Compare And Contrast Qin Dynasty And Han Dynasty
China, up until the Qin Dynasty, consisted of independent states controlled by kings fighting each
other for land and power. This time period was called The Era of Warring States, and it lasted two
hundred years. After this time, the Qin Dynasty rose to power. The Qin conquered all other
independent states, and established a centralized government, unifying Chinafor the first time. The
Han Dynastysucceed the Qin and continued to rule with a centralized government and while
initiating a westward expansion that would encourage trade and cultural diffusion. The Qin and
Han Dynasties were similar in that they both believed in a strong centralized government, which
strengthened and unified their empires, but they differed in that the Qin followed... Show more

The Qin preferred to keep foreigners out and focus on improving their empire internally while the
Han wanted to build a relationships with foreigners. The Qin Dynasty had a deep distrust of
outsiders and fear of invasion by the Xiongu, China s nomadic neighbors to the North. Qin Shi
Huang wanted to prevent the Xiongu from invading, so he decided to build a massive wall along
the Qin s northern territories. This wall is known as The Great Wall of China. Qin Shi Huang
preferred to focus on connecting his empire instead of building relationships with outsiders. In his
rule, he commissioned many beneficial building projects such as vast road systems, and complex
irrigation projects. The feud the Qin had against the Xiongu continued into the Han dynasty. Early
Han leaders preferred to gift the Xiongu with extravagant gifts to persuade them from taking Han
land. However, in 140BC, Emperor Wu became emperor of China. He would completely
revolutionize China s foreign relations and trade economy. Wu set up colonies to force the Xiongu
out of their land and started alliances with local leaders. Eventually, the Han allied themselves with
the Southern Federation of the Xiongu, which would prove useful in fighting against the Xiongu.
One alliance with the Dong people in Southern China lasted though the Han, Tang, and Song
Dynasties. These alliances, which included gift giving, turned into

Should Creationism Be Taught In Public Schools Essay
If you walk into a public school science classroom and ask the students what they were taught
pertaining to the creation of the universe, most likely the majority of them will talk about the Big
Bang theory or the theory of evolution. This has always been a topic of interest that has caused
many debates on whether public schools should teach creationismin the classrooms. Creationism is
the belief that the universe was created by specific acts of divine creation and is more known as
Genesis to the Abrahamic religions. In my opinion creationism is a subject that should be
taught alongside of science because it can develop critical thinking skills for the students, it will
satisfy the demand of the people, and will fulfill our freedom of speech. Many educators will
disagree that creationism should be taught in public schools because they say it is disapproved
by science and will be a waste of time since it is religious. Creationism is no more religious than
the theory of the Big Bang, if you ask me it takes greater faith to believe that something came out of
nothing. The Big Bang theory is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

humans just like us and they also have their own beliefs therefore they can be bias, since there not

with the evidence. After spending some time doing research on scientific theories about creation
and creationism, I can say that all the theories of creation is no more truthful than creationism, and
instead of just teaching scientific theories in the school system, we should push for creationism to
be taught as well for the purpose of supplying demand, freedom of speech, and developing critical

Why The Homeless Rates Are Going Up And The Loss Of...
Many (e.g,Gultai, 1990: McChesney, 1990) argue that changes in federal social policies have
played a significant role in the rise in homelessness and particularly in the increase in the number
of homeless families (Family Relations. 1995,44.13 18.) Homelessness is defined as a
condition where people cannot live or afford regular, safe and secure homes, warm meals or to
be fully clothed. It s also defined differently in many countries or regions. It also includes that
some homeless people shelter is a cardboard box, shelters that may or may not have room, the
sides of the interstate as well as living in a junk yard car. My purpose is to study the reasons why
the homeless rates are going up and the loss of assistance for homeless person or families. Its
many reasons on why we see someone loved ones living on the streets or living in different
shelters day by day. Some that are homeless due to their actions some are homeless because of
something they could not control. Living on the streets or shelters are unsafe and very
unsanitary, when a homeless person lives outside, they are living under bridges, old worn down
houses, even junk yard cars to find some warmth for the night. Then the next day they are
looking for another area to sleep. Then they hunt for spare change and food. One of the top reasons
for why someone is homeless is because of the recession we are living in today. The world we are
living in today is slowly going back to decades ago, with bringing back hate

Carl Rogers Humanistic Psychodynamic Approach
EXISTENTIAL HUMANISTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY
In the 1960 s a new momentum in counselling known as the third force spawned. This force
became known as the existential humanist approach developed by Carl Rogers and Abraham
Maslow. Like most psychologists of his era; Carl Rogers trained psychodynamically (Prochaska
Norcross 2010). However, he didn t stay psychodynamic for long. Rogers disagreed with many of
Freud s presumptions about therapy and more fundamentally, about people. Along with Abraham
Maslow, Rogers pioneered the humanistic movement in psychology. The humanistic approach
assumes that people arrive with an inborn tendency to grow, otherwise known as self actualisation
and presumes that if a person s environment fosters it, self actualisation ... Show more content on

expert of their circumstances; they allow clients to express their cultural and faith based beliefs in

actualisation could disaffect clients who may feel oppressed or who are from a society believing in
the common good . Additionally, clients who are accustomed to an indirect style of conversation
may feel awkward and troublesome; however, when thinking about adversity, death and purpose,

