Philosophical Travel Journal
I am writing this journal with the goal of recounting my travels to different philosophical societies.
Remarkably, each one of the three societies I was privileged enough to travel to r igidly followed a
renowned philosophy. These were the philosophies of Plato, Soren Kierkegaard, and Friedrich
Nietzsche.
The Republic
The first society I visited was that of Plato
s philosophy. The residents were very kind and sought out true meanings of different vi rtues solely by
dialectic. They structured their city much the same way that
Plato structured the renowned
Republic
. Plato said that a just city would involve each man doing his own work, or specializing in a certain
task. The cobbler would be a cobbler, the builder would be a builder, the farmer a farmer, and so on an
d so forth. Each of these focused on his work and in such a way maximized outpu t, as is logical. The
army protecting that city stood as a c ourageous wall around it, ready to defend it whenever necessary.
The soldiers
training was intense, focusing not only on physical exercise but also on the arts. By being brought up
with training both in the arts and in physical exercise,
Plato believed t hese soldiers would be both courageous and wise. Indeed, they were. The city was
very confident in its guardians, knowing full well that should war be declared, it would be re solved
by reason or, if all else failed, a

Tisto Alternate Ending
Tisto entered the arena, one of the few standing buildings on the ruins of Karufr. The planet had
recently been bombarded by the Grandmaster s forces, and the kiffar had decided it would be a good
place to visit due to his own nature. As a scar in the force Tisto had to move around every so often so
he wouldn t lead Inquisitors to the Knights of Allusis and Clan Odan Urr. He moved through the
arena, his leather jacket pushed around by the wind. *Clack* Tisto turned around quickly, grabbing his
saber off his belt. Behind him stood a tall man with a blindfold wrapped around his head. The mans
robes billowed out from behind him, pushed by the wind. Tisto eyed the man suspiciously, not ever
having seen him before. The miraluka Talis looked back at Tisto unsure what to make of him. He
recognized the Knight Commander from when he was Knighted after New Tython was bombarded,
but just like then he was put off by the Knight Commanders appearance. Unlike the normal human
shape aura there was a jagged split in the kiffar s, making him seem very disconnected. Looking him
was disorienting, but after a few seconds Talis began to get used to it. ... Show more content on

Genocide Of The International Criminal Court
Introduction Genocide is defined as violent crimes committed against a group of people with the
intention to destroy the existence of the group. Usually these crimes are committed against racial,
religious, national or ethnical groups. These crimes can vary from simply murder to deliberately
inflicting the group s conditions of life, other crimes such as causing serious bodily or mental harm,
imposing measures to prevent births within the group and forcibly transferring children from the
group to another group. All these crimes are aimed to serve one goal that is destroy the existence of a
certain group, whatever the crime may be it all serves as genocide. In 2002 the International Criminal
Court was established to help prevent crimes against humanity. Genocide is one of those crimes the
court set forth to prevent, although genocide may seem like a crime that must be listed under crimes
against humanity or war crimes, it is the intent of destroying the existence of a certain group that
separates it from similar crimes. Other acts that are related to genocide are also punishable by law,
such as: conspiracy to commit genocide, direct and public incitement to commit genocide, attempt to
commit genocide and complicity in genocide. Some of these laws might seem obvious to some of us,
but the term genocide was only found in 1944 that is after the Second World War (the holocaust). Nazi
Germany or Hitler committed one of the most horrifying genocides in history, killing almost 6

Oppression In John Steinbeck s The Grapes Of Wrath
Introduction On June 6, 2014, two tornadoes tore through the small town of Pilger, Nebraska. After
the storm ended, the residents of the town banded together to rebuild their town. Over the next two
years, the residents of Pilger worked together to rebuild their community with the help of many other
communities around them. Though their town had been destroyed, the community united in the midst
of it all to rebuild their homes (Driscoll). In John Steinbeck s The Grapes of Wrath, the migrant
workers faced opposition from Californian residents. Like the people in Pilger, Nebraska, the migrant
workers worked together to help one another out. In The Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck focuses on the
central idea that when society is against a group of people, the people band together to help one
another out. To accomplish this, Steinbeck uses excellent characterization to show how each of his
unique characters united with others when faced with oppression.

The London Plan And Environmentally Sustainable
How is the London Plan both demographically and environmentally sustainable?
The London Plan, is a complex, yet vital part of the UK s capital cities roots as it contributes to the
efficient day to day running of the city, whilst also aiming to aid sustainable development. The most
recent update to the London Plan was released in 2015 which covered multiple topical issues ranging
from strategic housing, transport, dealing with the pressures of climate change, economic
development, quality of life and managing demographics. The plan is often referred to as a Spatial
Development Strategy (SDS) and is produced by the mayor and his councillors for all 33 London
boroughs. According to National Planning Policy Framework (NPF), a source ... Show more content

In modern day society, especially amongst geographers and planners, the concept of sustainability and
sustainable development is vital when making decisions that effects both people and the environment,
as it involves using today s resources in a way that ensures they are still available for future
generations to come. Sustainable development is an important concept for the future of the world, and
for developments in geography. The idea of sustainable development is a bridge between geography
and compatible disciplines. Beyond that, it is a conduit through which geographers can contribute to a
positive future for life on earth . With that in mind, it is essential that if the London Plan wishes to be
successful, it must consider how they are going to integrate the aspect of sustainability into their
development, especially with the increasing pressures of changing demographics, (e.g.
overpopulation, green belt development and housing crisis s) and climate change heightening the risk
of flooding, increased temperatures, energy issues and drought across not

Q1: Objective of Financial Reporting (From Kieso et al. (2010)
Homer Winslow and Jane Alexander are discussing various aspects of the conceptual framework .
Homer indicates that this pronouncement provides little, if any, guidance to the practicing professional
in resolving accounting controversies. He believes that the
Framework provides such broad guidelines that it would be impossible to apply the objective(s) to
present day reporting problems. Jane concedes this point, but indicates that objective(s) are still
needed to provide a starting point for the standard setter in helping to improve financial reporting.

