Stylistic And Narrative Features In Homer s The Odyssey
Discuss the ways that stylistic and narrative features are used in The Odyssey to construct interesting
and diverse female characters. Homer uses stylistic and narrative features to construct interesting and
diverse female characters in his epic poem The Odyssey . Characters such as Penelope, Athene, Circe
and Calypso are developed into varied and stimulating characters through the use of various stylistic
and narrative features. Homer uses the stylistic feature of epic similes to depict Penelope as a diverse
and interesting character. Homer offers this epic simile as a brief look into the inner thoughts and
feelings of Penelope whilst also performing the task of creating rhythm during the poem. Homer
writes Her mind in torment, wheeling like some lion at bay, dreading the gangs of hunters closing their
cunning ring around him for the finish. This epic simile is used by Homer to better understand the
torment and fear felt by Penelope at the possibility of having to unwittingly marry one of her suitors.
Homer also uses epithets to describe Penelope s personality further, often refereeing to her as Wise
Penelope , cautious or careful Penelope . This offers the audience a general and brief reminder of the
type of character traits Penelope possesses. Epithets are often used by Homer to profoundly highlight
the importance of a character within the story line and to catch the attention of the reader. Through
these literary techniques, Homer creates an interesting and

The Negative Effects Of Marijuana On The Human Body
Nik Richter Mr Q Eng 090 7 December 2017 Effects of Marijuana on the human body Marijuana is
the main dried part of the cannabis plant. Marijuana is from the flowers, seeds, leaves, and stems.
Marijuana has many names such as pot, weed, hash, Dank, gas, bud, Broccoli and tons of other names.
The main way people use marijuana is by smoking or vaping it. However you can also consume
marijuana as an ingredient in food, tea, or oils. Marijuana is one of the most commonly used drugs in
the world, used by millions of people throughout the United States on a regular basis. In fact this drug
is used by many famous people which may make the drug seem like there s nothing wrong with it and
it s cool. Kids as young as ages of 13 are getting involved with this drug. They may try marijuana
without knowing what it is or what effects is has on you. With the young ages and amount of people
getting involved with marijuana. The world should know what they are actually smoking and what the
effects of marijuana are on the human body. Depending on which way you take the drug affects how
long it takes to kick in, how long it lasts and the effects you get from the drug. The effects from
marijuana can be both positive and negative. This is why there is a huge nationwide debate on the
legalization for both medical marijuana and recreational use of marijuana. First let s start with the
central nervous system. When marijuana is used the active chemical in it know as THC triggers your

Physical Ability Tests For Industrial And Organizational...
Physical ability tests will commonly use various tasks or exercises requiring physical ability in order
to test performance (Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology [SIOP], 2016). An
assessment of physical ability may be necessary for some jobs, and the relation between physical
ability and job performance is of particular interest. For example, a police officer or firefighter that has
limited mobility may find it difficult to perform basic tasks required of the job. Firefighters have to
carry heavy equipment, and sometimes people, in situations that can be quite hazardous, such as a
burning building. Police often are required to actively pursue, defend, and/or apprehend fleeing
suspects (Cohen, Swerdlik, Sturman, 2013). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This would also have the added benefit of preventing or minimizing risk of injury to employees or
others, save on medical costs, and workers compensation costs. Another major advantage of physical
ability tests is that they are not influenced by any attempt of the test taker to fake a response or try to
use impression management (SIOP, 2016). Slide 4 Limitations As with most tests, along with the
many advantages, there are also limitations to physical ability tests. These are important to know since
knowledge of them may help to mitigate their impact when testing for physical ability. Physical ability
tests are generally more apt to display different results based on gender than most other types of tests
(SIOP, 2016). This will be discussed in more detail a little later in the presentations. A possible
limitation with physical ability tests is that issues may occur in employee selection if the test is used to
diagnose medical conditions, rather than just actual ability to perform a job related task (SIOP, 2016).
This is true of most tests though, since how a test is used is usually as important as choosing the right
test. Some physical ability tests can be relatively expensive, depending on the type, and may require
certain kinds of equipment or tools, as well as proper administration of the test (SIOP, 2016). These
types of tests can also require

Speech About My Journey
My journey I am very humbled to be in front of you today. The Philip from 3 years ago would have
never imagined himself on the Principia Ridgeway stage giving a senior speech in front of such an
assembly, not even in his wildest dreams. Unlike everyone else, i didn t have that much time to think
about senior speeches, these were just things that I heard of and saw only in the movies, so you can
imagine how much of a movie celebrity I feel right now. How much I wish my friends back home
could see me now, they wouldn t believe that I finally got to put on a suit that fits me. Even though at
that time i wasn t able to see this day, having to stand in front of you giving you an insight of my
journey to Principia is such an honour and privilege. Ever since an aunt of mine told my mother about
Christian Science and introduced part of my family to, it turned out to be the answer to the life
questions that most of my family members had. It was later on that i came to find out about it at
church that not a day ever passed that i didn t badger about it to my mum until she finally gave in to
actually putting in an application for me. I was in the boy s dorm in school when i got the call from
my mum telling me that she had put in my application to be accepted to attend principa. I told to
repeat this statement then i put the phone speaker that everyone around me could hear it. At first the
room was filled with silence but then someone broke out with a low tone sheepishly saying

The Humoral Theory Of William Shakespeare s Romeo And Juliet
The humoral theory is one of the oldest theories of Medicine that proposed that our bodies are made
up of four different humours: black bile, blood, phlegm, and yellow bile. It was believed that while in
good health the humours were in a harmonious balance throughout the body but illness is said to have
disrupted that balance causing one or more humour to become disordered. It is also said that the mind
is effected by the equilibrium of the four temperaments known as melancholic, sanguine, choleric, and
phlegmatic and that they dispersed to make up certain characteristics or personality traits. Critics have
long described Shakespeare as using these humours and temperaments as a way for the audience to
understand the character, plot and other aspects of his plays. In such plays as Romeo and Juliet where
critics have described Romeo as being a melancholy figure it is exceptionally brought about by using
the four humours involved in the humoral theory that is said to have first originated by Hippocrates
and later elaborated on by Galen. The four humours include Black Bile which is related to the
melancholic temperament and said to be associated with the element earth, the season of winter, the
planet Saturn, the spleen, and cold and dry qualities. The humour Blood is related to the sanguine
temperament and associated with the element air, the season spring, the planet Jupiter, the heart, and
hot and moist qualities. While Phlegm is associated with the temperament phlegmatic

