Andy Warhol Pop Art Era
Andy Warhol , was one of the most iconic painters to date. Known for his unconventional takes on
images varying from Marilyn Monroe to soup cans, his love of bright colors and bold patterns brought
these images to life and helped pave his way as a major figure in the pop art movement. His work
really set the tone of the Pop Art Era. It pulled in a lot of pop culture and always made some kind of
statement, whether noticeable or not contrary to the previous generation. For example, when Andy
was discussing his Campbell s Soup Cans painting he said I used to drink it. I used to have the same
lunch every day, for 20 years, I guess, the same thing over and over again. Which can really tell you
how times were back then, he was a child of poverty just like many people in that time period.
His parents were immigrants to the United States, Pavol and Julia Warhola by way of the Czech
Republic, on August 6, 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was one of three sons, his brothers
names , John and Pavol Warhola. Around the age of 8 Andy was un fortunately diagnosed with Chorea
that left him to live in the bed. To soothe his boredom his mother gave him his first drawing lessons.
So you could kind of say it was a bittersweet occurrence that he contracted the Chorea illness ,
because it sparked his real passion for art. However a few years later in ... Show more content on

For this technique Andy took two pieces of paper , laid them next to each other and attached them by a
piece of tape that acted as a hinge. Then he drew on the right sided sheet, and before the ink dried he
lifted it up and folded it down on top of the left hand sheet. The blotted line was a smudged mirror
image of the original line he had drawn. He liked the look it gave and the idea that his hand had not
actually drawn the line onto to the paper that actually contained the final

Buddhist Art Of The Han Dynasty
During the Han Dynasty, first Buddhist missionaries had come to China. It was only gradually felt in
the beginning, as it was brought into a developing society. As Buddhist narratives, and traditions of
iconography enriched China, it opened up new possibilities for the artistic culture of China.
Eventually, Buddhist temples became the model for all Chinese temples, Taoist and Confucian. Scrolls
of silk and paper replaced bamboo slips for writing. The scrolls were joined by hanging scrolls which
became the most famous format for painting. With this new wave of painting styles, Buddhist
paintings and figures also grew in great numbers. These changes became more prominent as time went
on, and from the big changes they have brought, it can be said that Buddhism left a huge imprint on
the Chinese Art. Founded in the sixth century BCE, Buddhism soon began expanding northwards from
the foothills of the Himalayas. In the third century BCE, Buddhism was dispersed by missionaries
across Central Asia from within India, where it remained dominant for about a thousand years. When
it was brought into China, new Buddhist monks emerged. Some of them went onto become valued as
palace advisors. This transmission of Buddhism also occurred with the help of the Silk Road. The Silk
Road was an ancient trade route linking the West to China. Runs from the Mediterranean coast to
Central Asia, south to India, or east through mountains and bleak deserts to, present day Xi an, in
China. People

Or they are similar enough to the brain s natural chemical messengers that they trick brain receptors
into activating nerve cells. Stimulants such as cocaine and methamphetamines cause the neurons to
release too much of the neurotransmitters, causing the sensation users describe as the brain racing.
And, in one way or another, almost all drugs over stimulate the pleasure center of the brain, flooding it
with the neurotransmitter dopamine. This produces euphoria, and the heightened pleasure can be so
compelling that the brain wants that feeling back again and again. Unfortunately, with repeated use of
a drug, the brain becomes accustomed to the dopamine surges by producing less of it. So the user has
to take more of the drug to feel the same pleasure the phenomenon known as tolerance. There are
several psychological factors that exist in the adolescent with substance and chemical dependency
disorders. The moods of these adolescents are not stable and they are more prone to depression. They
have various emotional and behavioral difficulties. Adolescents with these disorders also tend to have
learning disabilities and psychiatric disturbances. (Jorgenson and Salwen, 2008) According to the
research of Terry Brown, Psychological dependence for long term users is more likely; some have
mental health problems such as confusion, sleep disorder depression and paranoia.

HBS Case Innovation and Collaboration at Merrill Lynch
In a rapidly changing world, organizations need to continually identify new opportunities beyond
existing competencies if they are to survive and prosper. Customers also increasingly want customized
products. Customer service has become a hygiene factor and customer loyalty is now being driven by
faster innovation, rapid concept to market and product co creation. This has led to the extension of the
collaboration paradigm to customer facing functions in the supply chain, namely the product design
and prototyping phase. Collaboration is becoming a new and important source of competitive

To achieve the further successful innovation and collaboration, there are many important things
Browning as the director of the research department should have thought about.
As a leader for change, Browning should set the theme by communicating inspiring visions, which
provide a picture of the future combining poetry and prose, imagination and pragmatism, drawing on
destination, dream, prize, target, message, and first step. So, first, as a leader Browing must be
secure about team s charter, mission, goals and objectives to team members. And employees must
believe a certain level of individual effort will lead to achieving the corporation s standards of
performance. So Browing should set stretch goals which they energize people. And Browing must
confront the key questions that must be answered and then communicate the inherent truth that
inspires. The communication of that inspiring vision is arguably the indispensable condition. So For
this, he should launch internal website for his innovative project and this website will help team
members expedite project s vision communication as well as timely information access. To be
specific, formally, the analysts can share information about each sector regularly through email, e