Comparing The Grimm Brothers And The Little Mermaid
Contrasting the Grimm brother s version and Disney s version of The Little Mermaid.
Although both stories follow along with the same idea, they are entirely two different stories. Having
lesser detail, the original fairy tale was very short and only gave the main character a name, a back
story, and a goal. Disney s interpretation was more decorated and told a much longer, kid friendly
story. The Grimm Brothers created a dark and simple fairy tale that was full of unexpected twists and
turns. Each sentence was very simple, and didn t add unnecessary details. I would like to have read
more about other characters, as it gave zero information on any of the other characters past what kind
of creature they were. I found it really interesting to read something I thought was innocent come from
something so gloomy, and almost depressing. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

was Sirenetta. Ariel has had this obsession with the surface for many years, collecting and gathering
all kinds of objects humans had used. Sirenetta was never allowed close to the sky because she was
not old enough. When she did reach of age, she had to receive a flower so she could breath in

Related Rates Problem
Related rates problems are notorious in calculus. They involve finding the rate at which a quantity
changes. It is June 2017, and I am frantically pedalling in a roundabout in the middle of Stanford s
campus, commonly referred to as the circle of death . The traffic within it is indistinguishable from
Times Square during peak hours. The brick buildings tower overhead, busses and bikes whiz past, and
I push as hard as I can, trying to escape the narrowing asphalt. On this early day of the term, I know
nothing about related rates and I can t seem to get out of this circle of confusion.
Stanford had covered all of my summer term tuition, and I found myself unexpectedly shot out of the
midwest and my tiny rural high school straight into an elite college curriculum. My school of 225
students does not offer any advanced science or math, so I had been taking classes at the local college

Globalize Banking impact on Shock Transmission and Policies: Global study
Abstract
There is a frequent criticism on financial globalization, concerning about economic volatility eventual
increases and interruptions in autonomy of monetary policies. Prior importance and crucial nature of
the situation is linked with the international capital movement and intermediation in funding. One
major issue is that such globalization techniques may get the organizations and countries exposed
towards shocks for economy at the time of limiting the tools relevant to that by policy authorities and
central banks for home and abroad generated shocks. In this paper I have studied and aimed at striving
for globalization and shocks identification in case of banking sector moving of the global and

Strengths And Weaknesses Of Speech Recognition
CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
People use calculators to perform calculations that have a numeric keypad to input the data and a
display to get the result. To overcome this, speech signal can be used to input the data and the result is
an audio signal.
Speech is the vocalized form of human communication. It ranges from 90 Hz to 7,000 Hz. Each
spoken word is created out of the phonetic combination of a limited set of vowel and consonant
speech sound units. The voiced speech of a typical adult male will have a fundamental frequency from
85 to 180 Hz, and that of a typical adult female from 165 to 255 Hz. Thus, the fundamental frequency
of most speech falls below the bottom of the voice frequency band as defined above.
Speech recognition is a process ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Generally the more traing, the higher the perfromance of the system for virtually any task. The
reference pattern are sensitive to the speaking environment and transmission characteristics of the
medium used to create the speech, this is because the speech spectral characteristics are affected by
transmission and background noise. No speech specific knowledge is used explicitly in the system;
hence the method is relatively in sensitive to choice of vocabulary words, task, syntax, and task
semantics. The computational load for both pattern training and pattern classification is generally
linearly proportional to the number of patterns being trained or recognized. Hence computation for a
large number of sound classes could and often does become prohibitive. Because the system is
insensitive to sound class, the basic techniques are applicable to a wide range of speech sounds,
including phrases, whole words and sub word units. The basic set of techniques developed for one
sound class (e.g., words) can generally be directly applied to different sound classes (e.g., subword
units) with little or no modifications to the

Uses And Uses Of Virtualization
Virtualization is being able to give a physical device the power, through the use of software, to do
more than that physical device was technically designed and able to do (Santana, 2014, p. 12). For
example, a server can only run one operating system at a time. However, when a hypervisor is used in
a server, the hypervisor is a layer of software that acts like the server itself so that many operating
systems can be run from that one server. The hardware, in this case a server, has been virtualized. The
goal is to use all of the computer s resources all of the time, and the only way to do that is to have
enough things running that the resources are being used consistently and efficiently. An analogy for
this could be online classes. If each teacher only had one student, the teacher s resources of time and
expertise would not be utilized efficiently because that one student will not need help all day, every
day. If the teacher is assigned to fifteen students, the students can still get help when needed from the
teacher, and they would not even be aware that they are not alone in the class. Because it is an online
class, the teacher does not need any more physical resources to teach an entire class than was needed
for one student. The students are receiving the benefits of being taught by that teacher without needing
to be with him or her physically. 2. Please define, in your own words, what a data center is and what
virtualization means in this environment. Data

Immigration, Offshoring And American Jobs Essay

Immigration
In 2014, President Obama claimed, For more than 200 years, our tradition of welcoming immigrants
from around the world has given us a tremendous advantage over other nations. It s kept us youthful,
dynamic, and entrepreneurial. It has shaped our character as a people with limitless possibilities
(Office of the Press Secretary, 2014). What makes the United States the United States? Our country s
success and culture comes from the power of immigrants. But this is not to brag about our historical
foundation, rather talk about immigration being a significant variable in our economy. First,
immigration brings creative ideas to the American economy. Immigrants bring their culture from their
homelands, and it strengthens the population by enriching their ideas (Kelly, 2013). In addition, it
creates more jobs. The study, Immigration, Offshoring and American Jobs by Professor Ottaviano of
Bocconi University and Professor Peri of the UC Davis, notes that low skilled immigrants usually fill
gaps in American labor markets and generally enhance domestic business prospects rather than
destroy jobs (Cowen, 2010). In addition, immigrants including the unauthorized people create jobs
through their purchasing power and entrepreneurship. (American Immigration Council, 2015).
According to the Economic Report of the President, immigration added roughly 0.2 percent to GDP:
$31.4 billion (American Immigration Council, 2015). To sum it up, a study by the

