Cognitive Styles: ‘Holistic’ and ‘Analytical’
“Accounting for individual learning styles in not a new idea. As early as 334 BC,
Aristotle said that “each child possessed specific talents and skills” and he
noticed individual differences in young children…
…Learning styles can be defined, classified, and identified in many different
ways. Generally, they are overall patterns that provide direction to learning and
teaching. Learning Styles can also be described as a set of factors, behaviors,
and attitudes that facilitate learning for an individual in a given situation…
…Rief (1993) says that students retain:
• 10% of what they read
• 20% of what they hear
• 30% of what they see
• 50% of what they see and hear
• 70% of what they say
• 90% of what they say and do”

What is ‘holistic thinking’?
What is ‘analytical thinking?
Is there a difference between them?
‘Holistic Thinking’ and ‘Analytical Thinking’ about both ‘Cognitive Styles’.
‘Cognitive Styles’
“Cognitive styles is less about the DECISIONS that individuals actually make
and more about the PROCESSES used to make them. Individuals vary in
predictable ways along four (4) dimensions of COGNITIVE STYLE, that is
they differ in the way in which they gather and process information.
The Four Dimensions:
1. Extraversion versus Introversion
2. Sensing versus Intuition
3. Thinking versus Feeling
4. Judging versus Perceiving”

“Cognitive learning styles are the INFORMATION PROCESSING HABITS of an
individual. Unlike individual differences in ABILITIES, COGNITION describes a
person’s typical mode of:
• thinking,
• perceiving,
• remembering or
• problem solving.
Cognitive style is usually described as a personality dimension which influences:
• attitudes,
• values and
• social interaction.
For example ask yourself:
• How do you process experiences and knowledge?
• How do you organize and retain information?
• Do you need to visualize the task before starting?
• Do you approach learning and teaching sequentially or randomly?
• Do you work quickly or deliberately?
These are examples of cognitive learning style CHARACTERISTICS”
Suny Cortland: Cognitive Learning Styles
“The biological basis for cognitive learning styles is grounded in BRAIN THEORY.
Paul Broca (mid 1800’s)
Proposed the classic hemispheric dominance theory that particular
characteristics were associated with each side of the brain.
Initially, researchers believed the left side of the brain had the higher faculties
and was more dominant.
John Jackson (late 1800’s)
Was questioning the left brain dominant theory. He considered the right
brain to be the ‘neglected hemisphere’.
Wilder Penfield (early 1900’s)
Pioneered the use of direct electrical stimulation on certain areas of the
brain during surgery.
Roger Sperry (during 1950’s)
Was able to sever the ‘corpus callosum’, the nerve fibers between the two
cerebral hemispheres and study each of the hemispheres in isolation. His
‘Split Brain Theory’ research for which he received the Nobel Prize in 1981,
established that the two hemispheres of the brain process information
differently. Individuals do not learn with only one hemisphere, but there
may be a preference for one or the other processing strategies.
Characteristics of the left hemisphere include:
verbal, sequential and analytical abilities.
Dominant functions of the right hemisphere are:
global, holistic and visual-spatial.”

So… What is ‘Holistic Thinking? What is ‘Analytical Thinking?
Is there a difference between them?
“Holistic Thinking
Involves understanding a system by sensing its large-scale patterns and
reacting to them. (Looking at the ‘BIG PICTURE’ the ‘OVERALL IDEA’ and less
attentive to the details; more INTUIATIVE). The holistic person does not tear
things apart mentally to understand them. The holistic person tends to
approach a subject by trying to understand its gist or general meaning.
Analytical Thinking
Involves understanding a system by thinking about its parts and how they
work together to produce larger-scale effects. (Paying more attention to
‘THE INNER DETAILS OF A SITUATION’). eg a motor mechanic needs to
know how the components of a car function in order to ‘analyse’ the
difficulties of a car brought in for repair.”

  • 2. Learning Styles Cognitive Styles: ‘Holistic’ and ‘Analytical’ “Accounting for individual learning styles in not a new idea. As early as 334 BC, Aristotle said that “each child possessed specific talents and skills” and he noticed individual differences in young children… …Learning styles can be defined, classified, and identified in many different ways. Generally, they are overall patterns that provide direction to learning and teaching. Learning Styles can also be described as a set of factors, behaviors, and attitudes that facilitate learning for an individual in a given situation… …Rief (1993) says that students retain: • 10% of what they read • 20% of what they hear • 30% of what they see • 50% of what they see and hear • 70% of what they say • 90% of what they say and do” Suny Cortland: What are Learning Styles?
  • 3. What is ‘holistic thinking’? What is ‘analytical thinking? Is there a difference between them? ‘Holistic Thinking’ and ‘Analytical Thinking’ about both ‘Cognitive Styles’. ‘Cognitive Styles’ “Cognitive styles is less about the DECISIONS that individuals actually make and more about the PROCESSES used to make them. Individuals vary in predictable ways along four (4) dimensions of COGNITIVE STYLE, that is they differ in the way in which they gather and process information. The Four Dimensions: 1. Extraversion versus Introversion 2. Sensing versus Intuition 3. Thinking versus Feeling 4. Judging versus Perceiving” University of Rhode Island: Cognitive Style and the Myers-Briggs Type inventory
  • 4. “Cognitive learning styles are the INFORMATION PROCESSING HABITS of an individual. Unlike individual differences in ABILITIES, COGNITION describes a person’s typical mode of: • thinking, • perceiving, • remembering or • problem solving. Cognitive style is usually described as a personality dimension which influences: • attitudes, • values and • social interaction. For example ask yourself: • How do you process experiences and knowledge? • How do you organize and retain information? • Do you need to visualize the task before starting? • Do you approach learning and teaching sequentially or randomly? • Do you work quickly or deliberately?   • 5. “The biological basis for cognitive learning styles is grounded in BRAIN THEORY. Paul Broca (mid 1800’s) Proposed the classic hemispheric dominance theory that particular characteristics were associated with each side of the brain. Initially, researchers believed the left side of the brain had the higher faculties and was more dominant. John Jackson (late 1800’s) Was questioning the left brain dominant theory. He considered the right brain to be the ‘neglected hemisphere’. Wilder Penfield (early 1900’s) Pioneered the use of direct electrical stimulation on certain areas of the brain during surgery. Roger Sperry (during 1950’s) Was able to sever the ‘corpus callosum’, the nerve fibers between the two cerebral hemispheres and study each of the hemispheres in isolation. His ‘Split Brain Theory’ research for which he received the Nobel Prize in 1981, established that the two hemispheres of the brain process information differently. Individuals do not learn with only one hemisphere, but there may be a preference for one or the other processing strategies.
  • 6. Characteristics of the left hemisphere include: verbal, sequential and analytical abilities. (Looking at the ‘BIG PICTURE’ the ‘OVERALL IDEA’ and less attentive to the details; more INTUIATIVE). The holistic person does not tear things apart mentally to understand them. The holistic person tends to approach a subject by trying to understand its gist or general meaning. Analytical Thinking Involves understanding a system by thinking about its parts and how they work together to produce larger-scale effects.