Wages of Crime by R. T Naylor
Introduction:
Wages of Crime: Black Markets, Illegal Finance, and the Underworld Economy is a book by R. T.
Naylor based on his views of organized crime and the government s stance and involvement. Naylor
writes from a mostly democratic point of view and presents his thesis quite clearly. Naylor s thesis in
this book is that organized crime is a convenient myth handed to society by the government. In this
book Naylor sets up four important concepts: first on the black market operations of guerrilla groups,
second on the modern arms market, then on money laundering, and finally the underworld trade in
gold. Throughout the book he talks about the critique of the public perceptions of organized crime, a
discussion of anti money laundering policies, and an analysis of terrorist financing.
Summery
At the start of his second chapter Naylor sets up the difference between the motives of insurgent
groups versus criminal groups. Naylor claims Criminals commit economic crimes to make money.
(pg. 45) and that is where motivation ends for them. The difference between insurgent groups is,
money is merely a tool one that is necessary but not sufficient to achieve. Like the formally
constituted governments they challenge, insurgent groups have political programs...they have control
over armed forces, and they directly compete with the state for territory, population, and resources.
(pg. 45) A parallel economy is then created by the guerrilla groups to supply the population with what

Aristotle s Philosophy On The View Of Friendship
Aristotle was an ancient Greek philosopher. Aristotle s philosophy was his logical concept. Aristotle s
objective was to come up with a universal process of reasoning that would allow man to learn every
imaginable thing about reality. He wrote on a vast amount of subjects during his lifetime, such as
biology, chemistry, physics, ethics and logic. Aristotle wrote a book called, Nicomachean Ethics. This
book describes the view of friendship. He also describes three different type of friendship, which in
reality is exactly how friendship is in today society. The question while reading this information is
what is friendship in Aristotle point of view? Aristotle believes that there are three different kinds of
friendship; that of utility, friendship of pleasure, and virtuous friendship. In his book he describe
exactly what each type of friendship really is. Friendship that is of utility is where both people derive
some benefit from each other. Is like saying that these people are friends from each other by gaining
something else from the other. They are not friends for the good of it; they are friends because there
are benefits coming from them. Aristotle describes a friendship of utility as narrow, easily dissolved or
for the old. He views them as such because this type of friendship is easily broken and based on
something that is brought to the relationship by the other person. Most of the people that have this
type of friendship are the young people. They do not know

Casablanca as Political Propaganda Essay
Casablanca debuted in 1942, shortly following the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the United States
entrance into World War Two, although there was plenty of anti Nazism sentiment, the movie fueled
these feelings. There is pro Allied forces propaganda to support the war, from the scene with La
Marseillaise, to the characters of Renault and Rick, and to the last scene. Although the majority of the
French patriots were elated to sing their national anthem, it created tension with the German soldiers
who imposed their patriotic songs on the crowd, representing the imposition of Germany on France
during the war. Captain Louis Renault, who tries to placate who he believes will be the winning side,
seems flimsy when compared to Rick, the firm ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The anthem stirs up the patriotism in the people as they slowly join the fight, all of which is happening
under the roof of an American man?s cafà . Without the American cafà , the French patriots would
not have been able to fight and embarrass the Germans with the song, so with American equipment,
the French are able to fight back. Variety Magazine in 1942 describes the film as having, ?splendid
anti Axis propaganda, particularly inasmuch as the propaganda is strictly a by product of the principal
action and contributes to it instead of getting in the way? It is just another facet of the variety of
moods, action, suspense, comedy and drama that makes ?Casablanca? a number one entry at the box
office? (variety). This message is important for American viewers especially because it emphasizes the
necessity of the Americans in the war efforts and their vital role.
The characters in Casablanca all contribute to the political allegory, for example Rick is strong and
isolated like America, Strasser is the typical Nazi general representing Germany, and Renault is
compliant with the Germans like France. American Rick and European Louis look out for each other s
interests throughout the film, just as America and Western Europe did once the United States entered
the war. Renault had to obey and follow the Strasser?s demands until he had leverage and the
knowledge that he could defeat or overcome

Brave New World And Brave New World
The 1920 s and the 1930 s brought about many changes in the world such as financial fluctuations and
advancements in technology. The novel Brave New World , by Aldous
Huxley, and the short story There Will Come Soft Rains , by Ray Bradbury, gives an excellent
presentation of futuristic elements and how world climate at the time affected how the author
perceived the future. Both of these stories paint a picture of a world where technology has advanced to
the point that it has negatively affected mankind. Using new historicism, this paper will explore the
different ideas and thoughts of the authors and how they got influenced by the historical events
happening in their time as well as the developing technologies. This paper will also explore how the
two stories, even though written on different decades, are very similar in nature through their views,
themes, and the ultimate effect on society.
Huxley writes the novel Brave New World in 1931 around the time technology rapidly replaced
workers jobs and made unemployment rates increase. This caused many people to take any job they
could get such as factory work. In the novel, Aldous Huxley describes a future world where every
single person is working in a factory and doesn t have a say rather or not they want to work there. The
novel shows Huxley sees the future as alienated and ruled by a God who controls every aspect of
people s lives. During this time Huxley writes his novel, the

contrasts. There is one similarity in that when they really believe something, they are passionate about
their cause.