The Journalism Feeds On Curiosity
Journalism feeds on curiosity. One week I am fact checking a story on rock climbing for Outside
magazine, and the next week I find myself on top of a 40 foot wall. Every news assignment becomes a
crash course in a new subject. Every idea for a feature leads to twenty more questions and ten more
stories. Journalism is an addictive adventure an adventure I ve known I wanted to pursue since I was
in kindergarten. Yet instead of feeling like I ve been stuck on the same career path for 16 years, I feel
like each day, each article, is a new venture. I am pursuing a master s in International Politics at
Trinity College Dublin because the heart of journalism isn t in the writing or the editing it s how well
you know the topics on which you are reporting.
Shortly after entering college, I found a second love in political science, and my academic interests
began to merge with my passion for the news. I am now working toward a career as political reporter,
and more specifically, an international correspondent who serves to connect readers in the U.S. to
European news. Ultimately, I hope to be the chief of a news bureau in a large European capital such as
Dublin or Belfast. My interest in foreign policy and international affairs sparked even more
adventures, from researching education policy in Santiago, Chile, to nervously teaching a room of
fellow undergraduates for the first time.
Following my first year at college, I jumped on the opportunity to take an internship with a

Parents With Bereavement
Helping Parents with Bereavement in order to Help Children
The single biggest protective factor facilitating early parental loss and poor physical and mental health
outcomes is the presence of a supportive, nurturing parent who models healthy grief and supports the
child s emotional expression (Lueken, Kraft, Appelhans, Enders, 2009; Lueken Lemery, 2004;
Worden, 1996). Werner Lin Biank (2012), set out to teach parents how to appropriately model grief, to
engage with children in their expressions of sadness, and to provide the family with resources and
coping skills. As previously stated, children that experience parental loss are at a high risk of a variety
of succeeding health and mental health problems (Bruskus, 2008; Dyregrov Yule ... Show more

It is important to recognize the fact that children with developmental disoders experience grief even
though their experessions of grief may be very different from their nondisabled peers or siblings. It is
also important to recognize aggressive and self harming behaviors. An increase in frustration and
compulsiveness, difficulties in relationships, somatic complaints, and withdrawal should be seen as
possible expressions of grief instead of as part of the child s disability (Bonell Pascual et al., 1999;
Kauffman, 2005; Lavin, 1989). Due to the fac that developmentally disabled children have trouble
understanding abstract concepts, they may need information about death and dying to be
communciatied through various mediums and to include multi sensory pieces to ensure
comprehension. Using phrases such as, He is with God , should be avoided in order to lessen the
chances of confusing the child. Developmentally disabled children are concrete thinkers and death
should be explained as simply and clearly as possible. Understand that responses to grief may
manifest themselves in a range of emotions, cognitions, behaviors, and physical reactions. Using
materials that the child can see, such as a feelings chart to help the him or her identify and describe
their responses may be beneficial. Talk to the child abou the purpose of rituals like wakes, memorials,
and funerals, being very detailed about what the child is to expect. Use of pictures, photographs, or
story books is encouraged in order to familiarize the child with new words and activities related to
death. Shielding children from the reality of death and mourning rituals should be limited as such
protective treatment may prohibit the child s coping efforts and grief reactions, leaving them at a
higher risk for developing psychiatric problems

Types Of Stress And Loss
Everyone at any given age is faced with different types of stress and loss. As human beings we
continuously evolve onto the next phase of our lives, which bring on new challenges and stress.
Ziegler (2014) indicated that it s a reminder that adult development encompasses both growth and
decline (Ziegler, 2014). Unfortunately, not everyone is equipped to deal with stress, consequently
resorting to maladaptive coping skills, such as: self indulging in over eating, smoking, and drinking
alcohol. Likewise, when dealing with loss, there are maladaptive coping skills, which are similar as
the ones described for stress, but also some may lash out or avoidance. On the other hand, others
adaptively and resiliently bounce back (Zeigler, 2014). Pollack (1988) stated, no matter how difficult
the situation, I will eventually find a way to cope with it (Pollack, 1988, p. 17). Pollack, is the example
of a person who through optimism, a good support network, resilience, and stress related growth, she
was able to get through stressful time by coping with the loss successfully (Ziegler, 2014). In 1988,
Pollack shares her own experience of losing her husband to colon cancer and how she managed to get
herself and family through it. I particularly learned something interesting about Pollack s experience,
as she stated, that she was grieving, long before his death (Pollack, 1988). Therefore, as she dealt with

The French Revolution In Haiti
Haiti splits the island of Hispaniola with its neighbor, the Dominican Republic in the Greater Antilles
of the Caribbean Sea. Established by Spain in 1492, control of Haiti was ceded to the French and the
island began to flourish under its new rulers. The slave trade played an enormous part of the country s
history, at the time accounting for nearly a third of the entire slave trade across the Atlantic. Controlled
for years by the French, Haiti then called Saint Domingue was the Pearl of the Antilles, one of the
richest islands in France s empire. In the 1780s, Haiti exported 60% of all the coffee and 40% of all
the sugar consumed in Europe: more than all of Britain s West Indian colonies combined, (Henley,
2010). It wasn t until nearly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Due to the ongoing French Revolution back at home, the war ended in 1803. The French simply could
not afford to be fighting two wars at once. On January 1, 1804, the first, and only, country born of a
slave revolt, was born. However, this was not the end of French involvement. France demanded 150
million francs in reparations for the war in order to be recognized as a republic. Von Tunzelmann, a
contributor to the article by Henley, said that ...Haiti was paying reparations to France from 1825 until
1947. It took out huge loans from American, German and French banks. By 1900, Haiti was spending
about 80% of its national budget on loan repayments. By the time the original reparations and interest
were paid off, the place was basically destitute and trapped in a spiral of debt, (Henley, 2010). Tired of
dealing with a failed government, another revolution began in 1911. This revolution led to a long
period of US occupation. Following failed dictators, regimes, and governments, François ¬ Papa Doc
Duvalier became the leader of Haiti in 1957. His regime was one of darkness, death, and oppression,
considered one of the worst in the history of the

