011.
One of the critical problems confronting management and the board of Pioneer Petroleum Corporation
in July 1991 was the determination of a minimum acceptable rate of return on new capital
investments. The company s basic capital budgeting approach was to accept all proposed investments
with a positive net present value when discounted at the appropriate cost of capital. At issue was how
the appropriate discount rate would be determined. The company was weighing two alternative
approaches for determining a minimum rate of return: (1) a single cutoff rate based on the company s

The market for MTBE had been growing, and the new regulations were expected to lead to even
higher growth. Also, Pioneer s SMOGMAN service centers specialized in state required smog checks

Weighted Average Cost of Capital
The company s weighted average cost of capital was calculated in three steps: first, the expected
future target proportions of debt and equity in the company s capital structure were estimated; second,
costs were assigned to each of these capital components; third, a weighted average cost of capital was
calculated on the basis of these proportions and costs (see Table A).

Pioneer s capital structure. A firm policy had been adopted that debt should represent approximately
50% of total capital (defined as total debt plus book equity) to balance the competing objectives of
enhancing the returns to shareholders and maintaining financial flexibility. The company was

Controversial Aspects of Decommissioning the Edwards Dam
Controversial Aspects of Decommissioning the Edwards Dam In 1991 the Edwards Manufacturing
Company, owner of the Edwards Dam on the Kennebec River in Augusta, ME, applied to the Federal
Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for a renewal of their license to operate a privately owned
hydroelectric dam. Their application was denied; Edwards Manufacturing Company was required to
come up with a plan for the enacting and financing of decommissioning the dam, as well as the
restoration of the river. This was the first time in history that the federal government ordered a
privately owned hydroelectric dam destroyed against the wishes of the owner. Numerous factors were
involved which eventually led to this decision, namely the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are a number of environmental advantages that would occur upon decommissioning the
Edwards Dam, most notably the rejuvenation of fish populations and the resulting increase in numbers
of the osprey and bald eagles which feed upon them. Historically, the Kennebec River provided
extensive top quality breeding grounds for all ten species of anadromous fish native to the
northeastern U.S., a distinction that the Kennebec River alone could boast of. Anadromous fish make
their home in the ocean but embark upon the tough journey upstream once a year to lay their eggs.
Since the erection of the Edwards Dam in 1837, and the subsequent construction of more than a
hundred dams upstream of the Edwards, these fish have been effectively blocked off from prime
spawning grounds. The removal of the dam would open up fifteen miles of these grounds, seventeen
miles total before encountering the next obstruction, making this the longest uninterrupted stretch of
high quality breeding grounds north of the Hudson River (Howe,1998). The possibility of freeing such
a considerable amount of breeding grounds had conservationists up in arms over the matter of
renewing the operation license of the Edwards Manufacturing

The Interpretation of Aboriginal Dreams
Introduction:
Typically to understand a foreign culture s ontology, ethnographers and anthropologist examine
aspects of the selected group s life such as researching into their methods of communication, religious
values, if any, and their orientation within the world. An alternative and more modern way of learning
ontological views of a culture is by taking a more interdisciplinary approach and looking towards
analyzing not just how they view aspects of the world but why. There is a cross between fields of
psychology and philosophy when anthropologists begin to analyze aboriginal conceptions of
Dreamings as a way to shed light onto their epistemology. Many studies have been done to signify the
importance of these Dreamings in the cultural shaping of their world. However, because emphasis is
focused on the distinction and differences between Aboriginal and Non indigenous models of dreams,
these two ideologies are often binary. After learning about the concept of Dreaming in philosophical,
psychological, and ethnographic terms through the course of 10 weeks I want to propose that
Aboriginal Dreamings are not so distance from the basis of non indigenous formation models of
dreams.
There is a large emphasis of the distinctions between Aboriginal Australians concept of the Dream
Time or Dreamings and the (Western) formulation of Dreams. This connection has caused interest
because of the similarities between names. Patrick Wolfe accredits the term Dreamings to come from

A Compare And Contrast Fats Research Paper
Compare and Contrast Fats Generally, the word shortening means any group of solid fats. Shortenings
generally consist of nearly 100 percent fat. It may be made from vegetable oils, animal fats, or both.
Shortenings are used for may purposes, so manufacturers have formulated various kinds of fats with
various properties. (Gisslen, 2013)
All Purpose Shortening
Also known as regular shortening, have a tough, waxy texture, and small particles of the fat tend to
hold their shape in a dough or batter. They are called plastic shortenings, which means they are
moldable at room temperature. They have a good creaming ability. Which means that a good quantity
of air can be mixed into them to give a batter lightness and leavening power. This type of shortening
melts only at a high temperature. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They are also used in many other pastries, breads, and products mixed by creaming, such as certain
pound cakes, cookies, and quick breads.
High Ratio Shortening
These are soft shortenings that spread easily throughout a batter and quickly coat the particles of sugar
and flour. The are call high ratio because they were devised for use in cake batter that contain a high
ratio of sugar and liquid to flour. They also contain added emulsifying agents, so they can hold a larger
quantity of liquid and sugar than regular shortenings. Which gives a smoother and finer texture to cake
and make them moister. Commonly referred to as emulsifying shortening.
High ratio shortening does not cream well. When a recipe calls for creaming shortening and sugar,
regular shortening should be used. High ratio shortening is often used in icings because it can hold
more sugar and liquid without curdling. It is more temperature stable and will hold air better upon
whipping, improving volume and stability.

Changing Voting Restrictions
Have you ever felt like the government is trying to take away your voice? Well if you allow them to
take away your right to vote with new restrictions on who can or can not vote then that is what they
are basically doing. It would be taking away the already small voice you have in your governmental
system. If they were to change the requirements then it would cause mass confusion of election day, it
would be erasing what some people fought for to earn the right to vote, and the voting rate is low
enough.
One of the main reasons why we should not change the voting restrictions it that it would cause mass
confusion when it came to election day. Election day is already heptic enough when it comes time for
the american people to vote for their next commander in chief. It would just add on to the craiz and
confusion if people went to go vote and was not allowed to because of a new type of restriction out
that they did not know of. For example, during the 2016 election between Hillary Clinton and Donald
Trump there were 14 different states that had new voting laws. One of the 14 states that changed their
voting laws was Connecticut. When election day came around people that were working the polls in
Connecticut was improperly insisting for voters to show photo ... Show more content on

1870 when congress finally passed the 15th amendment allowing any male can vote, but women were
not allowed to vote until the 1918 s. If we had more restrictions then it would be like we went back in
time when certain people did not have the right to vote. ( History of Voting Rights ) The last reason
why we should not have any more voting restrictions is because we already have a low voting rate as
it is. If we had any more requirements than the voting rate would be even

Principle Summary Of A Psychodynamic Approach
Principle Summary
The principle of order explains that if there is an action then there will either be a reaction or
consequence based on the results that we are expecting. In order to get effective outcomes when
working with families, children, and individuals I would have to consistently seek information to
ensure that I was giving them correct strategies and techniques to improve their family structure. The
principle of empathy expresses the need to understand certain situations form other s perspectives in
order to understand their reactions, emotions, and behaviors. This act will ensure that I am actually
understanding the reason behind the behavior based on the client/person instead of in my own opinion.
The principle of agency refers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The importance of taking different situations into context as a professional yet being open to change as
an individual is very refreshing because that shows that professionals are human as well. Working
with cases that are difficult to hear are more likely to be the most difficult times as a FLE worker
because I think the division between being professional and personal can be invisible at times. If these
principles are present in my field of work then this can help to make sure that I take these things into
context before attempting to help others.
Personal Biases
Personal biases that I am aware that I have are towards are towards privileges of others of different
races. This is a big hindrance for me because I understand that many people don t get the opportunity
to live up to their expectations but I still refer to facts about the rewards and lack of punishment that
are given to them. The most challenging individuals for me to work with would be sex offenders. In
my opinion they can be rehabilitated but the act in general would make it difficult for me to effectively
discuss their issues and the reasoning behind meeting with them.