Science Of Economics By Neuroscientist Marco Iacaboni
4. Mirror neurons are a major component in brain functioning, and thus it gives them a primary role in
pscyho economic reasoning. Their integral nature in decision making produces various outlying
effects like contagion and feeds into instinctual behaviors such as confidence. The neurons, which
were popularized within the field of economics by neuroscientist Marco Iacaboni, have since played a
big role in discerning group dynamics. Mirror neurons themselves are a pivotal factor in bridging
perception and action as they help prep responses. As discovered by four Italian scientists in Parma,
Italy, mirror neurons fire as a function of perception, but it may not lead to any discernable action. Put
more straightforward, mirror neurons are a set of neurons that produce a mirror like firing sequence in
response to a stimulus, but they do not necessarily cause any physical motor reaction. The scientists
who first proposed this phenomenon showed that neurons present in the premotor cortex of macaque
monkeys showed near parallel bursts of activity between a perception and actual execution of a
particular task, in this case grasping an object. Mirror neurons are unique as they are universal in the
brain. They mirror actions, emotions, and even potentially sentiments. Moreover, Iacaboni even went
as far to suggest they serve as the basis for complex states such as morality. In this sense mirror
neurons have the potential to be major factors within group dynamics as they can

This all began when Britain approved levies on its American settlements to help pay the upholding of

It is deliverance which does not deliver . (Emerson)Ralph Waldo Emerson s Self Reliance speaks
about relying on yourself to live the best life you can. He regrets having a lot to say but regretting not
saying any of it and now he only can wonder what would have happened. In Ralph Waldo Emerson s
Self Reliance and in Rascal Flatts song What Hurts the Most it proves that you can t do things halfway
in life because success means not giving up and following your dreams which leads to happiness,
individuality, and satisfaction with your life. This is shown by Emerson s thoughts about working

The Tripartite Secondary School System
Introduction To Social Policy (AC1, AC2, AC4.2) The tripartite secondary school system was
introduced to society following the 1944 Education Act, this act divided schooling into primary and
secondary levels whilst increasing the school leaving age to 15. During the same year, however, the
secondary level of schooling was further divided into 3 categories grammar, technical and modern.
Prior to this act there was no segregation of schooling in place, known as elementary schooling.
Grammar schools were intended to schools based around academia, technical schools were intended to
be based around science and technical schooling and modern schools were intended to be consistent
with general schooling and education. The secondary schools children attended was not down to
individual choice but rather an IQ test, the 11+ test. The 11+ test was founded by Cyril Burt on the
understanding that intelligence was inherited, there was proof into Burt s theory and it was identified
that girls IQ level was often higher. The test was fixed to minimise the girls scores and allow only
20% to meet the requirements for the grammar schools. However this act was not successful as
modern and grammar schools were equal in society and science was taught in grammar schools as
opposed to technical schools, thus very few technical schools were instituted. By 1952 predominantly
people were in modern schools, followed by grammar and only 5% in technical schools so the system
proposed had failed to

The Theory Of Supply And Demand
When an individual wants a good or service they will go wherever they need to get that good or
service that they want. You never really think how it gets there or why there isn t any left. When you
go to the store to buy groceries and the price has went up you tend to get upset. Although, when they
go down you think to yourself that you better stock up. All of these changes occur because of demand
and supply. Demand and supply are the key components for the economy. Kirzner (2000) states in his
article: The theory of supply and demand is recognized almost universally as the first step toward
understanding how market prices are determined and the way in which these prices help shape
production and consumption decisions the decisions that make up not shapes the prices for production
and consumption of goods and services.
Demand
According to Moffatt Demand is the relationship between the quantity of a good or service consumers
will purchase and the price charged for that good . It is the want or need for a good or service to be
produced. The amount of a good at a certain price that an individual is willing to buy is called quantity
demand. Prices fluctuate for many reasons. When a price of a good or service goes up or down it is
called law of demand. If the price rises, the quantity demanded goes down. If the price goes down, the
quantity demanded goes up. This being that everything else is equal. Also known as ceterius paribus.
The two have an inverse effect on

Poverty On Children Essay
Poverty
Poverty is a chronic issue not just within the United States but throughout the whole world, but one
thing that people tend to overlook is the effect that poverty has on childhood. Many children grow up
in poverty and the effects can last for a life time. For many of these kids who grow up in these
conditions the effects include poor health, a high risk for teen pregnancy, and the lack of an education.
Poor health is a direct of effect of poverty, children with families with no money or that live in a
country that cannot provide the right kind of services do not have access to adequate medical
treatment, Psychological research has demonstrated that living in poverty has a wide range of negative
effects on the physical and mental health and wellbeing of our nation s children. Poverty impacts
children within their various contexts at home, in school, and in their neighborhoods and communities
. If a child does not have the money it is impossible to get the necessary care that it needs, I witnessed
this first hand: back when I lived in Africa I wasn t much older than 3 or 4, I used to have a younger
brother who got sick and it wasn t even something very serious it was just a minor cold that could
have been easily treated but thanks to lack of hospitals and the lack of money in our household the
minor cold become very serious and I watched as my younger brother slowly died in my mother s
arms. Furthermore, the APA (the American psychological association) found that

Marriage in Jane Austen´s Pride and Prejudice
Throughout the history of literature there have been many connections made between writers and their
reoccurring styles of writing found in each of their literary works. Jane Austen is only one example of
this type of author who exemplifies a style of repetition by using repetitious themes. Theme is a very
important literary element in any piece of literature. Themes teach the reader a life lesson, often times
lending advice or a point of view. In Jane Austen s novel, Pride and Prejudice, she uses themes which
can also be found in other pieces of literature written by Austen. These themes deal with the subjects
of; marriage, good breeding and appearances, social rank and morals, and happiness. In the novel