Essay On Veteran Stigma
What do we mean when we say veteran stigma? We don t mean public perception of former service
members.
We mean the stigma of you denying available resources because you don t consider yourself veteran
enough. Here are examples: I m not society s idea of a veteran . I never even deployed.
Look, not everyone is an operator, and you don t have to try to be. Perpetuating and idolizing
unnecessary machismo is a disservice to those who have served. The military industrial complex is an

Embrace the camaraderie you had when you were in, find other veterans like you, and help each other

of self harm. Standing by without action is a no go and is completely unsat.
We know that being a veteran doesn t define you; you re a person first. But you are veteran for life,
and that comes with a bit of responsibility:
We re creating our own buddy system through our product, so we could look out for each other. We all
know it is more difficult to reflect on our own mental health, than to notice a difference in a buddy s
behavior. We can tell when a buddy is drinking too much or whenever they are in need of help;
whether it is financially, emotionally, or just might need someone to talk to it is always more obvious
to us than them. So quit your bullshit. We re here to help you, and allow yourself to help your

Col. George Armstrong Custer revealed the presence of gold in the Black Hills in front of the whole
nation, which made the government regret their agreement of giving the Black Hills and other lands to
the Sioux. The whites from the peace party and many other parties, didn t like it, and said that the

Custer cut his hair short, so that no one can recognize him, and nobody recognized him. After some
point Custer realized that the Indians weren t running away, in fact, they intend to kill him. Although,
Custer knew that he had entered the valley of death, but he kept fighting, but he enjoyed himself till
his last breathe. For Custer s men s were so exhausted after that long journey they were barely in the
position to stand, they had only tiredness, horror, and death. As for Maj. Reno he could have charged
the Indians, which could have resulted in disarray, but he didn t. Hence, Indians chased him to the
Little Big Horn where he hardly survived. The entry of Crazy Horse is still not confirmed, some say
he seized Custer on the high ground, but it was Gall, the Hunkpapa warrior, and his men were
successful in turning Reno back and harassed Custer so badly that the 7Th Cavalry; the soldiers, never

Leadership That Gets Results By Daniel Goleman Essay
In the article Leadership that Gets Results, Daniel Goleman suggests that there is a relationship
between three concepts: the elements of emotional intelligence, the six leadership styles, and an
organization s climate. Describe the way he believes that these concepts influence each other. You may
include a drawing with boxes, arrows, and the like if that helps you to explain your thinking.
Ultimately, he argues that these concepts influence organizational performance. Do you think he
makes a compelling case for his position? The article of Leadership That Gets Results provides the six
leadership styles for individuals to understand how leadership styles influence on an organization s
climate. Furthermore, the six leadership styles are consisted of the emotional intelligence: self
awareness, self management, social awareness, and social skill. Therefore, these three concepts, such
as the six leadership styles, the elements of emotional intelligence, and an organization s climate, will
influence each other because the research found that individuals with different emotional intelligence
competencies will have distinct leadership styles. Subsequently, with the distinct leadership styles,
leaders will utilize their own leadership styles to lead their group, team, division, or corporation. Thus,
it will bring about a unique impact on an organization s climate and in turn, on its financial
performance (Goleman, 2000, p.79). Moreover, leaders with their own emotional

Literature Review On Bullying And School Based Shootings
Literature Review
Introduction
This section will be review the testing the credibility of several studies as they relate to bullying and
school based shootings. One study will depict how bullying persists in groups and another will
demonstrate the frequency of bullying, whether it occurs more in the home or in a school related
setting. It is through evidence we will examine the presence of bullying and the impact it has on the
student body.
Review of Research
The National Center for Education and Statics (NCVS) is a survey that was administered to
individuals ages 12 or older who lived within one household or institute. The survey is conducted
annually by the United States Census Bureau. It focuses primarily on non fatal crimes reported or
unreported to the local authorities. From the research, families are provided quality information
needed each year to protect themselves from those deemed harmful in their neighborhood. Data
collected from this survey gives the government a glimpse of the crime rate in specific populations. In
2005, DeVoe and Kaffenberger (2005) conducted a correlational study to verify a direct correlation
between bullying in school age children (12 18) and aggressive behaviors toward other students. They
used both the 2001 School Crime Supplement (SCS) and well as the National Crime Victimization
Survey (NCVS). This study examined 24,315,000 male and female children. The SCS suggested that
bullying could possibly be used as a way to establish

The Training Session With Other It Staff, The Chief...
In the upcoming training session with other IT staff, the Chief Information Officer (CIO) wants to
have a summary of normalizing databases included. The summary will include the steps needed to
convert a database into First Normal Form, Second Normal Form, and Third Normal Form. An
example will be used to show the reasons for converting the college database into these forms.
Another example will include a time when denormalize of a table is acceptable in a database. The
business rules of the college will impact the database normalization and a decision to denormalize the
tables.
When databases are created, data are stored in the fields of a database, some databases are simple and
may contain one table. As the database grows there and get more complex, the tables will need to be
normalized. According to Coronel, Morris, and Rob (2013), normalization is a process for evaluating
and correcting table structures to minimize data redundancies, thereby reducing the likelihood of data
anomalies, (p.181). There are different forms the database table can be converted to, which for the
training session will be limited to three, the First Normal Form (1NF), Second Normal Form (2NF),
and Third Normal Form (3NF). The 1NF is a table format which has no repeating groups and the
primary key (PK) has been identified, the 3NF includes the 1NF with no partial dependencies, and the
3NF includes 2NF and no transitive dependencies. To convert a table to 1NF, need to look at the table

A Case Study of the Marketing Strategies of Aldus Corporation
Introduction In this short paper, this author will look at the Aldus Corporation and the company s
marketing manager, Richard Strong. Despite the riskiness of the proposal, he correctly identified some
foreseeable problems that required a shift in the company s market positioning strategy. In this short
essay, we will examine this positioning strategy in detail as well as the other marketing issues at
Aldus. As well will see in this study, while the plan was necessary due to the upcoming saturation of
the existing market for professionals, the situation on the ground in the company was not geared
favorably in a structural manner to facilitate the proposed transition. Had more knowledge been
available of this, modifications to the plan could have made the transition much smoother. Luckily
enough, Apple came to the rescue for Aldus in pairing up on some of the responsibility for helping
with the market repositioning. Positioning Strategy at Aldus Marketing is very dynamic and strong
leaders must realize that as consumer tastes and buying habits are unique and change constantly on an
ongoing basis. Richard Strong realized this and proposed to separate Aldus PageMaker into two major
divisions to reflect the graphics professional and business users needs in this change. The new features
would be made available in each of the product lines and would then depend upon the needs of the
latter that were identified for each of the market segments. A graphics professional

