The Things They Carried the reader is introduced to First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross and the letters
he carried from his past back home. Throughout the story, readers are also introduced to other
items and supplies which were largely determined by necessity (O Brien 1) as well as items
deemed a luxury that each individual soldier carried with him for one reason or another. Pictures,
memorabilia, and personal items all acted as a gateway into a portal which would bring them
back home to the ones they loved if only for five minutes at a time. Although the pictures,
memorabilia and personal items of Cross and his soldiers alike, helped them recall back to an era
much more peaceful, the consequences of bringing the past with you can carry exceedingly
negative side effects.
Within the short story, the audience learns that Jimmy Cross carries letters and pictures from his
crush from back home, Martha. Multiple times within the story Jimmy Cross consults these pictures
and letters to distract himself from the war providing a bit of comfort in his harsh environment.
With progression through the story, readers find Jimmy Cross continuously reviewing the pictures
and letters from his dear Martha, letting his mind drift off thinking about her, distracting him from
his duties at hand. These distractions happen more and more often, eventually leading to the most
harrowing consequence. First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross s divergence from his important tasks at
hand, result in Ted Lavender being killed while under the supervision of Cross himself. This
being the key turning point for Cross, as he starts to realize his lapse in judgment and focus, had
directly cost the life of one of his soldiers. This resulting in him discovering that the pictures and
letters from Martha, he was using as hope for his future back home, and comfort from the issues at

In his book, Groundwork of the Metaphysic of Morals, Kant explores the issues of human morality,
and attempts to seek out and establish the supreme principle of morality (Kant 60). Despite
acknowledging that human beings will still most likely act morally, whether or not they have a
clear understanding of moral principles, Kant explains that a clearer understanding of moral
principles can allow individuals to fulfill their moral obligations, and keep their motivations pure.
Kant starts off, in the preface, by stating that Ancient Greek philosophy was divided into three
sciences: physics, ethics, and logic (Kant 55). Physics being the study of natural philosophy, and
the world of material objects; ethics, the study of moral philosophy, and on what basis human
beings ought to act; and logic, the study of empirical knowledge, independent of material objects.
These three fields then fall into categories of empirical or non empirical philosophy. In the
Groundwork, Kant decides to focus on pure, non empirical ethics, which he refers to as a
metaphysic of morals (Kant 56). In attempting to develop an a priori concept of morality based on
reason, as opposed to empirical observations, Kant comes to the conclusion that a free will and a

important to evaluate the validity and reliability of the measure. Intelligence, for psychometric
tests, refers to the innate overall cognitive ability. There are four versions of the Wechsler scales:
the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children4th edition (WISC IV; Wechsler, 2003) for children
aged 6 16, the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence Revised for children aged 4 6
1/2 (WPPSI R; Wechsler, 1989) the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale
4th edition (WAIS IV;
Wechsler, 2008) and the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence 2nd edition for adults (WAIS
R; Wechsler, 1981).
In order to calculate the final IQ, the raw scores are converted into a standardized scale.
Whitaker and Wood (2008) showed, through analysing the WISC III, that the standardization of
sub scores into one score (such as standardizing results to out of ten or one hundred) will
systemically result in some participants IQ being higher than it would be without the conversion
(Wechsler, 2004; Whitaker, 2010). So, the validity of the measure is compromised. This could be
