2. The Secret River Essay
A massacre is described as an indiscriminate and brutal slaughter of many people.
by the Collins English Dictionary. In Kate Grenville s, The Secret River, the early
settlers from England massacre a group of aborigines. This is based around true
events, Grenville says The massacre scene is based on eyewitness accounts of the
Waterloo Creek killings in 1838 . The events in The Secret River do not quite reach
the level grotesque violence that was perpetrated by the white settlers. In the Secret
River, one of the settlers with one mighty swipe took off [the aboriginal child s]
head. It fell near his boot and he kicked it away , this is a horrible action that almost
reaches the actions taken by the historical settlers on Myall Creek [an aboriginal
woman]... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her infant child was thrown alive onto the fire. Two young girls were mutilated by
the gang. Creative Spirits. Both of these actions are atrocious and Kate Grenville
successfully draws attention to this part of Australian history that is often ignored.
William Thornhill was not always depicted as a bad man. Glenville writes
Thornhill showing compassion for a poisoned aborigine boy. gingerly he put the
pannikin to the boy s lips and compares the boy to his own son a lad no more than
Dick s age and even himself, he felt the shape of his skull, the same as his own .
This scene shows that Thornhill recognises the humanity in aborigines and does not
subscribe to Smasher s way of thinking in the beginning, Only thing them savages is
good for is manuring the ground. . However, as the novel progresses Thornhill starts
to feel threatened by the aborigines. There are many altercations between the two
peoples that lead to this but a pivotal one is when Smasher Sullivan is found with a
spear through his middle. This happens right after Thronhill and his wife, Sal have an
argument about
3. Jazz Age In The Great Gatsby
Perhaps the most interesting element of Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby and the
perspective it presents to readers on the 1920 s is how it does so in an
irredeemably negative light. One would expect the Jazz age in American history,
lovingly called the Roarin 20 s, to be a time of flourishment, success and
materialization of the American dream. For many this was the case and for even
more it was no more tangible and common than the idea of the nuclear family that
would be propagated in the 1950 s. With the style, fads and even the popular choice
of music for the time. It s not a difficult sell to imply the Jazz age is the non fiction
equivalent of Gatsby s rise and fall in Fitzgerald s novel, or rather the two have
come to be symbolic of one another due to how history played out. What I hope to
prove here, more than anything, is that the Jazz age as it stands in American
history, will always be tied to the success and timelessness of the Fitzgerald novel
and how new generations of Americans can be drawn to it s themes. Perhaps the
biggest appeal the 20 s gave to those who lived through it was the sense that anyone
had the power to control the outcome of their success, directly; a belief in what
today we may call pulling oneself up by their bootstraps . Incidentally this is also the
philosophy Fitzgerald seems most interested in deconstructing in his novel. Due to
success on Wall Street in the stock market as well as public opinion accepting
consumerism as the new norm,
4. The Infant And Toddler Is Very Important For Early...
Introduction: Reading to an infant and toddler is very important for early
development. However, reading to an infant is different than reading to a young
child. In terms of an infant, you frequently do not get through the entire book. An
infant won t be able to fully comprehend what is being read. Infants may want to
hold the book and chew on it or try turning pages themselves. All of these actions are
appropriate and help your child become well known with books and how to handle
them. Readingout loud to your baby is an ac activity that can enhance their vocabulary
among other skills.
General Information: On Wednesday, October 5th, I read to an infantduring my
placement time at the Cortland Child Care Center. The children in the infant
number two room varied from ages 3 months to 11 months old. I chose to read to
Bentley, who is our oldest infant in the room at 11 months. We read The Very
Hungry Caterpillar designed, illustrated, and written by Eric Carle. I chose this
book because I resonate this book strongly with my childhood. The book contains a
variety of concepts necessary early learning such as colors, days of the week, and
numbers. A lot can be understood when readingthis book to an infant or toddler. It
took about 15 minutes to read The Very Hungry Caterpillar to Bentley. We began the
reading at 1:45 until about 2:00 o clock to finish our book. During this time the
younger infants were down for their nap, which was a perfect time to read to Bentley
5. Thomas Malthus
Thomas Malthus addressed many issues such as population growth, methodology of
GDP accounting, value theory, diminishing returns, land rent, and aggregated
demand. Malthus recognized a need to decrease controversies dealing with increasing
poverty and corn laws .
Thomas wrote An Essay on the Principle of Population which introduced the idea that
population when unchecked increased geometrically whereas proper existence
arithmetically at best. Malthus had a system to regulate population which used
preventative and positive checks. These checks reduced birth rate and increased
death rate to keep the population in check. Examples of preventative checks were
moral restraint and positive included famine, misery, plague, and war. Furthermore,
Malthus instilled the idea that poverty and misery were natural punishments to the
lower classes and encouraged restrain from reproduction. As well as no to aid the
poor, for it would allow more children to survive ultimately worsening the hunger
problem. These ideas were later contributed to the harsh Poor Law Amendment of
1834. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This theory addressed the idea of potential insufficiency of effective demand. Thomas
assumed workers would receive an adequate wage and produce more work than
received as wages. The profits of their work must be bought by others in order to
continue production and employment. Some of the profit would be bought by
general consumers but would not equate to all of it. To prevent a glut of produce and
economic stagnation, he encouraged unproductive consumption by landlords, which
they obtain from rent, that doesn t increase cost of production. This further
contributed to the implications that Corn Laws must be retained. Though he favored
landlords having unproductive consumption, anyone living on the interest from
nation debt should not, such as government

7. Nurses Work Hours
Nurses Work Hours I have been a staff nurse in the emergency room for fourteen
years. I have worked a variety of 8, 10, 12, and even 16 hour shifts. I currently am
working 8 and 12 hour shifts on nights. Previously, I also worked some 12 hour day
shifts. I personally have been struggling with working the 12 hour shifts. My
commute to work is 1 hour one way and I have fallen asleep several times driving
home from work. The last four hours of my shift I experience great fatigue and
even have had trouble staying awake. I have come close to having medication
errors and feel that my quality of care is less during the last four hours. When
working 12 hour shifts I average around 5 6 hours of sleep before... Show more

