1) Agriculture is the main source of livelihood for over 85% of Bihar's population, however agricultural productivity and incomes are very low in the state. 2) Samastipur district in Bihar has small and fragmented land holdings, flood prone areas, and limited irrigation, resulting in low and variable agricultural yields. 3) Major livelihood sources in Samastipur include rice and wheat farming, sugarcane, potatoes, dairy and livestock rearing, and some off-farm employment, however food insecurity and lack of employment remain key challenges.