Programming Languages Over The Years Have Improved And
Programming languages over the years have improved and even changed drastically in their
design and capabilities. New languages are created to perform specific tasks that others cannot
accomplish each year. By doing so, the creation of these new languages fill specific niches.
However, the problem with computer languages is that if you want to construct an easier
approach to a task or problem in another language, odds are you must give something else up to
accomplish that goal. Which is why there is such a large amount of different and unique
programming languages. Each of them has a specific purpose of implementation, COBOL, for
example, is the primary language of business. FORTRAN is the primary language of science,

Like many modern programming languages, Lua was inspired and influenced by other previous
languages. Among such influences are Scheme and Python (101 Ireusalimschy). However, Lua
was not simply created as one new language, but rather, as as the fusion of two descriptive
languages, designed for the configuration of two specific applications: one for scientific data
entry, the other for visualizing lithology profiles obtained from geological probes (SPE paper).
SOL, a data description language, was the first half of this fusion. What Lua inherited from SOL
was its data description support, but conversely integrated that support into procedural semantics
(2 Ireusalimschy). Furthermore, SOL s ability to name and nest declarations was passed onto
Lua. Syntax between SOL and Lua have minor differences but rather drastic differences in
semantics (2 Ireusalimschy). And the other half of this fusion? None other than DEL, a simple
language designed to describe and declare data entries in a simple way. To make the boring
process of data entry easier, DEL turned each entity into a data structure or record that additionally
included its name in a graphical metafile. DEL s original demand for an interactive data entry
language was met, but quickly the team at TeCGraf was met with more demands. Items on the
wish list for DEL included Boolean variables for active/inactive input, loops, and conditional
controls. As DEL became heavier and heavier, the team decided they truly needed

by all the day to day stress. In Brave New World published in 1932, Aldous Huxley brings the
reader into the future of London to see just what technology can do to a society. As the novel
opens, the reader learns about how the futuristic London is a Utopia, what life is like, and all about
the great technological advancements. After Bernard is introduced to the reader, he goes to the

Another way dystopia is reveled in the novel is through the actions of John. When he is brought
back to London, he does not understand how and why the people live that way. The author
makes it seem as if the people have no feel for what freedom is, it is almost as if they are slaves,
trained and conditioned to do what they are supposed to do. In an attempt to get the people to
believe and rebel against the civilized world, John throws the soma out the window. Soma is a
pill that is given to the workers to take them to a soma holiday, a place where one is always
happy and can not be bothered by the outside world. After throwing the soma out the window,
John and Bernard are taken to Mustapha Mond s office, a controller of London. John and the
Mustapha Mond get into a discussion about what makes London so great. On page 263
Mustapha Mond says, [the people are] ignorant of passion and old age. He is wondering what
more anyone could one want besides never getting old or fat and never having to worry about
all the heartaches of passion. The final way the characters show dystopia is through their
speech. Mustapha Mond says, [the people are] plagued with no mothers or fathers . . . or lovers . . .
they re so conditioned that they practically can not help behaving as they ought to behave (264).

Existentialism, By Albert Camus, Raymond Carvers, Short...
After all, the Choice is Yours
Existentialism is a humanism, sure, if one were so inclined, since after all it is ones choice to
choose if they are a true existentialist. Any and all human philosophies can be used as a guide to
ones path in life in their own morality, however, until it becomes inconvenient then it is tolerable to
deviate off ones path to make it work for themselves. The basic foundation of existentialism is,
existence precedes essence and there can be no human nature if this is ones belief, as Descartes
puts it, in a sense; I think therefore I am . These traits and actions are portrayed throughout the
stories of Albert Camus, The Stanger, Raymond Carvers, Short Cuts and Woody Allen s movie,
Crimes and Misdemeanors. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Meursault mirrors Sartre s description of existentialism in his absurd view of the world and life
in general, by demonstrating that nothing really matters, since everyone must live and die, what
we do in between is irrelevant. The paramount description relating to Sartre s existentialism and
Camus portrayal of such justification, is when Marie asked if she could marry Meursault and
his reply was, I said it didn t make any difference to me and that we could if she wanted to .
Therefore, he dons the choice onto Marie, however the true insignificance to Marie s proposal is
what is being upheld in his decision. Sartre states You are free, therefore choose that is to say,
invent. No rule of general morality can show you what you ought to do: no signs are vouchsafed
in this world . In other words, Meursault s negligible response of insignificance and
purposelessness is his choice and his expression of not caring regardless, but if she wanted to get
married it was tolerable with him, may sound as a justification, and however becomes Meursault s
right choice. In abstract; David Drake states, in his article, Sartre: Intellectual of the Twentieth
Century that, I feel no solidarity with anything, not even myself: I do not need anybody or
anything (32). Meursault was content with his life, whether the rest of the world approved was a
non factor for him. After all, the choice was his.