I have no time with my family on the days I work 12 hours. Even though I have
more days off I feel I am spending at least one day recovering after working a long
shift. I personally would rather have interaction with my family daily especially
since the kids are in school. A colleague I interviewed also agreed that when
working 12 hour shifts she had limited time with her family. Effects on Long Hours
on Patient Safety As a result of nursing shortage hospital staff nurses are working
longer hours with few breaks (Chen et al., 2011). In one quantitative study by
Scott, Rogers, Hwang, amp; Zhang (2006) they randomly selected 1148 critical
care nurses and sent them a demographical questionnaire to fill and return related to
medical errors and the hours they worked. The objective of this article was to
describe the work patterns of critical care nurses, determine if there was a
relationship between the occurrence of errors and the hours worked by the nurses,
and explore whether these work hours had adverse effects on nurses vigilance. The
502 respondents consistently worked longer than scheduled and for extended
periods. Longer work duration increased the risk errors and near risk errors and
decreased nurses vigilance. The findings supported the Institute of Medicine
recommendations to minimize the use of 12 hour shifts and to limit nurses work
hours to no more than 12 consecutive hours during a 24 hour period
8. The Impact Of Technology On Technology
The statement linking technology negatively with free thinking plays on recent
human experience over the past century. Surely there has been no time in history
where the lived lives of people have changed more dramatically. A quick reflection on
a typical day reveals how technology has revolutionized the world. Most people
commute to work in an automobile that runs on an internal combustion engine.
During the workday, chances are high that the employee will interact with a computer
that processes information on silicon bridges that are .09 microns wide. Upon leaving
home, family members will be reached through wireless networks that utilize
satellites orbiting the earth. Each of these common occurrences could have been
inconceivable at the turn of the 19th century.
The statement attempts to bridge these dramatic changes to a reduction in the ability
for humans to think for themselves. The assumption is that an increased reliance on
technology negates the need for people to think creatively to solve previous
quandaries. Looking back at the introduction, one could argue that without a car,
computer, or mobile phone, the hypothetical worker would need to find alternate
methods of transport, information processing and communication. Technology short
circuits this thinking by making the problems obsolete.
However, this reliance on technology does not necessarily preclude the creativity that
marks the human species. The prior examples reveal that technology allows for
9. Archeology Personal Statement
I can pinpoint my decision to pursue a career in archeology to a single day. I was
touring the old city of Quebec in the summer of 2012 and happened upon an
archeological dig site that was being opened to the public. It contained the
foundations of some of the first houses built by the French when they settled in
Quebec. Pieces of shattered pottery and rusted coins were on display. I marveled at
the thought of unearthing something previously lost to history. When I began my
high schoolcareer, I had the opportunity to be exposed to a range of social studies
courses in and outside of my high school, all of which have reinforced my interest in
history, and have provided me with a different perspective on history. For instance,
during my junior... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I originally became interested in Dutch history after studying tulip mania in an
Advanced Placement economics class. Tulip mania was a period in the Dutch Golden
Age during which the price of tulip bulbs reached an astonishing high and then
plummeted, causing the Netherlands market to crash. The connection between the
economic crash in the Netherlands and art during the time period fascinates me. The
Rembrandt Tulip, famous for its mosaic virus that causes a multicolor effect of lines,
was made popular after being featured in many paintings of the Dutch masters. It was
this fame that in part led to the drastic increase in the price of tulips. After studying
tulip mania and visiting the Amsterdam/New Amsterdam exhibit at The Museum of
the City of New York, the Dutch Golden Age and how it impacted colonial America
has fascinated me. I have taken an online introduction to Dutch language course in
order to pursue the study of Dutch colonial history further. During my undergraduate
career, I hope to gain valuable research experience by studying abroad in the
Netherlands and publish a paper on the subject of Dutch colonialism in

Cisco Layer 2 Resiliency Compared to HP s IRF
In order to provide speed and reliability, large and enterprise level networks today
are typically constructed in multiple layers. They are the access layer, also called
the network edge layer, the aggregation or distribution layer; and the network core
layer. The access layer is usually a mesh of network switches, linked to other
switches in the aggregation layer, which in turn is linked to the core.
This mesh type application of switches provides multiple paths for network traffic to
flow. What this means is that if one link in the traffic flow or a switch goes down,
traffic can continue to flow using an alternate path. This type of mesh ... Show more

In contrast, Cisco Layer 2 Resiliency advantages are claimed to offer rapid failover
without service disruption. The layer 2 is designed to streamline change
management and service turn up without WAN disruption with fewer errors. It
offers a high availability through real time recovery and resiliency at the network,
device and design levels. Cisco Layer 2 Resiliency offers increased system
redundancy at the platform level, network security through access layer defense,
identity based trust, pervasive security and management as well as providing device
posture assessments. Operational efficiency is achieved through automated
configuration, proactive diagnostics and simplified troubleshooting. This is
designed to provide predictable application performance to support converged
applications as well as support IP multicast for new applications. As with HP s IRF
Resiliency, there are several disadvantages associated with Cisco Layer 2 Resiliency.
The router supports REP only when the router is running the metro IP access or the
metro access image. You have to configure each segment port or an incorrect
configuration will cause forwarding loops in networks. REP can only manage one
failed port within a segment. Multiple port failures within the REP segment cause
high loss of network connectivity.
Due to its simplistic manageability and scalability I would recommend HP s IRF
Resiliency over Cisco Layer
11. Age of Doubt In Europe in the 16th Century
In the 16th Century, Europeans had their faith shattered and were forced to realize
that there was doubt in what they believed in. From the countless wars being fought
in the name of religion, to the once great and wealthy countries that needed to
reaffirm their place in the world, all that they had once taken for granted was
suddenly cast into doubt (446). Europeans were desperately searching for new
foundations to put their faith in in the face of intellectual, religious, and political
challenges (446). This period is an example of the expression Age of Doubt, Age of
Uncertainty .
The wars going on throughout Europe through this era were claiming territories

With the help of alliances William the Silent made with France, Germany, and
England, the Netherlands was divided up with Calvinism practiced in the north and
Catholicism in the Spanish controlled South (432 433). Between 1618 and 1648,
Cardinal Richelieu led the Thirty Years Waragainst the Huguenots, with France
against Austrian and Spain and with Germany getting the brunt of the casualties (434
437). An example of the viciousness of the attacks were described by author Hans
Jakob Christoph von Grimmelshausen in his fictional memoir Siplicissimus (the
Simpleton), where he illustrated how each had his own device to torture the
peasants, and each peasant had several tortures (435). This ended with the signing of
the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, which left France in a powerful position in Europe,
Germany and Austria losing not only in casualties but in the power structure of
Europe, and Europe as a checkerboard of Protestant and Catholic principalities (437).
The price revolution in Europe was another contributing factor giving Europeans
cause for concern. Europe s population grew after the Black Plague, yet the growth
of food remained constant, which led to higher food prices for the large demand.
While the price of food increased, the rate of wages did not match the increase.
Additional factors was the surplus of bullions
12. Steel Beams with Timber Webs
INTRODUCTION 1.1Objective of Proposed Project This project will develop
models enabling the structural design of steel beams with timber webs (SBTW).
The beams analyzed will have three configurations: an I Beam type where the steel
flange width, bf, is greater than the timber web thickness, tw; a Box Beam
configuration where the steel flange width is equal to the timber web thickness;
and an Architectural Beam style where the steel flange width is less than the
timber web thickness and the steel flanges are totally encapsulated within the
timber web. The three beam styles are shown in Figure 1. The physical properties
of steel beams with timber webs structures are expected to be highly influenced by
the nature of the connection between steel and timber. However, the knowledge of
the macro mechanical properties of glued steel timber joints is still limited. The
work to be performed intends to increase the body of knowledge on this subject.
This research study was fomented by the desire to reduce the aspect ratio of long
span glued laminated beams. Additionally, the architectural style beam has the
possibility of providing the necessary fire protection for the steel while being an
extremely aesthetic alternative for exposed structures. The steel beam with a
timber web would also be a good candidate for stringer highway bridges with a
glulam deck intended for secondary roads. These bridges could be rapidly installed
with a minimum of skilled labor decreasing road closure
13. The Effects Of Technology On Technology
Children are growing up with all this technology interfering with the children s
childhood and health. Parents should limit screen time for their children two hours
a day. Technology is over powering our world today. Parents shouldn t introduce
technology to their children s life quite yet wait until the children are at least three
or four years of age. The use of digital device during a young age can interfere with
the childs health. If the children are exposed to digital devices when they are young
they will have mental and health problems. Parents letting their young children s play

