Reflection on Domestic Violence s Intersection with Various Social Problems
PennyWise is a resale store affiliated with the Fort Bend Women s Center in Sugar Land, TX. This
organization works to advocate and provide resources for women and children who are victims of
domestic abuse. Their mission statement is:
The Fort Bend Women s Center empowers survivors of domestic or sexual violence and their
children to achieve safety, heal and begin a new independent and self sufficient life, while also
striving to prevent violence against women (Fort Bend).
Volunteers for the Fort Bend Women s Center fulfill a number of roles in their retail store,
PennyWise. In my service, I worked to help the staff organize and sort the various donations that
they received that were inundating their warehouse. Working with PennyWise exposed me to an
entirely different perspective than I was previously familiar with as I have always been insulated
away from people in such a situation. I found that the employees, women who were victims of
domestic violence trying to get back on their feet again, faced an array social problems that
severely affected every aspect of their lives. Several of the most notable social problems that I
observed intersecting with domestic violence were poverty/class inequality, gender, and race.

On March 4, 1998, near Pitkin, Louisiana, a Bulk Third stage separator in a Facility owned by
Sonat Exploration co. exploded, causing around $200,000 worth of damage to equipment and
resulted in 4 deaths. The process utilised two wells, where one was located 2 miles (3.2kms) away.
In order for ideal production, the pipelines needed to be purged to remove the air as the air was
purged it was unable to escape to the atmosphere, resulting in over pressurisation within the tanks
which were unaccounted for, resulting in rupturing of the tank, releasing flammable material which
in present with any ignition source ignited resulting in a large fireball.

purge gas could vent out. The purge gas could have vented out through the block valve 14 and 15,
however they remained closed (See Figure 2). A Block valve does not replace a pressurerelief
system but can contribute to the division of the separator and the storage tanks. As a result of the
valves remaining closed, there was a build up of high pressure purge gas within the vessel. Hence
leading to one aspect of the failure. Whilst designing the system, Sonat considered the third stage
separator as a vapour recovery tower which was identified as a storage tank. Consequently, the
design was done accordingly and there was a lack of a pressure relief system which would account
for any human errors and mechanical failures that may occur. Furthermore, Sonat did not produce
any documented piping and instrumental diagram before the incident. This meant that, thorough
analyses of the plant could not have been done or was either done ineffectively. Hence, safety
issues concerning the plant were not addressed and appropriate modifications were not made which

points. First, game contents and methods require national design. Based on game teaching, teachers
will reasonably and flexibly arrange teaching activities, avoiding excessive interference on students.
Through a series of activities, students attentions are kept so that the whole learning goes toward
the direction of teaching principles.
Second, game teaching is more difficult to organize in the classroom because of students lacking
autonomy, and the classroom will become confusing. All of these should be taken into full
consideration while designing class activities. Usually there are five principles that should be

English classroom games should have a clear purpose. While designing a game, teachers must be
very clear about the purpose of the game is to let students master something. The objective of the

grammar consolidating. The design should be combined with teaching purpose of the game, and the