Elizabeth Bishop s Icy Robe
The Bishop s Icy Robe
Part of a handful of women poets in the Modernist Era, Elizabeth Bishop wrote
around a hundred poems mostly containing dark themes which can be attributed to her
greatly compromised childhood. She has check mated the world of poetry and has
marked her name through her distinct style in poems such as A Death in Nova Scotia,
Sestina, and In the Waiting Room. The poem, Death in Nova Scotia, discusses a
young child coming to terms with her little cousins death and imagines what his afterlife
will be like. In Sestina, a grandmother and granddaughter shelter in a cold house while
the rain patters down on the roof. Clearly a greater, more omnipresent

They laugh at the clever almanac (18) with each other and this almanac
continuously pops up through out the poem. It almost symbolizes fate (that s why it s so
clever ), that looms over them constantly causing Bishop to live with her grandmother. So
in turn its safe to say that both speaker and Bishop are the same person because she is
living with the grandmother and holding back her true feelings. The speaker also
mentions that the house feels chilly (23) which can indicate that Bishop never felt
completely comfortable in her grandparents house and not her parents home (which no
longer existed). This poem parallels Bishops other poem Memories , and the reason for
that; the grand father kept telling the young child to be polite and almost submissive to
what he was saying because public appearance is important. So that thought transversely
relates to this because the speaker never cries (though she wants to). And lets the kettle s
small hard tears (14) (Hoff) Death in Nova Scotia , Sestina , and In the Waiting Room all have very
distinct topics but are linked by the theme of a larger force propelling the speaker

The Theory And Practice Of Understanding And Working With...
This essay is written to compare the person centred and cognitive behavioural counselling by outlining
both the theory and practice of understanding and working with fear and sadness. This will be done by
outlining the theory of the counselling relationships and the theory in practice. Psychology is equipped
with a wide variety of therapies, techniques and approaches based on different models and theories of
human behaviour and development. When it comes to counselling, it is useful to be armed with a
selection of tools, so that a counsellor s professional resource allows them to be flexible and to apply
different techniques based on the individual problems and situational needs of each client. But when it
comes to most of the counselling models that a practitioner decides to set as the foundation of their
work, both client centred approaches and cognitive behavioural therapy are equally popular and
widespread. Nevertheless, these theories have differences as similarities too. (180 words)
The client centred model, also sometimes referred to as person centred, was developed by Carl Rogers
around the middle of the twentieth century. Carl R. Rogers is known as the father of client centred
therapy. Throughout his career, he dedicated himself to humanistic psychology and is well known for
his theory of personality development. He began developing his humanistic concept while working
with abused children. Rogers attempted to change the world of psychotherapy when he boldly

The Causes Of The Earthquake
In the blink of an eye, everything can change. From a monstrous magnitude 9 earthquake, to a series
of terrorist attacks, to migrating from a third world country that is dangerous to live in, any experience
can transform a lifestyle forever. The earthquake that took place occurred in Fukushima, Japan in
March of 2011 took the lives of 15,894 people, as well as leaving 6,156 injured and 2,546 missing.
This monstrous disaster unleashed a raging tsunami that wiped out the east coast of Japan. The
tsunami initiated a nuclear disaster that released highly toxic wastes into the atmosphere, making it
dangerous for civilians to be outdoors. The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 were a series of
four coordinated attacks by the Islamic terrorist group al Qaeda that place in New York City and
Washington D.C. taking the lives of 2,996 people. The U.S. Mexico border has approximately more
than 7,000 deaths from people attempting to cross the border since 2000.
In the midst of the terror, one can learn lessons to last them a lifetime. The people who lived through
these events went through a series of obstacles, both mentally and physically. For all three of these
occurrences, there were a vast amount of family members lost, which is never an easy pill to swallow.
Nothing defeats the mental hardship of leaving one s grandmother behind in order to escape and
survive a tsunami. In the midst of these disasters, there were instances of both selfishness and
selflessness. From loss of

Grand Coulee Dam Essay
Background
Nearly 13,000 years ago, glaciers moved across the earth. In the Pacific Northwest they created many
rivers, including the Columbia. The rock that the Grand Coulee Dam was built on was carved out by
those glaciers creating a sturdy base of the dam. It is located in the rain shadow of the Cascade
Mountain Range in a shrub steppe grassland, which results in very little rainfall and high
temperatures. There have been many Native American tribes, including the Spokane, Sanpoli,
Nespelem, Lakes, Colville and many others that have lived along the Columbia River and have relied
on it for many of their day to day necessities (Columbia Basin Project 2015). On July 16, 1933

The tribal members are against the dam because it ruins their life style. The Native Americans use the
Columbia River as a source of food and a way of life. Moreover, the damming of the Columbia River
forced the Native Americans to resettle. The dam is an issue to them because they fish for salmon, an
anadromous fish and once they re through the dam, there is no way for them to come back up it to
spawn; this leads to the disappointed commercial fishermen. The environmentalists are upset because
the construction of the dam means there would be habitat loss and alteration of a variety of wildlife,
including plants. The taxpayers in the Northwest Region of the United States are the ones who paid
for the majority of the irrigation construction costs ( Columbia Basin Project 2015). Currently, there

Pros And Cons Of Providing Scotland s Independence
With the whole world watching Scotland take their chance to become independent, many were
shocked at Ireland s vote to reject this independence. With a 55% vote, Scotland has decided to stay a
part of the United Kingdom.
On September 18, 2014, Scotland held a vote to decide if they were to become an independent country
or continue being a part of the United Kingdom. The people have spoken, and they have spoken to
reject independence. This close poll has shocked many people around the world, including the people
who live in Scotland. But this poll brought a new realization of what the people were asking for and
what they wanted, and upset the ones that still wanted and voted for independence. Thus forming the
two perspectives: those who support independence for Scotland, and those whose who support the
rejection of independence.
Those in support of independence wanted to focus more on the needs of Scotland, and decisions that
would reflect more primarily on its priorities. The people feel by putting Scotland s priorities first, the

Augustus- Absolute Power By Any Means Necessary
With the death of Julius Caesar, Augustus became the leader of Julius great conquests, resources, and
soldiers. Immense power was his to seize. However, the power came at a cost. At the forefront of his
attention, Julius killers were still loose, sewing seeds of violent oppression to this authority. Combined
with this constant fear of revolt, the propaganda of Marc Antony and others further challenged his
right to rule. Therefore, for Augustus to command the absolute power bestowed upon him, he must
eliminate any threats by any means necessary. This took the form of massacre. The justification for
Augusts campaign against any threat came from propaganda spread against him and its potential to
undermine his rule. One of the primary methods of belittlement came in the form of slander against
his family name. No individual utilized this tactic more cunningly than Marc Antony. The first rumors
targeted the social position of his ancestors. Antony claimed Augustus paternal great grandfather was
only a freeman and his grandfather a money changer. On the maternal side, Antony publically spread
Augusts maternal great grandfather was a baker from Africa. Even though Suetonius dismisses the
Antony s rumor of money changing, many Romans followed Antony s strategy of humiliation
(including Cassius Parmensis). By undermining his family ties, Antony could unsettle the legitimacy
behind his rule. Since social position determined the cursus honorum, a successful tarnish could