THE EFFECTS OF MEMORY IMPROVEMENT BY SAYING WORDS ALOUD Abstract This
experiment proposes to study the effects of memory improvement by reciting and saying the words
out loud to oneself. Participants will be assigned to either two different types of conditions and will
then be required to recall the information of words as best as they can. It is assumed that a higher level
of generating the targeted words into memory is improved when readers say the words out loud to
themselves. Thus, the hypothesis concluded is that people who say words out loud after reading them

However, recent research done by Reynolds amp; Besner (2008) suggests that contrary to the view
that by vocalizing words out loud is entirely an automatic memory encoding, it in fact requires some
form of attention. Previous research was investigated further where participants were exposed to
reading lexicon and pseudo homophones aloud that required the use of central attention. In research
done by Blais amp; Besner (2007), repetition of words of lexical representations suggests longer
persistence in the early memory processing, as cited by Reynolds amp; Malley (2008). It was
discussed earlier that possibly the mere action of vocalizing words for memory recall will encourage
memory improvement at a higher level, thus making a person to be able to better retrieve previous
information if need be (Macleod et al., 2010). In another study, Kappel, Harfard, Burns amp;
Anderson, (1973) gave another possible explanation on the advantage of reading words out loud,
indicating that serial voiced recall were found to be superior for the later positions, and these results
replicates previous experiments done by Murray (1966) and Conrad amp; Hull (1968). However,
Kappel et al., (1973) proposed that the results reported suggest that differences in participants level of

A Review Of The Story Of A Odyssey
Estefane Sanchez Homeroom 306 September Ulysses and his men were sailing once again through the
seas without any coordinates as to where they were heading too. Staring over the ships and his men he
saw them rowing without motivation as if they were giving up on returning home to their families or
loved ones. It surprised him because for ten years that was the only thing they wanted to leave Troy
and return to their homes in the Greek Islands but they all looked wretched and starved; lifeless. He
started walking in between his men going through the rows they were sitted in, looking at them gaze
down at him not making any contact until he he got to the last row. One of his men stood up from the
bench he was sitting on looked ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The two men tied his arms with rope and helped him stand up on his feet and made him walk, until
they were standing in front of the pole and tied him up against it. Ulysses was standing tall staring at
his men who he thought would have never gone against him, but now he was stuck looking at them as
they commanded each other not knowing what to do. Changing courses every so often not knowing
where to head but that all they knew was that they wanted to reach land. He started shouting curses at
them, scratching at the ropes breaking his nails that he started bleeding, he was very angry, red was
starting to invade his vision he couldn t see clear anymore, he started screaming nonsenses and he was
getting light headed until his eyelids closed shut and it was all dark. The men had stopped changing
courses and were letting the waves guide them and at last they saw land. They headed toward the
island it took them a while to get to land but it was all worth it for them. Settling the ships on the edge
of the island they threw themselves of the ships to land on the sand staring up at the blue sky some
looking up at the trees and bushes.Coconuts were dangling from the tall brown and green trees and
some were on the floor, beautiful red roses and white flowers sprouting and blueberries and
raspberries were seen on bushes ready for them to collect. Some of the men were climbing

Samuel Coleridge and Edgar Allan Poe Poems
Symbols can be a very powerful thing. They can completely transform texts and make them more
powerful and significant. Symbols are things in a text that represent other things or have different
meanings. There are two different poems that contain similar symbols: The Rime of the Ancient
Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and The Raven, by Edgar Allan Poe. The Rime of the Ancient
Mariner is A poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge about an old sailor who is compelled to tell strangers
about the supernatural adventures that befell him at sea after he killed an albatross, a friendly sea bird.
(Kett, Joseph F.).The old mariner killed an albatross, a seabird, and was cursed for disrespecting
nature and watched his entire crew die of starvation and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another difference they have in appearance is how a raven has a more sinister looking appearance
compared to the albatross. The raven, as mentioned before is jet black, and has beady black eyes with
sharp black talons. It is a creepy bird that would appear in horror films and at funerals. The albatross
on the other hand is a more magnificent and cheerful looking bird. It is a white bird which is a more
calming color compared to black, and it is known to be a sign of good luck. Furthermore, the actions
of each bird from The Rime of an Ancient Mariner and The Raven have dissimilar roles and actions in
each poem. First off, the albatross from The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is a huge symbol of good
omens and when it gets killed by the Mariner, it instantly brings a curse among the crew or the ship
which is described by Kennedy Warne, Coleridge s Rime of the Ancient Mariner gave the albatross its
reputation as a good omen that should be respected. (Warne, Kennedy). However, the albatross doesn t
really have any direct actions; it just mainly causes the turmoil by being killed. The raven from Edgar
Allan Poe s The Raven is completely different because it does have its own actions unlike the
albatross. The raven continuously repeats the word nevermore to the old man after flying in the
window onto the man s statue which is shown in the following lines, Tell me what thy