Alfred Hitchcock Blackmail Essay
Early forms of creative filmmaking such as German Expressionism and Soviet montage theory are
considered to have a rich definitive film history. These films are remembered as having
distinguishable techniques, emphasis on images, rhythmic montage, heavy editing, shadows and mise
en scene. By examining film history, complications with film archiving, theoretical perspectives and
Alfred Hitchcock s Blackmail. This essay will determine whether the most frequently viewed mode of
filmmaking, Hollywood cinema, can be considered as having a definitive film history. Although there
is a trend in films produced in 1917 1960, Blackmail being one example of a film with classic
Hollywood Cinema elements. I disagree that Hollywood Cinema has a definitive ... Show more

In 1929, Hitchcock released Blackmail, the first all talkie film from Great Britain. Although the film
was not produced in Hollywood, it is still considered as Hollywood cinema as it exhibits the stylistic
traits identified in The Classical Hollywood Cinema. These devices include linear timelines, unstable
equilibriums, psychologically motivated characters, shot/reverse shot, continuity editing and three
point lighting. Furthermore, this supports the perspective that there is a definitive history of
Hollywood cinema. Blackmail fits within the time period of Hollywood cinema, whilst also displaying
the forms narrative and cinematography techniques. However, Blackmail also mimics prominent
features associated with German Expressionism and Soviet Montage, such as mise en scene, dramatic
lighting and shadows. In one scene in Blackmail, Hitchcock manipulates the use of shadows when an
Artist, sexually assaults a young woman called Alice. He stands in his room after being refused a kiss,
coated in the shadows of the set looming over his face. The prominent use of shadows, create a
visually uneasy atmosphere and convey a narrative without dialogue. Hitchcock s use of shadow
manipulation is comparable to the importance of shadows in many famous German Expressionist
films, Nosferatu (1922) and The Cabinet of Dr Caligari (1920). Hitchcock himself stated that he had
acquired a strong German influence by working at the UFA studios in Berlin . Therefore, it can be
argued that Hollywood cinema does not have a definitive history. The examples Bordwell and
Thompson use in Film History: An Introduction supports the perspective within one form of history,
Hollywood cinema. However, it is evident that some films which fit perfectly within the Hollywood
cinema definition, include traits of German Expressionism. The film history is blurred and not
definitive or exclusive to one

Why Do Jewish Women Join Partisan Groups
Jewish women fighting within the partisan groups faced an uphill battle in their attempt to gain respect
and find their place within the group. Being both Jewish and women, just gaining access into the
group was difficult but then once they were in, they faced being bound by traditional feminine role
and the threat of sexual abuse. Many partisan women though, did not let racism, and sexism define
them and proved themselves valuable through their work ethics, skills, and strength. Through several
stories we have learned about, we can see the heroism that these women showed and how they broke
away from the traditional roles that women were expected to play, shattering the stereotypes that were
put on them. These women survived not only being a partisan but also the evil twins of anti Semitic
and sexual violence (JPEF1). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many Jewish women did not join the partisans out of fear, and felt that their role was to remain loyal
to their family, even if that meant death, and many men agreed with this. We see this with Meyer
Orbuch who refused to take his sister into his partisan group saying, no girls can go with us. Only
boys can go (JPEF2). So the women that did join partisans were already breaking free of the
traditional roles that many people felt they should be playing as women. Women that joined the
partisans wanted to live, and to avenge the humiliation that had been thrown upon them and their
families. This concept of women wanting to fight and use a gun broke conventional roles and shows
that they were not bound by

Why Should Books Be Banned In Schools
What would you do if a school let your kindergartener read a provocative book? What if a book about
becoming transgender was read for story time for first graders? Are you willing to let your child be
exposed to that at such a young age? I know that I m not, so I stand with censoring and banning books.
If books are inappropriate, children simply should not have access to them in a public or school
library. I think that if a book is banned, it is banned for a good reason. Furthermore, I think that the
process of censorship of books is perfect, for it needs to be strict enough in order to keep children and
adults safe from unsuitable books. Of course, everyone has the freedom to read whatever they want,
but they can do that in their own home ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Children would have the wrong things in their young minds instead of things like the alphabet or the
number system. To replace the sweet, developing stories, children s minds will be stimulated with
terrible politics, social issues, and other mature themes. According to a TIMES article, Banned Books:
A School Librarian s Perspective, a the librarian, Sharon Coatney, believes that all libraries should
always put the child s education first. I think that school libraries can do that by providing educational
resources and books for the children. However, Coatney feels that, Our students should not be denied
to the materials they need. She also thinks that by having inappropriate censorship are providing
discriminated readers. However, if we weren t able to ban any scandalous books, what would be the
point of having censorship? Censorship helps keep libraries in check with appropriate books, and if
you really need to read a certain books that is not available, most of these books are still able to be
bought on Amazon or on a pdf. To conclude, the idea of censorship for books is great in order to keep
the books young and old people read appropriate and

Ebola Epidemic Analysis
Background Information: Diseases have emerged and reemerged throughout history, claiming
thousands of lives. The infectious and/or contagious nature of a disease allows for its rapid spread
throughout a population, and thus, able to escalate quickly and claim a large portion of the population
before they are contained. Diseases such as Ebola or AIDS are usually fatal, and their lack of available
treatment fill people with dread and fear. The most recent outbreak of Ebola in 2014 experienced by
the South African countries, especially Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea, is the largest Ebola
outbreak in history (Frieden, T. R., Damon, I., Bell, B. P., Kenyon, T., Nichol, S. 2014).. This virus has