A Brief Note On Track Cellphone Usage And Moral Agents
Case 1: Developing Apps to Track Cellphone Usage
Moral Agents The moral agents in this situation are the children, the parents and the application
developer. The children have a few possible choices that their allowed to make regarding this situation
where their privacy is invaded. They could research and look into using applications that will hide
their location, their data and other important information the parents might want to know about their
kid. Or the children can choose the less moral route of completely removing the application from their
device or blocking it. The parents are faced with a tough ethical decision of whether or not to monitor
their kids. Because if the parents monitor their kids, then the safety of the kids will ... Show more

This would causes a chain reaction, since the company would get a lot of bad reputation then the
current developers would abandon ship and look for greener pastures since most of the public is
pointed at the company and not at the individual developers. Another point to consider is the privacy
of the children. Not only do the parents have the ability to monitor their kids, but if someone were to
hack into the parent s device then they too could monitor the children. This also applies to the
company, if they lack the ability to keep their clients safe, then hundreds to millions of children s
locations would be vulnerable to potential child molesters, kidnappers, etcetera.
Who/What are the stakeholders? The most obvious stakeholder is the company that develops the
application. This company has to balance financial longevity with maintaining a moral and legal
standing in society. Any software company s primary goal is to make money, however, by creating a
controversial piece of software, this company is risking potential loss of revenue in order to be on the
leading edge of new trends. If there is any sort of backlash over the morality of a monitoring
application, the company can be forever tarnished by their ventures and lose current and possible
customers in droves. Not only is the company putting their profits at risk, they are also putting their
most precious investments at risk, their

The On The Public Option
The Public Option
The public option was extraordinarily popular among the liberal democratic base buts its benefits were
regularly overstated. At heart of the challenges of the public option were the solution was a veil for a
government run healthcare plan and the pre text to a single payer solution. If over time the
government plan were cheaper than private insurance it would erode the insurance business and
eventually put them out of business.
Many have argued any public option using the government s power to negotiate would be unfair
competition and ultimately put the private insurers out of business, which is true in theory. The
government gas significant control over the cost of provider services and like what happens with ...

and it didn t work. As Medicare spending grew faster than the economy, the new law required
Medicare fees to be reduced and both parties of Congress have refused to enforce the provision.

The Sacred Canopy Summary
In his book, The Sacred Canopy: Elements of a Sociological Theory of Religion, Peter L. Berger
details a sociological approach to viewing religion as a human necessity. Berger argues that humans
go through the process of world building in order to create the human specific order they lack
biologically. Berger s theory depends primarily on three key aspects: externalization, objectivation,
and internalization. Through these social and cognitive processes, humans create society, culture, and
ultimately religion. Looking at religion through Berger s sociological lens effectively identifies how
religions and their various beliefs have come to be accepted in our society. In my second visit to the
Islamic Center of San Antonio my aim was to hone in on the most deeply fixed aspects of Islam in an
effort to trace them back through Berger s three stages of world building. For instance, one of the most
striking aspects of members of the Islamic Center of San Antonio is their strict commitment to prayer.
The members I spoke with emphasized the importance of sticking to the Salah (daily prayers plus the
Friday prayer) times. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This strict adherence to the Salah schedule is the result of socialization, which Berger describes as the
process of learning to live within the constructs of society (Berger Religion and World Construction ).
Socialization is completed after something is externalized, given objectivity, and then internalized.
Externalization is the continuous creation of both the physical and non physical aspects that make up
society (Berger Religion and World Construction ). Salah times are not much different from most
aspects of Islam in that they are believed to be taught to the people by the Prophet Muhammad who
learned from Allah

The Main Features of Weimar Germanys Golden Years Between...
The Main Features of Weimar Germanys Golden Years Between 1925 1929
There where many events between the years of 1925 1929 in Weimar Germany that were seen as
golden years. The diplomatic skills of Gustav Stresemann, the foreign minister allowed Germany to
excel in foreign affairs. Politically Stresemann wanted to improve relations between Germany and the
rest of Europe and also the USA. In 1925 the Locarno Treaty took place and Germany accepted the
borders with France and Belgium that were agreed in the Treaty of Versailles. Germany accepted that
the Rhineland would remain a demilitarised zone. Also France and Germany agreed to settle any
disputes. This meant that they would respect the German ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With this it enabled Germany to raise matters of German interest. The introduction of Germany to the
league of nations was definitely a major feature in the golden years between 1925 1929 because
talking with the likes of Britain and France in the League of nations assembly was a huge step for
Germany s ranking with the rest of the world.
It was not only politically that the years between 1925 1929 were called golden years. Culturally the
Weimar experienced some high points between these years. In the years between 1924 and 1929 there
was certainly a great array of talent in the Weimar. There was a great increase in literature, drama, art,
music, and architecture. The increase in all of these made the entertainment and leisure in Germany
higher than it had ever been before. With this increase it gave the people of Germany a great deal of
pride because they were challenging Paris as the cultural centre of Europe. Also the increase in
Weimar culture boosted the morale of the country. This was because the culture helped the German
people to take their minds off the past years and enjoy themselves, it especially helped them forget
about the war that had occurred only a few years before. The culture in Weimar was definitely a main
feature when talking about the golden years that had occurred between 1925 1929. Without the