Worst Time In My Life
A time in my life were an incident occurred that had had a major impact on me was this summer. This
summer was probably one the worst times in my life because my dad left my mom. He left us with
nothing because my mom was the reason why they were no longer together. I couldn t see my dad
anymore or even talk to him. I was left feeling depressed and not wanted. At this point in my life I
hated and I did wish I wasn t alive at that time, It was such miserable time in my life were nothing got
better it just kept getting worse and worse. I cried myself to sleep every night because I thought
everyone hated me and that nobody wanted me. I was stuck babysitting all the time because my mom
was out trying to make money. All my grandma did was talk about how horrible my dad was and how
she wanted him to die. It just made me mad because it was my mom s fault every part of it was but I
couldn t say that because I loved my mom more than anything in this world. I also knew she would
flip out on me if i said it was her fault because she knew it was. The thing that made it ten times worse
was that she found someone new and he was the biggest piece of trash ever. My mom is my queen,
she is the best thing that has ever happened to me, and I couldn t imagine life without her . She just
tries so hard to make everyone else happy that sometimes it brings her spirit down. I know she didn t

Disney Negative Image
Some Disney Films Portray a Negative Image on Kids Lives in Today s World
I. Introduction
a. The image that Disney s films portray their stories is a very powerful product that can influence our
kids in a negative way.
b. One example of this is the film The Princess and the Frog. In this movie, we can see that an African
American girl named Tiana lived poor in the 1920 s. The plot of this story is that this poor girl wanted
to finish the dream of her father, which is to create a restaurant.
c. Like most of Disney s movies, the damsel in distress ends up marrying the prince charming,
resolving all her social and economic problems. This kind of message to a little girl can create a wrong
image of what her life should be like. Therefore, it portrays a negative influence in a young girl life.
d. THESIS STATEMENT: Disney films create a fantasy world that young audience capture as an
example of how life should be. This creates an issue, because it teaches kids that money is the solution
for all problems by selling your dignity, they also teach that hard work is not enough in order to
accomplish your dreams, and they also label the difference in social status.
II. BODY ONE
a. Disney films create a fantasy world, which misleads kids imagination of how the real world should
be lived.
b. In most of the Disney films, money is a factor to save the lives of the main characters. This was not
the exception in the film The Princess and the Frog.
1. As part of her solution, Tiana has to kiss the frog, which is a prince and in return he would give her
money to by the old mill. She ends up giving him the kiss for the money he promised.
2. Even though this scene seems harmless, this is an example of how Disney films are portraying a
negative influence on how a girl sells herself to get the money she needs.
3. The message here is that it is acceptable to sell your dignity for money in return for what you need.
4. For younger kids this can be an example of how to acquire things in life.
III. BODY TWO
a. In this film, they also teach that hard work is not enough in order to accomplish your dreams.
1. Throughout the film, Tiana is depicted to be a hard worker. She is also portrayed following the
values her parents taught her.
2.

those roles in the process of buying food for a school cafeteria.
Buying centers have numerous of roles of participation in the purchasing decision process. There are
users who are the people who actually use the goods and services. Their role in the consumer decision
making are very important. The user may help to facilitate the purchase actions by requesting specific
products and they made aid in the development of a specific product s specifications. A prime example

There would be no export expense of coffee beans and the general office of Starbucks in Mexico
could purchase direct from the growers in Mexico to cut cost. The presence of Starbucks would
promote domestic business and will also provide more jobs within that country. Because Starbucks
have most of its coffee beans exported from Latin American as a marketer I would look into building a
grow and processing plant for the production of coffee beans within the country of Mexico. It would
be great for Starbucks to expand more into the coffee market and promote as well as produce a better
product for the world s consumption.
Market growth is important for an expanding company like Starbucks. Farm land and a processing
plant with provide a great deal of economic stability for the country of Mexico and its people. New
jobs would be available and training of different jobs position would now be required. An expansion
of Starbucks would also develop a social cultural relationship with Starbucks and the newly employed
Mexican Starbucks employees. Not only would Starbucks improve the economic status of the people
who would be employed by the company. A plan should be implemented to offer better healthcare and
educational benefits to establish help to move forward for the struggles that directly affect the
Mexican communities while politicizing youth, in the hope that their commitment to fundamental
social change will

The Tensions between Line Mangers and Human Resources Practitioners in Modern Organisations
Human resources management is a business department and function that has the strategic approach to
the management of the company s employees. Armstrong (2006, p.3) defines HRM as a strategic and
coherent approach to the management of an organisation s most valuable assets the people working
there who individually and collectively contribute to the achievement of it objectives. The HR
business function provides an organisation with administrative support regarding the laws and

With recruitment HR play a very active part in recruiting a new employee for a position within the
company. It is the responsibility of HR to carry out the administration for this. HR will organise
adverting the position, they will, prepare the job description and specification and contracts for the
position, according to Personnel Today Website (2001) A total of 30 per cent of respondents said their
HR departments always controlled temporary staff recruitment, 36 per cent revealed HR was mostly
responsible and 20 per cent said that their HR departments were never responsible for recruitment of
temporary staff. It is believed that HR take control of the recruitment process to save on costs and
make the process more efficient. When applicants have applied for the position HR will then shortlist
for the interviews. Here is where conflict may occur as line manager may feel that they are having
limited control over how employees are being recruited and their requirements from the employee are
not being met, this can subsequently result in a high staff turn over than can be cost more financially
to the business in the long term. However if a line manger and HR are to work closely together during
the recruitment process conflict can be reduced and the needs of the manager can be met the Personnel
Today Website (2001) adds It is not a question of cutting out the middle man it is more a question of
how the HR and line managers

Essay on Navajo-Hopi Lande Dispute
Navajo Hopi Lande Dispute
When first considering the Navajo Hopi land dispute as a topic of research, I anticipated a relatively
light research paper discussing the local skirmishes between the two tribes. However, my research has
yielded innumerable volumes of facts, figures and varying viewpoints on a struggle that has
dominated the two tribes for over 100 years. The story is an ever changing one, evolving from local
conflict to forcible relocation to big business interests. The incredible breadth of the dispute s history
makes it impossible to objectively cover the entire progression from all viewpoints. I will therefore
focus on current issues and their historical causes facing the two tribes as they mutually approach ...