Therefore, the parents should talk to their young children so they can start
developing the sounds we make when the parents talk to them. Too little
communication can be bad for the children because the children won t expand
their brain that much. Parents need to be models for their children. While we re all
embracing these great aspects of this digital devices, parents have to strike a
balance turn them off and spend time with their children, says Kathleen Clarke
Pearson. A young children will gain more stimulation when they are spoken to and
read to rather than putting them in front of a TV show. Parents should monitor the
children s screen time, so the children won t be watching things their parents don t
approve of. Children can get bad behavior by the things they are exposed too on
their digital devices. The internet is very big for a child to be roaming with no
supervision and can be exposed to violent videos. While, the children are watching
this videos they will probably catch some of the actions they are doing in the video
and later on they will show them. However, there are some good shows and websites
for young children to view so they can expand their brain and gain life skills. Also the
parents can sit down with their children and their technology and go through some
activities that they can do together to get that full development into the children s
brain. whether, the parents set a limit to the

The classroom library scored __6___ points. I would make this classroom library
more diverse by adding more books about children with disabilities and books in
the native language of ELL learners attending the school. During my observation of
the library the only book I found that represented children with disabilities was a
short book called My Friend is Blind . I could not find any books that children with
other disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy could read and relate to. Nor was there
any books that other students could read to gain a better understanding of their
classmates who may have a disability. I also noticed that although there were books
about different cultures, every book was in English, there weren t any books in
the Native language of ELL learners. I believe that having books in the library in
the native language of ELL learners will not only further their learning. Learning a
new language can be very difficult, and not having any books in the students Native
Language may make them feel as if it isn t okay for them to speak that language or
that it isn t welcomed in the school, therefore having other books in the students
Native Language will help them to feel a sense of belonging that they might not
have felt before. Reflection Reflect on the selected books as a whole, addressing the
following: Do the books in the classroom library reflect the identities of students?
Who is represented? Who is missing? As I observed the school library,
16. Global Warming Should Be The Paramount Struggle Of
Our Time
It is often said that humans are the largest threat to Earth, but not because of
violence between one another. Humans are the largest threat to Earth because we
as a species pollute the air, land, and water of the very planet we call home.
Without Earth all life as we know it will cease to exist. Global warming is the
product of the pollutants created by mankind. If mankind as a whole does not
change its ways we will ruin our one and only planet that is suitable to sustain life. In
Warm, Warmer, Warmest an article by Nicholas D. Kristof

researching this topic I used multiple resources to better understand what Nicholas
Kristof is explaining in his article. I first looked at a government run website that
helped explain global warming and how it is affecting us today. Then I looked at
news articles from different news organizations. Lastly I watched a video that
explained why we can no longer ignore global warming. All of those resources
helped me better understand my research topic and I feel that I have gained more
knowledge about global warming. Warm, Warmer, Warmest is an article written by

Anything can and will happen especially in combat, that s why the team member
should make sure that the team or squad leader know where the soldier and his or

No matter what someone is always responsible for equipment in the Army.
Accountability is important because it assures someone that needs will be met. If

Without accountability you would not be able to put your trust in someone to

18. Julia Wood Epilogue
I feel that the most pressing issue involving communication, gender, and culture
would be acceptance. The world needs to take into consideration that even though
they want things to remain the same, things are bound to change.
After reading the Epilogue and the textbook, I realize that we need to be willing to
accept what families decide is the best choice for the work load both parents have.
Growing up in a home where both parents had jobs outside the home helped me
appreciate both members contributing to the family. This also helps me realize that
even though one family member may decide to stay home, that does not make them
any less important to the family overall. A statement that Julia Wood made in the
Epilogue stood out to me. She says that As women and men, you can affect what
society expects of and admires in each sex (Wood, 321). This showed me that we

It is important to monitor the way in which we choose to talk to one another. There
are many things in society that people find offensive. As the next decade comes
into view, society needs to grasp the differences in people and that not everyone
reacts to things the same. Some people find things very unpleasant without others
being aware of it. Wood continues to talk in the Epilogue about our generation
taking the time to recognize that not everyone is the same in the world. She says
Maybe your generation will replace the melting pot metaphor with one that
recognizes commonality without obliterating real and valuable differences among
people (Wood, 322). I think that she makes a great point here. We have been raised
to understand that there is a melting pot in our society. This idea may need to change

first time I saw a pair of mom jeans not being worn by a mother was on the streets
of Boston in early fall. That day they stuck out for two reasons, the first being the
strength of the girl who was wearing the jeans in such humid weather, and the
second being their appalling ugliness. I never forgot those jeans. Their image
became ingrained in my eyes and I began noticing them more in my daily life.
Grandmothers at the park, holding the hands of small children, middle aged women
pushing shopping carts at Target. When out in public, I would point these pants out
to friends, who would more often than not reply disinterestedly, but with a mild
undertone of disgust. How could someone leave their house knowing that they are
wearing the ugliest pants known to mankind? After hearing comments like these,
the allure of the mom jean grew stronger, so I did what anyone would do, and
researched the pant. I came across images of the jeans, but they weren t true mom
jeans. True mom jeans have loose, baggy legs, plain pockets, a tight waist sitting
above the hips, and an untapered leg. The jeans I was finding online all had narrow
legs and bejeweled pockets,
22. Why You Shouldn T Judge Anyone Analysis
Tupac Shakur once said only god can judge me that which does not kill me can
only make me stronger i don t see why everybody feel as though that they gotta tell
me how to live my life . You shouldn t judge anyone because of what you think
about them because you really don t know who they really until you actually meet
them . One should never judge a person by their appearance because judging them
is never okay to do . You shouldn t judge anyone on how they are or what you hear
about them because not everything you hear about someone is true . You never
really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view until
you climb into his skin and walk around it. pg 36 . Scout tells atticus that she was