Coercion by Douglas Rushkoff
Introduction: They Say The first part of the book introduces the idea of they, the people who seek to
influence our lives in some form or fashion, and it poses questions about our collective cultural
behaviors that have become an everyday event. The author introduces himself to us the readers. He
also expresses his reason for writing the book by pointing to the backfire effect his previous books.
Because he was a media/advertisement consultant, he acts as a double agent writing down and
reporting the coercive practices from everyday people to large corporations. And that is exactly what
he does in the book. He does not reach to conclusions and point at the responsible parties, but instead
he strictly reports the facts, although no ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Why? It creates a sort of scenario that puts the customer into a fantasy. The customer is forced to obey
when he is asked presumptive questions. To make people quickly sign the contract for the car, Jim
tried to seem like an ally to people. He would tell customers that the big, bad manager made a mistake
and that they needed to sign quickly before the manager realized he made the error. Since many of us
have caught on to this extremely traumatizing experience, we all live to loathe it. So GM launched a
new brand, Saturn, to make the car buying experience less regrettable. Rushkoff says that although
this might not seem like coercion, but actually we are coerced into buying a car at fixed price just so
that we appear not to get ripped off. The way coercion is really effective is by making it hide so well
that the people who sell us things, like the happy, cheerful youths at GAP, do not themselves know
that they are coercing. This can be achieved by having ambiguous goals in acrostic poems spelling out
the company s name. Another way is mind washing the employees by training courses. These
techniques to hide coercion are so well hidden that people actually blame themselves if a store earns
less than expected profits or if it goes out of business. A company called AMRAP exploited our social
survivor skills so well that it had to be shut down by the Federal Trade Commission. They used social

Manzana Insurance Company
Case:
Manzana Insurance Fruitvale Branch (Abridged)
Harvard Business School
Executive Summary
Fruitvale s core management problem is the low performance due to an unacceptable long turnaround
times (TAT). Especially because of the late Renewals many of Fruitvale´s customers are turning to its
major competitor Golden Gate. The operating performance needs to be improved by eradicating the
bottleneck in Underwriting. This will be achieved by restructuring and simplifying the process.
Through our solution we are going to achieve a new TAT of 0,518 days (3:53 hours). Thereby we hope
to recapture the lost market share and satisfy our customers. In average all daily incoming insurance
requests will be processed in an extremely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An UT will therefore underwrite two requests. After underwriting both each team member will rate
one of the two requests. It is important that the DCs distribute similar requests in terms of rating time
to one certain UT. Due to the fusion of step two and three 25% (time savings in writing and getting
into the case) or more of rating time will be saved. In order to stay within a save margin we reduced
the weighted average rating time by 25% and added this to the weighted average time of underwriting.
We divided the weighting time of the first request lying on the desk while the second is being
processed on both requests. In average 12 requests will be processed by the UTs every 109.6 minutes.
Every 54.8 minutes (109.6/2 min) 6 requests can be processed by the policy writing department.
Hence the average service rate in step two and three is the same. This would also increase productivity
by decreasing queuing time.
Including all these changes our calculations lead to a TAT of 3:53 hours (see Apendix)
We will not set priorities on certain products (RUNs, RERUNs, RAPs, RAINs). We will rather
implement FIFO for all products, independent of the profit generated. In order to motivate the
employees to do so Salary/Plus can set incentives by rewarding an increase of the weighted average
time needed to process a request. This is also a very fair solution with regard to the clients.
Conclusion
We will be able to renew

For some people these therapies work their best together and for others just one does the job. The first
therapy is exposure therapy, exposure therapy asks patients to confront, in a safe way, the very
situations, objects, people and memories they have attached to the trauma (Foa 2001) This therapy
helps the patient confront their fears in a healthy way, to try to slay the beast and get on with their
lives. The second therapy is anxiety management. Anxiety management is five techniques taught to
people that help cope with the anxiety experienced from PTSD. The five techniques are, breathing
training, relaxation, assertiveness training, positive thinking and self talk [and] thought stopping.
These techniques help people calm down enough to cope with their fears slowly, and is usually is used
with the exposure therapy process. The third therapy is cognitive therapy. Cognitive therapy is positive
thinking and helps you understand how your thoughts affect your feelings. (Foa 2001) By using these
four steps the therapy helps achieve positive feelings and thoughts. Step one, become more aware of
distressing thoughts. Step two, pay attention to connections between your thoughts, feelings and
behaviors. Step three, challenge (talk back to) your negative thoughts. Last but not least step four,
substitute positive thoughts for negative ones. (Foa, 2001) Psychotherapy is a

Alcoholism In The Sun Also Rises
The Sun Also Rises is a deceiving novel. Opening with absolutely riveting scenes such as characters
drinking in a café, characters drinking in a speakeasy, and characters drinking in hotel rooms, the
reader can easily confuse the novel for reality television in print form. But what lies under these
scenes are actually calls of help resonating from the characters. The reason for this desperation is that
Hemingway and his characters are members of The Lost Generation. Dictionary.com defines this
group as men and women who came of age during or immediately following World War I . Due to
WWI causing this abrupt upheaval, many people became disillusioned with their previous civilian

There are a few reasons why this is the case. Firstly, the Count is part of a different generation from
the rest of the characters. Analysed by Outi Hakola and Sari Kivistö, Mippipopolous is in his seventies
due to being twenty one during Britain s 1868 expedition to Abyssinia (25). Due to his age,
Mippipopolous has had decades to cope with the tragedies of war compared to the few years The Lost
Generation has had. Shown when Mippipopolous says I have been around very much. I have been
around a very great deal (Hemingway 52), It is entirely possible the Count faced the same issues in
life; the difference being, however, Mippipopolous scars are faded compared to the fresh wounds of
the younger generation. Secondly, Mippipopolous has the funds befitting of a count. When offering
Brett ten thousand dollars to go to Biarritz (28), Mippipopolous shows that he has little to no financial
worries; unlike characters such as Mike Campbell, who sullied away his family inheritance after the
war. Following Maslow s Hierarchy of Needs, this forms a foundation of safety that allows the
comfort needed to focus on one s self, and not just the day to day issues that others face. Finally,
Mippipopolous is one of the few characters that does not show any romantic feelings nor jealousy
towards a specific person. Instead, when asked if he s never fallen in love, the Count cryptically

