18th Amendment Dbq
Most people in American feel like they have to do what is justful for our country. Sometimes
what we believe is right, can become the complete opposite. On January 16, 1919 the 18th
Amendment was passed, but did not come into effect until the following year. This prohibited the
manufacturing, distributing, and selling of all alcoholic liquor but didn t prohibit the
consumption of intoxicating beverages. When they first passed this document they believed
what they were doing was important. To start off, how did history lead up to the banning of
alcohol in all fifty states. Then what issues and questions that they had back then, the debate
today, and how it let up to a revolution. Finally, what s my opinion and how I interpret the
amendment and what is happening today that can relate to this. To begin, how did this
amendment become so popular? For a saloon keeper it was hard to earn profit so they sometimes
introduced vices such as gambling and prostitution into their establishments in an attempt to earn
more. Many Americans considered saloons offensive and for the lower classes. This helped
spark a wave of strong religious revivalism that swept through the United States in the 1820 s and
1830 s. Hundreds protested against alcohol which was driven by mostly religious groups who call
alcohol and drunkenness a national cruse . Many of the followers believe if they abolish it that
abuse and violence would end causing a sober nation. The first temperance legislation appeared

3.Pakistan Perspective 4.Plebiscite 5.Partition 6.Independent and conclusion EARLY HISTORY:
In the 18th century Kashmir was ruled by the Muslim Pashtun Durrani Empire. In 1819 Kashmir
was conquered by the Sikh ruler Ranjit Singh. Following the First Anglo Sikh War in 1845 and
1846, Kashmir was first ceded by the Treaty of Lahore to the East India Company, and shortly after
sold by the Treaty of Amritsar to Gulab Singh, Raja of Jammu, who thereafter was given the title
Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir. From then until the Partition of India, Kashmir was ruled by the

3)PAKISTANI PROSPECTIVE: Pakistan says that Kashmir is a disputed territory whose final
status must be determined by the people of Kashmir. Pakistan always keep same just Jammu
and Kashmir is occupied territory exception of India. Pakistan seas fire signed under the
coercive pressure. And is here no legal and moral justification. And because the UN security
council also accept the self deternation of the Kashmiri people and that s way UN resolution
still alive and effective. Atal Bihari Vajpai visited to Pakistan in January 1999, because Bhartia
Janta Party always tried to solve Kashmir issue. Vajpai came in Pakistan by bus service. Prime
Minister Nawaz Shareef and Bihari Vajpai signed a declaration that called Lahore Declaration.
In that time raised Kargil issue in October 1999, taken over by the Chief of Army Staff. When
Musharaf was President of Pakistan, he invited by Atal Bihari Vajpai (PM of India). They signed
a declaration in July 2002, at Agrah, that is called Agra summit. These are the efforts was made
by the Pakistan. 4)POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS OF KASHMIR DISPUTE: Several options have been
proposed for solution of the Kashmir dispute but this intricate problem has remained un solved
causing enormous financial and material costs to all parties to the conflict. Although list of
proposals for resolution of Kashmir dispute is quite large but the following major possible
solutions have been put forward from time to time to

Contemporary Theories Of Subcultures
A subculture is considered a group of dominant people or culture that has been defined in its
norms, values, and interests, which are often inconsistent to those of large groups. (Bohm Vogel,
2011) Subcultures were created when a group of people that share the same beliefs or
circumstances finds themselves cut off from society. (Bohm Vogel, 2011) These groups are distinct
from those of the majority and are held by a group into a broader society. Most subcultures are
recognized by their age of its members, or by race, ethnicity, class, gender, and their qualities that
may be aesthetic, religious, occupational, political, and sexual or a combination of these factors.
However, people create subcultures as a way to feel accepted while also signifying that they are
different from other groups. The subculture theory focuses on consistent distinctiveness, identity,
commitment, and autonomy.
The first subculture group I would like to recognize is the police they are law enforcement officers
with specific types of attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. I place them in the subculture category
because of they spend their time dealing with crime; therefore they tend to be judgmental towards
members of the public viewing them as untrustworthy and potentially hostile; therefore, the public
view the police as being unreliable and abusive as well. The police depend on their cohorts to back
them up, and mostly teamwork to apprehend criminals; therefore, it creates a dynamic of police

John Rawls’ A Theory of Justice Essay
John Rawls A Theory of Justice holds that rational, mutually disinterested individuals, in the
Original Position and given the task of establishing societal rules to maximise their own happiness
throughout life, are liable to choose as principles of societal justice a) guaranteed fundamental
liberties and b) the nullification of social and economic disparities by universal equality of
opportunities, which are to be of greatest benefit to the least advantaged members of society , .
Rawls system of societal cbfgdbre for the maintenance of fundamental liberties, equality of
opportunity and support for the disadvantaged is exercised. However, when the individual runs the

It also stimulates competition rational individuals will naturally want more primary goods for
themselves , and will be willing to compete for these. This is vital to a healthy economy because it
prevents stagnating monopolization by individuals.
One weakness in Rawls theory is his assumption that the individual in the Original Position will
think conservatively. Realistically, the individual is supposedly more likely to risk a slightly
worse worst case scenario for a markedly better best case scenario (similar to the large numbers
of individuals who gamble money in hope of winning more) . The individual may choose to
dismiss the Difference Principle in favour of a riskier, but more beneficial principle for example,
that the rich get richer . Rawls argues that the individual will adopt conservatism to ensure that all
parties may pursue their own ends irrespective of (dis)advantages, simply because of their arbitrary
placement in society. It may also be plausibly argued that the gravity of the situations differs, and
that when charged with the creation of a society, one is more likely to act conservatively because
the dGBgbGGBecision carries potentially negative, far reaching ramifications.
It is similarly asserted that Rawls Maximin Principle may eliminate beneficial inequalities . For
example, should the annual income of two people be $100,000 each, this would be a less

My Future Goal To Attend A D1 School
My future goal is to one day attend a D1 school. With this goal in mind, I would be able to

Presidential Debates
Television and the purpose of it has changed in a negative way throughout the years. At the
beginning, we took advantage of being able to be a part of the presidential elections and acquire
the facts about what truly mattered during the debates. Lately we ve started to look at what the
screen is showing us rather than concentrating on what it was actually telling us. We as people
have begun to want to appoint our official leaders based on who looks better and televisionhas
helped feed this desire for the worst. Technology has been changing progressively from the start.

modernized and immaculate version. Computers, phones, and televisions all started... Show more

The first way they make this possible is to groom and primp their image. Theodore White
thought that Kennedy benefited because his image on television was crisp ; Nixon s light
colored suit, wrong makeup, bad posture was fuzzed (Source C). He is saying that Kennedy
acknowledged the fact that his appearance made a big difference in how the people looked at
him and he made sure that he was up to par with his looks. Another way they make their
appearance look better in comparison is to draw attention away from themselves and attack their
opponent s character. This technique is referred to as ad hominem and it is one of the most
common ones used in this year s presidential debates. A prime example of this is when Donald
Trump once said, Unstable Hillary Clinton, lacks the judgment, temperament and moral
character to lead this country and I believe that so strongly, he then later continued with, She s
really pretty close to unhinged, and you ve seen, you ve seen it a couple times. The people in
the background know it, the people who know her know it and she s like an unbalanced person.
In this claim he has completely left the topic of what truly matters and has started to stray away
from it in an attempt to make Hillary seem inferior. All of this is a battle of image over image.
Louis Menand wrote, Our national politics has become a competition for images or between
images, rather than between ideals (Source C). This statement just backs up the idea that we ve
started to focus on looks rather than

Veterinary Malpractice Case Study
QUESTIONS PRESENTED I.Whether a veterinarian has committed veterinary malpractice,
under Texas law, when he administers a brand of vaccine to a mare after precautions of negative
reactions, and such vaccine causes the mare convulsions. II.Whether it is possible to recover
emotional damages against a veterinarian for veterinary malpractice, under Texas law, when a
horse owner suffers emotional stress after witnessing her horse have a serious reaction to a vaccine.
BRIEF ANSWERS I.Probably yes. Under Texas law, Ms. Perez will likely be able to establish all
of the elements of a veterinary malpractice claim because Dr. Hou had a duty to conform to a
certain standard of care and his deviation from the standard of care caused a reasonably close...

