Effective & Impactful Communicator

2. Know the Persona of the person
Persona is the social
face or mask of the
person. He may not be
what he is portraying.
You need to understand
his “Real Persona” to
communicate
effectively.
3. Types of Persona
• Authoritative & Doer : Generally Senior People in the
organizations. You need to be simple & straight forward
with them. Convince them you will deliver Value. They
will go all out to help you.
• Influencer & No Commitment : They always want to be
fair. They will rather want someone else to take the
decision. Try to take recommendations from them. How
to judge? They will often say – I have liked you / your
idea or proposal. Let me connect you to someone who
handles it.
• Sweet Talker & Waste of Time : They are good for
nothing. The best way to judge them is to ask for
commitment or recommendations. Leave them ASAP.
• Inquisitive & Dangerous : They are generally over
inquisitive in whatever you are doing. They are the
dangerous lot who often back bite. How to judge them?
Try to understand their relationship / relevance to the
discussion.
4. Be Empathetic & Good Listener
When You
Listen &
Understand
You Earn
Trust
People want to deal with someone whom they
TRUST
5. • Body Language : Your Body Language
says it all. Be positive in approach and
portray the positive body language.
• Understand their Point of View. You
may tell them : I can understand
where are you coming from.
• Repeat : You may repeat what the
speaker is saying. Example : “Let me
repeat what you are saying. This will
ensure we are on the same page.”
• Nod & Take Notes : When you nod, you
portray you are listening.
How to be Empathetic & Good Listener
6. Focus on Win Win
Focus on Win Win. A
relationship is successful
when both parties win. You
build a strong long term
relationship when you take
care of other person’s
interests as well.
Do not close the deal for
the heck of it. Wait for the
next right opportunity.
Ref: The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey
7. How to Focus on Win Win
• Understand the other person’s
situation.
• Be honest about your view of his
situation.
• Explain him your situation.
• Close the deal taking the other
party into consideration. However
do not over compromise at your
end to take the deal through.
• Promise a fair next chance if the
current deal is not viable.
9. Why Stories Connect?
Can you make something out of these words?
Riya Dig Slept Mississippi Colours She
Father Oranges Loved Blue Hammer
Red Eccentric Violet Buy Wall Day
They have No Meaning. However you
can form a Story using above words to
give them a Meaning.
Stories Give “Meaning” to
our Words.
Riya Loved Oranges
which were of Blue Red
and Violet Colours. She
went to Mississippi to
Buy a Hammer as she
wanted to Dig a hole in the
Wall. Her Father was
Eccentric and Slept the
whole Day.
10. How to use Storytelling effectively
We are “wired” to hear stories since
our childhood.
• Make the customer / other party part
of the story. It will help them take
Next Step / Action.
• Use examples. My customer ABC has
used this tool and it has delivered
excellent results for them. In fact the
technology person got promoted to
senior general manager after its
successful implementation.
• Use impactful statements.
• Do not exaggerate or give false
statements.
11. Be a Powerful Orator
It’s your
“choice of words”
and
“how you say it”
makes the difference
12. How to be a Powerful Orator
• Be simple & genuine. Say
what you believe.
• Dress appropriately as per the
occasion / participants.
• Share your experiences. It
projects you as a mature
speaker.
• Be crisp and add anecdotes.
Add humour if possible.
• Preparation helps. Discuss the
critical points before the
presentation / meeting.
13. Few Tips
• Speak Slowly. Ensure other person is able
to Understand you. Rephrase your
sentence. You may ask : I hope you are
clear on this. If you want can clarify again.
• Don’t Thrust yourself. Don’t Shout or
Bang Table to prove your point. This way
you will reach nowhere.
• Be Persuasive. Persuasion is
Convincing or Help Believing.
• Be Genuine and say to the other person : I
am on your side OR We are in the same
boat OR I understand your concerns OR
Don’t worry, I will take care.
15. How to Practice Meditation
• In my opinion Meditation is all about
concentrating your energies. Once you
have concentrated them, they become
effective and impactful.
• You can practice it by concentrating on
some good thought, picture or object. You
need to spend only 10-15 mins daily to
see the difference in you.
• Try meditating early morning in the
fresh air.
• Listen to soulful music and read a lot. It
will help push negative energies /
thoughts out of your mind and you will
be able to concentrate.
• Practice Yoga for 10-15 mins daily.