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson
In Daresbury in 1832, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, or better know as Lewis Carroll was born. He grew
up with several younger siblings who he told stories to, one of those being Alice in Wonderland . This
beautifully written story is about a ten year old girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit s hole into a
colorful world full of mad characters called Wonderland. England in 1865 has become part of the
victorian time period and along with it came many traits that set it apart. Throughout the piece, Carroll
challenges many traits of England s society and turns them into something that made this story so
unforgettable. Victorian etiquette, education for children, government, and drugs are just some of the

At the very ending of the book, the King and Queen of Hearts make everyone attend court over the
case of the missing tarts. Alice thought everything seemed very official with the jury box that held all
of the jurors with their slates, and the king as the judge with his white wig on. Eventually, Alice
discovers that the jury is writing the words Stupid things on their slates, and one of them does not
even spell the word stupid correctly (130 Carroll). This continues on with the witnesses, but between
every break the king calls for the verdict of the jury. This does relate to the time period because it was
rumored that when it came to the court system in the 1800 s, the witnesses never really mattered to the
judge. This rumor was reflected onto the King of Heart s character. Throughout the court case, Alice
begins to openly announce her thoughts to the courtroom. She criticizes the queen s decision to make
the sentence before the verdict, Stuff and nonsense! The idea of having the sentence first! (146). It is
thought that the Queen of Hearts actually symbolizes a real queen of England. Queen Margaret of
Anjou ruled from 1445 to 1461, and then again from 1470 to 1471. She was married to King Henry
VII and she had a son named Edward. She fought for the house of Lancaster which has a red rose for
its family name (Margaret). This does connect to the Queen of Hearts when her servants had to paint
the roses red. Why, the fact is, you see, Miss, this here ought to have been a red rose tree, and we put a
white one in by mistake; and, it the Queen was to find it out, we should all have our heads cut off, you
know. (90). The white roses were the symbol for the house of York, these two houses fought for the
right to the English throne in the War of the Roses. In the end of Queen Margaret s reign, her son was
killed by getting his head cut off, which is

STI Essay
Adults and teens alike know the possible risks of sexual content, yet it is still a growing problem. Any
sexual contact without proper prevention can put us at risk of an STI. This is part of the reason why
that there are twenty million new cases of STIs every year. In 2015, it was discovered that teens ages
thirteen to twenty four account for over twenty three percent of all HIV cases in the US. According to
the CDC, half of all STI cases are from teens. Even with sharing a water bottle STIs can spread from
person to person. Some STIs are incurable, while others can be cured with a doctor s help. All people

Meanwhile, fifteen point seven percent of teens aged fourteen to nineteen have HSV 2. This strain
causes mild skin irritations or painful lesions. When herpes spreads to the genitals, it is known as
genital herpes. One can be infected in the genitals with both forms of herpes in the genitals. This
infection has always been extremely common, and is usually not noticeable.
Technological advances have allowed some STIs to become curable. Gonorrhea is one of these.
Gonorrhea is a bacteria that infects different membranes in the genital area. Some are the urinary tract
and cervix. It can also possibly infect the eyes and throat. The CDC shows that around five hundred
and fifty thousand new Gonorrhea cases in the United States were from people aged fifteen to twenty
four in 2016. To spread Gonorrhea, ejaculation does not need to occur. It causes genital pain and
abnormally colored discharge. These symptoms aren t why Gonorrhea can be dangerous. In women, if
spread to the fallopian tubes, Gonorrhea can cause PID, which causes pain. PID, if untreated, could
lead to permanent infertility. In rare cases, Gonorrhea can also affect a man s fertility. If a pregnant
women has it, she can pass it on to the child. To cure it, the CDC recommends a mix of two different
medicines. This treatment plan can get rid of the disease, but cannot replace damaged body parts.
Some Gonorrhoeae strains are what is known as antimicrobial resistant.

Discrimination Is A Problem Since The Beginning Of Time
Discrimination has been a problem since the beginning of time. Discrimination is mentioned in many
pieces of classical literature such as Shakespeare s Othello. In this classical play the main character
Othello is never truly accepted into the Venetian society because he is a Moor from Northern Africa.
His skin color caused people to view him differently and also presented problems when he tried to
find a wife. After he eventually found and married Desdemona her father Brabantio still did not
approve of him; he said She, in spite of nature, Of years, of country, credit, everything, To fall in love
with what she feared to look on! It is a judgment maimed and most imperfect That will confess
perfection so could err Against all rules of nature (Act I, Scene 3). Brabantio saw this love as
unnatural because he believes Desdemona would never fall in love with a black man who she was
afraid to look upon. Before Othello married Desdemona Brabantio saw him as an honorable leader
and great man, but after their marriage he accuses him of black magic and urges their marriage to be
annulled by the Duke. This discrimination led to Othello s doubt and self conscience attitude which,
ultimately leads to his demise at the end of the play. Discrimination continues to exist today as it did
400 years ago in Shakespeare s time. Today people are still discriminated against and persecuted
because of their race or their religious views. The problem of racial discrimination was increasingly

Analyzing Two Forms Of Media
Analysing Two Forms of Media
First impressions are extremely vital. We form an opinion within the first 30 seconds of meeting
someone and that plays a vital role in the relationships formed. Similarly with films, the audiences
usually identifies with the genre within a few minutes of the screening. With that in mind, this analysis
will focus upon decoding the opening sequence of two contrasting films in order to understand its tone
and genre. In this case, the opening sequence is defined as the point until which the title is established,
this is usually within the first 120 to 180 seconds of the film. I have chosen to compare the mise en
scène of a modern day romantic comedy, What If (Michael Dowse, 2014) versus the classic horror
film, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This establishes the tone of the film as energetic and gives the audience the impression that the
narrative and characters are light hearted. Furthermore, the movie begins at night which suggests a
sense of romance, which is a central theme of the film. However, in The Shining , the camera follows
a single yellow car through a changing scenery of mountains and landscapes. From the wideness of
the shots, we see the environment as desolated and lonely. The audience is aware that there is no sign
of life apart from the driver of the car. This hints that isolation will be an important theme of the film.
It also establishes the driver as the central character of the film. Thomas Caldwell describes framing as
a way of withholding information from the audience (Caldwell, 2005). Although conversely, it is also
a way of including an image or object within a frame to convey a specific meaning. In What If shots
of the Toronto skyline are frequently shown throughout the film, usually in the background or out of
focus, to reinforce the idea established in the beginning that the city is another character in the film.
Similarly, In The Shining the hotel is where the entire narrative unfolds. Hence, it is imperative to
focus on the location at the beginning of the film itself.
The opening scene of What If is set at night but this is not to imply that the lighting is or dark but that
it is sultry, playful and romantic. The accompanying music which

Humanity of the Primitive in Heart of Darkness, Dialect of Modernism and Totem and Taboo
The ways in which a society might define itself are almost always negative ways. We are not X. A
society cannot exist in a vacuum; for it to be distinct it must be able to define itself in terms of the
other groups around it. These definitions must necessarily take place at points of cultural contact, the
places at which two societies come together and arrive at some stalemate of coexistence. For
European culture of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries this place of contact this new
culture by which to define itself came from Africa, from those primitive cultures whose society was
being studied and in some ways appreciated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The European mind at the fringes of civilisation, when confronted with this Otherness, cannot settle
on one or the other of these alternatives. European reactions to other cultures tend to oscillate between
these two poles, and thus the same culture can seem simple, authentic, concrete, or, on the other hand,
odd, uncanny, and arbitrary (ibid.). While this paradigm of shifting viewpoints is exemplified by
Marlow in Joseph Conrad s Heart of Darkness, it seems to find its resolution in Sigmund Freud s
assertion that in many ways the modern man is the primitive man.
Marlow s oscillation between viewpoints is almost startling in its rapidity. On his very first meeting
with the natives of the Congo, he swings from one pole to the other in only a few sentences:
They shouted, sang; their bodies streamed with perspiration; they had faces like grotesque masks these
chaps; but they had bone, muscle, a wild vitality, an intense energy of movement that was as natural
and true as the surf along the coast. They wanted no excuse for being there. They were a great comfort
to look at. (Conrad, 17)
So in the space of three sentences, the natives go from being grotesque masks to chaps who were as
natural and true as the surf along the coast. Marlow is having a great deal of trouble making up his
mind over the Africans, and he never really comes to any conclusion.
While he is staying in the down river station, Marlow