The land was officially partitioned in 1974 by mandate of P.L. 93 531 also known as the Navajo Hopi
Land Settlement Act of 1974 without the input or consent of those from both tribes actually occupying
the land in question. The partition equally divided the JUA into the Navajo Partitioned Lands (NPL)
and the Hopi Partitioned Lands (HPL). About 12,000 Navajo were stranded on newly declared Hopi
land and, likewise, about 300 Hopi families found themselves on Navajo land. Many hold the belief
that government sponsored and styled tribal council and influential energy interests contrived the JUA
dispute to promote congressional action. The US has subsequently spent over $400 million to relocate
the families to tract housing in nearby cities.
The disproportionate amount of Navajo forced to relocate heightened age old anxieties between the
Navajo and Hopi. The Navajo are still at the center of the relocation controversy as many traditional
Dineh families have chosen to remain within the HPL in defiance of 1974 s P.L. 93 531. The Navajo
traditionalists view their land as representing the essence of their being, says Jennie Joe of the Native
American Research and Training Center at the University of Arizona in Tucson, who conducted a

  • 2. Andy Warhol Pop Art Era Andy Warhol , was one of the most iconic painters to date. Known for his unconventional takes on images varying from Marilyn Monroe to soup cans, his love of bright colors and bold patterns brought these images to life and helped pave his way as a major figure in the pop art movement. His work really set the tone of the Pop Art Era. It pulled in a lot of pop culture and always made some kind of statement, whether noticeable or not contrary to the previous generation. For example, when Andy was discussing his Campbell s Soup Cans painting he said I used to drink it. I used to have the same lunch every day, for 20 years, I guess, the same thing over and over again. Which can really tell you how times were back then, he was a child of poverty just like many people in that time period. His parents were immigrants to the United States, Pavol and Julia Warhola by way of the Czech Republic, on August 6, 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was one of three sons, his brothers names , John and Pavol Warhola. Around the age of 8 Andy was un fortunately diagnosed with Chorea that left him to live in the bed. To soothe his boredom his mother gave him his first drawing lessons. So you could kind of say it was a bittersweet occurrence that he contracted the Chorea illness , because it sparked his real passion for art. However a few years later in ... The blotted line was a smudged mirror image of the original line he had drawn. He liked the look it gave and the idea that his hand had not actually drawn the line onto to the paper that actually contained the final ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Buddhist Art Of The Han Dynasty During the Han Dynasty, first Buddhist missionaries had come to China. It was only gradually felt in the beginning, as it was brought into a developing society. As Buddhist narratives, and traditions of iconography enriched China, it opened up new possibilities for the artistic culture of China. Eventually, Buddhist temples became the model for all Chinese temples, Taoist and Confucian. Scrolls of silk and paper replaced bamboo slips for writing. The scrolls were joined by hanging scrolls which became the most famous format for painting. With this new wave of painting styles, Buddhist paintings and figures also grew in great numbers. These changes became more prominent as time went on, and from the big changes they have brought, it can be said that Buddhism left a huge imprint on the Chinese Art. Founded in the sixth century BCE, Buddhism soon began expanding northwards from the foothills of the Himalayas. In the third century BCE, Buddhism was dispersed by missionaries across Central Asia from within India, where it remained dominant for about a thousand years. When it was brought into China, new Buddhist monks emerged. Some of them went onto become valued as palace advisors. This transmission of Buddhism also occurred with the help of the Silk Road. The Silk Road was an ancient trade route linking the West to China. Runs from the Mediterranean coast to Central Asia, south to India, or east through mountains and bleak deserts to, present day Xi an, in China. People ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Or they are similar enough to the brain s natural chemical messengers that they trick brain receptors into activating nerve cells. Stimulants such as cocaine and methamphetamines cause the neurons to release too much of the neurotransmitters, causing the sensation users describe as the brain racing. And, in one way or another, almost all drugs over stimulate the pleasure center of the brain, flooding it with the neurotransmitter dopamine. This produces euphoria, and the heightened pleasure can be so compelling that the brain wants that feeling back again and again. Unfortunately, with repeated use of a drug, the brain becomes accustomed to the dopamine surges by producing less of it. So the user has to take more of the drug to feel the same pleasure the phenomenon known as tolerance. There are several psychological factors that exist in the adolescent with substance and chemical dependency disorders. The moods of these adolescents are not stable and they are more prone to depression. They have various emotional and behavioral difficulties. Adolescents with these disorders also tend to have learning disabilities and psychiatric disturbances. As a leader for change, Browning should set the theme by communicating inspiring visions, which provide a picture of the future combining poetry and prose, imagination and pragmatism, drawing on destination, dream, prize, target, message, and first step. • 6. Wages of Crime by R. T Naylor Introduction: Wages of Crime: Black Markets, Illegal Finance, and the Underworld Economy is a book by R. T. Naylor based on his views of organized crime and the government s stance and involvement. Naylor writes from a mostly democratic point of view and presents his thesis quite clearly. Naylor s thesis in this book is that organized crime is a convenient myth handed to society by the government. In this book Naylor sets up four important concepts: first on the black market operations of guerrilla groups, second on the modern arms market, then on money laundering, and finally the underworld trade in gold. Throughout the book he talks about the critique of the public perceptions of organized crime, a discussion of anti money laundering policies, and an analysis of terrorist financing. Summery At the start of his second chapter Naylor sets up the difference between the motives of insurgent groups versus criminal groups. Naylor claims Criminals commit economic crimes to make money. (pg. 45) and that is where motivation ends for them. The difference between insurgent groups is, money is merely a tool one that is necessary but not sufficient to achieve. Like the formally constituted governments they challenge, insurgent groups have political programs...they have control over armed forces, and they directly compete with the state for territory, population, and resources. (pg. 45) A parallel economy is then created by the guerrilla groups to supply the population with what ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Aristotle s Philosophy On The View Of Friendship Aristotle was an ancient Greek philosopher. Aristotle s philosophy was his logical concept. Aristotle s objective was to come up with a universal