and beating. Although assault and
beating are two personal crimes, many states merge them into the one crime of assault and beating
because most of the assault crimes are punctuated by beating and violence to the victim for
threatening him or her. The second is homicide: it is the ugliest form of crime because of the loss of
life whether intentionally or unintentionally. In a homicide, it doesn t matter what the tool is. Whether
by weapon, fist or poison, the punishment will be the same dose no matter what kind of tools they
used. The third kind of personal crime is sexual abuse, often referred to as molestation. It is defined as
the undesirable touching of another, in a sexual manner, without approval. Sexual abuse

Single Parents And Single Parent Families
During the years, single parent families have become a more common thing. This is starting to
become a problem, because family dynamics can really influence a child s life. According to studies it
affects not only the child but the parents too.
For most people, the home life can affect how you act everyday, this is no different for children and
school. The stress from home is shown to affect a child s school life. Research has shown that children
that live with a single parent score less than children with two parents, on average, with measurements
of educational achievements. The reason why children usually do worse than kids with both parents, is
because the single parent must work. Therefore is not home to help with homework. Parents also
provide the child with emotional support, encouragement and everyday assistance. So, if there is only
one parent, then the child is only receiving half of the previously stated things compared to children
with two parents. These things can affect a person at any school level. Over 57 percent of children
who live with both parents enter college. Compared to the 32.5 percent of children who have single
parents that enter college. This is just one way that single parenting can affect a child s life.
Another way growing up in a single parent household can affect a child s life. Some children of single
parents tend to develop some hard feelings towards a parent or in some cases both parents. These
feelings include anger, sadness or happiness. A reason why a child might feel anger is because the may
not like one parent for not helping out and being there in their life, or might blame the parent for their
challenges in life. They might feel sadness from not be able to have both parents in their life fully.
However, they might just find happiness from their parents splitting up. Maybe their parents just
weren t not getting along. The happiness may come from the feeling of relief, knowing that their
parents can t argue anymore. Children will take the situation differently. However, no matter which
feeling the feel, hardships are to come.
Children of a single parent might feel a little different from their fellow classmates. Which is
understandable with some of the things they

Weaknesses
Like with all new technology ventures we are not without risks. It is a growing field filled with
competition. Our competition, who has more resources, is as well entering the market. Our size
difference can work to our advantage and given the right corporate culture we too can grow to an
immense size.
The technology can be and will be improved every day. Continuous testing and research and
development will keep us ahead of the curb as well as having the right people to engineer solutions.
As a small firm taking on big industry we expect the reward to be great. The fact that our brand has
not been around for generations will be a hurdle to get across. Good business is good business and if

where it is now on the global market. We will then go into the specific strategies employed by
Hyundai to make it a global competitor. We will then follow with a particular issue that Hyundai faces
and the solution we feel best addresses that issue.

Joint venture on the other hand is when two or more companies come together and use their resources
for a single activity that is not related to the companies that are in the joint venture. Last but not least,
a wholly owned subsidiaries is one in which the parent company owns 100% of the subsidiary s stock.
There are four international competitive strategies that include: global standardization, localization,
transnational, and international. Global standardization is a business model based on pursuing a low
cost strategy on a global scale. Localization, on the other hand is a strategy that is focused on
increasing profitability by customizing the company s goods or services so that the goods provide a
favorable match to tastes and preferences in different national markets. Moving on transnational
strategy, which is a business model that simultaneously achieves low cost, differentiates the product
offering across geographic markets, and fosters a flow of skills between different subsidiaries in the
company s global network operations. Last of the international competitive strategies is the
international strategy which involves making products at home, while leaving other functions to
foreign business units.
Now that we have finished discussing and defining the strategies, we will now analyze some of the
specific strategies used by Hyundai.

The Midnight Riders
The story of the midnight ride is one of controversy, many wonder who was the one to actually deliver
the message, and which is the most important. All those who journeyed on the midnight ride were
equally important because its story lives in infamy. Charles J. Caes, the author of the article Midnight
Riders, argues that Samuel Prescott is the most important and underrated midnight rider. Caes also
argues that Prescott should receive more credit than the others who joined him on the ride. In actuality,
Prescott is not as brave and heroic as Caes makes him out to be. The things that Samuel Prescott had
accomplished before the midnight ride are not as impressive as Caes makes them out to be. Also, The
fact that Samuel was the one to complete the mission is not as important as the bravery it takes to even
go on the mission. Those that choose their fate are more heroic than those who stumble upon it.
Samuel C. Prescott possesses the same amount of courage as any ordinary man can. Caes chose to
describe Samuel Prescott s retreat from the British as heroic. He used words to create a valiant image,
such as, swashbuckling and daredevil like, in order to pursue his audience (Caes 42). When Charles J.
Caes story is stripped of its frills and opinions, this event is of Prescott fleeing from the British scared
like a gnat in a spider web. Samuel Prescott did not ride, a steed that that flies fearless and fleeting, as
Paul Revere did (Longfellow 76). This quote is more reliable it