Second tendon problem that occurs invariably with athletic activity, especially when starting is
tendinosis.
It has to do simply with normal growth of tendons in the body, when they are subjected to increased

A normal process, but nonetheless painful.
How is that?
Think about growing pains in children.
If you have children or younger brothers and sisters, you know they all complain from pain, usually in
the lower extremities, during maximal growth, especially during early adolescence.
Tendons subjected to bigger loads than usual, grow in a similar way.
How does this problem manifest itself?
Deep pain, or discomfort in tendons or fasciae (Flat tendon structures).
Painful limitation of movements even is frequently associated.
So if such pain occurs after you increased tremendously your maximal load, then you don t need to
bother!
It s normal.
Sometimes, it lasts for one whole year or even 18 months.
This is again not abnormal.

Negative Effects Of The Cuban Embargo
Throughout history sovereignty has been known to be at the mercy of a nation s ruler, king, or

unconditionally belong to the people to freely determine their own destiny. For 58 years Cuba s
sovereignty has been firm, yet respected. A diverse nation and people, yet divided, where equal rights

their characteristics through illustration . Democractic The word democratic is derived from the word

The Bill of Rights was written by James Madison and was ratified in December 15, 1791. The Bill of
Rights was created because the colonies didn t want a constitution without a Bill of Rights because
they were afraid that the government would become too powerful and they would not have rights. In
June 8, 1789, James Madison proposed the Bill of Rights to the House of Representatives and they

amendments. After congress ratified the amendments they sent it to the colonies so they could ratify

birds, frogs, fish, squirrels and porcupines. Having personified animals is a trait of many fantasy
stories. It also has a clear protagonist and antagonist, the protagonist being Little Rabbit and the
antagonist being the Terrible Things. Also, the author s diction and syntax are simple and the names
that she chooses for the characters are very childlike, for example the Terrible Things. She uses
imagery to add dimension to a simple story like when she uses shimmering fish and the cool brown
waters of the forest pond. Little Rabbit. The author uses this to develop the setting and also appeal to
the reader s emotion of happiness and serenity which makes the plot more dramatic. The sentences are

_The Effects of Monetary Policy on the Economy_
Policy is implemented by raising and lowering the interest rate, affecting the demand for goods and
services from consumers and businesses alike. There are two types interest rates, real rate of interest
and the nominal rate of interest. According to McConnell and Brue, p.146, The real interest rate is the
percentage increase in purchasing power that the borrower pays the lender. The nominal interest rate is
the percentage increase in money that the borrower pays the lender, including that resulting from the
built in expectation of inflation, if any. The interest rate affects both consumers and businesses
demand for goods and services. The consumers demand is affected by changes in real interest rates. If
this rate is increased, it alters the costs of borrowing on credit, banks availability to loan money,
household incomes, and foreign exchange rates. If real interest rates are lowered,

Saki s Stories and the Impression they Create about Adult Child Relationships
In order to answer this question I am going to be focusing on three of

Children at the time Hector Munro (Saki) was writing these stories would have had very vivid
imagination; this is shown in Saki s story
The Open Window when the niece makes up the saga of Mr Sappleton s death, illustrates how
imaginative children can be, and that adults are very easily fooled. Fooling adults is a key theme in
Saki s stories; another time when it occurs is in the story The Lumber Room when Nicholas dupes his

This is shown in Saki?s story
?The Open Window? when the Mr Nuttel believes the nieces story because he has no reason to think
that a fifteen year old girl has any reason to lie, especially about something as horrible as death. Again
these also relates to the theme of children being able to fool adults, because they are seen as innocent.
I am now going to write about the characters in Saki?s stories. Each story contains an Aunt, who is
perceived a strict and a person who follows the rules of Edwardian society very closely, and children,
who tend to break the regulations that Edwardian society has, and by some other characters, like the
Batchelor in the story ?The Story Teller? and Mr Nuttel in the story ?The Open Window?
Firstly I am going to concentrate on the Bachelor in ?The
Story Teller?. He is different to the rest of the adults in the early stories because he tells the children a
story about a young girl is
?horribly good?. The concept of someone been horribly good is alien to
Edwardian society. Furthermore in the same story he also mentions that the girl who is ?horribly
good? gets killed by a wolf. This is another idea that would not have been thought possible to happen
in Edwardian society, because they believed that you can never be too good. Saki has invented the
character of the Bachelor in order to help him to ridicule Edwardian society. An example of the
Bachelor ridiculing

Newton s 2nd Law: the Law of Proportionality
The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the net force and inversely proportional to its
mass.
This is more readily expressed mathematically:
Here, F = the force on the object (in units of Newtons), m = the object s mass (in kilograms), and a =
the resulting acceleration (in units of meters per second per second, or meters/second2).
Key points: 1. A force that results in an object accelerating is an unbalanced (or net) force. 2. The
acceleration is always in the direction of the net force.

Force: a push or a pull on an object
Mass: a measure of the amount of material in an object; a quantitative measure of

Essay Question: What was an influence for Brahms Composition? Examine.
Johannes Brahms was one of the 19th century s greatest composers and one of the leading musicians
of the Romantic era. Brahms, together with Ludwig Van Beethoven and Johann Sebastian Bach, was
considered one of the Three B s of German music. This shows Brahms significance in German music,
as he is one of the symbols of German music. Not only did Brahms compose German music, but he
also composed Hungarian music. This is thought provoking because it was unusual for a German to
compose Hungarian music as well. This essay will be discussing what made Brahms compose
Hungarian gypsy music. Also, Zigeunerlieder Op.103, one of Brahms pieces that contain the
Hungarian gypsy element will be examined.
Born on the 7th of May 1833 in Hamburg, Johannes Brahms was the second child born into the

however they wanted, in their own ways. They usually played in bands, and most gypsy bands had an
interesting combination of instruments, two violins, a double bass, and the cimbalom, a large
Hungarian dulcimer. Interestingly at times, the bands would add in a clarinet or another woodwind

can do the most harm. The weather in King Lear tends to reflect on a characters emotions, mostly Lear
himself. As the betrayal of his daughters starts being noticed by Lear at the end of act 2, it is noted that
a storm is brewing. The storm that is brewing is his rage and sadness towards his two daughters
Goneril and Regan. The first line of act 3 begins who s there, besides foul weather? speaking of the
wicked situations that are slowly being seen in the kingdom. As the storm nears the kingdom more
immoral actions are done by the characters, such as Edmund s plot to deceive his father. Scene 2

