Some argue war can be justified to stop atrocities like genocide. However, others believe war should only be an absolute last resort. There are differing views on whether religiously-motivated "holy wars" can be supported, as both sides may feel God supports their cause. The rules of "lesser jihad" in Islam only permit defensive military actions to protect Islam or bring justice; offensive wars are not allowed.