Modern British society is constantly changing, over the years many waves of new immigrants have
brought with them new cultural influences. Language and cultural differences can pose a problem so it
is important to be aware of these differences and use good communication skills when dealing with
EASL families. Be aware that adults who do not speak English as a first language could feel
vulnerable and uncomfortable with the lack of understanding and it could lead to a lot of
miscommunication. They may feel less confident in approaching people and may often rely on others
for information and could feel excluded.
Being aware of social and cultural differences can help identify potential issues.
People as individuals will always have different ability, physically and mentally which may cause
them to have limited communication ability such as blind people, deaf people or people who have
issues regarding cognitive ability. It is very important that people have the support to help them
participate as much as possible in school life as pupils, parents or staff members. As part of the

WWII and the Road to Midway Essay
World War Two came to America on December 7th, 1941. The focus on America s involvement in the
war generally focuses on the European front. What must be remembered is the time and sacrifices
made in the Pacific theatre. America s entry into the war on the Pacific was not an immediate success.
It took American forces until the summer of 1942 at the Battle of Midway to become properly
prepared for the war. The American military learned much from their losses both through the strengths
of the Japanese forces and America s own faults. After these losses were realized, changes were made
within the military. These improvements allowed the American forces to turn the war back and begin
to have successes in the Pacific. Pearl Harbour ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another aspect of the Japanese success was powerful and effective tactics. Tactics include the training
of the Japanese soldiers and their objectives in battle. Japanese soldiers were trained to die honourable
to fight to the death and never be taken prisoner3. Training the soldiers to fight this way was not only
traditionally Japanese, but it inspired them to continue fighting beyond what would be seen as a
reasonable time. This sincere dedication to defending their people and Emperor (the cause of this
training) allowed the Japanese soldiers to be effective killers even when faced with undeniable
defeat4. Beyond their training, the Japanese had other advantages in their battle objectives. The use of
radar was essential to the Americans, and so the Japanese were often ordered to target the radar
stations on islands before beginning full assaults5. Targeting the radar stations prevented the
Americans from properly estimating the Japanese forces or from knowing where they were headed.
The final tactical advantage the Japanese had was that their air force consisted of small experienced
squads especially for important missions6. Having been involved in a number of minor wars in east
Asia in the 1930s, Japanese forces were far more experienced; this lead to a much greater
effectiveness than the inexperienced Americans. Technologically, Japan was also ahead of America at
the outset of the war. This, partially, is due to experience and having been

Examples Of Structuralist Film Theory
B. Theories From a different angle of view, the ultimate aim of culture/media theories is to provide
theoretical/academic foundation to different genres within art and media. Likewise, there are several
film theories aiming to provide theoretical framework to different genres within motion picture.
Besides, these theories help to perceive the relationship between other genres within art and
Hollywood movies.
Structuralist Film Theory One can easily identify that this theory is interconnected with structuralism,
especially related to structural linguistics. This theory claims that directors basically make use of
different codes to construct meaning. For instance, different scenes are combined into a single story
with the help of editing. If editing is not done, the viewers cannot perceive the directors codes or
ideas. But in Hollywood films, utmost importance is given to editing because the directors know that
editing can provide spontaneity to their films as a whole.
Post structuralist Film Theory One can see that Post structuralism is basically an extension of

Marxism. For instance, films produced under Marxist influence provided ample importance to

explore the scope of group mentality, providing less importance to individual heroism. On the other
side, corporate overtone can be seen in Hollywood movies, which is totally against Marxist ideology.
Still, some traces of Marxism can be seen in the movies by Hollywood directors like James Cameron.

Billy Budd Mutiny
Essay #4: Billy Budd Would you go against the country you love? In Herman Melville s novella Billy
Budd , Billy Budd was a sailor who was impressed into service for the British Navy. During his work
in the Navy, an afterguardsman approached him. He wanted Billy to help him start a mutiny. Some
would say that Billy should help the afterguardsman start a mutiny. Although they agree that a mutiny
would hurt the British Navy, Billy should not help the afterguardsman start a mutiny for the following
reasons: they cannot successfully carry out a mutiny, people will certainly die, and Billy enjoyed
serving the country. There are many factors that would keep them from successfully starting a mutiny.

Lincoln s Second Reconstruction
President Lincoln has always been a strong believer of free labor and antislavery, but he loved the
Union more. Lincoln understood that liberating slaves to the war could challenge both freedom and
the union. Not only that but effect military recruitment in the North. In August 1861, Union General
John General John C. Fremont commanded federal troops in Missouri to emancipate on all slaves in
his jurisdiction. Though Missouri was still a part of the Union, it was a slave state. This leading to a
bloody battleground between the Union and Confederate. Fremont s order surpassed the requirements
of the First Confiscation Act. This Act only freed slaves who had participated in the Rebel War or who
had master that were disloyal to the Union. Lincoln was furious with Fremont for not following the
Confiscation Act. This caused Lincoln to cancel the order and the general to resign. A growing uneasy
Congress, where Republicans dominated, pushed Lincoln on emancipation; later on Congress passed
the Second Confiscation Act. This law gave Union commanders the right to capture slave property as
their armies marched through confederate territory. This Act helped resolve with the problem of slaves
who fled to the Union. When Lincoln presented the emancipation proposal to his cabinet, there was
little support. Secretary of State William H. advised Lincoln that he should wait until the ... Show

Abstract
The purpose of this experiment id to primarily determine the density of Light Coke® and to determine
the precision of 3 types of common lab glassware.
The precision of a graduated cylinder, burette and a pipette were compared by performing two trials
per instrument on a solution of degassed Light Coke®. A 25.00 mL sample of Light Coke® was
measured by each lab glassware studied, and then added to a capped plastic bottle. The mass of the
sample was obtained by subtracting the filled bottle s mass with the empty bottle s ... Show more

Careful emptying of the plastic bottle was ensured to preserve accurate volume measurements in the
subsequent trials.
The mass of the empty, capped plastic bottle was determined using the analytical balance. Afterwards,
25.00 mL of Light Coke® solution was measured in the burette by filling it completely (50.00 mL),
then draining it carefully until 25.00 mL was left. This amount was added to the plastic bottle. The
mass of the bottle was measured again and recorded. This procedure was repeated once more for Trial
II by draining the remaining 25.00 mL of solution in the burette. The results of these trials are
recorded in Table. 2 below.