Essay on Women in Ministry
Women have been involved in Christian ministry since the very beginning of Christianity. It has
declined and risen according to the acceptance of the environment. The two papers addressed in this
essay document the rise of women ministers in the Holiness movement as well as the decline of
women in the modern Pentecostal movement. In response to this decline in women in ministry,
Courtney Stewart gave points which the UPCI should tackle to rectify the situation. In Holy Boldness
Women Preachers Autobiographies and the Sanctified Self, the history of women in ministry is
addressed. The excerpt given starts by discussing the pioneers of women ministers Wesleyan/Holiness
groups. It was in the Holiness movement in the late 19th ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The second paper, written by David Norris, focuses mainly on the history of Pentecostal women in
ministry. He gave a brief mention to the emergence of Holiness women preachers, and then fast
forwards to the Pentecostal movement. Because many of the people involved in the Pentecostal
movement had once been a part of the Holiness movement, women were generally accepted as
ministers. However, even here women were relegated to the margins. They took the broken, burnt out,
run down churches that no one else wanted. Many times these women would revitalized a run down
church only to step down, or be shunted aside, so a man could take over as pastor. According to
Norris, at the founding of the UPCI nearly 22% of the licensed ministers were women. This number
has steadily declined over the past 50 years until only 3% of the licensed ministers are women. Norris
gives four possible reasons for this: 1. Because women did not learn how to theologically defend their
position at the beginning of the movement, they do not know how now that the climate has changed to
where they must defend their calling. 2. There were many more denominations involved in the
Pentecostal movement than just the Holiness groups who were not willing to license women. 3. There
are little or no role models who promote women in

Written On The Banks Of The Arun By William Wordsworth...
The hustle and bustle of modern day prevents people from truly contemplating the meanings of their
life. People nowadays have little time to become one with nature and detach themselves from
technology. Two poets who captured the beauty of connecting with nature are Charlotte Smith and
William Wordsworth. Smith in her piece Written on the Banks of the Arun describes in a cold and
melancholy manner what she experiences near the Arun bank. Meanwhile, Wordsworth in his piece
Lines Composed a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey describes in a peaceful tone his feelings while
sitting near the Banks of the Wye. Both Smith and Wordsworth pieces contain similar underlying
meaning, symbolism, imagery, and setting.
First, the intention of Smith and Wordsworth are to emphasize the beauty of nature and the
pleasantness one feels when secluding themselves in the arms of Mother Nature. The natural scenery
give Smith comfort since she expresses that it allows her to be alone and simply contemplate life. The
bank of Arun in a sense is her safe haven because it permits her with the calming rise and fall of the
waves to also release unwanted thought and welcome new thoughts. Smith emphasizes her enjoyment
of the solitude she experiences when surround by nature. Similarly, Wordsworth explains that the only
thing keeping him sane while enclosed in the busy city was the memories of the landscape. Nature has
transformed his way of thought and has made him realize that it nature is connected to

Bite Movie Comparison
I knew going in that I was going to love The Curse / Curse II: The Bite Double Feature from Scream
Factory, based solely on the little blurb on the back of the case, which reads A Double Dose Of 80s
Horror! . Anyone that actually reads my site knows I have an unhealthy affection towards 80s horror
films, so when the cover is screaming out that these are two 80s horror gems, how can you not end up
loving them. Loving them is exactly what happened when watching this Double Feature, but in my
complete and utter surprise, I ended up enjoying the second movie Curse II: The Bite way more than
The Curse, two films that have nothing in common save a name. I ll get into exactly what I enjoyed
the sequel better, but for now, let s get on with the review of the first movie... PRODUCT

Frankly, I didn t see much of an issue with the transfer, save for a few rough scenes taking place in a
hospital, which had some wear and tear present. Besides that, the transfer was fairly solid. The same
goes for The Curse, which keeps a lovely grainfield intact, but still has some nice solid blacks. As for
the audio, which is DTS HD Master Audio Stereo for both, it s a bit on the low side in Curse II s case,
resulting in having to turn up the speakers a bit higher than usual, but overall, the sound was clean and
clear for both movies. The only feature, which really shouldn t be considered a feature is a trailer for
The Curse, which has the a pretty epic voice over speech from that trailer voice guy. I ve seen a few
things online about some behind the scenes clips for the special effects work on Curse II: The Bite, so
I m not entirely sure why this couldn t be included on this disc. It s a shame really, as I would have
loved to see some of the details that went into those gory scenes. BLU RAY SPECIAL FEATURES

Women s Fashion During The Great Depression
Fashion during the Great depression was very different from before because poor people struggled and
used cheap resources as clothing, men s fashion was pointed towards the job they worked, and women
s fashion was practical, yet simple. Poor families had to use their resources to make necessities for
them to live, like clothes. Clothing in poor families were usually made from flour sacks. Women
during the Depression had an elegant style, yet made cheaper and more practical for the work they do
to survive. Men always looked sharp, but their pieces were usually made of cheaper fabrics to save
money because of the depressing loses during the difficult times. There were many styles for different
families, working women, and men with specific needs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Men went overseas and women worked more during WWII after the Depression (Eberhardt). Clothes
for men was a lot more fashionable than it was in the 20 s, unlike women (Tucker). Although, the
colors were like the women s because they were still dark and plain (Sessions). Men were said to be
overdressed for all occasions in this decade (Tucker). It was popular for men too to have very athletic
build and looked good in a v neck coat with very broad shoulders. Men wore plain white button downs
for a regular, everyday outfit, or also for under a suit because men sweat a lot at work (Tucker).
Younger men usually wore sweaters to make their own fashion statement. Everything a man wore was
usually worn with tall, high waisted pants. They were easy and looked good with just about any outfit.
They usually cuffed the bottom of their pants if they wanted to go for a more casual look. Another
fashion statement for a guy was to wear a fedora almost everywhere. Gangsters wore suits with a
monogrammed shirt, and always a fedora. Men just picked up on that style for everyday. Shoes for
men were very simple. They were always nice looking with a toe cap and looked similar to bowling
shoes. They always wore bright socks to make a statement since their outfits and shoes were very
plain. For men in the evening,

