The nucleosome is the basic unit of DNA packaging in eukaryotes and consists of DNA wound around an octamer of core histone proteins. Histones are small positively charged proteins that facilitate the tight coiling of DNA around them in the nucleosome. Post-translational modifications to histones like acetylation, methylation and phosphorylation can affect nucleosome positioning and gene expression.
