From your year 7
memories, draw a mosque.
Learning intentions:
• To describe what a
mosque looks like.
• To explain why there
are no images in a
mosque.
• To explain how
Christianity and Islam
prepare their place of
worship for prayer.
Success criteria:
• By completing a
detailed floorplan of a
mosque.
• By answering an exam
question which explains
how they prepare for
prayer.
The word “mosque” comes from the Arabic
word “masjid” which means “a place of
prostration”.
A mosque is therefore any place where a
Muslim prays, that is clean for them to pray (5
times a day).
In the UK, most mosques are just ordinary
buildings that have been converted from
other uses.
As we watch the clip,
write down the key
definitions for words
on your Mosque
floorplan, and make
notes about what
happens in the parts
of the Mosque.

You are now going to look at the symbolism of
the mosque in more detail.
Each table has information about the part of the
mosque. You need to add three key points
onto your floorplan and highlight them.
You are now going to move
around the room gaining new
knowledge.
You are going to find someone
with their hand in the air, high
five them, then swap points,
writing them onto your
floorplan.
Make sure you add everything
from the list.
1. The dome
2. The minaret
3. Prayer hall
4. The mihrab
5. Prayer mats
6. Calligraphy
Muslims are taught that joining with others for
prayer pleases Allah, and many men try to
come together for Friday prayers at the
mosque.
Joining others in worship strengthens the feeling
of the ummah (brotherhood/community of
Muslims) and enables Muslims to listen to
their religious leader preach the Friday
sermon, which helps strengthen their faith.

how members of the faith make their place of