The Effective Use of Dramatic Devices in Miller s The...
The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a famous play which was written in the early 1950 s. The
Crucible is a play based upon the events in 1692, which led to the Salem Witch Trials , a series
of hearings before local magistrates to prosecute over 150 people accused of witchcraft. This
was due to the hysteria caused by a group of girls accusing innocent people of witch craft. The
play was set in Salem, Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 1693. Salem was a very
isolated and puritanical community, so their biggest fear was the devil and witchcraft. A person
being accused of witchcraft was the worst thing possible in this society. The definition of crucible

One of the play writers that was blamed was Arthur Miller himself, and he had to suffer the
consequence of prison for one year as there were no free trials. After Miller s time in prison, he
wrote the Crucible, an allegorical play in which Miller linked the situation of America going
hunting Communists to the Witch Hunts in Salem. Throughout the play Miller creates tension
between the characters, however this tension is mainly shown in Act Two. Although the main
theme of the Crucible is witch craft, this act concentrates mainly on the relationship of John and
Elizabeth Proctor. Miller uses a variety of dramatic devices such as, stage directions, long
pauses and silences, entrances of other characters (interruptions), use of contrast, length of
sentences and punctuation to express mood and feeling, use of figurative language and
repetition and how other characters react to a particular problem. Prior to this act the girls have
named the witches and have accused innocent people, for example I saw Goody Hawkins with
the devil... This scene ends with everybody screaming and being hysterical and as soon as act
two starts, there is silence. This shows a powerful use of contrast between the acts through the
stage directions. This also affects the audience because as the curtain is falling they are left at the
edge of their seats and as soon as it drops they are left hanging as they want to know what has
happened to the girls. Arthur Miller uses this device

The history of Mexico is much different than the history of its northern neighbor, the United
States (U. S.). At one time Mexican territory extended north into the Colorado area and west to
California before ceding the property to the U. S. after the Mexican American War of 1846 1848.
Mexico and most of South America had been settled by Spain upon encountering the New World
in 1492. So South American Spanish colonies spoke Spanish, had a ruling class that was not native

The Black And Black British Diaspora

his notion of The Black Atlantic as useful for re imagining black identities?
Introduction
This essay will analyse the concept of The Black Atlantic by sociologist Paul Gilroy. Written almost
20 years ago, it is an important concept which has been celebrated as instrumental in the re
imagining of black culture. Its framework will be examined by referencing its history and
exploring some of its influences from other theorists such as Stuart Hall. Following this contextual

Challenging the taboo between the integration of white and black, it theorised a new modernity of
hybridity in culture over the transatlantic space, shaping a new transnational concept. Gilroys
theory aimed to get rid of the sociological imagination of race and instead appreciate the cultural
heritage and influence of people. This spawned new arguments, theories and research, which helped
to combine areas in a new age of interdisciplinary subjects; influencing the study of sociology,
geography, politics, anthropology, art and many other areas. Gilroy specifically shows a very deep
connection to music and creativity, demonstrating how these traits make a profound transformation
in society. For example, the evolution of music represents how the deep rooted pain of black
culture has mixed with the romanticised white culture in a hybrid form to create something new.
This expressed interest focused on a select few avant garde individuals, who connected to this
African transatlantic blackness and these intellectuals inspired his main concepts such as W.E.B.

With a very favorable remaining schedule the Vikings find themselves in a nice situation as we
head toward the second half of the season. 8. St. Louis Rams: 4 3 Yes, you read that correctly,
the St. Louis Rams are in my Power Ten. They have an elite defense, ranking in the top six of
each statistical category for team defense. They have the best defensive line with Chris Long,
Aaron Donald, and Robert Quinn. Their secondary is one of the best in the game, routinely
shutting down opposing teams passing games. The team has always had a great defense during
the Jeff Fisher Era, but for the first time the team finally has a legitimate playmaker on offense,
and that guy is Todd Gurley. Gurley leads the NFL in rushing yards per carry with 6.7. Despite
only playing in five games, Gurley is fifth in the entire league in rushing yards. The Rams are a
serious threat to qualify for a wild car spot and are clearly the second best team in the NFC West.

Traditional Learning Organizations
Introduction Peter Senge is a Senior Lecturer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is
the author of the widely acclaimed book The Fifth Discipline: The Art and Practice of the
Learning Organization (1990). He can be said to be responsible for the popularity of the concept of
a learning organization today. Peter Senge argues that not only we humans learn, but organizations
also. However, learning itself may not be enough for the organization to survive in this ever
challenging era. In his book, The Fifth Discipline, Senge introduced five disciplines , namely
systems thinking, personal mastery, mental models, building shared vision, and team learning, that
characterizes an organization as a learning organization.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A learning organization allows all employees to have input in how the organization works. A
traditional organization tends to be more bureaucratic and formal. This culture places importance
on efficiency and stability. Employees have no or very little say in the organization and only do as
they are told. Besides that, there is a clear difference in how both organizations are led. In a learning
organization, the leadership is somehow spread out across the organization. Formal leaders do not
dictate but listen to the employees and guide the organization in the desired direction through
shared visions and goals. In a traditional organization, every single process is done formally under
the instructions and dictation of the topmost management. Employees are assumed to be
incompetent thus do not make any decisions at all; the leaders are in charge of that. In terms of
assessment of overall performance, a learning organization assesses its performance through
learning histories, their creativity and innovativeness, the extent of their long term goal
achievement and share accountability for the performance. A traditional organization only care
about numbers. Performance is assessed through how much profit is made, was the target achieved,
and is there too many employees. These are short term effects which may make the organization
efficient but does not necessarily help it grow and improve. The organization is rigid and feels stiff