Kidney And Corne Aquaporin Analysis
Aquaporin: Structure and Role in Kidney and Cornea
The isolation of aquaporin helped many scientists to determine the nature of aquaporin as a water
channel protein and work out how water transport occurs across membrane.
Structure of Aquaporin
Aquaporin consists of a tetramer (Verkman et al, 2014) and each monomer has a single aqueous pore
that allows water transportation and prevents proton transfer (Agre et al, 2002). There is an
extracellular and cytoplasmic vestibule in each monomer which connects to a central amphipatic pore
region that has a hydrophilic (α carbonyl groups) and hydrophobic surface that helps preventing
permeation of larger molecules (Verkman et at, 2014). There are six membrane domains in each
aquaporin that then form ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The cornea is part of the ocular surface system and is of vital importance to maintain its slightly
dehydrated state (Gipson, 2007). The cornea consists of layered structures as shown in Figure 3.
Corneal epithelium consists of three layers of superficial, wing and basal cells and is the main
refractive site of the eye and is constantly bathed by water (tears) secreted from lacrimal glands
(Schey et al, 2014). Keratocytes are scattered among a network of collagen fibrils which are spaced in
the stroma is important in maintaining the transparency of the cornea (ibid). The endothelium layer is
immersed in an aqueous humor and gives access to fluid and nutrients for the cornea (ibid). Changes
in the corneal water volume will change the length and spacing of stromal collagen fibrils which later
affects the transparency of the cornea (ibid). Both AQP5 and AQP1 are the major channels for water
transport across the corneal epithelium and endothelium (ibid). AQP5 is responsible for water
transport across the corneal epithelium onto the ocular surface due to the high osmotic pressure of the
tear film (ibid). AQP1 facilitates water transport across the corneal endothelium and together with
epithelial AQP5, maintains the slightly dehydrated and transparent stromal layer of the eye

Homeland Security Agencies
The first essay question in the final assignment asks students to discuss the capabilities and limitations
of intelligence in supporting homeland security efforts. Intelligence matters have greatly improved on
this front compared to the way things used to be prior to the September 11th terror attacks, but there
are areas that still need to be addressed. The Department of Homeland Security has also helped get
information to the field by creating fusion cells, the (JCAT), and encouraging the use of intelligence
based policing. Intelligence sharing was one of the biggest obstacles the nation had prior to the 9/11
attacks. Federal agencies, competing for budgetary funding, had no incentive to share any information

Congress, in an attempt to address the shortfalls in our counterterrorism system, drafted the USA
PATRIOT Act. The law did close many policy gaps, but it also unintentionally infringed upon the civil
liberties of the very citizens it was designed to protect. The most contentious parts of the act were the
changes in search warrant procedures, unlimited access to records, and wiretap procedures. The act
allowed law enforcement and intelligence personnel to request sneak and peek warrants, meaning that
they were allowed to enter into a suspect s home without informing him/her that they were being
investigated. Intelligence personnel say this is needed to avoid alerting a terrorist cell s members of an
investigation, but critics claim that this process could also be used against non terrorism suspects. The
USA Freedom Act did not remove this controversial provision once it was signed into law last

Isolation And Cognition, By Octavia Butler And Philip Jose...
Literature is not as one dimensional as many people think. It is not a frivolous study for those who are
poor at math and science. No, literature is a conduit that connects an individual to the vast, ever
expanding pool of human knowledge. In addition to connecting us to the past and improving our
writing skills, literature widens our perspectives allowing us to explore the strengths as well as the
faults of human individuals and societies. Some genres of literature are better than others when
exploring human nature, and science fiction is one of the best. Darko Suvin, author of an analysis on
science fiction titled Estrangement and Cognition, assets that all science fiction introduces a new idea,
called a novum, that effectively challenges a reader s worldview. It can educate us about other cultures
and increase sympathies for those who we see as different from us simply by giving us exposure to
what is foreign. Authors Octavia Butler and Philip José Farmer both use cognitive estrangement in this
way to suggest and reinforce the idea that humans are too resistant to change, and are inherently
xenophobic.
It is important to understand how science fiction is used to convey an author s ideas. In a nutshell,
Darko Suvin delineates science fiction as a literary genre that utilizes cognitive estrangement in order
to build an imaginary, yet believable, world centered around a novum (Suvin 7 8). He further defines
estrangement as the creative and fantastic side of the genre. The

Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML)
Acute Myeloid Leukemia is also known to be called AML and is the most common form of all acute
leukemias out there. AML is generally an older person s disease and it is uncommon in people under
the age of 45 while the average age for a person with this disease is 68 years of age. AML is much
more common in men than women and the risk of both male and female being diagnosed with acute
myeloid leukemia is less than half of one percent. AML is rare in the diagnosis and it is estimated for
the year 2018 for new patients to be diagnosed with AML is about 19,520 this is mostly in adults. The
deaths that are estimated for the year 2018 is 10,670 with AML and almost all will be adults. It is said

Rudolf Virchow, a German pathologist in 1856, was the first to use the term leukemia which is taken
from the Greek word meaning white blood he first described the abnormal excess of white blood cells
in patients with the clinical syndrome. Myeloid was first used by Newmann in 1869, he was the first
to recognize that white blood cells were made in the bone marrow and not by the spleen as everyone
had believed originally. 1889, Wilhelm Ebstein, used the term acute leukemia to show the difference
between the quick progressive and fatal leukemias to those of chronic leukemias. In 1900, Naegeli
was the first person to characterize the myeloblast which is the malignant cell in the AML. He was
able to divide the leukemias into two separate categories lymphocytic and myeloid. 2008 was a big
year as AML was the first cancer genome which is a haploid set of chromosomes in the gamete or in a
multicellular organism to be sequenced fully to extract DNA from leukemic cells where they were
able to compare the affected cells with normal cells. They found that leukemic cells had acquired
mutation in several of genes that had not previously been associated with acute myeloid

Abortion And Abortion
Abortion is a serious ethical dilemma. The practice is not a recent one, there being evidence of the
procedure dating back several millennia and neither is the controversy that comes with it, with records
of laws regulating abortion appearing in texts and manuscripts from a range of civilizations
throughout the years. There has been much debate over whether abortion is a morally sound practice,
and the divisive nature of the issue has resulted in centuries of contention. Many notable figures and
organizations have made use of numerous religious, legal, and ethical standpoints to develop positions
for and against abortion. This essay will be taking a look at abortion through the lens of two normative
ethical theories: Utilitarianism and Deontology, as understood through John Stuart Mill s
Utilitarianism and Immanuel Kant s Groundwork of the Metaphysic of Morals respectively.
Utilitarianism is an ethical theory that claims that the best action one can perform is the one that
brings about the most pleasure, happiness or utility. Utilitarianism is extremely consequentialist in
nature, focusing solely on the results of one s actions and not on intentions or other notions of ideas
such as justice or humanity. There are two main branches of utilitarianism: act utilitarianism and rule
utilitarianism. Act utilitarianism essentially states that whether an action is right or wrong depends on
its particular consequences. Rule utilitarianism states that whether an action is right or wrong depends
in part on similar actions, and how those actions promote pleasure/happiness. Rule utilitarianism came
about as a response to criticisms of act utilitarianism, which claimed act utilitarianism was not feasible
as an ethical theory in that it would be impossible to make decisions that actually promote the greatest
utility in every instance one is required to act. Rule utilitarians believe that instead of making an
individual judgement and decision based on anticipated utility when faced with a situation, it would be
better to establish general rules to follow that, when followed, typically reap the greatest utility. Both
rule utilitarianism and act utilitarianism would presumably have different takes on whether abortion is