The Differences Between The And Of The Christian Realist...
The different Christian views struggle with the brokenness of human nature. The difference in views
lies in how this brokenness is interpreted. How does one balance the human being who is born in the
image and likeness of God, yet, has fallen from grace? The two distinct views will revolve around
seeking answers to this question, and what is the best way to act on these answers in dealing with the
broken human. It becomes a question of mercy and grace in this world versus a constant searching by
the human, which only ends in the presence of God. The latter reflects the view of the Christian
Realist.
The philosopher and father of the Christian Realist position, Reinhold Niebuhr, argues that Augustine
s City of God lays the foundation for the Christian realist thought. It is in this work that Augustine
presents a realistic view of humankind that was in contrast with the classical view of the human being.
The latter s view idealized human s unlimited potential because of their ability to reason. Niebuhr
argues that this difference in the viewpoints of Augustine and the classical philosophers lies in
Augustine s biblical, rather than rationalistic, conception of human selfhood with the ancillary
conception of the seat of evil being in the self (Niebuhr, Christian Realism and Political Problems 123
124). It is from this concept that Niebuhr argues that human nature is evil as a result of sin. This sinful
nature of the human has forever shaped his movements. It drives his

Summary And Interaction Of Celebration Of Discipline By...

Spirit Empowered Living
9 September 16, 2015 Summary and Interaction of Celebration of Discipline by Richard J. Foster
In the beginning of Celebration of Discipline, Richard J. Foster undergoes a thorough explanation of
our ages most desperate need; deep people. He proclaims how our superficiality and lack of common
sense regarding spiritual life has crippled us and left us living in the surface rather than depts. He
mentions how we have gotten accustomed to relying on our own willpower ultimately not containing
the correct attitude or reasons for practicing the classical disciplines. Therefore, we lack the pieces of
our inward and outward life as believers of Christ. Foster ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This brings the second inward discipline, prayer. Prayer is mentioned as one of the most central
disciples due to its intimacy of conversation between us and god himself. Foster describes prayer as
our ability to ask for change in circumstances, to pray is to change (P.33). He explains how Jesus often
withdrew from the crowds to pray to his father. like so, we should withdraw from time to time. Our
disciplines can coincide just as fasting does with prayer; thus being the third discipline prescribed.
Fasting is the abstaining from food for scriptural purpose. (p.48) and is said to be seen as a desperate
measure for emergency. Foster goes deeper into how and why a Christian should fast, but mostly
focuses on its meaning of self control and its centrality being god. Foster s final inward discipline is
the practice of study. Study is the focus to our total transformation from our old selves. It is a specific
experience aimed to form Christian habits. With that, Foster breaks down study into four steps;
repetition, reflection, understanding, and experience which ingrain those habits. In the second part of
the book, Celebration of Discipline, Foster outlines the four outward disciplines. These being;
simplicity, solitude, submission, and service. Simplicity as foster states is an inward reality that results
in an outward life style. (p. 80) which is meant to live out. He says we should be

Hilton ITT Case Study Essay
1. Why might Bollenbach have opened his bidding for ITT at $55 per share? What was his likely
strategy?
The $55 value is on the lower range of the analyst eztimates, with a best guess estimate of $67.94.
Since the value of the stock had been below $45 for 4 months, the offer of 55 dollars represented a
29% premium to investors. Bollenbach knew that management would be resistant of any attempt to be
acquired, regardless of price, because of failed previous attempts to negotiate a friendly merger at year
end 1996. The 55 dollar benchmark created an expectation for ITT management to achieve that level,
or higher and the premium is enough to demonstrate to investors it is a real offer. Their support will be

Bollenbach knew that the next steps would be critical or the deal to go through. As such it was
necessary to first research the investors and arbiters to have better negotiation tactics when the time
comes. The resistant board of directors had not changed in the mean time and would likely resist any
offer, including the unlikely event of another contender entering bidding. If the price of the stock fell
below the $55 range, or the Board of Directors changed Bollenback would likely aggressively
negotiate with shareholders to close the deal as quickly as possible.
3. ITT s value has changed a lot over the recent events. Prior to any offer when ITT s stock was
trading at 43 dollars, the stand alone value of its equity was 16.4 billion dollars. With the 55 dollar
offer to ITT, the company s value went up to approximately 21 billion. After the offer, the stock was
trading at $63.50, which gave the total equity a value of 24.2 billion dollars. With the proposed
trivesture proposal, the company would lose synergistic value as three separate companies, compared
to one large company. Examples of these include a number of overhead costs which gain economies of
scale. In addition, ITT likely has synergistic revenues coming from the fact that it operates all three
business segments. Analyst estimates indicate that the present value of the synergies whichh ITT

Pericles Funeral Oration Analysis
As an historian, Thucydides wrote a very rational and contemporary account of the Peloponnesian
war. Being an Athenian, his account gives us an eye witness record of not only the events, but the
causes and motives that lead up those events. For a historian to be objective Thucydides change in
attitude regarding the war is subtly woven into his narrative.
In Pericles Funeral Oration , we see war in a favorable light brought about by its protagonist Pericles,
who does not hold back in delivering an impassioned eulogy for the fallen soldiers before the people.
His reasons and his deliverance being compelling, he highlights the purpose and necessity of war as a
means to preserve and protect this great democracy which favors all men equally, opens its doors to
foreigners, provides justice for all, allows the freedom to advance oneself as well as indulge in
pleasure. The education of the Athenian schools far surpassing any other empire, in producing well
rounded men who are free spirited and yet will not hesitate to defend the nation, the legacy of the
forefathers and fathers who also fought to acquire, enrich and sustain an empire such as Athens is all
worth fighting to preserve. He highlights the power of sacrifice as honorable for the love of a great
country in his conclusion when he says, And where the rewards for merit are the greatest, there are
found the best citizens.
After the patriotic speech of Pericles, the city of Athens takes an ominous turn where because of the
congested, walled in city, a plague sweeps over killing an estimated 25% of the people, in which
Thucydides was also a survivor, as described in the article titled, The plague of Athens by R. Littman.
What stands out in this account is the complete dismantling of the cities honor where in desperation
and hopelessness its people indulged themselves in excess and lawlessness ensued. The fear of being
consumed by this painful, fatal, illness that did not discriminate and had no known cure caused its
inhabitants to throw caution to the wind, abdicating all that the Athenians were known for in Pericles
oration in terms of valor, reason, morality, honor and fear of the gods. Even reason and oration could
not save the city. What made this even