It connects to my claim because judging someone without knowing them is never
okay to do because people are sometimes a different person then what you expect
them to be . Aunt Alexandra eventually accepts Scout to a certain extent, but she
never really gets over the fact scout is determined, willful, and will never fit the
stereotype of a Southern lady. This evidence shows that ScoutВґs aunt wonВґt ever
really understand why sheЕ› a tom boy and why canВґt she be a Southern lady like
like her aunt . This evidence relates to my reason by alexandra is kind of judging
scout by the way she is and by the way her appearance is . It relates back to my claim
by me saying people shouldnt judge anyone by there
23. Analysis Of Crooks In John Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men
Crooks is one of the prime representations of loneliness. Being black at the time of
the great depression, he is treated as an inferior being, despite being clever and
literate (a rare thing for a farm worker in those times). He is also considered
disabled, although he only has a minor injury that does not prevent him from doing
his job on the farm. This is because he is a negro buck , since black people were
treated as slaves and had no place in society during these times. Steinbeck shows
this by giving Crooks his own place in the barn alongside the ranch animals, and
using a specific choice of words to describe Crook s shed a little shed that leaned of
the wall of the barn as if to say that Crooks is not strong enough to survive on his...

mean to insult him, but they also do not think to call him by his name. All of these

24. The Theme Of Madness And Insanity In William
Shakespeare s...
l, Introduction
This papers goal will be to discuss whether Hamlet is feigning his insanity or if he
uses it as a tool to reach his ends. The theme of madness is a common tool used in
William Shakespeare s Hamlet. Most of it is centred about the protagonist young
Hamlet himself. Beginning with the appearance of the ghost of Hamlet s father, from
early on in the play, Hamlet and others are forced to question their grasp on reality,
as well as their own possibility for believing in the existence of the Supernatural.
And yet, Hamlet is not alone in his apparent struggle with insanity. Hamlet s love
interest Ophelia too, suffers from a particular kind of madness after her father is
murdered and it gets reinforced by Hamlet s rejection and betrayal. ... Show more

He never explicitly explains his own motives not even in his soliloquies. We have
to keep in mind that the situation of the play is already developed before he comes
on the stage and the full solution is reached only after his death. Hamlet s tendency
for hesitation or passivity is reason for a lot of criticism, justified or not However,
it comes into full maturity when it comes to the task given by the ghost of old
Hamlet. The prince is constantly putting of the instruction for that he is not ready
and not done thinking about it. For him it naturally poses as a moral struggle; it is
not his private revenge that he has to carry out but he is merely the sword of a
greater invisible power. It appears that his tragic erroris his inability to act and his
tendency towards reflection that ultimately leads to his death. As it stands Hamlet is
not someone who is lacking insight but rather someone who is caught between being
and doing. These inner conflict modern psychologists know as neurosis, and it is only
by study of neurosis that one can learn the fundamental motives and instincts that
move men. (Philips 2009). Being the victim of a neurosis would certainly attest the
theory of insanity, however it lacks
25. Determining The Ksp Value For Silver Acetate Essay
Determining the Ksp value for silver acetate.
Introduction:
An equilibrium constant for a solid substance that is dissolving in an aqueous
solution is represented by the solubility product constant, where the concentrations of
different ions from the solid substance (compound) are used to calculate the solubility
product constant. If the solubility product constant vale is high then the substance is
very soluble in an aqueous solution. The solubility product constant is denoted by
Ksp, and for a common reaction: aA(s) в‡Њ cC(aq)+dD(aq)T
The Ksp= [C(aq)]c[D(aq)]d
The concentration of the solid (aA) doesn t contribute to the equilibrium constant
because their concentration doesn t change the expression of the equilibrium
constant. Any change in their concentration isn t that important as the ions and
therefore they are taken out of the expression, hence, the solubility product constant
represents the amount of solid that can be dissolved in a solution.
One important effect on the solubility ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The solution was swirled to induce precipitation, the swirling was for 30 minutes.
The solution was filtered through a dry filter paper and a dry funnel into a dry 250
ml beaker. The temperature of the filtrate was then measured and recorded. A clean,
dry burette was assembled and filled with the potassium thiocyanate solution, the
burette reading was recorded, then into a clean, 50 ml flask, 5.00 ml of the filtered
silver acetate solution was pipetted. 30 drops of the indicator (saturated ferric alum
in 1.0 N HNO3), a few drop of the thiocyanate solution was added, then continued to
be added dropwise, with swirling after each addition, until one drop gives a
permanent light orange colour. The whole process of titrating silver acetate with
potassium thiocyanate was repeated two more times with batches of 5.00 ml of the

27. The Invention Of The Electric Light Bulb
Can you ever imagine a world without light bulb? Before light bulb was created, the
night can only be lit by the moon and stars. People working and traveling after
sunset could only use candles or oil lamps, which caused many inconveniences.
Without any bright light, moving inside your own house even seemed dangerous.
However, things changed after the ambitious inventors brought their bright idea,
which was to light the world, to life. The invention and the commercialization of
light bulb not only changed the way people live, but also became a technological
breakthrough for future energy use in our daily lives. The electric light bulb has
been called the most important invention ever since the discovery of fire. Before
eighteenth centuries, there are limited sources of light. The most common
artificial light sources for people to use were only candles, oil lamps, and fire.
These light sources not only emitted very weak lights, but also produced smokes
and awful orders, which made people impossible to work productively after
sundown. Many houses at that time period were made of timbers, therefore, having
fire or open flame inside the house was hazardous. Once a house caught on fire, the
entire neighborhood would be in danger, since there was no running water inside the
buildings. Darkness was the epitome of evil. When the sun went down and darkness
spread through, the night became the realm of crime. The darkness worked as the
perfect cover for thief, murderer, and rapist.
28. Reasons Behind the Failure of the Provisional Government...
Reasons Behind the Failure of the Provisional Government
The provisional government was brought about after the fall of the Tsarist
government collapsed. This was done purely because of lack of support for the
Tsar and being the only major party. They were in power for 8months and after
making five serious errors; they were removed from power by force. Kerensky ran
the provisional government and it was his lack of judgement, just like the Tsars
stupidity and gullibility that let him down.
The first error he made was that he made no attempt to make the provisional
government legitimate. It never held a democratic election for fear of losing status.
Even though at the start of their reign ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This left an army that was majorly weakened and people thought that, like the Tsar
he was a loser of wars. The populations now have an even worse opinion of him and
it was not good for his popularity.
Kerensky underestimated the Bolshevik s and Lenin. Once he had fought off their
uprising with Lenin s plan of Peace for the Army, Bread for the Workers and Land
for the Peasants , he thought sending Lenin to exile was sufficient. After Lenin
accepted that he had lost his chance to become President, an uprising in Petrograd
(Kornilov Affair a point I will go onto in my next paragraph) means Kerensky has to
rearm the Bolsheviks in order to retain order. This leaves other countries and
supporters of Lenin with a chance to send him back into the country and to try and
push the country into another revolution (bringing about communism ideally). Lenin
s plan to try to please as many people as possible could come back into effect and
this time it had a substantially negative effect on Kerensky s position in Russian
parliament.
Continuing from my last point, Kerensky s lack of judgement about the Kornilov
affair was a definitive error of his. He thought that the Bolshevik s were attempting to
take over Russia by means of a coup, thus he asked Kornilov to send part of his army
to protect him. When they got there,