Perez needed to consider what spring shots to give her mare, Clementine. Her previous
veterinarian had retired, selling his practice to Dr. Hou. Ms. Perez was particularly
apprehensive with the West Nile vaccine, because Clementine had experienced severe reactions
to both brands currently on the market. The first vaccine caused the mare to colic and the
second vaccine caused neurological symptoms. After the mare s reaction to the second vaccine,
the mare s previous veterinarian administered medications to counteract the reaction. He
recorded the mare s reactions and treatments to both of the vaccines in his records, which
remained at the clinic when he sold his practice to Dr. Hou. He suggested taking preventative
measures to minimize any allergic reactions. He informed Ms. Perez about a third vaccine that
was in development, in which he was optimistic about because it seemed to produce far fewer
reactions. Once Dr. Hou took over the veterinary practice, Ms. Perez called Dr. Hou s office to
set up an appointment. After futile attempts to speak with the veterinarian, Dr. Hou s
receptionist agreed to pass on Ms. Perez s message to Dr. Hou, requesting that he bring the
newly developed vaccine. Several weeks later, Dr. Hou arrived at Ms. Perez s barn for a
consultation. After frequent requests to pull Clementine s patient records, Dr. Hou finally agreed
and promised to call Ms. Perez with preventative steps. He also agreed to order the new

Descriptive Essay About My Old Dog
I felt the coldness of the November winds pass through my headphones as I was getting the car
to go to Petco. I don t know why I wanted to go I guess I just agreed to go cause everyone else
was, It s not like we were going to get a pet anyway. Everyone was talking I wasn t paying
attention. I was just staring and imagining that everyone was racing to get to one place. My
sister started to try and get my attention. Hey Will, when we get there do you wanna see the fish
with me? . Sure, I said just thinking about my old dog and how I would ride on her when I was
really young and weighed less than her. Her name was Samantha, Sam. I loved her more than
anything even more than my parents. When we had to put her down I was heart broken. I
would never feel the way I felt with her ever again. Even just thinking of her makes me sad now,
until I saw her. I stepped out of my car thinking about Sam. Ashley, do you ever think of Sam, I
said without getting teary eyed. Will, you know we all do. She responded, and she was right, I
always dreamed that Sam would come back. As I stepped inside I looked at the tall shelves filled
with animal materials. I walked around in the bird sections and tried to get the birds to talk to me.
The fur of the birds looked sleek every feather more pretty than the next. I next when down to the
fish aquarium thing. The aquarium had nice red tiles with looked like they were just mopped.

Burton Chapter 4
One thematic motif that emerges in chapter 6 of Burton and chapter 4 of Olstein is the concept of
connections and genealogy. Specifically, in chapter 4 of Olstein, he discusses the use of comparing
and connecting as a historiographical methodology that has been both used and challenged by
historians since its creation. In addition, in chapter 6 of Burton, she is discussing genealogyor the
historyof how X or Y came to be, was shaped, emerged (Burton, pg. 73). In other words, Burton
contextualizes genealogy by defining it as a backstory.
In chapter 4 of Olstein, he notes early in the chapter, that comparative history has been on the
defense since its institutionalization (Olstein, pg. 83). This demonstrates that this is a highly
contested historical methodology that is yet to be widely accepted by historians. This might have to
do with various historian s interpretations of what comparative and connective history means. For
example, Sanjay Subrahmanyan disagrees with Victor Lieberman s... Show more content on

Instead, Subrahmanyan sees connective histories as, attentive to local, regional, supra regional, and
global interfaces (Olstein, pg. 84). In other words, Subrahmanyan sees Lierberman s work as merely
comparing and contrasting different regions and argues that there is greater importance in looking
at how each region is not only different but also are connected through various means, such as for
trade. Olstein quantifies comparative history by stating it must have at least two units to compare,
and that comparative history is quantitative more than conceptual (Olstein, pg. 88). Through this
analysis of two or more units, we see that comparative history is converging with another
methodology that Olstein discusses in other chapters, which is historical sociology. Olstein
concludes his chapter by looking at the

Canada s Role In Ww2
In the final two years of the Second World War, Canadian operations was astonishing from the
simple growth and expansion of the RCN, working alongside Britain to engage in and manage
convoy protection. Canada s naval contribution was essential over U Boat attacks on shipping, and
because of such undertakings, Canadian naval officers conducted an ultimately successful
campaign to have Canadas efforts in the Battle of the Atlantic acknowledged by the creation of an
independent Canadian command in the northwest Atlantic. In December 1942, Canada successfully
won an administrative battle to gain responsibility for the distribution of all intelligence concerning
convoys under Canadian control, and because of complex additions to the Enigma machines... Show

Moving forward, it is also highly unlikely that Britain would have survived after the Battle of
Britain had the Royal Canadian Navy not been assisting merchant convoys crossing the Atlantic
from the US and Canada. The air effort presented similar trends as the RCN in May 1945, there
were 784 aircraft in Coastal command, with 511 used against submarines and the rest for enemy
attacks. Approximately 153,000 flight personnel were trained out of a total of 239,761 that
were engaged in British and Commonwealth flying operations, a pivotal choice in gaining air
superiority victory over the sky would never have happened so quickly without Canada s
involvement. The RCAF famously worked with the RCN throughout the Battle of Britain, the
attempt by the German war machine to destroy Britain s Royal Air Force (RAF) and prepare for
invasion after already conquering most of Europe, including France, which was one of Canada
s first campaigns during the first nine months or so of war. Founded in 1924, the RCAF was the
smallest of Canada s services when war broke out in 1939. Attempts to expand and improve the
force up until 1935 were futile, only growing from 569 to 1,031 personnel, just enough for the
needs of war. The Second World War undoubtedly established an aircraft industry and the
progression of civil aviation formed a reserve of skilled pilots from a developed training scheme
established in Canada. The inauguration of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP)
took place, a strategy conceived by Prime Minister King to train pilots and flight personnel in
Canada, so that the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) would remain a safe distance away from the
fighting in Europe and North Africa. This allowed for contribution from the war effort on home

Essay on Working in Groups and Social Loafing
Social loafing is the effect that people will exert less effort if they are working in a collective
environment. Working in groups is an integral part of everyday life because it happens in almost
every context whether it is sports teams, organizational groups, project groups and even juries.
Therefore it is important to understand the underlying factors that influence this construct. The
current research composed of 20 participants, investigated the social loafingeffect of two working
conditions: Coactive and Collective. It was hypothesized that collective groups would have
significantly lower scores than coactive and the results supported this prediction strongly as there
was a significant difference between the groups. These results... Show more content on

Therefore it is important to understand the factors that motivate or demotivate individuals in those
contexts in order to improve the collective outcomes that could generally be critiqued as
unreliable or invalid due to the social loafing effect. Previous studies have indicated that the type
of cognitive task performed mediates the effect social loafing. For example in challenging tasks
that involved brainstorming or generating an ideas, the work teams had an opportunity to
contribute their own unique ideas that made it more likely that they suffered consequences of
social loafing (Robbins, 1995). Personal involvement has been said to mediate the effects of social
loafing. This is a situation where the subjects have intrinsic value or personal meaning that play an
important role in the participants lives (Brickner et al., 1986) As a result, high involvement
subjects produced more favourable thoughts whereas low involvement did not. Weldon and
Gargano (1988) suggested that anonymity is associated with group performance. Basically, the
larger the group the more difficult it is to monitor individual performance thus individual efforts
are unknown and they are free to loaf without fear of social judgment (Weldon Gargano, 1988).
Therefore it is consistent to say that although social loafing is expected to occur in most collective
tasks, this can be decreased or even eliminated if the group performance is being compared to other

Deucalion Compare And Contrast
Favour Owolabi Mrs. Henderson Honors World Lit. February 3, 2015 Mankind s Death and
Rebirth Being an honorable person is an important attribute to many people. Noah and
Deucalion were two highly honorable men. These men and their families were the only two
men out of thousands to survive a fate that changed mankind forever. Noah was a man from
Babylon who feared God and found favor in His sight. Deucalion was a man from Greece who
pleased the gods and was able to stay pure in his heart. Both men had many similar attributes and
purposes for life, but each had differences that made their stories unique. A commonality in both
stories is that mankind harbored evil in their hearts and had no regard for God/Zeus provoking
their wraths. According to the Grecian flood story, men became unbearably wicked and no
longer lived at peace with each other. They were always at war with each other having no law or
safety in the land. In the Bible, God saw how evil men were and how there was nothing but
immorality in mans heart. The depravity and iniquity of man are what led to God and Zeus s wrath.
Men became lawless, it was as if every man was for themselves. This corruption is what made God
and Zeus to become weary and to regret ever creating man. But as the world became wickeder and

Ravens (Corvus corax) are known to be scavengers and there have been observations that they
may have developed a foraging strategy that involves grey wolves (Canis lupis). Henrich et al.
(2002) discussed the benefits that the common raven gain by utilizing kleptoparasitism as a
foraging strategy in order to reduce risk and search time, as well as obtaining mammalian prey
that they would likely never be able to hunt without wolves. A kleptoparasitic relationship means
that ravens steal the prey that the wolves have caught. Hayes et al. (2005) discussed how skillful

Samuel s Controversy
Samuel s hereditary succession
The Israelites want to set a monarchy like all nations, but Samuel, the judge of Israel, does not want
to establish the monarchy. Why is Samuel unpleasant to the request of the Israelites to set a King?
1 When Samuel became old, he made his sons judges over Israel. 2 The name of his firstborn son
was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judges in Beer sheba. 3 Yet his sons did
not follow in his ways, but turned aside after gain; they took bribes and perverted justice. 4 Then
all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah, 5 and said to him, You
are old and your sons do not follow in your ways; appoint for us, then, a king to govern us, like
other nations. 6 But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, Give us a king to govern us.

