During #TechCampMumbai, the workgroup which Neil D'souza, Bridget Roddy and I (Josephine Dorado) led, tackled the question: How can we use online communities to bridge knowledge gaps & provide volunteer opportunities? Using the Indian NGO Kranti as a case study, we created actions steps and a framework for curricula. TechCamp Mumbai 2013 was held on 19-21 February 2013 in Mumbai, India. http://techcampmumbai.org/

The Future of Learning Technology in UK Higher Education
At Microsoft it’s essential that we understand how we can support
innovative individuals, businesses and organisations to shape the future – and there is no more important area for innovation than Higher Education.
Introduction
Learning delivery in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) is
being reshaped before our eyes, thanks in part to advances
in technology and the new pedagogical theories facilitated by
that technology.
In order to understand more about the ever-evolving
relationship between technology and learning, we spent time
speaking with six of the UK’s leading learning technologists
working within HEIs.
In a series of interviews exploring current practice, changing
needs and key trends, we were able to establish how digital
devices are being used in universities and how cutting-edge
technology can continue to compliment a sector experiencing
fresh emphasis on collaboration, creation and innovation.

OpenCourseWare is Here. ICDE World ConferenceGary Matkin
The OpenCourseWare movement is here. For instance, more than 200 institutions have joined the OpenCourseWare Consortium (OCWC) and they now offer over 8,200 courses worldwide in many languages. The start to the movement provided by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and MIT has now spawned both an expansion of the MIT model and many variations of it. From the beginning, the goal of the OCW movement has been worldwide learning and sharing of content. It now faces new challenges; among them is the challenge of moving from open courses to learning pathways of larger scale, including open degrees. The premise of sharing knowledge from the developed world to developing countries remains an attractive prospect, one which engages the leaders of the movement. Yet, barriers are ever more clear. You will learn of the current state of the OCW movement, its challenges, and its potential. Learn also how to become involved in this movement.
This presentation was given during the AVLM training at Teaching and Learning Department KU Leuven (AVLM stands for AudioVisual Learning Materials), where a selected team of about 15 participants from all over the world, mostly third world countries, come to KU Leuven to learn how to develop and use AVLM in their educational settings, concerning their specific contexts.
They were particularly interested in taking Open Courses them selves, since education is not for all in al lot of countries.
None of them ever heard of OpenCourseWare, and only for one woman the term "creative commons" rang a bell. It made me realize that we still have a lot of work to do in making the world aware of the importance of openness, open courses and open educational resources.

Participative Design of qMOOCs with Deep Learning and 3d Virtual Immersive Environments: - The case of MOOCAgora
The recommendation of the Digital Agenda Assembly 2012 to address the development of suitable socio-technical skills and expertise through open education and MOOCs in order to decrease unemployment in Europe faces three challenges: a) increase MOOC quantity, b) speed-up MOOC delivery and c) improve MOOC quality. The paper argues that a crowd-sourced open education ecosystem, called MOOCAgora, can address the first two challenges by implementing an 8-stage MOOC for a realistic employment business circle. Furthermore the authors propose a new, quality-centered format of MOOCs, the qMOOC, in order to address challenge c, above, as well as qualification and web skills needs.

The Life Cycle of an Open Source MOOC Platform Andreas Wittke
The project aims at developing an intelligent tutoring system, to be applied in open source learning environments, able to monitor, track, analyze and give formative assessment and feedback loop to students within the learning environment, and give inputs to tutors and teachers involved in distance learning to better their role during the process of learning. The software will be developed in java thus could be easily implemented and re-used in most of the common free platforms for eLearning.
Towards a Crowd-sourced Open Education Strategy for Employment in Europe with Qualification-focused MOOCs
by Stylianos Mystakidis , University of Patras & University of Jyväskylä, Finland and Eleni Berki University of Tampere & University of Jyväskylä, Finland
Europe has the opportunity to utilize Open Education to train specialized workforce and boost employment by increasing MOOC quantity, speeding-up MOOC delivery and improving MOOC quality. Authors propose a crowd-sourced open mechanism called MOOCAgora for the innovative design and agile development of qMOOCs. MOOCAgora is the heart of an 8-stage business circle that impacts the job market. An identified local, national or European skills shortage is addressed in MOOCAgora through massive certified delivery of skills and competences in qMOOCs. qMOOCs are a newly proposed quality-centered format of MOOCs that focuses on skills and qualifications construction. qMOOCs can use a modified version of the MOOC canvas framework for qualifications and competences that can be achieved through three educational components/paradigms: deep learning experiences, problem-focused education and 3d virtual immersive environments.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

How to integrate and automatically issue Open Badges in MOOC platforms
1. How to integrate and
automatically issue
Open Badges
in MOOC platforms

8. How to realize the automation process by
simultaneously maintaining simplicity in
managing and earning open badges in
MOOC platforms?
9. Why Badges?
• Hard to motivate learners to actively participate
in non-formal and informal educational systems if
they do not get any recognition for their
achievements
• Mostly no recognition at all for gained skills if a
course has not been completed (just summative
feedback)
• No common standard for acknowledgements
• Certificates are not digitially signed
16. Features
• Badge management via backend
• Assert badges manually
• Assert badges automatically - triggered by the
iMooX user
• Display rudimentary awarding statistics
• Support of two different types of badges (Quiz-
Level Badge, Course-Level Badge)
31. Badge issuing can be implemented
relatively fast and easy and improve the
certification performance of
MOOC platforms