Importance Of A Piece Of Writing
When you read an article, a book, a newspaper, or even a letter, often times you do not think of
all the complexities that the piece of writing incorporates. Every word, every sentence, every idea
expressed is carefully thought out before it is presented in writing. This is because the writer must
keep in mind their audience whilst they write, some might even go as far as to say that the writer
has obligations to the reader. On the other hand, if you stop to contemplate it, you realize that
writingis equally important to the writer as it is to the comprehensibility of the reader. Both types
of people play a crucial role in making a piece of writing what it is. I stand in agreement with
authors Mark Twain and Ursula K. Le Guin, along with an anonymous English professor at Ohio
University, who all make claims that correspond to one greater message that the teamwork
between writers and readers is what promotes the success of a piece of writing. Mark Twain
heavily emphasizes the importance of proofreading writing for clarity. Referring to the revision
of a written piece, Twain says, The time to begin writing an article is when you have finished it
to your satisfaction. By that time you begin to clearly and logically perceive what it is you really
want to say. Twain is saying that once you have written your piece, you have only finished putting
your thoughts into words on the paper, but it isn t a well crafted piece of writing just yet; the first
draft isn t the final. You

Sarojini Naidu Essay
Poetry is a pleasure giving medium. This medium is handled by different poets in the world. Most
of the poets in India present their poetry in their mother tongue only. Those who present poetry in
languages other their own have not succeeded so well as Sarojini Naidu.
There are not many in India who have written poetry in English. Among them, Sarojini Naidu
stands first. Her poems are praised not only in India, but all over the world.
Though she has written poems on religion, country, women s freedom, etc., her poems on nature
occupy the first place in her poetry. Even in sorrow, her nature poems glow with a touch of her
suffering.
Sarojini Naidu was a distinguished poet, renowned freedom fighter and one of the great orators of
her time. She was famously known as Bharatiya Kokila (The Nightingale of India). Sarojini Naidu
was the first Indian woman to become the President of the Indian National Congress and the first
woman to become the governor of a state in India.

The Effects Of Offshore Drilling On The Environment
The next chapter, we came across in the BIO 224 class was Oil. Here, we learned about oil in
detail. We learned about its sources, extractions, producers, consumers and its impacts on the
environment. We went through a couple of videos that helped us understand the topic more. We
also had a class discussion on the topic which made us more familiar with the topic.
Oil is also known as crude oil, which is a liquid composed of hundreds of hydrocarbon compounds
that can be separated into different products based on their boiling points. Depending upon the
boiling point crude oil can produce various products. Under low boiling point crude oil produces
gases and under high boiling point it produces lubricants and asphalt. These crude oil can be ...

It is therefore, very important to minimize and make proper use of oil. The demand for the oil is
increasing with increasing human population. If the demand for oil increases this way then we
are no far from having oil scarcity. The scarcity of oil will harm the lifestyle. I remember facing
oil scarcity back in my home country. My country faced a major economic blocked a year ago
and being a landlocked country we had no excess to oil supply until our neighboring country
allowed the oil tankers to pass through the borders. This blockade brought up the worst
nightmare to all our natives. We had thousands of motors lined up in front of the gas station. Not
only the petrol even the LPG gas were out of stock. People then had to go through the worst
days. There were no petrol for the motors to ride and no LPG gas for people to cook and eat. We
had no any alternative to fuel and LPG gas except for the electricity. But having all of the people
use the electricity at once was very hard for the electric corporation to control and in no time we
had power cut off more than 12 hours a day. Our people had to go through this for about 3 or
more months and life then was very tough. Recalling all these days gives me goosebumps all over
my body. So it is very important that we know and understand the importance of oil and that we

Chilean Water Sanitation
Water supply and sanitation in Chile has high levels of access and good service quality.
Compared to most other countries. Chile s water and sanitation sector distinguishes itself by the
fact that almost all urban water companies are privately owned or operated. The sector also
prides itself of having a modern and effective regulatory framework, including an innovative
subsidy to water demand by the poor. One weakness of the sector is the relatively high water
losses. Chilean urban areas with improved water coverage stood at 96% and coverage of

Violence In The Virgin Suicides In The Virgin Suicides
From this analysis and definition of witchcraft and its relation to the player, gossip, one can see
how violence may erupt from such cases of witch accusations. Gossip, as an active player in witch
hunts and trials can [...] outrun the intentions of [its] creators, producing more violence than is
anticipated (Stewart and Strathern 193). Such unanticipated growth within gossip is the result of,
as Hurston writes in Their eyes were watchingGod, words walking without masters (2). One can
relate words walking without masters as violence walking without masters. In the way that words,
gossip, and rumor can snowball, to a certain degree, violence can as well. After misfortunes, most
often deaths, within a community, people attribute misfortune to witches and kill them in order to
set matters right (Stewart and Strathern 193). Therefore, we see that violence is retribution in witch
hunts and is given agency through gossip. In The Virgin Suicides, the community, in effect, kills
the Lisbon sisters through violent gossip in retribution for Cecilia s death and the unrest it caused
the community. The Lisbon sister s state is reflected through a tree in their front yard that, for a
time [...] stood blighted, trying to raise its stunted arms, a creature clubbed mute (Eugenides 173).
The vicious words of the community clubbed the sisters, robbing them of their personality.
Eventually, the sisters become so ostracized and hated for their inability to be anything but sexual