The Problem Of Cover Songs
There is a belief in today s society that grew from the past that a cover song is merely a copy or rip off
of the original. This dilemma is discussed in an article by a man named Don Cusic, who has taught
courses in the music business industry since the year of 1982 and is known as a pioneer in music
business education. Cusic s other accomplishments and credibility come from being an historian on
country music, a scholar and writer known worldwide, author of over 209 books and 500 articles, and
having appeared on CMT programs, TNN shows, and two BBC series (Belmont University). The
reason that cover songs are an important discussion in today s society is because there is an increase
presently in cover song creation and also a steady increase of criticism on cover songs. This is due to
the creation of increasingly popular video uploading sites on the internet like YouTube, where any
person can go in, view a cover song and assert that it s bad because it isn t the original song. The
article In Defense of Cover Songs is a strong argumentative article with weak points due to providing
strong historical information on a cover song s influence on the creation of major known songs and
artists and that it conveys a weak unprofessional bias opinion from the author Cusic, who argues that
cover songs are a person s own interpretation of a song and that critics and fans should not belittle a
cover song compared to an original song. First, in the article he discusses the loss of

Pros And Cons Of Abortion In India
Abortion is one delicate subject when it comes to debating about it because of people religious beliefs
and the controversy surrounding it. But what people don t know that in many parts of the world
abortion is a big part of their daily life choices. And by that, I mean that most people tend to have
abortions, depending on the sex of their baby, because of their belief system. China and India are one
of the major countries that prefer males over females because men are the ones that are always in
power in the household and also they are the ones that tend to inherit the majority of the family s
benefits. China has one of the highest abortion rates, along with that they have the lowest female
population. Throughout my research, I ve learned a lot about sex selective abortion one of those things
that it s traveling to other parts of the world.
The reason I chose to write my report on sex selective abortion is that I saw a documentary called It s
a Girl: The Three Deadliest Words in the World I found it to be intersecting since this was my first
time ever hearing about. I couldn t understand why? Throughout the documentary, you learn mainly
how women in China and in India are being neglected and are forced into having an abortion because
of the sex of their baby. IN INDIA, CHINAAND MANY OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD

Stromal tumors of the ovary include thecoma and fibroma, yet as differentiation between these two
types may be difficult, the term fibrothecoma has emerged. The exact incidence of fibrothecoma is

Cut surface of both was firm, grayish white fascicular pattern with few yellow areas (Fig.1). No

Examples Of Vengeance In The Odyssey
Most of us have heard of the incredible tale of Odysseus and his 10 year long journey home after the
Trojan War. Throughout The Odyssey, we see a variety of very important themes, such as hospitality,

that of vengeance, because it acts as the basis for the adventure. There are numerous indications that
vengeance is on its way, including Penelope s dream, ... the eagle and the geese, which foretells

Why Are The Articles Of Confederation Ineffective
Shortly after America gained independence from England, Americans were faced with the trouble of
setting up a strong central government. Several delegates representing their respective states were
called to the Continental Congress, where they decided to put together a constitution for the new
nation. Delegates agreed that the powers of the government must be limited, so that they wouldn t
resemble the British government. The constitution created by the Congress became known as the

Since Congress was not able to control interstate commerce, states introduced tariffs in order to
promote internal trade. States placed high tariffs on goods coming from other states and low tariffs for

Confederation, Congress was limited from demanding taxation from the states. Due to this, Congress
was not able to generate enough money to operate despite the land ordinances they created. This
eventually led to a revolt, which came to be known as Shay s Rebellion (1786). This was a revolt
against the government for failing to issue paper money, ease taxes, and prevent property foreclosures.
Members of Shay s Rebellion demanded money as compensation and began conducting acts of

not able to provide hard cash to citizens, due to the fact that the government wasn t able to generate