Transgender Diversity Assignment
Members of the LGBT community have battled with societal norms since the
beginning of its emergence. Here the focus will be specifically geared to the
transgender members of the community. Vocabulary around the issue has changed
over time as well as the meanings and connotations. Through history there have
been may terms associated with gender nonconformity: 1) Transvestite: first used
in 1910 to describe a person who dresses in clothing of the opposite sex,
traditionally associated as men. 2) Transsexual: fist used in 1946, refers to a person
who lives life as a gender different than their sex assigned at birth. 3) Transgender
(Trans): first used in 1971 and is the current terminology preferred by the community.
It is functions as an umbrella term that encompasses those who identify as a gender
different from their biology and includes people who may or may not undergo sexual
reassignment surgery or hormone therapy (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender,
Queer, Intersex, Asexual Resource Center,2017; Whittle,2010). Portrayal and
perception of transgender persons has long been a controversial issue. Knowledge of
its history and development will offer greater insight to the present day issues and
their effect on society and the LGBT community. With that information, we can apply
proper techniques for social workers when dealing with transgender men and women.
While the word transgender was not seen until 1971, advancements for those with

The term Queen is use to described a woman of foremost or preeminent respect

32. Foucault s Power And Power
Foucault s Power (Intro) Power, what is power? Is it a thing, something that can be
controlled by a person or group? Or is it an omnipresent force with no clear
distinction of what it is and what it is not? My views before being introduced to
Foucault was: power is an attainable thing, but elusive. For example, it is said one
has power, if one has enough money. Another example I commonly hear is that, the
government (the State, the law, police) holds too much power. My final example is,
in my opinion, power is usually viewed as a negative thing by ones that do not hold
said power. Michel Foucault, a philosopher, challenged the traditional view of power
by analyzing power in a series of studies of different forms of power, such as from
his books: Madness and Civilization, Discipline and Punish, and The Order of
Things to name a few. What Foucault found through his critical observations was that
the concept of power in the traditional views were too narrow and specific; not a
singularity composed of only negative aspects but also a dualism that leans much
heavier on the side of positivity than vice versa and an omnipresent force (or rather
relationships) that may be used through various techniques but not owned at all.
DEFINITION OF FOUCAULT S POWER

33. Persuasive Essay On Rodent Removal
Rodents are a problem in homes across the world.
Mice and rats are the most common invaders. They re attracted to the prospect of
easy shelter and food. You may also find yourself up against squirrels that view attics
as protected nesting areas.
Still, it s troubling when you discover evidence of rodent activity in your home. It s
not just the violation of your food or the need to sanitize areas where you find rodent
droppings.
Rodents carry diseases that humans can catch, such as hantavirus and leptospirosis,
which makes them a threat to your whole family.
If you re up against an infestation, you have a number of rodent removal options
open to you. Let s take a close look at some of the things you can do for proper
rodent removal.
Traps and Poison
Traps and poison are widely employed rodent removal solutions, but there are some
things to consider.
You have a choice between several types of lethal traps.
There are electric traps that kill with a high voltage charge. Glue traps simply keep
the mouse stuck in place and it dies from starvation or dehydration.
Snap traps break the mouse s neck. These come in both an open and closed style.
The closed style traps are better for homes with pets and kids, since paws and
fingers can t get caught by the spring loaded bar.
If rodent killing just isn t your speed, you can also opt for a humane trap. Pro tip:
take the trap far from your home before releasing any mice. That prevents them from
coming straight back inside.

34. A Diverse Workforce
The problem iNOVA does not have a diverse workforce. Of the 103 employees, 78
of the employees are male. 89 of the 103 are white. (INOVA REPORT) There are a
number of reasons why this could have happened. In smaller companies like
iNOVA, many new employees are friends or associates of current employees who
have been recommended. (Miller) People often associate with those similar to
themselves, so those who they recommend will be like themselves, creating a
homogenous environment. Likewise, it has been proven that hiring managers
tend to hire people that they themselves get along with on a personal level rather
than their qualifications. (Miller) People who are different and may bring
diversity to a workplace are thus overlooked by managers in favor of those who the
hiring staff relate to because they share similar interests or backgrounds.
Oftentimes ethnicity also plays a role in human bias. A study from the National
Bureau of Economic Research shows that having a white sounding name can lead
to as many job offers as someone with an African American sounding name who
possesses an additional eight years of research. (Francis) Regardless of whether this
bias is conscious or not, it has a negative impact upon companies that lack diversity
(such as ourselves) as we are often missing out on much more qualified and talented
candidates due to human bias when hiring. Benefits of Diversity Besides improving
a company s social perception, there are many proven benefits to a

We all have to start somewhere when we move to a new town, new state or even a

to improve ourselves to move classes in the American system. In America we either
belong to the lower class, middle class or upper class. We are classified either by
our: jobs, education, aspirations, budgets and values. But most of us fit into the
middle class, because many have started from the lower class and worked their way
up to middle class, thanks to the mobility between social classes. There is mobility in
the U.S. because like my father who came from Mexico to look for a better future
for my mom and two children found mobility to move from lower class to middle
class. My father started from the lower class and worked his way up to middle class
and got his construction license and finally was a contractor assistant for a
construction company in Arizona. In the United States there is three social classes.
There is a lower class nation, middle class, and the upper classnation. The lower
class is the working class the blue collar , the middle class is the white collar jobs
and the upper class is the independently wealthy class. In the united states there is
more people that fit into the middle class than into any of the other two social
classes. In the article Middle Class In America by the U.S. Department of Commerce
states that, Middle class families are defined by their aspirations more than their