However, Saul is soon abandoned by God because of his disobediences. Yet, Saul s disobedience is
controversial. Patricia K. Tull, the author of 1 and 2 Samuel in Theological Bible Commentary,
argues, Saul s exact offense is unclear, and commentators struggle to reconstruct it, augmenting
the impression that he was given a test with no correct choices. In contrast, Marvin Sweeney, the
professor of the Hebrew Bible in Claremont School of Theology, asserts, Although the narrative
can hardly be considered anti monarchic, it takes care to raise concerns about the character of
kingship and its costs to the nation at large and it demands that proper kingship in Israel must be
exercised in accordance with the divine will. In this view, Saul has not been accorded with God
s will. Then, is this God s intentional choice? If it is true, why he does this? If God did not
choose Saul as the king, it would be possible that he is not deserted from God. Bible

The Controversy Of Selling Counterfeit Products
Ten years ago, it was easy to walk into a store and find fake or knockoff products. Today, it s
much harder to find people and businesses that are selling counterfeit products. E Commerce sites,
such as Amazon and E bay have helped create millions of such stores online, which is why it s so
hard to check for fakes. One storefront gets shut down and another one opens. Amazon has made it
extraordinarily difficult to enforce against counterfeitproducts. The problem isn t just limited to
Amazon though. E bay, Walmart.com, and Newegg have also been accused of selling counterfeits.
All of the companies say they have strict policies in effect for removing offending products from
their websites, and that they vociferously fight against counterfeits.

Albrecht Durer Self-Portrait Essay
Albrecht Durer SelfPortrait Artist and Humanist, Albrecht Durer is one of the most significant
figures in the history f European art outside Italy during the Renaissance (Gowing 195). Portraying
the questioning spirit of the Renaissance, Durer s conviction that he must examine and explore his
own situation through capturing the very essence of his role as artist and creator, is reflected in the
Self portraitin a Fur Collared Robe(Strieder 10).
With the portrait, Durer s highly self conscious approach to his status as an artist coveys his
exalted mission of art more clearly than in any other painting. He seems to be less concerned with

Symmetrically arranging his serious, handsome face and mass of shoulder length hair deliberately
invite comparison with the image of Christ. The idealized arrangement and strict symmetry of the
face is based on a construction made up of circle and a triangle, a formula used down to the

recurred in many images of Christ, particularly in the form of the vera icon, or true image

No architectural setting appears within the plain, black background of the painting (Hutchison 67).
The darkened tone and limited but unified color scheme create a mood of sanctity (Hutchinson 68).
The contours of the face are molded by means of soft light and transparent shadows, almost in an

Hiroshima Bombing Research Paper
On August 6, 1945, an experimental form of warfare hit Dr. Shima s office in Hiroshima,
vaporizing a woman half a mile away in 0.15 seconds (Norris). This form of warfare was a
supreme form of weaponry that was termed the nuclear bomb. The bombs that hit Hiroshima and
Nagasaki, Japan, were dubbed the Little Boy and Fat Man , respectively, and they killed
approximately 200,000 people after one week of impact. Health problems such as cancer (breast,
lung, and thyroid), in utero defects, and radiation linked chromosomal change haunted and killed
an even larger group of people months or years after the initial events (Shoten). The power of an
atomic bomb still worries people to this day, especially those who have witnessed the utter

For the first time in history, the world saw the potential destruction caused by certain devices,
such as the atomic bomb. The atomic bomb could massacre thousands of citizens in one go, tear
down buildings of all sizes, and destroy a strong nation s economy. The world now knew what
could happen in a WWIII scenario. Now, almost every country knows how to construct a nuclear
fission bomb and some countries are even working on creating a hydrogen bomb (nuclear
fusion). The destruction that can be caused by one atomic bomb is plenty to force a country into
surrender, as multiple atomic bombs could obliterate a whole continent. Such a scenario took
place when the Soviet Union and the United States were in the Cold War. Either side had atomic
weapons stockpiled and a few buttons could have ended the lives of millions of innocents. During
the bombing of Hiroshima, death was painless, but the long term damage dealt to survivors caused
immense pain. Survivors dealt with thick, figure altering keloid scars all over their face and chest,
agony from untreated cancer, cataract, and infected wounds from untreated cuts. After the world
saw how two bombs affected the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, people understood that no one
was safe (Shoten). After the bombings at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, an extreme fear of future
warfare was placed on the

Human Activities And Its Effects On The Ocean Tides Essay
Estuaries
An estuary is a partially enclosed body of water formed where the freshwater from the land mixes
and meets with saltwater from the sea. As a result, the salinity and water level among various other
factors, is dependent on the ocean tides.
80% of the world s cities are situated near an estuary. For its abundance in resources are crucial
to to the longevity of the cities. It is recognized globally as one of the most threatened ecologies in
the world. Human activities such as agriculture, waste water processing, land clearance,
introduction of exotic species have rapidly increased the erosion rate of rivers, and have redirected
river flows both into and within estuaries. This in turn leads to its accelerated aging process.
Sediments from rivers upstream are rapidly surging into the estuary at a rate more than the tide
could erode away. Estuaries that exist without human activities collect a net sediment layer of 1
millimetre per year. This is directly juxtaposed to the poorly maintained estuaries disrupted by
human activities, gaining a staggering net sediment layer of 20 millimetres per year. Eventually this
causes many estuarine ecologies to decay and render them incapable of supporting life.
The estuarine ecology is a spawning pool for many coastal organisms. Both visiting and local
species raise their young within the estuarine habitat. The habitat supports an enormous range of
species, such as shellfish, crabs, marble worms, algae, mangroves, cockles and

The author was born into the Baptist faith. He was very active in the church and always had a

Mark Edmundson On The Uses Of Modern Education Summary
On the Criticisms of Modern Education
There are courses that students take in order to earn credit, and most require essays. Each essay
that is submitted is expected to follow a set of rules, with students obligated to follow these rules
and to create an end product that encompasses the expectations set forth by their teacher. The
following summary and response to Mark Edmundson s work follows most of the rules, though it
may not meet expectations set forth by a single teacher. Some risks are worth taking, even if it may
seem to jeopardize the educational path students feel obliged to follow. Using his experiences with
students who follow rules, Edmundson makes many misguided judgments about the passions,
individuality, and educational decisions of students. On the Uses of a Liberal Education by Mark
Edmundson examines the relationship between the ways of college students and the universities
they attend. He states that students lack passion and avoid taking educational chances to challenge
themselves. Edmundson also has the idea that all of his students, except for a few outliers, are
cowardly and unwilling to pursue higher paths of education. According to Edmundson, the
universities are to blame; the main purpose of the universities being to appease the wants and needs
of students. This consumer culture created by universities is unknowingly perpetuated by the
students who wish to attend. Edmundson concludes with ideas of how to improve this relationship:

King Leopold s Ghost Analysis
King Leopold s Ghost a story of greer, terror and heroism in colonial africa written by Adam
Hochschild, reveals the hidden horror in the Congo. Hochschild conveys the exploitation of the
Congo Free State by King Leopold II of Belgium from 1885 to 1908, as well as the revolting
brutality during that period. Hochschild discloses how King Leopold II s unpleasant and atrocious
capacity of maliciousness is shown through mass killings and colonization of Congolese land. The
Ghost of King Leopold II still plagues the world while he is celebrated as a great humanitarian.
(use own words).
Part One: Walking Into Fire In the first part of Hochschild s book, he describes the actions and
desires that led King Leopold to seize the Congo Free State, the rules he broke and how he
manipulated the nations with his righteousness of combating slavery even though figured such
as George Williams and ____ began speaking out against him. Hochschild describes King
Leopold II as rude, revolting and awkward as he was growing up. His characteristics only began
to drift towards persuasive and cunning when he discovered his curiosity in the colonization of
new land. Conveniently, many European countries had no interest in colonization. When Leopold
gained power, and searched for his lovely colony, their ambivalence resulted in him creating a
colony on his own account. Leopold never actually stepped foot in Congo, he had used explorers
such as Stanley Mortan and other white men to establish the colony for him. To sneakily undergo
his objectives without other countries noticing, he created organizations in which he could operate
under. For instance, the International African Association to stop the outspread of slavery.
Leopold additionally hosted conference meetings to speak on human rights. If he was to seize
anything in Africa, he could do so only if he convinced everyone that his interest was purely
altruistic . (46) King Leopold succeeded at convincing every one of his goodwill, that he was
supported financially from the Belgian government in introducing free trade and religion in the
Congo. Overall, King Leopold had invaded the Congo to have his own land, sending Stanley

