Learning outcomes
•  Be able to prepare domestic and commercial work areas and protect
surrounding areas.
•  Be able to prepare and apply waterborne and solventborne coatings
by brush and roller to complex areas in line with manufacturers'
instructions.
•  Be able to clean, maintain and store brushes and rollers in line with
manufacturers' instructions.
•  Be able to store materials in accordance with COSHH data sheets.

Health and Safety legislation
HASAWA 1974 (Umbrella of regulations)
There are a number of special regulations that come under this large
umbrella of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. The legal
requirements affect the employer but there are items of legislation that
affect the employee as well.
Discuss with your tutor and group the main Health and Safety
Regulations for painting and decorating.

Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
The Health and Safety at Work Act is like an umbrella – it covers all
other Health and Safety legislation such as:
•  Work at Height Regulations (2005)
•  Manual Handling Operations Regulations (1992)
•  Provision and use of Work Equipment Regulations (1998)
•  Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations (2002)
•  Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (2002)
•  Volatile Organic Compounds in Paints, Varnishes and Vehicle
Refinishing Products Regulations (2005)

Personal safety
Discuss with your peers the different types of tasks carried out in the
painting and decorating workshop and the various rules and
regulations that apply to the work area.
Discuss the importance of safety. Consider the following and make
your own notes:
•  PPE
•  Substances
•  Materials
•  Access equipment
•  Skin, inhalation, ingestion
On completion compare notes with your tutor and group.

Healthy working environment
It is important to maintain a healthy working environment to prevent or
reduce the following:
•  Slip, trips and falls
•  Diseases
•  Burns
•  Cuts and abrasions etc
Give an example of how slips, trips and falls can occur in the workshop
and how can they be prevented or reduced.
Give an example of how dermatitis can be caused and what control
measures you would implement to reduce the risks.
Discuss your findings with your tutor and group.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Employers have duties concerning the provision and use of
personal protective equipment (PPE).
The regulations also require that PPE is:
1.  Correctly assessed before use to make sure it is fit for purpose.
2.  Maintained and stored correctly.
3.  Provided with instructions on how to use it safely.
4.  Used correctly by employees.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Hazards and types of PPE
Eyes
Hazards: chemical or metal splash, dust, projectiles, gas
and vapour, radiation.
Options: safety spectacles, goggles, face shields, visors.
Head
Hazards: impact from falling or flying objects, risk of head
bumping, hair entanglement.
Options: range of helmets, hard hats and bump caps.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Breathing
Hazards: dust, vapour, gas, oxygen-deficient atmospheres.
Options: disposable filtering face piece or respirator, half- or full-face
respirators, air-fed helmets, breathing apparatus.
Protecting the body
Hazards: temperature extremes, adverse weather, chemical or metal
splash, spray from pressure leaks or spray guns, impact or penetration,
contaminated dust, excessive wear or entanglement of own clothing.
Options: face shields (half or full face), respirators, gauntlets, cut-
resistant sleeves, insulated jacket, body suits, safety shoes and
goggles, high visibility vest.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Hands and arms
Hazards: abrasion, temperature extremes, cuts and punctures, impact,
chemicals, electric shock, skin infection, disease or contamination.
Options: gloves, gauntlets, mitts, wrist-cuffs, armlets.
Feet and legs
Hazards: wet, electrostatic build-up, slipping, cuts and punctures,
falling objects, metal and chemical splash, abrasion.
Options: safety boots and shoes with protective toe caps and
penetration-resistant mid-sole, gaiters, leggings, spats.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Discuss with your tutor and group your workshop procedure for
identifying faulty or damaged products, tools and equipment.
Make a list and discuss your results.
How can products, tools and equipment be maintained within the
limits of your own job role?
Discuss your results.
Discuss with your tutor and group the importance of maintaining
products, tools and equipment levels in the workshop and who to
report low levels to.

Learning outcomes •  Be able to prepare domestic and commercial work areas and protect surrounding areas. •  Be able to prepare and apply waterborne and solventborne coatings by brush and roller to complex areas in line with manufacturers' instructions. •  Be able to clean, maintain and store brushes and rollers in line with manufacturers' instructions. •  Be able to store materials in accordance with COSHH data sheets.

Health and Safety legislation HASAWA 1974 (Umbrella of regulations) There are a number of special regulations that come under this large umbrella of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. The legal requirements affect the employer but there are items of legislation that affect the employee as well. Discuss with your tutor and group the main Health and Safety Regulations for painting and decorating.

Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 The Health and Safety at Work Act is like an umbrella – it covers all other Health and Safety legislation such as: •  Work at Height Regulations (2005) •  Manual Handling Operations Regulations (1992) •  Provision and use of Work Equipment Regulations (1998) •  Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations (2002) •  Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (2002) •  Volatile Organic Compounds in Paints, Varnishes and Vehicle Refinishing Products Regulations (2005) Health and Safety legislation (cont)

Personal safety Discuss with your peers the different types of tasks carried out in the painting and decorating workshop and the various rules and regulations that apply to the work area. Discuss the importance of safety. Consider the following and make your own notes: •  PPE •  Substances •  Materials •  Access equipment •  Skin, inhalation, ingestion On completion compare notes with your tutor and group.

Healthy working environment It is important to maintain a healthy working environment to prevent or reduce the following: •  Slip, trips and falls •  Diseases •  Burns •  Cuts and abrasions etc Give an example of how slips, trips and falls can occur in the workshop and how can they be prevented or reduced. Give an example of how dermatitis can be caused and what control measures you would implement to reduce the risks. Discuss your findings with your tutor and group.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Employers have duties concerning the provision and use of personal protective equipment (PPE). The regulations also require that PPE is: 1.  Correctly assessed before use to make sure it is fit for purpose. 2.  Maintained and stored correctly. 3.  Provided with instructions on how to use it safely. 4.  Used correctly by employees.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Hazards and types of PPE Eyes Hazards: chemical or metal splash, dust, projectiles, gas and vapour, radiation. Options: safety spectacles, goggles, face shields, visors. Head Hazards: impact from falling or flying objects, risk of head bumping, hair entanglement. Options: range of helmets, hard hats and bump caps.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Breathing Hazards: dust, vapour, gas, oxygen-deficient atmospheres. Options: disposable filtering face piece or respirator, half- or full-face respirators, air-fed helmets, breathing apparatus. Protecting the body Hazards: temperature extremes, adverse weather, chemical or metal splash, spray from pressure leaks or spray guns, impact or penetration, contaminated dust, excessive wear or entanglement of own clothing. Options: face shields (half or full face), respirators, gauntlets, cut- resistant sleeves, insulated jacket, body suits, safety shoes and goggles, high visibility vest.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Hands and arms Hazards: abrasion, temperature extremes, cuts and punctures, impact, chemicals, electric shock, skin infection, disease or contamination. Options: gloves, gauntlets, mitts, wrist-cuffs, armlets. Feet and legs Hazards: wet, electrostatic build-up, slipping, cuts and punctures, falling objects, metal and chemical splash, abrasion. Options: safety boots and shoes with protective toe caps and penetration-resistant mid-sole, gaiters, leggings, spats.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Discuss with your tutor and group your workshop procedure for identifying faulty or damaged products, tools and equipment. Make a list and discuss your results. How can products, tools and equipment be maintained within the limits of your own job role? Discuss your results. Discuss with your tutor and group the importance of maintaining products, tools and equipment levels in the workshop and who to report low levels to.