Advantages Of Islamic Banking
1.0Overview
Islamic banking refers to a system of banking that complies with Islamic law, also known as
Shariah law. The underlying principles that govern Islamic banking are mutual risk and profit
sharing between the provider of capital (investor) and the user of funds (entrepreneur). In other
words, it ensures an equal contribution for all parties involved, whether in profitability or in case of
any loss occurred. Activities that involve interest (riba), gambling (maisir) and speculative trading

In this system, conventional banks make profit through the different rates of interest by borrowing
and lending of money. However, one of the drawbacks of conventional banking is that it is

The performance of all the banks in the country may not necessarily be on the positive side

and presents an opportunity to learn something new. However, the approach to managing all five

The Between Austria Hungary And The German Empire
In addition to the treaty of London, numerous other treaties and alliances help explain the
outbreak of WWI. The Dual Alliance between Austria Hungary and the German Empire in 1879
ensured a promise of mutual defense if either side was attacked by Russia, and neutrality if
attacked by any other nation. Italy joined the Dual Alliance in 1882 forming the Triple Alliance or
central powers. Additionally, France formed an alliance with Russia in 1894 and an entente
cordiale, or friendship with Britain in 1904. Subsequently, Britain formed an entente with Russia
in 1907, effectively forming the Triple Entente. This relationship further exacerbated German
fears of encirclement and left if facing a war on two fronts if it attacked or was attacked by one of
the members of the Entente. The nations involved perceived these alliances as a form of protection
and a deterrent to war. However, as predicted by the spiral mode, it only further increased concerns
and decreased trust amongst the belligerents. Additionally, the alliances united the nations together
so that, if one country went to war, the others were obligated to honor the alliance and join their
partners in war (Tuchman). Consequently, the Austro Hungarian declaration of war and attack on
Serbia caused Russia to enter the war in support of its Slavic ally. This drove France to honor its
alliance with Russia and join in war against the Triple Alliance (which Italy subsequently abandoned

extent. Hence, it is more reliable when compared to a centralized database system.
2. Local control The data is dispersed in a way that every part of it is local to some sites (servers).
The site in which the part of data is stored is the owner of the data.
3. Modular growth (resilient) Growth is easier. We do not need to interrupt any of the active sites
to introduce or add a new site. Hence, the expansion of the entire system is easier. Removal of site
as well does not cause much problems.
4. Lower communication costs (More Economical) Data are spread in a way that they are available
near to the location where they are needed more. This decreases the communication cost much more
than a centralized system.
5. Faster response Most of the data are local and in close to where they are needed. Consequently,
the requests can be answered quickly when compared to a centralized

John Lennon Essay
A Hero of Social Justice
Isaac
Abstract In our world today, and throughout the times before us, there have been people who
have chosen to step forward and defend the rights of others. These people are heroes of Social
Justice. Men like John Lennon, conspire to change our world and the lives of those who live in
it by spreading a message of peace and fighting for our rights. As a young boy Lennon was
fascinated with music and had little interest in school or being the perfect child. He quickly
discovered his artistic talents and by the age of 16, had made his own band. From there, his musical
talent expanded and the band The Beatles erupted as a popular rock band. Lennon used his music to
spread a message of peace and to also relay his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While Lennon was still under the influence of... he recorded a politically didactic single, Power to
the People, which he recalled rather embarrassing, (Connor, 1993). The song is incredibly powerful
and focuses on Power to the people, as states the title, and is only one of many songs that stress
human rights. Another popular song that endorses John Lennon s views and his hopes of a greater
day is Imagine . Rusban describes, In the first verse of Imagine he endorses the communist view
that religion is the opiate of the masses and presumably endorses the view that it should be
forcibly eradicated (Rusban, 1998). This song was the opening track on his album Imagine,
released in 1971, and was ranked the 3rd greatest song of all time by Rolling Stone. Imagine
conveyed Lennon s wish for world peace and harmony in simple terms, both musically and
lyrically. In September of 1969 John made the decision to leave the Beatles and pursue a solo
career with his wife new wife Yoko Ono. Connor, Tim quotes, Quit he did, resisting calls for a
Beatles reunion from fans and promoters; he always insisted that he had no regrets about the
breakup of the band and no desire to look back, and he believed that his solo work was as good
as, if not better than, anything the Beatles had done (Connor, 1993). The legacy of the Beatles still
lives on through

With Reference to Bp Plc’s (British Petroleum’s)...
Globalisation is supposed to make national cultures and institutions more homogenous. With
reference to BP plc s (British Petroleum s) strategies analyse the possibility that it is old fashioned
to consider the influence of the firm s home country s institutions and culture.
Introduction
In this assignment I will attempt to explore the concept that despite the spread and influence of the
globalization of business and industries on our world s economies and cultures, a large
multinational firm is still influenced in a fundamental way by its home country s institutions and
culture. I will illustrate this discussion with an analysis of the strategies employed by the
multinational energy company BP plc (formally British Petroleum). ... Show more content on