Baleen Whales Research Paper
Baleen whales are known as a whalebone. They also live in the Southern Hemisphere. The meaning
of Baleen is made out of keratin, the same protein that makes up our fingernails and hair. They
make up one of two whale suborders within the cetacean family.
Baleen whales are mammals, which means that they are warm blooded and breathe air using their
lungs. That sounds interesting considering that they live in ocean waters, but they have two
blowholes at the top of their body that allows them to breathe when they reach the surface of the
water. As mammals, they also give birth to a live animal, called a whalecalf. Unlike humans, who

How Does Williams Present Lust In Poetry
Love and literary works of poetry have been used together to portray one s feeling of admiration
or longing towards someone or something. Lust is typically looked down upon and with caution;
on the other hand, it can be seen as the protagonist of different verses. Imagist poet William Carlos
Williams approach to love is one society deems unconventional. There are rare occurrences where
both of these emotions are used simultaneously to describe what a person once shared with another
person. In his poem The Young Housewife, the underlying tone of lust can lead one to conclude
that a secret and past relationship, full of love and lust, existed between the speaker and a woman.

one wondering the truth behind the work. The poem begins with the speaker seeing the housewife
in her nightgown through the window, at ten A.M., and within that moment she walked outside
her house still dressed in her negligee. This suggests that the young housewife saw the speaker of
the poem driving past her house through the window. When the speaker mentions the housewife
was uncorseted, it indicates the lust the speaker has imagined when her body was seen since
being uncorseted has to do with the noticing and looking the upper body of a woman. The
speaker describes the young housewife tucking in the strands of her hair showing that the speaker
of the poem was able to get a look at the young housewife s appearance. The entire poem emits the

seek to influence our lives in some form or fashion, and it poses questions about our collective
cultural behaviors that have become an everyday event. The author introduces himself to us the

previous books. Because he was a media/advertisement consultant, he acts as a double agent
writing down and reporting the coercive practices from everyday people to large corporations. And
that is exactly what he does in the book. He does not reach to conclusions and point at the

Why? It creates a sort of scenario that puts the customer into a fantasy. The customer is forced to
obey when he is asked presumptive questions. To make people quickly sign the contract for the
car, Jim tried to seem like an ally to people. He would tell customers that the big, bad manager
made a mistake and that they needed to sign quickly before the manager realized he made the
error. Since many of us have caught on to this extremely traumatizing experience, we all live to
loathe it. So GM launched a new brand, Saturn, to make the car buying experience less
regrettable. Rushkoff says that although this might not seem like coercion, but actually we are
coerced into buying a car at fixed price just so that we appear not to get ripped off. The way
coercion is really effective is by making it hide so well that the people who sell us things, like
the happy, cheerful youths at GAP, do not themselves know that they are coercing. This can be
achieved by having ambiguous goals in acrostic poems spelling out the company s name.
Another way is mind washing the employees by training courses. These techniques to hide

A Commentary on, and Partial Analysis of, Nietzsche s Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Part 4, with
Especial Reference to Discourses 11 to 20
Although Zarathustra gains his happiness before the Fourth and Final Part of Al Sprecht
Zarathustra, that which he is most concerned with his work, is still ahead of him in The
Temptation of Zarathustra: an Interlude (which Nietzsche viewed as the fourth part s proper
title in view of what already transpired and what follows in the text as we find it abridged
today). As an interlude, it bastardises the integrity of the previous three books if they are viewed
as an artistic whole, and was only published in Nietzsche s lifetime as a private run of 40 copies
and only seven copies were circulated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the highest point of development has come with part 4 s higher men, then Zarathustra must
concede to this prophet of great weariness, the cipher of Schopenhauer, for whom It is all one,
nothing is worth while, the world is without meaning, knowledge chokes. 3. The Schopenhauerian
Prophet s proclaimed destruction of first order visceral passion cuts the route of Zarathustra s
would be creation of new values. By seducing Zarathustra too pity the prophet would persuade
Zarathustra to acknowledge that he shares in the prophet and higher men s unhappiness, and that
his claim to happiness has been a lie. The prophet warns Zarathustra that the waves around your
mountain rise and rise... waves of great distress and affliction: soon they will lift your boat up too,
and carry you away... Do you still hear nothing? Does not the sound of rushing and roaring arise
from the depths? (Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Part 4, chapter 2 The Cry of Distress). Whereupon,
Zarathustra hears a long, protracted cry, thrown between abysses too hollow to contain it, and
realizes it to be a human cry; But what is human distress to me! The ultimate sin that is reserved
for me perhaps you know what it is called? Pity! answered the prophet from an overflowing heart,
and raised both hands aloft O Zarathustra, I come to seduce you to your ultimate sin! ... why do
you hide yourself? It is the Higher Man that cries for you! (Ibid.). Zarathustra is hoping for the high

Iodp Site 913 Glaciations
The Onset of the Northern Hemisphere Glaciation
By Christina Ohrazda
Student at Stockholm University
28.09.15
Introduction
The Northern Hemisphere Glaciation (NHG) is believed to have initiated into large scale,
permanent ice sheets ~2.5 Ma, which is almost 31.5 Ma after the initiation of the Antarctica ice
sheets. There are many possible causes for the onset of this climate event, some of which we will
be reviewing in this essay. In this essay we will look at the cores from IODP and ODP sites 302,
Arctic Ocean; 913, Greenland basin; and 907, north of Iceland, in order to identify the
characteristics and possible causes of the northern hemisphere glaciations. First we will look at the
evidence for the onset of this event and the proxies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, proxies show that the initiation of IRD ~46.25 Ma at site 306, correspond to a 1000
ppm decrease in CO2 gases in the atmosphere (See Figure 5. Note. From Cenozoic ice rafting
history of the central Arctic Ocean: Terrigenous sands on the Lomonosov Ridge (St. John 2007)).
This correlation between IRD and pCO2 is critical since it leads us to the hypothesis that a decline
of pCO2 could have driven the climate in the polar regions over a temperature threshold, which
enabled the onset of continental glaciers and ice sheets on the surface of the Arctic Sea (St. John
2008). This is only one of many possible reasons of the NHG onset, where other potential causes
suggested for the initiation of the NHG are: events of mountain building; plateau uplift in southern
Asia and the American West; Volcanic triggering, resulting in aerosols in the atmosphere; and the
closure of Panama Seaway, which would have changed the whole ocean circulation and distribution
of cold vs. warm ocean water (St. John et al.

Asbestos Betwee Case Study
Having already established the basis of a theoretical outlook as well as the social history of
asbestos, which is still produced and used in American manufacturing, we will now move on to
explain the methods we are using to collect our data. For our subject area, we have selected
Oneida Herkimer, Jefferson, Oswego, and Onondaga County Solid Waste Facilities located in
Upstate New York, and we will be exploring the differences in how asbestos is disposed of in
each of these counties. We chose these counties because our insider has had direct contact with
the solid waste management bosses of these counties and can easily obtain asbestos information.
We believe this is best because it limits under reporting of asbestos amounts in fear of public
exposure. Furthermore, he has a case study we hope to analysis on the differences in the
removal of asbestos from Jefferson and Oswego. We plan to find this out by using an interview
process to collect our data. We will gather information by way of interviews with leaders from the
New York State Department of Labor as well as landfill operators in each of the five counties listed
above. We hope to analyze the discrepancies and pitfalls regarding disposal of asbestos... Show

Piano Reflection
Everything was progressing smoothly as my fingers traversed the terrain of my upright piano
until, inevitably, an all too familiar, jarring chord rang from its core. Although I wanted nothing
more than to disregard my repeated blunder and never look back, I knew that this strategy would
fall short when I performed the piece for my teacher the following day. So with perseverance,
focus, and fear of a disapproving glare, I managed to play it through faultlessly. Now all that
remained was the small task of playing the piece an additional four times in a row with that same
impeccable accuracy. Upon realizing the amount of work ahead of me, I mentally kicked myself for
not starting sooner and lengthened my timer from the remaining twelve minutes to another thirty. It
was time to woodshed this until I got it right every time.
Playing the piano has been a rewarding experience for me throughout my life for not only
granting me the skill of playing, but also for teaching me lessons that can be applied to my
academic and personal life. One of the most valuable lessons I have learned from piano is the
ability of breaking down a seemingly unsolvable problem into its basic components or, in the terms
of my piano teacher, woodshedding. For non musicians, woodshedding might be an unfamiliar term
and may even sound fictitious, but rest assured, it is a legitimate word denoting the practice of an
instrument. However, my piano teacher had a more distinct interpretation. The first time I

