Health and safety legislation
Discuss with your tutor and group the main health and safety
regulations for construction.
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 is like an umbrella. It covers
all other health and safety legislation, whether it existed before 1974 or
has been introduced since.

Health and safety legislation continued
There are a great number of special regulations that come under this
large umbrella of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
A lot of the legal requirements affect the employer, but there are items
of legislation that affect the employee as well.
The following slide lists the main regulations that will affect you in the
construction industry.

• The Manual Handling Operations Regulations

• The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations
(COSHH)
• The Electricity at Work Regulations
• Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences
Regulations (RIDDOR)

Maintaining a safe working environment
The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations require the employer to provide
a safe working environment for employees and customers. It is the responsibility of all at
work to help maintain a safe and healthy working environment.
Discuss with your tutor how these regulations affect the construction environment and
how the employee can support health and safety.
Consider the following and make your own notes:
• workshop temperature
• sanitary conveniences
• washing facilities
• rest area
• drinking water
• traffic route through the site.

Tidying and maintaining the work area
It is important to maintain the work area. As part of your job, you will be
involved in helping to:
• tidy up the work area on completion
• clean tools and equipment
• maintain tools and equipment
• store materials, tools and equipment
• maintain hygiene and tidiness of the work area.
Think of a time when you have been very unimpressed when on site.
Think about the things that you consider to make a good professional
image and impact on clients.
This activity can be done in groups or individually.

Tidying and maintaining the work area continued
Working in pairs or small groups, discuss the following:
• how to identify faulty or damaged products, tools and equipment, and
what the procedure should be
• how products, tools and equipment can be maintained within the
limits of your own job role
• the importance of maintaining tools and equipment, and who you
should report any faults to.
Make notes and be prepared to discuss your ideas with the whole
group.

Tidying and maintaining the work area continued
Make a list of the different materials that may be on the site and need to
be checked and discuss your results.
Consider the maintenance of the site regarding tidiness and hygiene,
and make a list of what needs to be carried out.