We can observe that British cultural dimensions reflect low power distance tolerance, high
individuality, high masculinity, low tolerance to uncertainty and a short termorientation.
BP plc. (British Petroleum)
When considering which international firm to use as a case study I was curious to apply this
discussion to an industry and firm which is a product of the greatest possible degree of
globalisation. In a world society with a hydrocarbon economy I find it hard to conceive of an
industry more global than that of energy production and thus a multinational oil company.
BP plc, unsurprisingly, is a British company. It was founded in 1908 and owes its early prosperity
to exploitation of Iranian (formally Persian) oilfields, where it continued to operate until the
revolution in Iran in 1979. Although having lost access to the Iranian oilfields, BP plc had
expanded operations to the North Sea and Alaska during the 1960s and 1970s. During the 1980s
the British government sold off its holdings in the company under the privatization drive. At the
end of the decade the company underwent severe corporate restructuring and downsizing. In the
1990s BP plc undertook several corporate acquisitions which resulted in BP becoming the second
largest oil company at that time. Moving forward to the present day, according to the Forbes
Global 2000

Katsu Kokichi’S Autobiography, “Musui’S Story,”
Documents
Katsu Kokichi s autobiography, Musui s Story, documents the life of a samurai in Japan s late
Tokugawa period who adopted the name Musui in his retirement. Katsu is something of a black
sheep within his family, being largely uneducated and deemed unfit for the bureaucratic office s
samurai of his standing were expected to hold. As such, he typifies in many ways the lower ronin,
or masterless samurai, many of whom famously led roaming, directionless lives and wreaked havoc
among the urban poor and merchant classes. The novel addresses the decaying power of samurai
throughout the Tokugawa period and depicts their struggle to find purpose. Throughout the story,
Katsu is impacted by three interconnected systems of power that impact his life... Show more

However, the challenges of this economic power come through forms of temptations that
plagued Japanese men at the time. These include drinking, smoking, gambling, and prostitution.
For instance, during his youth, Katsu was [tricked] into going with [Karoku] to the pleasure
quarters in the Yoshiwara. [He] enjoyed himself immensely and after that went every night.
[He] used up all his money (Musui 44). In this section, Katsu exhibits a lack of self control over
his money. His behavior is representative of many low level samurai throughout Tokugawa Japan.
These irresponsible economic decisions combine with pre existing financial disparity to place
samurai largely in debt. Similarly, these districts were often seen as an escape for samurai and
members of the lower class. Just before Katsu has fled home for the second time, he says To take
my mind off my woes, I went to the Yoshiwara (Musui 60). Many samurai were disheartened by
the fact they were indebted to merchants and had no true purpose in life. As an escape, they fled to
districts like the Yoshiwara. Ultimately, economic power is created by a flourishing economy and is
challenged by the temptations of man.
Domestic power comes from family lineage and is used to determine social status/class. The
Japanese class system prohibits individuals from moving between classes to maintain the power of
the Daimyo and Shogun. Moreover, domestic power resides in the level of respect granted to

