The 2002 Gujarat riots occurred over 3 days between Hindu and Muslim communities in Gujarat, India following the burning of a train in Godhra that killed 58 Hindu pilgrims. Over 1,000 people were killed, mostly Muslims, and thousands more were injured. There was widespread looting, destruction of property, and reports of gang rapes. The violence created massive economic and social impacts, including loss of life, livelihoods, homes, agricultural lands, businesses, and long-term religious and community tensions.