  • 3. The Environmental Problems Of Marine Pollution The ocean which covers more than half the surface of our planet is a vital source to life on Earth. It carries ninety seven percent of Earth s water and surrounds three quarters of the planet. Millions of different fish and mammals live within the ocean. Today, however, the ocean and all life there is experiencing serious environmental problems. It has been stated, A staggering amount of waste much of which has only existed for the past 60 years or so enters the oceans each year (WWF). The causes of marine pollution are diverse, such as dumping of garbage waste, toxic chemicals, and fertilizers, all which have caused major damage to our oceans. A major cause of ocean pollution is the numerous amounts of garbage that is continuing to be dumped into it. According to Subodh Varma, Over 5.25 trillion plastic particles, with a combined weight of 269,000 tons may be floating in the world s oceans. As the world uses and disposes more materials, many materials are carelessly thrown into the ocean either by hand or force of nature. The materials being plastic bottles and or plastic containers carry a heavy impact on habitats in oceans. Plastic in itself isn t a nature created substance, meaning it won t mix well with the ocean s natural state of being. A very common problem with plastic being dropped into the ocean is that fish and various sea creatures will get trapped in small containers, killing them as they struggle to escape. Also, as stated earlier, plastic is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the early 1940 s the Deep South decided to create Jim Crow laws in which were intended to prevent blacks from voting. For the entirety of the narrators life he has being living acceptingly and conforming to these laws. The narrator states On my graduation day I delivered an oration in which I showed that humility was the secret, indeed, the very essence of progress. (Not that I believed this how could I, remembering my grandfather? I only believed that it worked) (228). We can see this when the narrator asked why are you fighting me and he responds, For me, sonofabitch (231). Rather than dispensing his anger upon his oppressor the brute of his attack was at his own community. This is exactly what the white men wanted. After the fight was over and Tatlock won the boys were thrown into a group and called over to collect their earnings for the night. To deepen the wedge separating them they throw the money on a rug. Unknowingly the boys scram in a frenzy to collect all the pay they can obtain, only to learn that they rug is electrocuted. Once again they were put at war with each other and struggled to obtain what they all truly wanted. The naked woman is heavily symbolic of the lack of worth the black community holds during this time period. She is the apple in the Garden of Eden, the forbidden fruit of America, the item blacks see every day but will never be allowed to obtain. She is a dream, an everlasting but never obtainable goal. Just the sight of this never obtainable goal frightens the strongest and bravest of the boys in the room, many want to run away. All are horrified of what the whites will do if they see them staring at the woman. I believe that this woman is a symbolism of the blacks frightening away at the sight of an ... Essay on Investigate the Water Potential of Potato Cells Investigate the Water Potential of Potato Cells Introduction In my investigation, I hope to determine the water potential of potato cells. The plant material I will use in my investigation will be potato chips, which I will cut myself prior to the investigation. I hope to find the concentration of a solution where the chip stays the same mass and length, which will tell me that the water potential inside the cells is the same as the water potential outside the cells. I will measure the length and cross sectional area for each chip. o Time the chip is left in the solution I think that if I were to leave the chips in the solution for only a small amount of time there might not be sufficient time for the osmosis to occur, so that the chips would not differ in size enough for conclusive results. Therefore, I will need to give a good amount of time for the osmosis to occur. o Temperature I believe that all reactions happen quicker when there is a higher temperature, so diffusion across the membrane may be faster at higher temperature. o Concentration of sucrose solution I think that the lower the concentration of the external sucrose solution, the more the chip will expand (because the cells become turgid). o Total Volume of sucrose solution I think that changing the volume of sucrose solution may affect the results of my investigation. Variable I will change: I will change the concentration of sucrose solution in my experiment, because I believe the results of that experiment will tell me the water potential of the potato cells. Female slave bondage was different from that of men. It wasn t less severe, but it was different. The sexual abuse, child bearing, and child care responsibilities affected the females s pattern of resistance and how they conducted their lives. Harriet Jacobs Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, demonstrates the different role that women slaves had and the struggles that were caused from having to cope with sexual abuse. Nobody respects a mother who forsakes her children: and if you leave them, you will never have a happy moment. • 11. Shiloh, By Bobbie Ann Mason Shiloh , by Bobbie Ann Mason, explores an interesting theme, the distinct parallel between the surface level of what the events of the story are, and the meaning underneath. This parallel is seen throughout the story, from the start when Leroy Moffitt is building craft kits for at first just to pass time, while Norma Jean is lifting weights and working at a Rexall drugstore for the same reason; To later on when Norma says she doesn t know what she s talking about and Leroy thinks that the way to saving his marriage is to come up with a last minute idea. The story engages the theme of the parallel levels through the unstable marriage of Leroy and Norma Jean. The theme of this parallel is shown overtly through the images, descriptions, and characterizations of the log cabins in the story, and of Shiloh. Interestingly, the characters and the world they live in are stuck on the surface, shown through how both Leroy and Norma Jean drift on subjects, and through the names in the story. Norma Jean and Leroy s marriage shows an insight on the theme in action because of how their lack of understanding the inner workings of marriage, which causes them to drift apart and eventually separate. One of the most important things in marriage is the ability to communicate, but neither of them are able to do so on a meaningful level. The leader with the single most responsibility for others would be the President. Therefore, analyzing his decision regarding 9/11 are a very daunting task. However, from a managerial standpoint I plan to examine his strengths and weaknesses, the alternative resources he utilized, and decision making strategies. Former President George W Bush has a ton of strengths. He is a well educated man, and the first president to obtain an MBA degree from Harvard Business School in 1975. When a colleague was asked about his leadership style he confirmed Bush is a delegator who leans heavily on trusted advisors (Roberto, Cariogia 2002). When