In this hypothetical situation, I will assume that 1 person has arrived in Oakville, carrying the ebola
virus (assuming that they are able to pass undetected by the medical immigration authorities, at the

assume that there are no individuals who are immune to this disease, thus, the entire population of
Oakville, except for the 1 infected person is at risk of being infected by the disease. Then, I will use
the Kermack McKendrick model to derive an exponential equation, which will model the spread of
this virus throughout Oakville. Using this equation, I will be able to find the time required, in days, for
the entire population to be affected by the virus. I will define the point at which the entire population
is affected by the virus, to be that point at which there are no more susceptible people remaining who
are at risk of being infected by the disease. This means that all the people are distributed within the
categories of either being infected or recovered with immunity, or dead. I will then compare my
results to those of case studies, of countries such as Sierra Leone and Liberia which were affected in
the 2014

  • 2. The Philosophy Of Plato, Soren Kierkegaard, And Friedrich... P hilosophical Travel Journal 1 W C Patten PHL2 71 February 23, 2015 Philosophical Travel Journal I am writing this journal with the goal of recounting my travels to different philosophical societies. Remarkably, each one of the three societies I was privileged enough to travel to r igidly followed a renowned philosophy. These were the philosophies of Plato, Soren Kierkegaard, and Friedrich Nietzsche. The Republic The first society I visited was that of Plato s philosophy. The residents were very kind and sought out true meanings of different vi rtues solely by dialectic. They structured their city much the same way that Plato structured the renowned Republic . Plato said that a just city would involve each man doing his own work, or specializing in a certain task. The cobbler would be a cobbler, the builder would be a builder, the farmer a farmer, and so on an d so forth. Each of these focused on his work and in such a way maximized outpu t, as is logical. The army protecting that city stood as a c ourageous wall around it, ready to defend it whenever necessary. The soldiers training was intense, focusing not only on physical exercise but also on the arts. By being brought up with training both in the arts and in physical exercise, Plato believed t hese soldiers would be both courageous and wise. Indeed, they were. The city was very confident in its guardians, knowing full well that should war be declared, it would be re solved by reason or, if all else failed, a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Tisto Alternate Ending Tisto entered the arena, one of the few standing buildings on the ruins of Karufr. The planet had recently been bombarded by the Grandmaster s forces, and the kiffar had decided it would be a good place to visit due to his own nature. As a scar in the force Tisto had to move around every so often so he wouldn t lead Inquisitors to the Knights of Allusis and Clan Odan Urr. He moved through the arena, his leather jacket pushed around by the wind. *Clack* Tisto turned around quickly, grabbing his saber off his belt. Behind him stood a tall man with a blindfold wrapped around his head. The mans robes billowed out from behind him, pushed by the wind. Tisto eyed the man suspiciously, not ever having seen him before. The miraluka Talis looked back at Tisto unsure what to make of him. He recognized the Knight Commander from when he was Knighted after New Tython was bombarded, but just like then he was put off by the Knight Commanders appearance. Unlike the normal human shape aura there was a jagged split in the kiffar s, making him seem very disconnected. Looking him was disorienting, but after a few seconds Talis began to get used to it. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I saw you when they knighted me. • 4. Genocide Of The International Criminal Court Introduction Genocide is defined as violent crimes committed against a group of people with the intention to destroy the existence of the group. Usually these crimes are committed against racial, religious, national or ethnical groups. These crimes can vary from simply murder to deliberately inflicting the group s conditions of life, other crimes such as causing serious bodily or mental harm, imposing measures to prevent births within the group and forcibly transferring children from the group to another group. All these crimes are aimed to serve one goal that is destroy the existence of a certain group, whatever the crime may be it all serves as genocide. In 2002 the International Criminal Court was established to help prevent crimes against humanity. Genocide is one of those crimes the court set forth to prevent, although genocide may seem like a crime that must be listed under crimes against humanity or war crimes, it is the intent of destroying the existence of a certain group that separates it from similar crimes. Other acts that are related to genocide are also punishable by law, such as: conspiracy to commit genocide, direct and public incitement to commit genocide, attempt to commit genocide and complicity in genocide. Some of these laws might seem obvious to some of us, but the term genocide was only found in 1944 that is after the Second World War (the holocaust). • 5. Oppression In John Steinbeck s The Grapes Of Wrath Introduction On June 6, 2014, two tornadoes tore through the small town of Pilger, Nebraska. After the storm ended, the residents of the town banded together to rebuild their town. Over the next two years, the residents of Pilger worked together to rebuild their community with the help of many other communities around them. Though their town had been destroyed, the community united in the midst of it all to rebuild their homes (Driscoll). In John Steinbeck s The Grapes of Wrath, the migrant workers faced opposition from Californian residents. Like the people in Pilger, Nebraska, the migrant workers worked together to help one another out. In The Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck focuses on the central idea that when society is against a group of people, the people band together to help one another out. To accomplish this, Steinbeck uses excellent characterization to show how each of his unique characters united with others when faced with oppression. Biography ... The London Plan, is a complex, yet vital part of the UK s capital cities roots as it contributes to the efficient day to day running of the city, whilst also aiming to aid sustainable development. The most recent update to the London Plan was released in 2015 which covered multiple topical issues ranging from strategic housing, transport, dealing with the pressures of climate change, economic development, quality of life and managing demographics. In modern day society, especially amongst geographers and planners, the concept of sustainability and sustainable development is vital when making decisions that effects both people and the environment, as it involves using today s resources in a way that ensures they are still available for future generations to come. Sustainable development is an important concept for the future of the world, and for developments in geography. The idea of sustainable development is a bridge between geography and compatible disciplines. Beyond that, it is a conduit through which geographers can contribute to a positive future for life on earth . With that in mind, it is essential that if the London Plan wishes to be successful, it must consider how they are going to integrate the aspect of sustainability into their development, especially with the increasing pressures of changing demographics, (e.g. overpopulation, green belt development and housing crisis s) and climate change heightening the risk of flooding, increased temperatures, energy issues and drought across not ... He believes that the Framework provides such broad guidelines that it would be impossible to apply the objective(s) to present day reporting problems. Although both stories follow along with the same idea, they are entirely two