The Assigned Portrait By Anthony Van Dyck
The assigned portrait is a work by Anthony van Dyck that dates back to 1621, presumably finished
before the artist left his native city of Antwerp for Italy (Genua). From the title, we gather that Van
Dyck is depicting a family of three. The father is sat on the right, while the mother is sat on the left;
they are both facing the viewer. Their young child is positioned on the mother s lap, its head turned
towards the father. The colour scheme includes rich, dark colours for the attire of the couple, a vibrant
red colour for the drapery behind the mother and similar shades of dark green for the mother s skirt,
the child s skirt and the velvet fabric on the furniture approximate to the child s skirt. Additionally, the
inset of the mother s dress ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The bear little resemblance to other depictions of Wildens, whose satyr like characteristics and sharp
glance are considered distinctive. However, the features of the father in our case study look oddly
familiar. That is because they are much more similar to the characteristics of the father in the portrait
The Family of Cornelis de Vos (1584/5 1651), also by Van Dyck. In addition to the facial features, Van
Dyck diligently portrayed the fine lace ruff and sleeves of the man s attire and the tightly starched ruff
of the woman (The State Hermitage Museum, Family Portrait ) in both portraits, pairing those with
delicate hand gestures, present in both paintings. To boot, Van Dyck used the same landscape art as a
background for the father s head and the same deep red coloured blinds behind the mother. The colour
schemes and even the golden button details and the wooden handle on the furniture where the mother
is sat are alike, too. Given these similarities (and the fact that de Vos painted a portrait of his own
family during the same period), it might be possible that the family in the portrait is actually that of
Cornelis de Vos. (Dickinson, Sir Anthony Van Dyck ) Since we know that Magdalena, the youngest
daughter of de Vos was born in 1619, it is possible that the family portrait below was painted in 1620
and our case study was actually painted

An Inconvenient Truth
You look at that river gently flowing by. You notice the leaves rustling with the wind. You hear the
birds; you hear the tree frogs. In the distance you hear a cow. You feel the grass. The mud gives a little
bit on the river bank. It s quiet; it s peaceful. And all of a sudden, it s a gear shift inside you. And it s
like taking a deep breath and going, Oh yeah, I forgot about this. Al Gore, An Inconvenient Truth
Inconvenient Truth You see that pale, blue dot? That s us. Everything that has ever happened in all of

But that article was published in Newsweek and never appeared in a peer reviewed journal
(Inconvenient Truth). This shows that there are people who are deliberately trying to mislead the
public through false publications. The economical and political factors that are affecting this issue are
the costs this is going to have on large companies. The truth about global warming is especially
inconvenient and unwelcome to some powerful people and companies making enormous sums of
money from activities they know full well will have to change in order to ensure the planet s livability
(Inconvenient Truth). If market capitalism can be made an ally of environmentalism, then businesses
will keep track of all the economic decisions made, whether they have good or bad consequences. The
most interesting thing I found about this film was the speed of which global warming is occurring. I
always thought it would happen at a much slower pace than it actually is. The most surprising part
about the film was when he talked about how the extinction rate today is 100 to 1000 times higher
than it should be. The most poignant scenes were the ones showing the glaciers melting and the one
showing the present day and projected carbon dioxide levels. The glacier scene showed pictures of
glaciers 30 years ago progressing up to today. There was a drastic difference in the size of the glaciers
and some were almost gone completely. The scene showing the CO2 levels was

Summary Of Killings By Andre Dubus
In the short story Killings the author, Andre Dubus writes about two different killings allowing the
reader to determine the justification of each killing. Focusing on the main character Matt Fowler, the
reader learns that Matt has good morals, which are overtaken by the death of his son. As the story
progresses, Dubus shows the motivation behind Matt s anger and revenge. Which leads Matt to a
controversy over following his head or his heart. All of these aspects give the reader obvious
conclusions that Matt will not follow through with his plan, making it even more surprising when he
does. At the beginning of the story Matt reveals his anger to his friend and the reader can see him
struggle to cope with the death of his son. The manner in which he killed Richard Strout showed the
anger and hatred he had against him. He was desperate to find justice for the crime committed against
his family. He wanted to make Strout feel all of the pain, the sorrow, and the hurt that he had put them
through. The night of Strout s murder, Matt does not look him in the eyes and makes Strout distance
himself from Matt. He wanted to kill a faceless person and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Shades Of Grey
Fifty Shades of Grey was undoubtedly one of the most anticipated movies of 2015. When the movie
was finally released, audiences all over the world were overwhelmed and they flocked cinemas that
showed it to watch it. Although, it was banned in some countries, this did not stop it from having
massive impact when it came to the soundtracks from the movie. The most outstanding song was
Earned it by The Weeknd. Now, this song has an enormously great remix by one of our generation s
greatest sex symbols, Trey Songz. I prefer to call this one, Fifty Shades of Trey, I think it has a
creatively nice ring to it. Trey Songz has some of my best remixes to other artist s songs, he has a lot
of them and you can t help loving them. He takes the songs, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

You must have unmovable faith in your voice and its ability to pull off such a recreation. Anything
short of as good as his or better will have you judged in the most embarrassing ways ever. The
Weeknd has one of the most unique and impossible to beat vocals in the industry. But this is not a
challenge to Trey, he steps up to it and he takes the challenge and he conquers. Every bit of this song
is as captivating as the original. Some will even be inclined to say that it s even better. Personally I
think they are both incredible and picking a favorite is impossible. Trey Songz brings the exceptional
factors about his vocals and he lets them take the lead on this one. Where the pitch must be high, it is
perfectly elevated, when it must be calm, he contains it and everything is beautiful. There is a playful
and teasing element whenever Trey sings about making love and sex and you will feel it on Earned it
(remix). Trey Songz sure knows how to get his ladies worked up. He knows how to find a way to their
hearts and to their other places. Earned it (remix) I can predict has found and is still finding its way to
a massive number of bedroom playlists. Trey Songz has that

Informative Essay On Radiation
I have found that radiation can either be very helpful or very dangerous, this all depends on the
amount and how it s used. The definition of radiation is the process by which energy is emitted as
either particles or waves(mirion 2010).Radiation is measured in waves or curies. Curies is named after
one of the radiation founders Marie Curie. Radiation was discovered by many different people.
Radiation is used in many helpful ways such as medical and home use. It can also used to kill bacteria
and parasites in food to make them last longer.
Henri Becquerel was the scientist that discovered radioactivity in 1896. Becquerel found radioactivity
when he was experimenting with x rays on a cloudy day in Paris. He found radioactivity without ...

By using radiation you can kill bacteria and parasites in food. If they parasites and bacteria weren t
killed they would cause food borne illnesses. By killing these germs you extend the freshness and
quality of food. One example of using irradiation is the pasteurization of milk. Some may believe that
doing this may cause the food to become radioactive or unsafe. You many also think that using
irradiation could cause the nutritional value to decrease or become lesser. Many studies have been
done to prove that irradiation has no effect on the food itself. Along with it having no effect on the
food it has no effect on the person or animal consuming the treated

Atrial Fibrillation
The heart is a complex yet delicate organ that operates the body on a regular basis. Without the heart
the circulation system within the body would cease to exist; therefore, we would cease to exist. As
with everything that is complex and works around the clock there are certain issues that can arise for
example, atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation is the result of an irregular or fast heartbeat this will often
cause an inadequate circulation throughout the rest of the body. The atrium of the heart will not sync
up to the ventricles causing an irregular or fast heartbeat.
The episodes of atrial fibrillation can come and go or remain permanently and cannot usually be
corrected without surgical intervention. This could be caused by hypertension, ... Show more content

His work led to the evolution of radiofrequency energy catheters, which use radiofrequency energy to
heat the catheter tip and perform a more precise ablation than what was possible with direct current
ablation. (UCSF.(2012). When cardiac ablation is performed the surgeon is targeting the diseased
conductive tissue once this is done, this will assist in correcting atrial fibrillation within the heart.
These surgeries can be either minimally invasive or require an open surgical approach. Cardiac
ablation is achieved through a cardiac catheter this delivers radiofrequency energy or cryoenergy to
the defective area this is considered to be a minimally invasive approach. The electrophysiologist will
insert a catheter into the femoral vein/artery and threads it to the right or left atrium and ventricle.
They will then test different areas of the heart to try and reproduce dysrhythmia upon doing this they
will then ablate the area of the heart where the disturbance takes place. Another alternative would be
an open surgery known as a sternotomy approach this is where a midline incision is made in the
sternum of the chest. Cannulation of the superior and inferior vena cava will then take place for a
cardiopulmonary bypass. The surgeon will occlude the ascending aorta and infuse cardioplegic
solution into the coronary arteries. Once this is done a right and left atriotomy is performed and the
targets are ablated. The atriotomies are closed, the aorta is unclamped, cardiopulmonary bypass is
stopped, cannulas are removed, chest tubes will be inserted at this time and the surgical wound is
closed. Upon completion of the surgery the patient is taken to the PACU and monitored for heart
rhythm issues as well as, bleeding, infection, or any other complications from the procedure. ( Fuller,