he can delegate he creates a support system to help him with decisions. He also gave staff a lot of room to grow; by not getting bogged down with details. By giving the staff some freedom to brainstorm on their own, he can trust them to add to a goal he has in mind. This also requires him to be an avid listener, and not always just talk. This allows for more time for thought, and fair consideration of everyone s ideas. As far as things Bush could improve upon, from a managerial standpoint, there is not many. There are only two things that come to mind. One, was his ability to be influenced by what I believe was deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz s opinion to invade Iraq. While Bush chose to wait a brief amount of time before doing that, I do believe he allowed someone else s agenda to be push to the forefront. Second, along those same lines, I believe because he trusted others so much he did not do his own amount of due diligence. It is the leader s responsibility to make sure information obtained is accurate, and trustworthy, before using it to make a decision. These are the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In This Paper, I Am Going To Talk About Acute Introduction In this paper, I am going to talk about Acute Stress Disorder and how it affects the daily lives of people who have it. What exactly is Acute Stress Disorder? According to Steve Bressert, a doctor in philosophy, ASD is: Acute Stress Disorder is characterized by the development of severe anxiety, dissociative, and other symptoms that occurs within one month after exposure to an extreme traumatic stressor (e.g., witnessing a death or serious accident). As a response to the traumatic event, the individual develops dissociative symptoms. Individuals with Acute Stress Disorder have a decrease in emotional responsiveness. ASD in Adults It is known that 80% of adults in the United States have experienced trauma at least once in their lives. I simply cannot imagine an adult going through this, but it must be more difficult for children to overcome it. It is not common for older adults to develop ASD, as they have most likely learned how to cope with stressful events. Experiencing a traumatic event at a young age can most likely lead to developing ASD in adulthood. ASD in adulthood can easily develop into a more complex psychological disorder known as PTSD. A treatment that can help adults is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which can reduce the trauma. This treatment is usually used and is more effective in children rather than adults. Another type of treatment is Eye Movement Desensitisation and reprocessing, (EMDR). EMDR is a type of therapy treatment that can help people recover from their emotional distress in life. This type of therapy has been proven to be very effective in most cases, and is still used. ASD in Children According to the website Minddisorders.com, children do in fact suffer from ASD, but not as much as adults do. For example: Very little is known about the prevalence of ASD or PTSD in children, and even less is known how effectively medications and psychotherapy treat these disorders in this age group. There are as yet no standardized screens or diagnostic interviews in widespread use for assessing either ASD or PTSD in children, although a Child Post Traumatic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Tolkien is able to convey a great story through its characters, thematic elements, and literary features. There is something however, that is able to have a major effect on a story. That is supernatural events. These events are something within a story that the common audience would not firstly expect to occur. It is of these happenings that make a story that little more interesting and fun to read, as these events are able to change a story majorly. Supernatural events are able to be associated with numerous things in stories. Such events that are out of the ordinary are to leave readers in wonder why it happened. Also, how such event occurred can be of question too. In The Hobbit, there is a character who is a prime cause of some of the supernatural events that occur in the story. That character is Gandalf, a friendly wizard who s magic powers is able to help the dwarves. In Chapter 6 of the Hobbit, there was a disturbance in the Misty Mountains forest area. This area is usually peaceful. What is this uproar in the forest tonight? Said the lord of eagles (Tolkien, 96). Surely, something awry was likely to occur. People have glossed over the dangers that it is providing toward inequalities in society. Although Genetic engineering can benefit to those in the lower class to an extent, the Government needs to limit the potential inequalities genetic modification is doing toward society. For those of you who don t know what genetic engineering is and how it works here is some background information. There are several forms of genetic testing and we will focus on two, molecular and chromosomal genetic tests, which test for genetic mutations likewise. Molecular genetic tests allow doctors to see if the patient s DNA has a mutation that can lead to a genetic disease such as Tay Sachs caused by the body s inability by DNA mutation. The Security And Exchange Commission The Security and Exchange Commission Introduction The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission s essential obligation is to ensure protection for investors and keep up the quality of the securities markets. The laws and standards that administer the securities business in the United States get a basic idea: all investors, whether vast organizations or private people, have to have admitted to certain essential facts around a venture before getting it. The Security and Exchange Commission requires open organizations to unveil significant money related and other data to people in general. The Security and Exchange Commission likewise regulates stock trades, brokers, financial advisors, shared assets, and open utility holding organizations. Their essential worry here is promoting exposure of sensitive data, authorizing the securities laws, and ensuring financial specialists. The viability of the Security and Exchange Commission pivots upon its implementation power. Every year the SEC brings between 400 500 common authorization activities against people and organizations that infringe upon the securities laws. A portion of the common infractions incorporates insider exchanging, bookkeeping misrepresentation, and giving false or misdirecting data about securities and the organizations that issue them. The Benefits of Sin Revealed in The Scarlet Letter According to Nathaniel Hawthorne in The Scarlet Letter, each of us is born with original sin we have inherited from the misdeeds of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. As Eve bit hungrily into the apple from the Tree of Knowledge, starving for wisdom, little did she know that the entire human race would thereafter be tainted by her sin. Hawthorne and many others believe that ever since, human beings have been inclined to evil, more likely to disobey than to act in a godly manner. This is a faithless, cynical view of humanity, but one perhaps justified by the actions of Hester Prynne and the Reverend Dimmesdale. Sin seems to be an inevitable factor in their lives; though ... Laws of the heart were unimportant; after all, how could one live by laws that were not even verbalized or written in any