Getting accepted into a University is one of the most exciting experinces that
someone can have. However, along with much joy one is often over come with fear
and anxiety. Being a college student comes with many obligations, all of which
revolve around getting good grades. One of the most anxiety provoking classes that a
student can take is math. Although, if you hold yourself to some strict guidelines and
plan for success, by having good time managementskills, always taking notes, and
keeping your self confidenceup when your confused. These will make mastering
math much easier and you will give you a higher success rate. At times College
can seem like a juggling act; between going to classes, studying for tests and doing
homework. All it really comes down to is being effective at time management. It
is difficult to figure out your heiracry of commitments and alotting the appropriate
amount of time to each task. There are many steps one can take in order to become
good at time management. First, you should make a plan. Right when you get
your sylabus for class, you should write down all of your assignments, quizes,
papers and exams into your planner. This way you can visually see what you need
to get done, and within each week. Second, you need to attend each class. Believe
it or not you are wasting time by not going to class. It takes three times as slong to
learn the material on your own, as it would if you simply would have atteneded class
in the first place.
39. Jake Dinos Chapman
Within the Chapman s portfolio violence, abjection and fetishism combine to form an
aesthetic immersed in taboo. Shock is deviously employed as a constructive means to
overwhelm the viewer s emotions while provoking a sense of shared existence. These
communal undertones allow the psyche to unfold thus showing an intuitive take on
transgression. A deviant act, however small it may be, entices an individual to step
outside the strict parameters of man made law, causing a euphoric feeling to resonate
from within. At the same time this act creates an appalling sensation due to morality.
This paradoxical effect stems from the very nature of prohibition which, denotes that
its very existence cannot be conceived without an initial violation. The... Show more

As a result, his satirical edge dulled and historical framework began to unravel. Now,
themes of insanity began to immerge from Goya s series. The contorted positions of
each castrated figure displayed the unbridled emotions of Goya as he lost control
while creating. This emotional involvement undercuts the formal quality of social
commentary and delivers primal rage as a bastardized answer. From grotesque
aesthetics a moral lens is crafted, allowing the public to assemble information and
weigh its aesthetic qualities against conceptual meaning. If there is a risk of
offending morality with imagery then satire is deployed as a tool to coerce justifiable
acceptance. The Chapman s intentions strike satire from this planned mechanism.
Without it, transgression is forced into the public eye; causing liberation from
structural confinement and eventually redefining the aesthetics of basic humanistic
intuition. While Goya s works are prominent in critically defending Jake and Dinos,
they are not the conceptual focal point. The link between past and present wars is too
obvious of an allusion for the deviant nature of the brothers. Purity of transgression
seems to be the direction of their focus due to the abrasive treatment of subject matter,
primitive undertones and relentless repetition. Hans Bellmer s Die Puppe utilizes a

management team is a team of people that have the knowledge and skills on how to

compromise of individuals such as teachers, social workers, police officers, nurses,
paramedics, psychologists, and school principals. School counselors should also be

Also, another ethical consideration for school counselors would be if the student is
a danger to themselves or another student, then it s important to disclose that
information along with getting their parents involved. The legal considerations
that must be applied when responding to a student crisis is that school counselors
have a duty to protect students when they re going through a crisis. Going back to
the crisis of a student being a danger to another student, school counselors have the
legal duty to protect that other student as well as reporting to the authorities
(Kanel, 2015). It s important that school counselors know how to collaborate
before, during, and after a crisis. Before a crisis, the school counselor can
collaborate with teachers and other school staff members by training them and
coming up with ways on how to help students during a crisis situation. During a
crisis, the school counselor will show other staff members how to comfort students
during their time of need in the crisis situation. After a crisis, the school counselor
will help staff members by showing them how to help students recover from a
crisis as well as providing them resources if they need any more additional help.
The way that collaboration assist in a crisis response is that school counselors and
staff members come together to work as a team help students heal through a crisis
situation (Kelley, 2015). As for a post crisis response, School counselors and staff
members must prepare to come up with a plan along with intervention strategies and
resources in order to help students recover successfully from a crisis situation. There
are many techniques for school counselors to take into consideration that would be
helpful for students who experience a traumatic event such as cognitive behavioral
therapy,

42. Should Juvenile Criminals Be Tried As Adults
The definition of a juvenile is a person of a young age who has committed a crime.
This young age may vary from one through seventeen. Essentially these juveniles are
considered to be children, in which case means they are not fully matured. Children
mess up; they do things they are not supposed to, test limits, and push people to their
max because they are not fully aware of the consequences that lie ahead of them due
to the fact that their maturity level is still relatively low. With that being said,
juveniles should not be tried as adults when being sentenced because these teens have
not fully developed. Throughout all five articles that discuss several cases in juvenile
crimes, there are many different opinions in which they should or

Obscenity in Fun Home
Should it be acceptable to implement obscene literature in the education curriculum,
even at the cost of one s moral beliefs? Fun Home, written by Alison Bechdel, is a
graphic memoir that illustrates the relationship of the character Alison with her
father, Bruce. Although they did not share an intimate father daughter bond in Alison
s childhood, Alison grows up to bear many of her father s traits, such as being queer.
Unfortunately, her memories with her father are short lived, as her father commits
suicide when she turned twenty. As a result, she attempts to unlock her closeted
father s life and understand his struggles. A recurring theme throughout Fun Home is

The College of Charleston had assigned Fun Home to the incoming students. The
House lawmakers were not pleased with Fun Home s theme of homosexuality and the
text s depiction of sexual imagery. Some students, in retaliation had organized
protests convincing the governor to stop the House from cutting down the funds
(McCammon, 2014). On the other hand, some students down in North Carolina, one
being Brain Grasso, agreed to the fact that the story contains obscenity. They refused
to read the book as its content goes against their religious and moral beliefs (Grasso,
2015).
Professors might contend on the issue of academic freedom. However, obscenity is
prevalent in the book Fun Home and is gratuitously portrayed through the graphic.
This could violate the moral principles of some students. By incorporating this book
in the curriculum, the professors would not be redeeming social importance (Rault
100). The dictionary definition of obscenity is the depiction of sexual matters in a
way that infringes on standards of decency and morality. However, the extent to
which it contravenes the standards of morality is entirely subjective. My
interpretation derives from a Supreme Court ruling that concluded in a 1966 case that
in order to establish obscenity, the content must be utterly without redeeming social
importance (Rault 100). I agree with those professors who argue academic freedom:
44. Essay About Blues Music
Introduction Blues is a music genre originating in Africa .This genre emerged with
the introduction of African people as slaves to America s south. Slaves were
employed in poor conditions in the cotton fields before the Civil War. Making music
meant avoiding the pain for them. People think Blues music is slow and smooth
because the lyrics of the Bluesmusic always includes depression, loneliness and anger.
After the emancipation movement, Blues expanded to lots of states. Each states
blended their own culture with the blues and then they created their own specific
blues genres. Some of them Mississippi Delta Blues and Urban (Chicago) Blues.