Sustainable Agriculture Vs. Traditional Agriculture
Hey today I will be talking about why I choose sustainable Agriculture and go against Traditional
Agriculture. First I ll give you the definition or what traditional and sustainable agriculture
are.Traditional Agriculture is an old fashion way of agriculture. Sustainable Agriculture is a newer
way. Also the definition for Agriculture: is a way of farming and practicing a way of producing wool
or food. The reason that I choose Sustainable is because it doesn t damage a lot like traditional
agriculture does. But that s my personal opinion. I will tell you why I think Sustainable is better and
what advantages it has.
A way that Traditional agriculture damages the environment is by killing the topsoil and subsoil. Also
it kills pest that are not harmful for the crops. An example would be ladybugs who are affected when
the pesticide from the plants runoff and go to the ladybugs habitat and get on their food and that s how
traditional affects them. Also traditional agriculture uses a lot of chemicals. It also affects different
species of birds. It is also harder to harvest than sustainable. It can even affect us, when the level is
high on the plants the higher is the chance of getting ill , like cancer. So people who live close to these
farm lands that use traditional agriculture have a chance of having cancer going through their family
generations.
Now sustainable has more advantages. Some advantages that it has is that it produces healthy crops.
Other advantages that it

College Degree In College
Did you know, high school graduates with no college degree make nearly $530 a week less than those
with a Bachelor s degree? (BLS, 2016). Continuing your education not only means making more
money, but it provides you with better opportunities in your general life. Although college can be
expensive and stressful, it is rewarding. Spending an additional 2 4 years in college will make the rest
of your life much better than without it. Nelson Mandela once said Education is the most powerful
weapon which you can use to change the world ( BrainyQuotes, n.d. ), and I agree. With knowledge,
anything is possible for you to achieve. The more education you have, the more opportunities will find
you. I want my children to further their education past high school, whether it will be a college degree
or a certificate from a technical school. My mother went back to school in her 30 s so that we could
have a better life and not have to continue living in poverty. She quit her job at the time and went to
college fulltime to become a Registered Nurse. It wasn t always easy while she was in school, money
was even tighter than before, but once she graduated, things changed. We finally had financial stability
and structure we always wanted. Seeing my mother set a goal and work hard until she achieved it,
inspired me even at a young age. I knew I wanted to go to college so I could provide for my family
like she had for me. So I set my goal and I have almost achieve it. I will be getting a

John Berger Essay- Ways of Seeing
While in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, I traveled through the different galleries and their
various cultures; discovering all sorts of arts from Contemporary art, to American art, Japanese art,
and even the Egyptian art where I could appreciate the complexity of mummies. Throughout all these
diverse cultures of art, I was questioning myself and started to wonder how I could understand art
beyond others opinion about them. Moreover, I realized that it was a question John Berger, critic of art
and author of the Ways of Seeing, raised in his essay, and it is a question that will always be raised
while demanding how to understand a certain art. Walking through a room where various French
artists had their paintings exposed, I fell in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Indeed, mystification appeared while I was looking at the painting. I could sense a certain limit of my
understanding due to the previous art classes I had. In other terms, it meant for me that words were
coming before seeing whereas seeing should come before words as Berger deciphered in his essay. My
mind was already set for a certain critic about the painting based on the knowledge I had;
Consequently, I could not have another point of view vis à vis the painting I was staring at. Although I
learned a lot from my art classes, especially how to describe an artwork contextually, the observations
and point of view of Berger about art gave me enough elements to have a complete analysis of an
image, both contextually and historically. Using Berger as a guide for art description helped me to
learn more about the painting historically, and much more about the painter himself to have a
complete understanding of the artwork. Prior to this assignment, it had never occurred to me to use the
biography and the background of the painter in order to facilitate my understanding of the painting.
When Berger quoted When we see a landscape, we situate ourselves in the it. If we saw the art of the
past, we would situate ourselves in history. (100) in the essay led me to start the analysis of Gauguin s
painting in a very different way. Actually, when I focused more on the