The Qin Dynasty had a deep distrust of outsiders and fear of invasion by the Xiongu, China s nomadic neighbors to the North. Qin Shi Huang wanted to prevent the Xiongu from invading, so he decided to build a massive wall along the Qin s northern territories. This wall is known as The Great Wall of China. Qin Shi Huang preferred to focus on connecting his empire instead of building relationships with outsiders. In his rule, he commissioned many beneficial building projects such as vast road systems, and complex irrigation projects. The feud the Qin had against the Xiongu continued into the Han dynasty. Early Han leaders preferred to gift the Xiongu with extravagant gifts to persuade them from taking Han land. However, in 140BC, Emperor Wu became emperor of China. He would completely revolutionize China s foreign relations and trade economy. Wu set up colonies to force the Xiongu out of their land and started alliances with local leaders. Eventually, the Han allied themselves with the Southern Federation of the Xiongu, which would prove useful in fighting against the Xiongu. • 4. Should Creationism Be Taught In Public Schools Essay If you walk into a public school science classroom and ask the students what they were taught pertaining to the creation of the universe, most likely the majority of them will talk about the Big Bang theory or the theory of evolution. This has always been a topic of interest that has caused many debates on whether public schools should teach creationismin the classrooms. Creationism is the belief that the universe was created by specific acts of divine creation and is more known as Genesis to the Abrahamic religions. In my opinion creationism is a subject that should be taught alongside of science because it can develop critical thinking skills for the students, it will satisfy the demand of the people, and will fulfill our freedom of speech. Many educators will disagree that creationism should be taught in public schools because they say it is disapproved by science and will be a waste of time since it is religious. Creationism is no more religious than the theory of the Big Bang, if you ask me it takes greater faith to believe that something came out of nothing. The Big Bang theory is... Many (e.g,Gultai, 1990: McChesney, 1990) argue that changes in federal social policies have played a significant role in the rise in homelessness and particularly in the increase in the number of homeless families (Family Relations. 1995,44.13 18.) Homelessness is defined as a condition where people cannot live or afford regular, safe and secure homes, warm meals or to be fully clothed. Then the next day they are looking for another area to sleep. Then they hunt for spare change and food. After all, the Choice is Yours Existentialism is a humanism, sure, if one were so inclined, since after all it is ones choice to choose if they are a true existentialist. Any and all human philosophies can be used as a guide to ones path in life in their own morality, however, until it becomes inconvenient then it is tolerable to deviate off ones path to make it work for themselves. The basic foundation of existentialism is, existence precedes essence and there can be no human nature if this is ones belief, as Descartes puts it, in a sense; I think therefore I am . These traits and actions are portrayed throughout the stories of Albert Camus, The Stanger, Raymond Carvers, Short Cuts and Woody Allen s movie, Crimes and Misdemeanors. ... Therefore, he dons the choice onto Marie, however the true insignificance to Marie s proposal is what is being upheld in his decision. The Crucible is a play based upon the events in 1692, which led to the Salem Witch Trials , a series of hearings before local magistrates to prosecute over 150 people accused of witchcraft. This was due to the hysteria caused by a group of girls accusing innocent people of witch craft. The play was set in Salem, Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 1693. Throughout the play Miller creates tension between the characters, however this tension is mainly shown in Act Two. Although the main theme of the Crucible is witch craft, this act concentrates mainly on the relationship of John and Elizabeth Proctor. Miller uses a variety of dramatic devices such as, stage directions, long pauses and silences, entrances of other characters (interruptions), use of contrast, length of sentences and punctuation to express mood and feeling, use of figurative language and repetition and how other characters react to a particular problem. Prior to this act the girls have named the witches and have accused innocent people, for example I saw Goody Hawkins with the devil... Written almost 20 years ago, it is an important concept which has been celebrated as instrumental in the re imagining of black culture. Challenging the taboo between the integration of white and black, it theorised a new modernity of hybridity in culture over the transatlantic space, shaping a new transnational concept. Gilroys theory aimed to get rid of the sociological imagination of race and instead appreciate the cultural heritage and influence of people. This spawned new arguments, theories and research, which helped to combine areas in a new age of interdisciplinary subjects; influencing the study of sociology, geography, politics, anthropology, art and many other areas. Gilroy specifically shows a very deep connection to music and creativity, demonstrating how these traits make a profound transformation in society. For example, the evolution of music represents how the deep rooted pain of black culture has mixed with the romanticised white culture in a hybrid form to create something new. This expressed interest focused on a select few avant garde individuals, who connected to this African transatlantic blackness and these intellectuals inspired his main concepts such as W.E.B. He is the author of the widely acclaimed book The Fifth Discipline: The Art and Practice of the Learning Organization (1990). He can be said to be responsible for the popularity of the concept of a learning organization today. Peter Senge argues that not only we humans learn, but organizations also. However, learning itself may not be enough for the organization to survive in this ever challenging era. In his book, The Fifth Discipline, Senge introduced five disciplines , namely systems thinking, personal mastery, mental models, building shared vision, and team learning, that characterizes an organization as a learning organization.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A learning organization allows all employees to have input in how the organization works. A traditional organization tends to be more bureaucratic and formal. This culture places importance on efficiency and stability. Employees have no or very little say in the organization and only do as they are told. Besides that, there is a clear difference in how both organizations are led. In a learning organization, the leadership is somehow spread out across the organization. Formal leaders do not dictate but listen to the employees and guide the organization in the desired direction through shared visions and goals. In a traditional organization, every single process is done formally under the instructions and dictation of the topmost management. Employees are assumed to be incompetent thus do not make any decisions at all; the leaders are in charge of that. In terms of assessment of overall performance, a learning organization assesses its performance through learning histories, their creativity and innovativeness, the extent of their long term goal achievement and share accountability for the performance. A traditional organization only care about numbers. Performance is assessed through how much profit is made, was the target achieved, and is there too many employees. These are short term effects which may make the organization efficient but does not necessarily help it grow and improve. The organization