process of reasoning that would allow man to learn every imaginable thing about reality. He wrote on a vast amount of subjects during his lifetime, such as biology, chemistry, physics, ethics and logic. Aristotle wrote a book called, Nicomachean Ethics. This book describes the view of friendship. He also describes three different type of friendship, which in reality is exactly how friendship is in today society. The question while reading this information is what is friendship in Aristotle point of view? Aristotle believes that there are three different kinds of friendship; that of utility, friendship of pleasure, and virtuous friendship. In his book he describe exactly what each type of friendship really is. Friendship that is of utility is where both people derive some benefit from each other. Is like saying that these people are friends from each other by gaining something else from the other. They are not friends for the good of it; they are friends because there are benefits coming from them. Aristotle describes a friendship of utility as narrow, easily dissolved or for the old. He views them as such because this type of friendship is easily broken and based on something that is brought to the relationship by the other person. Most of the people that have this type of friendship are the young people. They do not know ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Casablanca as Political Propaganda Essay Casablanca debuted in 1942, shortly following the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the United States entrance into World War Two, although there was plenty of anti Nazism sentiment, the movie fueled these feelings. There is pro Allied forces propaganda to support the war, from the scene with La Marseillaise, to the characters of Renault and Rick, and to the last scene. Although the majority of the French patriots were elated to sing their national anthem, it created tension with the German soldiers who imposed their patriotic songs on the crowd, representing the imposition of Germany on France during the war. Captain Louis Renault, who tries to placate who he believes will be the winning side, seems flimsy when compared to Rick, the firm ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The anthem stirs up the patriotism in the people as they slowly join the fight, all of which is happening under the roof of an American man?s cafà . Without the American cafà , the French patriots would not have been able to fight and embarrass the Germans with the song, so with American equipment, the French are able to fight back. Variety Magazine in 1942 describes the film as having, ?splendid anti Axis propaganda, particularly inasmuch as the propaganda is strictly a by product of the principal action and contributes to it instead of getting in the way? It is just another facet of the variety of moods, action, suspense, comedy and drama that makes ?Casablanca? a number one entry at the box office? (variety). This message is important for American viewers especially because it emphasizes the necessity of the Americans in the war efforts and their vital role. The characters in Casablanca all contribute to the political allegory, for example Rick is strong and isolated like America, Strasser is the typical Nazi general representing Germany, and Renault is compliant with the Germans like France. American Rick and European Louis look out for each other s interests throughout the film, just as America and Western Europe did once the United States entered the war. Renault had to obey and follow the Strasser?s demands until he had leverage and the knowledge that he could defeat or overcome ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The novel Brave New World , by Aldous Huxley, and the short story There Will Come Soft Rains , by Ray Bradbury, gives an excellent presentation of futuristic elements and how world climate at the time affected how the author perceived the future. Both of these stories paint a picture of a world where technology has advanced to the point that it has negatively affected mankind. Using new historicism, this paper will explore the different ideas and thoughts of the authors and how they got influenced by the historical events happening in their time as well as the developing technologies. This paper will also explore how the two stories, even though written on different decades, are very similar in nature through their views, themes, and the ultimate effect on society. Huxley writes the novel Brave New World in 1931 around the time technology rapidly replaced workers jobs and made unemployment rates increase. This caused many people to take any job they could get such as factory work. In the novel, Aldous Huxley describes a future world where every single person is working in a factory and doesn t have a say rather or not they want to work there. The novel shows Huxley sees the future as alienated and ruled by a God who controls every aspect of people s lives. Mirror neurons themselves are a pivotal factor in bridging perception and action as they help prep responses. As discovered by four Italian scientists in Parma, Italy, mirror neurons fire as a function of perception, but it may not lead to any discernable action. Put more straightforward, mirror neurons are a set of neurons that produce a mirror like firing sequence in response to a stimulus, but they do not necessarily cause any physical motor reaction. The scientists who first proposed this phenomenon showed that neurons present in the premotor cortex of macaque monkeys showed near parallel bursts of activity between a perception and actual execution of a particular task, in this case grasping an object. Mirror neurons are unique as they are universal in the brain. They mirror actions, emotions, and even potentially sentiments. Moreover, Iacaboni even went as far to suggest they serve as the basis for complex states such as morality. In this sense mirror neurons have the potential to be major factors within group dynamics as they can ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. The Tripartite Secondary School System Introduction To Social Policy (AC1, AC2, AC4.2) The tripartite secondary school system was introduced to society following the 1944 Education Act, this act divided schooling into primary and secondary levels whilst increasing the school leaving age to 15. During the same year, however, the secondary level of schooling was further divided into 3 categories grammar, technical and modern. Prior to this act there was no segregation of schooling in place, known as elementary schooling. Grammar schools were intended to schools based around academia, technical schools were intended to be based around science and technical schooling and modern schools were intended to be consistent with general schooling and education. The secondary schools children attended was not down to individual choice but rather an IQ test, the 11+ test. The 11+ test was founded by Cyril Burt on the understanding that intelligence was inherited, there was proof into Burt s theory and it was identified that girls IQ level was often higher. The test was fixed to minimise the girls scores and allow only 20% to meet the requirements for the grammar schools. However this act was not successful as modern and grammar schools were equal in society and science was taught in grammar schools as opposed to technical schools, thus very few technical schools were instituted. By 1952 predominantly people were in modern schools, followed by grammar and only 5% in technical schools so the system proposed had failed to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