Recordings which were recorded in the city was quite professional than the Delta
Blues records because in the Delta records were made in the portable studios.
Moreover the cost of studios were cheaper in the Urban. Blues artists easily
worked in the professional studios. When the Blues artist started to make more
professional recordings, they are realized by white people. Firstly they wanted to
introduce blues music to white teens. Before blues move into the North, blues
recordings only appealed to Blacks. They thought we should offer the blues to
white people. Also they sung in bands which are founded by white people. Due to
this well planned strategy, people understood that the blues is not only made by
black people or listened by black people. The blues gain considerable popularity in

The term outsourcing refers to the act of contracting out business activities and
procedures to a third party. The act of outsourcing sometimes involves the transfer of
assets from one organization to the other. The term is also used to describe the act of
handling the control of public services to the private corporations. Outsourcing
mainly involves both the local and foreign contracting. At times, the term is used to
describe relocation of business organizations to another country which is a also
known as off shoring. This term is very popular in the U.S especially in the 21st
century (Davies, pg. 21). The main motivation for the activity of outsourcing is the
financial saving due to the reduced international labor market rates. The... Show more

The American labor markets have been severely affected by the increasing
outsourcing as this has seen the market to lose a great number of the their services
thus making a significant number of the skilled workers to lose their jobs while
those who are undergoing their training programs are not sure whether they will
secure a job in the country not. That means if they will not find one then they will
have to opt to be self employed, jobless or opt to outsource their skills to foreign
countries. This has led to more American workers who are trained to look for jobs
that they do not fit or that which they are not trained to perform due to lack of job
that they are specialized in as the companies have taken the operations to other
countries like China and India (Anil, pg. 7). These two countries have taken the big
share of the American manufacturing industries that have outsourced their services.
Thus the labor market is logged with competent workers who have he required skills
but that are contributing nothing or less t the growth of our economy.
Outsourcing has resulted into some companies reducing their workers as they have
taken most of their manual operations to foreign countries thus they do not requires a
large working number of employees as in the previous situation. Previously,
everything was done locally from production, warehousing and distribution where as
today these companies have taken almost 60 to 75 percent of these

Based on past data, the current control limit for the organization is 99.73% for this
process, with the random selection of 16 soles over a 15 hour period for a size 10.
Therefore, in order to improve quality we must set up control limits for sample means
using standard deviation. The random selection of 16 soles we must find the overall
mean to calculate its control limits.
The average length in the sample size can be determined by adding the lengths and
dividing them by the total number of samples
10+10.3+10.2+10.1+10+10+10.2+10+9.9+10+9.8+10+10.8+10.6+9.7/15=10.11
The average mean of the samples size are 10.11
Now that the average mean size has been determined, we must determine the UCL
upper control limits and the LCL lower control limits.
The UCL = x+zox= 10.375
The LCL = x zox=9.625
Based on the UCL of 10.375 and the LCL of 9.625, samples that fall out of the

48. Using The Root Cause Analysis And `` 5 Whys ``
I must admit, I am uncomfortable putting work conflicts on the internet, and even
more uncomfortable exposing personal relationship conflicts that should inherently
be private. I also do not watch the news, because I do not trust it as a source of
information. Thus, for the purposes of this essay, I shall describe the most recent
inner conflict of note that I have experienced instead, and analyse it using the Root
Cause Analysisand 5 Whysstrategies that were discussed in this week s reading.
While it is not a particularly recent source of conflict it happened about three or
four years ago it resulted in some life changing events. I shall briefly describe the
timeline: in January 2012, I move to New Zealand to study for a diploma in 3D
Animation and VFX. By November 2012, I had decided that I no longer wanted to
be studying towards a qualification in the VFX industry, and decided to enrol at one
of the universities in Auckland for a degree in Hospitality instead. By March 2013, I
had turned right around, and enrolled in a different school for a degree in none other
than 3D Animation and VFX.
Using the Root Cause Analysis and 5 Whys strategies, I shall explore the reasons for
these changes I made what made me deflect from my original course, and then later
why I came back to it. Many of these observations are made in hindsight, so may
sound more logical and rational than I truly was at the time.
First, I shall consider why I left my first course of study:
49. Tenebrism In 1600s
Art plays a big role in history, and continues to be a big part of every culture in the
world. Art gives everyone a way to express themselves whether it is a personal
reason, or about society in general. In each century a new way of creating art was
introduced and is respected to the day and still practiced. Tenebrism was
introduced in the Baroque era of the 1600 s. This is an art form related to realism
that was mastered, before tenebrism was later seen. The start of this art form came
about, because of what was happening in society in the 1600 s. In the Baroque era
there was a guy named, Caravaggio, who is considered the founder of the art of
tenebrism. The art of tenebrism tells the history of Europe with using light and dark
colors in the paints for adding effects for the viewers. This started in Rome when the
problem of different churches started to branch off of the Catholic Church. These
religious consisted of Lutherans and Protestants were the main ones, and became a
huge problem for the Catholic Church, because up until then that was the major big
religion. Tenebrism was used mostly as propaganda in an effort to get people to
continue with the Catholic faith and nothing else. Caravaggio was going through a

The dark background relates to the fact that in the Baroque era, they were going
through a dark time, almost to say lead by a dark force that was taking away people

in God or Jesus, and my opinion is that all these paintings didn t just focus on them
the also included angels, Mary, or anyone else considered important in the Catholic
faith. That is why I think that they only highlight the face to give these different
people to acknowledgment them and everything else is casted in the dark with the

Kali Linux:
Kali Linux is a Linux distribution which is primarily for the security service such

This type of search use case is useful in identifying the tables and entries with
confidential/certified data which can be a huge loss in case of an attack.
The most important functionality that it offers is that it can help create an out of
band stateful TCP connection between the attacker and the database which can then
help us emulate an actual scenario where the system is under attack.
These are the various ways in which sqlmap gives us a way to protect and secure
our database servers underlying the operation system of our web and mobile
applications from a potential cyber security t.
Reaver:
Reaver implements a robust and practical brute force attack targeting a Wi Fi
Protected Setup (WPS) enabled router. It uses all the permutations and combinations
on 6 digit pins to obtain the passphrases out of it. [5] It can crack wps pins
extremely quickly with the time for default configured pin averaging around 3 5
seconds.
Usage: Run reaver is used to test wireless penetration for Wi Fi enabled applications
and or web servers. It can take seconds or hours based on the target network. It may
vary based on the password length field as well as the pin configuration restrictions.
Once we have the passphrases obtained by reaver for our use case and the time
taken for doing so, we can evaluate the general design for the password security for
our application and the amount of bounding restrictions we ask the user to take care of

in the Midwest farming between the earl 1800s and the present day are numerous,
for example 90% of Americans lived and worked on the farms in the 1800s, then by
the early 1900s that number had dropped to forty percent. Today, only two percent of
Americans live and work on farms (Arago, Web). The effect was that all farmers that