is rigid and feels stiff . A learning organization ... • 24. Importance Of A Piece Of Writing When you read an article, a book, a newspaper, or even a letter, often times you do not think of all the complexities that the piece of writing incorporates. Every word, every sentence, every idea expressed is carefully thought out before it is presented in writing. This is because the writer must keep in mind their audience whilst they write, some might even go as far as to say that the writer has obligations to the reader. On the other hand, if you stop to contemplate it, you realize that writingis equally important to the writer as it is to the comprehensibility of the reader. Both types of people play a crucial role in making a piece of writing what it is. I stand in agreement with authors Mark Twain and Ursula K. Le Guin, along with an anonymous English professor at Ohio University, who all make claims that correspond to one greater message that the teamwork between writers and readers is what promotes the success of a piece of writing. Mark Twain heavily emphasizes the importance of proofreading writing for clarity. Referring to the revision of a written piece, Twain says, The time to begin writing an article is when you have finished it to your satisfaction. By that time you begin to clearly and logically perceive what it is you really want to say. Twain is saying that once you have written your piece, you have only finished putting your thoughts into words on the paper, but it isn t a well crafted piece of writing just yet; the first draft isn t the final. • 30. Violence In The Virgin Suicides In The Virgin Suicides From this analysis and definition of witchcraft and its relation to the player, gossip, one can see how violence may erupt from such cases of witch accusations. Gossip, as an active player in witch hunts and trials can [...] outrun the intentions of [its] creators, producing more violence than is anticipated (Stewart and Strathern 193). Such unanticipated growth within gossip is the result of, as Hurston writes in Their eyes were watchingGod, words walking without masters (2). One can relate words walking without masters as violence walking without masters. In the way that words, gossip, and rumor can snowball, to a certain degree, violence can as well. After misfortunes, most often deaths, within a community, people attribute misfortune to witches and kill them in order to set matters right (Stewart and Strathern 193). Therefore, we see that violence is retribution in witch hunts and is given agency through gossip. In The Virgin Suicides, the community, in effect, kills the Lisbon sisters through violent gossip in retribution for Cecilia s death and the unrest it caused the community. The Lisbon sister s state is reflected through a tree in their front yard that, for a time [...] stood blighted, trying to raise its stunted arms, a creature clubbed mute (Eugenides 173). Italy joined the Dual Alliance in 1882 forming the Triple Alliance or central powers. Additionally, France formed an alliance with Russia in 1894 and an entente cordiale, or friendship with Britain in 1904. Connor, Tim quotes, Quit he did, resisting calls for a Beatles reunion from fans and promoters; he always insisted that he had no regrets about the breakup of the band and no desire to look back, and he believed that his solo work was as good as, if not better than, anything the Beatles had done (Connor, 1993). • 41. With Reference to Bp Plc’s (British Petroleum’s)... Globalisation is supposed to make national cultures and institutions more homogenous. With reference to BP plc s (British Petroleum s) strategies analyse the possibility that it is old fashioned to consider the influence of the firm s home country s institutions and culture. Introduction In this assignment I will attempt to explore the concept that despite the spread and influence of the globalization of business and industries on our world s economies and cultures, a large multinational firm is still influenced in a fundamental way by its home country s institutions and culture. I will illustrate this discussion with an analysis of the strategies employed by the multinational energy company BP plc (formally British Petroleum). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We can observe that British cultural dimensions reflect low power distance tolerance, high individuality, high masculinity, low tolerance to uncertainty and a short termorientation. BP plc. (British Petroleum) When considering which international firm to use as a case study I was curious to apply this discussion to an industry and firm which is a product of the greatest possible degree of globalisation. In a world society with a hydrocarbon economy I find it hard to conceive of an industry more global than that of energy production and thus a multinational oil company. BP plc, unsurprisingly, is a British company. It was founded in 1908 and owes its early prosperity to exploitation of Iranian (formally Persian) oilfields, where it continued to operate until the revolution in Iran in 1979. Although having lost access to the Iranian oilfields, BP plc had expanded operations to the North Sea and Alaska during the 1960s and 1970s. During the 1980s the British government sold off its holdings in the company under the privatization drive. At the end of the decade the company underwent severe corporate restructuring and downsizing. In the 1990s BP plc undertook several corporate acquisitions which resulted in BP becoming the second largest oil company at that time. Moving forward to the present day, according to the Forbes Global 2000 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 43. Katsu Kokichi’S Autobiography, “Musui’S Story,” Documents Katsu Kokichi s autobiography, Musui s Story, documents the life of a samurai in Japan s late Tokugawa period who adopted the name Musui in his retirement. Katsu is something of a black sheep within his family, being largely uneducated and deemed unfit for the bureaucratic office s samurai of his standing were expected to hold. As such, he typifies in many ways the lower ronin, or masterless samurai, many of whom famously led roaming, directionless lives and wreaked havoc among the urban poor and merchant classes. The novel addresses the decaying power of samurai throughout the Tokugawa period and depicts their struggle to find purpose. Throughout the story, Katsu is impacted by three interconnected systems of power that impact his life... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the challenges of this economic power come through forms of temptations that plagued Japanese men at the time. These include drinking, smoking, gambling, and prostitution. For instance, during his youth, Katsu was [tricked] into going with [Karoku] to the pleasure quarters in the Yoshiwara. [He] enjoyed himself immensely and after that went every night. [He] used up all his money (Musui 44). In this section, Katsu exhibits a lack of self control over his money. His behavior is representative of many low level samurai throughout Tokugawa Japan. These irresponsible economic decisions combine with pre existing financial disparity to place samurai largely in debt. Similarly, these districts were often seen as an escape for samurai and members of the lower class. Just before Katsu has fled home for the second time, he says To take my mind off my woes, I went to the Yoshiwara (Musui 60). Many samurai were disheartened by the fact they were indebted to merchants and had no true purpose in life. As an escape, they fled to districts like the Yoshiwara. Ultimately, economic power is created by a flourishing economy and is challenged by the temptations of man. Domestic power comes from family lineage and is used to determine social status/class. The Japanese class system prohibits individuals from moving between classes to maintain the power of the Daimyo and Shogun. Moreover, domestic power resides in the level of respect granted to ...