You never really think how it gets there or why there isn t any left. When you go to the store to buy groceries and the price has went up you tend to get upset. Although, when they go down you think to yourself that you better stock up. All of these changes occur because of demand and supply. Demand and supply are the key components for the economy. Kirzner (2000) states in his article: The theory of supply and demand is recognized almost universally as the first step toward understanding how market prices are determined and the way in which these prices help shape production and consumption decisions the decisions that make up not shapes the prices for production and consumption of goods and services. Demand According to Moffatt Demand is the relationship between the quantity of a good or service consumers will purchase and the price charged for that good . It is the want or need for a good or service to be produced. The amount of a good at a certain price that an individual is willing to buy is called quantity demand. Prices fluctuate for many reasons. When a price of a good or service goes up or down it is called law of demand. If the price rises, the quantity demanded goes down. If the price goes down, the quantity demanded goes up. The Effects of Memory Improvement by Saying Words Aloud THE EFFECTS OF MEMORY IMPROVEMENT BY SAYING WORDS ALOUD Abstract This experiment proposes to study the effects of memory improvement by reciting and saying the words out loud to oneself. Participants will be assigned to either two different types of conditions and will then be required to recall the information of words as best as they can. It is assumed that a higher level of generating the targeted words into memory is improved when readers say the words out loud to themselves. Thus, the hypothesis concluded is that people who say words out loud after reading them are expected to improve their memory in retaining information. However, recent research done by Reynolds amp; Besner (2008) suggests that contrary to the view that by vocalizing words out loud is entirely an automatic memory encoding, it in fact requires some form of attention. Previous research was investigated further where participants were exposed to reading lexicon and pseudo homophones aloud that required the use of central attention. In research done by Blais amp; Besner (2007), repetition of words of lexical representations suggests longer persistence in the early memory processing, as cited by Reynolds amp; Malley (2008). It was discussed earlier that possibly the mere action of vocalizing words for memory recall will encourage memory improvement at a higher level, thus making a person to be able to better retrieve previous information if need be (Macleod et al., 2010). In another study, Kappel, Harfard, Burns amp; Anderson, (1973) gave another possible explanation on the advantage of reading words out loud, indicating that serial voiced recall were found to be superior for the later positions, and these results replicates previous experiments done by Murray (1966) and Conrad amp; Hull (1968). The image that Disney s films portray their stories is a very powerful product that can influence our kids in a negative way. b. One example of this is the film The Princess and the Frog. In this movie, we can see that an African American girl named Tiana lived poor in the 1920 s. The plot of this story is that this poor girl wanted to finish the dream of her father, which is to create a restaurant. c. Like most of Disney s movies, the damsel in distress ends up marrying the prince charming, resolving all her social and economic problems. This kind of message to a little girl can create a wrong image of what her life should be like. Therefore, it portrays a negative influence in a young girl life. d. THESIS STATEMENT: Disney films create a fantasy world that young audience capture as an example of how life should be. This creates an issue, because it teaches kids that money is the solution for all problems by selling your dignity, they also teach that hard work is not enough in order to accomplish your dreams, and they also label the difference in social status. II. BODY ONE a. Disney films create a fantasy world, which misleads kids imagination of how the real world should be lived. b. In most of the Disney films, money is a factor to save the lives of the main characters. This was not the exception in the film The Princess and the Frog. 1. As part of her solution, Tiana has to kiss the frog, which is a prince and in return he would give her money to by the old mill. She ends up giving him the kiss for the money he promised. 2. Even though this scene seems harmless, this is an example of how Disney films are portraying a negative influence on how a girl sells herself to get the money she needs. 3. The message here is that it is acceptable to sell your dignity for money in return for what you need. 4. For younger kids this can be an example of how to acquire things in life. III. BODY TWO a. In this film, they also teach that hard work is not enough in order to accomplish your dreams. 1. Throughout the film, Tiana is depicted to be a hard worker. Essay on Navajo-Hopi Lande Dispute Navajo Hopi Lande Dispute When first considering the Navajo Hopi land dispute as a topic of research, I anticipated a relatively light research paper discussing the local skirmishes between the two tribes.
