• Be respectful – Remember we are all human beings. We are all trying to
figure things out in life
• Have integrity – Do the right thing. Be honest, even if others are not
• Keep the peace
3 Key BLOCKS to positive relationships:
• 1. Assuming you know what the other person’s intentions are or
what they are thinking. We should do our best not to try to mind
read. Everyone has their own story, and it is not the same as your
story.
• 2. We talk too much and listen too little. Like the saying goes,
there's a reason we have two ears and only one mouth.
• 3. Jealousy and good, old-fashioned envy. The “I want what they
have” mentality.
Learn Skills…
 Listening - Paying attention and taking into account what is being
said.
 Questioning - Asking to clarify or understand.
 Persuading - Trying to bring others to your point of view.
 Respecting - Having regard or concern for others.
 Helping - Providing assistance, information or other aid.
 Sharing - Taking equal responsibility with other group members.
 Participating - Take part equally in the activity.
Different Personalities…
• Egomaniacs
These people resist direction, they think they always know what is best and they ignore even the nicest of advice or
suggestions. Not only do they think they do not need to improve, they think everyone should consider themselves lucky to
be around them.
• How to Deal:
-Check your own ego at the door; don’t get in a power struggle.Be assertive.
-Distance yourself: deal with them in small amounts then walk away.
• Gossiper
It can be hard to deal with gossiping people, as you can’t really control what people talk about. But gossip is bad any
environment; it leads to distrust and hurt feelings.
• How to Deal:
-If someone comes to you with a juicy bit of info, don’t bite. Lead by example.
-Shut it down quickly. Tell them its not anyone’s business. Say something positive instead. Don’t make the problem worse.
• The Grumpy Gus
Hearing someone complain day in and day out is exhausting for everyone.
• How to Deal:
-Provide constructive suggestions to their specific complaints. If they are complaining about something in particular, say,
“well, we can solve that by…”
Remind Yourself…
• Look for ways to make others feel at ease.
• Be kind.
• Be patient and be slow to anger; know that everyone is doing the best that they can.
• Feel empathy towards others. At the end of the day, we all want the same thing. We want to
be happy, we want to feel validated and accepted, and we want to feel loved.
• Keep focusing on the fact that we’re all in the same boat; we’re in this together.
• Follow the Golden Rule. The Golden Rule, as any kid could tell you, is that you should treat
others as you want them to treat you. Sit down and ask yourself how you want others to treat
you.
• Do you want people to recognize your achievements?
• Do you want people to ask about your day and to show genuine interest in your response?
• Do you want people to listen to you when you have a problem?
• Do you want people to lend you a helping hand when you’re feeling overwhelmed?

  • 5. Do your part… Be a responsible citizen! • What is your responsibility? • Be respectful – Remember we are all human beings. We are all trying to figure things out in life • Have integrity – Do the right thing. Be honest, even if others are not • Keep the peace
  • 6. 3 Key BLOCKS to positive relationships: • 1. Assuming you know what the other person’s intentions are or what they are thinking. We should do our best not to try to mind read. Everyone has their own story, and it is not the same as your story. • 2. We talk too much and listen too little. Like the saying goes, there's a reason we have two ears and only one mouth. • 3. Jealousy and good, old-fashioned envy. The “I want what they have” mentality.

Learn Skills…  Listening - Paying attention and taking into account what is being said.  Questioning - Asking to clarify or understand.  Persuading - Trying to bring others to your point of view.  Respecting - Having regard or concern for others.  Helping - Providing assistance, information or other aid.  Sharing - Taking equal responsibility with other group members.  Participating - Take part equally in the activity.
  • 8. Different Personalities… • Egomaniacs These people resist direction, they think they always know what is best and they ignore even the nicest of advice or suggestions. Not only do they think they do not need to improve, they think everyone should consider themselves lucky to be around them. • How to Deal: -Check your own ego at the door; don’t get in a power struggle.Be assertive. -Distance yourself: deal with them in small amounts then walk away. • Gossiper It can be hard to deal with gossiping people, as you can’t really control what people talk about. But gossip is bad any environment; it leads to distrust and hurt feelings. • How to Deal: -If someone comes to you with a juicy bit of info, don’t bite. Lead by example. -Shut it down quickly. Tell them its not anyone’s business. Say something positive instead. Don’t make the problem worse. • The Grumpy Gus Hearing someone complain day in and day out is exhausting for everyone. • How to Deal: -Provide constructive suggestions to their specific complaints. If they are complaining about something in particular, say, “well, we can solve that by…”

  • 10. Remind Yourself… • Look for ways to make others feel at ease. • Be kind. • Be patient and be slow to anger; know that everyone is doing the best that they can. • Feel empathy towards others. At the end of the day, we all want the same thing. We want to be happy, we want to feel validated and accepted, and we want to feel loved. • Keep focusing on the fact that we’re all in the same boat; we’re in this together. • Follow the Golden Rule. The Golden Rule, as any kid could tell you, is that you should treat others as you want them to treat you. Sit down and ask yourself how you want others to treat you. • Do you want people to recognize your achievements? • Do you want people to ask about your day and to show genuine interest in your response? • Do you want people to listen to you when you have a problem? • Do you want people to lend you a helping hand when you’re feeling overwhelmed?