different stories. Having lesser detail, the original fairy tale was very short and only gave the main character a name, a back story, and a goal. Disney s interpretation was more decorated and told a much longer, kid friendly story. The Grimm Brothers created a dark and simple fairy tale that was full of unexpected twists and turns. Each sentence was very simple, and didn t add unnecessary details. • 10. Related Rates Problem Related rates problems are notorious in calculus. They involve finding the rate at which a quantity changes. It is June 2017, and I am frantically pedalling in a roundabout in the middle of Stanford s campus, commonly referred to as the circle of death . The traffic within it is indistinguishable from Times Square during peak hours. The brick buildings tower overhead, busses and bikes whiz past, and I push as hard as I can, trying to escape the narrowing asphalt. On this early day of the term, I know nothing about related rates and I can t seem to get out of this circle of confusion. Stanford had covered all of my summer term tuition, and I found myself unexpectedly shot out of the midwest and my tiny rural high school straight into an elite college curriculum. To overcome this, speech signal can be used to input the data and the result is an audio signal. Speech is the vocalized form of human communication. It ranges from 90 Hz to 7,000 Hz. Each spoken word is created out of the phonetic combination of a limited set of vowel and consonant speech sound units. The voiced speech of a typical adult male will have a fundamental frequency from 85 to 180 Hz, and that of a typical adult female from 165 to 255 Hz. Thus, the fundamental frequency of most speech falls below the bottom of the voice frequency band as defined above. Speech recognition is a process ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Generally the more traing, the higher the perfromance of the system for virtually any task. The reference pattern are sensitive to the speaking environment and transmission characteristics of the medium used to create the speech, this is because the speech spectral characteristics are affected by transmission and background noise. No speech specific knowledge is used explicitly in the system; hence the method is relatively in sensitive to choice of vocabulary words, task, syntax, and task semantics. The computational load for both pattern training and pattern classification is generally linearly proportional to the number of patterns being trained or recognized. Hence computation for a large number of sound classes could and often does become prohibitive. Because the system is insensitive to sound class, the basic techniques are applicable to a wide range of speech sounds, including phrases, whole words and sub word units. The basic set of techniques developed for one sound class (e.g., words) can generally be directly applied to different sound classes (e.g., subword units) with little or no modifications to the ... • 16. Uses And Uses Of Virtualization Virtualization is being able to give a physical device the power, through the use of software, to do more than that physical device was technically designed and able to do (Santana, 2014, p. 12). For example, a server can only run one operating system at a time. However, when a hypervisor is used in a server, the hypervisor is a layer of software that acts like the server itself so that many operating systems can be run from that one server. The hardware, in this case a server, has been virtualized. The goal is to use all of the computer s resources all of the time, and the only way to do that is to have enough things running that the resources are being used consistently and efficiently. An analogy for this could be online classes. If each teacher only had one student, the teacher s resources of time and expertise would not be utilized efficiently because that one student will not need help all day, every day. If the teacher is assigned to fifteen students, the students can still get help when needed from the teacher, and they would not even be aware that they are not alone in the class. Because it is an online class, the teacher does not need any more physical resources to teach an entire class than was needed for one student. The students are receiving the benefits of being taught by that teacher without needing to be with him or her physically. 2. • 17. Immigration, Offshoring And American Jobs Essay Young Bo Moh April 13, 2016 Immigration In 2014, President Obama claimed, For more than 200 years, our tradition of welcoming immigrants from around the world has given us a tremendous advantage over other nations. It s kept us youthful, dynamic, and entrepreneurial. It has shaped our character as a people with limitless possibilities (Office of the Press Secretary, 2014). What makes the United States the United States? Our country s success and culture comes from the power of immigrants. But this is not to brag about our historical foundation, rather talk about immigration being a significant variable in our economy. First, immigration brings creative ideas to the American economy. Immigrants bring their culture from their homelands, and it strengthens the population by enriching their ideas (Kelly, 2013). In addition, it creates more jobs. The study, Immigration, Offshoring and American Jobs by Professor Ottaviano of Bocconi University and Professor Peri of the UC Davis, notes that low skilled immigrants usually fill gaps in American labor markets and generally enhance domestic business prospects rather than destroy jobs (Cowen, 2010). In addition, immigrants including the unauthorized people create jobs through their purchasing power and entrepreneurship. (American Immigration Council, 2015). According to the Economic Report of the President, immigration added roughly 0.2 percent to GDP: $31.4 billion (American Immigration Council, 2015). To sum it up, a study by the ... Yet instead of feeling like I ve been stuck on the same career path for 16 years, I feel like each day, each article, is a new venture. Ultimately, I hope to be the chief of a news bureau in a large European capital such as Dublin or Belfast. Parents With Bereavement Helping Parents with Bereavement in order to Help Children The single biggest protective factor facilitating early parental loss and poor physical and mental health outcomes is the presence of a supportive, nurturing parent who models healthy grief and supports the child s emotional expression (Lueken, Kraft, Appelhans, Enders, 2009; Lueken Lemery, 2004; Worden, 1996). Werner Lin Biank (2012), set out to teach parents how to appropriately model grief, to engage with children in their expressions of sadness, and to provide the family with resources and coping skills. As previously stated, children that experience parental loss are at a high risk of a variety of succeeding health and mental health problems (Bruskus, 2008; Dyregrov Yule ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is important to recognize the fact that children with developmental disoders experience grief even though their experessions of grief may be very different from their nondisabled peers or siblings. It is also important to recognize aggressive and self harming behaviors. An increase in frustration and compulsiveness, difficulties in relationships, somatic complaints, and withdrawal should be seen as possible expressions of grief instead of as part of the child s disability (Bonell Pascual et al., 1999; Kauffman, 2005; Lavin, 1989). Due to the fac that developmentally disabled children have trouble understanding abstract concepts, they may need information about death and dying to be communciatied through various mediums and to include multi sensory pieces to ensure comprehension. Using phrases such as, He is with God , should be avoided in order to lessen the chances of confusing the child. Developmentally disabled children are concrete thinkers and death should be explained as simply and clearly as possible. Understand that responses to grief may manifest themselves in a range of emotions, cognitions, behaviors, and physical reactions. Using materials that the child can see, such as a feelings chart to help the him or