Harvard Business School Case 292 011. One of the critical problems confronting management and the board of Pioneer Petroleum Corporation in July 1991 was the determination of a minimum acceptable rate of return on new capital investments. The company s basic capital budgeting approach was to accept all proposed investments with a positive net present value when discounted at the appropriate cost of capital. At issue was how the appropriate discount rate would be determined. The company was weighing two alternative approaches for determining a minimum rate of return: (1) a single cutoff rate based on the company s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Controversial Aspects of Decommissioning the Edwards Dam Controversial Aspects of Decommissioning the Edwards Dam In 1991 the Edwards Manufacturing Company, owner of the Edwards Dam on the Kennebec River in Augusta, ME, applied to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for a renewal of their license to operate a privately owned hydroelectric dam. Their application was denied; Edwards Manufacturing Company was required to come up with a plan for the enacting and financing of decommissioning the dam, as well as the restoration of the river. This was the first time in history that the federal government ordered a privately owned hydroelectric dam destroyed against the wishes of the owner. Numerous factors were involved which eventually led to this decision, namely the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are a number of environmental advantages that would occur upon decommissioning the Edwards Dam, most notably the rejuvenation of fish populations and the resulting increase in numbers of the osprey and bald eagles which feed upon them. Historically, the Kennebec River provided extensive top quality breeding grounds for all ten species of anadromous fish native to the northeastern U.S., a distinction that the Kennebec River alone could boast of. Anadromous fish make their home in the ocean but embark upon the tough journey upstream once a year to lay their eggs. Since the erection of the Edwards Dam in 1837, and the subsequent construction of more than a hundred dams upstream of the Edwards, these fish have been effectively blocked off from prime spawning grounds. The removal of the dam would open up fifteen miles of these grounds, seventeen miles total before encountering the next obstruction, making this the longest uninterrupted stretch of high quality breeding grounds north of the Hudson River (Howe,1998). The possibility of freeing such a considerable amount of breeding grounds had conservationists up in arms over the matter of renewing the operation license of the Edwards Manufacturing ... • 5. The Interpretation of Aboriginal Dreams Introduction: Typically to understand a foreign culture s ontology, ethnographers and anthropologist examine aspects of the selected group s life such as researching into their methods of communication, religious values, if any, and their orientation within the world. An alternative and more modern way of learning ontological views of a culture is by taking a more interdisciplinary approach and looking towards analyzing not just how they view aspects of the world but why. There is a cross between fields of psychology and philosophy when anthropologists begin to analyze aboriginal conceptions of Dreamings as a way to shed light onto their epistemology. Many studies have been done to signify the importance of these Dreamings in the cultural shaping of their world. However, because emphasis is focused on the distinction and differences between Aboriginal and Non indigenous models of dreams, these two ideologies are often binary. After learning about the concept of Dreaming in philosophical, psychological, and ethnographic terms through the course of 10 weeks I want to propose that Aboriginal Dreamings are not so distance from the basis of non indigenous formation models of dreams. There is a large emphasis of the distinctions between Aboriginal Australians concept of the Dream Time or Dreamings and the (Western) formulation of Dreams. This connection has caused interest because of the similarities between names. Patrick Wolfe accredits the term Dreamings to come from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It may be made from vegetable oils, animal fats, or both. Shortenings are used for may purposes, so manufacturers have formulated various kinds of fats with various properties. They are called plastic shortenings, which means they are moldable at room temperature. They have a good creaming ability. Which means that a good quantity of air can be mixed into them to give a batter lightness and leavening power. This type of shortening melts only at a high temperature. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They are also used in many other pastries, breads, and products mixed by creaming, such as certain pound cakes, cookies, and quick breads. High Ratio Shortening These are soft shortenings that spread easily throughout a batter and quickly coat the particles of sugar and flour. The are call high ratio because they were devised for use in cake batter that contain a high ratio of sugar and liquid to flour. They also contain added emulsifying agents, so they can hold a larger quantity of liquid and sugar than regular shortenings. Which gives a smoother and finer texture to cake and make them moister. Commonly referred to as emulsifying shortening. High ratio shortening does not cream well. When a recipe calls for creaming shortening and sugar, regular shortening should be used. High ratio shortening is often used in icings because it can hold more sugar and liquid without curdling. It is more temperature stable and will hold air better upon whipping, improving volume and stability. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Changing Voting Restrictions Have you ever felt like the government is trying to take away your voice? Well if you allow them to take away your right to vote with new restrictions on who can or can not vote then that is what they are basically doing. It would be taking away the already small voice you have in your governmental system. If they were to change the requirements then it would cause mass confusion of election day, it would be erasing what some people fought for to earn the right to vote, and the voting rate is low enough. One of the main reasons why we should not change the voting restrictions it that it would cause mass confusion when it came to election day. Election day is already heptic enough when it comes time for the american people to vote for their next commander in chief. It would just add on to the craiz and confusion if people went to go vote and was not allowed to because of a new type of restriction out that they did not know of. For example, during the 2016 election between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump there were 14 different states that had new voting laws. If we had more restrictions then it would be like we went back in time when certain people did not have the right to vote. The poem, Death in Nova Scotia, discusses a young child coming to terms with her little cousins death and imagines what his afterlife will be like. This essay is written to compare the person centred and cognitive behavioural counselling by outlining both the theory and practice of understanding and working with fear and sadness. This will be done by outlining the theory of the counselling relationships and the theory in practice. Psychology is equipped with a wide variety of therapies, techniques and approaches based on different models and theories of human behaviour and development. When it comes to counselling, it is useful to be armed with a selection of tools, so that a counsellor s professional resource allows them to be flexible and to apply different techniques based on the individual problems and situational needs of each client. But when it comes to most of the counselling models that a practitioner decides to set as the foundation of their work, both client centred approaches and cognitive behavioural therapy are equally popular and widespread. Nevertheless, these theories have differences as similarities too. (180 words) The client centred model, also sometimes referred to as person centred, was developed by Carl Rogers around the middle of the twentieth century. Carl R. From a monstrous magnitude 9 earthquake, to a series of terrorist attacks, to migrating from a third world country that is dangerous to live in, any experience can transform a lifestyle forever. The earthquake that took place occurred in Fukushima, Japan in March of 2011 took the lives of 15,894 people, as well as leaving 6,156 injured and 2,546 missing. This monstrous disaster unleashed a raging tsunami that wiped out the east coast of Japan. The tsunami initiated a nuclear disaster that released highly toxic wastes into the atmosphere, making it dangerous for civilians to be outdoors. With a 55% vote, Scotland has decided to stay a part of the United Kingdom. On September 18, 2014, Scotland held a vote to decide if they were to become an independent country or continue being a part of the United Kingdom. The people have spoken, and they have spoken to reject independence. This close poll has shocked many people around the world, including the people who live in Scotland. But this poll brought a new realization of what the people were asking for and what they wanted, and upset the ones that still wanted and voted for independence. Thus forming the two perspectives: those who support independence for Scotland, and those whose who support the rejection of independence. Those in support of independence wanted to focus more on the needs of Scotland, and decisions that would reflect more primarily on its priorities. • 17. Augustus- Absolute Power By Any Means Necessary With the death of Julius Caesar, Augustus became the leader of Julius great conquests, resources, and soldiers. Immense power was his to seize. However, the power came at a cost. At the forefront of his attention, Julius killers were still loose, sewing seeds of violent oppression to this authority. Combined with this constant fear of revolt, the propaganda of Marc Antony and others further challenged his right to rule. Therefore, for Augustus to command the absolute power bestowed upon him, he must eliminate any threats by any means necessary. This took the form of massacre. The justification for Augusts campaign against any threat came from propaganda spread against him and its potential to undermine his rule. One of the primary methods of belittlement came in the form of slander against his family name. No individual utilized this tactic more cunningly than Marc Antony. The first rumors targeted the social position of his ancestors. Antony claimed Augustus paternal great grandfather was only a freeman and his grandfather a money changer. On the maternal side, Antony publically spread Augusts maternal great grandfather was a baker from Africa. Even though Suetonius dismisses the Antony s rumor of money changing, many Romans followed Antony s strategy of humiliation (including Cassius Parmensis). By undermining his family ties, Antony could unsettle the legitimacy behind his rule. Since social position determined the cursus honorum, a successful tarnish could ... Eventually, Alice discovers that the jury is writing the words Stupid things on their slates, and one of them does not even spell the word stupid correctly (130 Carroll). This continues on with the witnesses, but between every break the king calls for the verdict of the jury. This does relate to the time period because it was rumored that when it came to the court system in the 1800 s, the witnesses never really mattered to the judge. This rumor was reflected onto the King of Heart s character. Throughout the court case, Alice begins to openly announce her thoughts to the courtroom. She criticizes the queen s decision to make the sentence before the verdict, Stuff and nonsense! The idea of having the sentence first! (146). It is thought that the Queen of Hearts actually symbolizes