This document discusses happiness and ways leaders can increase their own and their employees' happiness. It defines happiness and outlines several scientifically proven strategies to boost happiness, including savoring moments, expressing gratitude, kindness, social connections, managing time well, meditation, sleep, and exercise. The document notes that while life events only account for 10% of happiness, our thoughts and actions determine 40% and that managers can positively or negatively influence the emotions and happiness of their employees, even when not directly interacting with them.

The science of happiness
"I'll be happy once <I get this done/I get a promotion/I change job/I buy a new car/etc >". How many times have you said something like this? We think happiness comes from success, but science has proven that it's the other way around: being happy makes us successful.
Happiness has huge benefits on most aspects of our lives, including the professional one.
So how can we be happy? Well, turns out we can quite easily "trick" our brain into being happy(er). Let me tell you how, and how I apply these concepts in my day to day work with my team

It's obvious that happiness plays a key role in our lives. A study of over 250,000 people found that happiness leads to many positive benefits, including: higher income, more productivity, higher energy, better relationships, and better health.
Surprisingly, it's not success that causes happiness, but being happy that tends to lead to success. Studies have identified three common factors that can increase our happiness at work—and in life.
Autonomy
Employees with autonomy—whether managing their own time or deciding what they work on and when—have greater job satisfaction and report more fulfilling lives.
People with high income but little autonomy are usually much less happy than people with low income but control over what they do.
Finding ways to control your work with time-management skills and productivity tools can bring peace to your schedule and happiness to your job.
Purpose
We want to feel that we matter and that we make a difference. Data from 11,000 U.S. workers showed that the strongest predictor of meaningfulness at work was the belief that the job had a positive impact on others.
Finding meaning in what you do gives longterm inner satisfaction.
Mastery
One common habit of people who are happy at work is that they identify their strengths and skills and are committed to continuously improving as a lifetime goal.
Acquiring a new skill or improving one you already have is easier than ever thanks to on-demand elearning sites. For example, you can learn: software, leadership, finance, and more whenever and wherever you like and learn from top instructors who meet you where you’re at—beginner, advanced, or anywhere in between—to boost your confidence, keep you happy, and get the job done!
lynda.com and other elearning platforms aid mastery by reproducing the best teacher experiences. Great teachers offer knowledge, but also much more: motivation, confidence, and a boost of positivity—all of which really make learning stick!

Satisfaction may appear to be highly subjective, but new MRG data reveals patterns in the way highly satisfied individuals approach the world. By discovering where satisfied (and dissatisfied) individuals focus their energy, we can uncover and address the root causes of deep dissatisfaction – which, whether it’s personal, professional, or both, can be a barrier to growth.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Thank you
The time to be happy is now.
Editor's Notes
What happiness is and what happiness isn’t
What makes us happy, what doesn’t and why
We’ll practice some techniques that are scientifically proven to make us happier. We’ll argue that happiness isn’t dependent on external factors as much as we think - happiness is something that we do.
Three reasons why I want to talk about it:
We know more about happiness than ever before. Traditional psychology vs positive psychology. Neuroscience. Happiness is no longer a fluffy subject – yet we continue to rely on our intuitions which are often wrong.
At work we often confuse happiness and achievement. Work hard – achieve success – be happy
It’s good for anybody to be happy. But leaders by definition have a significant effect on others and have an obligation to affect them positively.
I manage 5 web developers. 5 happy web developers – I would like to say one day.
Professor Laurie Santos taught "Psychology and the Good Life" first in spring 2018 in response to concerning levels of student depression, anxiety, and stress. It became the most popular class in Yale's history and garnered national and international media attention.
If you’re geeky like me – all the research is there
Copenhagen
The definition commonly used by researchers is
A happy person often experiences positive emotions and rarely (but not never) negative emotions
What happiness is not.
One of the biggest misunderstandings of happiness is that we should constantly aim to be happy. This is an impossible goal. Faking happiness makes us less happy and more stressed.
Happiness at work – Nordic countries – but not in French, Spanish or German. Japanese – karoshi – death from overwork.
It is not work satisfaction.
The only productivity boost associated with experiencing negative emotions is related to tedious tasks (cleaning)
Don’t underestimate the effect you have on people when you walk into the office
Happy leadership IS NOT faking happiness or demanding that everyone be happy at all times.
I want to show you this optical illusion in order to illustrate that knowing is not half the battle
Which of the horizontal lines appears longer
2 points:
1) We can’t always trust our intuition. It appears that what we are particularly not very good at is predicting our feelings. Events (unlike other species) – yes, we can plan and predict THINGS, but not feelings. In relation to happiness a lot of the things that we think will make us happy doesn’t make us as happy as we think.
2) Knowing is not half the battle when it comes to establishing new habits, putting things into practice. This is why we get so frustrated with training courses – some new info but no real change to how we do things. Managing difficult conversations was different – we practiced. So we’ll do some of that today – to REALLY benefit you have to do your homework, to put the work in. 10 weeks course.
If you were serious about making this change you start with your baseline happiness, then at the end of 10 weeks course compare.
How many people have taken it? Over 4?
“It was right then that I started thinking about Thomas Jefferson on the Declaration of Independence and the part about our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And I remember thinking how did he know to put the pursuit part in there? That maybe happiness is something that we can only pursue and maybe we can actually never have it. No matter what. How did he know that?” – Chris Gardner