Research Paper On Jean Piaget
Jean Piaget was one of the most influential psychologists in the 20th century, but his focus was not
always on this subject. Piaget started his career in the natural science field. He was a researcher
from age eleven and continued to follow this path when he received his Ph.D. in Zoology in 1918.
Piaget s interest shifted in the 1920s though. He was focusing more on psychoanalysis than the
natural sciences. As a result, he spend a year working at a boys institute that was founded by Alfred
Binet. Binet is known for his intelligence tests and Piaget scored them at the institute. Jean Piaget
took his interest in psychoanalysis a step further by developing theories. The first was about genetic

Tanks
Jack Elmes
How did tank innovation impact warfare and the soldiers who fought in the trenches during World
War One?
World War One was known as the First World War or The Great War. It began on the 28th of July
1914 and lasted until the 11th of November 1918. Thirty countries were involved in the war. Over
nine million soldiers died and twenty one million were wounded. Undeniably World War One was
one of the biggest and most devastating wars in history. Trench warfaretook those who signed up
by complete surprise. A war that was intended to be all about movement became stagnant. Soldiers
were very much stuck in the trenches and experienced horrendous conditions. As a result the use of
terrifying new technologies not used before were created in a response to the conditions of trench
warfare. This resulted in trench warfare being changed forever due to the introduction of the tank in
1915.
It has been stated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The tank was the first armored machine to be used. It was adapted from tractors and its goal was
to break through the heavily fortified trenches and offer protection to the troops from any
artillery fire. British engineering was the origin of the first WW1 Landship , which became the
tank as we now know it. Tanks were a very important part of WW1 as they increased mobility on
the front line and broke the stalemate of trench warfare. The first tank ever used in military
conflict was at the battle of Flers Courcelette in September 1916. The first prototype tank came
out in 1915 by the British it was called little Willie, weighed 14 tons and could only travel at two
miles per hour. This tank was not used in warfare. Big Bertha was the most famous tank it had a
48 ton gun capable of firing a shell over 9 miles. It took 200 men several hours to assemble the gun.

Starbucks vs. Ethiopia (Csr Issue)
Issue Two: Starbucks vs. Ethiopia
In March 2005, Ethiopia filed applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to
trademark its coffee names, Harar, Sidamo, and Yirgacheffe, which are three coffee regions in the
country. The Ethiopian government had hoped that by forcing coffee buyers into licensing
agreements would lead to coffee farmers gaining more control over its coffee trade and earn a
bigger slice of the pie by receiving a higher percentage of earnings from the retail price of coffee. It
is estimated that Ethiopian farmers could earn up to USD 88 million extra per year.
Oxfam America had accused Starbucks of prompting the National Coffee Association of USA

Utilitarianism is an ethical doctrine which states that people should produce the most happiness
or pleasure for everyone who is affected by those actions. The utilitarian view of justice proposes
an economic system which will benefit the society than any other system. Besides, the
proponents of this view also hold the opinion that steps should be taken to reduce great income
disparities that further polarize our society. Hence it is suggested that an egalitarian allocation
of income would increase the income of people who earn less which would eventually boost
total happiness (Shaw, 2005) The underlying fact that coffee farmers only get 10% of the profit
of each cup of coffee sold and millions of Ethiopians who rely on coffee trade as a source of
income and living under extreme poverty suggests that Starbucks did not practice what they preach
and should have taken a more holistic approach in helping coffee farmers in Ethiopia earning a
fairer share of income from the coffee trade.
Proponents of the broader view of corporate social responsibility stress that organizations are
integrated with the rest of the society and have a moral obligation to their stakeholders which
include employees, suppliers, customers, the community, and the society at large (Shaw, 2005).
Besides, proponents of human rights

Healthcare And The United States
Healthcare in the United States is a constant struggle. For generations the country has been in
heated debate over the best approach to this unsettling issue. While many changes have been
made, none seem to be effective enough to please and serve the country effectively. No matter
what course is taken there is always a group, or groups of individuals who are left out and
underserved. As a country we need to provide for all of our citizens to ensure healthy living and
overall quality of life. Unfortunately, our society is based off of socioeconomic class. This
becomes an issue in regards to healthcare requirements due to the fact that many poverty stricken
families go throughout their lives with little or no coverage at all. For those in good financial
standing healthcare is easily accessible, while the poor struggle and deal with illness in
inhumane ways. Millions of American citizens are uninsured; this number includes all walks of
life from children through the elderly. In order to overcome this devastating issue the American
people have to come to a decision on how to care for all of our citizens so that no one is left out.
In today s society this has become an even more difficult task as we face an ongoing struggle
within our economy, leaving many families in financial hardship. Why is it that as a society we
cannot overcome this obstacle? The United Statesof America, while not flawless, has reached great
success and achievements yet cannot provide proper healthcare

The spread of Jamaican culture and Rastafarianism can be accredited to many events and technical
advances in communication. Bob Marley is one of the main influences the spread of Jamaican
culture and Rastafarianism due to the lyrical rhetoric used in his popular music. Growing up as an

Gilroy defines Marley calling him the greatest man in reggae music and the greatest leader and
proponent of the spread of the Rasta religion. This article poses
Marley as an icon for the struggle for justice, peace and human rights 5 not just another musician or
pop icon.
Although opposed to many established governmental policies, Marley was not an anti
establishment advocate. He was an individual that believed governments and everyday people,
such as those who may not be involved in politics, needed to look out for their fellow humans and
treat all people equally regardless of ethnicity and income.
Marley used his music to bring many social issues to the forefront that had previously been
suppressed. Many of these issues were not suppressed because of their nature, but because of the
lack of influence Jamaica had on the world.
The country of Jamaica is highly dependant on tourism and agricultural exports such as raw sugar.
By products of the raw sugar production are molasses and rum. Due to these limited industries,
most citizens of Jamaica are of the working class and this

Masculinity In The Black Panther Party
The training of armed defense within the Black Panther Party contributed to many of the violent
actions that involved members of the Black Panther Party. Violent discipline, in and out of the BPP,
was heavily enforced by Huey Newton, however the violent atmosphere surrounding the BPP solely
became a place for proving and asserting manhood, and not advancing the revolution that the
founders of the BPP had originally called for. Although many black women attempted to embody
the feminine American womanhood that their white counterparts had, according to Elaine Brown,
chair of the BPP from 1974 1777, many women joined the Black Panther Partyas the image of
strength and confidence projected by male Panther leaders had a powerful, sensual appeal for many
female recruits (Estes, 163). Women within the Black Panther Party were often overlooked as male
leaders aggressively pushed the image of strong, black manhood and militant masculinity to the...

Larry s male chauvinism and how problems would occur but those problems would be outweighed
by his fearlessness, and by the relentlessness and even savagery with which he always carried out
orders. He was capable of hoisting me above the battlefield of men who might resist or challenge

Hatchet has several metchet metaphors and it is just one part of the story. Though in my opinion
one of the most important, if not they most important. They Hatchet a tool for survival, it has

So. survival this the most basic and easy concept of the Hatchet. Brain the main character uses the

Air Quality Pollution
To begin, Hillsborough County in Florida is home to downtown Tampa which is one of the major
cities in the state. With having big cities in your local areas comes with some side effects. Tampa is
related to many air quality issues in the state. Tampa is a continuously growing city, as people
relocate to the area, many things must happen to accommodate the growth in population. Most of
which contributes to of the air quality standards in our area because of the need for additional
roads, and numerous new housing developments to be built, increasing the amount of power plants
to power the many new houses. To continue, these contribute to massive air quality issues for Tampa
. The number of vehicles increase as more people move to the area, as well as big truck needed to
bring in good and supplies for the increased population. This is a major concern because back in
2000 Floridavoted to eliminate the emissions testing for all vehicles, by discontinuing testing there
is no way to control vehicles which expel excessive amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
Issues arise in construction zones because all the big construction equipment emit lots of pollution
into our air, and by continuing to build roads and construct his rise building we are adding to the
poor air quality instead of reducing it. In addition to this earlier in 2017 Florida suffered a severe
drought, resulting in numerous wildfires spread throughout the state. This resulted in higher than
normal Ozone