One that stood out was the horse drawn tool and the reaper, This new tool had
sharper blades that cut through the thick prairie roots found throughout the
Midwest. Another important tool that defined this period in Midwest farming was
the reaper, a device that could cut grain better than the scythe (Argo, Web). These
tools are what started the evolution of farming allowing it to grow at a rapid pace
once they started becoming more innovated. From my readings in farming the
essentials are not productivity but how you execute it and how you are able to
build on top of that applying the technologies that are being provided. It is crucial
for a lot of these struggling farmers to be able to keep up with technologies or even
be ahead of them before your competitor to stay in the business. Throughout this
paper we will gradually see that technology place a tremendous role on in agriculture
and food, especially as the population continues to grow so rapidly and food can
only be produced so fast, The first goal of agricultural development is to produce
sufficient food and other agricultural commodities to satisfy the needs and
preferences of the growing human population
52. Why Beowulf Is A Hero
While the initial judgments of the main character Beowulf were that he was seen as
the hero of the fictional epic poem Beowulf by an anonymous writer, this assertion
may be skewed with the information of the reasonings alluded by the narrator as to
why this character vanquished the monsters. The evidence of Beowulfshowing that
his actions of slaying the monsters were for the prominence of the title shows that
Beowulf cannot be portrayed as a true hero for he did not have the selfless
characteristics a warrior at this timeline would usually be seen possessing.
Throughout the poem, Beowulf is very set on being the hero for the Danes and his
people of Geatland. This first starts with the explanation of his battling with the sea
monsters beforehand. The explanation came about through his argument as to why
Beowulf can defeat the monster Grendel. I swam into the blackness of the night,
hunting monsters out of the ocean and killing them one by one; death was my
errand and the fate they had earned, (Beowulf ln 421 425). This explains how he had
killed the sea monsters all by himself and how then with this success he can kill
Grendel by himself without the help of Hrothgar s men. The narrator also alludes to
the fact that Beowulf may be stretching the truth about his victory in this battle
because there seemed to be no witnesses to this event. This raises the argument that
although Beowulf used this as an explanation supporting his claim of defeating
Grendel, the declare of

54. Anthrax (Bacillus Anthracis) Essay
Anthrax (Bacillus anthracis) is an acute infectious disease caused by the spore
forming bacterium. The most common victims of anthrax are warm blooded animals,
but it can also infect humans. Anthrax spores can be produced in a powdery form for
biological warfare. When inhaled by humans, these particles cause respiratory failure
and death within a week. Because anthraxis considered to be a potential agent for use
in biological warfare, the Department of Defense (DOD), in 1998, announced it
would begin a systematic vaccination of all U.S. militarypersonnel. (DOD, 1998)

Inhalation: Initial symptoms may resemble a common cold. After several days, the
symptoms may progress to severe breathing problems and shock. Inhalation anthrax
usually results in death in 1 2 days after onset of the acute symptoms.
Intestinal: The intestinal disease form of anthrax may follow ingestion of
contaminated meat and is characterized by an acute inflammation of the intestinal
tract. Nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting and fever are followed by abdominal pain,
vomiting of blood, and severe diarrhea. Intestinal anthrax results in death in 25% to
60% of cases. The incubation period is usually within seven days. There are no
reports of the disease spreading from human to human. Direct person to person
spread of anthrax most likely does not occur. Once a person has been infected with
anthrax and survived, a second bout with this disease is unlikely.
To treat anthrax, doctors can prescribe antibiotics. Usually penicillin based
antibiotics such as Cipro are preferred, but erythromycin, tetracycline, or
chloramphenicol can also be used. To be effective, treatment should be initiated
early. The disease could be fatal if left untreated. (Sofaer, et al, 1999)

55. Biblical Allusions In The Metamorphosis
What led to Gregor Samsa s tragic end? In the novel, The Metamorphosis by Franz
Kafka, published in 1915, a young man named Gregor Samsa wakes up one day,
only to find that he has gone through a very shocking physical transformation into a
human sized bug. Throughout The Metamorphosis, Gregor s family basically
disowns him, and he begins to feel like a burden to them, so he decides something
needs to change for them, and for him, death is the only option. One of the literary
elements in this novel is the incorporation of biblical allusions. The first example,
is when Gregor is hidden away and shunned by his family, this can be looked at as
a biblical reference to Gregor s situation, when Jesus is turned against by his
followers. The second, and most prominent example of biblical allusion is the role
that the apple plays in the plot. The apple can be interpreted as the same Biblical
fruit, from the tree of knowledge. Lastly, when Gregor cannot move from the pain
after an apple is wedged in his back, he states that he feels nailed in place (Kafka 52).
This is just like Jesus, and how he was nailed to the cross.
After Gregor s transformation, his family only sees him as a bug, they do not see
the Gregor who is a person, and a part of their family, anymore. Thus, his family
does not let Gregor come out of his room. The family does not know what to do
with him Gregor, and soon he is just seen as a burden to all of them. By the end of
The Metamorphosis, Gregor s family does not want anything to do with him because
he is a bug and Grete states, we must try to get rid of it (Kafka 68). Jesus, by
comparison, was driven away by his followers, just like Gregor was by his family. In
the Book of Luke 22:2 (NIV) it states, ... the teachers of the law were looking for
some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people . This Biblical
allusion of Jesus and Gregor both being pushed away by people close to them, is just
one of the three Biblical allusions in the novel.
The apple, another Biblical allusion, makes an appearance throughout The
Metamorphosis quite often. Its first presence in the novel is when Mr. Samsa, Gregor
s father, attempts to kill Gregor by chucking apples at him. Kafka states, at that
56. Markus Zusak
Markus Zusak was born in 1975 in Sydney, Australia. He is the youngest of four and
his parents are German and Austrian immigrants. His German mother and Austrian
father both experienced World War II in their homelands. Both of his parents couldn t
read or write English, but they wanted their children to learn the language at a young
age. Zusak started writing fictionat 16 and got a degree in teaching at the University
of Sydney. He worked as a house painter, a janitor, and a high school English
teacher before he became an author. Zusak s first book, The Underdog, was
published in 1999 after receiving many rejections. It was the first book in the Wolfe
Brothers trilogy. It was later followed by Fighting Ruben Wolfe, and then When Dogs
Cry.