  • 2. Stylistic And Narrative Features In Homer s The Odyssey Discuss the ways that stylistic and narrative features are used in The Odyssey to construct interesting and diverse female characters. Homer uses stylistic and narrative features to construct interesting and diverse female characters in his epic poem The Odyssey . Characters such as Penelope, Athene, Circe and Calypso are developed into varied and stimulating characters through the use of various stylistic and narrative features. Homer uses the stylistic feature of epic similes to depict Penelope as a diverse and interesting character. Homer offers this epic simile as a brief look into the inner thoughts and feelings of Penelope whilst also performing the task of creating rhythm during the poem. Homer writes Her mind in torment, wheeling like some lion at bay, dreading the gangs of hunters closing their cunning ring around him for the finish. This epic simile is used by Homer to better understand the torment and fear felt by Penelope at the possibility of having to unwittingly marry one of her suitors. Homer also uses epithets to describe Penelope s personality further, often refereeing to her as Wise Penelope , cautious or careful Penelope . This offers the audience a general and brief reminder of the type of character traits Penelope possesses. Epithets are often used by Homer to profoundly highlight the importance of a character within the story line and to catch the attention of the reader. • 4. Physical Ability Tests For Industrial And Organizational... Physical ability tests will commonly use various tasks or exercises requiring physical ability in order to test performance (Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology [SIOP], 2016). An assessment of physical ability may be necessary for some jobs, and the relation between physical ability and job performance is of particular interest. For example, a police officer or firefighter that has limited mobility may find it difficult to perform basic tasks required of the job. Firefighters have to carry heavy equipment, and sometimes people, in situations that can be quite hazardous, such as a burning building. Police often are required to actively pursue, defend, and/or apprehend fleeing suspects (Cohen, Swerdlik, Sturman, 2013). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This would also have the added benefit of preventing or minimizing risk of injury to employees or others, save on medical costs, and workers compensation costs. Another major advantage of physical ability tests is that they are not influenced by any attempt of the test taker to fake a response or try to use impression management (SIOP, 2016). Slide 4 Limitations As with most tests, along with the many advantages, there are also limitations to physical ability tests. These are important to know since knowledge of them may help to mitigate their impact when testing for physical ability. Physical ability tests are generally more apt to display different results based on gender than most other types of tests (SIOP, 2016). This will be discussed in more detail a little later in the presentations. A possible limitation with physical ability tests is that issues may occur in employee selection if the test is used to diagnose medical conditions, rather than just actual ability to perform a job related task (SIOP, 2016). This is true of most tests though, since how a test is used is usually as important as choosing the right test. Some physical ability tests can be relatively expensive, depending on the type, and may require certain kinds of equipment or tools, as well as proper administration of the test (SIOP, 2016). These types of tests can also require ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Unlike everyone else, i didn t have that much time to think about senior speeches, these were just things that I heard of and saw only in the movies, so you can imagine how much of a movie celebrity I feel right now. • 7. The Humoral Theory Of William Shakespeare s Romeo And Juliet The humoral theory is one of the oldest theories of Medicine that proposed that our bodies are made up of four different humours: black bile, blood, phlegm, and yellow bile. It was believed that while in good health the humours were in a harmonious balance throughout the body but illness is said to have disrupted that balance causing one or more humour to become disordered. It is also said that the mind is effected by the equilibrium of the four temperaments known as melancholic, sanguine, choleric, and phlegmatic and that they dispersed to make up certain characteristics or personality traits. Critics have long described Shakespeare as using these humours and temperaments as a way for the audience to understand the character, plot and other aspects of his plays. In such plays as Romeo and Juliet where critics have described Romeo as being a melancholy figure it is exceptionally brought about by using the four humours involved in the humoral theory that is said to have first originated by Hippocrates and later elaborated on by Galen. The four humours include Black Bile which is related to the melancholic temperament and said to be associated with the element earth, the season of winter, the planet Saturn, the spleen, and cold and dry qualities. The humour Blood is related to the sanguine temperament and associated with the element air, the season spring, the planet Jupiter, the heart, and hot and moist qualities. • 11. The Sacred Canopy Summary In his book, The Sacred Canopy: Elements of a Sociological Theory of Religion, Peter L. Berger details a sociological approach to viewing religion as a human necessity. Berger argues that humans go through the process of world building in order to create the human specific order they lack biologically. Berger s theory depends primarily on three key aspects: externalization, objectivation, and internalization. Through these social and cognitive processes, humans create society, culture, and ultimately religion. Looking at religion through Berger s sociological lens effectively identifies how religions and their various beliefs have come to be accepted in our society. In my second visit to the Islamic Center of San Antonio my aim was to hone in on the most deeply fixed aspects of Islam in an effort to trace them back through Berger s three stages of world building. It was not only politically that the years between 1925 1929 were called golden years. Culturally the Weimar experienced some high points between these years. Because he was a media/advertisement consultant, he acts as a double agent writing down and reporting the coercive practices from everyday people to large corporations. To make people quickly sign the contract for the car, Jim tried to seem like an ally to people. Since many of us have caught on to this extremely traumatizing experience, we all live to loathe it. So GM launched a new brand, Saturn, to make the car buying experience less regrettable. Rushkoff says that although this might not seem like coercion, but actually we are coerced into buying a car at fixed price just so that we appear not to get ripped off. The way coercion is really effective is by making it hide so well that the people who sell us things, like the happy, cheerful youths at GAP, do not themselves know that they are coercing. This can be achieved by having ambiguous goals in acrostic poems spelling out the company s name. Another way is mind washing the employees by training courses. In order to stay within a save margin we reduced the weighted average rating time by 25% and added this to the weighted average time of underwriting. We divided the weighting time of the first request lying on the desk while the second is being processed on both requests. In average 12 requests will be processed by the UTs every 109.6 minutes. Theories From a different angle of view, the ultimate aim of culture/media theories is to provide theoretical/academic foundation to different genres within art and media. Likewise, there are several film theories aiming to provide theoretical framework to different genres within motion picture. Besides, these theories help to perceive the relationship between other genres within art and Hollywood movies. Structuralist Film Theory One can easily identify that this theory is interconnected with structuralism, especially related to structural linguistics. This theory claims that directors basically make use of different codes to construct meaning. For instance, different scenes are combined into a single story with the help of editing. If editing is not done, the viewers cannot perceive the directors codes or ideas. But in Hollywood films, utmost importance is given to editing because the directors know that editing can provide spontaneity to their films as a whole. • 24. The Differences Between The And Of The Christian Realist... The different Christian views struggle with the brokenness of human nature. The difference in views lies in how this brokenness is interpreted. How does one balance the human being who is born in the image and likeness of God, yet, has fallen from grace? The two distinct views will revolve around seeking answers to this question, and what is the best way