Stamp Act Essay
The Stamp Act and the Appropriate Response
The American Revolution was not the consequence of any single event or any single legislation. It
was a result of some combined factors playing against the wellbeing of the colonists and imposed
upon the colonists by the British government. But a series of laws related to taxation which were
passed between 1763 and 1775 can be considered as one of the most important factors which
instigated the American Revolution. It was in respect of responding to such legislations that debate
began on what should be the appropriate nature of such response. For opined that the response to
such impractical and overburdening legislations must be vent through proper ways of discussions

Even though the Stamp Act aroused vehement resistance and although most colonists continued to
accept the authority of the British Parliament in respect of regulating their trades, they insisted
that only their representative assemblies could levy direct, internal taxes, such as the one imposed
by the Stamp Act ( STAMP ACT , n.d.). But their plea was actually overlooked by the British
government which argued that all British subjects enjoyed virtual representation in Parliament,
even if they could not vote for members of Parliament ( STAMP ACT , n.d.). Looking at the
failure of the moderates in forcing the British government to reconsider the taxation process, the
radicals started hinting on extreme measures for repealing the Stamp Act. It is to be noted that
These radical voices warned that the tax was part of a gradual plot to deprive the colonists of their
freedoms and to enslave them beneath a tyrannical regime ( STAMP ACT , n.d.). But still there
were opponents to such radicals but such opposition failed to resist the tide of extreme resistances
that would change the face of American politics

Labor per square foot is the given rate per square foot of floor area. Initial Preparatory Work
involves all actions required to be completed before the contractor can begin working on the
floor. There are three parts to this section. Initially, all the furniture and fixtures (toilet, sinks not
attached to walls) need to be removed. Depending on the quantity/size of furniture/fixtures that
need to be removed, contractors will typically charge between $15 and $50 per hour. Customers
can cut out this cost if they agree to have the items removed prior to the contractor arriving.
However, if it is agreed upon and the items are not removed, the contractor will usually charge
150% of the normal rate, because this will add additional time to the job, causing him to
possibly run behind schedule for another job, and he schedules jobs based on time estimates.
The next part is the removal and disposal of the existing floor. The price for this can range from
$25 to $75 per hour, based on the type of flooring being removed. Carpet and vinyl are easy to
remove, thus would be on the low end. Tile is more difficult because mortar is used to install it
and all of that has to be broken up and removed. Again, the customer can save during this phase if
they do the removal themselves, with the same penalty if not removed prior to the contractor
arrival. The final part of this phase is repairing the subfloor. Costs for this repair vary greatly on
what needs to be repaired, and are usually