her identify and describe their responses may be beneficial. Talk to the child abou the purpose of rituals like wakes, memorials, and funerals, being very detailed about what the child is to expect. Use of pictures, photographs, or story books is encouraged in order to familiarize the child with new words and activities related to death. • 20. Types Of Stress And Loss Everyone at any given age is faced with different types of stress and loss. As human beings we continuously evolve onto the next phase of our lives, which bring on new challenges and stress. Ziegler (2014) indicated that it s a reminder that adult development encompasses both growth and decline (Ziegler, 2014). Unfortunately, not everyone is equipped to deal with stress, consequently resorting to maladaptive coping skills, such as: self indulging in over eating, smoking, and drinking alcohol. Likewise, when dealing with loss, there are maladaptive coping skills, which are similar as the ones described for stress, but also some may lash out or avoidance. On the other hand, others adaptively and resiliently bounce back (Zeigler, 2014). Pollack (1988) stated, no matter how difficult the situation, I will eventually find a way to cope with it (Pollack, 1988, p. 17). Pollack, is the example of a person who through optimism, a good support network, resilience, and stress related growth, she was able to get through stressful time by coping with the loss successfully (Ziegler, 2014). In 1988, Pollack shares her own experience of losing her husband to colon cancer and how she managed to get herself and family through it. Hitchcock s use of shadow manipulation is comparable to the importance of shadows in many famous German Expressionist films, Nosferatu (1922) and The Cabinet of Dr Caligari (1920). Hitchcock himself stated that he had acquired a strong German influence by working at the UFA studios in Berlin . Therefore, it can be argued that Hollywood cinema does not have a definitive history. The examples Bordwell and Thompson use in Film History: An Introduction supports the perspective within one form of history, Hollywood cinema. However, it is evident that some films which fit perfectly within the Hollywood cinema definition, include traits of German Expressionism. The film history is blurred and not definitive or exclusive to one ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Why Do Jewish Women Join Partisan Groups Jewish women fighting within the partisan groups faced an uphill battle in their attempt to gain respect and find their place within the group. Being both Jewish and women, just gaining access into the group was difficult but then once they were in, they faced being bound by traditional feminine role and the threat of sexual abuse. Many partisan women though, did not let racism, and sexism define them and proved themselves valuable through their work ethics, skills, and strength. Through several stories we have learned about, we can see the heroism that these women showed and how they broke away from the traditional roles that women were expected to play, shattering the stereotypes that were put on them. These women survived not only being a partisan but also the evil twins of anti Semitic and sexual violence (JPEF1). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many Jewish women did not join the partisans out of fear, and felt that their role was to remain loyal to their family, even if that meant death, and many men agreed with this. We see this with Meyer Orbuch who refused to take his sister into his partisan group saying, no girls can go with us. Only boys can go (JPEF2). So the women that did join partisans were already breaking free of the traditional roles that many people felt they should be playing as women. Women that joined the partisans wanted to live, and to avenge the humiliation that had been thrown upon them and their families. This concept of women wanting to fight and use a gun broke conventional roles and shows that they were not bound by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Why Should Books Be Banned In Schools What would you do if a school let your kindergartener read a provocative book? What if a book about becoming transgender was read for story time for first graders? Are you willing to let your child be exposed to that at such a young age? I know that I m not, so I stand with censoring and banning books. If books are inappropriate, children simply should not have access to them in a public or school library. I think that if a book is banned, it is banned for a good reason. Furthermore, I think that the process of censorship of books is perfect, for it needs to be strict enough in order to keep children and adults safe from unsuitable books. Of course, everyone has the freedom to read whatever they want, but they can do that in their own home ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Children would have the wrong things in their young minds instead of things like the alphabet or the number system. To replace the sweet, developing stories, children s minds will be stimulated with terrible politics, social issues, and other mature themes. According to a TIMES article, Banned Books: A School Librarian s Perspective, a the librarian, Sharon Coatney, believes that all libraries should always put the child s education first. I think that school libraries can do that by providing educational resources and books for the children. However, Coatney feels that, Our students should not be denied to the materials they need. She also thinks that by having inappropriate censorship are providing discriminated readers. However, if we weren t able to ban any scandalous books, what would be the point of having censorship? Censorship helps keep libraries in check with appropriate books, and if you really need to read a certain books that is not available, most of these books are still able to be bought on Amazon or on a pdf. To conclude, the idea of censorship for books is great in order to keep the books young and old people read appropriate and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Ebola Epidemic Analysis Background Information: Diseases have emerged and reemerged throughout history, claiming thousands of lives. The infectious and/or contagious nature of a disease allows for its rapid spread throughout a population, and thus, able to escalate quickly and claim a large portion of the population before they are contained. Diseases such as Ebola or AIDS are usually fatal, and their lack of available treatment fill people with dread and fear. The most recent outbreak of Ebola in 2014 experienced by the South African countries, especially Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea, is the largest Ebola outbreak in history (Frieden, T. R., Damon, I., Bell, B. P., Kenyon, T., Nichol, S. 2014).. This virus has claimed the lives of 70 % of the people that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this hypothetical situation, I will assume that 1 person has arrived in Oakville, carrying the ebola virus (assuming that they are able to pass undetected by the medical immigration authorities, at the port of land of the foreign country). As there has never been an ebola epidemic in Oakville, I will assume that there are no individuals who are immune to this disease, thus, the entire population of Oakville, except for the 1 infected person is at risk of being infected by the disease. Then, I will use the Kermack McKendrick model to derive an exponential equation, which will model the spread of this virus throughout Oakville. Using this equation, I will be able to find the time required, in days, for the entire population to be affected by the virus. I will define the point at which the entire population is affected by the virus, to be that point at which there are no more susceptible people remaining who are at risk of being infected by the disease. This means that all the people are distributed within the categories of either being infected or recovered with immunity, or dead. I will then compare my results to those of case studies, of countries such as Sierra Leone and Liberia which were affected in the 2014 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