to act on these answers in dealing with the broken human. It becomes a question of mercy and grace in this world versus a constant searching by the human, which only ends in the presence of God. The latter reflects the view of the Christian Realist. The philosopher and father of the Christian Realist position, Reinhold Niebuhr, argues that Augustine s City of God lays the foundation for the Christian realist thought. It is in this work that Augustine presents a realistic view of humankind that was in contrast with the classical view of the human being. The latter s view idealized human s unlimited potential because of their ability to reason. Niebuhr argues that this difference in the viewpoints of Augustine and the classical philosophers lies in Augustine s biblical, rather than rationalistic, conception of human selfhood with the ancillary conception of the seat of evil being in the self (Niebuhr, Christian Realism and Political Problems 123 124). It is from this concept that Niebuhr argues that human nature is evil as a result of sin. This sinful nature of the human has forever shaped his movements. It drives his ... • 25. Summary And Interaction Of Celebration Of Discipline By... Daniel Farias Professor Wilson, Joy Thompson Spirit Empowered Living 9 September 16, 2015 Summary and Interaction of Celebration of Discipline by Richard J. Foster In the beginning of Celebration of Discipline, Richard J. Foster undergoes a thorough explanation of our ages most desperate need; deep people. He proclaims how our superficiality and lack of common sense regarding spiritual life has crippled us and left us living in the surface rather than depts. He mentions how we have gotten accustomed to relying on our own willpower ultimately not containing the correct attitude or reasons for practicing the classical disciplines. Therefore, we lack the pieces of our inward and outward life as believers of Christ. Foster ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This brings the second inward discipline, prayer. Prayer is mentioned as one of the most central disciples due to its intimacy of conversation between us and god himself. Foster describes prayer as our ability to ask for change in circumstances, to pray is to change (P.33). He explains how Jesus often withdrew from the crowds to pray to his father. like so, we should withdraw from time to time. Our disciplines can coincide just as fasting does with prayer; thus being the third discipline prescribed. Fasting is the abstaining from food for scriptural purpose. (p.48) and is said to be seen as a desperate measure for emergency. Foster goes deeper into how and why a Christian should fast, but mostly focuses on its meaning of self control and its centrality being god. Foster s final inward discipline is the practice of study. Study is the focus to our total transformation from our old selves. It is a specific experience aimed to form Christian habits. With that, Foster breaks down study into four steps; repetition, reflection, understanding, and experience which ingrain those habits. In the second part of the book, Celebration of Discipline, Foster outlines the four outward disciplines. These being; simplicity, solitude, submission, and service. Simplicity as foster states is an inward reality that results in an outward life style. (p. 80) which is meant to live out. He says we should be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 26. Hilton ITT Case Study Essay 1. Why might Bollenbach have opened his bidding for ITT at $55 per share? What was his likely strategy? The $55 value is on the lower range of the analyst eztimates, with a best guess estimate of $67.94. Since the value of the stock had been below $45 for 4 months, the offer of 55 dollars represented a 29% premium to investors. Bollenbach knew that management would be resistant of any attempt to be acquired, regardless of price, because of failed previous attempts to negotiate a friendly merger at year end 1996. The 55 dollar benchmark created an expectation for ITT management to achieve that level, or higher and the premium is enough to demonstrate to investors it is a real offer. As such it was necessary to first research the investors and arbiters to have better negotiation tactics when the time comes. If the price of the stock fell below the $55 range, or the Board of Directors changed Bollenback would likely aggressively negotiate with shareholders to close the deal as quickly as possible. 3. ITT s value has changed a lot over the recent events. Prior to any offer when ITT s stock was trading at 43 dollars, the stand alone value of its equity was 16.4 billion dollars. With the 55 dollar offer to ITT, the company s value went up to approximately 21 billion. After the offer, the stock was trading at $63.50, which gave the total equity a value of 24.2 billion dollars. With the proposed trivesture proposal, the company would lose synergistic value as three separate companies, compared to one large company. Examples of these include a number of overhead costs which gain economies of scale. In addition, ITT likely has synergistic revenues coming from the fact that it operates all three business segments. • 27. Pericles Funeral Oration Analysis As an historian, Thucydides wrote a very rational and contemporary account of the Peloponnesian war. Being an Athenian, his account gives us an eye witness record of not only the events, but the causes and motives that lead up those events. For a historian to be objective Thucydides change in attitude regarding the war is subtly woven into his narrative. In Pericles Funeral Oration , we see war in a favorable light brought about by its protagonist Pericles, who does not hold back in delivering an impassioned eulogy for the fallen soldiers before the people. His reasons and his deliverance being compelling, he highlights the purpose and necessity of war as a means to preserve and protect this great democracy which favors all men equally, opens its doors to foreigners, provides justice for all, allows the freedom to advance oneself as well as indulge in pleasure. The education of the Athenian schools far surpassing any other empire, in producing well rounded men who are free spirited and yet will not hesitate to defend the nation, the legacy of the forefathers and fathers who also fought to acquire, enrich and sustain an empire such as Athens is all worth fighting to preserve. He highlights the power of sacrifice as honorable for the love of a great country in his conclusion when he says, And where the rewards for merit are the greatest, there are found the best citizens. After the patriotic speech of Pericles, the city of Athens takes an ominous turn where because of the congested, walled in city, a plague sweeps over killing an estimated 25% of the people, in which Thucydides was also a survivor, as described in the article titled, The plague of Athens by R. Littman. What stands out in this account is the complete dismantling of the cities honor where in desperation and hopelessness its people indulged themselves in excess and lawlessness ensued. The fear of being consumed by this painful, fatal, illness that did not discriminate and had no known cure caused its inhabitants to throw caution to the wind, abdicating all that the Athenians were known for in Pericles oration in terms of valor, reason, morality, honor and fear of the gods. Even reason and oration could not save the city. What made this even ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. The Problem Of Cover Songs There is a belief in today s society that grew from the past that a cover song is merely a copy or rip off of the original. This dilemma is discussed in an article by a man named Don Cusic, who has taught courses in the music business industry since the year of 1982 and is known as a pioneer in music business education. Cusic s other accomplishments and credibility come from being an historian on country music, a scholar and writer known worldwide, author of over 209 books and 500 articles, and having appeared on CMT programs, TNN shows, and two BBC series (Belmont University). The reason that cover songs are an important discussion in today s society is because there is an increase presently in cover song creation and also a steady increase of criticism on cover songs. This is due to the creation of increasingly popular video uploading sites on the internet like YouTube, where any person can go in, view a cover song and assert that it s bad because it isn t the original song. The article In Defense of Cover Songs is a strong argumentative article with weak points due to providing strong historical information on a cover song s influence on the creation of major known songs and artists and that it conveys a weak unprofessional bias opinion from the author Cusic, who argues that cover songs are a person s own interpretation of a song and that critics and fans should not belittle a cover song compared to an original song. See, back then, everybody thought that we had unlimited fossil fuels such as gasoline. As the demand for more fuel efficient and more eco friendly cars rose, car companies such as GM, Toyota, as well Mitsubishi invested millions in developing fully electric cars.
