Commercial and domestic
Before we can determine the preparation of work areas we need to
consider whether it is a commercial property or a domestic dwelling.
Discuss in groups the difference between a commercial property
and a domestic dwelling.

Consideration
• Before you begin a decorating task, it is best if the room is
completely clear. If all furniture and other items are removed it will
make your job easier and safer, and it will prevent damage to the
client's property.
• In some cases there will be items that cannot be removed. These
items will have to be protected in order to prevent damage and a
costly clean-up bill/replacement charge.
Discussion
What will the impact be on a business if there are damages to areas
such as spillages, splashes to carpets, breakages etc?

Components
Discuss which items and components should be removed or
protected from damage.
Room furniture, floor/carpets, door and window furniture, wall-mounted
fixtures and fittings, television, media, telephones, curtains, curtain rail,
blinds tables etc.

Considerations (domestic)
Removing, loosening or covering components needs consideration
It will prove difficult for an operative to remove heavy items such as
sofas, beds and wardrobes.
What would the recommendations be to protect these items?
• Move to the centre of the room – this enables the operative to work
around the items.
• Cover items with the appropriate protective coverings.
These will depend on the work being carried out.

Considerations (domestic)
Give examples of the types of tasks and the recommended
protection method
• Wallpaper stripping (excessive water)
• Paint removal (flaking paints)
• Abrading (dust)
What recommendations would you consider for the removal of
fragile items?
Protect them with wrapping, box and label – this will aid you when you
reinstate the room.
What would you need to discuss with the customer?
Obtain permission to relocate the items, explain the item's location,
entry times etc.

Protective sheeting
Cotton twill dust sheets,
manufactured from soft cotton,
have a tight weave creating an
excellent barrier to dust.
Laminated dust sheets combine a cotton twill dust
sheet with a laminated plastic backing offering
double protection from spillages and preventing
drips seeping through to the surface.
Dust sheets manufactured for stairs have
tight weaves that create a barrier to dust.

Protective covers
Disposable low-density polythene dust
sheets are used to protect floors and static
furniture during wet processes. They are
also used for protecting fragile items such
as plants, flowers and garden ornaments.
Tarpaulins are heavy duty waterproof
protective covers used for protecting
exterior areas from splashes and debris.

Considerations (commercial)
What would you need to consider during the application of paints
in a commercial property?
Public access to premises, lighting, climate/weather, temperature,
ventilation, workstations, machinery, equipment, furniture.
Discuss protection methods
• Plastic curtains – allows clients to carry out their daily tasks
• Barriers
• Warning signs

Protecting commercial properties
Industrial curtains protect people and
property from:
• Dust and airborne particulates
• Paint over spray
• Water spray or mist
• Chemical spray or mist
Pedestrian barriers can be used to ensure the public is
directed safely in or around areas of works, or to ensure
traffic is aware of works by providing a clear walkway
away from any danger.
Warning signs must be displayed to warn people to be
careful or take precautions where hazards exist – for
example wet paint, debris, wet floors.