way? Puritan society was so rigid, so strict, that other rules were not even considered. Hester s sin comes from her refusal to ignore that other set of rules: the rules of her soul. I read about Hester s predicament and think, She was following her heart. How is being true to herself a sin? But in the 17th century in Puritan America, the individual did not create rules. Society did. Granted, the structure and laws of society are needed to some extent in order to prevent chaos. But some matters are not the business of government. Hester s sin should have been private, if it had been a sin at all in her eyes. She could not escape societal laws, though, and her sin darkened in her eyes and made her ashamed. It is no wonder that Hester is so confused by her sin and its implications, because her guilt is contradictory in and of itself. The scarlet letter she wears, the symbol of her sin, and her little daughter Pearl, the product of her sin, remind her every day of how she has done wrong. And yet, in some mysterious way, these marks of sin save her from other sins. Pearl, though looked upon by others as a devilish child, is perhaps a gift to Hester. Without Pearl, ... By saying that the reasons for the mass migration are primarily due to industrialisation and employment and living standards, it is important to emphasize that the migrants destination of America was better than remaining in their origin country. If they decided it was, they must then consider whether the defendant s mental responsibility at the time was substantially impaired by the syndrome. The Law Commission had proposed removing the loss of control criteria completely. This was because it was recognised that women in abusive relationships may kill from a combination of anger fear, frustration and a sense of desperation. The government decided not to follow this proposal. D must prove loss of self control. The only concession is that loss of control need not be sudden. It is probable that some abused women will not be able to use the defence. Sexual infidelity is no longer allowed as a qualifying trigger for the defence. Yet the defence of provocation was largely created for such situations and also widely biased towards men. Mental illnesses and depression often onset early in life due to the amount of stress and genetic predisposition. Specifically, the SERT gene regulates serotonin in the body (Parks 30). Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that affects mood, behavior, and memory. A neurotransmitter helps to relay messages to other areas of the body through neurons, nerve cells, that are placed throughout the body. A neurotransmitter either inhibits or excites messages through the body, such as pain or other feelings. The brain produces serotonin, which is then spread throughout the body via the blood vessels. According to David Myers, the formula for depression is a traumatic or important life stressor plus a variation on a serotonin controlling gene (Myers 10). When serotonin production is imbalanced, sleep problems and irritability have a high chance of occurring, which are linked to the onset of depression. Low serotonin levels trigger depression after a traumatic event occurs (Parks 30). When the SERT gene is mutated, the risk for depression increases. First of all, I would like to clarify the types of crimes in our society. There are three kinds of crimes: Personal Crimes, Property Crimes, and Cybercrimes. Personal crimes are violent crimes that result in physical, emotional, or psychological harm to the victim depending on state laws (Shoener). Also, there are many kinds of personal crimes. The first one is assault and beating. Although assault and beating are two personal crimes, many states merge them into the one crime of assault and beating because most of the assault crimes are punctuated by beating and violence to the victim for threatening him or her. The second is homicide: it is the ugliest form of crime because of the loss of life whether intentionally or unintentionally. In a homicide, it doesn t matter what the tool is. • 40. Single Parents And Single Parent Families During the years, single parent families have become a more common thing. This is starting to become a problem, because family dynamics can really influence a child s life. According to studies it affects not only the child but the parents too. For most people, the home life can affect how you act everyday, this is no different for children and school. The stress from home is shown to affect a child s school life. Research has shown that children that live with a single parent score less than children with two parents, on average, with measurements of educational achievements. The reason why children usually do worse than kids with both parents, is because the single parent must work. Therefore is not home to help with homework. Parents also provide the child with emotional support, encouragement and everyday assistance. So, if there is only one parent, then the child is only receiving half of the previously stated things compared to children with two parents. These things can affect a person at any school level. Over 57 percent of children who live with both parents enter college. Compared to the 32.5 percent of children who have single parents that enter college. This is just one way that single parenting can affect a child s life. Another way growing up in a single parent household can affect a child s life. Some children of single parents tend to develop some hard feelings towards a parent or in some cases both parents. These feelings include anger, sadness or happiness. A reason why a child might feel anger is because the may not like one parent for not helping out and being there in their life, or might blame the parent for their challenges in life. They might feel sadness from not be able to have both parents in their life fully. However, they might just find happiness from their parents splitting up. Maybe their parents just weren t not getting along. The happiness may come from the feeling of relief, knowing that their parents can t argue anymore. Children will take the situation differently. However, no matter which feeling the feel, hardships are to come. Children of a single parent might feel a little different from their fellow classmates. According to the author, these type of people are becoming more active in more countries than they were years ago. All those who journeyed on the midnight ride were equally important because its story lives in infamy. Charles J. Caes, the author of the article Midnight Riders, argues that Samuel Prescott is the most important and underrated midnight rider. Caes also argues that Prescott should receive more credit than the others who joined him on the ride. In actuality, Prescott is not as brave and heroic as Caes makes him out to be. The things that Samuel Prescott had accomplished before the midnight ride are not as impressive as Caes makes them out to be. Also, The fact that Samuel was the one to complete the mission is not as important as the bravery it takes to even go on the mission. Those that choose their fate are more heroic than those who stumble upon it. Samuel C. Prescott possesses the same amount of courage as any ordinary man can. Caes chose to describe Samuel Prescott s retreat from the British as heroic. He used words to create a valiant image, such as, swashbuckling and daredevil like, in order to pursue his audience (Caes 42). When Charles J. Caes story