a real queen of England. Queen Margaret of Anjou ruled from 1445 to 1461, and then again from 1470 to 1471. She was married to King Henry VII and she had a son named Edward. She fought for the house of Lancaster which has a red rose for its family name (Margaret). This does connect to the Queen of Hearts when her servants had to paint the roses red. Why, the fact is, you see, Miss, this here ought to have been a red rose tree, and we put a white one in by mistake; and, it the Queen was to find it out, we should all have our heads cut off, you know. Discrimination is mentioned in many pieces of classical literature such as Shakespeare s Othello. In this classical play the main character Othello is never truly accepted into the Venetian society because he is a Moor from Northern Africa. His skin color caused people to view him differently and also presented problems when he tried to find a wife. After he eventually found and married Desdemona her father Brabantio still did not approve of him; he said She, in spite of nature, Of years, of country, credit, everything, To fall in love with what she feared to look on! It is a judgment maimed and most imperfect That will confess perfection so could err Against all rules of nature (Act I, Scene 3). Before Othello married Desdemona Brabantio saw him as an honorable leader and great man, but after their marriage he accuses him of black magic and urges their marriage to be annulled by the Duke. This discrimination led to Othello s doubt and self conscience attitude which, ultimately leads to his demise at the end of the play. We form an opinion within the first 30 seconds of meeting someone and that plays a vital role in the relationships formed. Similarly with films, the audiences usually identifies with the genre within a few minutes of the screening. With that in mind, this analysis will focus upon decoding the opening sequence of two contrasting films in order to understand its tone and genre. In this case, the opening sequence is defined as the point until which the title is established, this is usually within the first 120 to 180 seconds of the film. Furthermore, the movie begins at night which suggests a sense of romance, which is a central theme of the film. However, in The Shining , the camera follows a single yellow car through a changing scenery of mountains and landscapes. From the wideness of the shots, we see the environment as desolated and lonely. The audience is aware that there is no sign of life apart from the driver of the car. This hints that isolation will be an important theme of the film. It also establishes the driver as the central character of the film. Thomas Caldwell describes framing as a way of withholding information from the audience (Caldwell, 2005). Although conversely, it is also a way of including an image or object within a frame to convey a specific meaning. In What If shots of the Toronto skyline are frequently shown throughout the film, usually in the background or out of focus, to reinforce the idea established in the beginning that the city is another character in the film. Similarly, In The Shining the hotel is where the entire narrative unfolds. Hence, it is imperative to focus on the location at the beginning of the film itself. Humanity of the Primitive in Heart of Darkness, Dialect of Modernism and Totem and Taboo The ways in which a society might define itself are almost always negative ways. We are not X. A society cannot exist in a vacuum; for it to be distinct it must be able to define itself in terms of the other groups around it. These definitions must necessarily take place at points of cultural contact, the places at which two societies come together and arrive at some stalemate of coexistence. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The European mind at the fringes of civilisation, when confronted with this Otherness, cannot settle on one or the other of these alternatives. European reactions to other cultures tend to oscillate between these two poles, and thus the same culture can seem simple, authentic, concrete, or, on the other hand, odd, uncanny, and arbitrary (ibid.). While this paradigm of shifting viewpoints is exemplified by Marlow in Joseph Conrad s Heart of Darkness, it seems to find its resolution in Sigmund Freud s assertion that in many ways the modern man is the primitive man. Marlow s oscillation between viewpoints is almost startling in its rapidity. On his very first meeting with the natives of the Congo, he swings from one pole to the other in only a few sentences: They shouted, sang; their bodies streamed with perspiration; they had faces like grotesque masks these chaps; but they had bone, muscle, a wild vitality, an intense energy of movement that was as natural and true as the surf along the coast. They wanted no excuse for being there. They were a great comfort to look at. (Conrad, 17) So in the space of three sentences, the natives go from being grotesque masks to chaps who were as natural and true as the surf along the coast. Saki s Stories and the Impression they Create about Adult Child Relationships In order to answer this question I am going to be focusing on three of Saki?s stories; the story teller, the lumber room and the open window. Children at the time Hector Munro (Saki) was writing these stories would have had very vivid imagination; this is shown in Saki s story The Open Window when the niece makes up the saga of Mr Sappleton s death, illustrates how imaginative children can be, and that adults are very easily fooled. Fooling adults is a key theme in Saki s stories; another time when it occurs is in the story The Lumber Room when Nicholas dupes his aunt into believing that he is somehow trying to get into the gooseberry garden, ... This is shown in Saki?s story ?The Open Window? when the Mr Nuttel believes the nieces story because he has no reason to think that a fifteen year old girl has any reason to lie, especially about something as horrible as death. Again these also relates to the theme of children being able to fool adults, because they are seen as innocent. I am now going to write about the characters in Saki?s stories. Each story contains an Aunt, who is perceived a strict and a person who follows the rules of Edwardian society very closely, and children, who tend to break the regulations that Edwardian society has, and by some other characters, like the Batchelor in the story ?The Story Teller? and Mr Nuttel in the story ?The Open Window? Firstly I am going to concentrate on the Bachelor in ?The Story Teller?. He is different to the rest of the adults in the early stories because he tells the children a story about a young girl is ?horribly good?. The concept of someone been horribly good is alien to Edwardian society. Furthermore in the same story he also mentions that the girl who is ?horribly good? gets killed by a wolf. This is another idea that would not have been thought possible to happen in Edwardian society, because they believed that you can never be too good. Johannes Brahms was one of the 19th century s greatest composers and one of the leading musicians of the Romantic era. Brahms, together with Ludwig Van Beethoven and Johann Sebastian Bach, was considered one of the Three B s of German music. This shows Brahms significance in German music, as he is one of the symbols of German music. Not only did Brahms compose German music, but he also composed Hungarian music. This is thought provoking because it was unusual for a German to compose Hungarian music as well. This essay will be discussing what made Brahms compose Hungarian gypsy music. Also, Zigeunerlieder Op.103, one of Brahms pieces that contain the Hungarian gypsy element will be examined. They usually played in bands, and most gypsy bands had an interesting combination of instruments, two violins, a double bass, and the cimbalom, a large Hungarian dulcimer. The Assigned Portrait By Anthony Van Dyck The assigned portrait is a work by Anthony van Dyck that dates back to 1621, presumably finished before the artist left his native city of Antwerp for Italy (Genua). From the title, we gather that Van Dyck is depicting a family of three. The father is sat on the right, while the mother is sat on the left; they are both facing the viewer. Their young child is positioned on the mother s lap, its head turned towards the father. The colour scheme includes rich, dark colours for the attire of the couple, a vibrant red colour for the drapery behind the mother and similar shades of dark green for the mother s skirt, the child s skirt and the velvet fabric on the furniture approximate to the child s skirt. However, the features of the father in our case study look oddly familiar. That is because they are much more similar to the characteristics of the father in the portrait The Family of Cornelis de Vos (1584/5 1651), also by Van Dyck. In addition to the facial features, Van Dyck diligently portrayed the fine lace ruff and sleeves of the man s attire and the tightly starched ruff of the woman (The State Hermitage Museum, Family Portrait ) in both portraits, pairing those with delicate hand gestures, present in both paintings. To boot, Van Dyck used the same landscape art as a background for the father s head and the same deep red coloured blinds behind the mother. The colour schemes and even the golden button details and the wooden handle on the furniture where the mother is sat are alike, too. Given these similarities (and the fact that de Vos painted a portrait of his own family during the same period), it might be possible that the family in the portrait is actually that of Cornelis de Vos. Atrial fibrillation is the result of an irregular or fast heartbeat this will often cause an inadequate circulation throughout the rest of the body. (UCSF.(2012). When cardiac ablation is performed the surgeon is targeting the diseased conductive tissue once this is done, this will assist in correcting atrial fibrillation within the heart. These surgeries can be either minimally invasive or require an open surgical approach. Cardiac ablation is achieved through a cardiac catheter this delivers radiofrequency energy or cryoenergy to the defective area this is considered to be a minimally invasive approach. The electrophysiologist will insert a catheter into the femoral vein/artery and threads it to the right or left atrium and ventricle. They will then test different areas of the heart to try and reproduce dysrhythmia upon doing this they will then ablate the area of the heart where the disturbance takes place. Another alternative would be an open surgery known as a sternotomy approach this is where a midline incision is made in the sternum of the chest. Cannulation of the superior and inferior vena cava will then take place for a cardiopulmonary bypass. The surgeon will occlude the ascending aorta and infuse cardioplegic solution into the coronary arteries. Once this is done a right and left atriotomy is performed and the targets are ablated. The atriotomies are closed, the aorta is unclamped, cardiopulmonary bypass is stopped, cannulas are removed, chest tubes will be inserted at this time and the surgical wound is closed. First I ll give you the definition or what traditional and sustainable agriculture are.Traditional Agriculture is an old fashion way of agriculture. Sustainable Agriculture is a newer way. Also the definition for Agriculture: is a way of farming and practicing a way of producing wool or food. The reason that I choose Sustainable is because it doesn t damage a lot like traditional agriculture does. But that s my personal opinion. I will tell you why I think Sustainable is better and what advantages it has. A way that Traditional agriculture damages the environment is by killing the topsoil and subsoil. Also it kills pest that are not harmful for the crops. An example would be ladybugs who are affected when the pesticide from the plants runoff and go to the ladybugs habitat and get on their food and that s how traditional affects them. It can even affect us, when the level is high on the plants the higher is the chance of getting ill , like cancer.