  • 2. 18th Amendment Dbq Most people in American feel like they have to do what is justful for our country. Sometimes what we believe is right, can become the complete opposite. On January 16, 1919 the 18th Amendment was passed, but did not come into effect until the following year. This prohibited the manufacturing, distributing, and selling of all alcoholic liquor but didn t prohibit the consumption of intoxicating beverages. When they first passed this document they believed what they were doing was important. To start off, how did history lead up to the banning of alcohol in all fifty states. Then what issues and questions that they had back then, the debate today, and how it let up to a revolution. Finally, what s my opinion and how I interpret the amendment and what is happening today that can relate to this. To begin, how did this amendment become so popular? For a saloon keeper it was hard to earn profit so they sometimes introduced vices such as gambling and prostitution into their establishments in an attempt to earn more. Many Americans considered saloons offensive and for the lower classes. This helped spark a wave of strong religious revivalism that swept through the United States in the 1820 s and 1830 s. Hundreds protested against alcohol which was driven by mostly religious groups who call alcohol and drunkenness a national cruse . Many of the followers believe if they abolish it that abuse and violence would end causing a sober nation. The first temperance legislation appeared ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In 1819 Kashmir was conquered by the Sikh ruler Ranjit Singh. Following the First Anglo Sikh War in 1845 and 1846, Kashmir was first ceded by the Treaty of Lahore to the East India Company, and shortly after sold by the Treaty of Amritsar to Gulab Singh, Raja of Jammu, who thereafter was given the title Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir. From then until the Partition of India, Kashmir was ruled by the Hindu Maharajas of the princely state of Kashmir and Jammu although... Pakistan always keep same just Jammu and Kashmir is occupied territory exception of India. Pakistan seas fire signed under the coercive pressure. And is here no legal and moral justification. And because the UN security council also accept the self deternation of the Kashmiri people and that s way UN resolution still alive and effective. Atal Bihari Vajpai visited to Pakistan in January 1999, because Bhartia Janta Party always tried to solve Kashmir issue. Vajpai came in Pakistan by bus service. Prime Minister Nawaz Shareef and Bihari Vajpai signed a declaration that called Lahore Declaration. In that time raised Kargil issue in October 1999, taken over by the Chief of Army Staff. When Musharaf was President of Pakistan, he invited by Atal Bihari Vajpai (PM of India). They signed a declaration in July 2002, at Agrah, that is called Agra summit. These are the efforts was made by the Pakistan. 4)POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS OF KASHMIR DISPUTE: Several options have been proposed for solution of the Kashmir dispute but this intricate problem has remained un solved causing enormous financial and material costs to all parties to the conflict. • 4. Contemporary Theories Of Subcultures A subculture is considered a group of dominant people or culture that has been defined in its norms, values, and interests, which are often inconsistent to those of large groups. (Bohm Vogel, 2011) Subcultures were created when a group of people that share the same beliefs or circumstances finds themselves cut off from society. (Bohm Vogel, 2011) These groups are distinct from those of the majority and are held by a group into a broader society. Most subcultures are recognized by their age of its members, or by race, ethnicity, class, gender, and their qualities that may be aesthetic, religious, occupational, political, and sexual or a combination of these factors. However, people create subcultures as a way to feel accepted while also signifying that they are different from other groups. The subculture theory focuses on consistent distinctiveness, identity, commitment, and autonomy. The first subculture group I would like to recognize is the police they are law enforcement officers with specific types of attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. I place them in the subculture category because of they spend their time dealing with crime; therefore they tend to be judgmental towards members of the public viewing them as untrustworthy and potentially hostile; therefore, the public view the police as being unreliable and abusive as well. The police depend on their cohorts to back them up, and mostly teamwork to apprehend criminals; therefore, it creates a dynamic of police ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It also stimulates competition rational individuals will naturally want more primary goods for themselves , and will be willing to compete for these. This is vital to a healthy economy because it prevents stagnating monopolization by individuals. One weakness in Rawls theory is his assumption that the individual in the Original Position will think conservatively. Realistically, the individual is supposedly more likely to risk a slightly worse worst case scenario for a markedly better best case scenario (similar to the large numbers of individuals who gamble money in hope of winning more) . The individual may choose to dismiss the Difference Principle in favour of a riskier, but more beneficial principle for example, that the rich get richer . Rawls argues that the individual will adopt conservatism to ensure that all parties may pursue their own ends irrespective of (dis)advantages, simply because of their arbitrary placement in society. It may also be plausibly argued that the gravity of the situations differs, and that when charged with the creation of a society, one is more likely to act conservatively because the dGBgbGGBecision carries potentially negative, far reaching ramifications. It is similarly asserted that Rawls Maximin Principle may eliminate beneficial inequalities . For example, should the annual income of two people be $100,000 each, this would be a less prosNGGANGNAperous system than one where one person ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Presidential Debates Television and the purpose of it has changed in a negative way throughout the years. At the beginning, we took advantage of being able to be a part of the presidential elections and acquire the facts about what truly mattered during the debates. Lately we ve started to look at what the screen is showing us rather than concentrating on what it was actually telling us. We as people have begun to want to appoint our official leaders based on who looks better and televisionhas helped feed this desire for the worst. Technology has been changing progressively from the start. Everything about it ranging from the speed, the design, the size has been replaced with a modernized and immaculate version. Computers, phones, and televisions all started... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first way they make this possible is to groom and primp their image. Theodore White thought that Kennedy benefited because his image on television was crisp ; Nixon s light colored suit, wrong makeup, bad posture was fuzzed (Source C). He is saying that Kennedy acknowledged the fact that his appearance made a big difference in how the people looked at him and he made sure that he was up to par with his looks. Another way they make their appearance look better in comparison is to draw attention away from themselves and attack their opponent s character. This technique is referred to as ad hominem and it is one of the most common ones used in this year s presidential debates. A prime example of this is when Donald Trump once said, Unstable Hillary Clinton, lacks the judgment, temperament and moral character to lead this country and I believe that so strongly, he then later continued with, She s really pretty close to unhinged, and you ve seen, you ve seen it a couple times. The people in the background know it, the people who know her know it and she s like an unbalanced person. In this claim he has completely left the topic of what truly matters and has started to stray away from it in an attempt to make Hillary seem inferior. All of this is a battle of image over image. Louis Menand wrote, Our national politics has become a competition for images or between images, rather than between ideals (Source C). II.Whether it is possible to recover emotional damages against a veterinarian for veterinary malpractice, under Texas law, when a horse owner suffers emotional stress after witnessing her horse have a serious reaction to a vaccine. Ms. Perez was particularly apprehensive with the West Nile vaccine, because Clementine had experienced severe reactions to both brands currently on the market. The first vaccine caused the mare to colic and the second vaccine caused neurological symptoms. After the mare s reaction to the second vaccine, the mare s previous veterinarian administered medications to counteract the reaction. He recorded the mare s reactions and treatments to both of the vaccines in his records, which remained at the clinic when he sold his practice to Dr. Hou. He suggested taking preventative measures to minimize any allergic reactions. He informed Ms. Perez about a third vaccine that was in development, in which he was optimistic about because it seemed to produce far fewer reactions. Once Dr. Hou took over the veterinary practice, Ms. Perez called Dr. Hou s office to set up an appointment. After futile attempts to speak with the veterinarian, Dr. Hou s receptionist agreed to pass on Ms. Perez s message to Dr. Hou, requesting that he bring the newly developed vaccine. Several weeks later, Dr. Hou arrived at Ms. Perez s barn for a consultation. I don t know why I wanted to go I guess I just agreed to go cause everyone else was, It s not like we were going to get a pet anyway. Everyone was talking I wasn t paying attention. I was just staring and imagining that everyone was racing to get to one place. My sister started to try and get my attention. Hey Will, when we get there do you wanna see the fish with me? . Sure, I said just thinking about my old dog and how I would ride on her when I was really young and weighed less than her. Her name was Samantha, Sam. I loved her more than anything even more than my parents. When we had to put her down I was heart broken. I would never feel the way I felt with her ever again. Even just thinking of her makes me sad now, until I saw her. I stepped out of my car thinking about Sam. Ashley, do you ever think of Sam, I said without getting teary eyed. Will, you know we all do. She responded, and she was right, I always dreamed that Sam would come back. As I stepped inside I looked at the tall shelves filled with animal materials. I walked around in the bird sections and tried to get the birds to talk to me. The fur of the birds looked sleek every feather more pretty than the next. I next when down to the fish aquarium thing. • 10. Burton Chapter 4 One thematic motif that emerges in chapter 6 of Burton and chapter 4 of Olstein is the concept of connections and genealogy. Specifically, in chapter 4 of Olstein, he discusses the use of comparing and connecting as a historiographical methodology that has been both used and challenged by historians since its creation. In addition, in chapter 6 of Burton, she is discussing genealogyor the historyof how X or Y came to be, was shaped, emerged (Burton, pg. 73). In other words, Burton contextualizes genealogy by defining it as a backstory. In chapter 4 of Olstein, he notes early in the chapter, that comparative history has been on the defense since its institutionalization (Olstein, pg. 83). This demonstrates that this is a highly contested historical methodology that is yet to be widely accepted by historians. This might have to do with various historian s interpretations of what comparative and connective history means. For example, Sanjay Subrahmanyan disagrees with Victor Lieberman s... In other words, Subrahmanyan sees Lierberman s work as merely comparing and contrasting different regions and argues that there is greater importance in looking at how each region is not only different but also are connected through various means, such as for trade. Olstein quantifies comparative history by stating it must have at least two units to compare, and that comparative history is quantitative more than conceptual (Olstein, pg. 88). Through this analysis of two or more units, we see that comparative history is converging with another methodology that Olstein discusses in other chapters, which is historical sociology. • 11. Canada s Role In Ww2 In the final two years of the Second World War, Canadian operations was astonishing from the simple growth and expansion of the RCN, working alongside Britain to engage in and manage convoy protection. Canada s naval contribution was essential over U Boat attacks on shipping, and because of such undertakings, Canadian naval officers conducted an ultimately successful campaign to have Canadas efforts in the Battle of the Atlantic acknowledged by the creation of an independent Canadian command in the northwest Atlantic. In December 1942, Canada successfully won an administrative battle to gain responsibility for the distribution of all intelligence concerning convoys under Canadian control, and because of complex additions to the Enigma machines... Moving forward, it is also highly unlikely that Britain would have survived after the Battle of Britain had the Royal Canadian Navy not been assisting merchant convoys crossing the Atlantic from the US and Canada. The air effort presented similar trends as the RCN in May 1945, there were 784 aircraft in Coastal command, with 511 used against submarines and the rest for enemy attacks. Approximately 153,000 flight personnel were trained out of a total of 239,761 that were engaged in British and Commonwealth flying operations, a pivotal choice in gaining air superiority victory over the sky would never have happened so quickly without Canada s involvement. The RCAF famously worked with the RCN throughout the Battle of Britain, the attempt by the German war machine to destroy Britain s Royal Air Force (RAF) and prepare for invasion after already conquering most of Europe, including France, which was one of Canada s first campaigns during the first nine months or so of war. Founded in 1924, the RCAF was the smallest of Canada s services when war broke out in 1939. Attempts to expand and improve the force up until 1935 were futile, only growing from 569 to 1,031 personnel, just enough for the needs of war. The Second World War undoubtedly established an aircraft industry and the progression of civil aviation formed a reserve of skilled pilots from a developed training scheme established in Canada. The inauguration of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP) took place, a strategy conceived by Prime Minister King to train pilots and flight personnel in Canada, so that the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) would remain a safe distance away from the fighting in Europe and North Africa. • 12. Essay on Working in Groups and Social Loafing Social loafing is the effect that people will exert less effort if they are working in a collective environment. Working in groups is an integral part of everyday life because it happens in almost every context whether it is sports teams, organizational groups, project groups and even juries. Therefore it is important to understand the underlying factors that influence this construct. The current research composed of 20 participants, investigated the social loafingeffect of two working conditions: Coactive and Collective. It was hypothesized that collective groups would have significantly lower scores than coactive and the results supported this prediction strongly as there was a significant difference between the groups. These results... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore it is important to understand the factors that motivate or demotivate individuals in those contexts in order to improve the collective outcomes that could generally be critiqued as unreliable or invalid due to the social loafing effect. Previous studies have indicated that the type of cognitive task performed mediates the effect social loafing. For example in challenging tasks that involved brainstorming or generating an ideas, the work teams had an opportunity to contribute their own unique ideas that made it more likely that they suffered consequences of social loafing (Robbins, 1995). Personal involvement has been said to mediate the effects of social loafing. This is a situation where the subjects have intrinsic value or personal meaning that play an important role in the participants lives (Brickner et al., 1986) As a result, high involvement subjects produced more favourable thoughts whereas low involvement did not. Weldon and Gargano (1988) suggested that anonymity is associated with group performance. Basically, the larger the group the more difficult it is to monitor individual performance thus individual efforts are unknown and they are free to loaf without fear of social judgment (Weldon Gargano, 1988). Therefore it is consistent to say that although social loafing is expected to occur in most collective tasks, this can be decreased or even eliminated if the group performance is being compared to other ... • 13. Deucalion Compare And Contrast Favour Owolabi Mrs. Henderson Honors World Lit. February 3, 2015 Mankind s Death and Rebirth Being an honorable person is an important attribute to many people. Noah and Deucalion were two highly honorable men. These men and their families were the only two men out of thousands to survive a fate that changed mankind forever. Noah was a man from Babylon who feared God and found favor in His sight. Deucalion was a man from Greece who pleased the gods and was able to stay pure in his heart. Both men had many similar attributes and purposes for life, but each had differences that made their stories unique. A commonality in both stories is that mankind harbored evil in their hearts and had no regard for God/Zeus provoking their wraths. According to the Grecian flood story, men became unbearably wicked and no longer lived at peace with each other. They were always at war with each other having no law or safety in the land. In the Bible, God saw how evil men were and how there was nothing but immorality in mans heart. The depravity and iniquity of man are what led to God and Zeus s wrath. Men became lawless, it was as if every man was for themselves. This corruption is what made God and Zeus to become weary and to regret ever creating man. A kleptoparasitic relationship means that ravens steal the prey that the wolves have caught. Hayes et al. Why is Samuel unpleasant to the request of the Israelites to set a King? 1 When Samuel became old, he made his sons judges over Israel. 2 The name of his firstborn son was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judges in Beer sheba. 3 Yet his sons did not follow in his ways, but turned aside after gain; they took bribes and perverted justice. 4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah, 5 and said to him, You are old and your sons do not follow in your ways; appoint for us, then, a king to govern us, like other nations. 6 But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, Give us a king to govern us. In contrast, Marvin Sweeney, the professor of the Hebrew Bible in Claremont School of Theology, asserts, Although the narrative can hardly be considered anti monarchic, it takes care to raise concerns about the character of kingship and its costs to the nation at large and it demands that proper kingship in Israel must be exercised in accordance with the divine will. The frontal pose and symmetrical composition have recurred in many images of Christ, particularly in the form of the vera icon, or true image (Strieder14). No architectural setting appears within the plain, black background of the painting (Hutchison 67). The darkened tone and limited but unified color scheme create a mood of sanctity (Hutchinson 68). • 22. Human Activities And Its Effects On The Ocean Tides Essay Estuaries An estuary is a partially enclosed body of water formed where the freshwater from the land mixes and meets with saltwater from the sea. As a result, the salinity and water level among various other factors, is dependent on the ocean tides. 80% of the world s cities are situated near an estuary. For its abundance in resources are crucial to to the longevity of the cities. It is recognized globally as one of the most threatened ecologies in the world. Human activities such as agriculture, waste water processing, land clearance, introduction of exotic species have rapidly increased the erosion rate of rivers, and have redirected river flows both into and within estuaries. This in turn leads to its accelerated aging process. Sediments from rivers upstream are rapidly surging into the estuary at a rate more than the tide could erode away. Estuaries that exist without human activities collect a net sediment layer of 1 millimetre per year. This is directly juxtaposed to the poorly maintained estuaries disrupted by human activities, gaining a staggering net sediment layer of 20 millimetres per year. Eventually this causes many estuarine ecologies to decay and render them incapable of supporting life. The estuarine ecology is a spawning pool for many coastal organisms. Both visiting and local species raise their young within the estuarine habitat. • 34. Mark Edmundson On The Uses Of Modern Education Summary On the Criticisms of Modern Education There are courses that students take in order to earn credit, and most require essays. Each essay that is submitted is expected to follow a set of rules, with students obligated to follow these rules and to create an end product that encompasses the expectations set forth by their teacher. The following summary and response to Mark Edmundson s work follows most of the rules, though it may not meet expectations set forth by a single teacher. Some risks are worth taking, even if it may seem to jeopardize the educational path students feel obliged to follow. Using his experiences with students who follow rules, Edmundson makes many misguided judgments about the passions, individuality, and educational decisions of students. On the Uses of a Liberal Education by Mark Edmundson examines the relationship between the ways of college students and the universities they attend. He states that students lack passion and avoid taking educational chances to challenge themselves. Edmundson also has the idea that all of his students, except for a few outliers, are cowardly and unwilling to pursue higher paths of education. According to Edmundson, the universities are to blame; the main purpose of the universities being to appease the wants and needs of students. This consumer culture created by universities is unknowingly perpetuated by the students who wish to attend. Edmundson concludes with ideas of how to improve this relationship: getting rid ... • 35. King Leopold s Ghost Analysis King Leopold s Ghost a story of greer, terror and heroism in colonial africa written by Adam Hochschild, reveals the hidden horror in the Congo. Hochschild conveys the exploitation of the Congo Free State by King Leopold II of Belgium from 1885 to 1908, as well as the revolting brutality during that period. Hochschild discloses how King Leopold II s unpleasant and atrocious capacity of maliciousness is shown through mass killings and colonization of Congolese land. The Ghost of King Leopold II still plagues the world while he is celebrated as a great humanitarian. (use own words). Part One: Walking Into Fire In the first part of Hochschild s book, he describes the actions and desires that led King Leopold to seize the Congo Free State, the rules he broke and how he manipulated the nations with his righteousness of combating slavery even though figured such as George Williams and ____ began speaking out against him. Hochschild describes King Leopold II as rude, revolting and awkward as he was growing up. His characteristics only began to drift towards persuasive and cunning when he discovered his curiosity in the colonization of new land. Conveniently, many European countries had no interest in colonization. When Leopold gained power, and searched for his lovely colony, their ambivalence resulted in him creating a colony on his own account. Leopold never actually stepped foot in Congo, he had used explorers such as Stanley Mortan and other white men to establish the colony for him. To sneakily undergo his objectives without other countries noticing, he created organizations in which he could operate under. For instance, the International African Association to stop the outspread of slavery. Leopold additionally hosted conference meetings to speak on human rights. If he was to seize anything in Africa, he could do so only if he convinced everyone that his interest was purely altruistic . (46) King Leopold succeeded at convincing every one of his goodwill, that he was supported financially from the Belgian government in introducing free trade and religion in the Congo. The meaning of Baleen is made out of keratin, the same protein that makes up our fingernails and hair. They make up one of two whale suborders within the cetacean family. Baleen whales are mammals, which means that they are warm blooded and breathe air using their lungs. That sounds interesting considering that they live in ocean waters, but they have two blowholes at the top of their body that allows them to breathe when they reach the surface of the water. As mammals, they also give birth to a live animal, called a whalecalf. Unlike humans, who can take around one year to learn how to walk, whale calves are born already able to swim. Most baleen ... Lust is typically looked down upon and with caution; on the other hand, it can be seen as the protagonist of different verses. Imagist poet William Carlos Williams approach to love is one society deems unconventional. There are rare occurrences where both of these emotions are used simultaneously to describe what a person once shared with another person. In his poem The Young Housewife, the underlying tone of lust can lead one to conclude that a secret and past relationship, full of love and lust, existed between the speaker and a woman. The poem begins with the speaker seeing the housewife in her nightgown through the window, at ten A.M., and within that moment she walked outside her house still dressed in her negligee. This suggests that the young housewife saw the speaker of the poem driving past her house through the window. When the speaker mentions the housewife was uncorseted, it indicates the lust the speaker has imagined when her body was seen since being uncorseted has to do with the noticing and looking the upper body of a woman. The speaker describes the young housewife tucking in the strands of her hair showing that the speaker of the poem was able to get a look at the young housewife s appearance. Coercion by Douglas Rushkoff Introduction: They Say The first part of the book introduces the idea of they, the people who seek to influence our lives in some form or fashion, and it poses questions about our collective cultural behaviors that have become an everyday event. The author introduces himself to us the readers. He also expresses his reason for writing the book by pointing to the backfire effect his previous books. Because he was a media/advertisement consultant, he acts as a double agent writing down and reporting the coercive practices from everyday people to large corporations. And that is exactly what he does in the book. He does not reach to conclusions and point at the responsible parties, but instead he strictly reports the facts, although no... To make people quickly sign the contract for the car, Jim tried to seem like an ally to people. He would tell customers that the big, bad manager made a mistake and that they needed to sign quickly before the manager realized he made the error. Since many of us have caught on to this extremely traumatizing experience, we all live to loathe it. So GM launched a new brand, Saturn, to make the car buying experience less regrettable. Rushkoff says that although this might not seem like coercion, but actually we are coerced into buying a car at fixed price just so that we appear not to get ripped off. The way coercion is really effective is by making it hide so well that the people who sell us things, like the happy, cheerful youths at GAP, do not themselves know that they are coercing. This can be achieved by having ambiguous goals in acrostic poems spelling out the company s name. Another way is mind washing the employees by training courses. These techniques to hide coercion are so well hidden that people actually blame themselves if a store earns less than expected profits or if it goes out of business. First we will look at the evidence for the onset of this event and the proxies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This correlation between IRD and pCO2 is critical since it leads us to the hypothesis that a decline of pCO2 could have driven the climate in the polar regions over a temperature threshold, which enabled the onset of continental glaciers and ice sheets on the surface of the Arctic Sea (St. John 2008). This is only one of many possible reasons of the NHG onset, where other potential causes suggested for the initiation of the NHG are: events of mountain building; plateau uplift in southern Asia and the American West; Volcanic triggering, resulting in aerosols in the atmosphere; and the closure of Panama Seaway, which would have changed the whole ocean circulation and distribution of cold vs. warm ocean water (St. John et al. ... Although I wanted nothing more than to disregard my repeated blunder and never look back, I knew that this strategy would fall short when I performed the piece for my teacher the following day. So with perseverance, focus, and fear of a disapproving glare, I managed to play it through faultlessly. Now all that remained was the small task of playing the piece an additional four times in a row with that same impeccable accuracy. Upon realizing the amount of work ahead of me, I mentally kicked myself for not starting sooner and lengthened my timer from the remaining twelve minutes to another thirty. It was time to woodshed this until I got it right every time. Playing the piano has been a rewarding experience for me throughout my life for not only granting me the skill of playing, but also for teaching me lessons that can be applied to my academic and personal life. One of the most valuable lessons I have learned from piano is the ability of breaking down a seemingly unsolvable problem into its basic components or, in the terms of my piano teacher, woodshedding.