is stripped of its frills and opinions, this event is of Prescott fleeing from the British scared like a gnat in a spider web. The second paper, written by David Norris, focuses mainly on the history of Pentecostal women in ministry. He gave a brief mention to the emergence of Holiness women preachers, and then fast forwards to the Pentecostal movement. Because many of the people involved in the Pentecostal movement had once been a part of the Holiness movement, women were generally accepted as ministers. However, even here women were relegated to the margins. They took the broken, burnt out, run down churches that no one else wanted. Many times these women would revitalized a run down church only to step down, or be shunted aside, so a man could take over as pastor. According to Norris, at the founding of the UPCI nearly 22% of the licensed ministers were women. This number has steadily declined over the past 50 years until only 3% of the licensed ministers are women. Norris gives four possible reasons for this: 1. Because women did not learn how to theologically defend their position at the beginning of the movement, they do not know how now that the climate has changed to where they must defend their calling. 2. There were many more denominations involved in the Pentecostal movement than just the Holiness groups who were not willing to license women. 3. • 46. Written On The Banks Of The Arun By William Wordsworth... The hustle and bustle of modern day prevents people from truly contemplating the meanings of their life. People nowadays have little time to become one with nature and detach themselves from technology. Two poets who captured the beauty of connecting with nature are Charlotte Smith and William Wordsworth. Smith in her piece Written on the Banks of the Arun describes in a cold and melancholy manner what she experiences near the Arun bank. Meanwhile, Wordsworth in his piece Lines Composed a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey describes in a peaceful tone his feelings while sitting near the Banks of the Wye. Both Smith and Wordsworth pieces contain similar underlying meaning, symbolism, imagery, and setting. First, the intention of Smith and Wordsworth are to emphasize the beauty of nature and the pleasantness one feels when secluding themselves in the arms of Mother Nature. The natural scenery give Smith comfort since she expresses that it allows her to be alone and simply contemplate life. The bank of Arun in a sense is her safe haven because it permits her with the calming rise and fall of the waves to also release unwanted thought and welcome new thoughts. Smith emphasizes her enjoyment of the solitude she experiences when surround by nature. Similarly, Wordsworth explains that the only thing keeping him sane while enclosed in the busy city was the memories of the landscape. Kidney And Corne Aquaporin Analysis Aquaporin: Structure and Role in Kidney and Cornea The isolation of aquaporin helped many scientists to determine the nature of aquaporin as a water channel protein and work out how water transport occurs across membrane. Structure of Aquaporin Aquaporin consists of a tetramer (Verkman et al, 2014) and each monomer has a single aqueous pore that allows water transportation and prevents proton transfer (Agre et al, 2002). There is an extracellular and cytoplasmic vestibule in each monomer which connects to a central amphipatic pore region that has a hydrophilic (α carbonyl groups) and hydrophobic surface that helps preventing permeation of larger molecules (Verkman et at, 2014). • 51. Isolation And Cognition, By Octavia Butler And Philip Jose... Literature is not as one dimensional as many people think. It is not a frivolous study for those who are poor at math and science. No, literature is a conduit that connects an individual to the vast, ever expanding pool of human knowledge. In addition to connecting us to the past and improving our writing skills, literature widens our perspectives allowing us to explore the strengths as well as the faults of human individuals and societies. Some genres of literature are better than others when exploring human nature, and science fiction is one of the best. Darko Suvin, author of an analysis on science fiction titled Estrangement and Cognition, assets that all science fiction introduces a new idea, called a novum, that effectively challenges a reader s worldview. It can educate us about other cultures and increase sympathies for those who we see as different from us simply by giving us exposure to what is foreign. Authors Octavia Butler and Philip José Farmer both use cognitive estrangement in this way to suggest and reinforce the idea that humans are too resistant to change, and are inherently xenophobic. It is important to understand how science fiction is used to convey an author s ideas. In a nutshell, Darko Suvin delineates science fiction as a literary genre that utilizes cognitive estrangement in order to build an imaginary, yet believable, world centered around a novum (Suvin 7 8). He further defines estrangement as the creative and fantastic side of the genre. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 53. Abortion And Abortion Abortion is a serious ethical dilemma. The practice is not a recent one, there being evidence of the procedure dating back several millennia and neither is the controversy that comes with it, with records of laws regulating abortion appearing in texts and manuscripts from a range of civilizations throughout the years. There has been much debate over whether abortion is a morally sound practice, and the divisive nature of the issue has resulted in centuries of contention. Many notable figures and organizations have made use of numerous religious, legal, and ethical standpoints to develop positions for and against abortion. This essay will be taking a look at abortion through the lens of two normative ethical theories: Utilitarianism and Deontology, as understood through John Stuart Mill s Utilitarianism and Immanuel Kant s Groundwork of the Metaphysic of Morals respectively. Utilitarianism is an ethical theory that claims that the best action one can perform is the one that brings about the most pleasure, happiness or utility. Utilitarianism is extremely consequentialist in nature, focusing solely on the results of one s actions and not on intentions or other notions of ideas such as justice or humanity. There are two main branches of utilitarianism: act utilitarianism and rule utilitarianism. Act utilitarianism essentially states that whether an action is right or wrong depends on its particular consequences. Rule utilitarianism states that whether an action is right or wrong depends in part on similar actions, and how those actions promote pleasure/happiness. Rule utilitarianism came about as a response to criticisms of act utilitarianism, which claimed act utilitarianism was not feasible as an ethical theory in that it would be impossible to make decisions that actually promote the greatest utility in every instance one is required to act. Rule utilitarians believe that instead of making an individual judgement and decision based on anticipated utility when faced with a situation, it would be better to establish general rules to follow that, when followed, typically reap the greatest utility. Both rule utilitarianism and act utilitarianism would presumably have different takes on whether abortion is a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
